I always get this irrationally irate feeling whenever I see those girls on Tumblr posting pics of their Frida Kahlo tattoos. Correction: I get this irrationally irate feeling whenever I see white girls on Tumblr posting pics of their Frida tattoos. Because the thing is that while I as a white person love her art and enjoy studying it, I don’t have a right to any part of Frida. (Arguably nobody does, but that’s another discussion for another day.) The thing is that so much of Frida’s work was celebrating her particular Mexican identity; and isn’t that super important? Isn’t it remarkable that in our obsessed-with-white-people world one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century was not only female but Mexican?
So, like, could you not tattoo her face onto your lily-white ass?
