Plot: Jaime’s student Katie is friends with Susan Victor who owns an exotic animal reserve outside of Ojai. One tiny detail, Susan is a believer in letting her animals roam free, including her magnificent lion, Neil! When Susan is gone for the weekend, a rash of livestock get killed by a local critter, and they suspect Neil. Can Jaime save Neil and find the true culprit?
The Good: I know I loved Six Mill’s big cat installment, Taneha, so I was primed to love the hell out of this installment. This wasn’t nearly as great, but it is very cool seeing some big cats and other critters. I dug how Jaime had to kick butt and tackle a big cat or two to protect the animals. While some of the plot elements strained credibility, this I really enjoyed. Neil was really great too, what a great big fuzz ball!
The Bad: So the crux of this story is that a lion is totally chill as long as you don’t keep him in a cage. Fine. But the place this plot becomes pretty silly is how it wants to treat the locals who think Neil a murderer like they are insane lunatics. This seemed not only pretty sensible to me, but as an adult, I can see how this plot was sold straight to the kiddos. Also, as exciting as this plot seemed on paper, the execution was a bit slow, and it totally made Susan Victor seem like an eccentric weirdo for keeping all of the animals around. Doubly strange for leaving them for a audition. Wha!?
The Bionic: Jaime has to use her bionic strength many times to wrangle an elephant and to tangle with Neil when he is enraged later in the episode. She also uses her speed and coordination to dart the rouge cougar, and uses her bionic ear to track not only the critters, but the hunters as well. She also does a lot of bionic running to catch up with the cougar and lion on the prowl.
Rating: 3 friendly lions out of 5
