Updated status from JAIF (Report 29)

 Persons who were working to carry out test run of pumps, which are to inject water into the reactor at Unit-3, were evacuated after black smoke rose and the test run was suspended around 16:00. (19:05, March 23) 

 TEPCO Fukushima office announced at the press briefing held at 17:30 that black smoke rose from unit-3 around 16:20, and then it was gradually calmed down as of 17:10. Radiation detected surrounding the power plant has not changed. (18:05, March 23) 

 Tokyo Fire Department was going to spray water to unit-3 from 16:30. However, this operation was suspended concerning safety after black smoke rose. (17:50, March 23)

 The operation of water injection to the spent fuel pool of Unit-4 with special vehicle was finished around 13:00 after 3 hour operation. (14:15, March 23)

Status of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear  power station as of 16:00, March 22, 2011 

Here is information regarding the status of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station from the news reports aired by NHK in this afternoon of March 22. 

 Tokyo fire department started operation of spraying water to Unit-3 at 15:50 today through cooperation with Osaka fire department. This is 4th operation conducted by the fire department and it will continue for 1 hour. Tokyo fire department conducted this operation for unit-3 for 2 days by March 22nd, and the total time for sparing water is some 20 hours. (15:30, March 22) 

 TEPCO is working to recover external AC power at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station in which several units lost cooling function and in severe condition. This work is in further progress at unit-2 and unit-4, and TEPCO hope to provide power to systems and equipment at these 2 units by today. (15:10, March 22) 

 TEPCO Fukushima office announced that smoke from unit-2 decreased to the level of invisible around 07:00 March 22. The office also predicts that smoke from unit-3 is getting better based on the fact that color of the smoke changed from gray to white. (12:15, March 22) 

 Defense Minister Kitazawa announced  that operation of measuring surface temperature from the self-defense  force helicopter will be conducted everyday given the situation of smoke risen from unit-2 and unit-3.(12:10, March 22)

From earthquake report 21:

Here is information regarding the status of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station from the news reports aired  by NHK on the midnight and morning of March 22. 

  • TEPCO resumed the work to recover  external AC power to these units around 19:00, March 21. TEPCO is trying to recover external AC power at unit-2 and unit-3 by March 23rd TEPCO stopped the work after Gray smoke from unit-3 and steam like white smoke from unit-2 was discovered on the evening of March 21st. (11:23, March 22) 
  • Radiation surrounding Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station increased after white steam rose from the unit-2. Radiation decreased afterward. People who worked at unit-1, 2, 3 and 4 evacuated indoor after white smoke rose from unit-2 around 18:20 of March 21st (08:45, March 22).
  • It is founded that the Tsunami hit Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station and Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station was 14-meter-high, which is more than 2 times of tsunami height assumed. (06:25, March 22) 
  •  TEPCO conducted investigation and radioactive nuclides such as iodine and cesium were detected from seawater around Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station. (03:45, March 22)
