Anthony Mackie reunites with 'Hurt Locker' director Kathryn Bigelow for Detroit riots film

More than eight years since appearing on screen in Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker, Anthony Mackie is reuniting with the Oscar-winning filmmaker for her movie about the infamous Detroit riots.

The still untitled film is described as a crime drama set against the backdrop of the five-day riots in 1967. The story will address systematic racism in urban Detroit.” According to Deadline, Mackie will play a “returning Vietnam vet who figures prominently in the flashpoint drama.”

The actor, who also portrays Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, joins a cast that includes John Boyega (Star Wars: Episode VIII), Will Poulter (We’re the Millers), Ben O’Toole (The Water Diviner), and Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age of Extinction). Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty screenwriter Mark Boal penned the screenplay.

The film is targeting a 2017 release date to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the riots.
