jack bolton

This particular scene is one that I suspect a lot of the people jumping on the “Troy Bolton is a douchebag” bandwagon either never watched, or somehow blocked out.

Allow me to refresh your memory:

Jack Bolton: “There’s nothing wrong with keeping your eye on the prize. In fact, if you don’t, you get left behind.”

Troy: “Yeah, I know. I-I’m just saying, I didn’t get my friends jobs at the club so they could… sit and watch me eat in the dining room.”

PANTHERS MAKE WISH COME TRUE FOR 8-YEAR-OLD HONORARY COACH - Smiles have been limited in eight-year-old Jack Bolton’s life. He suffers from spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), and is unable to walk or crawl and relies solely on a motorized wheelchair for transportation. But last Saturday, Jack was nothing but smiles as he was hired as an associate coach for the Carolina Panthers.

Jack, a lifelong fan of the Panthers, received the opportunity through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He wrote a pregame speech, signed an official contact, tracked stats and met all of his favorite players.

According to the Panthers’ official website, he was too nervous to read the speech so Coach Ron Rivera stepped in and read it for him.

“For the rest of the (season) I’ll either be in the stands or watching you on TV. But just because I’m not watching from the field doesn’t mean you can goof off,” Jack wrote. “Even if you [lose] a few times your fans will still be happy because everybody knows the Panthers are AWESOME.”

After taking the field through the players’ tunnel with Rivera at his side, Coach Bolton literally kept up with what his favorite team was doing, keeping stats on the sideline while keeping his whistle and challenge flag at the ready. In between his coaching duties, he collected autographs, memorabilia and most memorably hugs, handshakes and high-fives.

By the end of practice, Bolton had become so popular that his favorite player, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, knelt down and asked Bolton for his autograph.

“It’s a pretty special day,” Jack’s father, John said. “The dimensions of this wish just go on and on. Just to be in the stadium was super-special, but this is unbelievable. I don’t know how they pulled it together.”

By the way. Jacks’ pay for the day? Unlimited hot dogs and drinks. (Photo: panthers.com)
