TEN DANCEHALL AND SOCA ARTISTS YOU DIDN’T KNOW YOU NEEDED, PART ONE

Bad gal Rihanna’s new video for Work was everything that we needed, especially part one, which took us back to the dancehall videos of the early 2000s (which were mostly directed by Toronto based filmmaker, Director X, who directed part one).  In light of Rihanna’s celebration of Caribbean culture, we want to introduce–and remind you of some classic and current dancehall and soca artists you can add to your playlists.

1. SPICE

Spice is probably one of our first introductions to feminism, when we think about it.  When we first saw her video for Fight Ova Man almost a decade ago we would have never imagined for her to reach such international success.  Being, “born inna Chanel and christen inna Gucci,” you may recognize her voice from her crossover hit with Vybz Kartel, Romping Shop which used Ne-Yo’s Miss Independent instrumental.  Never one to shy from telling a woman when and where she’ll take their man, Spice’s use of  unorthodox dancehall riddims keep her fresh and a favorite of ours.

2. DESTRA GARCIA

The self professed Queen of Bacchanal, like clockwork Destra comes out with new, infectious soca every Carnival season.  If you’ve ever been to Trinidad for Carnival, or New York for the West Indian Day Parade, Toronto for Caribana, you get the rest, you’ve no doubt heard her song, It’s Carnival. Initially getting her start with Roy Cape All Stars (ask your aunties who they are if you all are Caribbean), Destra’s music has always been about enjoying the vibe, owning your sexuality, and never allowing a man to dim your shine.

3. NADIA BATSON

As the band leader of Trinidadian collective SASS! and a powerhouse vocalist, Nadia Batson was a songwriter and background singer before making her debut with 2007′s Caribbean Girl.  SASS is Trinidad and Tobago’s only established all female soca band, which can be a nod to Beyoncé’s live band, The Sugar Mamas.  Nadia’s Instagram profile also notes her weight loss journey, just in case you needed motivation to get your body right (by your own standards!).

4. J CAPRI

A young woman gone entirely too soon, J Capri’s time spent in dancehall provided us with catchy hooks and visuals like this for Reverse It.  We only wish she were still here to give us more music, but we’ll bounce and jiggle to what she’s left us with.  Rest well, angel.

5. TIFA

Citing Patti Labelle and Aretha Franklin as early influences, Tifa has made waves in the global dancehall community as being the first female dancehall artist to perform in the Czech Republic (!!!).  Having also worked with other artists like Timberlee and Natalie Storm, Tifa’s work ethic is just as strong as her punchy lyrics.

Strong men, men who are truly role models, don’t need to put down women to make themselves feel powerful.

This case was a tough one. The unsub had been framing a bartender who was also your main suspect, supposedly abducted three women and making deep incisions in their torso, back and arms making them bleed to death. The bartender had come into the station and has given valuable information twice, injecting himself into the investigation. That made you question his “generosity.” You were in the conference room with Garcia, J.J, and Reid looking over the geographical profile when Hotch and Rossi barged into the room.

“Our suspect was just spotted at a diner on Highway 74. (Y/L/N), J.J. and Dave you’re with me, Reid and Garcia, continue with the profile. J.J. call Morgan and Blake and tell them to meet us there.”

J.J. nodded her head as you and your team member strut out of the station with the sheriff right by your side.

By the time you all arrived at the scene, there was another cop car already there. They filled you in and that the suspect was inside and he’s been there for about five minutes. Shortly after, a cop exclaimed that they detected movement and that we should move in. You decided against it, and that it would better to wait and see if he’s alone and search the perimeter. The echo of a gun shot made you all immediately turned around and took cover. One of the cops shouted that shots were fired and a wave of bullets flying everywhere and injuring people as well. A shot was fired at the sheriff and they tumbled down to the ground. Hotch almost instantly stumbled to run to the sheriff. He put pressure on the wound but they were right in front of the shooters trajectory.

You were about to shout at them to get back but then you glanced at the shooter and saw the gun was pointed right at them, specifically Hotch. You quickly made a decision and it wasn’t a good one either. Everything happened so fast, it almost felt like it was in slow motion. You launched yourself at Hotch, blocking the shooters aim.

“Aaron!”

You felt a very sharp sting in your neck as you fell to the ground. You slowly brought your hand up to touch the wound and you saw blood. You were losing a lot of it in a short amount of time. Your vision blurred and you didn’t realize that Hotch called your name and J.J. help him move you, but unfortunately she got shot in the chest. Luckily it didn’t pass through her vest. At this point, what’s left of the cops, and J.J. and Morgan went to move in the diner. In the mean time, you weren’t doing so good. Hotch put pressure on the wound as he yelled for someone to call an ambulance. You tried to keep your eyes open and you blinked several times but eventually failed. You were getting weaker and weaker by the minute and he noticed. Hotch gently pat your cheek while tears threatened to fall down his cheeks.

“Hey, hey Y/N, I need you to stay with me okay?”

The ambulance arrived about two minutes later and the paramedics had managed to get you stable on the way to the hospital but you were barley breathing. You weakly reached out beside you to Aaron’s hand.

“I love you, Aaron.”

Your grip on his hand faded and the monitor was beeping rapidly. The paramedics immediately started working on you while Hotch sat back near your feet. He finally let the tears escape while he ran his hands through his hair.

When they arrived at the hospital, the paramedics explained your condition to the doctor. They immediately took you back to do surgery. Hotch followed and looked through the window on the door to the ER. Seeing you in pain, makes his heart break. He walked back near the waiting room and the team walked in except J.J. because she was getting checked out in another room. Garcia spoke first, almost unable to speak, because of her lip trembling.

“Is it bad?”

Hotch’s body language answered her question. It took him a minute to regain his composure before speaking, but eventually started to cry again. He put his head in his hands after he sat down. The team hated to see him like this again. The team consoled him before leaving to go see J.J. He couldn’t go through this again. He couldn’t lose you like he did Haley. He feels responsible for putting you in this position. His head was bombarded with questions. What if you don’t make it? What if those were the last words you said to him? He started pacing back and forth in circles while stroking his chin. What was he going to do if you died? How was he going to tell Jack? Hotch was lost in thought, thinking about the worse possible outcome when he didn’t realize the doctor was standing next to him.

“How is she?”

“She’s very lucky. She lost a lot of blood, internal and external but we managed to stop the bleeding. If the bullet was a little closer to the left, it would’ve severed the carotid arterie. You may see her now but she’s very weak.”

Hotch mumbled a thanks to the doctor and rushed to your room. When he saw you, he sighed with sadness. Hotch softly closed the door behind him and made his way over to you. As the sound of footsteps approach you, you exposed your eyes to your surroundings as you see a figure reaching down to hug you. You then realized that it was Aaron and you held him tightly. Before you could say anything he whispered in your ear while quietly sobbing.

“I love you to.”

A day in infamy

December 7, 1941, started as a typical Sunday morning at Pearl Harbor, the US Navy’s Pacific Fleet Headquarters on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. That is, until shortly before 8:00 am, when Japan launched roughly 200 planes from six aircraft carriers in its first wave of Operation Hawaii—forever to be known by Americans as “the attack on Pearl Harbor” or just “Pearl Harbor.”

Today we remember the lives of approximately 2,400 Americans that were lost and more than 1,100 wounded. Marines, sailors, soldiers, airmen who paid the ultimate sacrifice. We remember the day that rallied our nation to enter World War II.
