Loving Kindness Meditation

Loving kindness meditation is an ancient form of meditation. It involves six stages. We develop a sense of loving kindness for:

• oneself
• a good friend
• a “neutral” person
• a difficult person
• all four of the above equally
• the entire universe

Loving kindness meditation or “compassion meditation” is not just a touchy feeling new age thing. It is a technique which has been of great interest to modern medicine. A study by Professor Richard J. Davidson, distinguished professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin and Founder and Chair of the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds at the prestigious Waisman Center, found that those who engaged in compassion meditation over time began to generate gamma waves, brain waves which are associated with ” sense of consciousness, bliss, and intellectual acuity subsequent to meditation.” The study further noted that “loving kindness meditation is known to have a number of health benefits: stress reduction, mood elevation, and increased life expectancy of the mind and its cognitive functions.”

This is the loving kindness metta and a good place to start. In your twice daily meditation memorize and repeat this at the beginning and conclusion of your session. Don’t simply do it by rote, feel it, deep in your solar plexus. Feel love for yourself, other people and all things.

May I be filled with loving kindness,
May I be well,
May I be peaceful and at ease,
May I be happy and free from suffering.

May you be filled with loving kindness,
May you be well,
May you be peaceful and at ease,
May you be happy and free from suffering.

May all beings be filled with loving kindness,
May all beings be well,
May all beings be peaceful and at ease,
May all beings be happy and free from suffering.

If You Never Frown, You Won't Feel Sad

Botox is a popular cosmetic procedure to reduce facial wrinkles.   Botox is injected into various muscles, for instance in the face, and it  paralyzes the muscles thereby causing the wrinkles to “relax”. It’s   been known for a while that one of the side effects of Botox treatments are that people can’t fully express emotions (for example, they can’t   move the muscles that would show they were angry, or even happy). New   research shows another interesting side effect – people who have Botox   injections can’t feel emotions either.

Muscles and feeling are tied together – If you can’t  move your muscles to make a facial expression you can’t feel the   emotion that goes with the expression. So if you have recently received a  Botox injection and you go to a movie that is sad, you will not feel   sad because you won’t be able to move the muscles in your face that go   with feeling sad. Moving muscles and feeling emotions are linked.
