so I said something about mezato and takenaka having the eccentric shounen detective vibe and guess what

yep its an AU

in which mezato is an independent reporter who’s famous for not knowing what fear or common sense is when it comes to investigation, and takenaka is a telepath trying to stay alive

This book will perhaps only be understood by those who have themselves already thought the thoughts which are expressed in it—or similar thoughts. It is therefore not a text-book. Its object would be attained if there were one person who read it with understanding and to whom it afforded pleasure.

The book deals with the problems of philosophy and shows, as I believe, that the method of formulating these problems rests on the misunderstanding of the logic of our language. Its whole meaning could be summed up somewhat as follows: What can be said at all can be said clearly; and whereof one cannot speak thereof one must be silent.

The book will, therefore, draw a limit to thinking, or rather—not to thinking, but to the expression of thoughts; for, in order to draw a limit to thinking we should have to be able to think both sides of this limit (we should therefore have to be able to think what cannot be thought).

The limit can, therefore, only be drawn in language and what lies on the other side of the limit will be simply nonsense.

(possible spoilers for chapter 867 I guess??) am I understanding correctly that she ate them???? what??? no but like?? that's what I'm getting from it and I'm just hoping I'm wrong, do you think she could have...?? because that is fucking brutal, quite possibly the most metal thing I've ever seen, but also ??? Idek, I'm sory if I'm not making any sense, I'm just really shocked and english is not my first language, sorry...

When I first read chapter 867, I didn’t notice that Big Mom (probably) ate Mother Caramel and the other children - I only found out after reading other people’s posts and like you I kinda freaked out o.O Although I wasn’t certain that she really devoured them, after reading this week’s chapter I think it’s safe to say that she really did, at least Mother Caramel. Oda sure is taking the Yonkou’s brutality to another level, isn’t he? BM’s past reminded me of Attack on Titan, and I won’t be surprised if I’m not the only one.

Sad thing is I also feel kind of sorry for her - she probably doesn’t know that she swallowed whole the most important person of her life (I also read a theory saying she probably knows but is denying reality), not to mention that her dream is… well, kind of sweet. I have this feeling that Oda is eventually going to make BM side with Luffy, but since her deeds until now are beyond redeemable I can’t be sure.

Also, I’ve seen fans complaining that BM’s a ruined villain since she also turned out to have a (kind of) sad backstory, but I must say that I’m more interested about her character after the flashback. I haven’t seen a character as idealistic as her in OP, but she has also shown incomparable, almost absurd brutality so it’d be interesting to see how those two contradictory traits mesh with one another.

hey gemma, I just read your fic "them" (which is amazing btw) and I was wondering if when you described Silver making "a quick gesture with his right hand, touching his forehead and pulling down, then sticking out his little finger and thumb." it actually means anything in sign language?

hey! thank you! i’m glad you liked it!

and yes it does mean something in sign language. it simply means “Why?” i’m not sure when that became a common sign (and by that i mean, i couldn’t find a date when i half-assed my research) so i decided the early 18th century was the perfect time for that come into common usage. Here is a very perplexed man making that gesture, if you want to see what it looks like.

the only other sign i am explicit about but don’t translate is at the end, when silver runs his finger across his bottom lip. it’s kind of an easter egg, i guess, because it’s not from either ao3 post but rather this random tumblr post, but that’s how silver says, “Flint.”

“Je suis désolé mon ami, but i can’t let you continue any further”

i have a weakness for vaguely threatening short people

Academia.edu is a wonderful resource and lots of fun until you come across an article titled “5 Beautiful Haiku in Minoan Linear A”.

Um, what?

  1. The concept of a haiku is only a few hundred years old. Minoan Crete is over 3000 years older.
  2. Haiku are Japanese. From Japan. You know, that country one entire continent away from Crete.
  3. Nobody knows what language or even what language group “Minoan” is.
  4. Linear A hasn’t been deciphered yet.

I think I’m just going to go to bed.

i really never thought that I’d have a chance to speak German in Crete .. but it turns out that my longest conversation in German so far was there ! - a lady who organised some sort of club was going round talking to people, and came round to my dad and I at the hotel . my dad asked where she was from; Germany, very near to Switzerland. so of course my dad goes on “Frances is learning German” etc and from then on she only spoke auf deutsch to me :) and this was the first time ever that I actually felt relatively comfortable speaking in a foreign language. I don’t know what it was, but the words just came more naturally to me… after she’d gone I couldn’t quite believe it had happened …

I can't help but to laugh when I start to get random anon hate mail on non-English tumblr from English tumblr like "homo, lesbo are homosexual slurs you homophobe, it's gay and lesbian!" when a) the whole post is in a language I doubt they have ever heard of let alone understand, b) those words are the polite words for us and our slurs mean nothing to them and c) do they really expect us to start using English words... Language policers have finally lost the shreds of reason they ever had.

That’s like the absolute end of the line for me. That one post where they started attacking the community acronym from another country, even after they figured out that’s what it was……it was the saddest and also funniest thing I’d ever seen. It was like that feeling of knowing someone had just crossed a line of patheticness there is no return from

a cool thing about nursing and i guess medicine as a whole is that its really a language and philosophy of its own, it has its own language, it still uses old latin terms like ‘mane’ ‘nocte’, there are so many codes and it’s a lot of ‘wtf’ until you learn how to read something like BD DX CHANGE ANALGESIA PRN IVT KVO (twice daily dressing change give pain relief if required and keep the line open) hahah or like HX OF ETOH ABUSE COPD HTN QID BSL lol history of alcohol abuse, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease hypertension with blood sugar levels taken 4 times daily medical shorthand another fun language to learn

sometimes i think about the fact that if i werent somehow naturally motivated to teach myself shit from a very young age id just be out here being a total fucking dumbass not knowin a damn thing
i mean thats kind of what i am anyway but i wouldnt know any big words you feel me

It's so weird to see people just wanna do kpop. Like it's korean-pop. That doesn't just mean the language but the whole kpop culture. Like how you supposed to be a kpop star in America? If you wanna do it so bad go to Korea and audition for a company or try to build yourself up there like every non-korean kpop star. Like I read that coco avenue moved to LA to expand in the kpop industry... um what?

I just don’t understand why non-Korean people are so obsessed with Korean pop. I mean, not just listening and enjoying what they are giving but actually trying to be invovled with it. There’s nothing in Kpop that you cant do in any other pop industry. If you like music so much and whatnot then just do it where you are? Pop music is everywhere. I could understand it if you’re Asian but like non-Asian people is just like? Korea and Japan in particular created an industry just for themselves and made it into this huge thing but now everybody else wants a slice of that when there’s really nothing stopping them from just doing it in their country’s already established industry. That’s like me going all the way to SK for McDonald’s when I have one literally a 5 minute drive away.

so apparently the non-english lyrics in Moana’s “We Know the Way” are written in “Tokelauan” which is the native language of one of the song writer/singers Opetaia Foa’i, whose from New Zealand, and apparently its a language only spoken by roughly 3000 IN THE WHOLE WORLD. thats crazy and amazing and once again im just blown away by how much representation and incusion of these cultures are in Moana.
