Tifa’s “peevish feelings”

So…uh…well I’ll give my personal view of this. At one time or another any cloti fan gets slapped by antis bringing up Tifa’s reaction in the jail cell and that “LOL TIFA IS JEALOUS!!!”

But looking at the context of this I am not surprised that Tifa ends up being annoyed and letting her peevish feelings slip.

Well, Tifa happens to overhear Aerith telling Cloud “The deal was for one date, right?”

Previous, Aerith had said this to Tifa about Cloud:

Aerith: Don’t worry. We just met. It’s nothing.

Aerith had already planned on dating Cloud before this meeting, and she tells Tifa that she and Cloud just met and that it’s nothing and for Tifa not to worry, only for Tifa to accidentally overhear Aerith talking about some deal for a date.

I don’t blame Tifa for being peeved in this scene. Tifa wishes she could be forward about her feelings like Aerith is, so not only does Tifa struggle with voicing her own feelings for Cloud, but now she is watching another woman talk about dates and Tifa still can’t be honest about her feelings to Cloud.

It’s annoying because Tifa not only has to deal with her inability to just speak her feelings on a regular basis, but now there’s a woman aggressively pursuing Cloud in a romantic way. This all ties back to Tifa just holding her tongue as she deals with her own irritation at not being able to voice her feelings for Cloud in the way Aerith can.

This is where Tifa “inadvertently” meaning….”accidentally” let’s her annoyance slip.

She is again thrown into an awkward situation when Aerith pushes Cait Sith to tell her what her and Cloud’s compatibility are.

So I don’t see it as Tifa being jealous of Cloud and Aerith’s relationship, she is annoyed because she’s loved Cloud for years and is unable to voice her feelings to him, where Aerith has known Cloud for a span of a few hours and is already talking about dates (the jail cell scene she has known him for maybe a day at most)

Meanwhile, Tifa has known Cloud since childhood and has held favor for him for years and even after being reunited with him, still can’t say it.

Even during Tifa’s date she attempts to tell him how she feels but can’t do it, she also mentions that:

Tifa: Aerith would be able to just come out and say it, probably.

I don’t find this to be evident of any jealousy of Cloud and Aerith’s bond, but rather an irritation that after so many years she cannot voice her feelings even when another woman is pursuing Cloud.

In Itadaki Street Special Tifa shows another instance of wishing she could be straight forward, in which Aerith calls Cloud amazing and Tifa thinks to herself that she wishes she could be honest like Aerith.

That’s just my view on the whole “Tifa jealousy” and “peevish feelings” thing. Thought I’d share.

EDIT: This is also with Tifa completely unaware that Cloud returns her feelings and has the same problem of letting his feelings be known.

Tifa is in a position where she is watching a woman make moves on the man she has loved for years and may be thinking she missed her chance because of her own shyness. It should also be taken into account that if Cloud had liked Aerith back in a romantic way Tifa would not compromise Cloud’s happiness, as shown by her willingness to stay by his side when he was comatose and work herself to exhaustion without hope or want for a reward.

Tifa has an inability to voice her feelings even when another woman is pursuing the man she loves and thinking she missed her opportunity, Tifa would also not get in the way of Cloud’s happiness if he were to fall for Aerith, so yes Tifa is annoyed but it is far more complex than “LOL JEALOUS”

Cloud loves Tifa

It is canon Cloud has romantic feelings towards Tifa, while it is unknown if he has any romantic feelings for Aerith. There is only fan speculation on the romance between Cloud and Aerith, while fact of Cloud’s romantic interest in Tifa that had GROWN to beyond her being his childhood friend.

First of all, it is confirmed that Cloud and Tifa have held romantic feelings for each other for YEARS.

These feelings of love first surfaced when Cloud was 14 years old.

Before leaving the village, he boldly called to Tifa, a girl he liked romantically, and declared he would become a SOLDIER. - 10th AU, pg 12.

Confirmed. Cloud’s feelings for Tifa were romantic at the moment he called her to the water tower.

Even though Cloud was holding feelings for Tifa from some time ago, Tifa’s interest in Cloud did not start until the time when the promised was exchanged. It might have been her loneliness due to her surrounding friends leaving one after another, but more than that, it seems largely in part to him making the promise to become her hero.

By the way, Tifa did not realize that Cloud was holding feelings for her until he informed her in the Lifestream. Even though she was called and it was just the two of them, she can be quite clueless. (Ultimania Omega pg 25.

Confirmed. Tifa was completely unaware of Cloud’s romantic feelings for her.

These events are non-optional. He had romantic feelings for her when he called her to the water tower, he informed Tifa of these romantic feelings in the lifestream. This is unaffected by date mechanics and happens regardless of Tifa’s affection level.

Nowhere does it say these feelings for Tifa are past, infact, they are current since they move in together BECAUSE of these feelings.

She ventured into Lifestream together with Cloud. Amidst the course of him trying to ascertain his memories, they became aware of the thoughts/feelings which each other was holding.- Tifa Lockhart profile 10th AU.

Confirmed. Cloud and Tifa realized they held romantic feelings for each other in the lifestream.

In FF7, Tifa is the only one who knows Cloud’s childhood, and furthermore, she holds the key to people involved in the story of Nibelheim’s burning down, which is also depicted in CC. She and Cloud came to realize their feelings for each other in the end of the story, and live together in AC and DC.- Tifa profile Crisis Core Ultimania.

Here again, they realize their feelings by the end of the story and live together. These feelings are confirmed to be romantic, and were exchanged in the lifestream regardless of affection rating. This is canon. Non-optional.

And just to add canon to our canon, it is confirmed that Cloud and Tifa held romantic feelings for each other for years before the Highwind scene. These years are unaffected by the date mechanics. The lifestream scene are unaffected by the date mechanics. But the HA HW scene is optional, but what is not optional is that Cloud and Tifa become aware of each other’s feelings (in the lifestream) and move in together because of these feelings. The LA HW (low affection high wind scene) taking place does not change that Cloud and Tifa have romantic feelings for each other and move in together.

The night under the highwind scene is also called FATEFUL.

For many years, Cloud and Tifa have been holding favor for one another. At last facing the impending final battle with Sephiroth, they confirm together their feelings of desire towards one another. -25th anniversary Tifa’s memorial words

The HA HW scene is confirmed to be romantic. They confirm their feelings of desire, these romantic feelings, together.

The Japanese text used, the word for favor is “koui” which means romantic favor and is the same word used to describe the bond between Squall and Rinoa, Cecil and Rosa, and Locke and Celes.

Here is the Japanese text.

長年、互いに好意を抱いていたティファとクラウド。セフィロスとの最終決戦を目前にようやく、相手を求める気持ちを確かめ合えた

The Fateful Night the Two Share An event near the time of the final battle with Sephiroth, where Cloud and Tifa stay at the airship Highwind together. With this possibly being the end – an evening overcome with a flood of feelings becomes something special.

This night confirmed to be emotional and romantic. And is fateful that the two share.

Back to the Lifestream scene. Cloud says this quote which many were confused on if it was about his crush on Tifa.

Cloud: ….a sealed up secret…… wish…… Tender memories…… no one can ever know… -Cloud in the lifestream.

The True Wish Revealed

“As a young child, Cloud was rebellious and isolated from those around his age, so he would try to convince himself that he was special. As such, Tifa was important to him. A slight young love/childhood awakening of love* is revealed in the mental world - Cloud’s memorial words 25th AU.

It is romantic, as proven that Cloud informs Tifa of his romantic feelings for her in the lifestream.

Tifa: Talk to me. About anything, some important memory to you… Now that you mention it, why did you want to join SOLDIER in the first place? I always thought it was a sudden decision you made……

Cloud: ……I was devastated. ……I wanted to be noticed. I thought if I got stronger I could get someone to notice……

Tifa: Someone to notice you…? ……who?

Who……? ……You know who! ……You, that’s who.

Cloud: You…..

Tifa: ……Me? Why!?

At this point, it can’t really be argued that Cloud’s feelings for Tifa are ambiguous. They are confirmed romantic in the lifestream scene.

The HA HW scene was also featured on the For The One I Love page.

VII – The night before the final battle Thanks to Tifa, Cloud regains himself, and before the final battle with Sephiroth, without using words, he confirms with her that their feelings match. - For the One I love pg 20th AU.

It is argued that this is optional and therefore non-canon, since if you turn to page 232 it states there are two versions of the scene.

The date with Aerith is also featured on the For The One I Love page. However, unlike Tifa’s scene, Aerith’s date is stated on the same page to be optional.

VII – Secret date At the Gold Saucer, Cloud receives an invitation from one of his companions. Who comes around with the invitation is dependent on Cloud’s behavior.

Also when turning to the page listed it reveal that there are FOUR different versions of the date.

So why would the date be completely canon just because Aerith’s date picture was shown, but the HA HW scene be uncanon because it is optional? Even though BOTH scenes are optional, but only one is listed as optional and is, infact, the only one on the page listed as optional.

Another argument that Cloud loves Aerith is the description of the For the One I Love page.

FOR THE ONE I LOVE Through the long journeys, the love of the protagonists develop. Occasionally they become separated, but the two’s value to one another gives them the great strength to overcome whatever crisis may come.

But, Cloud and Tifa’s scene is also listed on the FTOIL page (without the optionality) so would that not confirm that Cloud and Tifa have love for each other and their value for one another grows? Meaning that Cloud’s love for her does not diminish but in fact develops into something greater?

But let’s also factor in everything we read so far. Cloud has had romantic feelings for Tifa for YEARS. Cloud and Tifa also realize these feelings and move in together.

Cloud and Tifa described by the Crisis Core Keyword Collection says…

Cloud and Tifa

Cloud and Tifa are childhood friends, both born in Nibelheim. When Cloud leaves the village, he calls Tifa out to the water tower and promises that he will become a SOLDIER. At the same time, he is also made by Tifa to promise that he will come to rescue her if she is ever in trouble.

Following this, the pair experience many hardships, such as the Nibelheim incident which also appears in CC, and the Jenova War in FFVII, and through these the distance between them shortens. And in AC they live together, with Barret’s daughter Marlene and a boy named Denzel. Though there was also a period later where Cloud lived away from them after having contracted Geostigma, they finally reach a commune with each over and return to living together once again. In DC, they rush together to Vincent’s aid, in his battle against Deep Ground SOLDIER.

Cloud and Tifa’s love develop, they occassionally become separated, but the two’s value in each other allow them to overcome the crisis.

They become closer despite these hardships, they live together with two children, and when Cloud lives away from her for a time he does move back in again. Once more, their value in each other allows them to overcome whatever hardship they face.

While I’m at it, In a game called Itadaki Street Special, it was thought to be “C/A”  because of Cloud and Aerith appearing in the opening. However, scripts reveal that Aerith takes notice of Cloud’s feelings for Tifa.

Cloud: Tifa is wonderful. I, too, want to become strong.

Aerith: Cloud has been yearning/longing for Tifa…

or

Cloud: Tifa is amazing… I wanna be stronger… as well

Aerith: You look up to Tifa a lot, don’t you Cloud

Aerith: Tifa will make a good wife~

Cloud: I wonder who… Tifa likes?

After the Lifestream scene, which has been proven to show Cloud’s romantic feelings for Tifa, after Aerith bares witness to the scene….

She desperately tried to talk to Tifa who was about to get intoxicated by the highly concentrated Mako. Guiding her conscious, Aerith took her into Cloud’s closed heart.

In truth, Aerith really wanted to do it herself. But she couldn’t carry out the task. That’s why she entrusted Tifa with it. She entrusted Tifa with all the feelings she had for Cloud in her heart. She entrusted them to the one that was going to “live” together with Cloud…

You did it, Tifa. Thank you… I’m a little jealous of you but, do take care of Cloud and the upper world.”

Tifa embraced Cloud tightly as he returned to his senses. Aerith watched as both of them returned to the surface while smiling like an affectionate mother.

Aerith is shown to be aware of Cloud’s feelings for Tifa.

Now moving on. It is argued that “Cloud wants to be reunited with Aerith in The Promised Land”

But, after he says he thinks he can meet Aerith in the promise land, Cloud has this dialogue exchange with Tifa.

As Tifa looked away from the sky towards the ground, she was fearful of the future. However, Cloud beside her chose to smile gently. It was a smile that she hadn’t seen before during their journey. Cloud noticed her gaze and asked, “What’s wrong?”

“Cloud, you’re smiling.”

“I am?”

“Yeah.”

“It all starts now. A new…”

Cloud looked for the right words.

“A new life.”

“I’m going to live. I think that’s the only way I can be forgiven. All sorts of things… happened.”

“That’s right…”

“But when I think about how many times I’ve thought about how I was going to start a new life, it’s funny.”

“Why?”

“Because I’ve always failed everything.”

“That’s not funny.”

“After this … I think I’ll be okay.”

Cloud was silent for a long time before he spoke again.

Because I have you this time.”

“You’ve always had me.”

What I mean is kind of different,” Cloud answered with another smile. -Case of Tifa; revised; released with ACC.

I believe it has firmly been established that Cloud has a thing for Tifa, but just for good measure, here’s another dialogue exchange the two have.

When Tifa and Cloud were alone, Cloud said, “It’s not like you to be troubled by your thoughts.”

“It’s… Just the way I am.”

“No. You’re much more cheerful and strong. If you’ve forgotten the way you were then, I’ll be there to remind you.”

“You really will?”

“Probably,” Cloud said blushing.

And we already know Cloud has romantic feeling to Tifa.

“BUT CLOUD WAS BROODING AND UNHAPPY AND EVEN MARLENE SAID THEY WEREN’T GETTING ALONG!!!”

This was after Cloud experienced a grief trigger and is a separate essay you can read here: The Psychology of Cloud Strife

Anyway, while living with Tifa he was happy and experienced a peace he never had before.

This is CANON.

Cloud and Tifa also lived together for several months before problems started, and we are TOLD why the problems started.

That Cloud was unhappy with Tifa is pure lies since they directly contradict what the writers have said.

In Advent Children

The happier he is now, The more Cloud is tormented by painful “memories” of the past. -10th AU Cloud’s profile

The more he realizes how happy he is living with Tifa and the children, the more the fear of losing that and regrets toward the past trouble Cloud… -10th AU Cloud’s profile

The happier Cloud is, the more lonely he becomes.”-Nomura in Distance

“Nomura: Even though he found peace, Cloud has lost a lot of people dear to him up until this point. Not only that, but looking at Cloud’s history, this is the first time he’s experienced a ‘peaceful’ environment in the true sense of the word. Cloud is a character who will always keep thinking, regardless of what’s going on around him.”

Cloud tried to move on once…but he was hurt by the losses he experienced in the battles he fought in the game story. Even after all of that he still found a peaceful life. and that made him scared. he lost it all once already and he could lose it all again. even though he was there he couldn’t do anything to prevent it the last time. so the happier he is, the more lonely he becomes. - nomura : distance

“Nojima: Cloud never had a candid personality to begin with, and although he started living with Tifa and even started working, he obtained a peaceful living he’s never experienced before, and this conversely made him anxious. And in the midst of this he contracts Geostigma himself, and rather than being able to protect the people dear to him, he instead was forced to face his own death, and so ran away.”-Nojima in AC prologue.

In these quotes it states that not only was Cloud HAPPY living with Tifa, but the reason problems started was because Cloud was AFRAID he’d lose this peaceful and happy life.

“Cloud left to be with Aerith!!!!!”

No. He didn’t. This is once again speculation AND a complete contradiction as to why Cloud left.

It is answered that Cloud left because he got Geostigma.

Because he contracted Geostigma, Cloud left Tifa and the children, and began living in the Slum church. FF7 10th AU Complete Timeline

However, when Cloud contracts Geostigma he disappears. And in the midst of this he contracts Geostigma himself, and rather than being able to protect the people dear to him, he instead was forced to face his own death, and so ran away.”

After defeating Sephiroth, after his Geostigma is healed, he moves BACK IN WITH TIFA.

At the end of a long struggle, she gently welcomes back Cloud on his return home after settling things with himself.-Tifa’s Dengeki profile.

Aerith lends her power to the people suffering from Geostigma in Edge, and personally provides for Cloud’s recovery. Geostigma is cured. Cloud returns to Tifa and the children. FFVII 10th Anniversary

As for Cloud’s Promised Land…It is when he forgives himself, and has Denzel healed from Geostigma, his promised land is not with Aerith. His promised land is simply where he “meets” her, not reunites with her for all of eternity.

And, The Promised Land is suppose to be a state of supreme happiness. Aerith is the one who sends him back to Tifa and the children instead of welcoming him into The Lifestream like she does Kadaj. So it makes no sense that Aerith is his promised land and he’s still searching for her because he’s so lonely.

When Cloud awakes he finds his promised land, and goes back to living with TIFA.

The place where he awakens — That is Cloud’s Promised Land

As he sleeps, Cloud hears two voices. The voices of two people very dear to him, who are no longer with him. Playfully and kindly, they give him a message: he doesn’t belong here yet.

When he awakes, there was his friends. There were the children, freed from their fatal illness. Tifa and Marlene, and Denzel asking for Cloud to heal his Geostigma — his family were waiting. Engulfed in celebration, he realises where he is meant to live. He realises that he was able to forgive himself.

And when he turns around — “she” is starting to leave. Together with the friend who had given Cloud his life. Cloud no longer has to suffer in loneliness … And so they too go back to where they belong.

Back to the current of life flowing around the planet —.

When Cloud awakes he finds his promised land which is described above in the bolded section. He does meet Aerith  in his promised land. He also meets Zack in his Promised Land.

Cloud goes back to living with Tifa and the children, while Aerith and Zack go back to where they belong. The lifestream.

So…who does Cloud love? TIFA LOCKHART.

Also for good measure, Tifa was purposefully developed to be the heroine to stay by Cloud’s side.

Nomura: No, originally there was only Aerith, and Tifa was added as another heroine later. To make up for Aerith dying, we needed a heroine who would be by the hero’s side until the end
