for @timepetalsprompts ‘bed sharing’ trope. originally had a cracky interlude with donna, but sort of got too long (it still exists somewhere, though). fluff. and a little bit of crack and angst. ten x rose reunion fic.
He came around slowly; blinked a couple of times and attempted to focus on the mild haze of peachy and yellowish pinks in front of him. His head throbbed dully and persistently, inducing the vague feeling of nausea, which ricocheted upwards to his dizzy head. Feeling inexplicably warm and fuzzy, he let his eyes fall closed. When he opened his mouth, what escaped was a somewhat throaty sigh.
Instantaneously, a voice came drifting.
(Oh, what a nice voice. What a nice voice.)
“Donna, d’you know.” He slurred, tongue stiff and clammy in his mouth, “You sound JUS’ like Rose.”
Dear Pharaoh Sparklefists, Can you please explain the Yu-Gi-Oh ship names? I get so confused! :)
Since it’s you! ;)
Okay so, in the ancient past, the fandom decided it would be super fun and cute if, instead of just using the two (or more) character names, each ship got a cute little name. I understand similar fandoms of the time adopted similar systems which frankly just makes things more complicated.
The system seems to be built for
a defined, small set of characters and doesn’t even work particularly well then. In YGO:DM it works EVEN LESS WELL because many of the characters have ancient counterparts and the fandom adopted a splitter philosophy for what/who counted as a “separate character”. So even though Yami and Atem are the same person, Yami/Yugi is called puzzleshipping but Atem/Yugi is called blindshipping. Things get especially exciting when two “split” characters are shipped, resulting in FOUR DIFFERENT NAMES for YamiAtem/SetoSeth. (While I acknowledge there is a notable difference between pre-canon scandalshipping set in Ancient Egypt and post-canon prideshipping set after DSoD, I do not accept that it is a significant enough difference to warrent a whole ‘nother name since it’s not a bigger difference than 1920gangstersAU!prideshipping or RomanAU!scandalshipping or PacificRimAU!prideshipping OR PACIFICRIM!SCANDALSHIPPING the latter two of which could be indistinguishable except for skin colour and if you end up naming something based on skin colour, you’ve taken a very wrong turn somewhere.) (And while there’s arguments to be made that Seth and Seto are fundamentally different people who just happen to act and look almost exactly the same, Atem and Yami JUST AREN’T; the reason they act a little differently is because of character growth, you might as well have shy-early-canon!Yugi and king-of-games!Yugi be Totally Different Characters who need Totally Different Ship Names.)
ALSO lots of the ship names are stupid because they only refer to one of the characters #toonshipping #kleptoshipping. Or strain under the weight of their ridiculous reasoning #euroshipping #cageshipping. Or have reasoning that works but could (or should) apply to different characters #rivalshipping #dragonshipping.
The best thing about the ship names is that “prideshipping” does sound cooler than “Yami/Seto” or “Yato”. But it’s not even the coolest-sounding way of naming (I personally favour assigning each character an appropriate word, so Yami could be Pride, Seto could be Dragon, Pegasus could be Toon, Yugi could be Heart and then ships could be like, PrideHeart, DragonPride, ToonDragon (suck it Kaiba), etc)
Some very cool people curate a list, at ygo-dm-shippings-list.tumblr.com/list, you can ctrl+F to find names to narrow down your search (at least on Chrome, I presume other browsers also have some kind of Find function), so that’s my main resource for keeping up with conversations about ships!
Another prideshippy question - a lot of fics usually portray the relationship as being very physical, and intensely so, especially on Kaiba's side. Do you think there's canon evidence to suggest that's feasible? I have trouble imagining either of them being confident about that sort of thing - Kaiba has trust issues out the wazoo, and Atem is quite reserved, probably partially due to being royalty. Neither of them seem to go in for physical affection easily.
Are you the same anon? Loving these questions!
Okay so, I love the idea of them being intensely physical but it’s not going to happen cleanly and without awkwardness. Atem is reserved (although not as much as Seto is) and probably gets flustered when they start getting physical. Seto is a very handsome train-wreck of a man who has massive trust, intimacy, affection, self-knowledge and commitment issues, speaking generously. Seto either knows nothing about physical intimacy, or he has coldly researched the matter in fucking medical journals. (Or he’s had a previous relationship, maybe, in an AU, where the other person taught him stuff, but the chances of him having learned loving intimacy in a stable relationship is very low given the aforementioned laundry list of issues.) So, they’re not going into this as accomplished and generous lovers.
However, they’re both also just very intense, obsessive people. They’re obsessed with each other and they’re also both obsessed with doing well at things. So I think they could get there, because their obsession could easily turn physical. Basically I figure there’s a very awkward argumentative phase where they do that thing of finding excuses to touch each other but in an almost clumsy “I don’t know how to deal with these strong feelings” kind of way, like Seto grabbing Atem’s arm in an argument. There might be quite a long will-we-won’t-we phase where they kiss - angrily and clumsily - but don’t have sex and definitely don’t date. Neither of them is good at kissing nicely, we’re talking “their tongues duELED FOR DOMINANCE”. There’s a very awkward and argumentative “why should I let you fuck me if you won’t let me fuck you?” phase that could easily ruin their first attempt (I figure Atem allows Seto to top but only when he’s sure that Seto doesn’t disrespect him for it, which is hard to establish when Seto point-black refuses to consider letting Atem top, at least at first). There’s quite likely to be a “my research did not adequately prepare me for this” ruined second attempt. But eventually, since their obsessive, challenging natures keep pulling them together and pushing them to get as close as possible, and they are both very smart and reasonably self-aware, they’d figure it out. Kaiba is possessive, canonically he gets possessive of Atem as a rival and I don’t see why he wouldn’t be possessive as a lover. He also gets REALLY high on the things he enjoys and if that ends up being sex with Atem, he’s going to be ALL OVER THAT ALL THE TIME. All his Atem making him feel alive stuff could be multiplied in a sexual relationship. Meanwhile Atem is a very intense person who cares very very strongly, and if he entered into a relationship, he’d take it very seriously and relish the challenge. Plus he eases down his reserved vibe when he’s relaxed with someone he cares about; when it’s just him and Yugi he’s not so stiff and dramatic and regal, so I think he could get to that place with Seto too.
That said, I am 100% here for headcanoning either or both of them as anywhere on the ace spectrum, I can definitely see it. They could equally have a very intense relationship where they don’t go in for sex, or even don’t go in for physical intimacy at all, because neither of them are interested and they respect that in each other, and all their bonding and obsession stays in games and arguments and lets face it probably grocery shopping and shit.
