  • Me: You can appreciate your European roots through paganism and what not, but pride in whiteness as a race is disgusting because it's a social construct that was literally created by European ruling classes to privilege some people and dispossess others. The construct helped justify slavery, colonialism, and imperialism over the centuries; the fact that Italian and Irish people in the US, for example, weren't considered white a century ago and were in turn more severely oppressed demonstrates that whiteness is an arbitrary designation that sits atop a racial caste system, explicitly designed to grant privilege to those who have it and oppress those who don't have it.
  • White nationalist asshole: So you're saying we can't appreciate our roots?!

I don’t fear a black man in a hoodie.

I don’t resent my streets being shut down because protesters with Black Lives Matter shirts are protesting police brutality.

The only conversation we have about successful immigrants and how “no one complains about the Irish and how they were treated” because the Irish are predominantly white and without the Irish there is no police force for most of the northeast.

Italian Americans were distrusted during ww2 but they still got to serve and fight.

But Japanese Americans were put into American concentration camps.

America has always been a nation that is strongest for its immigrant heritage.

And the oldest American tradition is to hate immigrants because others were here first.

This is a roundabout post. I don’t fear immigrants. You know who scares me? What keeps me up at night?

White men. White men in business suits. White men in damn fine clothes.

It was white men in suits that taught poor white men to police the actions of black slaves. It was suited white men who stood with churches and began to preach the song of segregation and used the pulpit to legitimize their bigotry.

More people have died at the hands and from the decisions of suited white men than any other.

White men look at the pot of money and decide that most should go to the Good Schools because that’s where other white people are. The bare minimum goes elsewhere.

I went to school with the children of immigrants and gang members and drug dealers. My district was the 7th worst in the state of Colorado.

Because with malice or not, they decided the children of the poorest had no need to get an education at the level of anyone else. Even the middle class.

I don’t fear black people in hoodies.

I fear white men in suits who think they know what’s best for everyone.

Pulse Points

So this is Part 1 of my OQ Secret Santa gift to the most lovely emily31594.  I shall post Part 2 tomorrow, and hope to have Part 3 completed by Wednesday. I do hope you enjoy it, my dear. It has been a delight being your SS! :)

This tale is an homage to one of my most beloved movies, Return to Me. If you’ve never seen it, do yourself a favor and remedy that oversight immediately.

And with now further adieu, I shall leave you to it. Merry Christmas!

Dear Family,

I am writing to thank you for the gift you gave me and my mom. Two years ago, you gave her a heart, and it saved her life. Her heart was barely working, and she was on oxygen and hooked up to machines. She would be dead now, and I would be an orphan if you didn’t do what you did. I know somebody you loved had to die for her to get their heart, but it saved my mom’s life. And she’s all I have.

She is healthy now, and I still have a mom thanks to you. So I’m sorry you lost somebody you loved. But you saved my life because you saved my mom. And that heart is still alive and beating strong. One day, maybe I can thank you in person. But for now, I hope you get this letter. I hope it makes you feel better.

 ________________________________________________________

The letter shook in his hand, his eyes welling up until tears spilled over, wetting his cheeks, dampening his beard. This—even after he had read this letter countless times, even after another year had passed.

Two years—had it really been two years since he had lost her—his wife? His heart?

Would he ever be able to think about that night without feeling sick?

Yes, it had been Marian’s heart that had been cut from her chest and given to another, a woman he had been told, a mother, the letter had informed him. But his heart had ceased to function properly the moment his wife’s had stopped beating, and he sighed into the stillness, wondering if it would ever fully recover.

“It still hurts, Marian,” he murmured, shaking his head yet again at his habit of talking to her when the pain became acute. “God, I wish you were here.”

He turned to stare into the doorway, making certain Roland wasn’t listening. The boy had caught him once, and since that moment he had taken to speaking with his mother sometimes, assuring his father that yes—she could hear them, and yes—she still cared. He could never reprimand his son for such notions, and there were moments he thought he felt her, a lightness, a glimmer of something that felt like his wife. But he usually felt alone, fractured and dark.

And it hurt like hell.

Americans say they're Irish it's like saying your dog is a labrador because its great great great granddog was a labrador. It doesn't make logical sense. Incidentally I've been made to feel like shit a few times by Americans who say "I'm Irish too! What else are you?" and I can't answer because I'm just Irish. Suddenly they find me very boring.

What ELSE?
