it's sexism

if a person of color is telling you that you’re being racist you need to recognize it and apologize. if a gay/bisexual person is telling you that you’re being homophobic/biphobic you need to recognize it and apologize. if a transgender person is telling you that you’re being transphobic, recognize it and apologize. if a woman is telling you that you’re being sexist, recognize it and apologize. the line is not yours to be drawn.

From the same people that brought to you the blatant objectification of women in the media, we now bring you the blatant objectification of women in the media but with a little explanation WHY we’re doing this

And from the same people who brought to you whitewashing in the media, we now bring to you whitewashing in the media but with a little explanation to WHY we’re doing this

The problem with Women and Superhero shows

You know what’s really frustrating? How many TV shows, especially  superhero TV shows aimed at young people absolutely refuse to do something as simple as make sure that their show is gender balanced.Or show female characters have any connection with other women. Superhero shows are meant to inspire us, to show us a better way and yet they seem to hate the very idea of actually spending any time on female characters

Just look at all the TV shows we had till now .Can you think of one show where the the men don’t outnumber the women? Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Agent Carter…….the only one which actually bothered to some degree  was Agents of Shield*

Arrow is horrible when it comes to it’s treatment of female characters. We all know that. But they are also horrible when it comes to the actual presence of female characters.. And they don’t learn. Oliver’s new team of vigilantes had a 3;1 male to female ratio. Was there ANYTHING preventing them from making Rene or Rory a girl? And look at how isolated Felicity is from other girls. She has zero female friends

The Flash is also very much a guy show and Caitlin and Iris barely even interact with each other. Again was there anything to prevent Julian from being a girl? No. They absolutely refuse to include more female characters

Legends of Tomorrow has a two girl maximum. At least in the first seaosn Sara and Kendra were friends but now Sara barely even seems to talk to Amaya. And again there was nothing preventing them from making Nate a girl. Hell his issues with being sheltered and feeling helpless his whole life would have been even more impact if he was a girl

And the few shows we have which are supposed to be about girls? They are cringe inducing when it comes to these issues and absolutely get worse with time

Agent Carter was male dominated and the only somewhat female light in the show was Carter’s friendship with Angie. And they snuffed this completely in the second season in favor of a shitty love triangle. And don’t get me started in how they took a brilliant female historical figure and turned her into a pathetic villain

Supergirl is probably the worse when it comes to this. Look at how the show started. Although Winn has improved he started as a creepy toxic male geek. One of his very first lines was thinking that Kara was a lesbian because she didn’t want him. And when Kara turned him down he made her feel guilty and apologize to him. And he was presented as her best and ONLY friend. Kara Danvers had no female friends. Do you realize how insane this is?. Still season 1 wasn’t quite as bad. Kara had Cat as a female mentor, she overcome her hesitancy and develop respect and friendship with Lucy and James although he had a few minor glitches like his reaction to the Red Kryptonite was a goddamn awesome and healthy male character. But in season 2?

Although the introduction of Maggie and her realtionship with Alex is excellent it’s the ONLY bright spot. Everything else ruined the little they had. They ditched Cat in favor of Snapper, Lucy disappeared in the void of unappreciated female characters and instead we got freaking Mon El. The very definition of bland pretty boy. James was turned into some fragile insecure boy who feel threatened by by Kara’s status, Winn actually actively sabotaged Kara just so he and James can shine and again don’t get me started on Mon El. M’gann should have been one of the bright sides of this season but he was barely used. We got see more of Mon El’s fuck then of a fascinating and complex character like M’gann. The ONLY female friend Kara has is Lena and you know they are going to fuck with this,

Literally all of these shows actively isolate women from interacting with other women. Female friendship is treated as some flaky thing that can easily be ignored and erase while male friendship is celebrated and iconic. Just look at Oliver and Diggle, Barry and Cisco. On Legends they pushed Nate and Ray and Ray and Mick to bond and become friends  while Mick and Snart were beyond celebrated and iconic. On Supergirl they put more attention on Winn and James friendship then on any interaction Kara had with a girl that wasn’t her sister

Female friendships gets none of this. The closest we ever came was Carter and Angie’s and Sara and Kendra’s (and come to think of Sara and Sin) . And all of them got only a fraction of the time spent on male friendships and was erased completely later on never to be mentioned again

The only chance girls get when it comes to friendship is with male characters and this is often either a prelude to or baiting of a realtionship

THIS IS FUCKED UP. THIS IS DELIBERATE . WOMEN DESERVE MORE

*I am not gonna get into the Netflix shows as well since this already got too long but they have their own issues as well. Not quite as horrible as the CW shows but still bad

Implausible problem #16372920: Tenten's weapon shop is failing because the Shinobi system is supposedly like "haha we don't need ninja" BUT literally people buy stuff like that all the time as weird collectors. Walk into any Asian themed curio shop and you're going to be confronted with a huge ass weapons market so literally now I'm just angry realizing Kishi just wants to screw over female characters and... idk I don't know where I was going with this. Have some salt to share.

When you think about how issue 700 is a “where are they now” issue, with characters getting 1-3 panels each, how they appear in that small space matters even more.

Let’s rate all the female character appearance in 700 based on how much they uplift or downcast the character.

Anko: one of the only characters whose face is bright and cheerful in 700… but, she’s fat… and while I would really like to believe that making her fat isn’t meant to be making her a joke… well. We’ll give this portrayal 8 points out of 10, since at least she’s happy.
Hinata: genuinely looks happy, visiting cousin’s grave, being a good mom, 10/10
Tenten: miserable, failing business, all alone, 0/10
Temari: lecturing her son but gets ignored by him, is serving her brothers drinks but is uninvolved in actual ninja business, pinched face, 2/10
Ino: enraged, instantly blows up into bitch fest with Karui whom she addresses with utter loathing, the men trying impotently to calm the women down 1/10
Karui: tbh it is kinda fucking horrible that Karui treats the InoShikaCho formation so lightly. even if there is peace, there may not always be peace, and traditions like that are important to pass down. fight me, Karui. fight me right now. 1/10
Kurenai: hanging out at home in her kimono looking older than she should (does Kishimoto have any idea how 40-50 year old women actually look? Tsunade un-henged has the same issue in the original series, Jiraiya looks fantastic but Tsunade looks like the crypt keeper), looking confused as her daughter dashes off to Actually Ninja, 6/10
Tsunade: let the bitch fest commence! actually Tsunade is probably fine with this as long as there is an open bar. 10/10
Terumi Mei: one-dimensional character is one-dimensional. oh boo hoo hoo I’m a drop dead gorgeous kunoichi with two kekkei genkai but no body wants to date me boo hoo hoo WTF. in what possible universe would this woman have trouble finding a man. 0/10
Moegi:

Ga-chk indeed. At least she’s basically doing some kind of ninja thing here though. 8/10
Sakura: Woo boy. She’s shown dusting, complete with kerchief and apron.

Ok. let me get this straight. I’m a housewife, ok? Far be it from me to say that housewives are stupid, lame, useless, whatever. They/we are not. And housework and “low skill” cleaning is unfairly devalued, especially coded feminine tasks. But even I, who is comfortable in my identification as a feminist housewife, would not want to be depicted in a “where are they now” montage fucking dusting.

And Sakura is, at least supposedly, not just a housewife. She has really specific, important, rare skills regarding healing. It would make more sense for her to hire someone to do household chores (at a living wage!) so that she could spend more time keeping people from fucking dying. And then spend her well-earned off-time kicking back with a drink with an umbrella in it.

But it really comes down to this.

Did Kishimoto draw Naruto mowing the lawn? Did he draw Sasuke washing his clothes in a stream? No, he didn’t, did he?

Ok? THAT’S THE FUCKING DIFFERENCE, OK? DO YOU WONDER WHY?

0/100

Kurotsuchi: literally the only female in the room during the kage conference. She gets a 10/10 but we’ve gone from two female kages and three female bodyguards as of the fourth war, to one female kage and no female bodyguards. so that’s 10/50.

Final score: BOO YOU FAIL

Sexist and problematic things in K-Dramas that need to stop
  • Slamming women up against walls
  • Kissing women in their sleep
  • Forcibly kissing a woman when she clearly is trying to pull away
  • Just… kissing women without consent in general
  • Using a woman’s independence/strength/strong-headedness as an unattractive or undesirable aspect of their personality
  • Pitting women against each other because of a man
  • Only having 1-2 female characters, neither of which having any depth to their character and little to no backstory
  • Having the female lead’s mindset be centered around men or getting a man
  • Literally having no young female characters with high up job positions in companies and especially none without family ties
  • Frequently having an evil stepmother role, yet never having an evil stepfather role
  • Mothers constantly pressuring their daughters to get married
  • The gullible, clumsy female troupe
  • Making the female love interest’s problems more the man’s problem rather than her overcoming them herself
  • Over protective and over controlling boyfriends. Especially yelling ones.
  • Female characters giving up their identity or values for a man
  • Every single female character in a drama getting paired off with a guy but not the other way around
  • The women having bizarrely clean and expensive housing that is completely left unexplained and unrealistic to their economic status
  • Having the female lead be completely incompetent and dysfunctional in their work environment

Feel free to add anything I missed~!

You know what, I’m getting fuckign tired of this

Lets come up with some hypothetical scenario. Say I wanted to make a gender bend, say I wanted to turn Lance Mcclain from a user of he/him pronouns, to a user of she/her pronouns. Lance as a boy, looks like this

So, I’m gonna genderbend this character, ready? The picture of Lance below is now Lance Mcclain but now they will be a girl

Are you surprised? Well I wouldn’t be surprised if you were, since common genderbends usually make that character into stereotypes for that gender

When you genderbend a character you are implying that

  • All people fit on the gender binary
  • All characters are cisgendered
  • Someone who uses she/her pronouns must look traditionally feminine while a user of he/him pronouns must look traditionally masculine
  • And when you Change Lance’s name to Laura or Lily or whatever the fuck, your implying that names have to change with your gender identity

So artists, your art is amazing and lovely and you have great skills! But when your idea of a gender-bend is turning a teen aged boy into a character with big boobs and an hourglass figure, guess what, that is harmful!

I know making art is hard and it’s very time consuming and I’m greatful artists with such great skills wanna draw for our fandoms! Your amazing! But you have to know your media will spread and when someone who’s young sees that art and starts thinking that in order to be a girl you must look ‘feminine’, that affects how they view the world! And they take those stereotypes with them.

You want proof? You don’t believe me? I used to be that child! I was young and impressionable and I saw these amazing drawings and for a while I thought that in order for me to be a girl I had to look like those girls in the pictures! And when I looked at the girls section of the clothes store and I didn’t want to wear anything that was there, It did tremendous damage on my self confidence!

EDIT:

I was going through reblogs and reading tags and @occultgoths brought to my attention that genderbends are also intersexist! Since the implication that in order to belong to a certain identity, you have to have a certain pair of genitals or ‘look like’ that certain identity is also harmful to intersex people! Thank you to that person for bringing this to my attention!

TL;DR: GENDER-BENDS ARE HARMFUL! AND AWFULLY CISSEXIST AND TRANSPHOBIC! PLEASE STOP MAKING THEM! NO MATTER WHAT FANDOM YOU ARE IN!

Dear 13 year old female followers,
  • Don’t even worry that your body doesn’t look just like that woman on that magazine. Her body isn’t even real, yours is.
  • Just because you’re “not like other girls” doesn’t make you better than them (by the way, I KNOW you’re just saying that for guys to like you, I know because I used to say that). And of course you’re not like other girls, and they’re not like you either. Everyone is different somehow.
  • Life does get better (because middle school is trash for everyone)
  • It’s okay to like things that are different from what other people might like
  • Stand up for yourself,
“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent”
                       - Eleanor Roosevelt
  • You’re going to drift away from some of your friends that you have right now, but that’s okay, because you’ll make new ones really fast.
  • You don’t need straight As to be successful
    • Speaking of straight, you might not be, and that’s ok

(This is likely to get me into even more trouble, but whatever - the new Buckleming episode airs this week, so I’m guessing we’ll have worse problems by Friday.)

So, my dash seems to be split between pro-Mary and anti-Mary people, and the debate is getting pretty intense and occasionally awful. And I just wanted to say that yes, it’s probably true we hold women (and especially mothers) to different standards of behaviour, and I’m sure there are some overt or subconscious sexist components in our dislike, or even outrage, in some cases, of her actions this past week, but also - to me, the problem is that Mary started out in a good place and is now going downwards, if that makes sense. Like, Crowley - Crowley is fascinating in and of himself, but one big reason I feel so sympathetic towards him right now is because he started out as a selfish, even cruel villain and he’s experiencing an upward arc towards understanding and helping other people. And this is a popular trope and all, but it’s popular for a reason: because it gives us a sense of satisfaction to see someone become a better person.

(Also because two thirds of Western culture are basically Christianity, which is the poster boy of the Redemption Arc, so we’re probably pre-programmed to like this from birth, but whatever. It still makes for a good story)

Now, Mary - Mary started in the best possible place, that of the Innocent Murder Victim who, on top of everything else, was a Mother and Beautiful and Trying to Save Her Baby Boy - Jesus, there’s not much that will give you more points than all that. So it’s not surprising, really, that her arc must be downward, because how the hell would have she been able to go higher that actual martyrdom? So her having trouble connecting with her kids, her being secretive and skulking about and making deals with unsavoury characters - of course it’s nothing different or worse from what every single person on Supernatural has done for the past twelve seasons - the problem is not in the actions themselves, but in where they are in her character’s arc. That’s why, I think, we perceive her behaviour as less forgivable - not (only) sexism.

What I think Beauty and the Beast could’ve benefited from is an epilogue scene, something taking place after the happily-ever-after. Show Belle becoming a teacher or an inventor or something. Yeah, she’s gonna be a princess but she can still have a job, so let’s see her teaching other children to read, like she was doing with that one villager girl, or distributing her laundry invention to the washerwomen. The movie made a lot of how girls in the village are mistreated and left uneducated and that never went anywhere, no-one fixed it. Why not show her fixing it? :(

(There’s other things an epilogue could’ve done too! It could’ve shown Lefou happy with his new boyfriend, and Lumiere and Plumette getting married, and all sorts of fun stuff.)
