it's one of my favorite books. if not the best one

My Top Ten Television Shows of 2016

 1. I really did not expect the spin off of Breaking Bad to end up being another one of my favorite shows, but this show only got better in its second season. Bob Odenkirk proves that he can lead a show greatly and the writing is top notch. Jimmy’s journey to becoming Saul is absolutely worth being told.

2. The best news show on TV is also one of the funniest. Week after week, this show keeps proving that it’s one of the most intelligent shows on TV. John Oliver is one of our best comedians working today.

3. One of the best sci-fi shows in years. I’ve watched season one twice and it’s the best original show of Netflix I’ve seen. The ensemble cast is fantastic. Bring on season two.

4. Like John Oliver, Samantha Bee is another Daily Show alumni doing Jon Stewart proud. Bee doesn’t tone anything down. Each episode hits true and hard, while also being hilarious. We’re going to need shows like this and Last Week Tonight now more than ever.

5. The best comic book show on TV currently. One of my favorite characters has been so well represented and season two just further expanded upon that. With new characters like Elektra and The Punisher, this show’s only gotten bigger and better in the best possible way.

6. The last season stumbled a bit, but season four was a welcome return to form for one of the best and most underrated shows on TV. The tension only built further this season and now that we know there is an ending coming soon, it only made that finale hit harder.

7. Marvel’s road to The Defenders only got more exciting with this excellent series that tackles race issues and more without doing so in a cheesy comic book way. Mike Colter is perfectly cast as Luke Cage; playing a hero we needed now very badly. Also, Mahershala Ali made for one of the best TV villains of the year. I only wish we’d gotten more of him. And that soundtrack is dynamite.

8. It’s a shame this wonderful show got cancelled. Peggy Carter constantly proves that she doesn’t need superpowers to be one of Marvel’s best heroes. Season two further fueled my excitement that this wonderful character got such an awesome show. Track down both seasons if you haven’t already. They are well worth your time.

9. This is easily my favorite comedy on TV. Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer make for one of the best comedic duos in years. They do uncomfortable comedy flawlessly.

10. While the finale may have fizzled out in its final minutes, season two was an overall fun, disgusting, hilarious time. I’m really happy to see my favorite horror franchise continue on the small screen and I hope season three is headed in a good direction.

The Retriever (Newt Scamander & Reader)

Title: The Retriever (guys I still suck at titles help)
Words: 1,000 and change
Request/Summary:  A fic about how the reader finds out what Newt’s animagus is please :3 (anonymous)
A/N: I didn’t know what Animagus form Newt would take, but my best friend said he reminds her of a golden retriever, so voila. Also, the reader has taken on my habit of calling every dog I see a puppy. Whoops. And also I don’t even know if finite incantatem reveals Animagi. Double whoops.

It was a sunny day in Central Park. You were sitting on a bench and reading one of your favorite books, content with the warm sun on your face and the busy city as background noise. Heavily engrossed in your book, you didn’t even realize a dog had come up to you until it rested its head against your thigh.

Ice Ice Baby  1

Author: really-meg

Paring: OFC X Stiles

Word Count: 754 (Sorry its so short)

Series: Ice Ice Baby

Synopsis: The Beacon Hills Cyclones are one of the best high school hockey teams in the country. Stiles Stilinski: team caption, womanizer, cocky, sarcastic and extremely good looking. Alexandria Reyes: beautiful, brilliant, witty, kind and amazing at hockey. Two completely different people, one hockey team.

A/N: Here it is!! My new Stiles fanfic when i posted that teaser I accidently left in the hockey part but oh well… I really love hockey and Stiles but without the help of my one of my favorite books Puck You I wouldn’t of been inspired to write this. I really hope you enjoy this as much as i love it.

Stiles POV

It was finally here. Hockey season was upon us and today was the first day of tryouts. Thank god. After the long treacherous summer, all I’ve really wanted was to get back on the ice. I walked through the doors of school carrying my equipment over my shoulder.

“Aye, you ready for today?” Someone asked as I passed by.

“Couldn’t be readier,” I said happily. Normally I wasn’t in such a good mood, almost never. But there were a few exceptions today being one of them. I continued down the hallway getting the usual ‘hey’s’ and ‘smiles’ mostly from the girls on that last part. I see Malia and Lydia leaning against their lockers laughing.

ok u must get this a lot but what are your favorite books with queer protags???

- Grasshopper Jungle by Andrew Smith – teenage boy explores his bisexuality as he wrestles with his guilt over a) having feelings for both his best friend and his girlfriend and b) accidentally starting the apocalypse-by-giant-preying-mantis. (literally my favourite book.)

- The Vintner’s Luck by Elizabeth Knox – grumpy vintner bumps into an angel one night when he’s pickled and wandering around the vineyard, and winds up making a date to meet once a year, on the same night, forever. you will probably cry yourself to sleep afterwards.

- As Meat Loves Salt by Maria McCann – sociopathic romp through Civil War era England accompanied by THE WORLD’S SLOWEST BURN and MURDER. even if you’ve been an English Civil War nerd for 15 years before reading this book, this book will forever be the first thing you think of when you think of the English Civil War. a scourge.

- Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters – cute girl leaves home and becomes a music hall male impersonator. lesbian shenanigans by the barrowful follow. set in Victorian London and actually has a happy ending! yay!

- Running With Scissors by Augusten Burroughs – a memoir documenting Augusten Burroughs’ teenage years living with his mother’s psychiatrist and his madcap family. I took this in stride when I first read this book at the tender age of 14, but now it gives me PALPITATIONS and a BURNING URGE to ring Esther Rantzen.

- Call Me By Your Name by Andrew Aciman – THE PEACH BOOK!

- The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller – I love this book so much I have to forcibly stop myself from buying a copy every time I see one in a secondhand bookshop. you go into it thinking you’ll be FINE because everyone KNOWS what happens to Patroclus, it’s not like you WON’T SEE IT COMING… and yet. no one is ever fine.

- Maurice by E. M. Forster – astounding and wonderful book that was, surprisingly, written in 1912. there’s sex, it’s a happy ending, it has something very snotty to say about British attitudes towards homosexuality – it’s a joy. plus, the Merchant Ivory film version is full of totty. (yes, that’s Rupert Graves. you see him starkers. just saying.)

- Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz – two Latinx boys falling in love. I read the entire thing in one sitting. it’s won so many awards you can barely see the cover art. deserves all the accolades and love, as it is HEARTBREAKINGLY GORGEOUS.

- More Than This by Patrick Ness – there is absolutely no way to explain this book without spoiling everything about it, so here’s the bare bones: Seth drowns, and then wakes up, alive, but completely and utterly alone. I had to put it down and go for stress walks at least 3 times. so good.

- The Charioteer by Mary Renault – a soldier wounded in the evacuation of Dunkirk recuperates in hospital and tries to choose between two dudes: a young and innocent conscientious objector and a saucy and experienced naval officer. can I get a HAIL MARY?

Tsuki to Suppon / Moon and Turtle

Plot: A story about Atsushi and Todomatsu, who have reunited again after graduating from high school.

Artist: 文旦
Please support the artist by buying this book if you can!

Another doujin translation from my small AtsuTodo collection. I love this one actually, it might be my favorite out of all of them. ;; It’s a sweet one.

Scanlated by me (s/o to iva for being the best again and helping with q/c!). As always, please let me know if you want to use these scans for anything.

Read on Imgur here.

Note: Moon and the turtle is a Japanese idiom that has a meaning similar to “like chalk and cheese” or “like day and night.” On the surface, they share some common characteristics, but are extremely different in actuality. Both the moon and the turtle are round, but the moon shines bright in the sky while the turtle is in the ground, often dirty and covered in mud.

im not giving up yet on klance or voltron bc im just takin solace in the fact that (for me at least) in every fandom the first book/series/season is great and then the second is the Worst. like catching fire? ugh. supernatural after s1? disgusting. chamber of secrets? not the best. its just a thing. plus in legend of korra people constantly shat on korrasami in s2 and then they became endgame... and those guys r the same guys who r writing voltron so hopefully theyre at least aware.

I’m NEVER giving up on Klance tbh anon. Not after dedicating 7 months of my life to them.also you have a point, the second book in a series is usually the worst one, and same for a lot of shows.

Also we didn’t get a lot of Bonding but we did get some. That elevator scene? Amazing. The blue lion conversation? One of my favorites in the show. My only problem is that they practically promised LGBT representation and exploring different sexualities and then not delivering. queerbaiting 101

the Campania arc is one of the best arcs we've ever been given and this is the first and only chance its going to be animated, I want it to not only be done well but to be done right. we have waited years for this and I think this arc deserves all the effort it could possibly be given despite it costing the studio a bit more money. evidently, i don't want ANYTHING to be left out of this movie. iF LIZZY SNEEZES IN THE MANGA DAMMIT I BETTER SEE THAT SMALL GIRL ANIMATED SNEEZING IN COLOR TOO

@starlight-ciel 1,000% agreed! The Campania arc is my favorite and I need every single detail animated. Everything. Too much love and patience has gone into it and they cannot let us down at this point. They just cannot. This is the most popular arc and the one that gives almost everyone a chance to shine.

All 3 reapers show up, Lizzie gets major spotlight, the contract’s origins are shown, Undertaker reveals his face TM, Sebastian gets wreckt, etc. I am ready for this HD animated glory. Please be 2 hours.

SNEEZE LIZZIE SNEEZE. This needs to be the movie we deserve!

Favorite anime/manga : Monster, K-On!, Love Hina, Neon Genesis Evangelion. Monster is the best seinen I’ve ever seen, K-On! speaks to me on a basis of personal history and Love Hina is pretty much what started my whole love for manga and NGE is simply a masterpiece.Yes, even the ending.

Favorite video games : The Binding of Isaac is one I always come back to. FF IX is in my opinion the best one of the series and recently Darkest Dungeon is brawling with TBoI for the number one spot on my Vita. Saints Row 2 holds a place of honor for its over the top hilarity on one hand and surprisingly emotional and dark storytelling on the other.

witchboy book rec

so! since i’ve already done a witchboy fic rec i figured it was time to do an actual book rec for things i’ve read with magic! there aren’t very many, because i tried to only put my very favorites on this list, but everything i’ve listed here is incredibly well-written and has a magic system to die for.

the name of the wind by patrick rothfuss
this goes at the top of the list because it is hands-down one of the best books i have ever read. after the murder of his parents kvothe goes on to learn a complex form of magic known as sympathy. this story gets top marks for having fantastic characters and world building, as well as having a devastatingly gorgeous writing style.

a darker shade of magic by v. e. schwab
this book (and its sequel, a gathering of shadows) are excellent because of the worldbuilding. kell is a magician who can move through the universes into alternate londons. one day a dangerous magical object falls into his hands from ruined black london, and along with it comes lila bard, the magic one-eyed cross-dressing pirate thief that we all deserve. this book has canon lgbtq+ characters!

the night circus by erin morgenstern
another high favorite of mine. celia and marco are two magicians taught in entirely different ways who are locked into a dangerously competitive game by their teachers, set against the backdrop of the mysterious night circus. this book is beautiful. please read it.

carry on by rainbow rowell
i just read this one recently! it’s a good idea to read fangirl first, if only to gain the necessary background to understand the fanfic-within-a-fanfic wonder that is ‘carry on.’ baz pitch and simon snow are rival students (and roommates) at a school with an extremely interesting language-based magical system. this book has canon lgbtq+ characters!

literally anything written by tamora pierce
this one speaks for itself. lots of magic, and all the strong female characters you could wish for.

sabriel by garth nix
this one is mostly centered around necromancy! i confess it’s been several years since i’ve read this trilogy, but i thought it was excellent, and sabriel is a wonderful leading lady character.

if you read any of these please come and let me know your thoughts! i love these books a whole lot and i’m always down to talk about any and all of them. you know of any i’ve missed or have others to recommend, let me know! and happy reading!

EDIT: this has a few additions which can be found here. enjoy!

This is a book by Jonathan L. Howard.

Genre: fiction, fantasy, steampunk
Setting: Mirkarvia, Senza, who the fuck knows
# of Pages: 288
Rating: 5/5 this series is the fucking best

The skinny: A necromancer with his own twisted moral code solves a murder mystery while trapped on a giant blimp. I shit you not.

The fat: The first book in the Cabal series, The Necromancer is far and away my favorite book I’ve read this year. It’s weird and wonderful and wickedly funny. Howard has created a fascinating character in the person of Johannes Cabal–a necromancer with big ideas, no scruples, and everything to lose. In the first book, he makes a deal with the devil. In the second, he unravels a locked-room mystery confined to a floating hotel while disguised as a government official. It’s one part fantasy, one part horror, one part steampunk, one part something entirely its own.

Howard’s world is a curious one–at times you can’t figure out where you are. England? Germany? Made-up countries that are not so subtly based on real countries? What the hell is the time period? Nobody knows, but oddly enough, it doesn’t really matter. Howard sashays through this puzzling fantasyland with such authoritative aplomb that there isn’t much for the reader to do but shrug and say, “Tallyho.” Even more engaging than the world is the cast of characters who inhabit it. Cabal is the most intricately rendered anti-hero to make his debut for some time, but besides our endearingly amoral lead, we meet (in the first installment) Cabal’s undead brother Horst, a few of Cabal’s zombified cronies, and the Devil himself. In the second, we meet the sadistic Count Marechal, a trained assassin, a bar snacks salesman, a hotheaded revolutionary, and the other peculiar passengers of the airship Princess Hortense. This time it’s a diabolical mystery instead of a Faustian carnival, but it definitely doesn’t disappoint.

Howard’s undoubtedly got an imagination, but that’s only one part of the equation–he’s also got the linguistic finesse of a true storyteller. His prose is sharp and witty and surprising, and it would be difficult to get through any of Johannes Cabal’s absurd adventures (so matter-of-factly carried out that they hardly seem absurd at all) without laughing out loud. A favorite example:

“It didn’t really matter if Cacon was a phenomenally boring man or some variety of secret agent pretending to be a phenomenally boring man. The overall effect was still that of being talked at by a phenomenally boring man. Cabal found that he was phenomenally bored by him.”

I can’t say enough good things about this series. I can’t wait to get my hands on The Fear Institute and The Brothers Cabal and will be keeping a sharp eye out for Howard’s future endeavors. Not to be missed.

And so Ends my favorite Book to come out of the Nu52 (not the best book but my favorite)

It was the little title that could, Surviving Controversy, Trolls and a poor writer change, It went the distance. It found its fanbase and its voice, and it gave 40 awesome issues (plus Annuals). It survived where some wished it to fail, and Taught me That you are not defined by your past.

It took 3 characters that before the Reboot were all damaged beyond repair, and using the opportunity offered by a universal reset, rebuilt them. They still have their edge but they are happier.

The Mind (Roy)

The Body (Kori)

The Spirit (Jason)

A perfect trinity that supported each other, helping one another to become hole.

A book about friendship, and forgiveness.

This Gave them all agency, gave them stories that could be told about them that didn’t revolve around individuals or tragic stories, they were able to grow mend, broken bonds and create new ones. I will miss this book, And i hope the 2 books spinning off form this are good.

P.S Please lord don’t turn Starfire into a spacehippy.

My best tip for an aspiring artist:

Carry a sketchbook at all times. Always be sketching. Carry it with you for ideas, but most importantly to just draw whatever you see. A sketchbook is like a GYM for an artist. You go to the gym to train for the big game, lots of training- thats what the sketchbook is for. Draw your favorite stuff, but when you are at a loss, sketch (not finished drawings, just sketching) what you see around you, draw from real live and it will feed your own comics, even if it is fantasy and far away from real life. Seriously, this is a big one, I still bring one with me everywhere. I was just typing this to a young person for advice and realized its really the best advice I could give anyone.

Things I Love About LoK

Goal: Write 1 thought every day re: why I love The Legend of Korra until I finish rewatching the series.

#122: Tenzin & Co. try and fail to recruit airbenders in “Rebirth.”

Maybe I’m too old for this, but one of the things I loved about ATLA was its humor and, in particular, the balance that the show struck between drama, humor, and emotion.  I love that LoK tackles more complex issues and has a darker, more serious tone than its predecessor – but I also miss a lot of the ATLA humor.  Bolin and Bumi did their best in Books 1 and 2, but it wasn’t until Book 3 that I think LoK once again settled on that good drama/humor/emotion balance.

One of my favorite humorous sequences in Book 3 is the one in which Tenzin and company try and fail to recruit new airbenders.  We alternate between adorable chibi drawings of the Krew …

…  and Tenzin’s tone-deaf attempts to appeal to people who are settled in their lives and unwilling to drop everything to go live nomadic lives in the air temples …

With each failure the chibi drawings get less happy …

Much of the humor comes from J.K. Simmons’ delivery of the lines.  But it also comes from the juxtaposition between the subject being courted and Tenzin’s misguided appeal.  Here, Tenzin tries to sell a meat-loving man on the air nomad “vegetarian diet”:

And here, he tries to sell a fashionably dressed woman on “breathable” airbender robes:

Poor Tenzin gets more desperate with each stop:

It’s hilarious.  And it’s also tinged with sadness, in that Tenzin is trying so hard.  He wants so much to recreate air nomad culture, and he feels so much passion for this mission.  But he can’t convince folks to abandon their lives and families to start a whole new one.
