The REAL Superman Halloween special: SUPERMAN VERSUS FIVE THOUSAND DRACULAS

The other 4,999 run away when one tries drinking Superman’s solar-fueled blood and bursts like a balloon.

The prospect - and specifically its opposite - does remind me of one great idea Andy Diggle mentioned having for Action Comics before his run was prematurely aborted: that in the distant future when our sun has gone red the last living vampire has successfully emerged into the safe red light and devoured all remaining life on Earth, and now travels into the past to feast on Superman and become an all powerful SUPER VAMPIRE capable of leaving our solar system and conquering the universe. Wish I had that to go back to this evening; I did reread Batman: Night of the Monster Men though, which was an acceptable substitute for the holiday.

STELLE LIKES POWERS — lunar manipulation [ˈluːnə/ məˌnipyˈlāSHən]

(n.) the ability to manipulate lunar energy..

Also known as lunakinesis and menekinesis, lunar manipulation is an intriguing ability. After the Sun, the Moon is the brightest object in the sky. For thousands of years, it has had great influence iin language, calenders, art and mythology, while its gravity produces the ocean tides and the minute lengthening of the day. A user of lunar manipulation is known to create, shape and alter all aspects of the Moon, meaning it can greatly effect planets and time.

Lunakinetic combat is an option they can take, but very few lunar manipulators follow that path. Their peace and understanding is unrivalled; they’d only fight back if it was the only option. It is for this reason that menekinectics are often overlooked and considered weak in the eyes of others. They are great companions, sidekicks, and it is this role they flourish in. The moon and it’s cycles are helpful with those associated with emotions, blood, illusions, shapeshifting, and fertility.

Because of their placid nature, lunar manipulators do not have any enemies, nor do they have any known weaknesses. Since their abilities are tied to the Moon itself, cycles must always be taken into account. Their powers are at their peak during a full Moon and, during a new Moon, they are rendered powerless. If a user plays with lunar energy too much, they also run the risk of developing depressive disorders. The Moon is a very fragile toy, one false move can cause disaster.

1971 Citroën DS 21.

Sinister Sunday, part V: Although being admired for its excentric design, La Déesse was built far away from mechanical grandeur and they’re notoriously rotting away like French oysters in the sun. Here’s one of those candidates, where 44 years of laissez-faire left their mark: at least three mediocre paintjobs, rust leaking everywhere, and the whole thing would only start up using an APA portable power pack. Eventhough moving a DS in such shape is a bold undertaking, the owner seemed quite confident when he showed up.

Another bold undertaking is to preserve authentically and keep it up and running, especially if you live a couple of thousand French royal foot far away in, let’s say … New York City.

How It All Began (One Shot - Origin Story)

Just a little idea in the back of my mind. A possible imagining of what had happened if the Candle Maker and Xibalba both liked La Muerte in their earlier years. This is a creation story as well, so I might make another one of these when I have the time - with more romance-interaction between the Candle Maker and La Muerte.

—————————————————————————

All of you know the story of La Muerte and Xibalba, don’t you children? Of their love and their disagreements? Of her wager, and his cheating?

Well, what you might not know, is that once they weren’t married at all! Not husband and wife. No ‘mi vida’ or ’mi amor’. Once, it could very well have been…La Muerte and the Candle Maker.

Once upon a time, long before San Angel, when Man was still as innocent and pure as animals, there was only the Candle Maker and Xibalba to judge Man.

It was a very simple cycle: the Candle Maker gave life to Man and all living things, and Xibalba received them when their candles ran out. Neither had much to do with the other, considering the simplicity of their jobs, and the rules were clearly outlined. Once in a while, they might pass each other by, when Xibalba would wander to the surface, and pass by the Candle Maker to and from. But it was a limited exchange, and the best one could describe their relationship was ‘acquaintances’.

Now, children, when Man began to change - the question of good and evil arose. Would all who passed live in the same place? What if murderers and thieves were lumped together with saints and innocents?

No,’ said the Gods above and below, ‘The afterlife would be full of unrest if it were so.

To fix this mortal dilemma, the Gods pointed their attention to Xibalba, for there was only one Land of the Dead at the time, and he ruled it in its entirety.

Why should we have to do anything?“ asked Xibalba, ”Humans have killed, stolen, and cheated to survive in the past - and they still do so now. There isn’t a difference!

The Candle Maker, who had crafted each and every single life lovingly with his hands, rose to defend his creations.

Now hold on,” the Candle Maker protested, “Sure, there are some bad ones, but some are good! People who are loved even when they’re gone, people who never hurt another living soul from birth ‘til death. Surely there’s a better fate that might await them?

The Gods, knowing that the afterlife would be in chaos if Xibalba were to have his way, agreed with the Candle Maker. However, Xibalba was made to be the all-powerful ruler of the Land of the Dead, and not even the Gods could change that - for they were the ones who made it so.

Instead, they crafted a new being - one who was the complete opposite of Xibalba in every way. They plucked fresh marigolds from green fields, to make the being appreciate the beauty of living things, and ground sugar cane to make the sweetest sugar for its personality. They cut a piece of the night sky to make its hair, and weaved cloth made of sun-fire that glittered like a thousand rubies. To finish their creation, they molded it into the shape of a beautiful woman.

Once finished, they breathed the fire of the earth - lava - into her, and her eyes lit up with a brilliance that bewitched all who looked at her. Nameless, she looked up at her creators, and asked for her name.

We made you to give the good souls of Man a place to dwell, without fear and conflict,’ they told her, ‘A guardian, not keeper, of the dead. Thus, you shall be named “La Muerte”.

With her creation complete, the Gods summoned the Candle Maker and Xibalba to welcome their new companion and give gifts. And when they did, they could not believe their eyes.

The Candle Maker saw beauty in all things he made, but it was likened to a parent and its offspring. The being he saw before him made his already-gigantic heart swell, and beat harder than it had ever beat before.

Xibalba, on the other hand, never saw the beauty in anything. Yet, not even the King of the Dead could deny the radiance of La Muerte, his eyes blinded by her beauty and turned red.

When asked to present their gifts, the Candle Maker gave her candles he made himself - 100 candles that would obey her and never run out. He demonstrated for her, and performed tricks that brought a knee-shaking smile to her lips.

Determined to win her favor, Xibalba presented her with the gift of shape-shifting. She could transform into any living creature that she wished, and interact with the beings of Earth without attracting attention.

Man, I know you ain’t trying to show me up,” the Candle Maker whispered, pulling the winged God aside, “I saw her first!

Of course you did, Candle Maker,” he replied, his now-red eyes flashing, “I couldn’t see her past your hulking, waxy body in the first place.

Ohhhh, you wanna play that game, huh? Okay,“ the Candle Maker linked his hands together and stretched them out in front of him, cracking joints, ”You ain’t even in her league.

Now at war, the two Gods started to compete for the lovely La Muerte’s affections.

The Candle Maker, master of creation, used his talents to warm and humor her dulce heart, creating animals of all shapes and sizes - from the sly, furry jackal to the colorful flamingo. To romance her, he welcomed her into the Cave of Souls, and she would marvel at how wondrous it all looked - millions upon millions of souls that burned brightly and passionately.

Xibalba, unfortunately, had nothing so pretty or lovely to show her. Instead, he tried to make her see things the way he did - the ugliness of the world and the ugliness of Man’s hearts. Obviously, this didn’t have the intended effect when he showed her the state of his Land, and she promptly backhanded him on her way out.

When all had seemed lost, and the Candle Maker was to win her heart, Xibalba played one last trick: he proposed a wager. The innocent and naive La Muerte had never known gambling nor Xibalba’s trickster ways, and agreed to the bet without understanding.

So, what is a wager?“ she asked, curious and wondering.

It’s simple, my dear,” he answered, one of his wings folding against her to close the distance, “We bet on something, with different outcomes, and one will win. The one who wins gets something.

Then…what shall we wager?” her eyes sparked with newfound interest.

See those two mortals down there?“ he pointed to two humans, ”I wager that the woman will die before the man.

…Then I must wager that the man will die before the woman?“ she theorized, and Xibalba nodded.

And if the woman dies first, I win and have your hand in marriage,” he answered, grinning with razor-sharp teeth.

And if I win…” La Muerte paused, thinking, “You must part your Land with me. One above and one below, and I get the one above.

Confident that the weak woman would die first, Xibalba shook on the deal, and the both of them observed their respective human together. However, unexpectedly, both of their humans started to become attracted to each other, and it wasn’t long until two humans become five in total. The woman became stronger, and Xibalba cursed in vain, while La Muerte couldn’t help but smile at both the woman’s fortitude and Xibalba’s frustration. She couldn’t help it, something about his little temper tantrums made him adorable in her eyes, and it all started from there.

While they watched, La Muerte was able to get to know Xibalba better, and found him more and more charming as time went on. However, the Candle Maker, who thought he’d won her, tried to warn La Muerte of Xibalba’s cheating ways, but she was stubborn.

I’m telling you, he never plays fair when it comes to bets,” the Candle Maker warned, “Come to the Cave of Souls tonight. If Xibalba doesn’t try to blow out your human’s candle, then I won’t say another word.

La Muerte had become so very fond of Xibalba that she found it hard to doubt him, but she did as the Candle Maker suggested. That night, the sugar skull hid behind one of the many magic waterfalls, watching for the tarred God. And to her heart’s dismay, Xibalba did indeed come to snuff out her human’s candle. While his cheating did shock her, it was the fact that he was willing to snuff the candle of a mother of three young children, which dismayed her most of all.

XIBALBA!!!!” she yelled, startling him as his fingers reached up to grab the wick of her human’s candle, “HOW DARE YOU?!? How dare you cheat on this bet!!! How dare you try and take this precious life?!?

Xibalba tried to explain himself, but she whirled herself away without giving him a second chance, into the arms of the Candle Maker. With his trickery laid bare, the terms of the wager were in La Muerte’s favor, which meant she would gain a Land of her own. On the Candle Maker’s suggestion, she named it ‘the Land of the Remembered’, and from it, she shunned Xibalba and all evil souls who had passed.

However, the dark God did not give up on his beloved, and crawled to her on the eve of her wedding night to the Candle Maker.

Please, La Muerte, mi corazon,” he pleaded, “I only cheated to win your hand. I…I just couldn’t wait.

La Muerte was already preparing her wedding dress when she stopped, giving him only a brief moment to explain. And as it turned out, it was just enough.

When I first saw you, I thought only of your beauty,” he came close to her, and took one hand in his, “But when we talked, and laughed, I began to fall in love with your spirit, too. I did cheat, mi amor, I will not lie to you - but I only did it because I was desperate, and afraid. I loved you too much to leave it to chance…

La Muerte’s hardened gaze had softened, and she put her other hand to his cheek.

Do you still love me?” she asked, and was answered with a turn of his head, nuzzling his face into her palm.

Then you are a fool, Xibalba,” she saw him grow dismal before she leaned in and kissed him gently on the lips, “Did you think that I wouldn’t have married you anyway had you not won? I love you, too, mi vida.”

Shocked, the winged God was left speechless, which La Muerte took advantage of and planted another tender kiss on his lips.

T-Then…you would do me the honor of becoming my wife?“ his proposal was shaky, and barely coherent, but La Muerte nodded with a smile on her rosy lips. They kissed for a third time, and from then on, her kisses had the power to make him absolutely melt.

Of course, they had to talk to the Candle Maker, who gave up without much fuss. He knew from the moment she had accepted his marriage proposal that La Muerte’s heart belonged to another, and he didn’t have it within himself to deny her what she really wanted. Thankful, La Muerte and Xibalba swore to be loyal to the Candle Maker, and to care for their respective custody of souls until the end of time.

And that, children, is how the La Muerte almost came to be the Candle Maker’s wife.
