The differences between Darkiplier and Antisepticeye

Obviously we see Anti and Dark as two similar beings because they’re both the evil counterparts or the demons of two great guys who are best friends. Though I think that they’re also very different for many different reasons. Let’s break it down a little and spot the differences, shall we?

Let’s start with Anti.

Antisepticeye, otherwise known as Jack’s evil counterpart or demon, has made many appearances already - even recently. His look can be interpreted however you want, but he has been portrayed a certain way on the channel for some time now. He seems to look exactly how Jack does whenever he appears. But during one longer appearance, he was seen with all black clothing (a black shirt and ripped jeans) and some ear gauges (you can see this in Jack’s ‘Say Goodbye’ video). You could assume that this is Anti’s regular style. We’ve also seen him with black eyes (also in the ‘Say Goodbye’ video) which could possibly mean that he’s a demon.

Anti’s appearances have been brief for the most part. He appears in the form of glitches in Jack’s face cam (you can see a lot of this in Jack’s ‘Five Nights At Freddy’s - Sister Location’ videos) and only stays for a few seconds, though his appearances grew gradually more frequent as the end of October got closer. The only video in which he’s made a longer and much stronger appearance is in Jack’s ‘Say Goodbye’ video.

A quick example.

Anti’s voice is also far from normal, as far as we know. It’s very distorted and sounds like there are multiple people speaking at the same time, all in different pitches. This kind of matches his glitchy appearances.

Another thing about him is that he’s very violent. In multiple appearances, Anti has been seen using his fingers as guns and holding them to his head, strangling himself, pulling at his hair or face or mouth, or with blood somewhere on his face. In the ‘Say Goodbye’ video, he even goes as far as making Jack slit his own throat. He’s displayed as a crazy character, even borderline psychotic.

Picture it this way: if Anti was given the opportunity to torture someone, he wouldn’t hesitate. He would use all the pretty little toys he had and make it as enjoyable as possible - for him. He is merciless, violent and crazy and this could be due to Jack’s excessive amount of energy being manifested into something evil. His idea of fun is extremely dangerous, bloody and painful.

So, Anti is practically a psychopath.

Now, onto Dark.

Darkiplier, otherwise known as Mark’s evil counterpart or demon, hasn’t made nearly as many appearances as Anti. There were theories about him in Mark’s earlier videos ‘Don’t Blink’ and ‘Dont Move’, but he’s been nothing more than a theory since then. People came up with their own ideas and conclusions while Anti was around. But he has finally made an appearance in one of the paths you take when you go to Mark’s video, ‘A Date With Markiplier’ (to get to him you have to click ‘Pay’ and then click ‘Horror’. If you want to follow through then you have to click on ‘Freedom’ and finally, kill the guy on ‘Left’.)

So far, his attire is different from Anti’s. Of course, he was wearing the suit that Mark was wearing during the date, but it oddly seemed to suit him (pun intended). Already off the bat, this leads us to think that Dark may prefer cleaner or more professional attire as opposed to black t-shirts and ripped jeans. Another thing is that he seems to like wearing black eyeliner, unless that’s some sort of natural dark circle around his eyes. Either way, creep factor.

Dark’s appearances haven’t been as glitchy as Anti’s. There are a few moments where he’s seemed to glitch out slightly, but for the most part he’s more ‘stable’. Although, there does seem to be some sort of layering effect in his appearances or some sort of 3D filter - like there are duplicates of him. His stance is also very proper, with his hands gingerly held behind his back as he talks. That, and his appearances have been longer than Anti’s. He sticks around to even converse with the viewer, whereas Anti will only stick around for a few seconds in the face cam, just long enough for someone to notice him.

An example for Darky.

Dark’s voice is a lot deeper than Anti’s, kind of like Mark’s is deeper than Jack’s. Though, it’s almost abnormally deep for someone with Mark’s face. It’s also very echoey, as though he was appearing in a vision or a dream.

Now this is where the major difference comes out.

Unlike Anti, Dark looks very calm and reserved. He speaks slowly, carefully and clearly - as though he’s having a conversation with a colleague at work. He doesn’t seem violent in any sort of way and doesn’t imply that he wants to cause harm to anyone. It’s just that his entire demeanor and way of speaking is very … Dark. I guess he lives up to his name. Rather than being crazy and excitable like Anti, he’s just cold and intimidating.

Picture it this way: if Dark also had the opportunity to torture someone, he wouldn’t go about it the same way. He would most likely use his words to slowly drive the person mad, to frighten them out of their skin. His definition of fun wouldn’t be to hear the person’s screams or see a gory scene - no, his fun is all in the scares. Sure, eventually he gets around to the torture, but he doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who likes to make a mess, you know?

So, Dark is a cold, merciless killer.

Anti and Dark are very similar but also very different, which makes them that much more interesting to observe and analyze. The two of them working together would be the perfect recipe for a vengeful murder. Of course, they’re super fun to watch from afar.

Just don’t piss them off.

First of all, I can do whatever I want. Second of all, I can do whatever I want. And third, I can do whatever I want.

Okay? Glad we established that. With that out of the way, I’m gonna be very clear with people like you who keep telling me and other people like what we should want, need and demand. 

Star has done a lot in terms of destroying gender roles and other stereotypes and taboos for kids and young people out there. Its characters are not flat and they have their own personalities, their own lives and agency, which don’t conform to gender norms as they have been force-fed to us by society. Breaking this kind of stereotypes is gonna be so liberating for so many kids. For example:

  • You don’t have to be girly to be a girl (Janna is into a lot of creepy and icky stuff usually considered boyish, just to mention someone)
  • Being feminine doesn’t define your gender (Marco, and I’m gonna get back to you on this)
  • Having trouble managing your anger does not make you a bad person (Tom. who is working so hard to keep it under control and improve because he wants to be better)
  • You can have a bunch of mixed, apparently contradicting traits, and that doesn’t make you less worthy of the gender you identify with (Star is very girly and likes cute stuff but still kicks ass and loves every second of it)
  • Boys can be affectionate with other boys (if we assume, based on what we know at the moment, that Marco identifies as a boy, and again, I’ll get back to you on that), and that’s okay (Marco and Tom, even though I still think the whole Friendenemies episode was very homoerotic)

I’m really grateful for this new wave of cartoons (such as Star vs The Forces of Evil, Gravity Falls or Steven Universe). Different shows are exploring different themes from different angles, and that doesn’t mean that one is necessarily above the other. Star may not be exploring queerness in full (like Steven Universe does, for example), more like touching upon its surface, but it is still playing a role in its normalisation.

Never did I say that the infamous 1-second gay kiss was good rep. For me to call it rep, I would need it to feature at least characters whose names we know. But you know what? I’m okay with it being something in the background and I don’t consider it gaslighting, because as far as I know, the show did not make a big deal out of it, they did not announce “Hey! We are giving you guys gay rep! Look at all the diversity we’re including!”. I actually heard nothing from the show-runners. It was the media that blew up and made a huge deal out of it because of some stupid parents’ reaction. The whole thing was a nice detail that acknowledged the existence of gay people and made an effort to normalise queerness by showing them doing something as mundane as going to a concert with their partners. Period.

And on that note, I want to add that yes, more than this is desirable and it’s okay (it’s very important, actually!) to ask for proper representation. But we can’t close our eyes to the stuff that’s already come our way just because it’s not as much as we wanted it to be. Things take time. Society is still coming to terms with LGBT+ people, and rushing them is only gonna make them clam up and reject any notion of it. Hell, parents wanted to take Star out of Disney XD because they were outraged by a 1-sec cartoon gay kiss! Even though I’m tired of waiting, I see that Disney is treading on thin ice with its more conservative audience and has to carefully plan its every step. And they are still making progress. Slowly, but surely.

We got Beauty and the Beast with gay LeFou (even though I still think it should have been the clock and the candelabra), despite the foreseeable boicot from many people. I’m not saying “we’re good, we can stop demanding stuff from show-runners and movie directors”, I’m saying, “let’s appreciate the progress we’re making while aiming for more”. We’ve come a long way since Disney’s massive no-homo when High School Musical gave a girlfriend to Ryan, literally the gayest man alive in the Disney Universe.

And about the “unnecessary heterosexual love triangle”: I dunno, anon, I’m a storyteller and I saw it coming for a long time. The show built up to that point. It’s not like they pulled it out of their asses. Would I have wanted it to be a love square featuring Tom? Why yes, absolutely, but oh well. It still makes sense in the story they’re telling and it’s integrated in the plot. It would have been weird if Marco, who had been crushing on Jackie since Day 1, had just moved on from her without thinking twice.

Now, about Trans!Marco: I’m gonna be very honest with how I view it, and I’ll also let you know that I’m transgender myself (non-binary pal here, hey, how are ya), as well as a transgender rights activist and lecturer, so I know what I’m talking about. Yes, Marco has been shown as Princess Marco several times already, pronouns have been changed to feminine and nobody has questioned Marco’s new status during those times. However, Marco hasn’t expressed a particular preference for being treated as a girl (true, no preference for masculine treatment has been expressed either, so we’re kind of in a neutral zone I guess?). I mean, you see Marco wearing dresses and a wig with no complain, as well as being treated as a girl, but after that episode is over, you don’t really see Marco displaying any signs of discomfort with gender identity or pronouns or disphoria or gender expression or anything like that. Actually, the character’s development continues as it was before that happened (anybody else remembers that episode where Marco lives on a different dimension for 16 years and embraces every masculinity trope under the sun?).

Now I’m not saying you have to meet a bunch of requirements to be trans (I’m no trans gatekeeper), but these are the kind of things that usually give it away when we’re talking about someone else’s experience, since we are not inside their head. 

Yes, Marco does possess some traits traditionally associated with femininity (like spending hours getting ready for the date with Jackie), but they’re vague enough that they could mean something or nothing at all (like I said, the show does a lot to destroy gender roles). I feel like I can’t really call it for sure based on that. With how indifferent Marco seems to be to different pronouns, I’d actually say that there’s higher chances this character falls somewhere in the non-binary spectrum, rather than identifying as a girl. This is, of course, my personal opinion, and I might be wrong. But it goes to show that the hinting done in the show has been so subtle for now that it could go either way, and so, I fail to see why we should get angry that Marco isn’t being treated as a girl at the moment.

Burying The Child - Gen/K

History was once again repeating itself, but this time I was different; I would not make the same mistakes as I had before. I doubted I could even if I wanted to. Fate and its sick sense of humour had warped me too much for that.

“I remember when Tamlin first bought you those paints,” Lucien mused. “You sat in here all day for weeks, like a child with a new toy. It was very endearing, really.”

He sat across from me, lounging upon a daybed below a window in the gallery. His body lay splashed with sunlight, turning his hair a gorgeous shade of amber and his bronze skin, exposed by the open-necked shirt he wore, shone like clear liquid honey. One could mistake him for a god were it not for the signs of strain that recent events had carved into him, from his hollow cheeks to his nervous, restless fingers; The latter of which was really quite irksome.

“Stop fidgeting,” I quipped, frowning and biting down on the tip of my tongue. “I’ll never be able to get you right if you keep moving. Honestly, and you compare me to a child.”

“I do have a few years on you, fair lady.”

“That only makes it worse.”

Lucien managed to still himself for a rather pathetic minute before his forefinger resumed their tapping upon his thigh, but I made no comment. The back and forth bitching we’d developed when I’d first arrived at the Spring Court had now evolved beyond the antipathy and mourning we’d shared. He no longer held the death of Andras against me, and I in turn agreed not to speak of what had passed here whilst I was at the Night Court. This silent agreement meant we were both more comfortable in sharing quiet moments together, knowing neither would verbally assault the other. In a case of mutually assured destruction, we both knew the wounds such talk would inflict could scar us both.

“I can’t believe it’s only been a year since we first met,” Lucien said, his gaze fixed out the window at the surrounding gardens. “Only a year since we were all prisoners. Or, a year since we were able to admit to it aloud.”

He was breaching dangerous territory, but I’d long stopped being scared by it. It had only been two months since my return to Spring, and yet it was already apparent to me that no one save Tamlin and Ianthe thought the deal with Hybern was wise. Since the High Lord and his Priestess were out on a ride that day, I saw no harm in letting Lucien say whatever it was that was bothering him.

“Missing Amarantha, are we?”

“Oh, dreadfully,” Lucien said, playing along with a theatrical swoon. He laughed when I scolded him for shifting his position. Though I had come to see Lucien as an ally, I could never come to like his laugh. It always spoke of so much pain. “What can I say? She kept Tamlin occupied. He does so love to have an enemy.”

Finished sketching, I took up mixing up the colours I needed on the paint palette. “He’s a fool for choosing Rhysand as his new target,” I said quietly, struggling to get the right skin tone. There would be time to learn proper painting technique, if only I could survive the war. The past year had been spent fashioning me into a weapon, no time for games. Who I was had been carved into steel and fire and power, so that I was more a what than a whom to the world now. Beyond what I had briefly shared with Rhys, I had not known softness in a long time.

“If what you say about the Night Court is true, I don’t doubt it.” Lucien looked over at me, his metal eye as unnerving as ever. Still I had not dared to ask just what it allowed him to see, but I felt as if it could somehow discern the contents of my soul.

He chewed the inside of his cheek whilst I distracted myself with mixing paint, before he finally spoke, “You’ve changed so much, Feyre.” He smiled, but it did not reach his eyes. “I must admit, I’m impressed by who you have become. Even if Rhysand did not exist, I’d hate to make a foe of you. So forgive me when I say I am also in mourning.”

Cocking my head, I finally had the courage to look back at him. Did he speak of Elain now? “Mourning whom?” I asked. The smile he gave me hurt as much as the two months apart from Rhysand had. It spoke of pity, pity I could not bear.

“I am in mourning for a close friend. A friend I made under Amarantha’s rule. A human girl, who came here with childish anger, who could be made happy and placid by nothing more than paint. A girl who screamed and cried and didn’t know any better than to wander out at night on Calanmai, and who could fall in love even with a Beast.” He did not drop my gaze. “I grieve for you too, for losing her. I’m sorry you can’t be her any more.”

He’d spoken so softly, so quietly, that we both flinched when I snapped my paintbrush in half. Claws edged out of my knuckles, my grip too tight. I was still learning the depths of my new strength, though I didn’t care as anger flashed upon my tongue. “Don’t be,” I hissed, snatching a fresh brush and ramming it in the prepared paint to coat it. “She was a stupid, foolish little victim who knew no better.”

“That, fair Feyre,” Lucien said, back to looking out at the gardens, “is exactly why I mourn for you.”

The Elsewhere Child

He was supposed to take my memories when he brought me here, the seelie knight, who had been commanded to escort me home with a simple “take it away, it’s too old now and it bores me” from the noble who had kept me for the past while. I traded him my singing voice for them though, and now where once sweet music poured from my lips only hoarse and untuned notes fall out without any of the tempo or melody they had before. Now I think I made a bad trade. It might have been better, if I didn’t remember, or remembered something else entirely.

I stare at the boy next to me in the circle, I was asked to join this circle as a way to make me feel part of something, part of a circle. They call the circle a support group for abducted children. Children who were abducted and got away, that is, I don’t think there’s a support group for those currently abducted. Their abductors wouldn’t allow them to attend, I suppose. The boy is speaking about the man who touched him, speaking of the horrible way he loved that man, because he was a child, and he had to love someone. Are his memories true? Or is he like me? Did a faerie take him away, and replace the memories from Under the Hill with these tragedies? Why? Did he commit some crime? I cannot say.

I am fascinated by the girl who sits next to the girl directly across from me in the circle. She tells us to call her Angie. She wears ratty clothes, not the sort of poor chic that seems to be an underlying trend, with jackets made of patches and ribbed cloth sold at malls, but real grunge. The tears in her sleeves reveal razor scars, her hair is short, she wants to look tough, she wants people to cross the street to get away from her when they see her coming. She is not tough. She is nervous, always nervous, always afraid, though she hides it well. None of these things are too interesting to me, those things I can see anywhere, but I thought context would be important so that the fact that she’s a pathological liar would not be the only thing you knew about her.

She is a pathological liar.

Her lies fascinate me.

After group chat, I take her aside and we talk, sometimes just for a few minutes, sometimes for hours, and I watch her fabricate thousands of untruths, from tiny white ones to huge fantastical ones as bright and colorful as her life has never been. Some days, I believe everything she says and some days I question each word, trying to figure out her secret.

It’s a strange thing, I was taken before I really knew my name, and each faerie that’s kept me (I was a pet for them) called me something different. Do I even have a true name? I’ve been Jane Doe since I showed up, stumbling barefoot and confused into a police station moments after midnight (at least the knight knew to leave me near a place of authority), so I’ve been introducing myself as Roe, like the deer. They ran my DNA through the missing children’s database (I didn’t understand what that was at first, was shocked at how closely humans had approximated magic with computers), but there was no match. I told them I didn’t know how long ago I’d been abducted, and suggested that it might have been before the database was made. They laughed and said I was eighteen, and DNA technology had been around much longer than me. I tried to explain that time was different where I had been kept, but they simply patted me on my head and told me they were sure that it seemed that way to me at the time.

They stared at me worriedly when one of them brought me a McDonald’s Happy Meal, and I asked what she wanted for it. She told me nothing. No one here ever asks for anything besides courtesy in return for their food, but old habits are hard to break. Even now, in my foster home, I cannot help insisting that my hosts confirm that this food is a gift freely given. They asked me to help them cook and I broke down in tears because there was a cast iron skillet on the stove (“Please don’t make me, iron burns, iron burns, and it gets under your skin and makes you go grey and lifeless like a flower severed from its roots, plea-please, please don’t make me”). It took them an hour to convince me that they weren’t trying to force me to poison myself, and the food burned (“I said I would help you, you asked me to cook and I agreed, but, but please don’t make me, it burns, it’ll burn me!” “It’s alright darling, you don’t have to cook if you don’t want to.” “But I said I would! It was an oath!” “We’re sorry, we wouldn’t have asked if we’d known it would upset you, you can help some other way if you like.” “You… absolve me of my oath?” “Yes, of course we do darling!”).

I am more comfortable with iron now, I am not one of the Fair Folk, after all, it will not harm me. Correction, a blade of iron would harm me, but not because it was made of iron. It does, however, mess with my glamor.

It is a difficult thing, growing up bathed in magic and yet to have none of your own. A pixie once spoke of how she envied my hair, and I said, on impulse, “do you want it?” So a trade was made. She gave me the ability to change my appearance, and she walked away with my hair. I expected my hair to grow back after a time though… it did not. With my glamor I can have the appearance of having whatever hair I please, and sometimes I change it daily, but when I sleep or when iron is near my bare head is revealed. It is assumed by my hosts and everyone around me that I have many wigs, I have told them I do not, but they don’t believe in magic, so they insist on believing this instead.

I hide when I hear thunder, duck into a bathroom and put everything on backward and inside out if I’m in public, or simply sit quiet if I’m home. The first time I did this, it shook me to my core when someone told me “You know, your shirt is on backward.” I started to panic, until I realized that I could see myself too. It was a revelation, discovering that there was something humans could see that the Good Neighbors couldn’t.

It still boggles my mind how much people throw away, tears and menstrual blood caught on napkins, or gifts from that one aunt that they held onto for so long for the sentimental value but can’t keep now because they have to move into a smaller apartment, or the shirt they can’t wear anymore because it smells like their ex. They could trade these items to faeries for so many things, and yet they simply throw them away. What a waste.

My hosts insisted I should have a proper education, and after three years of homeschooling (to get me caught up) I applied to attend the local state college. There I found more people who fascinate me the way Angie does. There’s Lisa, who fights for animal rights, and Kyle, the leader of the Gay Straight Alliance group, and Riley, who’s going into the Peace Corps next year because they want to help the world. I ask them all the time why they do what they do, what they expect to get back, and they tell me that ideally they’ll make the world a better place, and that will pay them back eventually, but that they don’t do it for what they’ll get back, they do it because it’s right. I don’t understand. There’s Cheyenne, who always gets into intense political debates with other people over dinner in the cafeteria, and she believes so intensely about things that don’t even affect her, and she fights for them, and she tells me she does this because it’s right, and I don’t understand. I’ve never met anyone who cared about anything other than themselves Under the Hill. Faeries can’t lie, they can’t go back on their word, they honor their deals and make sure you honor them too, they repay debts and ensure they’re repaid in turn, they amuse themselves playing or squabbling over power, but they do not do things for free. They don’t care about things for free. They don’t defend the innocent, protect the weak, or forgive the ignorant. The culture shock coming here is bewildering.

If I could I’d honor my debts, leave a pile of gold at the doorstep of everyone who’s done me a kindness, but I have not the magic to do so. The drainage ponds hold no sirens, the falling snow has no frolicking pixies between its flakes, there is no magic for me to use here… or is there?

Perhaps I can’t call upon the magic Under the Hill, perhaps I can’t summon gold or make deals with darklings, but I can find magic here, I’ve seen others do it. I’ve seen a moon so beautiful it sends shivers down your spine captured by a little lense-box and put onto thick shiny paper. I’ve seen songs and stories written with such emotion that it moves those who hear them to tears, to laughter, to dancing, to life. I’ve seen kitchen witches cure colds with hot chicken soup, and I’ve seen holy men ward off tricksters they can’t even see with the power of their belief.

Perhaps I can find a way to create my own magic, and do what other people seem to strive to do to repay their debts. Perhaps I can make the world a better place, and learn the magic of humanity. And as for the places where magic does live? Where the boundary between worlds is thin and the drainage ponds and snowflakes carry faerie magic within? …I think I’ll be staying far away, for my part. I might still have a lot to learn, but I think I like it better here.

He promises himself that it’ll only be a quick  look, a brisk moment to catch a fleeting glimpse of you to reassure himself that he had made the right decision. That you were indeed- happier.

He reckons that his current predicament makes him look like a proper stalker, laying low against the seat of his car with his hoodie pulled up around his head. He’s pushed the pair of sunglasses that usually serve as a makeshift headband onto his face, and his lips are in a tight pressed line. He’s parked and turned the car off long ago, and it’s starting to get chilly. His fingers drum nervously against the steering wheel, cold metal of his rings making small thumping sounds against it. His eyes pull away from across the street to glance down at his phone, ignoring the growing list of notifications to glance at the time. 5 minutes.

He’s hoping to god, for once, that there aren’t any nosy camera lenses hidden across the street or in some odd crevice because shots of this in the tabloids would not only be hard to explain, but embarrassing for you too. He’d dated you for so long that the public was well aware of who you were and where you worked. He’s kept his head low, though, and with the lack of his driver and the shield of tinted windows- he hopes it’ll be enough.

3 minutes now.  He twists the ring on his index finger nervously, licking his lips and glancing at the door to the building that his car has stood in front of so many times. He thinks, reflectively, that he could’ve asked Gem how you were doing. His brows furrow together at the thought of his older sister giving him that all knowing look, the one where she makes an indignant noise at him and calls him a martyr under her breath. He can practically imagine her ignorance of his simple question and her storm of counter ones, all stemming from the same basic thought, of course. Why on earth did he you let her go in the first place?

To which he would have to give a plethora of mumbles to defend why he made the decision he did. It was something he was far too exhausted to even think about, and he shakes his head at the idea of delving into it before glancing out the window again. He jolts up straighter in his seat and squints through the window, pulling his glasses off and staring. You’ve got your bag clutched to your side and your other hand is shading your eyes. You’re leaning up onto the tips of your toes and rocking back down to balls of your feet as you glance up and down the street expectantly.

Harry swallows harshly, curious eyes taking you in. You’re wearing one of his favorite work outfits on you, but somehow you look different. He hasn’t seen you in sometime, a few months now, and he wonders if his eyes ever did you the justice you deserve. You’re beautiful, and perhaps it’s the passing of time that is throwing him off but he swears- he’s never seen anything more angelic. The sun is out in London today, peeking out to say a dutiful hello to the city and its dwellers. He watches as you tip your head back slightly, letting the sun shine onto your face with closed eyes and a appreciative smile. It sends his heart thumping into overdrive, it’s what he wanted- the purpose of this expedition fulfilled. To see just a glimpse of your radiant smile that he’s missed so much. He sighs, grabbing the key in the ignition and giving it a twist. He buckles up and glances back once more at you, but this time you’re not alone.

Keith and Shiro Discover the Secrets of the Universe

(alternatively, how sheith could happen, especially despite the ‘brother’ line)

so after finishing aristotle & dante discover the secrets of the universe, i found myself thinking hardcore about sheith (of course) and basically, i feel like the way ari processes his feelings throughout the book is a feasible way keith might fall in love with shiro. and thus, i decided to make a little post about all the soft and tender feelings of how i could see sheith falling in love. ❤️

(very very minor spoilers of a&ddtsotu ahead. mostly just a mention / the vibes from the book are sprinkled throughout)

imagine this:

  • keith does see shiro as a brother for most of the time he’s known him because shiro’s the closest thing to a family he’s ever known. so from the beginning, when they get closer, keith’s just like “perhaps this is what family feels like :)” – at first.
  • because keith has his family background mystery hanging over him and possible abandonment from his father (kind of like ari’s brother situation from the book), those things occupy a lot of space in his life and take precedence, and since they’ve occupied that space for so long, he doesn’t intentionally make a lot of room for processing other big things/feelings. wondering about his family is a cloud that’s constantly over him.
  • at some point he meets shiro, and of course, as they build trust/closeness, he’s attached to him. they’re attached to each other.
  • meanwhile, shiro starts falling for him, especially because he admires so much in keith.
  • i can just imagine shiro telling keith a similar line from the book “you’re not afraid of anything” and that being one of the reasons he likes this boy so much
  • but he doesn’t tell keith how he really feels at all because he knows that (1) keith is way more preoccupied with his family origins, so he doesn’t want to put that burden on him, and (2) keith sees shiro as the only family he knows, and he wouldn’t want to ruin that for keith or make it weird because he would have no one else to fall back on. he’d rather just be a supportive friend first and foremost.
  • so he falls for keith quietly and sweeps it under the rug like he always does with any emotions that may be harmful to someone else
  • even before he leaves for kerberos, he wants to tell him so badly, but just doesn’t. they hug instead and he hopes to see him soon.
  • then, when he’s back from kerberos, a little later than planned and a little worse for wear, shiro has seen SHIT™. so now shiro also has way too much on his plate that needs to take precedence over any personal feelings/desires.
  • they go through the rest of s1 and beginning of s2 this way.
  • then comes that moment when keith says “you’re like a brother to me.” it makes sense, it’s not even new. shiro is pained but he understands. he’s known this forever now. he gets the BOM off his back and runs to him anyways when red starts attacking.
  • but, now that keith has shed some light on his family history, there’s less stuff in the way of his feelings, except maybe his own uncertainty / possible denial
  • so when shiro disappears this time, he has a bit more space in his heart to give these uncertain feelings the proper thought and examination
  • also, maybe he even has a convo with hunk, who’s just like “dude. have you seen the way you look at him? i’m surprised you didn’t know? i thought it was obvious” or something
  • in shiro’s absence, keith figures it out. he’s got the basics of his family history out of the way, he’s made some friends other than shiro who have become family to him, the definition of family has already changed and is continuing to change for him
  • with all this reexamination, it makes sense now. he’s loved shiro this whole time but because of a mix of not understanding it fully and being afraid of the idea of ACTUALLY being in love with shiro, hadn’t come to fully accept it until now.
  • THEN, when they reunite, he finally tells shiro, “you used to say i’m not afraid of anything. but i am afraid of something. you.” because he had no idea how to handle the idea that he might’ve been in love with shiro this entire time
  • shiro just chuckles and says, “about time,” and cupping his hand around the back of keith’s head, pulls him in for a kiss

HOLY SHIT

THE FROG.

THIS FUCKING FROG.

I just realised what it is and what it DOES. So ever since this panel happened, it’s been on the back of my mind, and now that the comic is over and I’ve done theories on the Metastuck and found the Apotheosis and Creation Myth theory which is to me the perfect explanation of all things Homestuck, THIS fucking thing still held the one plot thread I couldn’t explain with Alternate timelines, and that seemed a bit too Deus Ex Machina for me to actually enjoy much. “Oh, the last frog? Echidna just helped me remember it was not in the Medium! It was back at my island!” Why. Why would it be back at her island?

And yesterday when I talked to a friend about the ending, I realised. It’s Game Design. Now hear me, I quote from the comic itself:

PCG: WHAT.
?GG: oh right
?GG: where the last frog is!
?GG: or was…
?GG: the thing is
?GG: the frog we need is nowhere to be found in the medium
?GG: it was on earth!
?GG: but only very briefly
?GG: it was when i was young
?GG: before i woke up on prospit
?GG: i had begun sleep walking

?GG: both on the island and on the moon
?GG: and in my dream it was very bright
?GG: i saw something in the light
?GG: i couldnt tell what it was so i got closer

?GG: later my grandpa made a robot for me to help me with my sleep walking
?GG: it could do all the walking while i stayed safe in bed!

That’s it. the hint has been there all along. This was when Jade started sleepwalking, and that is not just a coincidence. This is the thing that caused the Sleepwalking in the first place. The ‘Seed’ shape glowing in the middle of Prospit, that bright light, has always symbolised a Game Construct, something the game does. Be it the place from which the Temple emerges, the lily time capsule storing people and items within, that’s the main symbol of SBURB that says it’s a mechanic of the game. Now, to explain this I have to take Kanaya, the other Space Player, as an example:

Of course, one could argue it was Bec who allowed Jade to wake up in Prospit, but she spent her entire life with her dog, and it was only after the Frog Event and Jadebot’s construction that she actually woke up there. So everything hints to the fact that the Final Frog is the Trigger that wakes up Space Players in Prospit. Kanaya didn’t need it, because Doc Scratch woke her up. Doc Scratch manipulated others to his whims, so the fact he only visited her a few times and then disappears means he had little interest in what he could get from Kanaya. Which bid the question to me, what did he want from her in such short time?

The Frog is what he wanted. He zapped himself on Alternia, and woke Kanaya up, thus making sure she didn’t wake up the proper way. He became the trigger of her awakening, making it so that Kanaya never saw this Final Frog in the past, and didn’t remember in the future, causing the Universe to be incomplete, cancerous.

In a normal SBURB Session, SBURB will ensure retroactively the Last Frog needed is sent to the past, near the Space Player, as a means of making them interact with a Game Construct and wake up in Prospit. Getting the Final Frog to make the Universe adds the need to search through Time as well as through Space. Doc Scratch preemptively woke Kanaya up in Prospit, saying he was her Guardian, with the explicit purpose of sabotaging the creation of a healthy Frog, and causing a chain reaction that ended in the combined Session that spawned a new Universe Frog, from which Lord English himself would be born.

Me, pushing up my sleeves and brandishing my national arts seal in creative writing and creative writing degree w/ art minor: *inhales*

While Steven lying about being Rose Quartz at the end of “I Am My Mom” isn’t inherently a bad idea and works well in theory, the fact that such a proclamation comes so close on the heels of “Lion 4: Alternate Ending”–which needlessly establishes yet again that Steven is supposed to be himself and follow the beat of his own drum–undermines the morals of both episodes, causing a far reduced impact in him sacrificing himself.

As Steven Universe is now, for some reason, almost exclusively being shown to its audience via random spurts of 5-day single episode releases, we are forced to examine these packages of new episodes as one whole arc–of emotional, physical, internal conflicts that are supposed to mesh into one, cohesive resolution.

And the emotional conflict that begins in “Lion 4: Alternate Ending” does not mesh with the resolution presented to us in “I Am My Mom.” Perhaps the biggest reason as to why it does not mesh is because “Lion 4″ is otherwise self-contained. If they had released the episode in season 2, or in season 3 before “Bismuth,” “Lion 4″ would have had the proper impact as a means of reassuring Steven that Rose did indeed mean for him to be himself, which was already established in “Lion 3: Straight to Video” and had also been a subplot that was becoming more and more prominent with the introduction of Jasper, a Homeworld gem who refused to acknowledge that Steven could be any other being besides Rose Quartz.

However, the majority of this subplot is resolved in “Bismuth,” an episode wherein a Crystal Gem from the War era who was betrayed by and unjustly placed into a solitary confinement-esque prison by Rose Quartz is unbubbled. In the first half of the episode, Bismuth learns that Rose is gone, and that Steven is not a new regeneration, but a whole new being. She praises him, continuously assures him that he is not his mother, and puts her trust in him. Even right before she is poofed and unjustly placed in an equivalent to jail again, she reaffirms that, despite her earlier confusion, Steven is not anything like Rose Quartz. More reparations were necessary in order to fully put his subplot to rest (i.e. Steven and the Gems should have sat down and talked to each other and to Steven about where he stands in the world of the Crystal Gems, and finally affirm that they had been treating him like Rose, but that they cannot do that because even if he acts similarly, Steven is not Rose), however, there is no reason this subplot should have extended past season 3. It is old, tired, and the resolution was predictable even when the conflict was new. However, it is now being trotted out as if it is still a major, untired conflict in the show, taking precious time away from focusing on Garnet’s or Amethyst’s subplots that have largely been abandoned.

This relocation of “Lion 4″ would not have solved the major problem of the episode itself–that, being, that nothing happens in it that the audience has not already seen–and the episode would have been better off not made. But if the crew decided that they absolutely needed “Lion 4″ as an episode, then it should have occurred during the period of time when several characters were insisting that he was Rose Quartz, and begrudged him for supposedly being Rose Quartz.

Which brings us to the episode “I Am My Mom.” As I stated before, Steven lying to save his friends works well in theory, but it falls flat in practice as the climax of Steven Bomb 6. Since the writers did not trust the audience to truly believe that Steven had resolved his “Am I my mother?” conflict already, and since “Lion 4″ sets up the conflict again, the tension of Steven’s relationship to his mother is an overarching dramatic tension of this series of episodes. But at the end, Steven does not come to a conclusion about whether he is his mother or not, but he comes to the conclusion that in order to save his friends, he has to lie about something he has already allegedly resolved. But, again, the largest portion of the emotional arc was resolved between seasons 2 and 3. Bringing it up so suddenly again brings it back into focus for the audience, and packaging it with these episodes enforces the fact that “Am I my mother?” is still relevant, even though it’s not.

And since the theme was brought back from the dead, placed in front of a bunch of episodes, and given gravitas, it is uncertain, again, if Steven truly believes that he is not Rose Quartz. After all, why would he still be looking for hidden messages of his purpose in that video if he truly believed he only had to be himself? In the end, his proclamation of being Rose Quartz–intended to be a lie coming from the mouth of someone who no longer worried about the validity of the statement–is completely undermined because we can no longer be sure that Steven’s personal conflict is resolved. Because “Lion 4″ resurrected the theme, it became an undercurrent for the next few episodes, culminating in Steven’s character regressing due to complete mishandling by the creators. The arc is no longer about Steven taking direct action in a war, but about Steven’s conflict of whether or not he is who he thinks he is.

It is a good idea in theory; it is a terrible idea in execution.

But why go on so long about a “simple kids’ show?” Why bother thinking so much into this? First of all, because so many people have been affected by this show, had their lives changed by this show, that it is unfair to call it “just a–” anything. If you accept that a show can positively impact you, if you crow about how it is “progressive” and has “great representation” then it is no longer simple and forgettable. You have admitted that it is worth close examination.

Second of all, if you believe that there are things unworthy of serious academic examination, extrapolation, and criticism, then you have no actual idea what academic criticism is and why it is important.

My New Henry Big Boy in .357 mag/.38 Special

About a month and a half ago I used my tax refund to buy this beautiful new lever action rifle. The Henry Big Boy is a lever action produced by Henry Repeating Arms Co., one of their many lever action products. Mine is chambered in .357 magnum, many of their rifles are chambered in pistol caliber cartridges, hearkening back to the days of the Old West when Winchester lever actions were chambered in cowboy pistol cartridges such as .44-40 and .45 Colt. The Henry Big Boy comes in .357, .44 mag, and .45 colt. Since mine is .357, it can also feed and chamber .38 special as well.  I bought this possibly as a short range hunting rifle, something to use when I don’t feel like using my flintlock.  Plus, since it can fire .38 special, it is a very economical plinking gun.  .357 is a fairly powerful pistol cartridge, but from a rifle it sports some very impressive ballistics, and it’s certainly good enough to take medium sized game at short ranges.

The most notable feature of the Big Boy is its brass frame. They also offer the same model with an iron frame, a checkered stock, and rubber butt pad. I considered buying that one because it would probably be more practical as a rifle to lug through thick woods. However the lovely gleam of it’s brass frame, brass butt plate, and brass barrel bands was too much to resist.  It will probably get scratched, oh well, it was worth it. The rifle features a neat hexagon barrel, adding to its nostalgic old timey look and giving you the feeling that you are handling an old fashioned cowboy gun. It features a ten round fixed magazine, which is loaded through a loading port at the end of the barrel.  To load the magazine port must be twisted and magazine rod removed. Then you insert the cartridges one at a time, then re-insert the magazine rod.

When I first bought this rifle the magazine rod was very hard to twist and operate.  However the more and more I work it, the more its wearing in and its becoming progressively easier.

Often the Henry Golden Boy and Big Boy is mistaken as a replica of the American Civil War era Henry M1860 lever action rifle. However this is not true. Rather, the Big Boy is almost like a hybrid of a Henry rifle, a Winchester Model 1866, and a Marlin Model 336.  It has the loading port system and tube magazine of the Henry, the forearm and brass frame of a Winchester M1866, and a Marlin action.  Regardless you still get this feeling of handling and firing an antique cowboy lever gun, a must for my tastes. The sights are simple, featuring and adjustable ramp rear sight and a front post sight.

Another feature I must mention is a transfer bar, which means you can have the hammer uncocked and down on a round without risk of accidental discharge, which is probably the most important modern feature on a rifle with design elements dating to the 19th century.

With .357 the action is very smooth and operates without any problem.  I did some plinking with both .357 and .38 special.  I purchased some cheap bottom shelf ammo not thinking about the possibility of feeding issues. Problem is I bought this really cheap .38 special ammo that used lacquered steel casings, and ejection was certainly is issue. I later bought some better quality .38 special with brass casings and found they fed with far less issues, though the action isn’t as smooth as with .357 and you kind of have to work the lever harder and faster to ensure proper feeding and ejection. The recoil is very light, even firing .357 magnum. Recoil wise I would compare it to 7.62x39.  So it will definitely save your shoulder despite the brass buttplate.

At first I just did some simple close range plinking at steel swivel targets at 25 yards.  The rifle hits right on at that range and it certainly is a fun plinker.  Then I took it to the 100 yard range to see what I can do. I must admit I had a bit of a handicap shooting, I work night shift and it was a particularly bright day. So my eyes were very sensitive to light and my vision a bit blurry. I think I’m turning into a vampire. 

I was shooting from a bench rest with open sights, using Fiocchi .357 magnum ammo with 142 grain bullets.  I was firing three rounds groups.  First I tested it at 50 yards. At 50 yards the target and visible and well defined. Note that each increment on the grid is one inch.

The first group shot to the right and high aiming at the bull. I decided to play with the adjustable ramp sight, lowering it one increment.  The result was the 2nd group, which shot low.  Thus I reset the sight and adjusted but aiming low, and to the left, resulting in the third group. At 50 yards it shoots on average 1-2 inch groupings.

I then continued by shooting at 100 yards.  At 100 yards the front sight completely covers the bullseye and black portion of the target.

Despite increasing range to 100 yards it still shot high, in fact it shot much higher than at 50 yards. The first grouping I was aiming right for the bull, resulting again in a high group, with one shot completely off the target. I can only assume know that the .357 magnum’s ballistic arc from this rifle is much more considerable than I had previously imagined.  Thus I adjust the the ramp sight down one increment. Like at 50 yards it then shot too low (2nd group). So I reset the sight and decided to aim low, resulting in the third group. At 100 yards it shoots around 2-3 inch groupings on average.

In my final test, I went back to 50 yards. This time I was not using the bench rest, instead firing off hand.  Nor was I taking time with my shots.  Basically the scenario was that I am the sheriff of a western town and some outlaws are up to no good and I have to deal with them.  So I was shooting as quickly as possible while keeping rounds on target.  This was the result.

Now I must say this is no tack driver, nor is it a long range rifle, and I bought it with that expectation. Ballistics data using a 140 grain bullet show that it has a drop of -.2 inches at 100 yards and -5 inches at 150 yards.  So 100 yards is probably the edge of its optimum range. Mine seems to shoot high, but I still would not go beyond 100 yards.  That is fine to me since where I traditionally hunt it is thick woods and there is rarely any continuous ground more than 75 yards. With a scope you could probably get much better range and accuracy out of it. I imagine that if I was using much better quality ammunition with hotter loads, say +P or buffalo bore ammunition, the groupings would tighten considerably at 100 yards and the adjustable sites will be much more useful.  I shall try that some time in the future and post the results.

My final comments on the Henry Big Boy had to do with its quality. Originally I wanted to buy a Rossi Circuit Judge in .410/.45 long colt, most because of the allure of a revolving rifle.  However, I had seen many complaints about the quality of it and manufacturing flaws. Plus it carried the Taurus name (Rossi is owned by Taurus), a Brazilian company which has a reputation for iffy quality control.  So I decided to ditch the Circuit Judge. I also looked at the Ross M1892 lever action rifle, also in .357/38 and also made by Taurus.  It was $300 cheaper (the Henry cost $730), but when I saw it in person I was not impressed.  The metal work was OK, as was the metal finish, done satisfactorily but nothing thrilling.  However the wood and wood finish looked bad, as if it had been done by either child labor, a drunk, or someone who just didn’t really care about what they were doing.  It was really off putting.  The Henry looks like a rifle of unparalleled quality at first glance. It looks like someone made them with an eye for detail and with uncompromising quality in mind. I also own a Henry lever action in .22LR as well, although with a steel frame, and I can say the same for it.  When the sales person took it out of the box I immediately blurted “holy shit, that’s a beautiful rifIe.” I can’t stress the quality of workmanship that goes into Henry rifles, they are more than just firearms, they are works of art.  They are the only metallic cartridge firearms I own and I have no plans nor feel the need to buy any other modern firearms again. Instead I want to focus my collection on antique muzzleloaders or replicas of antique muzzleloaders.  So for me the quality of the Henry trumps all else, its a rifle you can own for a lifetime and can be passed down from generation to generation.

You sat curled up in the large armchair in the corner of your room, legs draped over the side and a mug of cold tea balanced haphazardly on the windowsill beside you.

The weather had been getting better recently and with the sun finally out (but the cold still present) you had decided to spend your morning laying in the sunshine with one of your favourite books. Hours went by without your noticing, much too absorbed in your book and the new CD Sam had bought you playing in the background to care.

But by noon, your stomach was rumbling and so you stood, making your way over to your dresser and pulling out a cliff bar. Tony had scolded you many times before for keeping food in your room but you honestly couldn’t care less; sometimes it was just too much of a hassle to leave in search of food.

Letting yourself fall back into your seat, you opened your snack and watched the clouds go by. You were zoning out again which wasn’t hard to do in this weather and the comfort of your room.

A few minutes later though a knock on the door distracted you and, throwing the now empty wrapper in the trash, you walked over to let Sam in.

Yondu Udonta liked to see your performances when he could. It wasn’t often, but every time he did appear, you were glad. It meant he was still alive and still safe. No one knew, but every time you saw that Centurian in the crowd, your performances would be particularly phenomenal that evening.

You liked to joke and tell him that he was your lucky charm and that he should visit more often, but the both of you knew it was just a half-hearted ploy for him to see you more because anytime he was at your side, he was safe. Anytime he was away was another chance for him to be gone forever.

It was indeed amusing, because all of Esther’s worries revolved around what he would become if he possessed his Hybrid powers. What kind of evil the blond would turn out to be. Yet, she did not considered the fact she was the one to blame. She made him. She sentenced a poor boy to a painful childhood just to hide her mistake.

A bitter chuckle left his lips. Yes, killing her was an act of mercy, for the witch deserved way more than a quick death.

art theft in the phandom

This morning I woke up to several panicked messages from friends letting me know that somebody had tweeted a drawing of mine, claimed that it was their own, and that Phil had ‘liked’ this stolen artwork on twitter:

This person not only had the gall to upload it and suggest that they’d made it, but they also criticised the way I had drawn his face and then accepted compliments from other people, as seen in this screenshot:

This drawing means a lot to me. Ready Player One has been my favourite novel for four years now, and I was thrilled when Phil first mentioned it in one of his liveshows. It’s not a particularly well-known book, and it made me so happy to hear that Phil also enjoyed it.

I spent nine hours on that drawing. Nine hours hunched over that damn graphics tablet with a cramping hand and shoulders. I constantly redrew the pose even though I suck at anatomy because I wanted it to be perfect. I worked right into the early hours of the morning because I didn’t want to stop. I was so excited. I knew that Phil would enjoy this drawing.

The only other time I’ve been noticed by Dan or Phil was in 2015, when I tweeted another artwork at Phil. He ‘liked’ it and I almost had a heart attack.  It was an incredible feeling and I wanted to feel that again.
Everybody here knows how difficult it is to be noticed by Dan and Phil. Most people never get it. I was certain that this artwork would be recognised, and I was correct. It just wasn’t in the way that I wanted it to be.

The art thief deleted the tweet after being called out (they haven’t apologised or answered any of my messages yet), and I’ve posted my drawing again in an attempt to have it rightfully credited to me. Despite my best efforts, I doubt that Phil will see it again, or, if he does, I don’t know whether he’ll act. The pride and accomplishment that I felt after completing this drawing has been marred by this shitty, talentless person with low self-esteem and weak ethics. And what happened to me isn’t an isolated incident.

Take, for example, @phantheraglama and @maddox-rider’s constant struggle with people who repost their art. Or when @arctoids and @incaseyouart discovered that their work was traced and used in Dan’s The Urge video. I was there when @pinofs found themselves in a situation similar to mine, when Dan liked a tweet from someone who traced their drawing. 

It’s not limited to ‘art’ artists either. Some of my friends, @phansdick, @insanityplaysfics and @crescendohowell have their incredible phanfiction reposted constantly. @moaninghowell, @themostfuniveverhad and @moonlitdan’s edits have been stolen and posted, too. And this isn’t everyone. These are only the people I’m aware of, and the ones who are lucky enough to have had their plight seen by others. There are many, many other artists who don’t have enough followers to be noticed, or who never get the recognition they deserve because the thief has more followers than they do, and anything they say is overshadowed by that.

After scouring through copyright and code of conduct laws for various social media, I’ve learnt that unfortunately there is nothing you can really do except report the problem and hope that staff are able to delete the offending post. Since most phan artists don’t actually legally buy a copyright, we are completely reliant on the decency of others to prevent art theft from occurring. Most of the phandom is great and works to support artists, but unfortunately, the bad eclipses the good. The ‘good’ majority is irrelevant when there are ‘bad’ people out there, doing bad things.

So how do you stop this from happening? You can’t. There are, however, ways to make it harder for people to actually steal your art, a lesson I wish I had taken to heart before this happened.

1. Put your watermark in a noticeable place and make it your username, not your actual name. Write it somewhere that has a distinctive pattern or colours that are hard to replicate so that nobody can brush over it easily.

2. Specify in your caption what you’d like done with your art. Every artist is different – some are okay with people reposting their art with credit, others aren’t. Make sure you tell people what you want, as many people repost things with the good intention of getting it more recognition. 

3. If all else (including nicely messaging them) fails, report the shit out of the person.

And to anyone who has ever stolen art, know this: Your way of getting recognised by Dan and Phil is crap. Any reblog, like, note or compliment that you get is OURS. None of that goodness is directed to you. You have done nothing but shit on the hard work and achievements of other people. You’re the scum of the phandom.

I think that Vic, from @incaseyouart, phrased it really well: It takes many years to develop a fine skill such as drawing, because to learn is to develop your style by referencing other artists and material. Tracing and reposting someone’s image, and other forms of art theft, are cheap ways of reproducing art. It is plagiarism of great effort. Not only does it steal from the original artist’s feelings of accomplishment and pride over their creation, it also discourages proper skill development. Do not repost, create. Do not steal, learn.

I hope that we can start up a discussion about art theft again. I really don’t want anyone else to go through this stressful and disheartening experience.


Update: The person has apologised and seems to regret what they’ve done. Phil also liked my post on Twitter again! Thanks to everyone who helped, and Phil for seeing the issue and fixing it :) Even though this was a win for me, unfortunately art theft is still a huge issue. Let’s not forget that.
