Hi! First off I want to tell you that I LOVE your writing style, it's simply amazing and one can tell how well you know your characters. And your plots are extremely unique and interesting to read. Um that aside I'm writing this one Tobio centric KageHina story. I'd really like your opinion on something. Do you think Tobio respects his elders? Because he's pretty respectful to his senpai and stuff, but he was just very impolite to his coach back at KitaIchi and it seems contradictory. Thoughts?

Hi!! Thank you so much for these kind words <3 So sorry I did not respond to this sooner – hopefully this is still in time to assist!

This is an interesting question, because there are some clear contradictions in his behavior! But I think the most important thing to remember when discussing Kageyama’s character is the concept of “Then vs Now.”

Short answer: Yes, I think Tobio respects his elders in the same way he respects his senpai!

Long explanation: I think, overall, Tobio actually seems to be a pretty polite, respectful kid by default. I’ve noted this in a couple other places, but it seems his lack of understanding of social cues is what leads to him coming off as brash, or too blunt, or unconcerned, when in actuality, that is him trying to be polite. It’s just that he may not realize that staring blankly and giving abrupt, frank answers comes off as awkward or even rude to many people.

But in addition to this, he seems to be/always has been of the mindset that “if I believe something, I should speak up about it!!!” And when results aren’t satisfactory, his solution is to get louder, dig his heels in. I think the scene you are referring to with his middle school coach is (maybe? in the game against Yukigaoka) when the man is telling him he needs to be more mindful of his teammates and Kageyama just totally brushes the guy off, quite rudely. He’s currently completely in “I am obviously right about my team needing to take this tiny tangerine seriously, why isn’t anybody listening to me???” mode.

And when he gets that way, he is rude to people, regardless of who they are or whether or not he is respectful to them normally. I don’t think this means he has lost any respect for them; he just doesn’t know how to regulate the way he speaks or expresses himself very well. We see this in the “king returns” chapter, when he shouts at Noya and Asahi (both of whom he clearly looks up to) over mistakes they make in a practice game.

The difference is that back then (Kitagawa) he didn’t view this as a mistake on his part. Now, at Karasuno, he realizes that it is not acceptable for him to react in such a manner. He has made an effort to change himself, and he now has input from a lot of people who see his mistakes for what they are: mistakes, not personality defining traits. So while they will speak up and tell him when he’s out of line, they do so to help him better himself, because that’s what Tobio wants.

So, I think the level of respect he displays at any given moment depends both on the situation and where in the story line the event falls. But I do think he is respectful in general, whether he’s talking to his peers, his senpai, or adults/elders (look at how much he seeks out both the Ukais’ input, and values and contemplates every word). And he’s trying to get better at his lapses in respectfulness, as well.

I’m 100% sure Viktor asks Yuuri more than once if he’d want to continue training in bed while being at the rink in St. Petersburg 8)
