Iz Explains Stuff So You Don’t Have to: The Nightwing Debacle.

Hey guys! As promised, here’s a write up of what’s currently making waves in the DC/comic fandom today. Given that this subject somewhat related to the Hydra-cap nonsense, I thought it should be something I cover as well, just to sorta give non-comics fans/DC comics readers who might see this and want some context.

1. Who is Nightwing?

You guys know Robin, Batman’s sidekick who they almost always leave out of movies? This is the first (yes there’s more than one, but that’s a topic for another day) and possibly most iconic one to pop-culture. Named Richard “Dick” Grayson, Dick is the son of the flying Grayson’s , two circus acrobats who died due to mob interference during a show (he also has Romani heritage (which the comics often ignore) This will be important later). Bruce took Dick in and the rest is well history.

Dick probably has the most screen time over any Robin in film/tv adaptations, including Teen Titans, Young Justice, The Lego Batman movie, the original Adam West series, and Batman Forever. He’s arguably the best known Robin to non-comic’s readers.

Because time does pass in comics occasionally, Dick grew up and after a series of events that have been retconned so many times it’s not worth getting into, ditched the Robin mantle. He would later take up the title of Nightwing.

2. Why the name Nightwing?

Dick is a HUGE fan of Superman (no really, Superman is pretty much his uncle) and after he ditched the Robin title, Superman and him had a talk where Superman told him of two legendary kryptonian heroes Nightwing and Flamebird. Inspired by the story, Dick would take on the name of the former (the latter name has a much more varied history).

3. Okay, so what’s the big deal besides the Robin thing?

To compress a lot of history into a paragraph, Nightwing is the one DC hero that like almost every other DC hero trusts and likes. Most of the Justice League has known Dick since he was a little kid and trust him implicitly for both his general good nature and reputation of being like, a really fucking good guy. Like a really good guy. A good enough guy that when Batman was told to let his own world die to let a better more “ideal” world survive, he asked if Richard Grayson was in it to make his choice on if it actually was a better world. (Dick was not in this world, which made Batman hard pass on that shit. Really. This is a thing that happened.)

Dick has also led multiple successful superhero teams, worked on the league himself, and donned the Batman title for awhile.

4. Okay, got it. So what’s going on?

Today DC announced a new six issue limited series in an elseworld (which is a world that takes place outside of canon. Think an AU.) This is the summary:

NIGHTWING: THE NEW ORDER is the story of a future world without “weapons”—where superpowers have been eliminated and outlawed. The man responsible? None other than Dick Grayson, a.k.a. Nightwing, now leader of a government task force called the Crusaders who are charged with hunting the remaining Supers. But when events transpire which turn the Crusaders’ aim toward Grayson’s own family, the former Boy Wonder must turn against the very system he helped create, with help from the very people he’s been hunting for years—the last metahumans of the DC Universe.

5. OH NO IS THIS HYDRA CAP ALL OVER AGAIN?

Yes and no. So far, it’s safe to say that this series does echo Hydra Cap in a paragon for good and justice becoming the figurehead of a fascist regime. However, everything else is kind of more murky.

For one, this series is an elseworld, which means unlike Hydra Cap, it doesn’t take place in the regular DC universe. This is not the fate of the Dick Grayson we know and love, nor is it him; it’s a version of him in a different universe. It’s also a limited run, so we got an enddate on this sucker off the bat.

Second, this is more general fascism instead of nazi brand fascism. The first cover echoes other fascist/oppressive regimes but it applies to multiple besides the Nazi party. In the DC universe, metahumans aren’t coded as a minority group (though smaller subsets are, like the Superfamily being coded Jewish), so it’s more sci-fi than an allegory for real life oppression (though if depending on the details of this event, that remains to be seen. The writer took to Twitter to state there is absolutely no genocide here in this book but the first few pages imply otherwise and long story short, I’m not convinced). The group Dick works with is also entirely new and unlike Hydra has no link in history to the Nazi party, making the claim that they’re a general “evil fascist villain” hold water.

Third, unlike Hydra Cap, this book is branded as Dick learning the error of his choices rather than a long saga to try to convince us he has a point. I doubt we’ll see the same extent of “we should feel bad for Dick oppressing all these people” that we see in Hydra cap. However, this also remains to be seen. Long story short, it’s never gonna try to get us to root for the bad guy.

6. So it’s fine?

Now I wouldn’t say that. Making an iconic character a fascist is still something to side eye, and a lot of my above caveats can change if the story itself decides to make those connections (i.e if there are prison camps for example). It’s also important to note, that making a Romani character a fascist, and one under the label of “crusader” is in terrible taste, considering the Romani people’s history with both.

The writer is also someone I don’t have a ton of faith in when it comes to nuance. (though to his credit, he is assuring and validating concerns on twitter rather than laughing us all off as SJWs).

What I’m saying is that it’s gonna be hard to figure out exactly this is going to play out until I see the first issue. I think the storyline and the advertising is something we should be critical of, but a lot still depends on how the book approaches it. This isn’t to say you should “give it a chance” only that we might want to hold off from saying DC is promoting fascism until we see if they’re gonna take this from a “feel bad for Dick angle, not all fascists are bad” or a “Dick fucked up hard” angle. We can just say this storyline is at the very least insensitive given current events and Dick’s ethnic roots.

Plus, Dick turning on Superman is just weird, and the preview pages are not helping my concerns.

So be critical of the concept but be careful not to declare what the narrative is trying to say until we know what the narrative is.

7. And if it does come out to be “feel bad for Dick, not all fascists, narrative supports the fascist regime for just wanting the best for us” angle?

Then go crazy guys. Though even if it does go that way, it still won’t be as Hydra cap. Because at least it’s still only a elseworld.  Which is like the worst consolation prize ever.

Mirror For The Sun - Part 9: Las Vegas

Masterlist  -  Series Masterlist  -  Part 8  -  Part 10

Summary: (Bucky POV) Nat tricks you into leading a road trip with Bucky, Sam and Steve. Her plot is partly to get the boys to travel for fun for once but mostly to get you and Bucky together. You and Bucky, who seemingly despise each other.

Warnings: swearing, shameless twisting of canon to suit my lazy writing needs

Author’s Note: Ok I don’t know how I feel about this part but this is the second rewrite and I just… here it is.

After days crammed in the car and a night sleeping in the woods, this enormous suite in this luxury hotel feels excessive. Nat seemed to blend right in, a smug grin painting her face, not a hair out of place, a sleek dress to match the sleek tables and bright furniture. She’s the exact opposite of her friend, linked arm in arm with her, hair a soft tangle, still in that hoodie whose campfire smell lingers every time she moves. Just thinking about the smell of it reminds me of the morning but I shake the thought from my head, there are enough distractions here.

A/N: I’m finally wrapping up this series. It didn’t quite go the way I had anticipated but I enjoyed it. Thank you to all of you extremely patient people who followed along with me. I’d love to hear what you thought of the series as a whole and what I should/shouldn’t do in future series. I love you all. Special thanks to my babe, @sebbytrash, for reading through this for me. I love you.

When you awoke that Saturday afternoon, a mere three weeks since you met the life ruiner, Bucky Barnes, your heart literally hurt. Who were you to stop a wedding? You barely knew this guy. There was nothing you could do.

So, i’ve been pondering the teaser trailer and while I’m super into most of the interpretations I’ve seen, I had an idea spark into my head about an alternate interpretation. Now, mind you, I’m not 100% sold on this meta, even though I’m the one writing it, but I figured I’d put the idea out there and see if I can convince myself, or maybe anyone else has some other insight into it.

So first off, this hinges on the idea of “balance” that we’ve been screaming about for 40 years of Star Wars. We know, thanks to The Force Awakens novelization, that Snoke prizes Kylo Ren above anyone else because he is the child of balance.

It is where you are from. What you are made of. The dark side—and the light.

That being said, even with Kylo Ren knowing this, he still swears that he must be Dark Side, that being called to the light is somehow bad. Snoke views him as like, the epitome of the force, but Kylo Ren is resistant to the idea.

So anyway, let’s get into the actual thought I was having. In the trailer, Luke’s voice tells Rey (assumably) to “Reach out. What do you see?” Rey responds “Light. Darkness. A Balance.”

Most people are interpreting this as Rey reaching out into the force, describing the force as light and dark and balanced. But that seems to over-simplify it. Obviously we as viewers are aware that the force can be dark and light. The balance isn’t a new concept to us, we’ve been talking about it forever. What seems like !!!! GREY JEDI !!!! sort of hint is actually pretty standard fair for what we’ve come to expect from the Star Wars movies, light side, dark side, balance yo.

So what I’m thinking, and like I said, I’m not 100% sold on this idea myself, so I’m really just spitballing here… is that Luke is fully aware of the connection between Rey and Kylo Ren. He can tell that they are linked in the force. And so he tests it, he has her test the limit of the connection. He tells her to “Reach out” and she connects with Kylo Ren (perhaps unknowing that it’s him she’s connecting to). Luke can tell, so he asks “what do you see?”

Rey responds: Light.

And we get a shot of Kylo Ren’s mother. His light. Leia’s voice calls out “You’re my only hope.”

And then Rey says: Darkness.

And we get a shot of Kylo Ren’s helmet - with eyes that look closer to Vader’s helmet. His mask of the dark side. Vader breathing. Obi-wan saying “He was seduced by the dark side.”

And then Rey says: A Balance.

And we see a hand touching an ancient page with a Jedi symbol. I’m doubtful that would be Luke, as I believe he has a black glove? And he wasn’t even wearing a glove in TFA so. I’m not feeling it being Rey because with the exception of her on Jakku, she’s not really been a glove kind of gal. For the sake of this speculative meta, I’m going to say that this is the gloved hand of Ben Solo discovering these books on his adventures with Luke - which led to his falling out with Luke.

SO YEAH. If that’s the case, then Rey’s words, Light, Darkness, A Balance would have all been illustrated in this teaser trailer by something with a direct connection to Ben/Ren. Which would seem to suggest that it’s not just the force she’s reaching out into but, but her connection to Kylo Ren. And what she sees isn’t a growing Sith Lord, but someone who will bring balance to the force with her.

Any thoughts or additions or arguments? This is just stream of consciousness meta-ing here so I’d love to hear other feedback!

Modern Animorphs AU (part 2)

@jollysunflora : The second half of my complete list of modern AU Animorphs headcanons, approximately one per book.

28. “Ax,” Marco says, “How come you can roll out ‘venti dulce de leche dark-chocolate frappuchino extra whip’ without batting an eye, but you giggle every time you have to say the word ‘soy’?”

  • “It has so many vowel—owl?—sounds, in so little space,” Ax says.  “That long sssssssssss, so pleasant on the tongue, but then that odd oooyyy ooy-yah?  All in the back of the mouth.  Very strange.  Sssoooy.  Ssususs-oooyaaa.”
  • “Also, he’s moved on from the frappuchinos,” Tobias adds.  “Now he keeps spending all our hard-stolen bitcoins on espresso mack… mach…”
  • “Espresso macchiato con panna,” Ax explains.  “Doppio.”

29. Cassie feels herself sweating as she props the laptop across the room from her, tools laid out and Ax unconscious on the table.  She never expected to find a YouTube video on how to perform brain surgery—and to be honest, it’s actually about “how neurosurgeons perform an orbitozygomatic craniotomy,” not intended to be a how-to manual—but it’s the best she can do under the circumstances, and so she’ll follow along for now.

MM3.  “That’s the kind of strong leadership we need.”  Jake gestures to the full-color television (this year’s latest model) where a program of their current leader plays on a loop.  “Keeping the wrong kind of people out of this country, saving America for the right kind of Americans.”

  • “Yeah, yeah, whatever,” Rachel says.  She and Tobias and Jake are the only three Animorphs, except when Melissa joins them sometimes, and listening to their “Supreme Leader” blather on gets old sometimes.  “All I want to know is whether it’s true that within a few years people will really have phones that plug into their cars.  That’d be cool.”
  • Tobias rubs his eyes against the silk of his wing feathers.  They itch constantly, since he doesn’t have a gas mask to wear every time he goes out into the pollution-opaque air outside the way that his human friends do.  Jake and Rachel take bets sometimes, idly, brutally, about whether he’s the last raptor left on the face of the planet.
  • “Magnificent!”  Drode appears in their midst, and both the Berensons immediately point guns at his head.

30. Marco is lying on his bed the day after watching Eva fall, staring at a patch of wall above his dresser, when he registers that his phone has been buzzing for a while now.  It goes off so many times he assumes he has to be getting a call, but when he checks his notifications he just discovers he’s gotten seventeen text messages in the last hour.

  • The first is from “Smurfette,” and says “Did you know that there is a type of food that involves baking a cinnamon bun inside of a donut?  We must secure as many of these as it is possible for a human to consume, as soon as possible!”
  • The next one, from “Hawkgirl,” reads: “found out recently that apparently ax still thinks you invented flea powder.  i told him that if youd invented flea powder wed all be a lot richer right now.”
  • “Team Dad” (not to be confused with “Real Dad,” which is how Marco lists Peter) sent along several invitations to team missions on League of Legends this afternoon, along with a threat to have Cassie play Marco’s avatar if Marco doesn’t join in.  “we both know that by the time you get back you’ll have only healing attacks and she’ll have trained it to apologize automatically for stabbing people,” Jake adds.
  • One of the many texts from “Julia Butterfly Hill” suggests that Jake has underestimated Cassie’s diabolical streak, because it’s a screenshot of a clone of his account which has had its name changed to HarambeWasFramed.
  • The real surprise, however, is the single text from “Xena: Warrior Princess.”  It’s a link to an article about a disaster in the local national park and the efforts to clean up the wreckage of an as-yet-unidentified craft which went down in the canyon.  Marco has to read it a few times to understand the point she’s making, because it’s all about what’s not there: the article makes no mention of any human bodies being found among the wreckage.
  • Marco gets halfway through typing a reply to them all which informs them in no uncertain terms that he sees through their transparent attempts to cheer him up and doesn’t appreciate it, but he deletes without sending.  He can practically hear his mom’s voice saying it: he can focus on the fact that he’s still surrounded by people who love him, or he can focus on the negative side of everything.  And being constantly negative is no way to live.

31. “Sharing this again, because its been 3 months,” Jake’s cousin Brooke posts on Facebook.  “Anyone who has any news at all about Saddler, no matter what it is, PLEASE contact my family.  Big brother, I dont know if youre still out there, but I miss you.  I miss you like crazy.”

  • Jake turns up his Spotify’s Offspring channel a little louder to drown out the sounds of Tom and his dad shouting at each other downstairs.  His eyes flinch past Brooke’s post, but they can’t move fast enough to prevent the thought that flashes across the surface of his mind: Is this going to be me a year from now?

32. Tobias texts Rachel and Jake an article from Audubon.Org, where several birdwatchers are going into ecstasies of scientific fascination at the bald eagle and peregrine falcon seen flying in close formation in a cell-phone video taken near a highway overpass downtown.  His only comment is, “Told you so.”

33.  In the aftermath, Rachel does a Google search: “PTSD treatment symptoms outcomes.”  She reads through the WebMD site, the NIMH page, the Wikipedia link to a DSM-5 entry.  She thinks of Tobias’s withdrawn silences, his antipathy toward so much they used to enjoy, but she thinks of other things as well.  How exhausted Jake seems any time they’re not on-mission.  How badly Cassie flinches when the school bell rings and doors slam.  How Ax seems to be gradually losing interest in the things—cooking shows, new condiments, human history trivia, These Messages—that once drew his fascination.  How last week Marco flicked an ant off the back of his hand and then went white like he’d just kicked a puppy.  How good it had felt when she’d hurt David, spreading the pain around, giving it back.

  • She catches an Uber to the clinic downtown, filling out forms in the waiting room based on the checklist written on her phone for “how to get tobias an ssri”: Yes, she often feels tense and worried.  Yes, her heart often races for no reason.  No, she hasn’t thought of ending her life.  No, she doesn’t feel out of control when she eats.
  • She gets as far as developing a cover story—it’s about how she’s never felt the same since her parents’ divorce—but in the hallway to the office she panics and calls Cassie.  “Am I doing the right thing?” she asks, after she’s explained.
  • Cassie is silent for a long time, never a good sign.  “I’m not sure an SSRI would work on a bird,” she says at last, “and that’s even if we could figure out a dose that would work without killing him.  I know you want to help, and I think you should, but…”
  • Rachel hears what she’s not saying: but what if her mom asks too many questions?  But is this risk really worth it?  But what if the psychiatrist (the receptionist, the pharmacist) is a controller?  But isn’t it them, and only them, against the world, and isn’t that just how it has to be?
  • “The war won’t last forever,” Cassie says weakly, and Rachel hates her a little for it.  “When it’s over, when we get to tell everyone what’s happening…”
  • Rachel hangs up.  She goes home, morphs, and flies out to the woods.
  • «You know I love you, right?» she asks Tobias later that evening.
  • «Of course I do.»  He sounds exhausted.  She’s never felt more helpless in her life.

34. The Yeerk Peace Movement, as it comes out, has a Twitter feed.  It is rather painfully obvious that it has been set up and run entirely by aliens who are doing their very best to communicate with humans, and not quite succeeding. Most of the posts are couplets, for some reason that none of the Animorphs can fathom.

  • “Want to be On Fleek? When you see someone’s rights threatened, speak!”
  • “Don’t be a Belieber anymore - end slavery and even the score.”
  • “#tbt: Remember when we were symbiotes?  Give taxxon freedom your sympathy votes!”
  • “Nickelback is super lame, and keeping involuntary hosts is just the same.”
  • “Respect your host’s rights today, and make your human into your bae!”

35. It’s Marco who comes up with the idea for how to take down William Roger Tennant.  This is a guy, after all, whose cockatiels have their own Instagram account: he runs his fame on the internet.

  • “It’s simple,” Marco explains. “We start a hashtag—#notsonicetennant—and we make it go viral.  All we have to do is film this guy everywhere he goes, and eventually the yeerk will slip up.”
  • It proves not to be simple after all.  Their gif of Tennant twitching madly mid-EPA speech gets overshadowed by the news story about One Direction nearly getting poisoned with spiders at the same banquet. Ax does not understand the concept of hashtag, and keeps adding #notsonicetennant to his retweets of what Marco calls “food porn.” They train one of Tobias’s repurposed GoPros to follow poodle-Marco, but that becomes a meme mocking the world’s most obnoxious stray dog rather than Tennant himself.
  • The plan finally, finally comes off when they pull out all the stops and just confront him in morph.  The smartphones that Rachel rigged up in the surrounding buildings don’t pick up the thought speak, but the audio of Tennant screaming at the aliens to leave him alone comes through just fine.
  • When the scandal breaks, the internet (in truly predictable fashion) drops #notsonicetennant and starts using #tennantgate instead.
  • Ax reposts an old photo of Tennant eating a quinoa salad—zoomed in on the salad—and tags it #tennantgate.  All of his teammates assure him they appreciate the attempt.

36. “All right, that’s just weird,” Marco says, looking at the final entry in the underwater creepshow they’ve been walking through for the past hour.  “All the other ships have been getting more modern as we’ve gone, but this one?  Looks like it was made in the sixties, at the latest.”

  • «The world’s creepiest museum curators are getting sloppy with the placement of bodies as well,» Tobias points out.  «There’s no way that many people could fit on a boat that small.  They’re practically falling over the sides.»
  • Jake and Cassie look at each other, seeing the same realization reflected in each other’s eyes.  Neither one of them wants to say it out loud.
  • Jake becomes the one to bite the bullet.  “Don’t you get it?”  He points to the ragged clothes, the emaciated bodies, the modern smartphone tucked in among the antiquated radio equipment.  “They were refugees.”

37. Rachel shuts the window on the library computer as soon as she hears someone walk into the room, but she can tell she was too late by the look on Jake’s face when she turns around.

  • “Roy Ludvig, huh?” Jake says.  “Heck of a name.”
  • “He was at the T.V. studio when we attacked.”  Rachel looks down, picking at her nail polish.  “No civilians were supposed to be in danger.”
  • Jake’s expression softens, as much as it ever does.  “And now you’re scrolling through his Facebook, looking for something that’ll let you sleep at night.”
  • “He’s got a grandson,” Rachel blurts.  “Jordan’s age.  He…”  She shrugs.  He’s dead, and it’s more or less her fault.
  • “Shouldn’t be looking on Facebook.”  Jake sets his phone on the library table next to her, taps the screen to bring up an official-looking report.  “You should be, say, borrowing my dad’s computer.  Sending an email from his account to ask for the guy’s medical records.  If you had, you’d know that Mr. Roy Ludvig had a heart condition.  That he had maybe a year to live, at most, and doctors said he might die at any old time.”
  • Rachel looks down at the report for a long time, and eventually looks up at Jake.  “Doesn’t make it okay, what I did,” she says.  “He’s still dead.”
  • Jake shrugs.  “You don’t have to forget it ever happened, but you do have to live with it.  Live, and fight another day.”

38. In the aftermath of Estrid’s visit, Tobias is flying over the boardwalk when he sees a henna artist who clearly smokes way too much pot to be a Yeerk. He gets Ax, they morph human, and both get henna tattoos of Elfangor’s name. (Ax had previously expressed an admiration for the human tradition of commemorating a lost loved one by making markings on one’s body.) They know the tats will disappear when they demorph, but they’re both glad they did it. The artist asks how long they’ve been together, and Tobias says in a scandalized voice, “he’s my UNCLE!” Thus, Tobias succeeds in both of his goals: making Ax laugh, and reminding him he has family here on Earth. Honestly, the reminder doesn’t hurt Tobias either.

39. “You know, not all squirrels are like that,” Marco is fond of saying after a morph goes wrong.  “Not all termites are horrifying worker drones.”  Sometimes it’s, “You know, some of my best friends are fleas.”

  • It’s Cassie, however, who gets the last laugh out of that one.  «You know, Marco,» she says as they swim away from the wreckage of the helicopter, «Not all ants are like that, right?  I shouldn’t say that all ants are killers, right?»
  • Marco stares at her in silence while the others snicker, watching him war between the two impulses: to keep the joke going forever, and to express his honest hatred of ants.
  • «Come on.»  And now Rachel has joined in on the teasing.  «You’re just going to let that kind of besmirching of the ant community stand?»
  • «Okay, okay!»  Marco gives in.  «Ants suck.  Yes, all ants!»

40. “Our experts have examined the video extensively, and near as we can conclude, this footage is genuine and unedited,” the newscaster says.  “Given how viral this video has proven to be, with over two million views since it was posted to YouTube on Wednesday, everyone wants to know: is this footage proof that aliens exist?  Is this a publicity stunt for the upcoming Fantastic Beasts sequel?  Or, as one YouTube commenter asks, did a Smurf just have sex with a centaur?”

  • «Potential new ally?» Tobias suggests.  He’s already tapping out a search for the original video in his modified tablet.
  • Ax laughs.  «Of course not.  He’s crippled.  A vecol.  Useless.  We must respect the privacy of his isolation.»
  • “You know what?  Fuck that,” Marco snaps.  He shoves to his feet, posture tight with anger.  “Just… Fuck that,” he tells Ax.  “I have ADHD.  Attention Deficit whateverthefuck.  I take a pill every morning to help me function because my brain isn’t good enough to filter stimuli all by itself.  I got a fucking 135 on the world’s most boring IQ test and I’m still failing half my classes.  I’m a vecol.  You think I’m useless, huh?  You gonna start refusing to talk to me because of some bullshit about ‘respecting’ my ‘privacy’?  Huh?”
  • «That’s different,» Ax says.  «You’re not…»  He doesn’t seem to know how to finish that sentence.
  • «If he’s an exception, I hope I am too,» Tobias says more gently.  «I got screened for anxiety disorders as a kid, and I guess we’ll never know if I qualify or not, ‘cause my aunt decided that doctors cost money and if the test said I needed one then she didn’t want to know about it.»
  • Ax doesn’t answer for a long time.  He doesn’t seem to know where to look.
  • «Let’s go tell the others what we found.»  Tobias taps a button to send the video to himself.  «We can talk more about this later.»

MM4. Tobias flinches when his phone makes the small ping sound that means he has an alert.  The new kid is the easy target in every school on the planet.  He wonders what it’ll be this time: another Facebook post where the semi-anonymous account Toby IsALoser tags him in another meme about how he has to pay people for sex because the sight of his body would make any normal girl run away screaming, another unnamed Instagram ping telling him he should kill himself so that no one has to look at his stupid fat face anymore, another Snapchat image of a puddle of vomit with the caption “me when I think of you,” an email with the most disgusting gif anyone could find after a quick search…

  • It’s not, though.  It’s an invite to join a private Facebook group, called The Sharing, with several hundred local members.  Most of the names Tobias recognizes are cool older kids from the high school.  Intrigued, willing to trust for the moment that this isn’t some ridiculously elaborate prank, Tobias clicks “join.”

41. Jake looks around at the enormous open field, concrete pitted with openings and low hovels of corrugated steel and rebar.  He can see for nearly half a mile in every direction before the smog makes it impossible, and the tallest things around are the hunched hork-bajir.  “Where are we?” he asks.

  • Cassie frowns.  “This?  Jake, this is downtown Manhattan.”
  • He gapes at her.  “What happened to it?”
  • “Tall buildings are targets for drone strikes,” she says casually, turning away.  “The only way to be safe was to go underground.”

42. Marco doesn’t bother going to the house of the guy who photographed them, nor does he try to catch the kid before he uploads the video anywhere.  Instead he waits for the image to appear on YouTube, then becomes the first commenter.  “Sweet manip!” he says.  “Is that Photoshop, or can you do that in free programs like Gimp?”

43.  “EarthIsOurs-dot-tumblr-dot-com?” Marco says incredulously.  “What does Taylor do there, post pictures of her pet taxxon?  Reblog plans for planetary domination?”

  • «Judging from her archive history, she’s had this blog for many years,» Ax says.  «She recently changed the domain name, but some of the content on here is from as early as 2008.»
  • Jake and Marco get caught up in debating with Cassie about what exactly to send to her, but Tobias just scrolls quietly through Taylor’s old posts.  She didn’t lie about being beautiful, he realizes, or about being popular.  There’s a long blank period in her tumblr account in mid-2014.  And then she posted one selfie—just one—after the fire.
  • He can’t bring himself to read the names that the trolls call her, or the discussions about how much money they’d have to be paid to have sex with her.  But there’s no overlooking the suggestions that she kill herself.  The posts are too numerous, too vitriolic.
  • “Every chick ever to wander onto the internet has gotten that crap,” Rachel says; clearly she’s been reading over his shoulder.  “She should’ve developed thick skin, not joined the Sharing.”
  • Tobias thinks of the Facebook page made at his old school just to discuss the fact that he’s a chubby zit-face, of the posts which eventually overwhelmed his Instagram with death threats.  «Yeah, I guess,» he says.

44.  It takes a long time for Cassie to get home from Australia, but at least they’re not too worried for most of that time; she texts them her location and a brief description of the insanity that landed her in the Outback as soon as she gets in contact with Yami’s family.

45.  “None of this makes any sense,” Peter says.  “I’m hallucinating, or you’re delusional, or else—”

  • Marco sets his phone in Peter’s lap. “Check the timestamp, Dad.  I took that six months ago.”
  • Peter stares at the phone for a long minute, and then slowly looks up at Marco.  At a clear loss for words, he tilts his head back toward the screen.
  • “I know.”  Marco laughs, the sound wet with tears.  “That blond wig looks terrible on her.  But it’s really her, Dad.  I swear.”

46. “So they’re going to get the U.S. embroiled in another war,” Marco says.  “And this one with a country that can actually fight back.”

  • «Seems like,» Tobias says.  «Only why bother with all the secrecy and political wrangling?  Why not just send a couple mean tweets to Donald Trump and Kim Jong-Un?  That’d probably do the job just as well.»
  • “No, it wouldn’t.”  Jake runs a hand through his hair, looking around at them all.  “The yeerks need a total war.  Everything the U.S. and its allies can pull out, against everything China and its allies can muster.  Our military has gotten too used to sending drones to fight its wars, to ‘tactical strikes’ against insurgents.  If the yeerks want half the species annihilated, they have to do a lot more than poke a couple of egos.”

47. “News flash,” Marco says.  “Your average suburbanite ain’t gonna accept a seven-foot-tall alien for a neighbor.  You know the number of times my mom’s been asked for proof of citizenship before she was allowed to vote or cash a paycheck or buy a car?  How many times she’s been pulled over by cops while driving the speed limit with her seatbelt on?  And she’s a regular old human being.  Toby’s right—the hork-bajir have a whole other fight coming if we ever win the war.”

48. Rachel feels the blood drain from her face when she opens the Facebook message and sees the name attached.  David’s Facebook account has been defunct for almost two years now; there’s no one left who would want or even be able to access it from the outside.  Should be no one.

  • Miss me? the message from David’s account says.
  • Who are you? she types with shaking fingers.  What do you want?
  • I know what you did.  I’m coming for you.  I’ve got friends all over the place and they’ll find you.  They’ll kill you.  Amazing the allies you can get, when you know where the bodies are kept.  On the internet, no one knows you’re a—
  • Rachel hits “block.”  She tells herself that the screaming nightmares she has all that night and into the next are the product of having a stressful life, she’s an Animorph for pete’s sake.
  • She doesn’t stop shuddering every time she gets a message for the next two weeks, but she never hears from whoever (It wasn’t David. It couldn’t have been.) it was ever again.

49.  They stagger away from yet another hopeless fight, all of them injured, half of them missing limbs or bleeding to death.  Dragging their damaged bodies behind the first dumpster they find, they demorph, remorph, and force their minds to focus long enough for the long flight home.  It’s only when Rachel is in owl morph, staring around the dimly lit alleyway, that she sees the security camera pointed directly at their location.

  • «They must not check it that often,» Marco says without much hope.  «Or else they’d be out here already to come looking for us.»
  • «Doesn’t matter,» Tobias says harshly.  «It had a perfectly clear view of all your human faces.  And that building is owned by the yeerks.»
  • They all stare at each other in dull shock as the realization sinks in.  They always knew this moment was coming—they could only be so careful for so long—and yet, on some level each of them hoped it never would.
  • «Take one more night to be with your families,» Jake says at last.  «We evacuate everyone in the morning.»
  • Jake loses his phone, again, somewhere amidst all the chaos.  This time around he doesn’t bother to replace it.  It’s not like his mom is going to be wondering where he is, not anymore.

50.  “So,” Jake says, “this is going to sound crazy, but—”

  • “Aliens are invading the planet, and you’re the only kid terrorist who can stop them?” James suggests.  “We do have wifi up here, you know.  You’re Jake Berenson, right?  You’re all over the conspiracy theorists’ forums right now.”
  • “Um.”  Jake runs a hand through his hair, starts again.  “Yeah, pretty much.”
  • James nods.  “In that case, you’ve got thirty seconds to convince me your story’s not a load of crap before I call security.”

51. Ax secures their wifi in something a billion times better-hidden than Tor.  With that reassurance, they all end up starting blogs.

  • Marco’s is a rambling string of wry comments about everything from the invasion to his parents’ science projects.  Sample post: “Insider source (aka my mom): Visser Three has morphed human and eaten AN ENTIRE BAG OF MARSHMALLOWS in one sitting, ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION.  Pass it on!”
  • Jake’s is the place that people go to find out how they can help, and to get his reassurance that the help means something.  Sample post: “As Barack Obama says, ‘We the people recognize that we have responsibilities as well as rights; that our destinies are bound together; that a freedom without a commitment to others is unworthy of our founding ideals, and those who died in their defense.’  This fight will never be over just as long as we keep supporting each other.  I can’t tell you how grateful I am to you all for the KickStarter donations.”
  • Rachel’s has beauty tips for the American girl on the run, light and self-deprecating enough that you often don’t notice the undercurrent of desperation.  Sample post: “If you want to be able to look at yourself in the mirror, try fixing your hair using reflective surfaces such as pots, ponds, or pieces of Bug fighter wreckage.  Alternately, just say ‘fuck it’ and never look at yourself again.”
  • Cassie’s tells people how to stay safe, and how to keep their environments safe as well.  Sample post: “Everyone please remember, it’s important to stock enough food and water for family pets as well as humans when retreating to an apocalypse bunker!”
  • Tobias’s has a lot of good-natured grumbling about everyday life in the valley.  Sample post: “In other news, my girlfriend’s mom is currently arguing with the smartest being on the face of the planet about where to put the new latrine facilities.  Sorry Naomi, but my money’s on Toby.”
  • Ax’s has a lot of food reviews, of course, but again there’s that undercurrent of desperation, almost like he’s trying to convince someone else (or maybe even himself) that humans are worth saving.  Sample post: “Marco assures me that there are no less than 23 distinct flavors contained within every sip of Dr. Pepper.  Just think of the years of experimentation and innovation it must have required to produce a drink which can inspire 23 different reactions from human taste buds, all at the same time.  Truly inspired genius.”

52. They run drills upon drills for what to do in case of a drone strike.  Using any morphs they have that can dig or build—mole, taxxon, elephant, beaver—the Animorphs create an extensive network of tunnels and shelters, posting guards at all times to keep their eyes on the sky.  The hork-bajir valley doesn’t show up on satellite imagery, which they only know thanks to Peter’s definitely-illegal fact-gathering missions on the darkweb, but they don’t know for sure whether an overhead camera would be subject to the same strange perceptual distortions they all experience when flying there as birds.  They nearly lose their precious secrecy when Naomi sends several emails from her work account, claiming she’s being held hostage and asking anyone who will listen to come rescue her.  Eva generates a hasty follow-up from the same account asking people to ignore “the prank that I now realize was in poor taste,” but none of them are sure it worked for the next several days.

53. Rachel makes one last post on her nearly-extinct Instagram account.  This time the scrap of paper she uses appears to be torn from the back of a food label, but the penciled script is as intricate as ever.  It reads “Who wants to live forever? —Freddie Mercury, 1986”

54. After it’s all over, Tobias retreats, he hides, but he keeps a thread of communication open.  Cassie shoots him an email with the subject line “Hawk patient with intermittent aggression and lethargy—any idea what could be causing it?”  Marco sends him idiotic memes that now feature the Animorphs’ names and faces.  Ax asks for constant updates on the new wing of Taco Bell being built downtown, and repays the favor by leaking confidential information about the search for the Blade ship.

  • And then he gets one of the stranger emails he’s ever received.  It’s an offer of a full legacy scholarship to Harvard University (which has just found the means to explain some inconsistencies in the records of one “Alan Fangor,” who graduated in the ‘80s) in exchange for Tobias teaching one class per semester on any subject of his choice.  He agrees, with the stipulation that all his classes be online.
  • The resultant course (Ornithology 442: An Insider’s Perspective) is like nothing the students who participate have ever seen before.  Tobias will write out rambling treatises on Why Blue Jays Suck or All the Ways Hawks Are Superior to Eagles with a thought-speak-to-text recorder.  He’ll deliver online lectures from a shaky webcam pointed into a nonspecific tree, occasionally wandering off for hours at a time to go hunting.  Students who ask him personal questions about Rachel get regurgitated mouse skeletons Fed-Exed to their campus mailboxes.  Essays that don’t demonstrate much effort get feedback such as “even I can tell this sucks and I have a seventh-grade education” or “my grandmother could make better sentences than this AND SHE’S AN ANDALITE WHO DOESN’T SPEAK ENGLISH.”  Assignments include “find one bird fact in a textbook and explain why it’s a load of crap” or “go film a Boston pigeon until it does something interesting, I dare you.”
  • Nevertheless, enrollment is so popular that Harvard has a three-year waiting list and charges students an extra $500 just to sign up.  When Tobias finds out about the extra fee, he promptly video-calls the Intrepid, gives Ax remote access to his computer, and explains why he needs Ax to convert the course illegally to a MOOC.  Harvard University fires him for breach of contract; Yale hires him on that very same afternoon.

Fandom Writing Challenge | envydean
Fandom: Supernatural
Pairing: Destiel
Prompt: Ice Skating
Word Count: 2,362
Summary: Dean’s been a fan of the men’s figure skating for as long as he can remember. He’s always been fascinated by how the contestants move on the ice, contort their elegant bodies into beautiful positions and land each jump with grace – not that anyone at school knows this, they only know Dean as the tough-man soccer player. When Dean’s favourite under twenty-one’s figure skater transfers to his school, sparks fly.

[AO3]

Dean glances at the clock in the corner of his laptop screen only for a spark of panic to shoot through him. There’s still seven minutes left of the YouTube catch up video he’s watching and he wants to finish it, except that will make him late for school. Four lates in a row and he’ll end up getting a detention which means he’ll be even later watching the video. Dean wishes it would be a simple choice, school or men’s figure skating semi-finals.

Dean growls as he hits the pause button before slamming his laptop harder than he intended. He’ll watch it after school, he decides he would rather wait than get yelled at by his dad for the late mark letter he’ll no doubt receive. Dean grabs his backpack and heads down stairs before locking the door behind him and walking the well-known route to school.

*

There’s barely anyone around when he arrives, only the last few people filing into their classes for the start of the day. His English class is, unfortunately on the other side of the school grounds and he makes a dash for it. Mr. Crowley isn’t Dean’s number one fan in the first place and Dean doesn’t want to get into his bad books when he’s in his final year of high school.

When Dean sneaks into class, there’s none of the usual hustle and bustle that he’s used to at the start of the lesson. Instead, the class is silent and they’re all looking to the front of the class. For a moment, Dean wonders if all eyes are really on him and when he looks to the front, he’s expecting Mr. Crowley’s glare.

Except, he’s met with strikingly familiar blue eyes.

2017 Louden Swain SPN Mini Bang

Last year, we had such a great time with the Louden Swain Writing Challenge (which turned into a mini bang) and the band LOVED seeing the results so we’re going to do it again! (Please be gentle with me as host, as this is my first time being involved with any kind of bang, much less hosting one.)

Let’s show Rob and the band some love by letting their songs inspire us!

I’m looking for BOTH writers and artists for this! Last year, we had art for every story (thanks to hours and hours of work by @leatherwhiskeycoffeeplaid ) and I’d love to do the same this year. Whether you’re drawing or making aesthetics or doing something else, WE WANT YOU. All art and stories will be put together, printed, put in a snazzy binder, and presented to the band at ChiCon!

Here are the rules:

Deadline for everything is June 30th. I will need time to put everything together, print it out, and assemble it. NO LATE ENTRIES! Last year I only gave myself a week, and I was still sorting through everything Friday night after karaoke. I’m not going to make a deadline to sign up, but if you sign up the week before the end, you will only have a week to complete your part.

Artists:
- You will be expected to work with writers so the art reflects the story. Whether you pick a song you like and get together with the writer, or pick a writer you like and get together on a song, it doesn’t matter to me.
- If you’d like me to pair you with a writer, let me know, and I will match you up with someone.
- When you’re making your art, keep in mind that it will be pasted into a Word document, printed on letter-sized paper, and put into a sheet protector in a binder. You might want to print out what you make to see how it looks on the page.
- You can post your art in your own post and tag me and #2017 Louden Swain SPN Mini Bang or submit it to me through my blog or send it to me via carrier pigeon (please don’t send it via carrier pigeon, I have cats) or drop me a line and I’ll give you an email address to send it to.
- I will need cover art! Last year’s cover was beautifully drawn by @vyles-ray as a favor to me when I freaked out about needing a cover. If you have an idea for cover art, let me know, and we can talk!

Writers:
- Can be any pairing or ship, reader-insert or OC, or even no pairing, whatever floats your boat. Please no RPF.
- Please no smut. Anything else is up for grabs. Or maybe just a headcanon kind of thing.
- Pick a song and SEND ME AN ASK with the song you have picked to sign up. I will update this post with the songs taken. Songs will be assigned on a first come, first serve basis.
- You can’t write for the same song you wrote about last year. This is to ensure variety in the stories from year to year.
- Tag me in your fic, plus use the tag #2017 Louden Swain SPN Mini Bang. You can also submit your fic to me through my blog, or send me a message and we can discuss the pigeon and email options. (Really prefer no pigeons.)
- You must use a Keep Reading feature if your fic is posted to Tumblr and over 500 words.
- Your fic can either be a story based on the song or just have it somehow highlight the song. Since Rob will get to read these, I’d rather the fics be more relevant than just a song playing on the radio in the background, but do what you can.
- Your fic can also be a part of another challenge, BUT make your fic relevant to the song you choose, please! (Basically, please do more for this challenge than having a Louden Swain song playing in the background.)
- If I haven’t liked or reblogged your post within a couple days, let me know I missed it!

UPDATE - Audio & Video submissions!

I have been convinced to add audio/video submissions to the project! What I will do is link them to the masterpost for the whole project, and dedicate a page in the book directing the readers to the masterpost to find links to the other submissions. (I’ll list the submissions, too, with whatever description you’d like me to add, so it won’t just be a throwaway line, it will be clear how many videos, etc are there to be seen.)

List of songs and participants signed up so far:

Able-Legged Heroes:

About Cosplay

Real quick, before I go completely MIA, I want to share something you probably would’ve have known if you haven’t seen my DA, that being my first full cosplay, of Sans. I had forgotten to post about it when I started uploading my Undertale art, so I guess now’s as good a time as any. So, if you have the time, I want to tell you about and show you the process.

First off, I live near the Phoenix area in Arizona, so I’ve been to Saboten Con (when it was still around) and twice to Phoenix ComiCon. First time was probably two or three years ago. Back then it wasn’t nearly as expanded as it is now. Last time I went, I was barely in costume, if at all, but I had wanted to create a full cosplay. At first I wanted to be a Pokemon trainer, but it fell by the wayside. After some time, I took on the endeavor of creating a Sans cosplay.

I started this cosplay in December of last year. This was the first iteration of the foam mask, back when I hadn’t quite gotten the hang of my drawing style for Sans. Looking back, it’s pretty fugly to me, but ya know, it was very early in, before I had gotten a grasp on what I was doing.

I had actually struggled to make the base underneath the face. It took looking up a fursuit tutorial on YouTube for me to realize, “Oh! That’s how you do it!” The black cloth in the sockets here was temporary while I worked on them. The teeth also got majorly redone later on.

And here’s my cat Milo chillin’ out on the scraps. Just thought I’d throw that in too.

Here, I had realized that he needed a bit of a subtle brow ridge that most skeletons have. Plus, while the temporary cloth was out, seeing it placed perfectly over my tablet’s blue light, I had to take a picture.

I was also figuring out the temples and realized they were a bit anatomically incorrect. The mouth was going through a redesign as well. Meaning I had to cut out the teeth that were already there and start over.

Then, the new semester started and I was feeling pretty demotivated to work on it. I did work a bit on it here and there, but it mostly sat in one corner of my desk, unfinished. After the passing of my grandma, I almost couldn’t bring myself to work on it. It sat unfinished even longer. But once the semester started coming to a close and I heard Phoenix ComiCon was coming up, I had the urge to pick it up again. After a metric ton of cutting, trimming, gluing, and trimming again, this was the result:

At this point, I was getting more and more excited about actually seeing it finished. I constantly reminded myself of how proud my grandma would be of me, since I was able to show her the earlier stages before her passing. I’m still sad I’ll never get to show her the completed piece, but I hammer it into myself that she would be immensely happy for me. Anyway, the jacket shown here, turned out to be a darker shade of blue than what I was going for. When I searched up Sans’s in-game sprite, it turned out I needed a lighter shade of blue, so I ordered one off of Amazon after seeing a blog page linking to ideal pieces for a Sans cosplay. I kept the original jacket, since it does get cold in Arizona during the brief winter season.

After this stage, I did a bunch of running around, much to my parents’ expense since I can’t drive, finding a bunch of other materials, such as polyester padding, a white medium shirt to put over the padding, black and white fabric for the pants, tights and polyester cloth for the leggings, black opera-length gloves, white and black fabric paint, polyester clay, grey fleece for the jacket hoodie, a pair of fresh socks that stretch above the ankles, a pair of perfectly pink fuzzy slippers from Sears, wood filler, sandpaper, LED lights, batteries for said lights… Whoo! Okay, yeah. Bottom line, I got a crap ton of stuff.

For the padding, I sewed a pair of old shirts together, one inside the other, and stuffed the padding in between, around my whole middle, and in the shoulders, to give Sans his shallow, stout look. That all took me under a few hours to figure out and put together. After that, I believe, I made the shorts using a pair of existing shorts as a template. They were a bit saggy in the crotch area, but they worked nicely, especially when fitting them over the padding. I also did the hand bones, using the gloves, fabric paint, and polymer clay bones, which I hot glued onto the top of the gloves. Wearing them was also a bit weird. I couldn’t close my fist all the way, but they worked all right.

Not pictured here was the fabric paint on the palm side. Unfortunately, I had to constantly reinforce the glue to keep the bones from popping off. Polymer, as I realized too late, doesn’t like sticking to glue very much, especially with hands that need to be used. Very unfortunately, my fears came true and two of the finger bones popped off during a panel I went to. Lesson learned. This is one baby I have to kill. I’ll go back and completely redo the hands in a different way. They may not be entirely anatomically accurate, but they’ll function. At least the old ones, which I’ve thrown into the garbage, looked cool. They had a nice dimension and were fun to look at.

So, after that, I covered the mask in paper mache (which I forgot to take a picture of. Sorry.) and started laying on the wood filler for the mask.

The wood filler was pretty nice to work with, as it allowed for additional sculpting I couldn’t do with the foam. At this point, Con was coming up fast and I was running out of time. I needed to start sanding. Much to my frustration, it was taking forever. I had left many spots unsanded where the filler didn’t quite stick. It was especially noticeable when I started laying on the gesso. Mom was trying to help me realize that the cosplay may not be complete in time and that I should take more time to work on it and just not go in costume. I hated admitting even to myself that she had a point. I refused to believe I couldn’t do it. I wanted to feel like I had accomplished something by finishing this sucker in time for Con. I was already frustrated at the shoddy work and I stormed into my room (I had been working for hours on end in hot weather just outside the house, doing nothing but sanding and laying on gesso).

I had the biggest fit of my life. Tears streamed down my face. I cried and moaned and even screamed. I pounded my bed like an enraged monkey. All these revelations were going through my head during my fit. Then I thought, why not fill the patchy spots with more wood filler, even over the gesso? I had clearly skimped on it anyway. Once my fit was over, I went right back to work with my idea. It worked. After all the patches were filled, I went back to sanding. I filled where I needed to and sanded again until it was all smooth. I accepted that I wouldn’t get it done before Con started and that I’d miss the Undertale meetup, which, yeah, I did miss it.

I spent the next day at Con, taking pictures, marveling at the more impressive costumes and squeed anytime I saw a fellow Undertale cosplayer. I even came across two young ladies dressed as gender-bent Sans and Papyrus. The Papyrus cosplayer was awesome enough to do the voice when I asked if I could take their picture. That, by the way, is something I appreciate with cosplayers, when they not only dress up as a fun character but play the role as well. It really enriches the experience for me.

Later I went to the exhibition hall and stood in line to see renonwed comic artist George Perez. Needless to say, standing in line wasn’t very fun, but I had brought a few prints of my work with me and was determined to have him evaluate it. Seeing him draw and interacting with the fans was definitely a treat. He had such an energy about him that was very infectious. He had a clear love for his work and his fans that he is capable of staying at his booth for hours on end and very rarely take a break. Eventually, I and my sister, who was also there to get her portfolio evaluated, approached him. Sadly, because of how many people were in line to see him, he couldn’t evaluate our portfolios, but he was very nice about it and directed us to another great comic artist named Tony Parker, who I hadn’t heard of until then. He gave me some very good pointers about pushing a character’s pose and about visual flow when it came to comics. Some of what he had to say I had already sort of known, but it was more than valuable hearing his professional opinion. By that time, my feet were screaming at me and we went home.

Over the next couple days, I went back to finishing my cosplay. I worked on the leggings by cutting out some leg bone shapes out of polyester fabric and hand sewed them straight onto the tights as I wore them. Yes, I did poke myself a number of times. I also had to bend over pretty far to reach around my shins and down to my ankles. On top of that, I had gotten back to sanding the mask and spent the rest of the day laying on several coats of gesso. While waiting for the gesso to dry, I went out and bought the slippers I needed. Once the leggings were done, I finished the gesso and painted the inside of the eyesockets black to minimize light reflection. I then painted the little wrinkles under the eyes and the teeth details. After that, I hot glued the once temporary black fabric into the inner edges of the eyesockets and the nose hole. The LEDs I left for absolute last. These were crucial to the entire look. I mean, obviously. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time or the technical know-how for a complex wiring hook-up, so I stuck the LEDs onto two button batteries with black electric tape and then placed them behind the eyesocket fabric using more tape. I also taped tissue paper around the lights to cut down the ultra brightness. And because I have no switch to turn the lights off, the LEDs had to stay lit up. But they functioned and they actually looked pretty frightening, especially in the dark.

Once I’m able to, I’ll go out and get the parts I need to create a proper and better hook-up. I stayed up until after 2am just to see the eyes finished and I still was able to get up early the next day.

And this is what came from it all:

That’s me on the far left along with a bunch of lovely Charas and Frisks. This was the only picture I was able to get of my full costume that day, so I apologize for the cut at the bottom. I assure you I am wearing the slippers here, and they are comfy as hell. The mouth made it a bit hard for people to hear me and some cracks did appear around the edges, but the mask held up very nicely overall. I could not tell you how many people stopped me for a picture. Seeing their faces light up when they saw me made it all worth it. I want to do this again sometime soon, once I’ve made some improvements, and hopefully make it to the next meetup at whatever con may be coming up next in the future. What a journey this was. What an amazing experience! 10/10 Would cosplay again.

(part 1) ur gonna roast me for this but im legit curious why mafia AUs are so bad? im asking in a non confrontational way, i get it romanticizing mafia is wrong, but i also believe that 1)most mafia AUs are a really toned down type of mafia;2)they do make for some interesting kinds of dynamics with fanart and with fics; 3)in a fic specifically u can create your own world and call something mafia and still make it so they don't kill innocent people but only idk members of other gangs or sth

(part 2) plus theyre a way to put ur charas in a completely diff context and see what theyll do. i mean i dont believe that writing ships in a certain context (like mafia) equals romanticizing that context. mafia AUs arent even my fav things to read (in fact i almost never do), im sure many ppl romanticize it and i obvs dont agree with that but im just trying to udnerstand bc i believe fandoms are a way to explore things that we normally wouldnt.

I’m not gonna roast you don’t worry xD okay wait let me check if I replied to this already if yes I’m gonna c/p because it’s half past midnight otherwise I’ll just go at it again wait *checks tags* fff obviously I don’t have a general post but anyway pls read this after you’ve done with my post and then this which is also choke-full of links. plus for a (not nice) laugh: here. AH WAIT I FOUND THE POST.

okay, so, let’s have it out of the way: I have nothing against mob aus or crime aus. I have a problem against calling them mafia AUs because in the US mafia = organized crime at large, in Italy mafia = ACTUAL EXISTING ORGANIZATIONS THAT ARE ACTIVELY HARMFUL. now that I introduced the topic I’ll c/p you the reply I gave to another anon who while discussing the issue pointed out that most writers don’t even know Italian mafia is a thing, which is pretty much on the same discourse so…

*The thing is - in the US it might not be enough of a deal anymore and I honestly do get why people make the mafia = regular mobsters, since the mafia was the first foreign organized crime being exported to the US via italian immigrants (sorry if this sounds horrible in English but I just woke up and I still didn’t have coffee) so I understand that mafia became the umbrella term. But the thing is that - as you said, these people don’t even know that there’s a mafia in Italy anymore or where the word comes from.

I’m going to link to italiansreclaimingitaly’s tag about the mafia and its perception outside Italy because they posted about this extensively and it’s an excellent resource, but meanwhile I’m gonna do a very short bullet point list and about the topic:

  • Mafia might not be a big deal in the US, but it still is here. We have the beauty of four different mafias (Cosa Nostra - the Sicilian one, camorra which is the one in Campania but has tendrils spread everywhere, the ‘ndrangheta which is in Calabria and the Sacra Corona Unita in Puglia) which are all active [especially camorra and 'ndrangheta] and whose actions have direct impact (negative) on our economy and on our society. Actually mafias are one of the main reasons we’re currently economically fucked up, and if I start talking about how mafia culture keeps some areas literally backwards I could talk about it for three months.
  • There are still people who are killed for standing up against them. These days the most prominent personality is Roberto Saviano who is a writer who dared to put together a book documenting minutely the way camorra works and he’s been living under protection for years by this point. Like, they want him dead because he wrote a book. And I’m sorta sure that he was talking about leaving Italy and going to the US after years of sticking with it here because he can’t take it anymore but I don’t know if it was a taken decision or if it’s still debating it.
  • It wasn’t even thirty years ago that we had the stragi di mafia - in english it’d be something like the mafia slaughters, basically around the beginning of the nineties there were a number of bombs planted by the mafia targeting people who were trying to oppose it including judges Falcone and Borsellino, actually the anniversary of Falcone’s death is like… tomorrow. And they’ve killed people for way longer than that. Here is a list of only Cosa Nostra victims including the ones from the eighties/nineties. And people are still dying because of it. The slaughters I’m referring to are just the ones in the nineties which are enough of a number.
  • They also perpetuate a culture where if you testify against your mafia-employed relatives you’ll be shunned forever. There are women who testified against their families and couldn’t see their children anymore never mind that they weren’t automatically considered a relative anymore the moment they sided against the mafia. Some people have committed suicide after becoming witnesses also because our police force/justice system can be terribly non-supportive in this kind of situation so they got left on their own. Never mind that back in the day - it was the beginning of the nineties? - I recall at least a particular story of - I think, correct me if I remember wrong but I can’t remember the names for the life of me - where this guy testified against the local mafia when he either used to work for them or was forced to pay them the pizzo and in retaliation his six-year old (or five? Anyway he had a son younger than ten for sure) got kidnapped, killed and thrown into acid to dispose of the body. That happened in what, 1993? 1994? It’s pretty much yesterday. And now the camorra is doing the same - there’s a list here of camorra victims among which accidental passerbys that got killed because they were in the way which I can tell just by glancing is not complete. And I’m not even going into the 'ndrangheta. That is to say, here mafia still kills people and cripples our country.

Now, I get that it’s a word, but the point was: let’s say that instead of the Italians the Japanese came to the US first and the umbrella word for organized crime was yakuza rather than mafia and let’s say yakuza was still what it was originally in Japan while in the US it stopped being a big deal and people write yakuza!AU instead of mafia AU. Let’s say someone Japanese gets angry at that and goes like 'listen the yakuza is a real deal it does this this this and that and it’s a plague in our country so can you please at least look it up before writing your fanfic’, which is what had happened way back then when this whole mafia and fanfic thing blew up. A bunch of people told us to get over it because it’s just a word and if it’s a problem in Italy it’s not in the US so why should they care? Now, if we had been Japanese (or Chinese or Russian or Mexican) would they have said the same thing? Considering the general tumblr attitude I’m pretty sure they would have received either an apology or 'this is an important deal let’s keep that in mind’ with signal boost reblogs and stuff.

It’s the fact that we should get over people not knowing that it’s still a real problem for us and that they can’t take five seconds to google it that is the problem imo. Especially when instead of mafia au you can just say mobsters au or tag it as organized crime and everyone is a lot happier, mostly because as the tag above explains romanticising the mafia is a good thing for them because it means they can act outside Italy with less stigma because everyone thinks that the mafia is dead or not relevant anymore, if I’m explaining myself. (And it’s active outside Italy - like, there was a mafia kill in Germany in 2007 where six people died (sorry the link is in Italian but there isn’t an English wiki page, if you look the city up you’ll find something probably) and it was because of the 'ndrangheta.

I’d really like to not get worked over it because it meant it was a thing of the past y'know, but the problem is that it isn’t and I’d rather spread some awareness in hope some of these writers look it up (because it’s a good thing that people know what mafia is since as stated they have tendrils everywhere - if you read Saviano’s book the entire first chapter is about how camorra regularly deals with Chinese import/export in Italy for one) than shrug and figure that since they’ll think everything is good for fanfic then it’s not even worth my time.*

Now, ^^^ that was the c/p-ed reply that should answer most of your doubts. What I didn’t address was:

im sure many ppl romanticize it and i obvs dont agree with that but im just trying to udnerstand bc i believe fandoms are a way to explore things that we normally wouldnt.

aaaand as we say here in Italy, this is where the donkey falls (sorry we have weird sayings), because in theory there’s nothing wrong with that… except that in 99% of the mafia aus I’ve seen around the thing is that they’re supposed to be cute.

like, I see a lot of shit with TINY MAFIA BOSS STEVE ROGERS with RUSSIAN ENFORCER BUCKY (????? bucky isn’t even russian???) and the yoi thing I saw before had the japanese character being the leader of a russian mafia gang which is… like… guys it doesn’t happen it really doesn’t, and a lot of them re-use wrongly terminology taken from the godfather without context or knowing what the hell it means, and it’s always from the criminals’ pov and they’re somehow seen as criminals doing justice where the police can’t (???) and like… no. mafia bosses/enforcers/employees are bad people period, and at least here if you try to leave or repent they kill your family in retribution. like, not even ten years ago there’s been a woman who used to belong to a mafia family (or one colluded with the mafia) who testified and her entire town/family shunned her and she couldn’t take it anymore and… killed herself drinking acid if I don’t recall wrong. it’s not even special cases. this shit is not funny, it’s not cute, it’s not adorable and it’s not good fodder for your imagine your otp scenario (srsly I saw one like.. let me find it,

LIKE. just look at this shit. in a regular context, the enforcer goes to the show owner to force them to pay a monthly sum to their boss lest they destroy their shop and their lives and their family’s life never mind that mafia culture is deeply homophobic so the mafia enforcer flirting with the shopkeeper is like completely fucking out of the question. I mean, people here like to shit on the sopranos but that show was actually excellent representation of Horrid Criminals Who Were Never Supposed To Be Good People and the small arc that happened when one of tony’s friends turned out to be gay (closeted) was REALLY well done. btw, it ended that when they found out he was gay most of the crowd rejected him and thought badly of him until I think they killed him also for other reasons, but that spiraled from finding out he liked dick. and that’s american mafia that they actually based on well-done research of the culture in Italy it came from, I assure you that here it doesn’t work that differently. like. the shit above is so inaccurate and frankly offensive, it’s like… I get people romanticizing problematic stuff but the thing is that when you tell them that it’s actually offensive you get brushed off as ‘ah well you’re being too sensitive it’s just a word u__u’. now, I’m all for exploring shit we wouldn’t be into, but not like THAT, because that’s like mafia romantic comedy and that’s not how it works. now, you wanna do a fic where the mafia characters are deeply flawed and bad people and the police tries to catch them? fine, great, go ahead. you wanna do a fic where the enforcer above deals with dunno an entire life of internalized homophobia when he finds the shopkeeper attractive and feels conflicted over having to con money out of him and doing horrible shit for a living and maybe understanding that crime isn’t worth it and then he actually collaborates with the police and gets shit from about everyone he knows and loves for that? okay, awesome, go ahead. nothing bad in that.

but the shit above is not exploring things we wouldn’t/writing darkfic, it’s THINKING THAT A CRIMINAL ORGANIZATION WHICH IS STILL A THING IN OUR PART OF THE WORLD IS CUTE AND ADORABLE. and that only plays in their favor because it takes the bad aura out of the word and we really should not let that happen. like. that is what is bad about mafia aus and mafia discourse, that people don’t realize the mafia is alive and well and thriving and not a thing that doesn’t exist or a generic word for organized crime.

you wanna write the shit above? okay, CALL IT CRIME AU or mob au, not mafia au.

btw, add-on: idk if I mentioned it in the above post or not, but in case I didn’t, I said that people would balk at the idea of a mexican cartel au. sadly since then I’ve found out a fandom where not only there is one but it’s also extra cutesy and people apparently love it and it has a bunch of kudos/comments and idek I’m not even touching that with a ten foot pole but like… I’ve avoided it and everything that author wrote because to me it’s just… nope. like, nope. if you do mafia aus don’t make them fucking cute. (also: in the same fandom I had to mute a v. famous fanartist whose art I actually liked but did cutesy mafia aus and.. like… haahahhaahahahahaha nah sorry. can’t go there. nope.)

PART TWO

“I love this song!” You exclaim excitedly as you reach towards the stereo system to turn up the volume. Electric by Alina Baraz begins to blare throughout the car, its relaxing tune filled your ears causing you to hum and slightly move to the music.

Spencer looked over at you, diverting his eyes from the road just for a second to admire how beautiful you looked beside him. He was glad that before you got in the car he had swapped out his classical music CD’s and allowed you to control the radio, even if there wasn’t much control in choosing what songs you wanted to hear that the radio stations played.

The way you lip-synced the lyrics and how you gently swayed your head to the music gave Spencer a warm feeling in his heart. He didn’t realize until that moment how much he had been falling in love with you over the past year and some change he had known you. Everything about you was so perfect to him.

“We’re here!” He announces with a large smile as he parks in front of the large white modern architecture.

“You didn’t,” you say in disbelief admiring the building. “Museum of Fine Arts.”

“I remember you saying how much you love art museums, so here we are,” Spencer shrugs, trying to hide how nervous he was.

“I do love art museums,” you nod, “I can’t believe you remember that.”

You paused for a second, thinking back on what you said. Stupid. Not even out with him for an hour and you’re already freezing up. Of course, the boy remembered, he has an eidetic memory.

“Wait, scratch that, that makes no sense when you remember literally everything,” you correct yourself with a nervous laugh. Spencer couldn’t help but let out a laugh with you, finding comfort in the fact that he could tell you’re nervous as well.

Spencer gets out of the car and races over to your door before you can open it for yourself. When he opens the door for you, he offers you a hand which you gladly take.

“Are you ready to admire some fine art, M'lady?” he asks with a funny accent.

“I would be dazzled to,” you respond in the same vintage accent.

Spencer was hoping to the universe that his hands would not get sweaty while holding yours. He was so nervous and even though he tried covering it up with humor, he was scared you would see through his tough boy act.

The two of you ventured into the museum, stopping by ever sculpture and painting that was in your path. Every room you went to, you and Spencer would pick out the best piece of art there. It took some debating and long observations, but eventually, you would come to terms with the best one.

As you stepped into one of the final rooms, you gasped in delight. In the middle of the empty room sat a squared off Arabic architecture with marble floors that resembled a ballroom.

“It’s beautiful!” You exclaim happily, slightly skipping to the middle of the area. Spencer slowly trailed behind you, his hands in the pockets of his slacks.

“We are going to dance,” you announce, a wicked grin making its way onto your face. Spencer instantly tensed up.

“Um, there is no music,” he quickly says, trying to find a way out of the fool he’s about to make of himself.

“That’s why my iPhone has a speaker,” you retort, wiggling up your phone.

“Y/N,” he trails off, embarrassed. “I can’t dance, whatsoever.”

“We’re winging it, I’m probably gonna mess up too,” you reassure with a sweet smile. You click play on the song in your phone and wait for its soft tunes to fill up the echoey room before you take Spencer’s hands in yours. Spencer can’t help but laugh at your song choice.

“Sorry that if this seems weird,” you admit sheepishly. “I’m trying to live out a childhood dream over here.”

You were not subtle with the choice in lyrics, you wanted to let Spencer know exactly how you felt through the words that you couldn’t speak - so you let Cinderella do the talking.

“So this is love,” Spencer chuckles shyly. His chest was burning with nervousness as Cinderella’s sweet voice sang lyrics that Spencer wished were coming from you.

You, being the one who studied Prince Charming and Cinderella’s slow dance since you were a kid, allowed you to take initiative in the hand placements and feet movements. That, and the fact that Spencer had no idea what he was doing. You took one of his hands into yours and held them upright. Using your free hand, you took his other hand and placed it on your waist before you brought yours to his shoulder.

“All you have to do is move slowly from side to side, and some little turns,” you instruct. Spencer nods, looking down at his feet to make sure he doesn’t step on you.

After a couple of moments, Spencer felt himself getting the hang of the movements. You were already so far gone into the dance that you allowed yourself to admire Spencer while he tried to get accustomed to the dance. He looked so dreamy to you, the front part of his hair slightly fell over his eyes that were so focused on the ground. You took this as your chance to admire every feature on his beautifully structured face. His jaw, his nose, his eyebrows, his eyes, his cheekbones, his lips - oh my.

He was a real life Prince Charming, the one you have been dreaming of since forever ago.

Spencer looked up at you, catching you in the act. Instead of looking away like you normally would, you kept the eye contact with him, getting lost in his warm brown eyes. Spencer felt all his worries melt away as you looked at him with such adoration and appreciation. This was the look he had always dreamed of getting from you. The two of you just continued to stare at one another, just taking pleasure in each other’s presence. You were so taken with each other that it took a couple seconds after the song ended for you to break apart from him.

“Where is our next stop?” You ask, a wide smile on your lips.

“You will see when we get there,” Spencer answers, internally screaming with happiness at the childlike joy in your eyes.

Spencer wasted no time in taking you to your next location which was just down the street from the museum. You both decided on taking the ten-minute walk instead of taking the car with you, a fresh breath of air. You huddled close to Spencer, linking your arm with his. The air had gotten a little colder, seeing as it was now half past four.

“Did we really spend two hours in the museum?” You laugh in disbelief.

“Actually, we spent about one hour and twenty minutes,” Spencer begins and you giggle. “If you subtract the time we got there, two fifty-five, from the time we left, around four fifteen, you get the final result of one hour and twenty minutes.”

You smiled up at him, loving how he talks when he speaks on something he knows. Oh, how you loved those random facts, statistics and math equations. The remainder of your walk was filled with just that. You purposely brought up subjects that you knew Spencer would have an answer to just so you could hear him ramble on about it.

“Second stop,” Spencer says as he stops in front of the building. You look up and playfully slap his arm when you the sign.

“The bookstore,” you whisper to yourself in awe. “We are going to be in here a while.”

You drag Spencer into the aged bookstore, the familiar scent of books filled your senses and you smiled to yourself at the sense of comfort. You instantly found yourself behind the bookshelves, trailing your finger over the spine of the books. As you pulled one of the books out, you were met with Spencer on the other side. His eyes were focused on the words in front of him, skimming through the pages of the book at the speed of light.

“Hi there stranger,” you say, breaking his concentration.

“Hi,” he responds with an awkward wave which made you let out a small laugh. The typical librarian passed by and made a harsh ‘shh’ sound to the both of you which made you laugh even harder. Spencer looked at you lovingly, absolutely adoring the way your eyes almost shut closed but you could still see the twinkle in them, how your smile stretched from ear to ear in pure joy.

“Okay, I think I have my books picked out,” you say through quick breaths, calming down from your laugh attack.

“Same with me,” Spencer agrees. “I think we should give them a test reading. I want the sun to be down when we arrive at our next location.”

You waited until seven to leave the bookstore. The books you both had picked out were put back on their shelves seeing as you finished a whole one and Spencer finished a handful. You decided to take a few that you didn’t get a chance to finish at the store.

“I’m going to pay or these and then we’ll leave,” you say. You both rush over to the cash register, handing off your books to the lady at the counter.

Once they were done and paid for, you both almost raced out, eager to get to your next destination. Spencer and you took the ten-minute walk again back to the museum where his car was parked.

“We are going to our second to the last destination,” Spencer says with a small frown.

“The night is still young!” You exclaim. “We might be able to add a few more adventures to the night.”

“That’s true,” he smiles at your thoughtfulness.

He drove a fifteen-minute drive to the next location. You recognized it immediately as he pulled up to it, a botanical garden.

“You know me way too well,” you say in astonishment. The botanical garden was huge, the light posts made the building look even more beautiful as it stretched across the night sky. There were a few colorful lights in the pond that reflected onto the plants near them.

When you entered the pathway that took you along the several bushes, trees, and flowers, you and Spencer were isolated from the outside world. You felt like it was just the two of you and you loved every second of it. He was walking alongside you, one hand at his side and the other touching some leaves of a bush. You took the initiative in intertwining your hand with his which caused him to look down at the sudden contact. You froze for a second, not knowing if you made the right move or not - but you know you did when you saw the faint blush on his cheeks and the reassuring squeeze he gave you.

That’s how you two spent the last hour, walking around the garden. Admiring each other, admiring the green filled garden and the fishes in the pond. At one point, you two sat on a bench and talked about life. Future goals and aspirations, funny stories from past experiences, work, and just life in general. You never wanted the moment to last, but when Spencer brought up the time you knew he had something else planned.

“We are going to be late if we don’t leave right now,” he says giddily. He seemed so excited to show you where you were going next and you couldn’t help but feel excited too.

Spencer linked your hand with his once again and lead you out of the garden. The garden was within a park which held different small museums, souvenir shops, attractions, and restaurants. Including your favorite one.

In the direction he was leading you in, you knew for a fact he was taking you there. Once you saw the lit up sign in the distance you let out a small shriek.

“You didn’t!” You say in shock.

“I did, our reservation starts at nine, it’s eight fifty.”

You stop in your tracks which causes Spencer to stop too. He turned around and looked at you in fear and confusion. You stood there for a second before throwing your arms around his neck and pulling him into a tight hug. You felt him tense and then snake his arms around your waist which made your heart flutter.

“Thank you,” you whisper in his ear. “I don’t know how this night can get any better.”

“I have plans on making it even better,” he replies softly.

“We’ll see about that, Dr. Reid,” you giggle, pulling away from the hug.

The restaurant was two stories, and when Spencer checked in with the hostess and lead you up the stairs and into the balcony seating, you nearly fainted. In front of you was a candle lit dinner, it looked straight out of a movie and all you wanted to do was shout from the top of that balcony how much you loved Spencer Reid.

Once you arrived at your seats, Spencer took the chair out for you and pushed it in once you sat down, his manners never faltering.

“Your server will be with you shortly,” the hostess says, handing you both a menu.

“I can’t believe you did this for me,” you say once the hostess leaves.

“I had to,” Spencer smiles. “After what happened yesterday, I couldn’t stand the thought of not doing something about it. I needed to show you how you deserve to be treated.”

“Spencer,” you trail off, feeling your heart swell up.

“Y/N,” Spencer trails off, thinking of his next words. The words he knows will change everything between the two of you forever. “I love you.”

Your mouth fell open, you felt paralyzed from head to toe. Did this man really just tell you he loves you? This man that you have been dreaming about since the first moment you laid eyes on him.

Spencer stands up from his chair and extends his hand out for you to take, which you do. The two of you are now standing in front of each other, your hands in his.

“I never thought I would fall in love so unexpectedly,” he begins. “From the first moment I met you, I knew there was something different about you. Y/N, you mean the absolute world to me, and I don’t care if I sound like a fool. I can’t stand seeing you go on dates with jerks anymore, I can’t stand living another day where I can’t call you mine, I need you, more than you know. You deserve the world, and I promise every day that I am with you, I will give you just that.”

You look up at Spencer, completely dumbfounded by love. You finally react by letting out a breath you didn’t know you were holding with a teary-eyed smile. Your hands were still joined together, like a bride and groom at an alter. Spencer’s eyes flickered from your eyes to your lips and you could hear yourself screaming on the inside, begging him with your eyes to take the hint and kiss you. And he did just that.

The gap between you closed as his lips met yours in a passionate and loving kiss. You let go of his hands and reached up and link them together behind his neck whereas his hands went to linger on your hips. Spencer didn’t need you to repeat the three words because he knew by the look in your eyes and the way you were kissing him gave him all the reassurance he needed.

“Can you say it again?” You breathe out jokingly when you pull away from him. “Seriously.”

The two of you laugh before Spencer nods.

“I love you,” he says and then gives you a kiss. “I love you,” kiss.

“I love you too, Spencer.”

And just like that, time stood still.

Sorry I’m horrible with coming up with ideas! If you do my idea can there be some fluff tho? I would write this on my own but I’m not fully sure I know how to tell it, but if I come up with more I can write my own version too, of that’s ok! And btw I love your writing! Oh and sorry that I ramble.

Summary: Fem!Reader goes to University of Youtube with the gang. Heres a glimpse into what a typical day with the gang is like in class.

A/N: Behold, the literal only gif I could find of the entire gang. This was a cool request! I saw a fic in the markiplier x reader tag similar to this about a youtube university with markiplier and jacksepticeye so if you want to read some more youtube college stuff I’d definitely recommend checking that out! The fic is by @septiceyesweetheart and it’s really good! I love it a lot (may or may not be because I’m also latina and can relate to Bella)! Anyway, back to the fic. No Amy and Kathryn in this one :( because I haven’t gotten the hang of writing them well just yet and the fic was getting waaaaaay too long with them. It’s already pretty long as it is. I really like this idea though and if anyone wants me to make this into an AU sorta thing, feel free to request some more! Hope you enjoy!

Wordcount: 1462

Warnings: I cursed a couple times I think

Thanks for the awesome request! Request some more please!

Home Town

Dean Winchester x Reader

An Anon request from the Drabble Prompt list. Asked for 142 or 143, but I thought they fit well together so I put them both in one.

#142:  “Hold my hand so he gets jealous.” 143:  “Ew, your hand is sweaty.”

HERE is the list of the drabble prompts that people are requesting from.

HERE is the list of the prompts I’ve already done.

When Sam had announced where the new hunt was happening, you had actually considered staying back at the bunker. Never in your life had you turned down a hunt, but hearing that this one was in your home town had you thinking about.

Toughing it out, you had gone along with Sam and Dean, not saying a word as to why you nervously sat in the back of the car, your stomach twisted in knots. After the six hour car ride, Dean had automatically wanted to head to the bar. With a sigh, you had gone along, knowing you weren’t going to survive this trip without some sort of alcohol in your system.

Luckily, Dean had picked a bar at the edge of town, away from where you school, your friends, even your ex lived. As you walked into the shabby bar, you breathed a sigh of relief when you saw nobody you recognized. Quickly ordering a couple of shots, you turned in your seat, listening to Dean talk as you scanned the bar.

“Oh shit.” You muttered, your face paling as you saw your asshole of an ex walking away from the pool table, heading directly your way. He was still as handsome as ever, with his sandy blonde hair, and his stormy greyish blue eyes.

“What is it?” Dean asked, about ready to turn around and see what had gotten you so upset.

“Hold my hand so he gets jealous.” You blurted out, holding your hand out. Without an argument, Dean linked his finger with yours, pulling you tight to his side just as Tanner walked up.

“Y/N, I thought that was you, but I had to double check. Last I remember you said you were never coming back to this town.” He started talking, already annoying you.

“Yeah, well things happen.” You grumbled, as Dean glanced between the two of you.

“Well, it’s my fault actually. I had business in town, and I didn’t want to leave my fiancee at home.” Dean played along easily, which you were grateful. The two of you were nothing more than friends, even though you wished to be much more.

“Fiancee?” Tanner asked. “And here I was, hoping you were going to try to heat things back up with me. We were good, weren’t we?”

“No, we weren’t.” You argued. “Especially when I walked in on you with your best friend, Brian.”

“Hey, don’t blame a man for swinging both ways!” He exclaimed, as Dean coughed. You knew Dean was trying to hold back a laugh.

“I don’t. But I do blame you for not being faithful. So goodbye Tanner.” You said, tugging Dean’s hand, and pulling him from his seat. Walking out of the bar, you quickly pulled your hand from Dean’s.  “Ew, your hand is sweaty.”

“Hey!” He argued. “It’s not my fault that I got nervous when the girl of my dreams finally shows me some sort of affection. Even if it was only to make an ex mad.”

Shocked, you could do nothing but stare at him. “What did you just say?”

Rubbing the toe of his boot in the gravel, he gazed up at you, his green eyes shining in the parking lot lights. “I said that I care about you! I’ve just been too chicken to actually say something.”

“Maybe coming back to my hometown was a good thing after all.” You muttered, grabbing his black t-shirt and pulling him against you, your lips connecting with his.

A Deal With The Queen

A/N: This story was an idea @roxy-davenport and I came up after we saw a post on our dashes. It asked something along the lines of “If someone were to summon you what five things would they put in a pentagram.” Cue the story.

You impatiently paced the cramped office in the Bronx, waiting for the portly man sitting behind the desk who was taking an unnecessarily long time to look over the contract he was going to be signing with lawyer. With each passing minute, you mentally debated if you wanted to just blast his head clear off his body for taking so long or force his hand to read faster.

I need some damn excitement in my life.’ You thought as the man’s pen scratched yet another alteration into the contract. You rolled your eyes as you read his mind and forced yourself not to let out a throaty scoff. The heels of your knee high black boots raked the floor with each step while you purposely scuffed black trails across the old grainy wood. Without any sort of warning, the room around you quaked. The two men looked up at you with a hint of fear in their eyes.

“Sorry boys. Gonna have to take this.” Despite being faced with the opportunity to leave one of the most boring meetings in the world, you were still slightly agitated at being summoned. With a snap of your fingers, you vanished from the room and found yourself in the center of a barn standing before two very striking gentlemen. A sickening smile crossed your face as you appraised them and you blinked your eyes red for a moment while you began to slowly walk in a circle around them.

Also there is a soundtrack/playlist for this fic! If you enjoy listening and reading (or, if you just want to have a g list of songs) you can find it here !

disclaimer: All mentions of the university in this fic are purely pulled from my ass— I don’t claim to know anything on a deep, spiritual level about university clubs, classes or frat parties. Side characters, that aren’t specifically Bangtan Members™, are all made up and therefor fictional .

Let us fill the Gruvia tag with some positivity! What are your top 5 Gruvia moments? :)

Good idea! ^^

1) Chapter 416 boob hug. No matter what’s come after, the excitement and the enjoyment, even years afterward, are still such fond memories for me. It was just such a surprise when it happened, even though we had been waiting months for Gray and Juvia to reunite. I knew we would get something good, but I never really thought it would truly be that. I had begun writing a fic at the time that had Gray and Juvia in that exact same kind of hug for the same kind of reason, so my wishes literally came true with that moment. Juvia was truly going to walk away from Gray forever, but he STOPPED her. He HUGGED her. He sought her for comfort. And in that moment, as Juvia held him to her, that ice mage, who had been cold for so long, felt warm. My HEART. ;_; Plus, it’s always nice to see Gruvia physical contact hee. And it was just a nice cap to a really great arc, as well. And IMO they have been practically canon since this moment. If the series had ended there it would have been implied canon.

2) 499 Gray and Juvia sacrifice themselves for each other. I wanted Juvia to “die” since the end of the GMG arc. I thought it was important for their storyline, so I thought it needed to happen. BUT, I never imagined Gray would sacrifice himself at the same time. It’s an incredibly powerful thing in Japanese literature for lovers to suicide together. And Gray and Juvia did it out of a deep love for each other. As Gray corrected himself, “I didn’t want to hurt a friend, NO, I didn’t want to ever hurt YOU.” Juvia said Gray’s words made her happy for a reason. Gray right then and there told her she was so much more than just a friend to him. Also, this is the only scene that has every made me cry while reading FT. Juvia’s parting words in Gray’s mind did that to me. Those pages were beautiful. Plus, I love all the parallels between Juvia and Ur here. And I STILL think Gray totally kissed her when she was dying in his arms. So, I hope that is confirmed one day. *-*

3) Gruvia Unison Raid. The rest of these were really hard to choose between and put in any kind of order. So I’m going simply by how surprised and excited I was when I read them. And the Unison Raid was super exciting and fun at the time. Especially in fandom since I was still pretty new to the FT fandom then and could just enjoy all the art and colorings, and happiness about it. It was the unison raid of LOVE after all. ^-^ And they had those beautiful color pages, and the looks and smiles they gave each other, and the hand holding, and the team work, and it was just such a happy and enjoyable development! And Chelia (and perhaps Lyon lol) was added on the growing list of in-story Gruvia shippers lmao!

4) I’m here with you. I got spoiled on this one, so it wasn’t a surprise to me when I read it, but it was still such an amazing moment. I love that Gray took Juvia’s hand to comfort her. I love that they were riding so close together, and Juvia had her arms around Gray. I loved that Juvia remained serious and solemn even after Gray consoled her and said those important words. And I loved the foreshadowing of what was to come. It guaranteed that both Gray and Juvia would somehow be involved with this mysterious Silver character, and much angst would follow. ^-^

5) Ok, I’m going to cheat now, because I can’t choose lmao. 453, Gray thinking about Juvia during the Silver fight, the sensory link, and Gray saving Juvia from Ultear are all such important moments to me for different reasons.

453 obviously had Gray being a lot more honest and straightforward with Juvia than ever before. He was all cute and flirty when offering her the candy bar. He admitted that he was grateful to have her, always by his side. And he broached the subject of Juvia’s feelings all on his own, by promising to give her an answer. That in itself, was simply a reinforcement of what I personally already thought was obvious from 416. That Gray’s feelings for Juvia were mutual, otherwise there would have been no point of giving her a new answer. It was just such a big deal, and it gave us something to look forward to for their development in the current arc, while also casting a giant angst shadow over their heads. So, it was exciting.

Gray thinking about Juvia during his Silver fight was AMAZING. I had read the spoilers at the time, and it has said Gray had pictured all of his friends, and Ur, and Juvia, etc.. And I thought, oh well at least he thought of her. BUT, I had no idea until we got the chapter, that she had taken up such a blatantly large part of Gray’s thoughts! And it was a whole new panel, too, unlike all the others which were repeats. And she looked so beautiful and was calling his name so lovingly. And it was just wonderful to have it confirmed how Gray REALLy thinks of Juvia. Not some annoying, inconvenience, but a beautiful girl who’s affections and presence he treasures. ;_;

The Sensory link during the Meredy fight needs to be mentioned, because it was when I a) became a huge Juvia fan because she was so badass, and b) when I realized that Gruvia would one day be canon. And that thought excited me immensely, because I had never considered the possibility before. Juvia’s feelings always came off as just a running gag to me at the time. And yet here the author was, reinforcing Juvia’s feelings by reminding us that yes, she truly LOVES Gray. And that Juvia as a character, would not be tortured like this, if her feelings wouldn’t one day be reciprocated by Gray. And the idea of their relationship being developed to that point thrilled me. So it was a combination of things that just made this fight so great!

And finally Gray saving Juvia from Ultear. Again, it reinforced my new love for this ship. When Ultear was about to slice Juvia’s head off, while saying that doing so would be taking away Gray’s future, and then Gray swooped in and saved her in such an epic way? LOVE. Because it was Gray’s side to match Juvia’s earlier fight. And Gray looked so pissed, and he was holding Juvia so tenderly, it was a lovely panel. *-* Even Juvia’s little subconscious smile when Gray said he wants to live with his comrades was again that parallel to Juvia’s earlier fight with Meredy. ^-^

*honorable mention* Juvia’s reveal and recollections of her and Gray living together during the Avatar arc. That was so huge. They LIVED together. 6 MONTHS. To the point that Juvia caught Gray’s stripping habit. Domestic Gruvia! Training, eating and working together! They had a home and a life together! Just wow. ;_;

Online Plus Size Shopping Guide for Super Cute Clothes

Notes: Everything contained herein is based on my own personal shopping experiences, so YMMV. No one retailer is perfect for plus size shopping, and not everyone’s taste aligns with mine, so please bear this in mind. Right now, I am about a US size 16/18 or XL/2X depending on the retailer, but I have bought online up to about a US 20. I have very chubby arms, but my bust and waist are a lot smaller than my hips, so I tend to have some trouble finding things that fit all over. Most retailers usually have a plus cut, so there shouldn’t be a lot of discrepancy from my experiences for sizes above US 22. I know this will not be all-inclusive, so please feel free to add on whatever you think is helpful, because I know so many plus size shoppers really, really struggle, so share your experiences and advice.

Notes pt 2: I don’t really shop at B&M plus size retailers (like Lane Bryant, Torrid, Catherine’s, etc.) but I did work at Avenue for a while, so I will just leave those retailers out. Again, if you have a lot of experience with a particular plus size B&M retailer, join in the conversation and add whatever you can that will help people shopping online or in-store. The same goes for department stores, I do not ever shop in department stores, so I have no experiences to add there.

Notes pt 3: If you are shopping exclusively online, please try to get measurements so that you can compare that to size charts. Remember, there is no standardization in sizing, and every company sizes a little differently, so size charts are your friend. Plus, if you really fall in love with an item, you could tell from the size chart if it could be altered to fit if you bought a size up or something. (I know this is not an option for everyone, but it does at least give the option for some.)

Notes pt 4: I won’t link to my Ebates account because I am not trying to make money off of anyone, but if you don’t have it, SIGN UP NOW. It is so easy to use, and you get money back for shopping. I’ll note below which of these stores offers Ebates rewards.

My go-tos:

-ModCloth. They offer sizes up to 4x, but their house brand tends to be cut about a size larger. They have a decent size chart that allows you to compare your own measurements. They also have a customer service live chat, and if you tell them what item you’re looking at, they can almost always get measurements for it so you can compare. (I have done this several times, and it absolutely makes the shopping process a lot easier.) There are lots of reviews and outfit photos from other shoppers, which also really helps if you’re on the fence about something. They offer a lot of different styles, leaning toward kitschy/cutesty/retro/vintage-inspired offerings. Shipping is moderate, it usually takes about 10 days if you choose the free shipping option (if you qualify.) BEST FOR: Unique dresses and a-line skirts. PRICE RANGE: moderate, but quality is usually good. Most items will be between $40-$75, but it varies; items in the sale section can be anywhere from about 30% to 60% off, so you can get some GREAT deals in the sale section. SIZE RANGE: XS-4X. Does not offer Ebates rewards.

-eShakti. CUSTOM SIZING. Let me repeat: they do custom sizing for their pieces. Plus, if you don’t like the sleeves, neckline, embroidery, pockets (you heathen!), etc, you can alter. They have casual and special occasion dresses and separates, all of which you can custom size. I can’t emphasize this enough. If you’re looking for something for a special event, or if you’re like me and a different size on top and bottom, this is your best friend. They do charge a fee for customization, but it is worth it since it’s cheaper than alteration. Sign up for their email list, they often do some good sales where you can get a good deal. There’s a special discount for shopping on mobile, too. They do offer free returns as well. NOTE: dresses are made as they are ordered, so if you need it for a certain event or date, order as early as you can, as it can take about 15 days to receive your items. BEST FOR: workwear, special occasion dresses, jersey dresses for every day. PRICE RAGE: the higher end of moderate, but the dresses are custom made when you order and the quality is outstanding. Without a discount code, an uncustomized dress is about $45-$70. SIZE RANGE: 0 to 36W. Yes, you read that right. And you can customize ANY size. Does not offer Ebates rewards.

-Target.com. I know a lot of the stuff Target sells online in its plus section is bullshit, but for basics, you can’t go wrong. The prices are good, and the quality of the Merona t-shirts and cardigans is excellent for what you’re paying. The Who What Wear line is a lot more fashionable and great to wear to work, but be aware that everything runs about a size smaller. I do not care for the Ava and Viv line, and I think I have only ever bought one pair of shorts from that line, which I promptly returned. If you like Ava and Viv good on you, it just doesn’t do it for me. You can return in-store if you buy something online, and if you have the Target RedCard, you get 5% off and free shipping on items from the website. It generally takes about 5-7 business days for a package to come to me. BEST FOR: basics like cardigans and t-shirts; Who What Wear for work, but pay close attention to sizing. PRICE RANGE: low, especially if you pay close attention to sales and use the RedCard discount. Most items average between $10 and $30 USD. SIZE RANGE: sizing for Ava and Viv and Merona plus is X-4X (translating, according to the website, to roughly 14W to 30W.) Sizing for Who What Wear is X-4X (where an X is probably about a straight-size 12/14, 1X is about 14W, and going up from there. All items I have from WWW are sized smaller than the rest of the plus clothing at Target.) Does offer Ebates rewards. *IMPORTANT EDIT: I just read that the Victoria Beckham line for Target will go up to size 3x, but odds are that the sizing will be more in line with WWW rather than Ava and Viv.*

-BooHoo. BooHoo is an online retailer based in the UK, so make sure that you choose USD from the drop down at the top of the page, because when you do, it also converts the sizing. They offer some workwear, but most of their stuff trends toward casual or clubwear. If you want something on the sexier side, BooHoo has you covered. In my mind they’re kind the UK answer to Forever 21, but I think most of their stuff is cuter. Be careful, though, because sometimes the quality isn’t quite what you’d expect. That said, they do a TON of good sales, it is quite easy to get many things from their site for not a lot of money. Like F21, they too have cute, cheap, trendy accessories as well. Even coming from overseas, they ship very fast, and I haven’t ever waited too long for a package from them. BEST FOR: trendy pieces, experimenting with your look, clothes for going out and partying down. PRICE RANGE: comparable to Forever 21, so pretty low, with some nicer items going into moderate, but they do offer a lot of codes. SIZE RANGE: US 12-24. (The dresses I have bought from there seem pretty true to size, but I have not bought any bottoms, so I can’t speak to their pants sizing.) Does offer Ebates rewards.

-ASOS. To me, ASOS is BooHoo’s grown up, more chic older sister. They have an amazing variety, from workwear to club wear to casual to formal. If your style is more eclectic or punky, you will definitely find something you like here, but even if you trend super feminine, you will not be at a loss. They also have a MEN’S PLUS SIZE section, which I only recently discovered. I have not bought anything from this portion of the site, but even knowing that it exists is helpful, and it looks like they offer staples, work wear, and more trendy pieces there as well. Their accessories/shoes/beauty sections are off the hook too, seriously; their accessories are amazing. They also have basics (like leggings or tshirts) in multi-packs, so you can save even more and stock up. Sizing can be hit or miss, since they carry a lot of different brands (including some BooHoo items!!) but most items I have bought have been true to the size chart that they provide. They do offer good codes from time to time. Items ship from the UK, and it takes about 1.5 to 2 weeks to reach the West Coast of the US. BEST FOR: a wide variety to choose from, pretty dresses, fashionable casual wear. PRICE RANGE: moderate to high, depending on the item and the occasion. They have good codes sometimes, and a great sale section. Items can range anywhere from $20 to $200. SIZE RANGE: for Women’s Curve & Plus it’s 14-26, but sizing can vary between brands. For Men’s Plus Size, it is XL-XXXL (they offer measurements on the site, so you can convert. I know jack all about men’s sizing, so I can’t really speak to how helpful this is, but if someone knows more, please let me know.) Does offer Ebates rewards.

Love/hate category (AKA I don’t often shop there, but if I see something I like I will buy it):

-Forever 21. We all know this one, and probably a lot of us hate it a little bit too. I have some awesome things from F21 that I really enjoy, but I have gotten some stuff from there that I straight up hate. Also, their Plus section is ridiculously priced compared to the rest of the site. Like if you advertise $2 camis, make the fucking Plus ones $2 too. They do make some cute stuff, and if you’re familiar with how their sizing works, you can probably get pretty lucky and score some cute things. With how popular the website is, you do have to pull the trigger pretty quickly, or you might miss out. A lot of cute stuff goes out of stock and never comes back. Of course, there’s also the accessories and the beauty sections, so you can find cute stuff to pile into your cart to meet the free shipping minimum. You can return in store if you buy online, but for me at least, going into a Forever 21 store is a very trying experience in every single way. Sometimes the sizing is way off, so read reviews if you can; I find that the sizing is especially weird for the “deals” items that tend to be very inexpensive. Also, the non-stretchy tops just aren’t made for fat arms. PRICE RANGE: low to moderate. Items are anywhere from about $10 to $40. BEST FOR: dresses and skirts, shirts with lots of words on them. SIZE RANGE: 1X-4X. Does offer Ebates rewards.

-Simply Be. They have some cute shit, but I don’t often find things there that I need. They have a lot of casual and workwear, and some pretty dresses. I have found that the sizing is pretty good, but always check the size chart as this is another UK brand. They really push their store credit card, which does have some rewards, but also a super high APR. (They took a line out of the Avenue/Torrid/Lane Bryant/Catherine’s book by trying to create customer loyalty with the card. I won’t get into a rant here, but unless you plan on shopping ONLY at that one store, then don’t get the card.) PRICE RANGE: moderate to high. Items are in the $40 to $100 range. BEST FOR: I can’t really say since I haven’t shopped here a ton. SIZE RANGE: 6 to 28. Does offer Ebates rewards.

-Eloquii. They make beautiful clothes, but every time I work up the nerve to buy something, it is sold out. They’re like a cooler, more fashion-forward version of Lane Bryant in my mind. They do a lot of really gorgeous workwear, but some more casual pieces as well. They’re known for their Kady cigarette pants, which they offer in a variety of colors and patterns. In my opinion, they’re a lot more daring with their cuts than a lot of other plus retailers, and now they offer Plus Petite and Viola Fit (which is for bodies like mine that are smaller on top with wider hips.)Their prices are high, but they offer a lot of different sales and they usually have a pretty good sale section as well. PRICE RANGE: moderate to high, depending on if there is a sale. BEST FOR: workwear, vibrant colors, pretty dresses that are unique. SIZE RANGE: 14-28 in Original, Petite, and Viola. Does offer Ebates rewards.

ragstocadillacs  asked:

What are some of the best Kennedy documents/films/biographies? I'd really love to learn more about the clan 😊

Hi there ! Sorry for my (very) late reply, I’m the worst - I see a message and then I forget all about it :(

Okay so here’s a list of my favorite stuff (**will update) :

Biographies

- The Joan Kennedy Story : Living with the Kennedys, by Marcia Chellis (1985) : Marcia was Joan’s personal assistant for 2-3 years, starting in 1979. They went through the 1980 presidential campaign together. I know Joan felt betrayed by the book saying : “I tried to talk her out of it three years ago when she told me the notes she took on the 1980 campaign would be used in a book. I told her I felt so betrayed. I think it’s a real breach of confidentiality” - but I gotta say, it’s really great if you want to feel like an insider. It’s a must-read, in my opinion. But I don’t agree with how she did all of this - Joan was her friend and she trusted her but she ended up betraying her for money… yeah.
- Jackie, Ethel, Joan : The Women of Camelot, by J. Randy Taraborrelli (2000) : “Three women who married into America’s royal family and became forever linked in legend. Set against the panorama of explosive American history, this unique story offers a rarely-seen look at the relationship shared among the three women – during the Camelot years and beyond. Whether dealing with their husbands’ blatant infidelities, stumping for their many political campaigns, touring the world to promote their family’s legacy, raising their children, or confronting death, the Kennedy wives did it all with grace, style and dignity”
- The Kennedy Women : The Saga of an American Family, by Laurence Leamer (1994). 800-page book with rather tiny writing, but it goes back to the Kennedy’s ancestors and talks about every single Kennedy woman.
- After Camelot : A Personal History of the Kennedy Family – 1968 to the Present, by J. Randy Taraborrelli (2012) : Taraborrelli’s books tend to be a bit on the gossipy side, but I kinda like his style lol plus he does A LOT of research for his books (the source notes are always like, 40 pages long). The book is divided into the following parts : The lengthy an detailed tome is divided into the following parts: Jackie, Eunice, Sarge, Ted, Ethel, Jackie/Ari/The Lawfords, Sargent Tries Again, The Third Generation In Trouble, Poor Ari, Rosemary and Rose, Shriver for President, Ted’s 1980 campaign, David’s Story, Kennedy Upheaval, Caroline/John/Maurice, William Kennedy Smith and the Palm Beach Scandal, Kennedy Wives Old and New, Jackie: Her Final Years, John and Carolyn, Michael’s Story, A Peaceful Time, Camelot Loses its Prince, Transitions, and Looking Ahead.
- Peter Lawford : The Man Who Kept the secrets, by James Spada (1991). (See the review that I made about a week ago).
- Joan : The Reluctant Kennedy, by Lester David (1974) : It’s really interesting because he interviewed her a lot for it and you can learn about her childhood, her girlhood, etc. It’s really the only book that is strictly dedicated to her (well Marcia Chellis’ book kinda is too, but it’s more like a tell all, not a biography and it only talks about Joan’s life from 1979 to 1983). The only thing is that since the book was published in the 70s, it doesn’t cover the rest of Joan’s life.
- The Other Mrs. Kennedy : Ethel Skakel Kennedy - An American Drama of Power, Privilege, and Politics, by Jerry Oppenheimer (1994). I didn’t think I’d be into this book at first, since I’ve never been particularly interested in Ethel. But it really is a page turner.
- The Last Brother, by Joe McGinnis (1993). Excellent book about Ted. I really enjoyed the fact that there is no ass kissing at all (compared to the ‘Last Lion’, published by the Boston Globe). It really reveals the dysfunctionality of the family. I also like how he analyzes Ted, he’s very interesting, psychologically-speaking, cause he was trapped from the beginning: someone (…Joe Kennedy) chose a life path for him and that was it. The Washington Post trashed the book but don’t listen to them lol
- The Kennedy Curse, by Edward Klein. (2003)

Documentaries/Movies/Series

- The Kennedys (2011). Watch here : http://www.watchfree.to/watch-27654b-The-Kennedys-tv-show-online-free-putlocker.html#close-modal - I’m currently rewatching it actually. It’s 8 episodes and it starts with JFK’s election and ends with JFK’s assassination. Greg Kinnear is excellent as JFK, and so is Barry Pepper as Bobby. As for Katie Holmes, sometimes she’s good and sometimes it’s a bit cringy (like when she tries to imitate Jackie’s soft, breathy voice). The new series, The Kennedys : After Camelot (which covers from 1964 to the 1990s I believe), based on J. Randy Taraborrelli’s book, will start in April on Reelz

-The JFK collection– 8 mini movies by the History channel (2013). Disc One contains three films. “JFK: A Personal Story Part 1”, JFK: A Personal Story Part 2 and “Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis”. Disc Two contains four films “John F. Kennedy, Jr.: The Death of an American Prince”, “Joseph Kennedy, Sr.: Father of an American Dynasty”,“Robert F. Kennedy: His Many Sides” and “Ted Kennedy: Tragedy, Scandal, and Redemption” is the story of the life of the youngest Kennedy son, his scandals, and his life in politics. Disc Three contains the last film of the series, “JFK: Three Shots that Changed America.” **I’m afraid you’ll have to buy it, but I got it for pretty cheap on Ebay

- The Lost Kennedy Home Movies (2011).

Tsukista TV Ep 6 Summary Notes

This last episode of Tsukista TV focused on Tomotsune Yuuki, who plays Shun, and Doi Kazumi, who plays Kai. (I can’t help but notice that Blue Moon beer logo on the side of the bar in the above screencap lol). These Tsukista TV episodes were a lot of fun to watch, and it gave us more insight into the actors’ lives and personalities. Also, the Tsukiusa Taisou will be stuck in my head forever… I still haven’t written anything for the first episode yet, but that should be posted next week. I’ll put links to all 6 of my episode posts on my Scans/Translations/Misc. page once I’m finished. Thanks for reading!
