Ok, ok, so I recently went to see the movie and let me tell you something… it’s more than just a movie, es una obra de arte.

I’m not joking, really, my expectations went beyond what I thought. It was amazing in every way. Well, maybe I’m gonna make some spoilers, but I found myself in need of telling you my experience as a Mexican point of view.

Because yes, I’m proudly Mexican.

  • 1. Estás muy flaco, ¡come más!

This is funny. 

In each family, at least in mine, it is normal that your grandmother wants to feed you because, according to her, you are very thin. And this reminded me a lot of my grandmother, whom I sweetly called Yaya. And yes, she is a strong, very determined woman who always fills my plate with lots of food. 

But my Yaya’s food is always the best.

  • 2. El maravilloso ambiente

There was no time to take the eyes off every scene, every color, every sound, literally. In the land of the living, the colors were relatively balanced, since it is a village, when dusk comes, which illuminates each house in a beautiful orange color. The colorful cemeteries and ofrendas captivated me greatly, for the passion with which we adorn the tombs of our departed is more than a tradition; is a connection that even Death itself can never take away.

  • 3. ¡Música maestro!

My God, I can’t believe Disney has started its own theme with Mariachi music. 

AY, AY, AY!!

That. was. Phenomenal. 

The rest of the film, when I started to hear the voices of each character singing, dancing or even playing guitar, I almost felt like jumping and singing, clapping and dancing. If anything you must be sure, is that when a Mexican hears that kind of music, mariachi, trumpets, violins, the shoe, the drums, gives him an infinite desire to be celebrating forever.

  • 4. La Chancla

La abuelita threatening everyone with la chancla. 

That’s typical of mexican family. No, seriously. Once my Yaya threw me la chancla voladora when I was little and I was running and they had yelled at me to stop. That could not be missing!

If you have never been threatened with la chancla, or much less have hit you with it, trust me, as a mexican you had no childhood.

  • 5. La Llorona

Originally, the song La Llorona is sung by Chavela Vargas. If you have never heard of it, I strongly recommend that you do so. That was totally amazing!

Miguel’s great-great-grandmother sang it with such sentiment made me shed tears, because I’ve heard it since I was a little girl. My grandmother sometimes sings it when she’s cooking.

  • 7. Alebrijes

Actually, this was a very original idea that I loved. 

Alebrijes are imaginary beings made up of physiognomic elements of different animals, a combination of several animals, not only fantastic but also real.
They’re handicrafts made with the technique of the cartonería, that they are painted with joyful colors and vibrant.

Alebrijes are one of the many wonders of Mexican art and a pride and the hallmark of Oaxaca. Having a alebrije or a collection of them at home is considered good luck and it is said that happiness will accompany anyone who owns one of these works of art. In addition, owning a alebrije is to possess the best of Mexican art, so vast, so colorful, so full of life and a beauty recognized internationally.

  • 8. La Familia es primero

Even though The Book of Life is also another of my favorite movies, something made me even love more Coco than this.

It may sound a little… cliché, but for me the family has always been the most important thing. In fact, I quite identified with Miguel’s family. I could see in my own flesh not only my grandmother, but my uncles, my cousins and my other relatives. We don’t live in one house, we live in different places.

Traditionally my grandfathers are doctors, and they wanted my mother to be a doctor, but she preferred to study theater just as my father studied music. And there could be no doubt that her own daughter would also want to be an artist.

When I first went to Europe to visit the Universities, my grandmother, who repudiated the idea of being an artist, came to me one day and said to me: “It’s your life, you decide what you want and what you choose will be always good for me.”

The love of the family is so different and so unique, that to a certain point it made me realize that I do not need love of a couple if I have people that I can always talk to and who can support me too.

  • 9. Recuérdame

This song was definitely the best of the best. Full of feelings, full of dedication, I should applaud the effort for composers, I haven’t had the privilege of hearing it in English, but I think you should also listen to it in Spanish, and I say it because the song sounds infinitely cool. and with the voice of the characters, made my skin prickly and shed more tears.

  • 10. Mama Coco

This, without a doubt, is my favorite. The entire character of mama Coco.

She may not appear more than some scenes from the entire film, but she is a very important and very captivating character. The relationship she has with Miguel is very special, an old mind woman and a big-hearted young man, the love of grandparents or great-grandparents is so strong and has no limits…

I have lived with my great-grandparents since I was two years old, and I loved them with all my heart just like them to me.

They are no longer with me…

But that does not mean that I have forgotten them. I remember them every day, every moment, when I least expect it, I sometimes dream about them. Sometimes I ask my grandparents how they were as young people, and I could imagine their lives in black and white films, where they wore dresses and suits.

The times of my great-grandfathers were hard, but were also beautiful, they enjoyed their entire life and were happy. Mama Coco was able to leave the world knowing that her father loved her and sang for the last time. Recuérdame with her great-grandchild.

What a beautiful scene, so simple, so lovely, that speaks for much.

Believe it or not, I loved Coco more than The Book of Life.

But I don’t think there has to be some anger cause somehow they seem to be something in como. For God’s sake, they do NOT seem at all, at least of the plot. 

Is more than obvious that the producers and the cast made a mega effort to make the film an original work, and yes, it is original, cause there were so many unexpected twists, plus that, again, made me cry.

Don’t hate Coco, really, the movie is worth seeing, and it is such a beautiful and so cute way of putting the family theme. 

The Book of Life talked about fear in being yourself: there is nothing wrong of being yourself and always follow your heart, while Coco talks about that it is okay to follow your dreams, but also think about your family, think about something that goes more beyond your expectations, but what you choose will always have the support of your family.

Two films focusing on Mexico, focusing on El Dia de los Muertos, two films that use direct themes, but that somehow made me realize what Life is like.

And if the pretentious title didn’t frighten you away, or cause you to immediately unfollow / block me, I offer some thoughts:

Following the cues left by the hot mess s4, it’s reasonable to assert the following (which has been asserted just about non-stop since each of the episodes aired; I am not pretending to be original here):

  • s4 is fucky in a way that seems to call attention to its own fuckyness, especially if you take events and themes of the previous series as guidelines for what to expect / how things work in the world of Sherlock. (A ton of people have done a ton of work on this, but thanks to @antisocial-otaku​ for making it clear how frickin obvious this pattern is, here.)

As much as recent arg developments have been A Ride, I really think we’ve missed the obvious, because it wasn’t nearly as much of a challenge as people were looking for / as the fandom genius hive brain is capable of meeting. I think we’ve been looking too hard.

The puzzle, the thing we are supposed to figure out, is s4 itself. The game is simply this: we are invited to have discernment with regard to what is and what is not possible in the world of BBC Sherlock, and to conclude, as most people did, that much of s4 is, indeed, not compatible with the world of Sherlock. The truth of the narrative is in the subtext, as almost everyone here has argued.

The narrative of s4 is, for the most part, really hard to get hold of, and full of content that blatantly works against everything the show has tried to set up so far. As much as I appreciate attempts to make sense of s4 as is, my mind, like a lot of people’s, recoils when asked to consider (for example) that the people who wrote this:

You’ve all seen the evidence. You’ve all watched The Final Problem and thought–what the hell is this? 

People in this fandom were crying foul from the moment TST ended. I think we were already playing the arg then (if such a thing exists), and we kept playing it all through s4, because we were thinking critically about the episodes, and questioning the reality status of the story with which we were presented.

Up until recently, I would have said, meh, maybe this apparent lack of skill on the part of the showrunners was deliberate, maybe it wasn’t. Maybe they just threw in a ton of excess detail (like Mr. Glowy Skull) because why not? I am not very big on writerly intention. The text I’m presented with, I feel free to interpret however I wish, and this, to me, is the point of s4. It undoes itself. It undoes the text of series 1-3. It invites critique in a whole new way. Regardless of what does or does not happen next, I will always choose to question this narrative, to read against the text, because that reading is more interesting and less infuriating. s4, like mofftiss, lies. 

But.

The part that makes me think the arg is happening right in front of us, and it’s still live:

WHY NOW?

I could see, maybe, that video flying as an s4 preview, but we have it released here, now, after…all that, when we know that the picture being presented in it is nowhere near the reality that we got in the narrative.

I don’t want to say it’s a sign. I don’t know, man. I’m tired. We’re all tired. But that video certainly did invite a renewal of the wtf-was-that outrage of s4, didn’t it?

The fourth wall, in my opinion, has already been broken. 

The show has been teaching us how to observe, and not just see, to think critically, and to look for solutions to puzzles, since the beginning. Now it’s turning the function of detective over to us. 

Just like the #sherlocklive game was designed to allow us to practice our puzzle solving on a small scale, so is s4. The entire narrative invites us to sit up, take notice, and say, come on, that can’t be how it really happened.

I’m still not going to predict the future here. The show has broken the fourth wall before, and paid off careful observation, via the “1895″ clues. It might be doing that with the “March 8″ billboard thing. It might not. When I say that the narrative is unfinished, I mean exactly that–it lacks an ending (much like my languishing WiPs…sorry about those, btw). What will happen next? Who knows? None of us. Signs (that’s literal, billboard-type signs) point to something more. 

BUT IS IT ART?

So: we have been presented with not one, but two false narratives. If mofftiss finish their damn story, and offer some sort of explanation for all the fuckery of s4, then we’ll have been told a bunch of lies in-story, about “what happened” to John and Sherlock, and a bunch of extratextual lies, about s4 being finished after three episodes. 

I will always assert, regardless of what happens next, that the in-story lies are there, and believing the textual level of the narrative makes less sense / is less happy making than believing that the story lies. As for the bigger lie, about the length of s4 / the end of this narrative–we’ll see. 

It’s a peculiar choice, this, as modern storytelling goes. Rather than just, you know, tell the story they wanted to tell, about a detective and his blogger, they’re really going the long way round. If the “s4 is fake” reading is confirmed, and there is a plan in place, it’s show-offy. It’s audacious. It’s gaslighting the audience to make a point. It’s putting us through an experience–the textual level content of s4–and asking us to believe something contrary to that experience. 

It’s not…enjoyable? Like with everything else, I think I’ll be left questioning why this way, and not some other way. It is, potentially, fascinating. 

If this is what we think it is, we’ve been playing all along, without even trying.

“We’re going to have another sister.”


Ivar looks at his daughter, curled up against his side. Her wooden runestones are scattered in front of them in the mud, a jumble of symbols he knows but cannot interpret. He does not have his late mother’s gift. Inga does.


“Do the runes tell you that?” He asks, tucking the furs around the sleeping little one in his arms carefully. Katla makes a soft cooing noise, but does not wake. She is barely 2 winters old, and sleep comes easy. 


“I dreamt it,” Inga informs him, gathering the runes back up in her leather pouch. “Just last night. These runes are telling me we will have good fishing this year. You should tell the fishermen, they will be happy.”


Ivar cannot help but laugh softly. Inga may only be a child of 8 winters, but she is heavy with the gift of the seer. It makes her speak like a grown woman. His little old woman, he calls her. She hates it.


“I wish I could go in,” Jorunn sighs, looking wistfully behind her at the Great Hall. “I want to help!”


“Maybe next time, min elske,” Ivar says, trying pointedly to ignore the pout Jorunn sends his way. “Your mother did not want you to see, in case it was hard, like with Katla.”


“I am a big girl,” his healer child grumbles, and Ivar laughs again. The sound never fails to feel foreign, even after all these happy years.


“Papa! Eidunn refuses to give me back my axe!”


His oldest two children barrel towards him, clothes muddy and cheeks red from the chilly spring wind. Eidunn is grinning widely, Alfdis looks distraught.


“I won it fair. I knocked her down and took it while she tried to catch her breath,” Eidunn skids to a halt in front of him. “She did not keep her shield up.”


“Good work, Eidunn,” Ivar praises his flourishing shieldmaiden, and she practically vibrates with pride. “Alfdis, what have I told you about keeping your shield up? You will have your head taken off, and who will then be Queen after me?”


His eldest hangs her head in shame. “I know, Papa. Uncle Hvitserk has been yelling at me all morning. I will do better, I swear to Thor!”


“You must, and he will hold you to that,” Ivar’s voice is stern. His wife tells him he is too firm with his heir. He tells her she needs to be ready. The world does not accept soft rulers, and he will not have a daughter of his be unprepared. “Eidunn will keep your axe until you can win it back.”


“Yes, Papa,” her voice is somber, defeated. His heart gives a little pang. He used to be so much harder, he thinks. Then he had daughters, and he feels as soft and tender as freshly spun wool.


“Come here, ducklings,” he commands, and all his treasures flock to him like birds to a tree. “Shall we have a story while we wait?”


“Oh yes!” They all scramble to sit as close to him as possible. Katla stirs and opens her eyes, but does not move, content to listen from her warm cocoon. He begins one of their favourite tales: How the Serpent Defeated the Bear and the Dogs and Won Back His Kingdom. 


He is only halfway through when the doors to the Hall burst open behind him. His children jump up, excitement spreading on their eager young faces. His heart pounds suddenly in his chest. 


“Well? Out with it!”


“King Ivar, all is well,” the slave girl says breathlessly. “The Queen is requesting your presence.”


His daughters cheer; he allows himself a smile. He motions for Alfdis to take Katla while he grabs his crutches and stands. His girls rush ahead of him into the Hall, shrieking and laughing. 


He will admit his wife looks exhausted (childbearing is hard work, he does not envy her), but she greets him with a loving smile as their bed is overrun with happy daughters. 


“Jora will bring the baby back in a moment,” she says as he sits down beside her. He smooths her damp hair back from her forehead, leaning in to press his lips reverently to the smooth skin. Another birth, another day she lives. The gods smile upon the woman who holds his heart, and he is forever grateful. “She is just checking everything over, but she says the legs are fine.”


“Is it a son? Or am I to be outnumbered even further?” His voice is light; he does not really care. None of his children have his condition. He has children when he thought he’d never get them. He has already been given more than he could ever have dreamed. 


His wife looks guilty. Inga huffs as if she is insulted he would even ask. Jora chooses that moment to re enter the room. She crosses to the bed and he immediately holds out his arms. The weight of the bundle feels better than any spoils of war.


“Congratulations, my King,” the old midwife’s voice is full of mirth. “She is beautiful.”


His children erupt into happy squeals. Inga looks pleased with herself. His wife gives him a sheepish smile. He feels as if his heart may burst.


The babe in his arms stirs, perfect and healthy, her blue eyes piercing through him like the sun through the mist. He runs his hand over the soft downy fuzz on her head, the same colour as his. His sixth daughter. His sixth blessing. 


“Sorry,” his wife murmurs beside him, but he shushes her. 


“There is nothing to be sorry for. The gods have given me yet another healthy, beautiful child. Another duckling for my flock. I do not care that she is not a son. She is healthy and alive, and my blood lives on. Besides,” he grins at her, “there is always next time.”


She groans, but a smile spreads across her face. “There will be a next time, will there? Is not six children enough?”


He leans in to press his lips to hers. “I can never get enough of seeing you round with my child, or holding my newborn children." 


"Papa, stop kissing Mother and let us see our new sister,” Alfdis demands, and he pulls always from his sweet wife to allow his daughters to crowd around him. They coo over their baby sister, touching her reverently as she gazes serenely up at them. 


“What will we name her?” Jorunn asks. 


He looks at his wife. She looks back at him. They fought over names, as usual.
“Dagny,” Inga pipes up, and her young seer’s eyes get a far away look. “I dreamed that, too.”


“Dagny it is then,” he affirms, looking once again at the child cradled in his arms. She blinks her big blue eyes at him, mouth puckering into a quiet yawn. He leans down and presses his lips to her tiny cheek.


I will protect you, littlest duckling, he vows silently. I will show you how to be Viking, how to be a daughter of Ivar the Boneless. I will love you with everything that I am. I will give you a home, and all that that entails. I will let you be what you wish to be, whatever path the gods have chosen for you. You have my word.


He pulls back; his wife is smiling, unshed tears in her eyes. His daughters are already crowding back around him, each demanding to hold their new sister. He thinks about how far he has come, how much his life has changed. How an angry, bitter young man became a king, a husband, a father. How he has been granted more joy than he could ever have imagined. How he loves completely, and is wholeheartedly loved in return. 


One day, the sagas will sing of how Ivar, King of all Norway, conquered lands, slayed his enemies, spread his fame. He will be remembered for his deeds and his success, his cunning mind and his sharp blade.


But this, these moments, they are what he will remember his own life for. More than battles, more than glory, more than any riches. His personal saga is these happy little faces, the tender gaze of his wife, the beating of his full heart.


And with that, Ivar the Boneless is content.

The Truth About Learning Japanese

(I’m going to start with a random side note: If I ever get a book deal to write Japanese primer, I’m going to call it I Eat Cake Everyday: A Complete Guide to Japanese with Stupid Sentences.)

It’s been a while since we’ve just talked, so I wanted to just take a moment to do that.

I think every Japanese platform at one point write an article about “the deep truth” of learning Japanese, claiming to give you the golden key that you need to become fluent in only 6 months or 1 year or whatever. 

The argument for those kinds of posts isn’t hard to understand: People are fundamentally similar. If people are fundamentally similar, it is very likely that works for me will will work for you. Thus, if this works for me, it will work for you. This does work for me. Therefore, it will work for you (most likely.)

This is why all articles start with something like, “I guarantee you that I’m no genius. [Insert daily task that the writer struggles with on a daily basis.] I’m just a regular person that tried out a few things until I found a winning formula.”

I, personally, want to do my own take on this kind of article. I won’t offer a golden key, but I’ll talk about learning Japanese.


1. Japanese is Coded in the Most Inefficient Writing System in the World

Kanji, the logographs that are the bane of all Japanese-learner’s existence, comes from China. Kanji itself, 漢字, means “Chinese characters.” Kanji were invented to suit the needs of the Chinese language (from way back when, before Mandarin/Standard Chinese was a thing.) Japanese, on the other hand, is a language isolate, and it is not related to Chinese. So the use of these Chinese characters has over time been used in different ways for different words and with different readings- for Kanji tend to have multiple readings, sometimes being just 2 and at other times 8. 

In Eastern Asia, the use of Chinese characters was widespread. It was used in Korea, in Vietnam, in Japan, to some varying extent in Malaysia, and the territories these nations conquered.

Korea developed an ingenious writing system called Hangeul, which now has all but totally substituted Chinese characters. Vietnam adopted the Roman alphabet with many diacritics. Japanese, well, Japanese developed two writing systems based on morae. These two writing systems could be used to write out the entirety of Japanese. Kanji is not really necessary. Further, there is no evidence to suggest that there are so many homophones such that even with context one could not make head or tails out of what was being said. 

So, Japanese does have a potential unique writing system that is easy to learn (it’s easier than Hangeul in my opinion), but it does not use it exclusively because of cultural reasons. Kanji is just hardwired into the culture.

But here’s where my personal opinion and advice come in: If you have to choose between loving Kanji and hating it, hate it. Don’t romanticize it. Don’t go “above and beyond” what you have to know because of your love for Kanji. Just learn what you have to learn, and leave it at that.

“How many Kanji must someone learn?” The official common use Kanji list (the Jōyō Kanji) lists 2,136 Kanji. How many readings are among these Kanji? Somewhere around 3,869. There are also some variations on Kanji that one should keep in mind and some Kanji that one sees only in names, so add around 400 Kanji to the official list and about 400 new readings.

“How many Kanji must I learn for my first year of Japanese?” All of them. That’s my honest advice. Don’t aim to learn only a few Kanji. If you’re going to learn Kanji, learn them all. Think in that mindset. As soon as you decide you want to learn Japanese, work on Kanji. Before you enter a classroom and learn your first few greetings and whatnot, make sure you know all the common use Kanji, or at least that you’re well on your way to knowing all the Kanji.


2. Language Learning is an Intensive Process

Learning a language is a process that scientists haven’t quite been able to describe accurately. We do know, nevertheless, that it’s a heck of a lot different from learning chemistry or carpentry or bicycling. 

In the Western world, there is this idea that one can learn a language in a classroom, normally as a subject period, with periods lasting somewhere from 50 to 70 minutes. Here’s the truth: it doesn’t work very well. (There are historic reasons for this way of learning a language, but we can talk about that some other time.) The success rates of language acquisition in classrooms is ridiculously low. This does not mean that language classes are bad: but it means that it just isn’t enough.

There are many reasons why learning a language in and of itself may be hard. It’d take forever to talk about all of them. 

But let’s talk a bit about lexicons. A lexicon, here, refers to the dictionary in your brain where you store the words you know. If you’re monolingual- you have a standard dictionary in your brain with a word and definitions. If you were raised bilingual, then you have one lexicon with two words and definitions. That is to say, if you’re an English-Spanish speaker, then you have “cat” and “gato” in the same space in your brain and you know that what applies to one applies to the other. Then, depending on your fluency and use, you may have two supplementary dictionaries where you store all the information about words that don’t exist in the other language and idioms and expressions and things like that. 

Now, if you’re an English speaker and, say, you want to learn German, part of what you’ll learn to do is to process your English lexicon entries into German. What that means is that you learn to engineer English words into German. “Father” turns into “Vater,” “to drink” turns into “trinken,” “Love” turns into “Liebe,” etc. So the words that have no relation with English (the non-cognates), turn into a supplementary lexicon and everything else is put through a mental processor. 

Because the brain can do this is the reason why many people in Europe can speak many languages. The fact that someone can speak Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, Italian, and French is not terribly impressive. The overlap in words (and in grammar) is so immense that what you’re doing is processing one language into another and you’re guaranteed an astonishing success rate.

Japanese, however, is different because it’s a language isolate. You can’t process one language into another. You have to learn words one by one. That takes time. It takes repetition. Memorization is as much an active process as it is a subconscious process. When people talk about the benefits of “immersion,” what they’re talking about most of the time is putting your brain into survival mode, i.e. either you learn all these words (and grammar stuff) or else you will not be able to survive and thus you will die. That is one way of doing it, and if you do not choose this path you have to commit some serious time to this. I believe that if one knows around 5,000 of the most frequently used words in any given language, one is guaranteed to know at least 95% of all the words one will hear/read in a day (given that one doesn’t go read a super technical manual on how to calibrate a nuclear reactor or something like that.) So, the question becomes how will you memorize 5,000 words? How long will that take? If one learns 10 a day, then it’s 500 days, and if one learns 50 a day, it’s 100 days. 

The tradeoff when it comes to speed is that the faster you learn something, the faster you forget. (When you relearn something, it should be faster nevertheless.) So how much time will you commit to learning a language? How will you follow that up? These are important questions.


3. Japanese Media is Considerably Insular

Japan isn’t like the United States. The United States wants every nation to know what music it likes, what fashion it wears, what it believes ideologically and socially, etc. The U.S. is everywhere.

South Korea, recently, is everywhere. K-Pop, K-Dramas, K-SNL, K-Beauty. If you want to know what Korea is up to, it’s pretty easy to find out. They want you know! 

Japan… eh. Japan is pretty good at making anime available globally. People know about Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon and the Mighty Atom and all that. When it comes to dramas and movies and tv shows, they’re not quite interested in that. Ages ago I wrote a post on the misconception of “Whacky Japanese Game Shows,” where I basically explained that most of those shows aren’t game shows but segments on variety shows, the only person in my mind having totally insane game shows being Beat Takeshi.

Okay, fine, what does this mean? This means two important things. First, one’s expose to the language outside of going to Japan or talking to Japanese people will be based highly on anime, which is fine but there are other styles of expressing oneself. One needs a bit of variety. If one goes the information/news route, then one is exposing oneself to something very formal and literary, but dull. Second, it means that when people teach Japanese, they’re going to assume that one wants to speak Japanese for business purposes. This sounds strange to say, but let me put it like this: Japanese is an important part of the world economy and STEM and anime, on the other hand, is not a sufficiently large part of Japanese culture so that the Japanese can figure you want to learn Japanese for that sole purpose. If you want to speak Japanese, then it must be for business purposes (and we’ll consider academics to be within business.) So you learn Japanese through the perspective of honorific and respectful language. This isn’t a bad thing either, but the desire to make you sound nice will often lead to lies about how Japanese actually works at a grammatical level.

(On the other hand, in South Korea the K-Pop/K-Drama boom is such a big deal that people around the world start learning Korean in hopes of auditioning for the big production companies in hopes of becoming actors, singers, dancers, and hosts.)

So here’s my advice: Once you have your feet wet with Japanese, once you know your Kanji and you know how to analyze a sentence (even if the lexicon isn’t all there yet), look at something that isn’t anime. I recommend movies, a lot of which are quite nice. Okuribito (Departures) was a great movie. An (Red Bean Paste) is a more recent film that was wonderful. Look up some movies. Sit down, and watch them. Watch it with subtitles, so you know what the movie’s about. But watch it a second time and a third time without subtitles. Try to see if you can make out a few sentences, read a few signs that appear in the background, take note of expressions or words you keep hearing. No, you won’t be able to understand the whole film all of a sudden, but it’s something new and something good and the more Japanese you learn, the more you will be able to return to the film and make out. Eventually, you will be able to listen to a sentence, pause the film, and look up the words you don’t know.


4. Learning Japanese Doesn’t Happen with One Method Alone

This is rather obvious, but it’s worth finishing this off with. There is an abundance of book series, CDs, cassettes, and even online resources (our own included.)

A language is greater than any method, than any curriculum, than any teacher. No one source has all the answers. One has to be encouraged from day one to look at many resources.

A library is a language learner’s best friend. Why? Because books can be expensive, and you will probably not need all the resources you dabble into for a long time. So, when you begin learning Japanese, look at the entire Japanese section, order a few famous books through InterLibrary Loan, if you have access to that, and sit down and just read the books, as if they were novels. Don’t memorize a thing. Don’t do the exercises. Just figure out their style, their aims, their perspective. Do read the footnotes! The more footnotes a book has, the more useful it tends to be in the long run. Information that isn’t relevant in Lesson 1 may be absolutely vital in Lesson 10. 

Check out some old books if you can. The way people learn a language today is not the same way they learned it 50 or 100 years ago. The most useful Italian grammar book I ever read was written in the 1800′s. Japanese books published before World War II may have some slightly outdated things, such as the /we/ and /wi/ morae, but they will be good for most of everything else. I’m personally dying to get library privileges again somewhere to be able to look into these, so if I find some good book titles I’ll let you know.

Because a lot of language instruction was, until recently, modeled after the way Greek and Latin was taught, reading some of our own material gets you familiar with the lingo, should you heed my advice. So people like to talk about cases and declensions and conjugations and moods and all that. The works of William George Aston are some of the most important books on Japanese historically. So, if you can find originals of those, please do read them.

Borrowing Yoongi’s car was a mistake. You knew it the second you left his house, and were reminded when you parked it in the run-down parking lot outside your equally run-down apartment building. The fact was only made more apparent when you realized that by borrowing it, you would have to return it… Which meant driving it to work. 

You thought about calling Namjoon and quitting rather than risk anyone see you driving your bosses car, but that would at best cause a very awkward conversation with Yoongi when you returned the car, and at worst land you in jail for grand theft auto. Neither option was ideal, so you very slowly and carefully drove the car the next day, paying close attention so as to not meet anyone’s eyes on the way to the elevator once you arrived.

To your relief, Jimin did not join you like most mornings. You had started to think that he timed it on purpose so he could have a minute alone with you to be a pain in your ass, but if that was the case, he had apparently gotten bored. 

Just when you thought the morning was going exceptionally well, Taehyung slipped into the elevator as the doors shut. You resisted the urge to groan, or reopen the doors and step out. You would not let him sway you in any way, including making you get off the elevator. It was only ten floors up–you could do this.

Yes I do anon. Yes I do. In fact, I wrote a great response to you with links and pictures and descriptions and funny commentary. But then my computer was an ass hole and I lost it all. Now I’m bitter, but I still want to share these awesome yuri games with you. So I’m gonna keep it shorter on my blurbs and trust that you can google stuff on your own and hopefully my response won’t get deleted this time. Also, I’ll be including dating sims/otome games in this list too, just to give you some variety.

1. Sono Hanabira Ni Kuchizuke Wo (A Kiss for the Petals)

The epitome of the yuri visual novel game franchise. Very cute, very NSFW and great voice acting. There are currently 13 games in the original series, plus drama cds, mini novels, an OVA, two spinoff series, a separate game available on Steam and so much more. I have played games 1-8 and loved every second of them, though my fave couples are Kaede/Sara and Eris/Shizuku. The 11th game in the series is the longest, with a main route for Risa and Miya and then spinoff routes for all the other couples. All the other games are focused on one couple. Since there is so much content in this franchise it’s hard for me to put everything you may want to know in one concise blurb so please feel free to send me questions or ask for links to things! 

2. Kindred Spirits on the Roof

As much as I have been dying to play this game, I still haven’t had the chance yet. Seriously, I have wanted to play this game since the PV was first released. Now that it’s finally licensed, translated and available on Steam I can play it but only once I get the money *cries gay tears* The story for this is super cute but has quite a few NSFW elements. A high school girl helps two ghosts on her school’s roof play matchmaker with other girls in the school so they can create a yuritopia and fulfill their dying wish of consummating their love. I’ve heard amazing things about this game and I can’t wait to play it.

3. Huniepop

This game is more of a dating sim than a visual novel but it’s really fun. And hilarious. And NSFW. It’s available on Steam and is fully voice acted. You can play as either a male or female who, with the help of a love fairy named Kyu, tries to have sex with all the women in town. And since there are only 8 women in town, your goals are totally achievable. There’s pretty decent diversity in this game, and by that I mean there are 4 WOC and they all have different personalities. There are also 4 unlockable characters that are super fun to play too. Keep in mind though that this game was written with male players in mind so some of the writing is a bit…weird or offensive. But all in all, I think this game is definitely worth the money, especially if you buy it now during Steam’s summer sale.

4. Astoria: Fate’s Kiss

Do you want to be able to date fictional people on your phone?!?! Yes? Me too! Do you want both a female AND a nonbinary option? YES? Me too! Do you want the story to be filled with action and magic powers and Greek Mythology??? YES TO ALL?!?! Then this is the game for you! It’s a decent mix between a dating sim and a visual novel, with two ending routes available for each story. The female option is Medusa, a kind and gentle woman who used to be a mob boss and the nonbinary option is Alex Cyprin, your very cute and charming boss. I’m actually behind on Medusa’s route because life and money *cries more gay tears* but what I have played is 10/10. AND you eventually get to get married!!!!! There are a few NSFW moments but a majority of the game is SFW. The writers put so much heart into these characters and the art is great and it’s definitely worth the money for all the content you get. It’s easily found in the app store! Highly recommend it.

5. Gangsters in Love

This is a game by the same people who make Astoria and it is just… the best. Trust me. The plot is: you’re kidnapped by some gangsters who claim your parents are up to some bad shit. You then choose a gangster to look after you while you are under their protection. There’s only one female option but she is worth every penny. Aurora James is the sexy, super gay hustler for the Valentine Gang and she won’t let you forget it. I swear, reading some of her dialogue has almost killed me it’s that gay. Like Astoria, this game is full of action and hilarity, just minus the Greek Myths. Again, the writers are awesome, the art is awesome and it is totally worth the money.

6. Sugar’s Delight

I won’t sugar coat it (ha!), this game is purely smut. But it’s a visual novel and I’ve played it so I figured I should put it on the list. In this game you’re a girl who dreams of owning a cafe and you get a job at Sugar’s Delight to learn the ropes. The cafe owner slowly but surely starts putting the moves on you. It’s not a terrible game but it’s not amazing either. I mean the art is cute and it’s fluffy and harmless. My biggest problem with it is…how to say this…um…they put a lot of edible things where edible things shouldn’t go. And I get it. It can be totally sexy to eat an entire slice of cake out of another woman’s vagina. But the whole time it’s happening in the story I’m just cringing in fear of how much that’s gonna suck for the girl who had the pastry in her pussy. I can’t really focus on how hot it is when I’m feeling second hand yeast infection anxiety. But other than that, it’s pretty cute.

7. A Little Lily Princess

I haven’t played this but oh my gosh do I want to. It’s a pretty new release on Steam so I haven’t been able to read much about it from other player’s perspectives either. It looks so adorable and sweet, plus the art is very similar to the art of Akiko Morishima, one of the yuri mangaka godessess. The game play looks multifaceted and fun with a nice ojou-sama type feel that I can always get behind. I’ll totally try to write a review when I finally play it!

8. Pacthesis Dating Sims

Okay, so this is a flashback into the depths of my teenage years. Like “these games helped me come to terms with my homosexuality” kind of depths. I at least wanted to mention the creator. Pacthesis is an artist on deviantart who made these dating sims that I used to play when I was younger; you were a girl and you had a few male options. Then low and behold, one day she adds a female character option to a game and I’m like “Yes???? Yes.YES!” And then my whole life got very gay from there. These games are cute and easy to play and SFW. I think only three of Pacthesis’s games have female options (Chrono Days, Lunar Days and Number Days) but they’re super creative and have a special place in my heart. Check them out if you can.

I think that’s about it. I mean, there are a few other games I’ve heard of here and there that have yuri/ wlw couples but none that I’ve played or can name off the top of my head right now. I hope that my followers take the time to check out some of these games. They’re all worth the time and money, in my opinion!

If you’ve been in the Yuri on Ice fandom for a long time now, then I bet you’ve already heard of Reiya. She is the author of the highly acclaimed Rivals series on AO3. The series’ first fic, entitled Until my Feet Bleed and my Heart Aches, is the YOI fic with the most number of kudos and hits.

Reiya ( @kazliin ) even has her own group of dedicated readers, who form a sub-fandom within the YOI fandom. Her blog is proof of that–being comprised of replies to the variety of asks she receives daily, different posts about the Top Ten’s of Yuuri and of Viktor in the Rivals world, reblogs of different fanarts and fanvids about her stories, and a whole lot more.

Any fan of Reiya would take pleasure in scrolling down her blog. From it, they can know some exclusive facts about her writings, like where she gets ideas, which of the two fics in the series was harder for her to write, and others. Once again, thank you @lexinthymia for tagging me, this wa an absolute treat to do. Again, I’m limiting to one per series for fairness and there will be spoilers for some of these series. I admit some of these entries were based on what happened to them in the manga if the anime stopped at a certain point. Also, once again, I probably went into more detail then I needed to with some of these couples, but lets begin!

10. Hana x The Wolfman - Wolf Children: Ame and Yuki

It’s one of the most short-lived romances on the list, but by God it is so heartfelt! It’s the closest thing to the first ten minutes of Up you’ll get in anime form (in terms of how it hits you emotionally). Right off the bat the film made me care about these two so much as a couple and as individuals. The Wolfman is shrouded in mystery, a lonely figure in search of meaning and belonging, and Hana is optimisitic college student, told long ago to always smile in the face of tradegy and sadness. Together they form a quick bond that is genuine, sweet, and heartfelt. The Wolfman’s death was crushing, especially since we are left to piece together the circumstances of his death, and every scene they appear in together afterwards had me sobbing.

I have to include this pairing. I watched anime when I was really young, but I didn’t seriously get into it until nine years ago. The anime that threw me beyond the point of no return was Fruits Basket. I originally shipped Tohru with Yuki, but Kyo grew on me as a character and as a result so did his relationship with Tohru. The last few epiodes of the anime pretty much solidified them as one of my firt anime ships; but coupled with the events that happened in the manga and they became an unforgettable ship for me.Their relationship initally brought them joy, pain and uncertainty, but in the end, it healed them in almost everyway possible,allowing them both to move on from Kyoko’s death and find happines together.

8. Rock x Revy - Black Lagoon

I’ve only just recently got into Black Lagoon, but one of the things I love most about the show is the complex relationship between Rock and Revy. The chemistry between these two is insane! I love the banter and dialouge they share together, and they’re two sides of the same coin in a lot of ways - Revy is nihilistic and cynical, while Rock is calculating and always tries to save those in need, even in a place as chaotic and deathly as Roanapur. Their relationship is based on an ironic twist of the ‘getting a second chance at life’ trope for both of them - Revy gave Rock a second chance at life in a hell-hole of a place, and Rock made Revy realise she has another chance to be more then just a drifter in life. Also, that cigarette kiss is near iconic at this point.

7. Nishikimi - Tokyo Ghoul

You would not believe how hard it was to choose between Touken and Nishikimi. In the end I went with Nishikimi because I had keep this list more anime-focused (keep in mind I only saw the first season of Tokyo Ghoul and bits of the second season) and my love for Touken has stemmed mainly from later chapters in Tokyo Ghoul: re. The moment Nishiki said he would come back from the dead to kill Tsukiyama if he hurt Kimi, I knew I had a new angsty ship to worship. This couple just hit me in the feels every time they’re on-screen together or when they mention each other when they’re apart. They gave each other a reason to keep living and have shown they will go to the ends of the earth for each other (Nishiki dragging himself, starving and weakened, to Anteiku to search for Kimi, and Kimi willing to give up her flesh to feed Nishiki). Given the events of :Re, I really hope that it ends well for them, I don’t know if my heart could take it otherwise ;_;

6. EdWin - Fullmetal Alchemist

Edward and Winry are practically made for each other, and it was only a matter of time I started shipping them when I Started watchinG Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. They follow a few of  the tropes I absolutely adore in romantic relationhips (childhood friend-to-lovers, promises to protect, and the fighter-healer dynamic). Winry was Edward’s healer both physically (she gave him an arm and a leg and repairs them for him) and emotionally, and Edward has been a constant in Winry’s life since she was very young, being their for her when he parents were killed and giving her a reason to put her skills to use. As the series went on, I came love every scene they were in together (of particular mention is when Winry almot hot Scar and their not-so-equivalent exchange moment at the end of the series). Also, the fact Ed might have tried to match her height as a child by using his cow-lick is priceless.

5. Rivetra  - Shingeki no Kyojin

Man I wish this gif was actually a scene from the anime. The couple that will never be. Shingeki no Kyojin made it clear from the start that it wouldn’t be pulling any punches when it came to characters’ mortality, but it really hit me when Petra died…and even more so when I saw Levi’s reaction. There was a lot of potential for a relationship to grow between these two; for me they had a lot of chemitry in the moments they were together. As per the trend with quite a few of the couples on this list, they were opposites in a lot of ways, but their differences complimented each other so well. Petra was mother-hen of sorts for the Survey Corp., while Levi was their steel-bound, stoic leader. However, I always felt Petra could see the other part of him many didn’t - that he actually cares about his comrades a great deal and has been through a lot of loss - and Levi always treated her lightly different from the others. It’s a darn shame we didn’t get more moments of them together or find out Levi’s true feeling towards Petra, but regardless, I still ship them for what could have been.

This is my only OTP. The only couple that has made me inconsolable after one particular event happened to them. The only couple I have been completely rendered speechless by when I see and think about their bond. The only couple that hold a very special place in my heart. You turn around smiling seductively at him, Bucky is wearing a dark grey tuxedo looking amazing “You clean up well, Bucky; I loved your hair pushed back like this.” You say running your fingers through his chest.

You kiss him; his hands keep you close to his body while yours explore his. You swear that the world stopped for a moment, his smell is intoxicating and you feel lost in the kiss. The soft lips, the mint taste. You don’t even realize that you are taking off his jacket.

Yoosung

  • This poor boy, how you convinced him to play a horror game is beyond anyone

  • All the lights stay ON whether it’s the middle of the day or not

  • But he really enjoys this game and tries to make the best decisions and tries to save everyone

  • Specially the wolf (makes you Google how to save it)

  • Gushes about the graphics half the time

  • Horrified that there’s even a choice to harm animals

  • Screams his head off when the wendigo first makes its appearance

  • And also screams when the flamethrower guy appears in the mines

  • Practically THROWS the controller at every scare, you’ll have to play through some high-tension spots for him

  • What is he more afraid of: gore or needles? BOTH, apparently ;;;

  • He answers Dr Hill’s tests truthfully so the game is 1000x scarier for him now ;;;

  • Explores the most, probably to stall but also finds most of the clues and totems

  • Unfortunately he gets a little too curious about every single item, and ends up getting Mike’s fingers caught in the bear trap

  • Makes you decide what to do because he can’t watch

  • You decide to just hack off Mike’s fingers

  • Yoosung flees for the bathroom

  • He couldn’t save everyone and he feels really really bad about it; you have to console him when he accidentally kills Chris and Ashley gets upset

  • “Yoosung, you can just replay it later-”

  • “NO, they deserve to be together now!!”

  • Restarts the game and still falls for the same jumpscares

  • What a (lovable) dork

  • After finishing up the game, he will need to watch no less than four romcoms to calm down

  • Throw in plenty of cuddles and praising his bravery and he’ll be so happy


Zen

  • Mike is his favorite character: buff hero on a mission to save his girlfriend, befriends a wolf, kicks Wendigo ass? He’s so there

  • All those innuendos at the beginning of the game?? He’s wiggling his brows at you the whole time

  • “A romantic getaway in the mountains sounds nice, huh babe~?”

  • “Yeah Zen nothing like a crazy flamethrower murderer to set the mood.”

  • Definitely gets Jess to take off all her clothes and gets flustered when you tease him about it

  • That part where Matt climbs the fire tower and leaves the axe? You can bet Zen is swearing profusely at the screen

  • High key makes fun of the horror-movie acting

  • Pauses the game to debate almost every decision

  • Sorry Josh, he’s saving Ashley no ifs ands or buts

  • Protects your precious eyes from any gore (almost smacks you in the face with the controller in his hurry)

  • The first Wendigo scares the hell out of him and he lets out the most high-pitched screech

  • I didn’t know you had such a ladylike scream, Hyun~

  • Tries to save everyone because he’s ZEN THE KNIGHT

  • Not a big fan of Emily because she’s such a bully but still saves her because he wouldn’t kill anyone just because they were mean

  • Sucks at quick time events, though, and probably curses the entire time

  • Both of you are yelling when someone’s getting chased, there is arm slapping involved

  • Manages to kill off a few people, including Emily

  • But of course he saves Ashley and Chris, Sam, Mike and Jess


Jaehee

  • Isn’t much of a gamer to begin with, but is willing to play with you for moral support

  • So done with all of these kids already, where are their parents, why are they on an isolated mountain after two girls died due to a prank they played??

  • Almost as jumpy as Yoosung, and tries to play it off but at one point spills her coffee all over the couch

  • “Why do you enjoy this?!”

  • She can’t understand who would willingly put themselves in stressful situations for fun?

  • Surprisingly sarcastic at times, as a defense tactic against the fear

  • If one more person mentions the butterfly effect

  • “Worst fear? Bad Zen fanfiction.” Jumin in a cat suit

  • Criticizes the characters ruthlessly

  • Sam running around in a towel – “How is she still alive and not freezing to death?”

  • Doesn’t want anyone to die, but you swear she smirked when the revenge plot was revealed

  • “This story is so cliche-wait what the hell is that thing?!”

  • MUTE TERROR as the wendigo screams at your character

  • Needs to take frequent breaks to calm her poor heart

  • Clinging to you for dear life

  • Jaehee please I can’t feel my arm

  • How can any of these kids be sane???

  • Sam is her favorite character. Takes a bath for hours and then saves everyone at the end. If you end up killing her, Jaehee will be salty af


Jumin

  • At first glance you wouldn’t expect him to be the type to play video games, but he owns a Gray Station and a ZetBox so

  • The lodge in the mountains looks nice and he considers investing in a ski resort

  • But comments on Josh’s poor planning skills and says he’s a terrible host ;;;

  • Jumin honey it’s just a game ;;;

  • You’ve seen his attempts at taking pictures. The parts where you’re supposed to keep the controller still? Better snatch that controller from him and set it on the table or you’re DEAD.

  • He’s so focused when he plays, and he manages to keep a straight face through most of the game. Hardly even flinches

  • How

  • Unfortunately, he isn’t too keen on lingering or searching each and every room, so he misses unobvious clues and totems

  • But will definitely replay the game until it says he’s completed it 100%

  • Refuses to read any walkthroughs or accept Seven’s “help”

  • Jumin no you can’t skip work for this

  • Ashley or Josh? That decision was tough since it made him think about you and V

  • He saves Ashley but you can see it bothered him

  • How can a game make me feel such things?

  • This guy may be cold and calculating to other people, but he’s fiercely loyal and protective so he tries to save as many characters as he can and you find yourself more attracted to him

  • When he learns about Josh and the whole revenge thing, he still fights to save Josh because that’s just what friends do and he understands how Josh was going through a tough time because of his sisters

  • Finds himself addicted to these types of games and buys similar games for you two to play


Saeyoung

  • LOLOL a game where he can decide the fate of 8 teenagers? LOLOLOL

  • Turns all the lights off for ~atmosphere~ and yells at tense moments to try and scare you

  • Guesses who the Psycho is right away

  • Laughs at all the lame puns and jokes

  • Won’t stop quoting the game for days (“Hello, friends and fans!” “Ugh, unfollow.” “It’s mammoth!” “You know what else is mammoth, MC? Me.” wiggles eyebrows suggestively)

  • Fear: cockroaches

  • Jokingly shoves the controller into your hands at the worst moments

  • Makes THE MOST RANDOM decisions ever: “I wonder what will happen if I FOLLOW JESS’S VOICE?”

  • “Saeyoung you know that isn’t Jess!”

  • “So are you saying I shouldn’t open the trapdoor? The one right here?”

  • Good luck prying him away at any point, he’s not leaving till he’s found all the clues and unlocks as many endings as possible

  • Not above trying to distract you when it’s your turn to play

  • “Saeyoung if you poke me one more time-”

  • Chris gets beheaded by the wendigo

  • “FA;DFKLDJS SAEYOUNG!”

  • He’d just laugh ;;; Seriously this man :)))

  • Never really had much interest in video games, but if you want to play it he’ll be right there beside you

  • Makes all the righteous choices and even though Emily’s such a horrible person, still makes it a point to save her

  • Protect this man

  • What do you fear most? Gore. This cutie apparently hates gore and he closes his eyes when Matt dies coz he tried to save Emily

  • That photo with the scarecrow? He felt calm looking at it, probably because he usually went on hiking trips alone for his photography thing

  • This guy is good with the “don’t move” scenes too, since he’s used to staying still when taking photos

  • Sucks at quick time events though ;;; He panics too easily and misses the buttons but thank God you learned about this early on in the game ;;;

  • Same as Jumin, he has a hard time choosing between Ashley and Josh

  • “I would give my life instead, why can’t that be an option?”

  • But he also chooses to save Ashley and also feels bad about it afterwards

  • Ashley or Chris? You already know this man will choose to kill himself than hurt the people he loves

  • And then he finds out that it was all a revenge scheme by Josh and he’s so surprised because how can someone do that to their friends?

  • He’s on the edge of his seat during Emily’s trip down the mines part

  • Super invested in the mystery aspect, ends up talking and theorizing through some cutscenes

  • V there are Wendigos PAY ATTENTION

  • Will make you look for all the clues and totems because he’s so invested in this game and really wants to save everyone

  • And he feels terrible when the flamethrower guy dies even though there was really no way to save him

  • When he finds out what really happens to the twins, oh my God, he’s so done with this game

  • Why would you make Hannah eat her sister??? And how come nobody searched the mines? Surely someone must have known about it?

  • If horny teenagers can find this mine in the middle of a snowstorm HOW COME THE SEARCH PARTIES WEREN’T ABLE TO SAVE THEM???

  • Surprisingly saves everyone except Matt because he was so stubborn about trying to save Emily



Saeran

  • Let’s face it, this guy would probably kill all the characters

  • You see his face change when he sees the twins in the beginning of the game though, and he totally chooses the option to let go and fall together instead of letting the other twin die alone

  • Hates the other characters because they were mean to the twins

  • Yup, he kills all of them

  • Except Sam, Chris and Josh because they weren’t involved in the prank

  • And also, the wolf

  • Fair enough, you roll with it

  • He decided he would save Chris but when he finds out Chris likes Ashley, chooses to shoot himself

  • Marry him

  • Then he finds out Josh tried to get revenge for his sisters

  • Is now super determined to save him

  • Unlike Saeyoung he’s kind of impatient but he reads through the stuff

  • Still shoots Emily because she was such a bitch

  • Kills Mike as well, because he was seriously a jerk to Hannah but everyone sees him as the hero –not Saeran though, so bye bye Mike

  • Matt finds Jessica and he’s considerate of her and chooses to hide instead, saving both of them

  • It wasn’t really his intention since he wanted to kill everyone, but you kiss his cheek saying how cool he is and he blushes

  • So upset when he finds out Hannah became a wendigo because how could she eat her sister? That’s really really messed up

  • And when he finds Hannah’s diary in the mines? You hug him because he goes silent and stares at the screen blankly

  • Saves Sam as well and he never plays the game again ;A;

  • Next time you’re playing Tekken


Vanderwood

  • Ha? What’s this game you want to play?

  • Pretends he’s bored with the game but deep down he’s LOVING it

  • Kills the quicktime events

  • “This is so easy.”

  • Gets so annoyed like wtf is wrong with these kids??? Why are they so horny???

  • He doesn’t always make the right decisions though and ends up killing a few characters

  • Swears a lot

  • Devastated when the wolf dies but he wouldn’t show it

  • So when you gently squeeze his arm and tell him it’s alright, you see him purse his lips

  • He’s crying inside

  • Oh it was all an elaborate prank by Josh?

  • FUCK YOU JOSH YOU DEAD

  • Wendigos are after him? Has no problem staying still and doesn’t miss a shot during Mike’s chapter

  • Hates Dr. Hill’s character because he felt like someone was probing into his brain and he doesn’t like it

  • Chris and Ashley are his OTP so he definitely saves those two

  • He finishes the game and tells you he’s done playing it, but you’ll catch him playing it late into the night when he can’t sleep, trying to get all collectibles and save everyone

Ranking OUAT’s Villain Redemptions

10. Mr. Gold / Rumpelstiltskin - What redemption!?  Rumple was an out-and-out villain in S1, and he didn’t truly change at all in S2 no matter how often he publicly restrained himself to appease Belle.  S3 was the only time he made an honest effort at redemption, but it was fraught with failures, temptation, doubt and relapses into asshole behavior.  The only thing that made it succeed was that it occurred in a very specific set of ideal circumstances…and that Rumple died at the end of it all.  After being resurrected and losing his son, Rumple quickly regressed into the villainy he’s comfortable with, becoming the Big Bad of S4.  In S5, we had that brief “hero Gold” arc that was not only morally insulting and nonsensical, but also pointless since he ends up choosing to become the Dark One again by the end of it…the Darkest Dark One, in fact, who is thoroughly unpleasant up until the very end of S6, where - after being faced with the consequences of his own evil actions, consequences that include the potential destruction of the entire multiverse - he does the right thing once, which leads to Belle taking him back, allowing him to help raise their son, and him getting accepted at the big family dinner by all of his victims. What the actual fuck!?  That’s not a redemption - Rumple hasn’t repented of his evil ways, he hasn’t given up his dark powers, he hasn’t sacrificed one damn thing, and he only did something good after his own evildoing backfired on him. He is literally responsible for the crisis he helped resolve.  And yet he gets rewarded with his own “happy beginning” with his abused wife and helpless infant son?  Fuck off, A&E.

9. Regina Mills / The Evil Queen - I technically consider Regina to have the worst redemption on the show since I refuse to accept Rumple as even having a redemption. Regina’s first attempt at redemption happened quickly into S2, some may argue too quickly. While it seemed to be going well at first, it soon became apparent that she was only doing it in order to regain custody over Henry rather than out of any true remorse or desire to change. The moment something goes wrong for her, she turns evil again, and ends up being even more heinous a bitch than she was before.  If the show had been operating under any logic, Regina should have been considered irredeemable at this point.  But instead, she is given another chance, and for most of S3 she does a surprisingly good job…until the last five episodes, where her redemption is suddenly fasts-forwarded so that she receives all the rewards she has not yet done anything to deserve: a new boyfriend, easy reconciliation with Snow and with Henry, a True Love’s Kiss with Henry that breaks the Dark Curse, light magic out of nowhere that defeats her previously more powerful sister, and the complete trust and forgiveness of the entire town despite her past victimization of them. But then one thing goes wrong for her, and while she resists falling back into full-on villainy, she still returns to being a whiny, spiteful, self-pitying woman-child who is always looking for the easy way to get what she wants and occasionally does do evil things to achieve this, yet is paradoxically treated by the rest of the cast as a messianic saint, someone who has come so far and worked so hard and deserves her happy ending, with the narrative frequently giving her all of the big hero moments at Emma’s expense.  In fact, much of her development comes at Emma’s expense, since A&E clearly see her as the true star of the show.  And that show just isn’t any fun to me.

8. Cora Mills / The Queen of Hearts - This one is just bizarre. Cora was a villain of the highest order all the way up to her death, where she had a dying epiphany as to where she went wrong in regards to her daughter.  But for some reason, her death is treated as such a tragedy and as such a source of guilt for Snow (not how she killed Cora, no, just that she killed Cora at all) that one would think Cora redeemed herself before her death, which just isn’t so.  Things got iffier when Cora showed up in the Underworld during 5B, and after doing one good deed in reconciling with her daughters and getting them to reconcile with each other, she is allowed to go to Heaven.  While I personally find this acceptable since Cora actually did repent of her villainy and fully acknowledge that she would deserve to go to Hell if that was her fate, I can see why many would be bugged about one of the most evil villains in the show’s history being shown going to Heaven while other characters higher above her on the moral scale - Milah, Gaston, Auntie Em, and even Prince James in the same episode - are condemned to the River of Lost Souls.  When put into that context, it seems less like a good lesson on divine mercy and more a case of creator favoritism toward the character. Cora probably should have just remained in the Underworld to continue her redemption.

7. Maleficent & Ursula - Two thirds of the Queens of Darkness (the other one, Cruella, was an irredeemable sociopath in life and in death), both of them have things that work about their redemption and things that don’t work.  For Ursula, her redemption comes when, after Hook brings her father Poseidon to town who restores her singing voice, she realizes that her true happy ending wasn’t recovering that but reconciling with her father, who is now repentant of his past patriarchal abuse of her.  This is all well and good, but Ursula really didn’t do all that much evil for the redemption to be powerful.  She always came off as lost and confused and hanging out with the wrong crowd, not truly villainous.  And then there’s Maleficent, who has the opposite problem.  Her happy ending is also reuniting with a family member, her long-lost daughter Lily.  It’s sweet and touching, but it also glosses over all of Maleficent’s established villainy.  Maleficent cursed people, burned people alive, destroyed a village, was deemed as having the greatest potential for darkness by a Chernabog, but none of it matters in the end. Even her sworn vendetta against Snow and Charming (whom were made to look like villains and Maleficent their victim) is abruptly dropped and she’s suddenly getting along with them. It’s pretty much Regina’s bullshit redemption but on a mercifully smaller scale.  Since Maleficent did not actually repent of her evildoing, the show should have treated her character accordingly - as still a villain and a potential threat, but also a loving mother.  At the end, she’d be the gray-shading which is complimented by Ursula’s white and Cruella’s black. 

6. Tinkerbell - Aside from the villain-to-hero journeys of Regina, Rumple and Hook in 3A, we also got Tinkerbell, who was an ex-fairy turned trusted partner of Peter Pan.  The Nevengers persuade her to help them, but only if there’s something in it for her (namely, leaving Neverland and being able to confront the Blue Fairy about getting her wings back).  In the end, inspired by Regina and Hook’s progress, Tink learns to believe in herself and earns her fairy status back.  It’s a nice little arc, but it’s missing one crucial detail - the nature of her villainy.  We never see her and Pan interact, we never learn exactly what kind of work she did for him to make him trust her so much.  We see that she’s a scavenger who is prone to violence, but that’s it.  Wendy, Pan’s longtime prisoner, is friends with her, so she couldn’t have been all that bad.  This lack of clarity undermines what is otherwise a good redemption.

5. Zelena Mills / The Wicked Witch -  For the most part, Zelena’s redemption in S5 and S6 really works.  She was never as bad as Regina, so already her changing is more believable. When she realizes that her wicked lifestyle is actually harmful to her baby daughter, she allows Regina and Robin to take her in order to keep her safe.  She doesn’t join Hades despite him professing his love for her until she thinks she can use her own love for him to redeem him.  And when it becomes apparent that it won’t and never will, Zelena kills him in order to protect her sister and everyone else in Storybrooke.  When Regina is an ungrateful bitch and blames her for Robin’s death, Zelena is ostracized from everyone else.  But even when the Evil Queen comes along and tempts her to return to her wicked roots, Zelena keeps firmly out of the conflict, preferring to remain a neutral party for her baby’s sake until her hand is forced and she joins the side of good despite it not really getting her anything and no hero save for Belle caring much for her.  This commitment to doing the right thing comes to a head when she actually sacrifices her magic, the thing she’d defined herself by for so long, to help stop the Black Fairy, a sacrifice Regina should have made long ago but never did. After this, the other heroes fully embrace her as one of their own.  It’s a great redemption, but there is one snag - Robin, both the man and the baby named after him.  The baby Zelena conceived through deceiving Robin into thinking she was Marian.  By - let’s not mince words here - raping him.  It’s not quite as bad as Regina with Graham, especially since Zelena didn’t kill Robin and Robin was willing to give her a second chance of his own volition prior to his death, but it’s still rape all the same, and to have the rape victim die while the rapist keeps the baby is extremely squicky, no matter how surprisingly good a mother Zelena may be. This one aspect casts a shadow over Zelena’s redemption and it never should have happened. 

4. King Arthur - Arthur was a villain in 5A, a corrupt monarch obsessed with fulfilling his destiny and ruling over Camelot at all costs.  While despicable, Arthur was also somewhat sympathetic too, as he became more evidently pathetic as the arc went on and Merlin really did screw him up by filling his head with visions of a future he felt the need to achieve.  In the climax of 5B, Arthur escapes prison only to be promptly murdered by Hades.  Down in the Underworld, Hook confronts Arthur with the truth: he was a terrible king and will probably go to Hell if he doesn’t do something to atone.  Note that at first this is the reason why Arthur helps Hook in his quest for the book: he just wants to avoid the consequences of his villainy.  But as the episode goes on, a clear change in Arthur can be seen as he sees the depth of Hook’s feelings for Emma, his bravery and his nobility…in this lowly pirate, Arthur sees the man he had wanted to be and failed to become, making him feel true remorse.  Arthur then becomes invested in the quest to the point where he is willing to sacrifice himself to the River of Lost Souls so that Hook can get to the book.  And at the end, when a doorway to Heaven is open and Arthur has the chance to go through it, which was the whole reason he joined Hook on this quest at the start, he declines and opts to stay in the Underworld, to rule it as a benevolent king and make it a better place, which a short on the S5 DVD shows that he did indeed do.  In just one episode, Arthur had one of the best redemptions on the show, from a selfish cad to a noble hero.  While like Zelena, he also has a rape-like situation with Guinevere that remains untouched upon (he used magic dust on her to keep her from leaving him and turn her into his compliant wife), there was no confirmation of actual rape and even some proof against it (he was too consumed by his obsession with Exaclibur to do anything romantic for Guinevere, let alone sexual), so it’s not quite as harmful to his redemption.

3. Ingrid / The Snow Queen - Ingrid is an even better example of a great redemption being accomplished in just one episode.  Despite being terrifying, prejudiced and insane, Ingrid was also one of the most tragic and sympathetic villains to ever be on the show, with an absolutely heartbreaking backstory and her sole motivation being to have a family who loves her.  She cast the Shattered Sight spell in order to make everyone in Storybrooke kill each other save for Emma and Elsa, who would become her new sisters, but when Anna shows her a letter from her sister Gerta expressing remorse for imprisoning her and confirming that she still loved her, Ingrid realizes the error of her ways.  In one of the best redemptive villain lines in the series, she says “I am a monster. Not because of my powers, but because of what I let them turn me into!”  She then reverses the spell at the cost of her own life, telling Emma, Elsa and Anna that they are all amazing people and that she is proud of them, then saying that her happy ending will be to join her sisters in death.  The whole scene is acted and scored beautifully, and I can’t help but cry anytime I see it.  By acknowledging what she did wrong and accepting responsibility for it, Ingrid is one of the show’s best redeemed villains.

2. Anastasia / The Red Queen - One of the two main villains of Once Upon in Wonderland, Anastasia quickly began to look more appealing, sympathetic and redeemable in contrast to the monstrous villainy of Jafar.  Her main crimes, apart from aiding him, were giving up love for power and being a neglectful ruler to her people…and she was helping Jafar in the hopes of getting to change the past so that she never did any of that.  When this failed and it became clear that she wasn’t going to be able to take the easy way out, Anastasia gave up on her aspirations and finally took full responsibility for being a terrible queen, vowing to make it up to the people of Wonderland by fighting to save them from Jafar, a fight that she stuck through even when it got her tortured by the Jabberwocky and then murdered by Jafar. In the end, her redemption earned her life, being revived by the water from the Well of Wonders, and won her back the love of Will Scarlet.  Years later, she is still ruling Wonderland but now as the White Queen, who actively works to bring love, hope and joy to her people. Anastasia’s redemption is everything that Regina’s is not, with her being fully self-aware of her villainy, truly remorseful of her actions once she starts her redemption, and with purely altruistic motives - doing the right thing just because it’s the right thing and she wants to help make amends for her past mistakes.  Add in Emma Rigby’s performance and it’s nigh-perfect.

1. Killian Jones / Captain Hook - Hook’s redemption starts at the very end of S2, inspired by his regrets for failing Baelfire long ago and not wanting to do the same with his son Henry, putting aside his desire for revenge in favor of doing the right thing.  He had everything to gain by not making this decision, but he does so anyway.  Throughout 3A, he does an admirable job helping the heroes through Neverland and returning to being the honorable man he was long ago, although his motives aren’t entirely pure as he hopes to woo Emma. When he is separated from Emma and gives up hope of reuniting with her, he tries to go back to his villainous pirate ways, but is overcome with remorse after doing so, realizing that his time with Emma changed him to the point where it’s not just for her that he wants to reform for, but for himself too.  When he learns that Emma’s family is in danger and that he must find her and get her to go help them, he trades the Jolly Roger - and his home, crew, livelihood and reputation along with it - in order to do so.  He continues to do good not to “get into Emma’s pants” but to ensure her happiness regardless of whether she ever returns his feelings, and to be the hero he now sincerely wants to be. His redemption comes to a climax in S5, where he becomes evil again after Emma forces the Darkness upon him to save his life, and is once again put into a position where he’d gain everything he wants by following through on his villainy, but remembering that this is not the man he wants to be, he once again does the heroic thing instead, at the cost of his own life.  In the Underworld, Hook learns the value of self-forgiveness and accepts the possibility of a second chance at life, but when it looks like this is impossible, he promises Emma to move on to Heaven when she asks him too.  Unable to do so until his unfinished business of helping Emma defeat Hades is resolved, Hook has a heroic quest alongside Arthur where he proves just how far he’s come, and when he goes into the light to fulfill his pledge to Emma at the end of it, he is instead resurrected by Zeus, deeming him a True Hero worthy of being reunited with his True Love.  

Hook’s redemption is superb not just because of the events that transpire and his growth throughout it, but because of his overall attitude toward the whole thing.  He knows full well that he was a villain, is remorseful for every crime he committed and takes full responsibility for them, and whenever the chance to make things right with someone he wronged comes up, he takes it.  It takes a long time for him to fully get past his self-loathing for his past sins, as he doesn’t feel entitled to happiness just because he’s changed and is doing heroic deeds now, as opposed to Regina, Rumple and initially Zelena who all believed themselves entitled to a happy ending, their crimes and victims be damned.  And lastly, also unlike them, every privilege that Hook has by the end of the series he has earned through his own hard work at redeeming himself.  He has no leftovers from anything he gained as a result of his villainy, even the rings on his fingers have changed from ones that belonged to dead victims to new ones he presumably fairly bought.  His new wife and family, his friendships with others, his house, his ship, his job as deputy sheriff, his very life…all thanks to his heroism and the good karma it rewarded him with.  All of this is why Hook’s redemption is truly the series’ finest.

Mista and Trish Romance, is it Canon? DEEP ANALYSIS AHEAD

While I was re-reading Vento Aureo (mostly to find some good Giorno and Mista stuff for my analysis on their relationship..still need to finish that eventually) I also wanted to explore Mista and Trish’s relationship, since a lot of Jojo fans assume they got together after the end of Vento Aureo.

I love and respect Trish’s character wholeheartedly, she is one of my favorite female characters in Jojo. As a confused 15 year old girl, she was able to develop her stand and contribute to the team, even though she was surrounded by violent criminals trying to kidnap her (and a father who wanted her dead). With that being said, a lot of Jojo fans assume she and Mista are a canon pairing, because of their interactions after they switched bodies, and because of that one image of Trish grinding on Mista in Jojo Agogo. In fact, when I read the shitty b&w scans of VA, I thought that too, especially when I kept seeing that Jojo Agogo cropped image of them dancing, being posted everywhere.

But when I saw the entire image, and looked through all the other Jojo Agogo poses (this book is a riot, there’s one scene of Killer Queen being groped and lifted up by The World), I realized right away that this was just a glamorous fan-service thing Araki made. I mean..there are Squadra members participating in this dance party (look at Fugo and Risotto, they are being so gay..despite having never met each other in the story) and though I’d like to think they all just randomly stopped fighting, invited Fugo back, and started a dance party (before the Squadra members got killed)..it’s safe to say this has no real basis in the canon story.

So what do we know about Mista and Trish’s relationship from the canon narrative? Well, he likes to check out her “goods” in the earlier chapters of the story…and that’s all we really know in terms of his attraction to her. Mista is a bit of a lech so that isn’t surprising at all, I mean he lets Giorno put his hand in his pants to help him “aim” his pistol, and the story notes that Mista, before joining Passione, called out to women.

After that….there’s barely any interaction between Mista and Trish. In fact, it seems like he just completely loses interest her. In that scene above, he is upset.while staring at Trish’s tatas..because he fears the boss will come after him for looking at his daughter like that. After the gang betrays the boss, he has free reign to pursue her without worrying about that anymore, but he chooses not to.

In fact, he decides to join Bruno because he wanted to be second in command after the boss is killed, and because he trusts Giorno’s judgement..he doesn’t want to do that for Trish’s sake (which is the opposite from Bruno’s motives, who acted in the heat of the moment by protecting her). By that point in the story, he seems to not care all that much about Trish in a “romantic” context, and focuses his attention on a certain blonde haired “protagonist” instead. If he truly was interested in her, he would try to talk to her more..but he never does…at all..until they switch bodies.

When they switch bodies because of Silver Chariot Requiem, everyone is freaking the fuck out because they aren’t in their original bodies. Trish has the most over the top reaction to this. Right away we learn that she doesn’t find Mista attractive at all. Also when Mista touches Trish’s boobs while he is in her body, his reaction is, “why the fuck do i have these!?” not “oh my god i have boobies hell yeah!!” Also poor Mista, he is upset that she thinks he is some hairy smelly freak of nature. And honestly, I would yell at Mista too and tell him to stop touching me, if I was in her position as well.

Here, the most important part, is Mista saying, “You think I really want to touch you?” He’s affirming that he’s not really interested in her that way by asking that rhetoric question. It could also be him just acting defensive, but Mista is a straightforward kind of guy, he says what is his on his mind and doesn’t think too hard about situations…in fact that is a huge aspect of his personality. Which is why when he said that, I believe he was being honest towards the way he felt about her in that point in the narrative.

Also when Trish runs to Giorno, who is in Narancia’s body, Mista says “Now you really want to die huh” and I busted out laughing. If that isn’t some kind of weird overprotective comment (implying he means: don’t you dare touch my giorno) I don’t know what is. I highly doubt that Mista is saying Giorno would harm her, because that is out of character for Giorno’s personality, he never hurts people, not even in a comical way, unless they are morally bad in his eyes. Both Trish and Mista know this about his personality. At that point Mista was getting sick of her criticisms, and when she runs to Giorno, that was the final straw for him haha.

But it’s not all bad between them! Once they get back to their original bodies, they have such a cute moment together omg. I loved these scenes, poor Mista was feeling self conscious about his body odor, and Trish tells him that she misses it! Now from that line alone, I definitely can understand why people assumed they may have gotten together after the story ended. However, Trish says his fingers are still freaky..which is basically her reaffirming that she isn’t attracted to him in that way (remember, she said his fingers were dirty and hairy earlier). And Mista doesn’t take that to heart, hence the super cute moment they have when they laugh (reminds me of the weird things me and my friends do when we laugh off awkward situations as well).

In fact, Hato and Joshu, who are brother and sister in Jojo part 8 (jojolion) have an exact same moment where they turn to each other and laugh, mimicking Mista and Trish’s pose in that final scene. (ugh I WISH I had that saved, it’s adorable).

Meanwhile, Trish’s pose follows the direction of Bruno’s extended leg, symbolizing she is going to listen to his advice for her: which is to restart her life after they defeat her father.)

Having looked through all of their interactions, I don’t think, by the end of Vento Aureo, that they were interested in each other romantically. However, I can see them becoming close friends. All we really know about Trish after the story is over, is that Bruno gives her his house to live in and wishes for her to go to school in that area. (imo Trish and Bruno have a much deeper meaningful connection with a potential romance, I can do a meta post on them if yall want that)

Also, in Purplehaze feedback (the novella about Fugo rejoining passione, which imo is canon because the jojo games think it is, the Japanese fans love it, and Araki gives it his seal of approval by adding his own illustrations on what the characters look like in the book) Trish is a popstar, that strays from passione. In a radio interview, she refers to them as “a group of friends” that she “owes a debt to.” Giorno then says the following to Fugo:

“In Venice, you said we didn’t even know what kind of music she liked. Now you do.”

He raised the glass to his lips, took a sip, and put it back on the table.

“We didn’t help her with this, you know. We don’t do that any more. She got the recording contract on her own merits.”

And with that, he moves on to talk about Fugo’s betrayal. If Trish were still very close to them, Giorno would have mentioned it right away, because he was trying to make Fugo feel guilty for abandoning them. However, it seems like she isn’t and to me, that is OKAY. Though Trish proved herself by fighting with the crew, at the end of the day, she isn’t a gangster, so why would she stay close to them? I’m sure she contacts them and maybe visits them from time to time, but passione is still a violent organization, despite Giorno’s good intentions. They are mobsters that violently pursue underground drug trafficking and dangerous stand users. For a popstar, that is not good publicity.

Now I’m not saying you can’t ship those two, please ship away! I love seeing fanarts of them, but in terms of canon, based on what we have so far, I highly doubt they get together romantically.
