Why Wonder Woman was so Important to Me

I had the opportunity to see Wonder Woman recently, and I was left awestruck.  Wonder Woman is such a timeless character, and I feel this story and the way the film was made really captured the heart of the original character.  With DC’s track record, it had a high chance of being lazy and bad.  But it wasn’t.  It was original. Refreshing. I cried a lot, and here’s why.

1. Women Are Strong 

I’m not one to loudly complain about the misrepresentation of women in media (though we often are).  We’ve had some really awesome and strong female characters over the past couple years.  But somehow, Wonder Woman took this in a completely new direction.  Watching the Amazons fight the invaders on the beach nearly brought me to tears.  It was so special for me to see women take on roles we rarely see them in.  They were the fighters, the protectors, the providers.  There are many women out in the world right now who are fighting their own battles, much like the Amazons.  They’re providing for their families or serving their countries through the military.  It was a pleasant reminder that while men and women have differences, they are equally strong and skilled.

(Also yay for a female director!)

2. Actions Speak Louder

Many times, Wonder Woman is questioned.  She’s scoffed at for being a women (which would have been very common during that time).  She’s underestimated.  But what’s so amazing here is that she never has to prove herself to the men.  It would’ve been so easy for the movie to fall into that common trope.  She never argues with a man and she focuses her attention on others instead of herself.  She wants to kill Ares and stop the war. And in the end, her actions speak louder then her words ever could.  What I took from this is to rise to action.  Stop talking and start doing.  Ignore what others say, because you know what you can do.  Hold your head high and rise above.

3. Mutual Respect Brings the Most Success

As I said before, it would have been easy for the film to fall into certain tropes.  A trope we often see nowadays is a woman proving that she (or all women) are better then men.  That’s never a point of conflict in this film.  Her love interest, Steve, fights as her equal.  He isn’t clumsy or weak to make Wonder Woman look stronger.  He believes in her and helps her to the best of his ability. When they become interested in each other romantically, they both hold their own.  They love each other but are not dependent on one another.  We see the rest of the men in their gang react the same way later on.  They all eventually come to love and respect Diana.  It’s a great reminder that feminism is about collaboration and equality, not one gender being better then the other.  We each have something to bring to the table and our differences are what makes us stronger. 

4. It’s Okay to not be Okay

There’s a really interesting character in Wonder Woman’s gang named Charlie.  He’s supposed to be the world’s top shooter, but time and time again he fails.  He seen some things that have damaged him pretty heavily.  What’s really interesting about this character is that we never see this issue resolved.  He doesn’t have his big “hero moment” where he is suddenly able to shoot and save the day.  This is so much like real life.  We’ve all been hurt, and it’s ok to be damaged.  You have nothing to prove, but your great efforts will help everything to turn out right in the end.  At one point, Charlie even says to Diana “You don’t need me, you’re better of without me.” To this she replies “No, Charlie, if you’re not here, who will sing?” This implies that Charlie is still a valued member of the group, despite his shortcomings.  His friends are able to recognize his other strengths when he cannot.  


5. There is Much Darkness in the World, But Love Will Save the Day

Not much to say here, as Diana said it all in her own monologue:

“I used to want to save the world, to end war and bring peace to mankind. But then I glimpsed the darkness that lives within their light. I learnt that inside every one of them there will always be both. The choice each must make for themselves - something no hero will ever defeat. And now I know… that only love can truly save the world. So now I stay, I fight, and I give - for the world I know can be. This is my mission now, for ever.”

Often times love is portrayed as a great weakness. But it isn’t.  To love is to truly see beauty in the world.  To love is to be brave and strong.  Love is the greatest power of all.  

Additional Notes:

We must learn to forgive.  Diana had the opportunity to kill the chemist responsible for Steve’s death.  And she chose not too, instead focusing on the larger problem at hand and in turn leaving the past in the past.

There were not gratuitous or sexualized shots of the women in the film.  The framing was based around the action.  The women were all beautiful, but the film relied on it’s story and the strength of it’s lead rather then her beauty. 

There will always be hardship. There isn’t always one bad guy to fight.  We all will have to continue to fight our demons and endure through our trials.  But it’s the light and the love, those precious moments, that we fight for.

Thanks Wonder Woman.  You inspired me, and I’m so grateful.  I don’t think I’ve seen a superhero movie with more heart.  There will be many days ahead where I think “What would Wonder Woman do?”

Debt

Imirrim-Chæma-Thiridion had answered a distress call. It had probably been stupid on xir part, but what was done was done.

A small ship, even smaller than xir, had crashed on a barren but breathable-to-most-species moon in the system of Hyaldnar. Xe had been making a delivery for xir mentor when xir communication system picked it up, and since xe was barely past adolescence, the journey of not even five rotations was making xem bored and seeing a crash site would be exciting. After all, it was probably an automated distress call, nothing could survive a crash to a rocky moon.

But there xe was, standing in front of a crumpled and burned wreck and the very much alive creature that had crawled out of it after perceiving xir pod landing. Imirrim cursed xir rotten luck, now xe would have to help the poor thing. Xe had been planning on just sight-seeing the wreck a bit, maybe later contact whatever species it had belonged to to tell it had crashed, if only to look good in front of xir mentor.

After a while of the creature gawking and baring it’s teeth at Imirrim, xe recognized the species as human, the fifth longest living space-faring species. Still, xe belonged to the second longest living, and Thalmors like xemself could outlive five humans each born at the moment of the previous one’s death. What had especially stuck from xir exobiology and alien anthropology lessons was humans’ way of expressing their emotions in strange and backwards ways, and their sheer capability to holding grudges. Great.

Imirrim approached the human slowly. It was approaching xem right back, still showing it’s teeth like it was attacking, but but humans expressed their emotions backwards, so that was good, right? Besides, the human was wounded and limping, and xe could outrun it if things went bad.

“Finally someone answered my call,” the human -a male, xe guessed- said as Imirrim was close enough. “I’ve been here for a week and I’m running out of water.”

A week? How was he alive?

“Oh, where are my manners,” the human said and extended the less damaged of its upper limbs towards Imirrim. “I’m Thomas Warren, from the human colony on Clyzma Al Carrim, farmer by profession.”

Imirrim carefully extended a cheliped to mimic the greeting, and did xir best not to flinch when the human grabbed it and shook it. “I am Imirrim-Chæma-Thiridion from planet Skismin, apprentice to the Grand Navigator.”

“It is very nice to meet you,” Thomas said and shook xir cheliped some more before finally letting go. “You mind taking me off this rock?”

Imirrim shifted xir weight from a foot to another to a third. “Sure.”

“Great!” Thomas said and pulled his lips even further back, revealing even more teeth, more than could possibly fit comfortably into a mouth that small. “I’ll be right back.” He limped back into the small shipwreck.

Imirrim was regretting this. It wasn’t customary to help strangers, especially from other species, since there was no telling what they could do. Humans had a reputation of being unpredictable, especially when wounded. And this ‘Thomas’ was covered in wounds, some looking much too severe for anyone to possibly survive.

Thomas emerged from his wreckage, carrying something that was clearly important if he was willing to retrieve it from a wreck while severely wounded. “So, Imirrim, was it? Where are you headed?”

Imirrim led the human to xir pod and helped him climb over the threshold. “Back to Skismin. You can get better help there.” If he stayed alive that long.

“Lovely, you’re a real life saver,” Thomas chuckled. “I’ll owe you one.”

To Imirrim’s surprise -and relief- Thomas did not die during the two rotations’ travel back to Skismin. He talked xir auditory membrane off and after a while filled the pod with the faint stench of alien blood, but all things considered he wasn’t the worst passenger. Once xe had docked the pod back on Skismin and had helped Thomas and his bag of belongings (which turned out to be an assortment of small possibly decorative items, data storage devices, clothes, and even a few ordinary rocks one could get anywhere but that were apparently ‘cool’) to the nearest emergency clinic, Thomas turned to xem one last time.

“If you ever find yourself in a bad spot, call me,” he said with a serious expression xe had come to recognize during their time at the small pod. “I owe you my life, just call and I’ll pay you back.”

Imirrim stared after him for a long while before turning away and heading to tell the Grand Navigator that hir delivery was received and thanked for, and to tell xir mentor about human Thomas Warren.

After xe had told hir what had passed, Imirrim asked one last question. “Master, what does it mean when a human says they 'owe their life’ to someone?”

The Grand Navigator’s age-reddened crest rose curiously. “Like you probably know, humans are known for holding grudges and for being almost insensibly loyal. While they keep in mind all wrong that has been done to them, they do not forget a good deed done to them either. 'Owing one’s life’ means you have done something to them that they regard highly of, usually the saving of a life, and that they will do anything in their power to, as they say, 'return the favor’. Did this Thomas say this to you?”

Imirrim nodded. “Right before he went with the medical staff, he said he owes me his life, and all I need to do in a time of distress is to call him and he will come.”

The Grand Navigator raised hir upper chelipeds in a sign of pride. “You have done well, my apprentice. To earn a human’s favor is a feat of great bravery and compassion. One day, you shall become a fine and daring Navigator, like the explorers before us.”

Imirrim ruffled his crest at the praise. Maybe answering the distress call wasn’t such a bad idea after all.

Time went by, and Imirrim progressed from an appearance to a novice and on, up the ranks, and eventually landed a spot as the head Navigator on the long trade ship Pochella, traveling at high speeds through barely charted nebulas and dangerous asteroid fields. Xe plotted courses through the densest of rock fogs and past dangerous gravitational pulls, and not once did his calculations for the course fail.

Xe had lived many more cycles, many more than a human could ever live. Imirrim had counted- xe had kept a distant eye on Thomas Warren in case xe would ever have a need for the favor he had claimed to owe xem, but the need never came. He had died fifty-seven cycles after xe had rescued him, or seventy-two years, as humans counted time, and even more time had passed after that.

Still, even after all this time xe looked back at him for courage when daily life was hard and xir spirit was down. Xe had met and worked with humans many times now and they all shared the same spirit Thomas Warren had had, but none of them had left quite the same impression on xem as Thomas, who had smiled and joked through nine rotations on broken bones and told fondly of his family and farm back on Clyzma Al Carrim.

Imirrim had plotted a course through a particularly dense asteroid cloud, a course that would save the ship a lot of time and fuel. The ship was nearly out of the cloud when the proximity alarm went off and something clamped into the ship’s hull. The computer showed xir an approximate hologram of the something. It was a smaller and armed ship attaching itself to their ship.

The Cieruna members of the crew -small, short-lived, and feathery things with nimble hands and a sensitivity to electromagnetic fields- were screaming in terror. Pirates, they yelled, we can’t shake them off, we’re all going to die. Shush, xe said, we will not die. I’ll call for help, be quiet.

Imirrim galloped to the unoccupied communication post and sent a distress message on all frequencies. “This is Imirrim-Chæma-Thiridion, head navigator of the trade ship Pochella. We are inside the Halfway asteroid cloud. And we are under attack by pirates. Please help us.” Once the message was sent xe stepped away from the console and joined the crew in listening to the magnetic creaking of their hull in the morbid silence that had followed xir call.

The ship could not move, following the already plotted course with the extra weight and bulk of the pirate ship attached to them would be suicide, and finding a new safe route out without knowing the exact dimensions of the other ship was impossible, not to mention useless against the threat. All xe could do was hope for a miracle.

And a miracle xe got. Another proximity alarm sounded, and the computer showed an image of a charging mining pod, ten times smaller than the pirate ship and at least a hundred times smaller than Pochella. Outmatched, outgunned, it rammed the pirate ship and despite being hit by their lasers and missiles, it kept on pounding it with its grappling arms and mining lasers and asteroid bombs, everything it had. And finally, when the pod was leaking air and plasma and fuel into space, the pirate ship released its hold and retreated, engines sputtering and its hull dented and battered, and flew away from Pochella and the mad mining pod to safety of the asteroids.

“What was that? What happened? The Cieruna chirred and cheeped. “It is gone! We are saved!”

Imirrim was still looking at the hologram screen. The mining pod was all but destroyed in the short but fierce fight. Someone exited it, wearing a spacesuit and carrying something, and the pod engaged it’s barely functional engines and sped away leaving a trail of debris and smoke in its wake, until it finally exploded from the damage it had sustained a safe distance away.

Imirrim stared at the hologram for a moment, and shifted xir weight from a foot to another to a third. Xe input a code to the control panel and opened a small airlock near the creature that had saved them all. Xe set off from the bridge where xe was posted and galloped through corridors and climbed down stairs, until xe arrived in front of the airlock that had already closed and the creature that had successfully boarded the ship.

“Are you Imirrim-Chæma-Thiridion?” The creature asked. Xe nodded, all the while looking the spacesuited being up and down. Four limbs, two for walking and two for holding. No tail, short neck but a neck nonetheless. No added room for fins or spikes or crests. It was a human.

The human handed their possession to xem -a lumpy bag that both felt and looked like it had rocks in it- and pulled off their helmet.

The human was ruffled and grizzled and had spark burns on his face and his eyes were serious, but he was baring his teeth in a joyous smile. He extended a hand to greet xem and Imirrim took hold of it and shook it.

“I am Stepa Warren,” the human introduced himself. “You rescued my grandfather from a shipwreck when he was young. He spoke fondly of you til his dying day. It is an honor to meet you.”

Some Ilvermorny headcanons
  • First and foremost, every day is cranberry pie day
  • While students do have robes, the clothes they wear underneath the robes are not uniforms. There is an eclectic mix of tastes, from the very serious horned serpent who wears button-downs and ties every day, to the wampus who has enchanted their graphic t-shirt to move, to the thunderbirds and pukwudgies who mutually exist solely for sweater weather.
  • Every year on James Steward’s birthday, there is a school-sponsored cranberry pie bake-off. Pukwudgie house nearly always wins. Once, thunderbird won and good lord you would think it was the civil war all over again
  • There are a lot of local professors, of course, so you get some really thick Boston accents, but there are also professors with southern belle accents who serve iced tea in class, professors with Canadian accents, professors with midwest accents, several Native American professors with smooth, lulling accents, and some Mexican professors who slip into Spanish when they get super excited about their subject. There was a visiting professor from Ireland once, and 96% of female students (and some male students) had major crushes on him.
  • Wampus house is where you go to get body-crushing, soul-lifting hugs
  • Horned serpents may be scholars, but they are also some of the keenest observers. They watch the whole school from afar and quietly play matchmaker to all of their friends. No one suspects them because - what, horned serpent? No. They don’t know about emotions. Meanwhile, the house president makes a killing on the bet she made to predict the homecoming king/queen. 
  • Thanksgiving at Ilvermorny is a spectacle that has to be seen to be believed. It’s almost bigger than Christmas. The thanksgiving feasts at Ilvermorny put Hogwarts to shame. Turkey, ham, real cranberry sauce, pies - oh my god so many pies. They’ve got cider, and tea, and cocoa like you wouldn’t believe. There are New English dishes and Southern dishes and Native dishes and Mexican dishes and Canadian dishes and West Coast dishes - essentially it’s a gigantic continental potluck, and it goes on all day long. Also, their pumpkin juice tastes 1000 times better.
  • While things like dueling and fighting with wands may be frowned upon at Hogwarts, at Ilvermorny it’s kind of just assumed that stuff happens, and the profs are very chill about it. “Just don’t kill each other okay” “just take it outside” “no casting destruction spells indoors” “bring some band-aids with you” “if you break your nose don’t bleed on your homework”
  • Pukwudgies are a pretty agreeable house over all, if not a bit salty and surly around the edges, they’ll still help you with your homework and bring you soup when you’ve got a cold. But all bets are off when they step onto the lacrosse field. Maybe its a pride thing, but pukwudgies are frikkin animals when playing lacrosse.
  • Wampus beats pukwudgie at lacrosse fairly often. They don’t actually practice that much, they just kind of win.
  • This fact has fueled a sports rivalry - friendly in wampus’ eyes, bloodthirsty in pukwudgie’s eyes. 
  • At wampus/pukwudgie games, horned serpents sell special blends of popcorn. Thunderbirds purchase, hoard, and eat 89% of this popcorn.
  • Horned serpents and pukwudgies often, though not always, end up having an unspoken rivalry in potions class.
  • Contrary to popular belief, wampus is not full of athletic jocks. However, they are the most body-positive of all of the schools, and, somewhat ironically to the stereotype, will never judge anyone for their athletic ability. They want everyone to be able to enjoy athleticism and bravery and adventure in the ways they are most able and gifted.
  • That being said, they do have the kind of student body who, if called upon, could become a minute militia.
  • When there is a freak hurricane or tornado headed headed for the school, it will be a wampus student who is patrolling the halls and telling students where to go for safety. If there is a bully in school, you had better bet your bottom dollar that s/he will be beaten to a pulp by the next day, and it will be a wampus student sporting mysteriously bloody knuckles.
  • Pukwudgies are the ones who patch up the bully; they might accidentally wind the bandages a little too tight.
  • Thunderbirds love a good game of hide-and-seek. They have a tradition of, every halloween, playing hide-and-seek in the dark in the woods.
  • Horned serpents are the students least often caught for sneaking in contraband into school. Caught being the key word. Most students learn at some point in their education that if you want a nice stiff drink, you go to horned serpent. During secret designated holidays, horned serpent common room turns into a speakeasy. 
  • Unexpectedly, it is pukwudgies who carry the most weapons and dangerous materials on their person at any given time. If a group of Ilvermorny students were going through a security check, it would be the pukwudgies held at the line while they emptied their pockets (bigger on the inside, of course) of various poisons and weapons. When asked, they would just shrug and say “just in case”.
  • The town around Ilvermorny is home to several franchised chain restaurants that, although they are no-maj brands, have been taken over by Ilvermorny alumni and thus serve predominantly wizarding patrons. Cups levitate to customers in the Starbucks, there are magic-only options on the menu; the chik-fil-a floor sweeps itself; at dominos the pizzas assemble themselves while the one clerk waits, bored, at the register. There are in-house cues for magic patrons whenever a no-maj walks in. The clerk rings a bell or taps loudly on the counter, or yells out an order than is actually a code word for stop doing magic stuff. It’s like red light green light.
  • There are some old service tunnels beneath the school left over from WWII and the Cold War. They’re like a labyrinth, and Thunderbird has a monopoly on the maps to the tunnels. Some of the more obscure tunnels have large rooms that are perfect for parties and impromptu speakeasies (lookin at you, horned serpent). Thunderbirds will rent out these rooms to fellow students at a fair and competitive rate.
  • Unlike hogwarts, Ilvermorny students are more apt to use modern technology. Electrics can be weird around witches and wizards, but they still enjoy a lot of no-maj programming. They use computers instead of quills (but still have to print off their essays, ugh,) and listen to music, and watch TV.
  • Star Trek has long been a school cult favorite. Pukwudgies have adopted Bones as their pop culture mascot; Kirk is Thunderbird’s, Spock, horned serpent. Wampus vacillates on which of these three they like most, though it must be said, when they start watching Next Gen, many wampus students find themselves enamored with Worf,
  • There has only been one no-maj to ever make it past the magic shields of Ilvermorny unaided. This instance was in 1985. His name was Chad, who at the time was 1) stoned out of his mind and 2) delivering chinese takeout to a horned serpent pulling an all-nighter. School admin found out later, and there was hell to pay. They never did track down Chad to wipe his memory.
  • Pukwudgie house does have more than its fair share of healers, so they are definitely the ones to go to for cold remedies, home made soup, the best cures for menstrual cramps, and really good back rubs.
  • However, they are also the ones to go to for less medical remedies: the best hot cocoa, the most gourmet teas, and home made food.
  • Each house has a class president who is elected for a two-year term (unless they’re a final year student, in which case they will serve one before being taken over by their VP). They have some influence within their houses, but never as much as they’d like. For instance, the thunderbird president once attempted to institute mid-day dancing parties, but school admin said no.
  • Pukwudgies are usually not super athletic, but are often very good at things like darts, archery, and waterbaloon fights.
  • Wampus takes ultimate frisbee very, very seriously.
  • Thunderbird hosts an ongoing scavenger hunt throughout the semester.
  • The women of horned serpent blow off steam and the stuffy acadmic pressures of their house by making pillow forts and watching rom coms with each other.
  • Back in the eighties some wizard created a magic version of D&D, and it has become a weekend favorite of many students across all of the houses.
  • After graduation, instead of having a class ring, it has become tradition for Ilvermorny students to make a pendant out of their golden cloak buttons.
  • Ilvermorny may be separated by inter-house squabbles much like at Hogwarts, but at the end of the day, they all leave school wearing the same blue and cranberry robes, sporting the same skill with a wand, raised to the same scrappy, witty, mod-podge tenacity that American witches and wizards embody so well.

Hey! If you're still taking prompts, could you write about neil and Andrew having a conversation about Neil's past? Like the stuff he had to do to survive and the stuff he went through with the worlds shittiest parents? Also I'm pretty sure neil has killed people like it makes complete sense so maybe andreil talking about that?

There’s a band of pale blue light nipping at the tops of the trees and sharpening the silhouettes of the houses, but everything else is fresh and dark. Andrew smokes with the pack clenched in his fist, the cherry of the cigarette winking at the street lamps winking at the orange moon.

Their front porch isn’t like the rush of the rooftop, but he can get that same jitter of fear from Neil nowadays, and he’s more portable. He’d left him knotted in the bedsheets an hour ago, and knowing he’s inside somewhere at his back is burning him up. Andrew inhales and focuses on the exhale, the way the smoke still tries to hurt him when it should’ve given up. He likes that nicotine doesn’t leave him alone.

Neil slips out the front door and lets the screen door clatter, and Andrew knows that he’s upset before he sits down two steps below Andrew, holding his own head.

He doesn’t ask; just smokes fervently. The moon bobs its head sympathetically, wind catches the smoke and breaks it over Neil’s head like water on rocks.

It occurs to Andrew that Neil isn’t going to start this conversation, because he likes to think things through on his own, solve them wrong, and tell Andrew about his mistakes later. He’s insufferably convinced of his own problem-solving abilities, then obsessed with the mechanism of his own missteps.

“What?” Andrew asks impatiently. He flicks ash from his cigarette and holds it out in front of Neil’s face. Neil sidles through his own tangled thinking for long enough to glance up. He leans forward and sucks the smoke from between Andrew’s fingers.

When he looks away, gusting smoke from his open mouth, he says, “Matt called. We fought.”

You fought,” Andrew guesses.

Neil looks agitated, blue in the choked light, eyes black and furious. “He was being unfair. He keeps trying to tell me what’s right or wrong lately, because he thinks I’ve been— been deprived, like my experiences were outside of humanity, or morality, and it’s so— condescending.”

“You’re only realizing this now? All of the foxes are condescending. It is the only way they can avoid their own failure.”

“This was different,” Neil says, shaking his head. “I can tell when they’re saying things because they want to see my reaction, and this wasn’t that. He meant what he was saying.”

“And what was that?”

Neil goes gagged silent. He shifts backwards up to Andrew’s stair without looking at him, settling into the groove worn into the wood.

“That killing someone makes you a monster. That murder is the worst thing you can do to a person.”

hey there! thanks for answering all our questions on this blog + how possible would it for someone to crack ribs with a solid kick? there's a character i have in mind that's escaping captivity, but they're also young, so i'm not quite sure how easily they'd be able to hurt the (adult) antagonist in such a manner, especially lacking any fighting experience to begin with?

Well, you can break someone’s ribs with a kick. That’s the entire purpose of the roundhouse, especially the version where you strike with the ball of the foot rather than the top of the foot. (And… aren’t like me when I was seven or eight, when I was new to sparring and totally stubbed my toe in another kid’s side at a tournament after my brain/body got confused between the two. I didn’t break my toe, but I could’ve.)

That story above is important, by the way. If you’ve got a character who doesn’t know how to fight then they’re not even going to get that far. If you don’t know how to kick then that’s a great way to get your leg caught by someone who knows what they’re doing. They catch the foot by the ankle, and then drag you wherever they want. That’s assuming the character can get their leg up and out without falling over. Even if they do manage that, say because they’ve watched a lot of martial arts flicks, they won’t know how to generate power and will be very slow. A, B, and C occur anyway. Your protagonist is going to end up back wherever they were being kept, this time in a much less comfortable position.

Even for an experienced martial artist, kicks require fairly constant bodily upkeep in order to be able to do them cold (much less perform them at all). That’s not a combat scenario, that’s just in general. You’ve got a great chance of pulling all the leg muscles you need to get away, including ones you didn’t realize you had and that’s if you don’t break your toes. Board breaks with the roundhouse kick are the most terrifying of them all because you’ve got to remember to curl your toes just right in order to carry your foot through the board.

Kicks are off the table.

More importantly, this is an exact rendition of the “Feel Good Violence” trope: My Instincts Performed A Wheel Kick.

The protagonist is suddenly and randomly enough good at fighting to not only fight, but win when making their first attempt at a violent altercation. They use techniques which require a fairly high level of dedication and aptitude out of “natural ability” and “instinct”.

Unless you’ve got an ironclad reason for invoking the trope (past lives/ immortality/memory loss/the matrix) it will undercut your narrative credibility in ways the story cannot recover from.

When you’ve cracked your foundation, you’re done.

Narrative integrity is based on the rules or limitations we’ve set for ourselves, those limitations are the ironclad rules by which the narrative functions. They exist on two levels: in behavior and actions of characters within the world, and on a secondary level the setting’s behavior around them. Everything in your story must be working to uphold the fiction. When it doesn’t the audience’s “suspension of disbelief” starts to crack. You are beholden to the rules and limitations set down by your setting. Without them, you have no story.

When you’re setting out to create a character, there are four questions you should ask yourself:

1) What can the character do?

2) What can’t the character do?

3) What is the character willing to do but can’t?

4) What can the character do, but is unwilling to?

Within these four circles you have your character, their ethics/morals, and their limitations. That is the box you’ve created for yourself. It is important to own it and abide by it. When dealing with a protagonist, those limitations are not just the foundations of a character but the entire narrative.

Your character cannot fight your antagonist in a one on one and come away with any victory because you have established they don’t know how to. That is a limitation you set for yourself. That the audience knows and understands, so they will expect this character to act in accordance with it. They may want to walk up to the antagonist and kick them in the ribs so hard those ribs break, but they can’t. That desire could be a driving force behind them learning to fight later. As of now, though, their powerlessness in active violent conflict serves to reinforce the antagonist’s position. Reinforcing the antagonist’s position is for the narrative good.

They should be making choices based on the Venn diagram’s center: when what they can do meets what they are willing to do.

If what they can’t do conflicts with what they’re willing to do and they go with it anyway then the result is a failed escape attempt. A captive’s survival is based on their value. If they’re valuable enough for the antagonist to go through the trouble of capturing them in the first place, then they’re probably not going to be killed. At least, not until their value runs through. They lose and wind up back in captivity under more scrutiny, more security, and with fewer exit options. This reminds us why they were captured in the first place, and reinforces our villain’s position.

A protagonist can fail and retain their legitimacy many more times than an antagonist can. While this is a perfectly legitimate narrative outcome, I don’t think its the one you’re looking for.

This is the second issue with your question:

A narrative’s antagonist is its backbone.

Your antagonist is one of the most important pieces of your story, if not the most. They are the lingering threat, the shadow hovering over the story, and the knife at your protagonist’s throat. They are seventy percent threat, and the last thirty relies on their ability to make good on it.

One of the biggest mistakes an author can make is assuming their antagonist’s position in their narrative and the threat they provide are impervious to harm.

Unlike your protagonist, your antagonist is always in a precarious position. They must constantly re-affirm themselves and the threat they represent through their actions. That threat is all consuming and when challenged, it must either be defeated or confirmed.

If defeated, then the threat is gone.

If confirmed, then the threat level is heightened because now we imagine what they might do next.

An antagonist can re-affirm themselves after a defeat, but they’ve got to double down on their effort and create a new threat rather than relying on their old one. You as the author must work harder to make up for what you lost, and even then you’ll never have the initial fear ever again.

The first rule of the antagonist is: your capital is limited, so spend it wisely.

When you undercut an antagonist in favor of the protagonist before its necessary, you damage the antagonist’s credibility and, subsequently, their position in the story. When you lose your antagonist, you lose most of your narrative tension.

A character who doesn’t know how to do something is applying a limitation to the character. You are applying a restriction to what they can and can’t do. If you’re character doesn’t know how to fight, then fighting will be off the table. More importantly, having your character succeed at a skill set they have no experience in doesn’t make them “awesome” or “cool”, it means instead that the other characters who put time and effort into honing these skills suck.

When those characters are your antagonists… that hurts.

If you’ve got a protagonist with no hacking experience who manages to overcome a supposedly great hacker on their first or second go round with no time spent learning how to hack, then who looks bad? The second hacker. They’re the ones who are supposed to be good at hacking. If the narrative hinges on them being a major antagonist, then the author just shot their narrative in the foot.

Combat skills are the same way. They’re a skill set, not an instinct. They don’t come naturally, and take a great deal of time and effort to hone.

If your goal is to show your dangerous antagonist is a bumbling moron when an untrained teenager gets a lucky shot so miraculous they manage to lay them up for the rest of the story, then that’s a job well done.

If your goal is for the antagonist to maintain their credibility within the narrative? Don’t use them for a punching bag.

Violent confrontation is based just as much on threat of force as it is on the follow through. The threat is usually more frightening than what follows, and your protagonist is already challenging the fear by trying to escape. From a narrative perspective, if they get over their fear enough to challenge their antagonist directly then it’s game over. You spent your all capital either at the beginning or midway through the story, and you’re not getting it back.

Remember, your antagonist has to do just as much work to earn their street cred as your protagonist. Their position is a delicate balance of power management and threat of force. They rely on show over tell. They need to live up to whatever it is you’ve been saying about them. They need to be as dangerous as they’ve been puffed up to be, unless their reputation itself is the real antagonist. Never forget, your antagonist (whoever they are/whatever it is) is the backbone of your story. They are often the driving force of action, the reason why the protagonist is struggling, and the focal point. In some ways, they are more important than your protagonist because without them the protagonist’s got a whole lot of nothing.

When you undercut your antagonist, you also hurt your protagonist’s development. You cheat them of their chance for growth, and deny them their ability to show off whatever it is that they’re actually good at i.e. using their bravery, intelligence, and cleverness to sneak out.

If your protagonist beats down their Goliath at the beginning of (or even the middle) of the story then there’s no reason for them to go to the mountain master and learn to throw rocks.

“Dude! You won’t believe what happened!” Peter whisper-shouted while approaching Ned next to his locker. He had to pause for a breath of air before continuing in an excited tone. “I got a date with Y/n.”

Ned’s eyes widened before his lips curled into a smirk. “No way, Parker. There’s no way you asked her out.” He laughed, thinking of the time Peter almost threw up out of nerves before his last attempt of inviting you on a date.

Peter scowled slightly. “You’re lack of faith in me is actually sad. But you’re right, I didn’t ask her out. She asked me.” He finished, grinning with bright eyes.

“I knew it. She’s totally got a thing for you man!” Ned laughed as Peter wore a proud smirk. “So what’s the deal? Dinner and a movie or…?”

“Just a movie. She wanted to go see something called ‘The Bye-Bye Man.’ Not sure what it’s about really, but I’m so excited. Hopefully we’ll get to talk a lot afterwards and maybe get to know each other better - what’s with the face Ned?” Peter cut himself off once he saw the grimace that had replaced Ned’s smile.

“Oh-uh. You do know that ‘Bye-Bye Man’ is a horror movie. Right?” Ned asked, trying not to rip the band-aid off and spoil Peter’s mood.

“Horror? Are you sure?” Peter gulped, attempting not to panic at the thought of embarrassing himself in front of a girl he really, really liked.

Ned sighed and brought his phone out of his pocket; rapidly typing into the search bar before selecting a photo of the movie poster and flipping his phone towards his friend.

Now it was Peter’s turn to grimace. “Shit.”


You were standing outside the movie theatre with two tickets in your hand, trying to deflect any nervous feelings invading your thoughts. You had finally worked up just enough courage to ask your crush out; leaving little bravery left to take with you on the actual date.

“H-Hey Y/n.” Peter offered you a small wave before wiping both his hands on his jeans, gazing at the ticket counter. “What showing are we going to?” He coughed.

“Oh. 7:45. I already got the tickets. Hope you don’t mind.” You smiled, proudly holding up the two pieces of paper before watching his face fall slightly. “What’s wrong?”

“You’re not letting me be all chivalrous and stuff. The guy’s not supposed to let the girl pay.” He said, crossing his arms in mock anger.

“Well, consider this my treat. I mean, I did ask you out after all.” You smiled while leading Peter inside; cool air rushing in to surround you.

“Why thank you.” He bowed slightly, mocking a British accent.

You giggled before lacing your fingers through his. “The pleasure is all mine.”

The two of you stood in line for a good fifteen minutes before getting a large popcorn and two drinks (which Peter demanded he bought) before heading towards your designated theatre and sitting down in two open seats.

Peter immediately felt the panic set in as the lights dimmed and the trailers ran their course. He knew how much you loved horror films and he definitely didn’t want to ruin this one for you since you seemed so excited.

Throughout the movie itself, you noticed how Peter’s knuckles turned white as he gripped his drink or how he seemed to tighten his lips in fear of letting out a shriek. He even went to cover his eyes a couple times before shoving his hands back down to his lap.

You had tapped him on the shoulder several times to ask how he was doing and if he wanted to leave but he declined. Not soon after, the movie had come to a close and the credits began to rolled.

With worried eyes, you turned towards Peter, holding back a giggle at his wide eyes and slightly opened mouth. “Did you enjoy it?” You questioned, snapping him back into reality.

He cleared his throat and sat up straighter. “Yeah. Great movie. Particularly enjoyed the special effects.” He nodded, refusing to meet your gaze.

“Hey.” You gently placed your hand on his arm, making him finally turn in your direction. “It’s okay to be afraid Peter.” You smiled softly.

“Pff. Me? No. I-I’m good…” He looked away before fiddling with his hands. “Yeah. I was afraid.”

“Well why didn’t you tell me. We could’ve left if you wanted-”

“No.” He cut you off before sighing and grimacing slightly. “This movie was really scary, but you were into it so I was trying not to cover my face the whole time. I didn’t want you to change your plans for my stupid fears.”

“Okay. Let’s make a plan.” You nodded at Peter, making sure he was listening. “Anytime you feel afraid from now on, just tell me. I won’t think of you as anything less than amazing Peter.”

You grabbed his hand as a blush took over his cheeks. Maybe he would learn to like horror movies.

Ilvermorny/Hogwarts Combos

I’ve seen a couple of these posts, so I thought I’d try my hand at it. Go through the potential combinations of Ilvermorny and Hogwarts houses and write a bit about what they represent to me. Not based on any data or polling, just on what seems to make sense to me:

Thunderbird Gryffindor: Thunderbird house is said to favour adventurers, and this is perhaps the most literal interpretation. Thundergryffins tend to be explorers and thrill seekers. Their bravery is not necessarily geared to some righteous cause (though this combo does not preclude that) they simply want their life filled with excitement. As such they can be easily bored which can make them irascible if they are deprived of stimulation. But they are bound to make interesting the lives of any who calls them friend.

Thunderbird Hufflepuff: Thunderpuffs focus on is on experiencing things with friends. These people are not ones for solitude, they will go stir crazy left on their own for a couple of days. It seems they’re always on lunches out, at parties, on trips. It’s not so much the activity that matters so much as the company. They just love people and want to experience as much of mankind as possible.

Thunderbird Ravenclaw: This is my house combination. Thunderclaws are the creatives and innovators. Luna and her parents would all find themselves in this category. If Thunderbirds are adventurers, Thunderclaws prefer to adventure via stories - sitting curled up with a good book as their mind takes them to far off worlds beyond anything that can be experienced in reality. They are dreamers and idealists and can often get their heads lost in the clouds. It can be painful for them when their dreams do not match up with reality and perhaps the oft-found obsession with fiction is an escape.

Thunderbird Slytherin: Thunderins are definitely more on the ambitious side of Slytherin house. They aspire to achieve greatness. For them their adventure is the road to success, and the luxuries that success brings. They definitely appreciate the finer things in life and their ambition tends to be towards living the high life rather than being some lofty goal. Nonetheless Thunderins are often some of the most driven and passionate folk you will ever meet.

Wumpus Gryffindor:  Unshakeable in their convictions and unmatched in their tenacity, Wumpindors are soldiers through and through. Their causes may be righteous or not, but like the beast from which House Wumpus gets its name, Wumpindors are nigh unstoppable. This combo has a dark reputation and Wumpindors may tend towards anger and aggression. They can be quick to see force as the best option in a crisis. They are ultimately fighters - Not merely people who will fight, but people for whom fighting is their way of life and their first resort.

Wumpus Hufflepuff: If you think of the quintessential social justice warrior, that is a Wumpuff. I do not use the term SJW in an inherently negative term as many do. Rather, Hufflepuffs are concerned with honour and fairplay and as such Wumpuffs cannot stand seeing injustice in the world and seek to eradicate it. They will fight fiercely to protect their friends, but their protective instincts apply to the whole world. This can result in them lashing out at people who they see as part of the problem but at their hearts they simply wish to fight for a better world.

Wumpus Ravenclaw: Wumpenclaws are the practical Ravenclaws. These people have ideas and they want them implemented damn it! They are excellent planners and incredibly organised. This combo favours strategists, business leaders and entrepreneurs.

Wumpus Slytherin: Ruthlessness incarnate, Wumperins have lofty ambitions and will do absolutely anything to achieve them. This is probably the combo with the darkest reputation. I would put Voldemort himself in this category. But do not let you think this is an inherently bad combo, any more than Slytherin itself is. If a Wumperin’s ambition is a benign one their passion for achieving their goals is bound to result in success. And if their cause is righteous, a Wumperin can spark a revolution.

Pukwudgie Gryffindor: Anyone would be fortunate to call a Pukindor a friend, for they are perhaps the fiercest allies one could have. Their loyalty and the bonds of friendship that they form are unbreakable. When their friends are down and out they will be the ones to light a fire beneath them, and then rain hell down on whoever did their friend wrong.

Pukwudgie Hufflepuff: In my mind Puffs and Puks have a lot of similarities, so a Puklepuff represents the idea of the quintessential Hufflepuff. These people are the gentlest souls you will ever meet, kind, nurturing and supportive. The Cinammon Rolls of the world. They may well be great cooks or simply have a great love of food - or indeed of anything which brings people together.

Pukwudgie Ravenclaws: Pukenclaws are people who use their ideas and intellect to help others. Pukwudgies are known for being healers and it is in this combination that that becomes most literal - Pukenclaws are often Doctors, nurses, vets or surgeons. In their day to day life they are adept at finding the easiest solutions to problems - the masters of “lifehacks”.

Pukwudgie Slytherin: I’ve often said that Slytherins are the type of people to low-key ruin the lives of anyone who wrongs their friends. People often overlook that Slytherins are incredibly loyal to one another and it is in the Pukerin combo that this quality shines through. The focus here is less on ambition and more on cunning and ruthlessness - more specifically the cunning and ruthlessness required for the Pukerins family (be that literal and/or metaphorical) to survive. And when they or their loved ones are wronged, they are not above enacting a terrible, yet subtle vengeance.

Horned Serpent Gryffindors: Serpendors are people with an area (or areas) of expertise and they know it. They are self-assured in what they are good at (and know what they are bad at) and this surety results in unmatched confidence and competence in that area. That classic Gryffindor bravery comes through in their ideas and their execution. They are independent and efficient. Hermione would be a proud Serpendor, as would McGonagall.

Horned Serpent Hufflepuffs: An unusual combination, as the warmth and heart of Hufflepuff may seem at odds with the detached analysis of Horned Serpent. However funnily enough I think that Isolt Sayre herself falls into this combo. Serpenpuffs know people. They are excellent judges of character and know what makes people tick. They may find promising careers in psychology. They are well meaning but they may feel the need to coddle their friends and family (just as Isolt refused to tell her children of Gormlaith even into their teenage years) and they can at times be aloof and irascible. If you are friends with a Serpenpuff you can probably expect a couple of fallings out (just as Isolt did with William), but in the end they care for their loved ones deeply.

Horned Serpent Ravenclaws: These two houses share many similarities, and of the four Ilvermorny Houses, Horned Serpent is the one with the most direct Hogwarts counterpart here. As such Serpentclaws represent the “stereotypical” Ravenclaw. Aloof, cool and analytical, these are the academics. Their work is done in papers and in the lab, but the implications can be world changing. They need to be mentally stimulated at all times and as such prefer the company of other intellectuals.

Horned Serpent Slytherins: Slytherserpents have a focus on the cunning aspect of Slytherin house. They are always the ones with the plan and that plan is more often than not at least a little underhanded. While other Slytherins may let their ambitions outmatch their abilities, Slytherserpents never have this problem. They do not achieve their ends through brute force and ruthlessness (as Wumperins do) but through subtle tricks and manipulations.

Cassian Andor: A Character Analysis

Before I begin, I would like to make 2 things perfectly clear:
1.  I am not a therapist or anything like that. I am just stating my opinions/observations/assumptions. None of which need be taken seriously. 
2.  Here there be spoilers.
Now, let’s get started, shall we?

Who he is:

Cassian Jeron Andor is a loner; he has maybe one friend at the start of the movie. He is quiet; he rarely says more than needs to be said at any given moment. Both of these traits stem from one: practicality. Cassian is an unbelievably practical man. He doesn’t bother with friends because he doesn’t see the point. He doesn’t get very emotional (even though he does have emotions) because what would that accomplish? He’s a no-nonsense, get-in, get-out, focus-on-the-mission kind of guy. This is likely a result of his childhood (or lack thereof), but it is also not a bad thing. It’s simply the way he operates.

When we first meet Cassian, he is burnt out. He is still a good spy, soldier, captain, ect., but he lacks conviction. He doesn’t fight because he wants to, but because he thinks he has to. He stuffs his opinions, and, at times, gets angry at himself for having them at all. As Chirrut puts it, he is in a prison of his own making. But fortunately for him (and all of us RebelCaptain shippers), he meets Jyn.

What Jyn means (to Cassian):

At first, Cassian thinks Jyn Erso is nothing but trouble. She is reckless, unpredictable, and selfish. In other words, she does what she wants, when she wants. And that is a very big problem to Cassian, who never does what he really wants to do, deep down inside. But as he soon learns on Jedha, what Jyn wants to do is pretty… great. He witnesses firsthand her kindness, bravery, and selflessness as she risks her life for random kids, risks her safety for his own, and risks getting shot for his only friend, a snarky droid. And she didn’t do any of it because she was told to, or because of the mission. She did it only because she wanted to. This awakens something in Cassian. Call it jealously, if you like. He wants what she has- the freedom to do the right thing, even if it means disobeying orders, even if he doesn’t have permission, even if it’s not practical. He wants to be free to choose. In his mind, Jyn quickly changes from a troublemaker to the embodiment of his trapped morality. And that’s when the real fun begins.

So, as stated above, Cassian is devoted to the Rebel cause. But as the movie progresses, he starts to feel a kind of loyalty to the cause that is Jyn. Unfortunately, these two causes don’t mix well. The Rebellion doesn’t need Jyn after Jedha, and Jyn doesn’t want any part in the Rebellion. And then there’s that whole issue of him being on a mission to assassinate Jyn’s father, who may or may not be a rebel in his own right. Cassian is a good soldier; he follows orders without question. Right now his orders are to kill Galen Erso. But his instincts (and Jyn, and Bodhi, and Chirrut) tell him that his orders are wrong. His interests are divided, his thoughts conflicted, and thus he becomes more and more frustrated. On Edu, he lashes out at everyone around him. But he’s not mad at them- he’s mad at himself for questioning the Rebellion, and he’s mad at the Rebellion for asking so much of him. 

What he does about it:

He doesn’t take the shot, obviously. And it’s easy to say, “He didn’t kill Galen because he cares about Jyn” or “He couldn’t pull the trigger because it didn’t feel right”. Both statements would be true. But there’s so much more to it than that. By choosing not to shoot Galen, Cassian finally admits that the Rebellion doesn’t necessarily dictate right and wrong in the Galaxy. He finally allows himself to see the flaws in his “the Rebel cause is always good and perfect” ideology. Finally, for the first time, he goes against direct orders and does what he wants, because he knows it’s the right thing to do. That’s why he looks so distressed on that ridge: he’s just busted through a huge barrier in his subconscious. And you know what? It feels like crap.

What changes:

At first, it seems like nothing is different. Even without his help, the mission is completed. Galen still ends up dead. Jyn still ends up angry with him. And when they fight, he defends himself, although every one of Jyn’s accusations are true. Even (dare I say especially) her Stormtrooper comment. In this one line, she has him pegged. Cassian refuses to admit it right away, but he is very much aware and ashamed of this fact. He is also aware that the Rebellion will never green-light a mission to Scarif with the evidence they currently possess. Thus, he finds himself at a fork in his road: Does he continue submitting to the Alliance, to his commanding officers, to his cause, even if their next decision will be the wrong one? Or does he follow Jyn into what he knows, in his heart, will be the best hope for the Galaxy? Thank the writers, he chose the latter.

I see a lot of posts talking about the times Cassian came back to Jyn. But what a lot of people (including myself) fail to notice right away is the most important time- the time he stands in front of her and so many others and says, “I believe you.” All the other times are vital (life-saving, in fact), but this time, it’s different. He isn’t acting on instinct; he isn’t rescuing her; he isn’t making excuses. He is making a conscious, life-altering choice to break free from the Rebellion, from the only life he’s ever known, and take up her cause. Finally, he frees himself from his prison and does what he wants. And the irony is that siding with Jyn is not just the right choice, but the practical and loyal one, as well.

And above all that, he knows he isn’t dying alone. 

It’s probably not the end he’d asked for; it’s more.

OKAY, SO. LET’S HAVE A TALK ABOUT HELGA HUFFLEPUFF. BECAUSE. I HAVE SO MANY THINGS TO SAY.

Here’s the thing; in my head, Helga Hufflepuff has always been a soldier. Yes, she’s kind and fair, but she also knows when a good hex or a punch in the face is the only solution. This does not happen often. She’s friendly and accepting and patient. But when someone threatens her friends, or her family, or her students, that someone better be prepared to have her wand aimed at them. Or better yet, a sword. Use what you know and all that, and while she’s great with her hexes and curses and even some charms used in a way her old mentor would definitely not have approved of, there’s just something incredibly satisfying in meeting someone sword to sword. She and Godric spars every now and then, though it’s clear he’s more of a dueler than a soldier. But Helga. Helga joined the war when she was 15, and she never regretted it. It was grueling, and it was painful, and she watched so many of her companions fall. But she joined for a reason – to protect (her family, her little nephews and nieces and all the children of her village) and to, one day, try and change the world enough that war wouldn’t be necessary. She fought for years, rising in rank as fewer and fewer of her friends were left, and she refused to give up. This was for the children. This was for the future.

When she was 23, she became general. And at 24, the war finally ended. And then she had to find something else to do.

She went back to her village, to the little houses and fields and her family. And for a while she was content, but not for long. She wanted to do something, because that was the reason she joined the war in the first place. For change. She wanted peace, and quiet, and a place to call home. But when she had it, she realized she only knew how to fight. And she was not going to accept that.

She went to find her old mentor, an aging wizard who kept forgetting his wand in odd places but who also knew a lot of spells and had more magical books than she had seen anywhere else in her life (later, when she met Rowena Ravenclaw and saw her collection, she would stare at it for ten minutes and then just go “nope” and walk out of the room). She asked him to teach her as much as he could. What he’d taught her before she left for the army was useful, but if she was gonna change the world she needed more.

He listened to her, listened to her reasons and her dreams and then he sat her down with a cup of tea and started talking about magical theory. Most of her went over her head. She listened anyway.  And she kept coming back. And when she realized how many children he’d helped out through the years (her among them), she asked him about that. He started spouting even more magical theory. And she kept listening. And when it was over and he said he couldn’t teach her anymore, she knew more about accidental magic and magical cores than she thought possible. And she was satisfied, because this was what she needed to know. Something that could help. Something that could change a life, or two, or a hundred, if you only had the people to teach it to. This was for the children. This was for the future.

And then she met two wizards and a witch, constantly bickering and joking and everything in between. And the wanted to start a magic school. Of course she went with them. It was the purpose she had been looking for. It was a way to do what she’d always dreamt of.

They started planning how to do it, and moved into Godric’s family castle up in Scotland. As they decided to split the students into four groups, Helga started to get irritated. She had spent half her life fighting a war, she knew that you couldn’t always get the brave or the smart or the cunning. You had to use the resources that were available. Anyone could become a good soldier (or student, she supposed) if they were trained properly. 

She was a general, and she’d take anyone who wanted to learn. She was a soldier, and she’d take anyone who would work hard, because that’s all you need to change the world. She was a 15 year old girl who joined the army, and she remembered what it was like when people judged you for your bravery, for your intelligence, for your strength. She was a 26 year old veteran, and she would punch anyone who said you couldn’t learn because of something as stupid as who you are. In the face. They’d deserve it, for implying that her students weren’t good enough.

Headcanon [avengers x reader]

A/N: Now, this not exactly what you asked for. I started with your request at first but I got carried away. #sorrynotsorry

  • All the avengers would be very welcoming from the very start
  • At first though they would not take you on random missions because you’re new to all this and they still don’t have the whole dynamic set with you 
  • They do not allow you to leave the avengers base at night because you’re still new but you sneak out with Peter’s help and STEVE KNOWS BUT DOESN’T SAY A WORD
  • Since Tony was the one who recruited you he’d always try to make sure you got your share of missions but he’d also be very protective of you because if something happened to you it would be on his hands
  • Tony finds out about your sneaking out and looses his calm-”If something happened to you do you know what I’d have to go through?!!”- and you actually feel his wrath but Pepper handles it thankfully. You apologise and promise to be careful.
  • The avengers would want to get to know you so you’d always be a part of their lazy Saturday nights and random 2 day vacations which happen rarely because everyone is so busy
  • Once you’ve had enough experience (usually after 5 missions) you start accompanying them on tougher missions
  • You work excellently well with Natasha and Bruce and are often a part of their missions
  • When the avengers and you finally become close, they start to loosen around you and you don’t feel out of place anymore (not that you felt that a lot before, they were very encouraging)
  • Sometimes you’d screw up on missions and then you’d come back to the avengers base feeling useless but they would always make you feel better by telling you how everyone isn’t perfect and taking you out for ice cream.
  • You have your fair share of fights with the avengers and during those times you’d feel miserable but then they’re your family, you realise, and it always works out. Most fights would be how careless you were on missions and you risking your life. You tell them it’‘s your duty to do so as an avenger and they understand but can’t help but be protective.
  • Over time they treat you like their equal because when you are new, it makes them want to keep you as safe as possible and they feel that you are a responsibility
  • Natasha and Wanda are always there to help you out with girl trouble (or any trouble for that matter because they’re so considerate) 
  • Party nights with Natasha are a blast because she knows all the best places. Clint often accompanies you guys and it’s fun watching him fail at dancing (this is how you get close to Clint)
  • Tony and Pepper always act like they’re your parents and are controlling but you secretly love it 
  • Spending time away from the Avengers and with your real family but still missing them. 
  • Thor treats you like any other lady and you guys are not very close but he’s so much fun to talk to and you learn so much about Asgard and the gods. He slips it to you that Loki may have taken a liking for you and you feel shocked
  • Sam and Bucky are your best pals and you hang out with them often and love listening to them bicker with each other. The three of you love to gang up on Steve and prank him with Natasha’s help because the old man is so queit all the time Wanda feels very bad for him.
  • Steve is your go-to-person because he knows so much and is always willing to hear you out and what you’re going through. He also nurses you when you’re sick or injured because that’s what he does for everyone else He’s such a mom
  • Bruce is a little reserved but you often try to talk to him and he actually likes it sometimes. He starts to control his anger better thanks to you
  • You like sitting on the terrace of the new avengers base and spending time with yourself, thinking about what a wonderful family you have. You do this until Bucky comes looking for you- “Where’s my slugger??”-and lifts you up like you weigh nothing and throws you in the pool.
       + He joins you shortly after and you two love competing with each other; who can swim the fastest, who can hold their breath longer
       + “You have a metal arm, Bucky! That’s not fair!!!”
  • Combat training is best with Natasha and Clint.
  • Vision becomes a yoga freak and wants you to join him but Wanda always gets you out, taking your place instead. She enjoys it because she obviously likes Vis and you ship them so much. You and Peter even set them up for a date.
  • Peter loves your company and so do you. You often go to fairs and malls with him and he’s just so adorable, you want to protect him at all costs
  • When you, for some reason, cry in your room and don’t come out for hours, Steve or Bucky come rushing for you and just hug you, not saying anything but just hold you while you let it all out
  • Pillow fights !! With !! Them !! Tony won’t play because he says he’s got work but it’s just that he’s old
  • After you’ve been single for so long, Nat and Wanda try to set you up with people they know and you refuse because you can’t just randomly go out with a guy/girl
  • Peter getting tired of you rejecting so many people- “Then just go out with me then, you lonely thing!”
  • Constant teasing about your bf/gf from the avengers 
  • Choking from laughter countless times because Bucky and Sam can’t control their wit and Steve getting all worried because you choked and Bucky rolling his eyes

You weren’t entirely sure how you had ended up in this situation. Of course you knew you were going to see him. There was no way around it. He was your brother’s roommate, but you had come to hang out with your older brother because you missed him. Jared was only two years older than you and you had done everything together growing up.

You knew he lived with Jensen but you had thought you would only have to endure his best friend while you were at the apartment. You certainly hadn’t pictured yourself sitting in a bar filled with bimbos helping your brother pick out a rebound girl for his best friend, that was for sure. If you had thought that was how you would be spending your Saturday night you would have stayed in Austin.

You knew Jared wasn’t doing it on purpose, but it didn’t stop you wanting to kick his stupid face in every time he pointed in the direction of some blonde with her boobs hanging out.

Okay, so, I don’t normally post my own things, I usually just reblog other people’s wonderful and, frankly, amazing stuff, but I need to get this out.

I’ve been reading lots on how Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s ratings are bad, and to be honest, the second and third seasons were not the best. But the show needs to be renewed because here’s the thing: girls need heroes too. Not just Captain America or Iron Man - they need female heroes. They need to know that heroes don’t always have powers. Melinda May never needed powers to become a legend, she honed those skills herself. She became a hero because she chose to be one, and Grant Ward was not a hero, despite the many chances given to him, because he chose to not be one. Daisy, or Skye, was a hero before she even got her powers because despite her past with the Rising Tide and an abusive childhood, she chose to do some good. 

Girls need to know that being weak and breaking down is alright because it is a human thing and not a silly, girlish weakness. They need to know that silence can mean strength and dresses don’t stop you from fighting. They need to know that being a scientist, a person who loves learning, does not equate to having square glasses and dull clothes and no friends. They need to know that there are different kinds of strength and bravery and love. They need to know that you can have accents on your tongue and colour on your skin but it doesn’t matter because you are more than what men label you. They need to know that they don’t need a man to complete or define them, that they are extraordinary by themselves. They need to know that despite everything, despite the impossible, they can succeed because the only person you need to believe in you is yourself. They need strong women to look up to so they can learn to become them.

I’m fifteen years old. Asian. A second-year university student in a developing country with an anxiety disorder. It means everything to me to have an Asian female character to be able to look up to and to have so many other well-rounded female characters. When I feel like I’m too small, too young to be in university, and people call me a nerd, I think of Jemma Simmons and her two phDs in fields Coulson can’t pronounce and I smile at them. When I walk through dark alleys filled with shady men on my way home and my mom tells me to be careful, I think of Melinda May and her fearlessness and I become a little braver. When people tell me that I can’t possibly be smart enough to pass a class, that everything I say is only a bravado, I remember Peggy Carter and tell them I know my own value. I pass by them three weeks later with a certificate full of A’s. When I feel like I can’t possibly go on I think about Bobbi Morse unwilling to apologize for what she believed was right and if she can be that strong, I can at least be half as strong. I think about being different and Daisy Johnson will remind be that being different can mean making a difference, and as long as I’m showing people that a tiny, little Asian woman can kick their asses in class, then I’m making a difference because I’m showing them that we can, that I belong here as much as they do. And that is what Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. shows too. Or at least, the part I love most about it. The strength, the diversity, the equality, of women. And that is why, when people ask me what S.H.I.E.L.D. is about, I say, “protection.” Because S.H.I.E.L.D. protects me from the darkness of life, it gives me a place to fall back on, a place to remind me that I am strong enough to go through each day, and when I do go through each day, it is those ladies who poke my shoulders and nudge my chin up, giving me the confidence to look at life in the eye and tell it that I am more than whatever it throws at me.

Since I can’t do much to affect the ratings from where I live, I suppose I’ll just let my fondness and my attachments to these character out and hope that abc realizes how fundamentally important it is to have a show which gives girls the strong women and the representation they need to look up to, and that despite past mistakes, season 4 (especially 4x15) has been incredible.

Small addition cause when last night I posted this little rant I did not expect so many notes but I’d like to add that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. also has female antagonists, it doesn’t portray women in black and white, good or bad. The characters are so completely human and not exaggerated. It portrays women as they are. Jemma has panic attacks and Daisy made some wrong choices but they are both more than capable of saving the day using only their minds. It shows that bad things happen sometimes and you can be forced to make hard choices and all you can do is choose what do to next and that doesn’t make you evil or bad. It shows that women are capable of being villains, that we’re not just angels. And that is important because it reminds girls that being good is a choice, that we have the potential to be otherwise, that we can make men fear us as much as we can make them respect us. It shows that sometimes we make bad choices and people will think the worst of us for doing what was right but despite our human flaws we need to remember to put on our own oxygen masks first before trying to fix things. There’s a post somewhere about how Melinda May left Providence in 1x19 and she left for herself because the environment was too toxic and that speaks a lot to me because it reminds me to take care of myself and my anxiety first and leaving a place that no longer is healthy is alright. I’ve found my social anxiety taking hold of me less since I’ve found strong women, and more specifically, Asian ones too, to look up to. Because they show me that it’s all human to feel like that, and they have so many flaws but they can also save the world, and most important, save themselves. Real or not, the characters have had a profound impact on me. For that I have to thank the writers and the amazing actors. To the person who said to tweet this to the creators, by all means, go ahead since I don’t have twitter. But I realised I didn’t thank the writers and the actors last night when they’ve given me those wonderful characters, both the women and the men.

I rewatched Winter Soldier last night (because literally what else am I supposed to do the night before I see Civil War)

And it was still great. Obviously. But you know what the best scene is?

None of the awesome action scenes. None of the Stucky fanfic fuel. None of the scenes with Falcon (somehow? Falcon’s so freaking awesome, I can’t believe I just said that he’s not the best part of a thing he’s in).

The best scene is this one:

Remember this? Basically, Cap just told everyone over the intercom about Hydra infiltrating Shield, and how, if you’re not Hydra, trust no one, and fight back if you can. 

In the speech, Cap acknowledges that “If I stand alone” (that is, if no one wants to step up, because, fun fact, guns are really scary), then so be it.

And then Hydra’s resident Mr. McMuscle Man Brock Rumlow up there walks up to this lowly Launch Technician (Cameron Klein is his name, played by Aaron Himelstein) and orders him to launch Project Insight (aka Hydra’s evil plans).

Five minutes ago, Cameron had one job, and it was to press a few keys and launch this thing. Sure, he’d heard about Cap becoming a fugitive, and that was weird (and sounded kinda sketchy), but hey, he works for the good guys, right?

But now the game has changed. Launching this thing is a bad idea. 

Cameron pauses as Rumlow demands him to start it up. And Cameron refuses.

Rumlow pulls out a gun and points it straight at Cameron’s head. And Cameron panics; heck, he’s practically holding back tears already. But he still says no. “Captain’s orders,” he explains.

You know why this is the best scene in the movie? Because Cameron reminds me of someone. Someone that people watching the movie are already pretty familiar with.

Cameron is the guy who may not have the muscle or the skills to be a soldier or a spy, but he wanted to help make the world a better place, so he did what he could. He got a job at Shield, he followed the orders of people he thought he could trust, and when he realized the truth, he stood his ground and did the right thing. He hasn’t gone through any training, he has no powers or skills or suits of armor. He didn’t even know Sharon Carter was armed and would be able to get him out of harm’s way. He thought he was about to die. But he wasn’t going to stand by and let evil triumph.

And that’s despite the fact that Cap had EXPLICITLY given him permission to do so. That’s what he meant by “If I stand alone.” Cap was saying that if there’s a gun pointed to your head, it’s not cowardly to give up. That’s okay. It doesn’t make you a bad person. If a grenade gets tossed your way, you’re allowed to run away.

But Cameron chose to jump on top of the grenade instead.

I’ve heard people say “Steve Rogers is a hero with or without the serum,” and other people say that’s kind of a cheesy thing to say, but if you want proof of that statement, Cameron is it. In a 90-second or so scene, this movie perfectly emulated what it means to be a hero even if you have a desk job. Even if you don’t look like you take steroids. Even if nothing eventful has ever happened to you until one moment when everything in your life changes, YOU CAN STILL BE A HERO.

I don’t care if that sounds cheesy or hokey. This scene is incredible. Cameron Klein is incredible - so incredible, in fact, that he got a cameo in Age of Ultron on Fury’s Helicarrier.

Yeah, someone (I’m guessing Sharon) was so freaking impressed at his bravery that they recommended him to serve on Fury’s staff (and, after Winter Soldier, the amount of people Fury trusted could probably be counted on one hand). And he’s in charge of the evacuation - which was LITERALLY THE REASON Fury shows up at all. Not military backup, not surveillance. Evacuation of civilians. And Fury gave Cameron that responsibility.

Because that  guy up there may be the face of a nerd, or a gofer, or a desk clerk.

But it’s also the face of a person who won’t back down. Even when his world is being turned upside down, even when his life is on the line, this is the face of a man who will always do the right thing.

This is the face of a hero.

Now, Marvel’s Damage Control is an upcoming TV show about the normal folks. The ones without powers who always seem to be in the background but may have a lot more depth than they let on.

And I’m gonna try not to be too upset if I don’t see this guy’s name in the cast list, but man I’m hoping I do, because Cameron Klein is a hero.

It’s some SidLInk drabble. Not even really drabble. I just kinda wrote a story with a very brief and glossed over plot that I explained in weird clumps of paragraphs at a time.

Okay look everyone’s got their own opinions about the CP characters at Hogwarts and I love hearing all the arguments for one house or the other but I hate when people get so aggressive with “they could never be in this house ever” because it’s so wild to me because there literally isn’t a right or wrong answer because the coolest shit about Hogwarts houses is it’s all subjective and the majority of characters can fit in any of the four houses (if you’re not a COWARD about it) because your house is all about what you feel and where you want to go in life and I’m rambling but THE BOTTOM LINE IS…any character can fit anywhere and that’s the beauty of it.

EXAMPLE

My boy Bitty

  • Hufflepuff - BOY IS HERE FOR HIS FRIENDS. He would drop anything for them and has occasionally been known to take on the role of Haus Mom (occasionally). He’s loyal to the death and would definitely fuck up a LAX bro if it was in defense of a teammate. He’s also such a hard worker! Like damn boy joined this college hockey team and he was scared in the beginning but he gave it his all and met with Jack at ass o’clock in the morning every day to get better and help his team and half of what he does is for other people honestly he’s the actual best friend you could have.
  • GRYFFINDOR - Do you know how brave this tiny Georgia gay boy had to be to move across the country into a different climate zone to spend all of his time with COLLEGE ATHLETES? Especially after everything he went through with his high school football team like damn my boy is tough as hell. He’s scared so much in the beginning but he doesn’t give up, he keeps going forward, no matter what Jack or the coaches say against him and honestly that’s the definition of bravery. 
  • R a v e n c l a w - Everyone can get up on out of here with that bullshit about ‘being good in school = Ravenclaw’ I will not stand for it. Ravenclaw is about ingenuity and creativity and you cannot tell me that Bitty isn’t creative as hell. With all his new pie recipes and ability to create any kind of dessert in less than an hour with any supplies available, Bitty is a creative mastermind. Does everyone remember the first pie he created with nothing but a cabinet full of Sriracha??? He would be a legend in Ravenclaw.
  • Slytherin - This one was actually a little hard for me, but I’m sure some of you could come up with a better argument. But Bitty is a determined and ambitious and there’s no way that can be denied. I actually think Slytherin would have been a good place for Bitty, because the houses are a whole lot about figuring things out about yourself, and I think Slytherin would have taught Bitty how to stand up for himself more. He obviously has strong opinions about his friends and others, and he’s determined and driven as all hell (again, fuck o’clock morning training sessions and ignoring everyone who made him feel like he didn’t belong on the team), but I think he has a bad habit of trying to put everyone else first. Bitty isn’t the most obvious Slytherin to me, but I can definitely see it as an option for him and think he would have made his fellow Slytherins proud (and very full of pie).

In conclusion: You can do this with any character, I love Harry Potter so much, and this post had no point thank you for your time.

Becoming a more active practitioner through everyday magic

Four years ago if you asked me what it took to be an active magical practitioner, I would have told you that it took spells upon spells cast, rituals every weekend, elaborate offering ceremonies, and so on. If you had told me about “everyday” magic, I would have pouted and complained that it wasn’t “real” enough. Shame on me!!

But the truth is, you can be a “practitioner” without formal spells, rituals, and ceremonies. What makes us practitioners, seekers, whatever you like to call it isn’t the activities, but the beliefs. I also don’t want to make it seem like you must be cramming lots of magic in to your daily life to be a proper practitioner; it is quite alright to be a nonpracticing practitioner, and that is a completely valid path.

However, some of us would like a little more active practice in our daily lives. After all, we have been given a magic wand. What is the fun in letting it collect dust in the cabinet? I think doing practical, everyday magic is loads of fun. It also has the added benefit of giving you practice and experience outside of big spells and rituals which many people don’t have the time, energy, or supplies for.

What do I mean when I say everyday magic? I mean putting small amounts of magical energy behind mundane actions to turn them in to magical actions. When done regularly throughout the day this can turn a regular day in to a very magical one. This kind of everyday magic can be done again and again in any situation that you like, to help support you, ease your burdens, and improve your quality of life.

Any situation can be made magical, from drinking your morning juice to taking a walk down the sidewalk. It is up to you, as a practitioner, to decide when and where you are going to take “everyday” and add the magic. I will give several generalized spells below that you can adapt to everyday situations.


Stirring Magic in to Liquids

Useful for tea, coffee, beverages, soups, elixirs, etc.

This magic will take effect once the liquid is consumed. Or, the liquid may passively give off the effect in to the room.

Take a wooden or metal spoon; metal conducts energies more easily. You may also use your pointer finger on your right hand if you prefer.

Strongly imagine what magical effect you would like to occur. In my morning coffee I like to stir bravery and boldness. For you, perhaps you would like to stir in peace or calmness (the opposite of anxiety). In a hearty soup you may wish to stir happiness and coziness. In a brew meant to affect the ambiance of a room, perhaps a general positive energy or cleansing vibration is best.

Take the spoon or your finger and stir the brew clockwise, while vividly imagining the effect you want to take place. Imagine that this effect is literally being stirred in to your liquid, just as if you were stirring cream in to it. At a certain point you will feel as if this magic is complete, but if you doubt yourself, rest assured the spell is complete after nine stirs.

Then, you must seal the spell. You can say “so mote it be.” I like to clap or snap my fingers. Immediately consume the beverage or set it aside to allow its ambient effects to take place.

If you prefer your liquid to take something away, stir it counter-clockwise. For example, to cure anxiety, stir clockwise for peace, or counter-clockwise to reduce anxiety itself. Do not combine clockwise and counter-clockwise stirring in the same liquid.

Exhaling Energies

Releasing energies to either fill a room or be dissipated.

Inhale deeply and be acutely aware of what energies are inside of you. Maybe you are filled with beautiful energies that you want to share with the world. Maybe you are filled with negative energies that need to be released so you will feel better.

If you are filled with negative energies, try going outside if possible or in to an open space where the air and winds can help dissipate your energies.

Inhale again. As you inhale with focus, energies will be drawn towards your lungs where they can be naturally expelled. Inhale until you feel very certain that the energies are in your lungs and ready to be moved away.

When you are prepared, take a final deep breath and imagine the energies are scooped up on the air in your lungs, ready for transport. As you exhale, do so deeply, so that there is not one trace of air left in your lungs.

If you are exhaling negative energies send a wish on your breath that the winds dissipate your energies and neutralize and purify them. If you are exhaling beautiful energies for others to enjoy, just let them sit.

Inhale and exhale several more times until you feel clean and purified.

Another excellent way of dispelling negative energy is to exhale through pursed lips, like how people do when they’re pissed off. That is a real magical technique of releasing negative energies and stress. I do it often at work, and it really helps.

If you want to try something more advanced, this technique also works with talking and singing.

Applying Substances to Your Body

Add energies directly to your body or clean away negativity.

If you are using soap, lotion, makeup, or any substance that is added to your body, try this brand of magic.

First, intensely visualize what you want to occur. It could be a beauty spell to clear skin and make it soft and delicate. It could be war paint to make you stronger, or a mask to glamour yourself. As you hold your cleanser/lotion/etc., you must simply believe that when you apply it, the effects you desire will take place.

Rub in clockwise circles to bring things (beauty, power, grace, protection) and counter-clockwise circle to take things away (blemishes, fear, clumsiness). If circles do not apply to what you are doing (as is the case with spritzing on perfume or applying eyeliner) do not worry about it, just do your thing along with visualization.

Once you are done applying your substance, seal this spell by saying “so mote it be” or any other closer you use. If the substance requires rinsing off, as is the case with soaps, do so after the closing.

This type of magic can be used when applying lotion, soap, cleansers, hair products, makeup, perfume, cologne, body sprays, etc.

Quick Object Enchantments

Good to make an everyday object magical in the short term.

This quick enchantment won’t last long but depending on your level of skill it should be good for an hour or two. Remember that the magical enchantment should reflect the mundane uses for the object. Use your glasses for an enchantment to see lies, or your shoes for an enchantment to stand strong.

Hold the object and vividly imagine what you want to happen. Find a center of power within yourself – for many it is the solar plexus or spine.

Using your imagination, visualize that some of that energy comes out through your hands and in to the object you are holding. Wildly and with an iron-clad will, truly believe that the object you are holding is being infused with magical intent. Absolutely see within your mind that what you desire to occur will occur when you use the item. There is no question about it – your enchantment will work.

As soon as you feel the true faith that your object is enchanted, seal the spell by saying “so mote it be” or your preferred method of sealing. Wear, use, or otherwise interact with the object as normal and its enchantments will take effect immediately.

Stiles:

  • I mean. the sarcasm. i too, use sarcasm and humor as a defense, in literally every situation.
  • the fact that he canonically has anxiety and panic attacks and social anxiety like that’s so?? important to me?? and he’s so in touch with it and it’s such a big part of his character but it also doesn’t rule his life and that’s just so important to me x2
  • his fierce loyalty. for a slytherin, the dude really does have some hufflepuff characteristics. he would die before he betrayed any of his friends, and is always on guard against any threat toward them
  • i also really love the fact that he is inherently suspicious of everyone. it’s a flaw, but it’s important to me because i can #relate and i think it says a lot about him as a character. not only is he loyal to his friends, he’s protective of them, because he can’t believe he has them and doesn’t want anything or anyone to break them apart. he wanted them to all stick together for college. that’s so precious? stiles stilinski loves his friends with everything in him 2kalways
  • going off of that, i love how deeply he loves?? like whether it be his dad, or scott, or LYDIA, he just loves with everything he has and so selflessly it’s heartbreaking like what the fuck save some for yourself you ball of mush.
  • i mean, he’s Too Smart. he’s the one who Always Figures It Out. he’s clever and observant and PERSISTENT when it comes to solving mysteries and figuring shit out and he’s gonna do so well in the FBI my son
  • his moral grey area is also very fun. me too stiles, me too. 

Lydia: (i have spent a significantly longer amount of time diving into who Lydia is than Stiles, so this could be even more extra than his list.)

  • her fear of vulnerability. it is extremely hard for her to let anyone see all of her at once, and she’s reluctant to show genuine emotions. this has changed quite a bit, through the seasons, but you still get that sense sometimes that she’s uncomfortable in intense emotional situations, and that hits my core man.
  • she’s insanely brave. we see this really early on, like in 2x11 (EEP) when she wanted to help jackson and had literally no method of defending herself but she was about to march into battle anyways. and now that she’s come into her powers, that bravery is still there, but it’s more confident now, like she’s not sacrificing herself anymore, but actually fighting.
  • my girl is a literal genius. deadass going to win a field’s medal. the actual reason i haven’t dropped out of school yet. and i love love LOVE the slow progression of her owning her intelligence and letting people know about it, from pretending she didn’t know a cougar was a mountain lion, to molotov cocktail, to “i read”, to slipping in little Lydia-isms here and there, to Kira in season 5 literally baffled at the fact that she used to pretend to not be smart. I’m so proud of my baby. that’s my girl.mp3
  • lydia martin exists unapologetically, and that’s kind of always been the case, now more so. she is here, and she is HER, and if you don’t like it, that’s fine, you can watch her perfect strawberry blonde hair sway as she walks away from you not giving a fuck.  
  • her development into someone who stands up for herself, removes herself from toxic situations, and fights for what’s right. this is where the pack really comes into play in her evolution, and it’s truly one of my favorite things. before allison and scott and stiles and the rest of the pack, she had never experienced or seen real love and friendship and what it can do, and once she had them supporting her and started fighting The Good Fight, she gained so much strength for herself and realization of what she deserves. (which is the world btw)
  • lydia martin rocks kickass outfits, on point makeup, beautiful hair, and HEELS most of the time, all while being an actual genius/badass in every sense of the word. she enjoys looking nice and spending time on her appearance, but it never takes away from the fact that she’s the smartest person around and could ruin you in a single “AAAEEE!” ?? lol this is really important to me because i love looking nice every day but i’ve legit had people question my intellgence because of it, and lydia just helps me to say fuck you to those people.

Your stop in New York City alongside your best friend, Newt Scamander, had become a bit more adventurous than you two had initially planned. With the help of the new ‘friends’ you had made, you tried to work together to recapture them.

You didn’t dislike the new people you had met. In fact, Queenie was perhaps your favorite. Her constant smile and bubbly personality were welcoming and you warmed up to her rather quickly. Jacob, the no maj, was friendly and caring; someone you definitely enjoyed being around. Tina, however, seemed to capture Newt’s attention quite quickly and ever since he had spend nearly most of his time with her. Besides the fact that she had tried to turn you both in to MACUSA, Newt seemed to fancy her and seemed to pay less attention to you which honestly made you feel pretty awful. Newt had been by your side for years and you couldn’t imagine your life without him. He was like the sun in the sky and the stars at night for you. 

You were currently in search of one of Newt’s creatures, the Demiguise also known to you and Newt as Dougal. You were inside a Department store that was adorned in Christmas decorations and you were all huddled behind a giant mass of decorative wrapped gifts.

Every alarm bell in his damaged, split brain should have gone off and warned him away. But Marc had always been impetuous and rash. He enjoyed living wild and free. He loved skirting the edge of the cliff, running on the precipice of the road, banking too close to the curve. Heat radiated through the moment and if he didn’t close in, if he didn’t try for it, the moment would be smothered and die. It seemed so simple, so easy to do.

He leaned forward, clasping the hand in his own. Tilting his head ever so slightly, he watched and then closed his eyes and made that leap of faith. A leap that gathered all the suns and moons in the universe and brought their power to bear.

As Buck brought the S-92 lower to the ship, Marc flung himself out of the side, his cape catching the wind as it was meant to do. It felt a lot like flying and he reveled in it for only a second before shooting his web toward the main smoke stack of the cargo ship.

“Okay, but we have to take our time,” Marc said and lowered himself on top of Steve who shuddered with such pleasure, that Marc returned the favor. “God, you’re a sin to be made again and again.”

Steve smiled in return and that set his blood to boil. He ravaged Steve’s neck as he squirmed beneath Marc. Even as Steve searched his body, his big hand touching just the right places, Marc explored and tasted. He teased and bit at Steve’s nipples, catching the nipple between his teeth and tugging just enough to stretch it and edge toward pain but still so much pleasure.

That didn’t matter because Marc’s Captain was in front of him, beside him. They would fight the good fight together, side by side with a team Marc could trust. For the first time, he knew acceptance and love.

“We’re nomads,” Sam said and nodded. “A team without a country.”
