Hey! I was wondering, where does the title "Another word for never" come from? I hope you're doing well :) and I'm looking forward the third season of Duality!
I’m doing pretty well, thanks. Juggling about five projects right now because I signed up for three bangs that are all screaming for my attention lol. But creeping closer to the start of Duality Season 3 and getting more excited every day!
“Another word for never” was a line from the first scene I wrote for the series, which ended up getting cut before I even finished it because it slowed down the pacing of the first chapter too much. Keep in mind, this was back when Duality wasn’t a thing and the extent of my plans for the fic was something like 50k of action, angst, and pining that was basically a giant excuse for a dramatic and tearful Shatt reunion.
Anyway, the original plan was to start the fic on the day Shiro, Matt, and Sam were captured, just after Sam was sent away to a work camp, to establish Shiro and Matt’s relationship, and then as the story progressed to include a bunch more flashbacks to the week between the initial capture and the day Shiro attacked Matt to take his place in the Arena. In the first scene, Matt was panicking about what had just happened, and Shiro was trying to comfort him by saying they’d all make it home someday, and Matt bit back with, “Someday’s just another word for never.”
Obviously things evolved from there, but that exchange, and the contrast between Matt and Shiro that it highlighted–Shiro’s determined optimism vs Matt’s fatalistic snark, and the way Shiro grew more jaded the longer he stayed with the Galra army vs the way Matt grew into himself as a paladin–was still a major underlying theme of the story in its final form. So I kept the title and inserted just that little snippet of conversation into chapter 6, when Allura’s trying to comfort Matt after the fight with the first robeast.
