it pays to work in the media

I’ve wanted to talk for So Long about the portrayal of anxiety in YOI but I’ve been having so much trouble putting together what I want to say in the most effective manner. I kept trying to come at this in a more analytical fashion, but considering that this is such a personally important topic to me, I’m going to try a more emotional approach. Something I don’t normally do.

So really, to start off, I wanna say that I’m so damn thankful for the way Yuuri is written. Really, seriously. I don’t think I’ve ever had the ability to relate more to character; Yuuri is close to a mirror of my own experiences with anxiety and it’s so fantastic to have a model of development and growth for me and people like me. I found the portrayal to be frighteningly accurate, from types of thoughts, behaviors, mannerisms… I think the episode that stood out to me the most in terms of Yuuri’s anxiety was ep7, aka Yuuri’s on-screen panic attack episode.

The first thing I noticed was this:

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve found myself in that exact position. I bounce my legs when I panic, just like Yuuri is doing here. Head in his hands, breathing heavily, bouncing and jostling limbs. This isn’t the Mary-Sue cutesy portrayal of anxiety–this is a real anxiety disorder. It’s not pretty. It’s not easy. It can’t be fixed with a single word or a touch or a person. Quite frankly, it’s ugly and you lose control of your body.

What I’ve learned in 2016

1. Friendship is a matter of convenience.
It can be true and beautiful and fun and full of love until she moves to another city for college and finds 10 more people she can ‘connect’ with.

2. You don’t have to pursue a boring degree for a boring job. Yes, your passion is for things that make it harder to fetch money but you have one life. Do you really want to spend it doing something you don’t absolutely love?
If you’re passionate about something, no matter what, you will excel, you will thrive. That’s the key to real success. Not some statistics stating the most lucrative jobs and industries.

3. You will exercise. You will drink more water. You will eat healthier. Not because you’re not beautiful the way you are but because your body deserves to be treated better. It literally has carries you around, has your back and actually has your heart from that first moment to your very last.

4. If they are a bitch to others what makes you think they won’t be one to you when the time comes? How people treat others is always a tell tale of how they will treat you. Pay attention. It’s better than feeling like a fool 6 years later.

5. Cook your own meals sometimes.
You know just the amount of oil, salt and ingredients you want. You may not be a masterchef but you know what your stomach wants.

6. Surround yourself with happiness, inspiration and positivity and a very major part of that is social media. Who you follow is so important. Social media is supposed to be a happy and safe place for you. Choose the right people and the right works to fill your feeds because eventually those fill your mind and heart.

7. Nature is all healing.
It’s the one thing in the beautiful presence of which even the most talkative person like you feels the need to shut up. Nature requires no words. It’s completeness is something to learn from.

8. Your parents live a life apart from being your parents. They have moments you’re not a part of, moments you don’t even know. They have not only had a life before you but also a life with you being there that you don’t know about. That’s okay and that’s not something to be mad about.

9. People will leave you. Always.
Some in days, some in months. There are those who take decades and then there are those who never leave in physical form but withdraw all meaning and that’s when you must leave.
But just because people leave their stay doesn’t become any less wonderful or important.

10. Sometimes the only person you need at 3 am is yourself. Give yourself mode credit. You can always help yourself. It may just take a little longer and be a little harder but you don’t need another person to help you. You are enough. You are strong. You will never disappoint.

11. Music of all type is necessary. Songs that make you cry and the ones that make you think and then those that make you only want to dance.

12. Draw.
Everyone is an artist. And your drawings may look like those of a middle school kid but isn’t your joy just like hers?

13. Read more books. Yes, you’re older now and busier too but ‘busy ’ is an excuse and you know it.
Find time for something that saved you. Find time for something that you love.

14. Lipstick is life.
People may stare at you and they may get intimidated by certain shades but that’s okay, one smile and they will be at peace.

15. Click more selfies and click them without any shame.
If you’re happy, if you look at yourself and feel like capturing that one moment where you feel good about yourself - go fucking ahead.
Capture all your happiness, beauty and goofy-ness.
But remember, they are for you and not your social media.

16. There’s literally no way you can help someone without helping yourself.
And they may give you nothing in return and they may be ungrateful but who cares?
They aren’t half the person you are and you can shrug it off and move on but remember unlike you, Karma never forgets.
Also, karma is only a bitch if you are.

The darkest moment is the very moment before sunrise. It’s a fact.
So 2016 may have been your darkest time but that only means the sunlight of happiness and inspiration and love awaits you in 2017.

How long did it take you to finish animating episodes? Days-hours-minutes-seconds-?

Ha! It only takes a few miliseconds, kiddo.
Actually, we animators have finished our animated series long time ago, but the internet owners only allow the upload of one episode each four, five, six months or even each year. They pay us for saying we are really tired working and we have to record many progress of the animation to post it on our social media. You guys are manipulated, and you can’t escape from us.

Using My Phone Less

I’ve been trying to use my phone a lot less recently. For anyone out there in the same boat, here are a few things that worked for me.

  • Wear a watch
  • Buy an actual alarm clock
  • Delete social media apps. Access them on your laptop. Warning: For the first few days you might reach for your phone, look at it blankly, realise there’s nothing to see and you won’t even remember why you picked it up in the first place. #addiction #is #DARK

  • Download “Moment”, an app to help you quit apps: I’ve tried it for the past few weeks. My screen time has gone from an average 2 hours 45 mins to 50 mins a day. It’s free, but if you pay £3.99, you get added features, like a pop up reminder every time you’ve reached 10 mins of screen time (or whatever time interval you choose). It also has an option for your phone to literally lock up when you reach your limit, which I found hilarious when it actually happened. I was honestly mildly #shook.
FYI, the days in red were always the days I had Instagram downloaded on my phone.

LCD Soundsystem's Gavin Russom comes out as a transgender woman
LCD Soundsystem's synth player and technician Gavin Russom has come out as a transgender woman.

Gavin Russom, synth player and technician for the band LCD Soundsystem, came out as a transgender woman in a new interview with Pitchfork.

She says she took some time for self-care after the band’s 2016 tour and had the opportunity to spend time with other transgender women. She’s keeping her same name, but will go by she/her pronouns and begin presenting in a way that feels truer to herself.

A few excerpts from her interview, of which a portion is written in first person:

I’m 43 and I can identify that once a decade, I made a concerted effort to make my trans identity known. That includes a period of time when I was a child in the ’70s, when I was going through puberty in the ’80s, and then several periods throughout my twenties, thirties, and forties. What makes this time different is that I’m in a stable moment in my life. Working with LCD Soundsystem all last year and then having a solid block of time off to focus on self-care was really important for me. This is what came out of that. I don’t like coming out so much as a term, but sometimes it’s the only way to say it. […]

Up until this point, I felt comfortable working with my own gender fluidity, my own identification within the feminine end of the spectrum, and the politics that arise from those things through my music. Retroactively, this is a thread that goes through my entire body of work. It’s an interesting way to listen to it if you weren’t already getting that.

I feel very blessed because the world that I operate in is relatively open-minded. I mean, the electronic music world can be extremely bro-y and also close-minded and sometimes even worse than maybe a more traditional office job. However, at least where I’ve found myself, the people who are around me have been very supportive. I still had fears that I might experience consequences, mostly because I know so many trans women who have lost their jobs when they’ve come out. It’s a very unfortunate reality. There was a fear and awareness that my ability to do this really is a privilege—and it shouldn’t be, but it is. […]

It has been a process of paying really deep attention to what’s going on with me. I had a very significant moment very early on when I called my bank and the teller said, “Oh sir, thank you so much for calling us.” It’s so hurtful, and of course they don’t know—they’re just looking at a document that has a gender identifier. But it was so powerful to just be enough in my own body to say, “Whoa, that didn’t feel good.”

There was legitimately something unmanageable for me about living as a cis man. I was working so hard just to present this image of myself that ran very deeply counter to who I really am. There’s nothing theoretical or intellectual about that. It’s the physical thing in my body. It felt like there was almost another person constantly walking next to me being like, “Hey, hey, hey, pay attention to me, hey, hey, hey.” To some degree I wish I had been able to work through it sooner, but I’m also very glad that I worked it the way I did. Having gone through 42 and a half years of being in denial and trying to work through this stuff has given me a lot of experience.

Congratulations, Gavin. Thank you for sharing your music and your story.

To those Americans who haven't heard, or don't understand:

I know tumblr is American centric, I know that when attacks happen across Europe they get commented on, reblogged, information flooding my dash as my friends reblog. But, once again, an attack here in the UK is seeing little notice. So please, don’t ignore this. This attack is one that has taken 22 lives. 59 people have been injured. Children have died. Children.

Don’t ignore this. Please.

The Manchester Arena isn’t the first, or last terrorist attack that the North West, that England has seen. We’ve lived through the IRA bombings from the 1970s to the 2000s and then 7/7 in London in 2005. The IRA Bombers were known as the 10 pence bombers because they would go to a phone box, pay 10 pence and inform police or media that there was a bomb.

At this present moment in time, we’re horrified and in shock from it all. We’ve had bombings in Warrington, in Manchester before (my family had a terrifying time when an IRA bomb detonated in the Arndale Centre and my great-aunt was working there that day) and it’s stuck with us. Our memory of the Arndale Bombing in the 1990s by the IRA is a memory the community has in the North West.

We know the fear, the horror, the mind-numbing terror.

But we also know the feeling of needing to do something, to help. Taxi drivers turning off their metres. Local shops and businesses taking in the displaced. Do-gooders and kind people who just want to help offering to ferry loved ones to and from the city so they can find their missing loved ones.

This is something we do here.

We don’t have the lingering concern of school shootings, or attacks by men or women who own too many guns and have too little stability.

But we know bombers. We know terrorism. Whether it’s made by our government, by policy, or by wars we shouldn’t be fighting. We know this.

I had a friend ask me “why Manchester?” when I told them about the attack. My initial answer was that it’s a big, important city. It’s a good target for bombers to hit. Like London. Like Liverpool. But the truth is… In the UK, we have lots of cities, lots of places that are good targets because we live on top of each other. Our lives intersect on so many levels and our cities reflect this. So it’s not so much “why Manchester?” but more “why now?”, “why a concert?”, “what is gained by this?”

When the IRA bombed Warrington in the North West in 1993, their intention was to sow terror and to put pressure on the British government to withdraw from Northern Ireland. We know that they wanted Ireland to be united. We’ve known that for years.

What does Islamic State want? What does Daesh want? To sow terror, certainly. But what else? What else does bombing an Arena full of young women—girls, mothers, daughters, sisters—gain them?

This is what is so horrid for us here in the North West. We’ve lived with the knowledge of bombings being possible for decades. It’s ingrained in our past. My mother, my aunts and uncles. My brothers. My family. We’ve lived it all. We live it now.

So don’t ask, “why Manchester?” we know why. We know why. Warrington. Arndale. The Manchester Arena. We know why it’s us in the North West.

literally every single justification I’ve seen for this scandal has been complete bullshit

  1. he said it on live broadcast what if a kid has seen it!
    1. no he didnt this was on vixxtv and was uploaded by the company to vixxs youtube channel anyone who saw it would have actively seeked it out
  2. hes supposed to be a good role model!
    1. he is. jaehwan works so hard, hes extremely kind, he loves his family, friends and fans, hes constantly sacrificing his own comfort for better performances does swearing suddenly make him a bad person?
  3. hes negatively influencing kids!
    1. honestly what kind of idiot parent thinks vixxs content is appropriate for their middle school age kid vixx has released multiple songs about sex and even had a bdsm themed comeback they are clearly catering to older teens and women not middle school kids if your kid is 12 and watching vixxs content thats on you for not paying more attention to what kind of media your child consumes
  4. idols shouldn’t swear!
    1. zico, bobby, jimin, mino, jooheon, le, lim kim, narsha, gain, b.i, RAVI, honestly are we really gonna pretend like idols swearing is unheard of?
  5. he shouldnt behave like that on broadcast!
    1. vixxtv is not a broadcast. its not like this was being filmed by mbc and he wrote that. this is their own broadcast that was literally started as a platform for vixx to be honest and open with their fans
  6. this is sudden and unexpected!
    1. if youve been a fan of vixx for more than 0.5 of a second you would know that jaehwan is notorious for having a bit of a potty mouth
  7. it was rude to ravi!
    1. ive called friends who ive known for a few months ‘fucking bitch” in a joking way multiple times before wonshik and jaehwan have known each other for years i highly doubt wonshik took any offense
  8. its inappropriate to curse!
    1. lee jaehwan is 25. hes an adult, he has ever right to curse. shut up
  9. i dont like cursing!
    1. good for you go suck a bar of soap you self righteous bitch you can dislike cursing but that doesnt excuse you from attacking someone for cursing
  10. he shouldnt even be saying those words!
    1. i am immediately assuming that you have never said a single bad word in your entire life you must be perfect

The show made me do it....

Hi @tinkdw , @ibelieveinthelittletreetopper , @elizabethrobertajones I wanted to post this to a couple of meta writers / bloggers I follow here re my thoughts about Destiel.

Firstly, just so you know where I’m coming from, I’m a writer of fantasy/crime/thriller/romance fiction. World building a subtle development of characters is part of what I do.

I watch crime dramas – I’m horrible to watch them with because I ALWAYS work them out – because I PAY ATTENTION to what is on screen, both textually and sub-textually. I also believe that TV is an expensive media and what screen time there is is short. So if something has made it to screen, no matter how small, it is of significance. Writers, directors, actors, editors all felt this was MEANT to be seen. I also believe that just because two characters have great chemistry doesn’t mean they have to be a canon couple. (Morgan and Garica from Criminal Minds is one of the best one screen platonic friendships on screen, I’m glad the writers were brave enough to keep them that way and not push them into a relationship.)

I’m a whoivan so I am no stranger to fandom and there is no way you can be in ANY fandom and not know of Destiel.

Now, until last year I had not seen Supernatural. It was one on my watch list but never got around to it. So I decided to start with series one DVD and see how I got on. And ok, some of series one was a bit shakey, some of the stories not great… but the premise, the backbone of Sam and Dean, their relationship – THAT was great from the start and kept me watching. It still keeps me watching.

As I got to season 4, I wondered if everything I’d heard about Destiel was real. It wasn’t why I was watching, it was the brother’s journey that kept me going. Shippers are passionate, GIFS can be created to emphasize a point, but when those GIFS are out of context of the episode – did they still stand up as “Destiel”? So I went into season 4 open minded. (PS I’ve also had no issue accepting that Dean is a repressed bisexual – hints have been made all along, character building)

Oh.Dear. Lord. It’s real.

But let me take a step back. When watching S4 most of the time I was watching Cas on screen, his intensity with Dean appears to be him trying to work out the man he saved. His orders were to pull him out of hell, put him back together again. He did that, and in doing so he knew EVERYTHING about Dean until that point. He returned him to Earth the same bright souled, flawed human that he was, along with all his loves, fears, hopes and dreams. Everything he was, and everything he hid. His self loathing. Castiel KNEW everything about Dean.

But knowing someone and understanding them are different things. What I see in most of S4 is Cas trying to understand Dean. Because the man he put back together is not the man he sees and knows is really there. (He sees performing Dean before the other important people in his life do.)

Dean for his part mostly looks like his every hidden fantasy walked into the barn that day. And because it’s not a door he’s even prepared to peek through, it’s all unsubtle looks at Cas, his body language screams attraction when his actions say otherwise. (And “The Rapture” was fantastic as showing that he is drawn to CAS not JIMMY.)

S5 was seemed to build more on above, but if their plan was to end at S5 then you could say that they are brothers-in-arms. Castiel the angel that can’t quite figure out the human he saved and Dean the human who never felt worthy of this new friendship/crush, which also left him bemused.

S6, Dean with Lisa. Well this was where I was wondering if Destiel would be ticked to the curb. But no. Dean needed to experience what he thought he had wanted. What he believed his parents had before that November night.  He tells Lisa in S5 that when he pictured himself happy, if was with her – but the reality wasn’t what he wanted. He cared about them, loved them. But when he walked away from them after Cas took their memories, he wasn’t broken.

Cas in this season is clearly falling for Dean. He goes from intrigue and mild jealousy (Anna) in S4/5 to full on heart eyes by the end (The Man Who Would Be King) is just epic.

S7 – despite the reduced role of Cas, it was great for setting up grieving Dean for later seasons. When Cas is lost to the Leviathans, Dean is equal parts upset and angry for Cas’ actions. But in the end he still carried that trenchcoat around for months, in various cars. But he did the same with Bobby and the flask, and there is no ambiguity as to his feelings towards Bobby. For me he grieved the loss of family in both cases and in similar ways – that was until they both return. Dean’s reactions are different to the return of Bobby and Cas. Subtly different, but different never-the-less. (Then you compare the loss of Cas and Bobby in this series to S13? There is NO comparison. He hasn’t lost a friend/crush or father figure, he’s lost the absolute love of his life).

And Cas/Meg? Well there is a great relationship. Two great actors and chemistry, with an obvious set up for a possible “impossible romance” (which could have been enthralling in its own right if Destiel wasn’t pushed in my face 😉 ) but their chemistry worked so much better in the platonic sense.

I’m only half way through S8, Cas is out of purgatory and this is for me when Destiel the ‘romance’ is going canon. Benny’s reaction alone when Dean and Cas reunite is telling. You can see his brain going ‘friend my ass!’.

For the most part, what I’ve seen is subtle acting by all parties, a slow progression from strangers to comrades, to friends and now friends who are clearly falling for each other - it could have stayed platonic with some odd but explainable behavior between Cas and Dean. It is all there, on screen if you look. Now, I may be a few seasons behind but I know what is happening currently and I’m highly encouraged they are showing a deeply complex, touching and enduring love story where the characters have gone on an epic journey to find that love. The genders of those characters means fuck all.

I know for many of you what I’m saying is old news. But I wanted you to know that someone who has only recently started watching Supernatural and went in with an open mind, I can clearly see what is in front of me.The show made me do it. I ship Destiel. They are one of the greatest OTP’s of all time. It isn’t imagined. It isn’t exaggerated by GIFS.

For those of you who have studied this series into the minutest of details (and not just for Destiel) and those of us who are observant and see these small things as we have watched – we are being rewarded. For those who choose not to see, or have their own petty reasons for not wanting see such a powerful love story, well they are the ones losing out on something spectacular.

Wow, this ended up being longer than expected (a theme in my writing, haha!) and it didn’t go into any real detail!

Keep on meta writing and being awesome in this fandom - your blogs make me smile.

ten days of minimalistic living

have you ever wanted to add something to improve your life? like consistent exercise or clean eating? if you have, that’s great! you’re already 50% there.

however, have you ever thought about removing elements of your life instead of adding elements? if you have, you’re now 75% there.

if you haven’t, don’t worry, let me explain.

instead of adding elements to improve your life, minimalistic living aims at subtracting elements to improve your life. it targets areas in which you can simplify your life in the most easiest and effective fashion.

so with that being said, i’ve compiled 10 one-day assignments to help you begin your journey into minimalist living.

1. designate an hour for “you time”

choose a secluded place where you can disconnect from the virtual world. focus on what it feels like to be at peace and, if you feel inclined, jot down your intimate thoughts and feelings in a journal.

2. no complaints, no not today

complaining can easily become a habit. however, today try your best to not get frustrated at the man who is taking forever to order in front of you at starbucks or the woman who is walking too slowly in front of you.

3. clear out your email inbox

you know that email subscription you signed up for? the one that sends you emails all the time, but you forget to delete the emails or unsubscribe yourself from receiving future emails? yeah, you know the one. well, take time today to make your inbox spick and span.

4. disconnect and dream

instead of taking your phone to bed with you to check social media posts from besties and celebrities, leave your phone on your desk. your body needs sleep. social media will be there tomorrow morning.

5. remove one item from your to do list

you could probably complete everything on your to do list, but doing so may leave you burned out by the end of the day. so instead, choose the most important assignments and leave out the last one.

6. listen instead of waiting for your turn to speak

when talking to a friend, a family member, or a colleague, actually listen to what he/she is saying, then respond.

7. eat a meal without watching a movie or show

it’s easy to make dinner then plop on a couch with a plate full of food to watch your favorite netflix show. however, watching a show takes away from the eating experience. instead, sit and eat while paying attention to how the food actually tastes.

8. turn off notifications

notifications can easily interfere with your day. so for today, only check your social media accounts when necessary.

9. make two lists

make one list of things that make you happy. then make another list of things you do every day. adjust accordingly.

10. wake up an hour earlier

although you may classify yourself as a night owl, try becoming a morning person for one day. hop out of bed, make yourself a cup of coffee, and begin to conquer the day. you’ll be amazed at how much work you can complete with waking up one hour earlier.

if you try out any of these assignments and you show progress, feel free to individually message me. i would love to hear your story.

do have a lovely week ♥

23. “Just pretend to be my date.” request by anon.

Pairing: kacchako

Word count: short?? they don’t show this shit on mobile

Rating: t, cause Bakugou

Hope you enjoy ^^

——————————————–

“Pretend to be my date.”

Ochako rubbed her eyes, not sure if she was dreaming or not. After waking up at the sound of strong knocks at her apartment door, she expected if was one of her neighbors wanting to complain about something. What she didn’t expect, was to see Bakugou Katsuki, wild blond hair and angry red eyes, standing in front her.

“Bakugou…?”, she mumbled, voice raspy from being asleep just minutes ago. “What do you want?”

He gulped, as if he was swallowing his pride. “Pretend. To be. My date.”

His voice sounded odd and restrained, like he regretted saying them. Ochako blinked.

“Hum… I’m gonna need you to be more clear than that.”, she said, arms crossed, leaning on the door frame.

His scowl deepened, hands trembling. He was trying to hold some explosions back, that was for sure.

“To the goddamn party Best Jeanist’s gonna host!”, Bakugou blurted out, looking away from her.

Ochako had heard of the party. The now third best hero in the country decided to throw one of those fancy charity events, the profits destinated to a foundation that helped the victims of villain attacks and their families. It was a really nice initiative, but the invites were a bit expensive. The girl couldn’t afford to spend that much, now that she had to pay her own rent.

Which reminded her…

“And after three years since you last saw me, you decided to ask me out at 11:00 pm on a tuesday, because…?”

Bakugou flinched at her sarcastic tone.

“I’m not asking you out, stupid round-face!”, he said, running a hand through the back of his head. He had an undercut now, she noticed. “I just need you to go with me to this fucking ball and pretend to be my date. Don’t blow this out of proportion!”

“Wow, you really know how to convince a girl.”

It’s not like Ochako held any grudges from high school. Despite being a dick to her and all her friends, Bakugou had gone through a great development, and ended up becoming a not so unpleasant company at the end. However, after school was over, she hadn’t heard much from him. They saw each other from time to time, for work-related reasons, but she kinda felt hurt that he never return her calls or joined the rest of their friends when they hung out.

“Look, i know it’s been a long time”, he started, frowning at her hurtful expression. Taking in a deep breath, his stance got a little more relaxed. “And i… i’m fucking sorry, okay?!”

Her eyes went wide open. Bakugou Katsuki, apologising? Not something she ever thought of seeing in her life. He caught her impressed reaction, scowling and letting out a stressed sigh.

“I just, needed to focus on my career. It’s hard enough trying to go solo without any distractions. I don’t have time for it.” he muttered, looking genuinely honest. Her eyes softened a little. “This stupid party’ll be full of government people and potential investors. And i need to make a good fucking impression if i ever want to stop being just a sidekick.”

Ochako blinked, putting the pieces together. “So, you think i could make a good impression?”

He scoffed. “I’ve seen you on the magazines. TV shows. Posters. Gunhead sure knows how to use that round face of yours to promote his agency.”

She blushed, looking away from him. It wasn’t a lie. Gunhead wasn’t exactly the greatest example of charisma, and having her on his office had made a huge difference in his popularity. But Ochako wasn’t just a pretty face, and he knew that. They’ve been a great team during the last few years she’s been his sidekick.

“Besides, you’re good with people. You have this stupid positive attitude, and you know how to use words.”, she felt her cheeks warming up at the strange compliments. “Those old geezers will fall in love with you in the blink of an eye.”

“You, on the other hand, would just make them run away in terror.”, she pointed out, watching as his face curled up in a sneer.

“Yeah, smart-ass. But with you by my side, maybe they’ll actually hear what i have to say. Then, if we can convince them, they’ll land us the money to start our own office!”

She choked, not sure if she heard that right.

“Our office? D-do you mean… Are you proposing a partnership?”, Ochako’s eyes were wild. She must have gone crazy, Bakugou would never ask her that.

“It’s not like that, stupid!” he hurried his words, looking a bit flustered himself. “I mean, just until our names start to stand out as solo heroes. Than, we can on our fucking ways.”

She slowly nodded, starting to understand his track of thought. Going solo was really hard these days, with so many heroes popping out of nowhere. If you didn’t have the money, you had to really stand out from the crowd to catch the eyes of investors and get your office going. Then, there’s the hiring, administration, keeping track of the income, of the popularity, sometimes campaigns and other issues. At such young age, and with barely any resources, Ochako would never make it own her on.

Bakugou, although being one of the best of their generation, lacked every other quality a pro hero should have, such as charisma, patience and cooperativeness. Even if he had the money to start, he would certainly be demonized by media and other agencies would refuse to work with him. If they could rely on each other until they were well recognized as pro heroes, maybe there was a chance for both of them to achieve their goals.

“So? You in or not?”, she snapped from her thoughts, looking back at him. He looked impatient, hands on his pockets, staring at her with expectation. “I’ll pay for your entrance, even buy you a fucking dress if you wa—”

“I’m in.”

His eyes were wide for a second. He stared at her, looking for any trace of sarcasm in her face. “You… you’re in? Are you sure, round-face? Even if we can make it, It’s gonna be a long damn time before we can hire assistants, and there’s the management issue and—

“I said i’m in, Bakugou.”, she had a big smile on her lips, as he stared at her in awe. He expected her to say no, to laugh at him, to send him flying out of the fucking building. But not to actually accept his offer.

“I have some conditions, though.”, she said, and he raised a brow at her serious expression. “No baku-raging at the party. You’ll act like a gentleman, and agree with everything i say. And you’ll call me by my name, from now on. No snarky nicknames about my face.”

He sneered at her, rolling his eyes. “Fine, Uraraka. Anything else?”

She thought about it for a second. “Yes. If we do manage to start our own office, i’ll be the one who’ll name it. You’re awful with names.”

Bakugou’s eyes flared up at the insult.

“What?! What’s wrong with King and Queen of Explodo-Kills?!

At this, she slammed the door in his face, going back to her bed.

And this, was how hero agency Supernova was born, now one of the biggest offices in Japan.

The best thing about WNT boycotting

They aren’t just doing it for them.

Like, yes, they will be super stoked to finally get paid to do what they love, and that’s awesome. But they aren’t only asking for compensation for themselves.

They’re asking for youth and development team funding, they’re asking for advertising, they’re asking to grow the game.

They posted about it on social media so they can get attention, and what a lot of people in America love right now is women protesting for equality. But also, all this attention to Women’s Hockey, will probably work to increase revenue to Women’s Hockey. Campaigning for youth and development teams, campaigning for advertisement, will probably work to increase revenue to Women’s Hockey.

Listen, I don’t know what the real endgame is here besides getting pay for WNT, but I’m here for it.

USA Hockey is do or die

Memeing Into the Void: The Case That We Have Entered The Last Stage of Internet Culture

Conjecture: Internet culture, specifically meme culture, can be roughly divided into distinct movements associated with time periods, much in the same way that paintings can be categorized into their respective art movements. Here’s my best attempt at doing so:

The Original Meme Era (1993-2009): The foundational period of modern internet culture, the creation of the first internet memes, characterized mostly by sincere attempts at humor: lolcats, fails, rick rolling, rage comics etc.

The Ironic Meme Era (2010-2014): Internet memes become mainstream and accessible by popular media, in response meme elitism and ironic memes are born, characterized by parodies of other memes: dank memes, Dolan, ironic fandoms (Shrek, Bee Movie), montage parodies etc.

The Post-Ironic Meme Era (2015-2016): anti-memes, multiple layers of irony, memes begin to take on depressive and nihilistic overtones, irony and sincerity begin to become blended together and ambiguous: deliberate shitposting, bone hurting juice, bottom text, I have crippling depression etc.

The Last Meme Era (2017- )

Conjecture: There is an upper limit on how meta you can get; there are only so many levels of irony you can stack on top of each other before your conceptual framework implodes on itself. Let’s set aside the fact that Reddit is the Lyme disease of the internet for a moment and take r/Circlejerk as an example. The sub was created to humorously criticize the perceived manner in which greater Reddit had become a masturbatory echo chamber devoid of meaning or purpose. Naturally, it was only a matter of time before r/Circlejerk itself became an echo chamber, except this time with an even bigger superiority complex. Thus r/metaCirclejerk was created to make fun of the people making fun of reddit.  Naturally, r/metametaCirclejerk was formed next… but that’s the end of the series; there is no r/metametametaCirclejerk. This would be unnecessary and redundant, because once you get this many layers removed you lose track of who and what you’re responding to. The bottom drops out; r/metametaCirclejerk is much more about playing with the idea of meta-criticism on the Reddit platform rather than a direct mockery of r/metaCirclejerk itself. To put it more simply, I’m positing that once you get to about three layers of irony in any given media, the meaning begins to fall apart and you can go no further. This principle explains why we are currently in the final iteration of internet culture.

What is the Last Meme Era? It is nothing more than the self-cannibalization of the meme. Notice that every meme era is a direct response to the previous era, but there is no and can be no response to the Last Meme Era. The internet is bathing in its own digestive juices. To reject the Last Meme Era is in itself an expression of the movement.

This example is quintessentially representative of the Last Meme Era. Consider how many layers of culture you have to be familiar with to even understand what it means. The John C Miller meme itself exists exclusively as corruptions of other memes and furthermore is an anti-humorous rebuttal to the appropriation of internet memes by a private corporation for profit. The meme this image is based on (bone hurting juice) also exclusively exists as modifications of other memes, and is arguably a neo-dadaist celebration of nonsense. Finally, the original web comic is a morbid parody of a children’s book.

Conjecture: Culture is inseparable from the society that creates it, and this includes internet culture; every new meme created is fundamentally the product of late stage capitalism. As of 2014 less than one out of every four films released isn’t a reboot/remake, sequel/prequel, part of a franchise, or otherwise based on another work of media, and it’s only gotten worse since then. There are no new ideas, only perversions and corruptions of previous ideas; creativity has been crushed out of us in supplication to the profit motive. Society is eating itself. The 8 richest people in the world own more wealth than the bottom 3.7 billion. Quite literally all the money in the world wouldn’t be enough to pay off the world’s debt. Corporations are murdering their own customer base and then bemoaning that there’s no one left to buy their products.

Meme culture is necessarily a reflection of society, and as a society we can’t tell if and when we’re serious anymore. The president of the United States is a reality television star who is incapable of stringing more than one complete sentence together. Is this an extended joke? Does it even matter? The nation has been coopted by fascists who choose to represent themselves with a cartoon frog. We live in a post-truth world now, the public has stopped even pretending to care about reality anymore. I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked. Mental illness is a societal problem as much as it is a psychological one; everyone has become badly sick so how can we be surprised that despair is now a meme? And what the fuck is vaporwave?

Culture has stagnated. There is nowhere to go from here but revolution or extinction. We are all memeing into the void; this is the Last Meme Era.

Photojournalist Felipe Dana Covers Mosul, Iraq for #WorldHumanitarianDay

August 19 marks #WorldHumanitarianDay, which pays tribute to humanitarian aid workers and supports civilians affected by crises.

Brazilian photojournalist Felipe Dana’s (@felipedana) mission is to use photography to inform. “In addition to covering major news, we can’t stop looking for stories that aren’t always in the media but that need to be shared,” he says. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Felipe’s photos often capture the harsh realities of urban violence and drug abuse, and his recent work has focused on the lives of refugees and the battle of Mosul in Iraq.

“I often cover urban conflict in Rio de Janeiro, but the reality of Iraq is even more difficult,” says Felipe. “The greatest victims are the families who try to survive surrounded by war. It’s impossible not to get emotional every day working in those places. What makes me reflect the most is the ability to overcome. A lot of people have lost their homes, their families, their mothers, their children. Many are fighting for their lives in hospitals or surviving difficult conditions in refugee camps. But they continue to hope for a stop to the endless war, wishing to be able to safely return to their homes one day.”

Chris Cornell dead: Soundgarden and Audioslave singer dies, aged 52

Chris Cornell - the lead singer of Soundgarden and Audioslave - has died aged 52. In a statement issued to The Associated Press, Brian Bumbery said Cornell died Wednesday night in Detroit.

The death was called “sudden and unexpected” in the statement. A cause of death is currently unknown. Cornell’s family have asked for privacy while they work with a medical examiner to determine the cause. Tributes to Cornell have flooded social media, paying respect to the great singer.

He was reportedly performing with Soundgarden gig last night at Detroit’s Fox Theatre. Pictures have emerged on Twitter from the concert.

i really want to talk about marge simpson in longer detail because i’ve gone on and on about how she’s an underappreciated character compared to homer, because he gets all the “wacky” bits and marge is often the one reacting to that - as such it is in a lot of comedies, where the guy, or guys, are all the ones getting the jokes while the women are sort of only given “here we go again!” - but i think the simpsons writers knew how to keep her character, and the characters not really suited for wacky stuff in general, great lines, great bits, great comedy

so here’s me talking about marge simpson and the “straight” character in comedy (again, not to be confused with the heterosexual character)

a lot of making these kind of characters work is not just in knowing the rules and execution of comedy, but in pushing to still give them lines and pieces and bits even if they’re not the ones best suited to quicker, easier comedy. i want to pull out an example from season 8, usually cited as the last “great” season of simpsons - specifically episode 9, “El Viaje Misterioso de Nuestro Jomer”. the one with johnny cash. they go to the chili festival, and while everyone probably remembers the “homer humiliates ned’s pathetic 5 alarm chili” bit, there’s a very quick, very good bit with marge at the beginning that uses her character and great voice execution to make a joke pop.

this is a really quick bit with marge, but i love it to bits. the fact that she’s stunned that there could be as much as EIGHT spices out there, playing on her often built up plainness, and then not only the confusion (even anger!) over the existence of a spice called oregano, but the way she says it - “orr-ehh-gone-oh”. followed up with that immediate “what the hell?”, which has marge so frustrated that she even swears, a rarity for her, and has a furious expression on her face. it’s a really good joke, if you ask me! it’s quickly passed over for all the other shit that happens in the episode, but oh, it’s good. those kind of tight, small jokes take a surprising amount of work to pull off, but it’s great.

since homer is better fit to things like devouring peppers so hot that they send him into a hallucination where he talks to a coyote voiced by johnny cash, if someone wants to make characters like marge funny, they have to keep their humor flexible, and they have to keep pushing to give her bits no matter how easy it’d be to just toss another physical gag homer’s way. how can they make plainness funny? a simple way that’s obvious once you think of it is taking that plainness to a comical level - such as marge does, with being confused and irritated over oregano.

i just…

i’ve been keeping mum about art reposters because honestly, this argument has been going on for years and reposters still don’t seem to care about the harm they’re doing. That and I don’t think im strong enough or have the time to contact every reposter. I’d rather be drawing… So instead, i changed my policy on reposting and have allowed it as long as credit is given.

Im still not fully comfortable with the idea but i don’t think most reposters do this with any malicious intent (ignorance maybe) so I just let it go. Its fandom. Fandom should be a happy place for everyone and if my art could make another person’s follower happy, i guess dealing with reposters is a small price to pay. Because ultimately I just want people to be happy…

But this does not negate the harm that reposting, particularly ones without credit does. Instagram reposters are so quick, often times they would post up my art before I even post them on my own ig. They’d post it as is or make edits or videos with the disclaimer “don’t know who the artist is” or “credit to the artist” and that’s it.

The reason for this rant… is because i’ve recently gotten several accusations of being an art reposter who is not crediting the artist on my instagram and it made me feel a certain way. Everything i’ve drawn has been out of love and is deeply personal. I’ve laboured and agonized over every drawing for hours. None of them have been easy to produce. To have them so easily be taken away from me really hurts.

I don’t fault the person who made these accusations. I understand where they are coming from. They’ve seen it posted everywhere long before I even posted it and in a way, they’re just also trying to fight the same problem. Still, reading these accusations really made my heart sink.

And it sucks because I’m not in the position to be able to hold my art hostage. I can’t just decide not to post my drawings on social media to combat reposters. I haven’t had a freelance gig in a year and i’ve only been able to pay for my living expenses and help my family through the support i get from my store, patreon, and conventions (which im really grateful for!!). Its not just my feelings that are hurt. I can’t afford to stop posting art.

If you repost without credit, you are taking away my livelihood. You are taking away my chance of landing a job from a potential employer who might see my work so… please don’t do it
