You sat in the hospital room, staring outside and thinking about the events that happened on Mount Washington. Six hours had already passed since then. Six hours since that horrible night. You couldn’t still believe all the things you went through. It seemed like you have dreamed and it all never happened. Josh’s prank, the stranger, the Wendigo. Nothing at all. But the truth was, everything was totally real and no one would believe you. Not even your parents. You weren’t even mad at them, you wouldn’t believe yourself either. You sighed and turned your head to the young man lying in front of you. Your heart wrenched when you saw his face and his arms, covered by bruises and scratches. He was sleeping peacefully, his chest lifted and fell. Tears were brimming your eyes, you hardly tried to hold them back.
After the psychopath revealed himself as Josh, your heart broke down into thousand pieces. You didn’t want to believe it at the beginning. It couldn’t be Josh, your loving, caring and wonderful boyfriend. No, it just couldn’t be. Why would he do this anyway? Why would he punish you with his stupid game, although you had nothing to do with the prank on Hannah. But it wasn’t only you. He also pranked Chris and Sam, the most innocent people from the group. Chris passed out that night with Josh, and Sam tried to warn Hannah. Unfortunately, it was late. Too late.
Josh laughed at you, any love was disappeared from his eyes .They reflected nothing but anger and pain. He didn’t even care, when you broke down into heavy sobs. You knew, he wasn’t mentally stable and the fact that you haven’t done enough to help him, hit you very hard. You blamed yourself. You could’ve done more. You could’ve prevented those events. But no one knew about the Wendigo. This creature was the most horrible thing that you ever saw in your entire life. It would always follow you in your dreams. Those piercing eyes, its sharp teeth and its ear-piercing screech. Not even the best therapist could delete those pictures, they always would be burnt in your brain.
Someone knocked on the door, interrupting your thoughts. Mike came in, holding two cups of coffee in hands. He handed you over one cup. You gladly took it. You didn’t eat or drink for hours. Now, a cup of coffee would be the right thing to calm your nerves. Mike took a seat next to Josh on the other side of the bed. “How’s he doing?” He asked. You shrugged your shoulders, warming your hands up with the coffee. “Nothing much. He’s still sleeping. What about Jess? Is she alright?” Mike took a sip of his drink before answering. “She’s ok. Her face doesn’t look very well but that’s no problem. All that matters is that she’s fine.” You felt really sorry for Jess. Although you never liked her, cause she was so mean to Hannah and everyone else, you didn’t think that she deserved all the things that happened to her. “Poor Jess.” You sighed. Mike just nodded. You both were glancing at Josh. You took his ice cold hands in yours, trying to warm them.
You were so glad, that nothing bad happened to him. When you found out, he was dragged away from that Wendigo, all you could do think about was whether he was alive or not. Betrayal, disappointment, anger.. Everything vanished. You were just worried about your boyfriend. You prayed that he was safe and okay, and when Mike dragged him out of the mines, you felt nothing but relief. Josh broke down directly, too weak and shocked to stand on his feet. Nobody knew what he saw in the mines or experienced.
“You guys knocked him out pretty hard.” You mentioned, pointing at the bruise on Josh’s left eye. Mike laughed a little. “Well, Chris was very mad about him hitting Ashley and I thought he killed Jess. And then one led to another.” You fingers slid softly along your boyfriend’s cheeks. Mike was wondering about your actions. He probably thought, you were still mad at Josh, but you understood now. You understood how he must have felt after Hannah and Beth disappeared. His whole world fell apart as he lost two important people in his life. “He didn’t want this to happen.” You responded. Mike snorted, taking another sip. “Yeah, sure.” Suddenly you felt very mad at him, like you had to defend Josh. “You knew that he wasn’t on his meds, Mike. Normally, he wouldn’t do any of this. Never! I know him.” “Yeah, sure.” He commented again. “Listen, (Y/N), this jerk needs to be locked in a lunatic asylum. Go and find yourself another boyfriend. He will probably be out of his meds more often. ” You jumped out of your seat, your voice raised as you snapped at him. “How dare you?!” He was shocked about your harsh reaction, his eyes got wide open. You gazed at Josh, taken aback that he wasn’t awake after your overreaction. “Do you even realize that this was your entire fault, Mike? You made him do this. You made him take revenge. If you and your stupid friends had not played this stupid prank on Hannah, none of this would have happened. I mean, what were you thinking? You knew that Hannah had a massive crush on you and everything you did was humiliating her in front of her “friends”? How could you do this?” Tears formed in your eyes, threaten to fall down your cheeks.
“You ruined his life, Mike. You are responsible for all this shit. Josh’s parents never really cared for their son. The only one who cared were Hannah and Beth. And because of you assholes, yeah I mean you and your bitchy friends, he lost the most important people in his life.” You breathed heavily as you finally said the words which got stuck in your lungs for a very long time. “Ah yeah? And why did he play his stupid game only on you, Sam and Chris? The most innocent people?” You sighed, pointing at the door. “I don’t know and I don’t really want to know. Just get out, Mike. I never want to see you or the others again. Josh doesn’t need you in his life. We don’t need you.” Mike scoffed before he went out. “You’re stupid, so stupid, (Y/N).” You sighed, turning to the window. You put your face in your hands, trying to calm down. Stupid Mike!
“I’m sorry.” You heard someone whisper. As you turned back, you could see Josh, now sitting on his bed with tears in his eyes. “Josh!” You shouted, running towards him. You pulled him into a hug, stroking his hair gently. Josh tensed under your touch, his body was shaking as he let the tears fall down his cheeks. You tried to soothe him, whispering sweet nothings into his ear. “Everything will be fine, Josh. I promise. We will get through this. Together.” You put your forehead against his, feeling his breath on your lips. “Stop crying Josh, please. I’m not mad at you anymore. Really.” “I’m sick, (Y/N). I’m not good for you. You should leave me.” Your mouth hung open as he spoke. Then you slapped him lightly on his head. “Never! You hear me Josh? I’m never going to leave you! I don’t care about you mental illness. Your problem is my problem. I’m not letting go. I love you.” You pecked his lips more than once, your body was pressed against his. “I love you, Josh Washington!” He smiled, kissing the back of your hands. “Thank you for standing up for me.”
