it leads to a lot of things

What do you think of the recent "triggered" trend on social media? I have PTSD and it's making me so frikkin angry and upset to see.

I don’t like it either. There are a lot of people minimizing what a trigger really is- either intentionally or not. This seems to happen a lot once a clinical term hits mainstream use (”OCD” had a similar thing happen, for example), leading the meaning to be diluted and confused.

I went into work early for 9 today and worked late until 8 equaling an 11 hour shift because my lead gave me an extra scene despite me only being in tuesday and wednesday this week. Not including the 45 minutes bus ride to and from work either way. All while feeling quite ill and feverish after lunch cause something I ate really hurt my stomach.

I animated 11 fucking seconds today! EE-lev-ven! I know that doesn’t sound like a lot. But we are on a hard show and our expected daily quota for it is 6, Plus one of my scenes had 5 characters in the bloody thing, walks that had to track with the camera and -throws hands up in the air- It was a hard one. I assure you.

I feel like I am actually slowly dying right now, from exhaustion, from back pain, from stomach pain, you name it, whatever, it’s got me. I am trying to eat some bloody vegetable soup for dinner cause my stomach is stabbing me with tiny daggers.

Then I have to go sew two purses and finish a mask by about noon tomorrow.

Then friday to -Sunday is the con and dragging two full sized suitcases with me around this city for setup and tear down and selling the three days at a building that is an hour to 1h15 of a bus ride away.

Then I will need to recuperate. Though it’s back to work bright and early Monday.

I know I’ve been not that active lately, mainly memes. But honestly, I will likely be completely AWOL from tonight to Sunday/Wednesday depending on how dead I am come those days.

Thank you for episode 3 of the podcast! I really do enjoy it a lot. But for the record I ended up covered in powdered sugar from laughing too hard at the Aragorn Ballroom Orchestra while I was at work. Also thank you for a bunch of great music introductions! At one point you brought up Led Zeppelin, which makes me want to bring up an interesting story I heard. They wanted to be a Tolkien tribute band but were told it would work as well as a lead zeppelin. Idk if it's true but there you go.

The Aragorn Ballroom Orchestra is a thing of beauty, though powdered sugar is a bitch to get out of anything, so I’m sorry.

I’d heard versions of that story! I too am unsure of its veracity, but it’s still a great anecdote.

...Do Two of the Girls Have a Twin?

It’s so out there, but with this show, I wouldn’t put it past them.

Yes, I’m proposing that two of the girls have a twin (or there are triplets).

I know what you’re thinking, I’m off the deep end here, but here’s the thing.

We have a lot of clues that point to Spencer having a twin that is alive, but if that’s the case, then who is the body under the gazebo?

We have not seen “Bethany Young”’s face, which leads me to believe that she is the twin of someone on the show, but if Spencer’s twin is alive, then who the hell is Bethany related to that she resembles someone else so much that they have saved her face as a reveal for the end?

Gina Rodriguez tagged [Melissa Fumero and I] in this Facebook post, and was like ‘I’m so proud of these Latinas that are killing it!’  And I was like, 'Oh my god!  I guess I’ll friend Melissa.’  And we were friends on the internet before we even met in real life.

Now, I had a google alert for Brooklyn Nine-Nine because I had auditioned and then gone for a screen test, and then gone for a second screen test, and I was waiting to hear… And I had a google alert, and it came up that Melissa had been cast in the show.

And I was so happy to see a Latina on the show, but also so devastated, because I knew… I knew there was not going to be any network that would cast both of us as ensemble leads on a show.

So I cried a lot.  And I was devastated.  And I showed a couple of friends at the time and I was like *imitates crying noise*, 'I’m really happy for her but I really wanted that show.’

It was like two days later when I got the call, and I was gobsmacked.

The world is fucking changing.

And it’s such a testament to the show that they cast both of us!  And not only us, but also Terry Crews and Andre Braugher – two black men in positions of power.  It was sort of an amazing thing to see.

But yeah, now me and Melissa are real life friends.

Signs as lovers

Aries🌤
you don’t fall in love often and you’re even wary of it at times. but when you are in love, you fall hard and fast. when you meet the right person you give them your heart.

Taurus🍃
you plan the perfect dates. you know the best spots to take your date out. you are open to new things, but sometimes picky when it comes to others
planning.

Gemini🍊
you are a fun lover. dates always have a great time and have lots of laughs with you. but you can struggle with communicating your own wants and needs.

Pisces🌊
you’re dreamy and make great home cooked meals for your partner. you are great at planning cute homey dates and give warm cuddles. you can be a little forgetful, which some find endearing, but you have been late to a few dates.

When working on your goals …

1. Stop fantasising: Those with too rosy a picture of the future tend to put less effort into reaching their goals. Instead, it’s better to be open to some things going wrong. It will help you see the obstacles - and think through beating them.

2. Visualise process NOT outcome: If you can think through all the steps you will forge a better plan … and it will also help to reduce anxiety.

3. Beware of the “what-the-hell effect”: Too many just give up when they stumble or fall down. For example, think of all the dieters who binge at the first hurdle. It’s better to get up – and to see it as a journey.

4. Attack procrastination: It’s easy to procrastinate when things start getting tough. Make a start, keep your head down, and set yourself some deadlines. Once you start you’ll feel much better and the road won’t seem so hard.

5. Switch out of robot mode: A lot of behaviour is robotic and habitual. We copy other people or we do the same old things. Take stock … and change those patterns … if they don’t lead to your goals.

6. Know when enough is enough: Sometimes we need to know when there’s no point in going on. We’re flogging a dead horse and thing are never going to change. Perhaps it’s time to make that break, and to work on something else.

How To Blend Cultures (Without Making Impossible Mixes)

This is a guide specifically about fantasy worldbuilding. WWC gets a lot of questions around “I’m mixing two cultures together, how do I do that?” and this is to explain both how to do that and when you very much should not.

For starters, you should avoid blending empires with their surrounding properties, especially if there is recent political strife along those lines. This is why Japan/China/Korea (or even China/Tibet) mixes should not be done. For more information on that, take a look at Research:Large to Small Scale, Avoiding Homogenizing East Asian Cultures, & Paralleling Regions Appropriately.

Next up, mixing Greece/Rome with far-flung cultures gets a little bit eyebrow raising. Unless it was a direct trading partner/conquered property, Greek/Roman cultures do not mix with non-European cultures. The Greek empire only went to the Northern regions of India at its very peak, and that is limited to the ancient world. Rome stopped in the Middle East, so, again, you don’t have the cultural backing for a mixing of anything outside of its borders.

Depictions of Rome and Greece in ancient literature shows other ancient cultures found them quite backwards, and were adverse to mixing with them. By many standards they were very backwards, and it’s only Europe (and, as an extension, America) that revered them to the extent they do. Asia and Africa had no reason to see them as advanced, because they made many more technological advancements than either. North America and Oceanic cultures hardly interacted with either, and had both their own technological advancements+ cultures closer by to borrow advancements from, instead.

Outside of that, cultures are born out of the environments that made them. As a result, places with wildly dissimilar climates and resources pools will not be able to blend harmoniously unless you’re taking a modern analogue society where globalism has happened. This is plain old because resources only travel so far, and people are more likely to build culture around resources they have easy access to (even well-established trade links can lead to people re-creating things: Han purple and Egyptian blue point to an ancient trade link, but they were made with local materials processed differently).

Roman architecture exists because the Romans had access to copious amounts of concrete materials/marble and lived in the Mediterranean, which got very hot summers, heavy rains, and not a whole lot of cold. As a result they created structures that worked for this, which included open airways, pillars, easy to clean floors, shade, and ventilation. Places that lack these resources will not be able to replicate Rome.

Their resource pool was very specific to their regions, and there’s a reason Rome had the rule that anybody who did’t live like Romans were slaves: it was really hard to live like a Roman, and they wanted their slave pool as large as possible.

Different cultures with different resources formed in wildly different ways, and might not even have anything similar to Greece or Rome. Because of this, you need to look really close at why culture developed the way it did. If it’s because they had extremely dissimilar resources pools, it’s wise to not blend the cultures (or at least not think they’ll look anything like their original cultures)

Which brings me to value systems. Cultures put value on different things. Each culture ends up with a base philosophy for what they esteem and how they use resources, which proceeds to influence how it develops. Architecture has meaning to it. So does what colours you use in different applications. Because these things are sacred and/or practical for certain social orders. “Sacred” in cultures ends up becoming a shorthand for “this ritual helps us survive.”

There is no such thing as “aesthetic” when you get down to the root of each single item, because that aesthetic has a practical purpose. There is also no such thing as a “solely religious reason” under the same logic. Cows have become sacred in most varieties of Hinduism— because cows (and oxen) have been the main farming animal in the Indian subcontinent for millennia. They provide milk for sustenance, power for ploughing fields, and dung, which can be used as a floor polish and, when dried, a source of fuel for fire that gives off a more even heat than wood. As a single provider for crucial elements of agrarian life, their sacredness developed from their practicality. Having cows roam freely meant absolutely everyone could have access to an efficient cooking fuel.

Chinese brush painting has meaning. Jade sculpture has meaning. Pagodas and sloped roofs and gates have meaning. The philosophy, environment, history, and present circumstances of a culture is built into every. single. little. thing. about that culture, meaning you cannot just change it out.

Unless you learn the very root of culture, their values and stigmas and honours and shames, you cannot modify it accurately. Cultures survive because that was the best way to respond to the world at the time. A long-standing culture such as China’s has to be functional and incredibly well suited for the environment, otherwise it would not have survived. There is something about Chinese culture that works extraordinarily well for it to perpetuate itself, and you cannot disrespect that.

Learn the “why” of culture. Learn how it came to manifest and the reasons behind its manifestations. Study the geography and resources available to the people at hand. Know a culture so well you can explain how it works in real life and how your world’s history parallels the circumstances that created a similar culture in fantasy.

Only then will you be able to pull it off with respect.

Sci-Fantasy and Technomancy

Creating a world where magic and technology co-exist

Mixing science fiction and magic can be tricky; if everyone in the world is capable of teleporting anywhere at anytime, it probably won’t make much sense for people to own cars, for example. Blending these two forces leads to countless exciting possibilities, but it can also end up creating some inconsistencies that your audience will pick up on if you don’t think things through well.

I have several tips and things you should think about if you want to build a world that mixes sci-fi and fantasy. Ultimately how detailed you get with it is up to you; maybe you want to plot out ever single tiny aspect of how your world works, or maybe you just want to have robot dragons and to hell with whoever disagrees! It’s a story of your making; if you and your audience are having fun with it, that’s what I consider most important.

Either way, here’s some things to think about!

- Of course, it helps to start off with the usual integral factors that tend to define societies; things like geography, language, religion, laws, agriculture, philosophy, etc. Before you even start throwing magic/tech into the mix, what does your world look like? What does it sound like? What does it taste like??

- How does magic work in your world? Is it a gift only available to a select few, or can pretty much any Average Joe summon a fireball? Are all mages Clerics (with magic derived from a powerful entity), Wizards (with magic learned from studying), Sorcerers (with magic just as an innate trait), or a mixture of these (and other?) things?

- How does technology (generally) work in your world? How widely available is it? How well is it understood? What level is it at; are there nanobots in everyone’s bloodstreams, or is a bronze sword considered “high technology”?

- How well do magic and technology (generally) mix in your world? Are they both just two different tools for solving problems, or opposed forces? Can one be used to study the other? Can someone be an expert on both things? What problems have been solved (and created) from blending the two?

- Are either things taboo? How much social friction do either things cause? Is the use of one meant to be secret or forbidden? Why?

- Are tech-favoring people/societies generally on equal footing with magic-favoring ones? They don’t have to be! The world being skewed in one side’s favor could be a great source of conflict!

- What can only be done with magic? What can only be done with technology? Consider the limitations of both forces in the world. Does one force typically work better in some or most ways than the other? What things simply can’t be replicated by one side?

- Consider how advanced each side is. What methods of communication, transportation, education, fuel consumption, medical care, etc are available to magic-favoring societies and which ones are available to tech-favoring societies? One side may not be exclusively better than the other; a tech-favoring society might have much faster land transportation in the form of huge cars, but a magic-favoring one might be able to magically tame huge creatures that can walk on walls and reach places tech can’t easily get to.

- (When it can,) how does magic solve the same problems as tech and vice versa? A magical stone of far-speech can fill the magic-equivalent role of a phone, for example. A manufactured chemical packet could function like a certain spell. Of course, if one side’s method is so ubiquitous and accessible, it’s more likely that all people’s will favor it.

- On the other hand, the different perspectives will likely produce entirely different problems and methods of solving them. Beyond one side being unable to replicate certain things from another, they may not want to. Mages may have no interest in creating an internet analogue they instead have access to some great collective unconscious tech-favoring people can’t access. How might one describe these things to the other? This is where the real creative world-building comes in; not every problem should be solved by just having an equally viable magic or tech version of it. Different cultures will value things differently, and exploring that leads to lots of creative worldbuilding and conflict!

- Consider what divisions might exist within societies. There are always subdivisions within groups; not all mages are as powerful, knowledgeable, or experienced as one another. Some subgroups may think themselves superior in some way, and/or might look down upon others within their own circle for all kinds of reasons. No group is a hivemind (unless they literally are); groups are made up individuals!

- Lastly (but possibly most importantly), DON’T GET TOO CAUGHT UP WITH HOW COOL YOUR WORLD IS! Consider exactly what information is relevant to the audience and what interesting ways you can show/explain it. Remember that the focus should generally remain on the characters; there’s nothing wrong with having lots of extra world-building details, but they can bog down the story in minutia if you get too off track! You can always explore and explain deeper lore in side material!

he’s starting to get a little antsy now he knows about the teen titans (all these other super-powered teenagers actively going out and doing good in the world instead of only tackling what minimal trouble comes their way, how amazing), but feeling guilty about it because adeline put him here to stay safe, and he’s got a perfectly fine life keeping the peace around this mountain without having to go out and look for danger……..

A PSA and friendly reminder to Pharmercy fans

As a lot of you may know, Jen & Lucie (VA’s of Pharah & Mercy) may be hanging out soon as seen on Twitter. Which also leads to the possibility of them making some fun content together in videos, like we’ve seen recently amonst other VA’s.

I just want to remind you all,
1: Please, don’t hound the VA’s to make content, say things, or harass them with ship stuff.

2: If they do make something supportive of Pharah & Mercy’s friendship/relationship. Be humble folks, don’t rub it into other ship’s faces ( you know what one i’m talking about), and remember, this isn’t canon.

Just be cool guys <3 Enjoy and be thankful for the content we’re given if we get something. We don’t want to be those types of fans. It sounds like they like the idea of them, let’s try and keep it positive for them yeah?

langblr psa

okay listen y’all, if you’re just starting off in learning a language, DON’T TRUST TUMBLR. by which I mean, think twice before you rely on vocab lists / grammar posts / etc. made by langblrs.

the langblr community is a beautiful and wonderful thing, but we’re kind of like the blind leading the blind. we’re students, so it’s natural that our posts will have mistakes.

I’m saying this because I just saw a “first 300 words in French” post with literally thousands of notes… and it was chock full of mistakes. ouch. and i’ve seen stuff like that a lot of times.

non-native speakers will write stuff wrong because they’re still learning, and native speakers will write stuff wrong because it’s slang or they don’t care or they’re doing it on purpose for the lulz, as the kids used to say ~

so go ahead and use tumblr as a resource to find links to other sites with language-learning materials, but please be very careful when getting resources directly from posts on this site!

Are Sangwoo’s emotions genuine?

I’ve seen the word ‘love’ is being used a lot lately by the fans. Does Sangwoo really love Yoonbum or not? Does he feel any emotions at all? How genuine and real his emotions can be?

There are 3 possibilities based on certain personalities:

  1. He’s written as a psychopath and doesn’t and will never truly love Yoonbum.
  2. He’s suffering from some sort of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and is using the ‘numbing’ method to cope with everything. But he can fall in love.
  3. He has Borderline Personality Disorder and loves Yoonbum.

1. Antisocial Personality Disorder

I know Koogi didn’t do any researches about the disorders so keep in mind these are more about certain personalities. I’m not focusing on the disorders! Let’s imagine what happens if Sangwoo is written as a ‘stereotypical’ psychopath/crazy person (with some psychology facts).

Psychopaths have very shallow feelings. They do not understand fear at all, they lack empathy and do not feel guilt. There are certain emotions such as love and sadness and they do not feel those like others do. There are several panels with Sangwoo with question marks next to him, showing he’s genuinely confused because he doesn’t understand Yoonbum’s fear“Of course it’s dark, it’s a basement!!!?” or when he asks Yoonbum what is he doing when Yoonbum is trying to run away. He expects Yoonbum to stay quiet while he’s cutting him. He shows no empathy when Yoonbum talks about his past, even calls it “Boring”. There’s especially a panel I came across yesterday, of Sangwoo misinterpreting Yoonbum’s expression which leads me to believe Sangwoo does not understand ‘upset’, ‘sad’ or ‘scared’ because his ‘emotions’ are very limited, mostly to anger and summarized to feeling good, feeling bad.

Everything is a game for Sangwoo. And people are the toys. That shows how shallow he is. Think about him throughout the chapters. Every single move he made was for a game.

He plays until he’s bored of the game and then throws away the toys when there are no benefits for him in the game or when the game is not fun anymore. This is especially hard for a lot of fans to accept because they can’t believe after everything someone would just end it like that. But psychopaths do!

Sangwoo’s love for Yoonbum as a psychopath is not love at all. It’s self-centered. It’s about Sangwoo, not about Yoonbum. Psychopaths grow up learning from others. It helps them survive and fit in like a normal person but in the end they do not truly understand those feelings. Sangwoo does things to show affection but those are things he THINKS must be done in that certain situation and because he does not really understand them, they look wrong, out of place and weird. (like the bathroom scene or when he hugs Bum in the car or after they kill the man from the gaybar )

Even when showing affection and care, he’s doing those because he wants to and because there’s some sort of benefit for him.
He’s always treated Bum differently (from Day 1) because he is special but doing so, he always acts as if he’s doing Bum a favor, while in reality he’s doing it because there’s an advantage in it for him. He’s having fun and playing:

In brief, In his mind, he’s being nice to Bum, he might even think he’s in love. He’s giving him ‘gifts’ and ‘rewards’ because he wants him to cheer up, understand him or stop whining but his perception of ‘love’ and ‘care’ is very shallow and wrong and it will stay like that. Even if he ever tells Bum he loves him, it’s not the same love people talk about. It’s Sangwoo’s kind of love. Bum is special to him and he’s Sangwoo’s favorite toy! Sangwoo wants  him now but Yoonbum will be thrown away the moment he’s broken or useless.

2. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

“Love and feelings are nothing but weaknesses.”
You’ve probably heard that sentence or similar sentences to it from a lot of villains. The ones who are ambitious and want to take over the world. They believe feelings are unnecessary and make you weak.

We know Sangwoo is a victim of child abuse but we don’t know how bad the abuse was. Was there any sexual abuse involved? We also know he witnessed horrible events. The murder of his parents (whether it was himself who did it or his father). These sort of things usually lead to post traumatic stress disorder. Sometimes the victims use the ‘numbing’ method to be able to live on. This means they turn off their emotions and feelings to cope with the horrible past experiences. They might see feelings as weaknesses and we can see a lot of that in chapter 5:

“You know what? I hate guys like you the most. Guys that are too scared to die but are always complaining. Too absorbed with pitying themselves to do anything. Stop going on about how lonely you are. I hate that shit!”

In brief, while he can relate to Yoonbum, he hides his true feelings and thoughts in order to stay strong. He doesn’t show any emotions but he is capable of feeling them.

Now why this theory might be wrong? because people with PTSD, usually don’t even want to talk about/remember their past because it’s too painful for them but we saw Sangwoo talk about his past without any problem and he didn’t seem fazed at all. He didn’t even show any empathy when Bum spoke. So… back to number 1.

3. Borderline Personality Disorder

I’ve already wrote 2 long posts in February about Sangwoo’s BPD symptoms: PART 1, PART 2 so check those out if you haven’t yet.

While I think it’s a good theory, the thing about people with BPD is that their emotions are too intense. They feel TOO MUCH. No matter what the type is. At least we’ve seen Yoonbum switch between the feelings of love and hate quite a lot and even cry because the feelings hurt and he was confused… while Sangwoo’s feelings throughout the chapters is pretty much static. It goes from anger to frustration to boredom and etc (shallow emotions, so again, back to number 1!). We’ve only seen him in a rollercoaster of emotions once and that was when he thought Yoonbum ran away. However, that was a panic attack! Anxiety is what causes panic attacks. While fear and anxiety are interrelated, they’re not the same thing. He mostly felt hurt and betrayed, he was mostly angry. While I’ve talked about his fear of abandonment many times, that could also just be a panic attack triggered when he thought Yoonbum ‘betrayed/left/lied to’ him. It could also be a symptom of PTSD since he even had a vivid flashback.

But since these are not supposed to be on point, let’s not be very nitpicky. If he in fact has BPD, he’s already most likely in love with Yoonbum and he’d almost be destroyed if Yoonbum leaves him. (He might even consider killing himself or Yoonbum before that happens.)

So as a conclusion you can see why a lot of people might want to support the 3rd theory. Because Sangwoo will be vulnerable and in love with Yoonbum (and well, it’s more BL-ish :S). I’m not against that idea but personally I find the 1st theory more interesting and I think more facts and evidences lead to the 1st theory. He’s proven himself a psychopath over and over by showing no guilt/remorse, no empathy and no emotions and being impulsive and reckless is also a symptom of Antisocial Personality Disorder and not just BPD.

But in the end I suppose it depends on the author. Maybe Sangwoo will be the first psychopath to ever fall in love :p

i was talking to @evenandsana and something that would be so wonderful would be if…vilde were to live at sana’s place for a while

there are signs that are leading us to believe that things aren’t going too well at home for vilde, signs that have been there since season one. she can’t ever host meetings or parties at her place because of her mom, and she’s more than once mentioned these “wine tasting parties” which i think, sadly, might be what she calls nights during which her mom drinks a lot

and what if at some point things get bad to the point where she can’t hide it so well anymore, and sana notices. and she finds out the truth, how particularly bad it’s been in the past couple of days, and sana…invites her home. and vilde ends up staying with the bakkoushs for some time and it’s such a healing and learning experience for her?

because she’s made insensitive and ignorant comments and she’s been called out but we’re still, in season 4, getting the feeling that she hasn’t fully learned? but when she spends so much time with sana in her home, that’s when she finally learns and sees. because she sees sana pray, she sees the conversations she has with her mother. and being exposed to all of that in a place that actually feels like a home (something she hasn’t felt in such a long time now), in a place that feels good and safe makes her want to truly listen and learn, and that’s when she finally has these eye-opening moments, at last

and i think it would be a good idea because we know we’re not going to get a vilde season, but this would give us the opportunity to spend more time with her and see her open up and talk about her struggles, and finally see her be truthful, and at the same time, since this is sana’s season and it’s a season that’s meant to teach the viewers more about islam, we’d see vilde, a non-muslim with a lot of misconceptions about islam, learn more about it through sana

Imagine being at a party with Jason. He goes to get you another drink, and from the bar he notices a man starting a conversation with you. You see him watching you from the other side of the room. When he finally comes back with your drink, you excuse yourself from the exchange and pull Jason into an empty room. It’s time to have a chat about his jealousy.
