“It’s more like a, like a, like a cry than, than singing at some points in the song, but it’s beautiful, I think. […] When you find yourself so passionate about something, you find it kind of, consuming you and, um, that to the point where it drives you a little crazy and sometimes you’re, like, freaking out and you’re like ‘What, why do I even do this?!’ type of thing and sometimes, like, all you wanna do is just beg for mercy but you can’t, because, you know, you just become so in love.” - Shawn Mendes on Mercy and its production

.so apparently america needs a crash course on caribbean culture…first they slander rihanna and now nicki… for the record this is not appropriation. this is their culture.

.as a little jamaican girl i find this to be beyond annoying. every time there is some foolishness in the mediaalong the lines of: why is nicki minaj appropriating indian culture…….

.first off there is several things wrong with that statement.

-firstly, why are americans still calling native american people indian.?. india is in india. native americans HAVE names for their nations [not tribles, nations]. Navajo, Black Foot, Cherokee to name a few. fix yourselves.

-secondly native american head dresses are way different than carnival head dresses. also the head dresses are reserved for specific people within their nation for specific purposes. they also have a VERY distinct style to them that are different from carnival head dress.

-thirdly how do you NOT know about carnival.?. the caribbean isnt the only place in the world that there is carnival. carnival happens in several different countries. hell, even in new orleans… in america. but you want to play dumb now because its nicki and rihanna.?.

.we are carrib indian people. caribbean people look like this. caribbean people dress like this. when we have carnival we HAVE carnival. during caribbean carnival everyone is expected to dress the part to participate. people will don themselves in the most elaborate, often handmade costumes. how can you appropriate your own culture people.?. educate yourselves. stop your foolishness.

.but you cannot because you are too busy columbusting cultures and claiming it for yourself, right.?. because you’re edgy, right.?. because marc jacobs created mini buns but not bantu knots. and rows are new, but african hair braiding and cornrows are not.?. and gelled baby hair is new.?. right.?. okay. so we’re ignoring all the white indie coachella attendees, eh.?.

.this is why black people drink tea.

Disability representation is one of my favorite things, but does anyone else get a little tired of the disability=superpowers things?

Like, this character has epilepsy, but don’t worry, they can see the future during a seizure! This character is autistic, but don’t you worry, they’re a super detective. This character’s psychosis lets them talk to elves! This character is blind, but they can see into the spirit world!

And it can be fun, don’t get me wrong. I love Akata Witch, where noticeable features or disabilities can influence the type of magic you have. My favorite book is Chameleon Moon, where a cure-all type medicine backfires and can give people either superpowers or curses.

But sometimes I want to see myself without a justification. I’m autistic, but I could never solve a crime. My anxiety doesn’t mean I can see the future. I really want a paranormal, fantasy, Sci-fi, etc. book where the disabled character just is. They’re autistic and they can talk to plants, not they can talk to plants because they’re autistic. A character is epileptic but it doesn’t do anything for them, it’s just part of who they are.

Does anyone else feel this way?

Being Haitian

Out of all the West Indian countries Haiti is always looked down upon and slandered. They do not talk about Haiti the way they talk about Jamaica, Trinidad, or Bahamas etc. every other island is always associated with beauty & riches; while Haiti is associated with everything negative like Voodoo, poverty, & corruption. Every single island has their form voodoo yet no one talks about that, Jamaica can be pretty damn rough, I mean each island has their own problems..You can’t be beautiful & be Haitian bc apparently were ugly, & poor. Growing up I used to get bullied for being Haitian. I mean we’re constantly shit on but Lemme clear it up though, Haitian People ARE NOT symbols of poverty. We’re Fucking human beings. Hard working people. There is so much beauty, culture, & riches on that island. From the food, music, to the beaches…Haiti was the First & ONLY BLACK NATION to gain its independence from colonial oppression; Haiti Led a REVOLUTION That made the U.S & France hate on them. They’ve been through years of oppression, continuous hatred, devastating disasters & still hold true to their very words of “UNION FAIT LA FORCE”, But we’re the poorest country ?! Nah we been runnin shit Haitian, Black & Muthafuckin Proud of it ✊🏾

i thought you’d all like to know that the lonely island were working on ‘the wack album’ at the same time as joanna newsom was working on 'divers’, often in the same house. like??? if that isn’t some ridiculous musical juxtaposition idk what is
