In Baghdad, a Muslim woman, holding a copy of the Quran, stands in solidarity with a Christian woman, holding a copy of the Bible, to show solidarity with the dwindling number of Iraqi Christians and their right to live freely and peacefully side-by-side with the Muslims in their community. A powerful image.

Thauban reported: When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) finished his prayer. He begged forgiveness three times and said: O Allah! Thou art Peace, and peace comes from Thee; Blessed art Thou, O Possessor of Glory and Honour. Walid reported: I said to Auza'i: How is the seeking of forgiveness? He replied: You should say: I beg forgiveness from Allah, I beg forgiveness from Allah." Sahih Muslim 591

Narrated Abu Musa: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Allah gives respite to the oppressor, but when He takes him over, He never releases him.” Then he recited:– “Such is the seizure of your Lord when He seizes (population of) towns in the midst of their wrong: Painful indeed, and severe is His seizure.’ (11.102) Sahih AlBukhari & Muslim

One of the most common arguments that people make in favour of Islam is that, “You are allowing the media to paint a negative image of Islam”. This is to insinuate that Islam is actually wonderful, but it is the media that has portrayed it negatively. However, the reality is, most people who leave Islam did so not because of what the media showed them, but because of the lives they lived and through studying the Quran. The mainstream media, while focusing on acts of terrorism by Islamists, actually goes through excruciating measures to avoid looking like it has an anti-Islam bias. The media often repeats the same lines of the apologists of Islam, such has how the extremists are a fringe minority, and how fanatics have hijacked the faith, how ISIS and al-Qaeda are not representative of Islam at all, and of course the common Quranic passages, such as how if a person takes one life away it is as if they have killed all humanity, which in its actual context isn’t even talking about Muslims but giving a story about the Jews. The media takes all measures possible to put Islam on the same level as other religions. In fact, with all the knowledge that people have acquired while reading the Quran and the Sunnah, one could argue that the mainstream media tends to speak very highly of Islam and tries to paint a very positive imagine of Islam.

••• “Show me ALLAH if He exists”, a man said to Muslim Man

The Muslim Man replied, “Look at the sun”.
The man said, “I can’t, the rays will hurt my eyes”.

The Muslim Man said, “If you can’t even look at his creation, then how will you be able to look at the CREATOR?” ••

A little while ago I received a message from a Tumblr user (that I won’t mention explicitly) inquiring about Shia Islam, they’d wanted to know why I practiced Shiism and why I called myself a Shia etc. They’d explained that throughout their life they’d only heard bad things about Shias from other Muslims and for that reason were convinced that Shias were “dedicated to ruining Islam’s image with their horrible deeds”. Mind you this person had never spoken to a Shia Muslim or inquired about these “horrific acts” from a Shia person or anyone other than the Muslims that had told him these things. Because of this ingrained idea in his mind of who a Shia Muslim was, he said he was very surprised that I myself was a Shia because, (in their words) I was a nice person and “How could a person like you be Shia?”

This was by far the most hurtful message I’d ever received on Tumblr. The idea that this user was shocked that I could be Shia and nice at the same time was so dehumanizing to me, the idea that Shias were seen from his point of view as people inherently undesirable was a hugely insulting one.

There have always been insane rumours associated with Shiism, propagandic mistruths to make us seem less human, less worthy and definitely less Muslim. There are so many misconceptions even now that I hear on a daily basis that are so entirely meritless. There are hundreds and hundreds of concocted lies and stories and myths about Shias that are established with the purpose of making us seem like we are anything but human.

Islam is a complex series of beliefs with 1.6+ billion adherents–variation in interpretation and application and historical discussion and schools of thoughts pertaining to those beliefs is inevitable. Just because a majority demographic exists does not mean that the beliefs of the remaining populations are not valid.

Shiism was borne of very valid reasons, as were schools of thought that differ from Shia Islam. People that adhere to Shiism practice their faith with the same diligence and passion and intent that other Muslims do, and vice versa. No one has the right to claim Muslimness as solely their own. Complexity and variation amongst Muslims will always exist.

Often there are more than one paths to the same destination. Different senses of direction should never become the grounds for persecution.

I get a lot of messages from people saying that I changed the image of Islam for them and I’m really happy about that, but everyone should be making a personal effort to seek out information outside of the lies they’re being fed. It’s not my responsibility or any other Muslim’s to go out of our way to prove our humanity. It’s honestly exhausting and mentally taxing to have the news dictate what kind of person I am and I wish people thought “hey maybe not all Muslims are like that.” It’s not a complicated thought process. Just challenge what you’ve been taught a little.

Governor and U.S. presidential candidate Mike Huckabee went on an alliteration spree on cable news recently, saying the following about the response to the Paris attacks:

“[Democrats are] more interested in protecting the image of Islam than they are in protecting Americans… If these were Militant Methodists, Extreme Episcopalians, Bad Boy Baptists, do you think we would be afraid to say that?”

@TrevorNoah on last night’s Daily Show: “No we would not be afraid to say that. Because Bad Boy Baptists is an awful name for a terrorist group, but a GREAT name for your Christian Soul Rock, one-man, bass-only album.”
