But I held out hope… that a woman who reminded me of myself when I was younger would arrive in Boston and I’d walk the Charles with her and teach her the things a woman can do in this world. It’s the wrong river and the wrong woman but perhaps to get even this close to a fantasy is something.
I found a continuity error in Supergirl (surprise, surprise) that I’m basically just going to fit into some headcanon so it doesn’t bother me anymore. This post also features other Winn!Content with a heavy dash of Meta and Trauma, so be warned:
Okay, so. In the episode “Childish Things”, in Winn’s first confrontation with his father, he says “I watched my dad get dragged off to prison when I was eleven for murder.” <<<pay close attention to the wording of that, as we’re going to revisit it twice.
Howeverrrrr, in the s2 episode “City of Lost Children” he says, in typical Winn fashion, “if somebody had given me action figures when they interrogated me about my dad, when I was ten? I would have sung like a canary.” Ten, folks, not eleven.
Is this merely a continuity error?
Well, it’s highly probable. I’ll save my rant against CW/DC writing for the sake of this post, but let’s just leave it at the fact that continuity errors in even the fairly important (and simple) details are definitely not out of the question.
It could also be, in the Supergirlverse, that the events leading up to Winslow Sr.’s incarceration did not occur in as timely a manner as we immediately assume. We’re quite accustomed to dramas showing us crimes being committed and the perpetrator getting arrested, convicted, and sentenced in the span of 40 minutes. But that’s not how it often works irl, and not the way it necessarily has to go in fiction.
Consider the Toyman. He’s a clever guy, and obviously he was smart enough to spend time planning the attack on his boss, even if it was still ill-conceived and ultimately did not work. But if he played his cards right, it’s entirely possible that the investigating law enforcement did not have enough evidence to convict him right away.
Because yeah, the angry employee who got slighted is the first person
the feds would seek to convict, but that doesn’t mean they had evidence
to do so.
On the surface level this would in the least explain the age difference: a young Winn may very well have been interrogated by police when he was 10 and his father was not ultimately arrested until up to a year later when he was 11.
Now, if this is true, what it means potentially for the character is that there was a period of 1 month to 12 months where an angry and unhinged father who has crossed the line and snapped and actually killed a minimum of 6 people (during that first supervillainy event, although a 7th is later confirmed by Agent Chase and I’m gonna talk about that too), is still living at home, with his wife and kid.
Hence the Schott family having to live through that legal and emotional nightmare on top of the crime itself and no wonder his mom just took off.
The idea that Mr. Schott’s arrest and conviction was not immediate would also help explain the fact that the cops had to interrogate a 10 year-old-boy:
Winn doesn’t say "question” or anything that implies this was a chill “we’re here to protect you from your dad and we just need to hear it from you so we’ve crossed all our T’s” kind of conversation. He uses the word “interrogated” very deliberately, and in fact makes this reference to his childhood during a time when his coworkers are being pretty (albeit mostly unintentionally) cold in questioning a young boy, stating as a kid he might have been more inclined to be cooperative if someone had just been kind to him.
On the OTHER hand, it is slightly possible that Winn Schott is like most of us and doesn’t remember childhood events all that well when it comes to the passage of time. (I had years growing up I wasn’t even sure exactly how old I was until I counted but I’m a nincompoop so) However, being as old as he was and the events being as big and traumatic and memorable as they were, this is doubtful.
Okay, now ONE MORE THING:
Going back to that first line (”I watched my dad get dragged off to prison”), because I only realized this when I went back to the episode to check and see if I was right about the inconsistency-
During the raid at the docks, Agent Chase tells Kara they’re not taking any chances (which they’re actually taking like a lot of chances with this terrible plan of action they have, like, wow, they are the worst agents ever, somebody fire them). Why is she so uptight about all this? Because Winslow Sr. “killed an agent the last time we apprehended him.”
Go back and read the lines again.
Winn was there.
Winn was heckin there when his heckin dad was hecking getting arrested and being dragged off to prison immediately following an event in which he heck hecking killed an agent, if not literally in front of, in the very near vicinity of, his small son. (!!!)
I am. very calm. writing this now. I was not. calm at all. when I first realized it earlier.
Don’t you talk to me about any of the other characters’ traumas or excuse their behavior because of their childhood or family history - ever again. Appreciate Winn Schott Jr. folks. The purest sunshine child, who constantly overcomes so much, always forgives, automatically seeks the good of others first, is seldom thanked and always called upon to show up, and has so much empathy and caring he’s about as opposite from his dad as he can be. He deserves nothing but to be valued, cared for, and loved.
piper and will cooperating and coordinating the greatest feat of dramatics chb's ever seen is what i live for
they would bc pipER’S DAD IS AN ACTOR. WILL’S DAD… do i even need to explain. they get together and their cabins end up staging something that should get an oscar but all it does is reduce it’s audience half to hysterical laughter and maybe possibly tears
like. imagine retellings of the shit that went down on the argo ii. the funnier side of things, maybe, because so many people asked what happened while you were gone? and rather than scare the shit out of the camp after a WAR, they just. try and make the best of it. honest but not dark.
now i’m stuck imagining will and piper casting different members of the aphrodite/apollo cabins as people on the argo ii and just “that is the MOST shit-eating grin i’ve ever seen. you’re a perfect leo.” and “wait, no. do that again. walk like you’re about to murder someone–YEAH! that’s it! that’s annabeth!!”
that clip of the lightwoods is so interesting to me? Like, even though Alec is hella done with maryse, for a split second he reverts back to his submissive posture in front of her. I also loved the way he tried to warn Izzy to tone down what she was saying in front of max. And maryse's reaction to Izz dragging her was fascinating. She seemed... not regretful but more embressed? Idk if I'm making sense. I just really hope we see more of the lightwood dynimacs in future episodes.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES I love talking about the Lightwoods’ dynamic!! I
definitely want to see more of it because it’s so damn interesting, and I also want to see more of the Lightwood
kids and Robert, too (and I wonder if they’re going to do the whole Anna Marie
Highsmith thing in the show, but it doesn’t seem like it).
I like how they show how rebelliousness of any kind does not come easily to Alec. There are way too many protagonist
characters in general and in the show
(each of Clary, Jace, and Izzy, to name a few) that are just “fuck the rules I’m
gonna do the right thing/what my heart says!” but that they still depict that as a bit of a
struggle for Alec is really interesting to me and I hope they explore that
further (and how he eventually overcomes it). Like his most “rebellious” act
was far and away the kiss at the wedding, and for the first time in his life,
he does do what his heart says – and then,
right after – “What did I just do?” So it’s still a conflict for him, even if
his heart does win out in the end (as we see now with Malec), and that’s one of
the things I find most interesting about his character.
So like, even though he is indeed hella done with Maryse, you can see
how he kind of shifts as soon as he sees her, becomes a little more
soldier-like in his countenance and his stance, the obedience coming naturally
to him through years of conditioning himself to be like that (if he can be the
perfect soldier and the dutiful son, it can compensate for his other
self-perceived shortcomings and they at least won’t hate him for never being
Also, another detail I loved from that clip was Alec and Izzy’s
different reaction to Robert’s absence. Like, Alec was hardly surprised but
Izzy really was, and I think it highlights the different ways that Robert
treats Alec vs. Izzy. Like, Robert dotes on Izzy and it’s pretty clear that she’s
his favourite, and he’s seen as the Good™ parent compared to Maryse, but other
than the scene after the kiss in 1x12, he hasn’t really treated Alec very well
either – in fact, blaming him directly for Jace’s insubordinations in
1x06-1x07, and Alec’s allusion to past mistreatment in 1x09 (“You drilled into
me that I was never good enough”). So I really want to see more of Robert and
Alec’s dynamic and how it’s different from Robert and Izzy’s. I think both Maryse
and Robert basically got used to Alec being more of a soldier than a son and
treated him accordingly (and tried to do the same with Izzy, but she was more
resilient in that sense).
(And I think Maryse is sort of the inverse, in that Alec is her “favourite”
(after the Jace/demon blood thing, because before it was pretty clearly Jace),
even though she doesn’t exactly treat any of them very well, but she has a
massive and clear disdain for Izzy that’s not as much there for Alec, likely
because of Alec’s soldier-like obedience more than anything else – although we
haven’t seen them interact too much about his coming-out and Magnus, so I’m
really really really excited to see how they portray that in 2x08.)
FINALLY, yes! I really liked how they showed some dimension to Maryse,
because after 1x12-13, people were so so so quick to completely villainize her and so many Malec fics actually made her
out to be the villain of the story.
Like, between her treatment of her kids and her being in the Circle, she’s not
a good person by any stretch of the imagination – but here in this clip you can
see that despite everything, she does care
about her children and their relationship with her, and she can feel how frosty
they are towards her, and I’m sure no mother – no matter how convinced of her
own toxic ideologies – really likes that feeling. Plus, if you recall, Jocelyn
was in the Circle with Maryse and Robert (Maryse was a very prominent member
according to the books), so you can only imagine that Jocelyn and Maryse knew
each other and probably quite well. So I like that she mentioned Jocelyn and
looked genuinely sad about her passing.
Can I have a request where * if you can show pictures of it* the RFA ( v and saeren) go to the diamond shop to buy the perfect ring for MC but they just freak out because they don't know which one to get till they see THE ONE
(hi so I apologize if the image quality is low?? google sometimes shows the Perfect ring but in a very low resolution ;; also sorry of this seems sorta non-romantic lol I’m just very “???” with pretty weddings and engagements because my sense of romance is so skewed someone could propose to me with an onion ring and chances are I’d say yes bc I have low standards)
of course he’s freaking out
SO MANY SHINY THINGS SO MANY PRETTY RINGS WHAT IS THE RIGHT CHOICE
he sorta wanted to go with a gaming reference but no this is a wedding it’s srs business and he wants to show MC how seriously in love he is
the gaming references will be in the wedding he’s just holding back for the ring
it has to show how he sees MC, but… how does he do that. does he use symbolism?? does he just try to picture MC in a ring??
but then he sees IT
sure, it’s not too complex, but it’s perfect and he knows it will fit MC perfectly
he doesn’t even ask for the price before he’s dead set on getting that one
she’s super flustered as she walks around the store
what to do what to do what to do
she’s really nervous?? she does know she wants it to be minimal but also pretty and-
she can’t decide until she sees the one she likes
she really, really likes it. she can imagine herself wearing it and can also picture MC wearing it-
she blushes thinking of MC wearing the ring. this is too good how did she get such a good life
she is also really happy with the color, because she does want it to have a more personal feeling
he’s so nervous the whole time
he just, really loves MC so much
the ring needs to show how much he loves them
he wants a ring that will combine with both his and MC’s beauty
so he’s looking very thoroughly and checking every single ring
finally, after hours, he finds one that he just. knows
that’s it that’s the one it’s amazing
it just really fits the aesthetic of the whole thing?? it’s fit for someone as pretty as MC. he’s sure
tbh before meeting MC he’d just have said something like “just get the biggest diamond”
but now that he knows how real love feels he just knows it can’t be just a shiny stone. he needs a ring that resonates to MC’s soul
that… that doesn’t mean he’s not getting a super expensive ring though
he is honestly not even worried about the price?? is he ever when it comes to MC??
he doesn’t want to get something that will bother MC’s finger, though
most of the large diamonds look like they could potentially hurt MC’s finger so those are out
he ends up going for a very nice platinum ring with blue tones because THAT’S THE ONE THAT IS BEAUTIFUL AND MC DESERVES BEAUTY
keep calm and browse the rings
it’s not like this is the ring that he’ll show to ask MC to be his life partner and stay with him forever, an important and lifelong commitment that should be the biggest step in their relationship so far,
needless to say he’s having a Blast and by that I mean Stress Blast
still, he can’t help but smile like a dork when he sees huge ass rings that he knows are unpracticall as hell and probably unwearable
but then he sees one and he knows. he just knows
that’s the kinda ring one uses to get married in the space station
(and yes sorry this is edited i just couldn’t find the Perfect ring)
he can hardly contain himself??
he keeps seeing rings that he thinks are good but he can’t decide??
the clerks are actually a bit intimidated by him
they think his silent brooding form is scary but he is actually thinking about what ring would look prettier on MC
finally a clerk shows him a ring that he just knows. it’s that one. the perfect one
it just… seems so pretty?? and he really likes it. it shines just like MC but it still feels like something nice and something MC could wear
the shop attendants have been there for an hour
describing each ring with amazing detail so he gets a general idea of how they look
V feels super guilty because he feels like he’s taking so much time??
but what can he do. he’s blind af
still, one clerk describes a ring that just- sounds right
he asks to hold the ring and asks more about it- color, luster, all that
and that ring, something just resonates with it that seems to be the same as MC for him
