is a glorious god

Bank Teller: Colonel Lee, of course, come this way! And this is your… son?
Artemis: *pops bubblegum* Unfortunately, dude, yes.
Butler: My son does not communicate well with the rest of the world.

In book 4, Artemis Fowl had to disguise himself as a normal moody gum-chewing teenager who wore hoodies and jeans–not to mention an unkept hair–all for the first time to his horror. He missed his Armani and Zegna suits. But he was dedicated to rob the most secured bank in the world with Butler disguised as his military father. Please protect this boy he doesn’t know how to act like a normal teen! Everyone doesn’t exactly live like an heir to the Fowl Empire.

I would rather be what God chose to make me than the most glorious creature that I could think of; for to have been born in God’s thought and then made by God is the dearest, grandest, and most precious thing in all thinking.
—  C.S. Lewis

Big Girls Don’t Cry

Stiles/Derek, 1.3K words, Rated T, Domestic Fluff

Stiles groaned and flipped over, burying his face in the curve of Derek’s shoulder. “This is torture,” he whined, and he felt more than heard Derek’s rumble of agreement.

“Yeah,” he said drowsily.

“How can you be so calm? Our daughter is wailing.”

“I’m not exactly calm. It hurts my ears more than yours,” Derek said dryly, and Stiles rolled his eyes. There had to be a limit on the amount of times that he was allowed to use that excuse. “But the pediatrician suggested that we at least try it. Give it five minutes, we’ll see if she soothes herself.”

Stiles sighed and patted Derek’s chest hair idly, rubbing at his own dry, achy eyes. The past six months had simultaneously been the very best and the most difficult of his entire life. Laura had very kindly donated one of her eggs, Stiles had jerked it in a cup, and a lovely young woman, who was in need of tuition money for grad school, served as their surrogate. Stiles had never expected the conception of his offspring to be such a complicated process that involved so many doctors, but a year later, they were blessed with Mia. She had his eyes and Derek’s hair, and Stiles was pretty sure she was the most beautiful creature to ever walk the earth. She was perfect and wonderful and glorious and holy mother of god, so much work. Stiles had no idea how it was possible to be so exhausted and yet so deliriously happy at the same time.

“How long has it been?” he asked, and Derek grunted.

“90 seconds.”

Stiles groaned again, squirming restlessly. “Torture, torture, torture.”

“I’m going to the bathroom,” Derek said softly, easing himself out from underneath Stiles’ weight. “Be right back.”

Stiles rolled into the warm spot left by Derek’s body and closed his eyes, praying for the sweet relief of sleep. He dozed off, he was pretty sure, and sat bolt upright when he realized that Mia wasn’t crying anymore. How sad was it that he now jerked awake at the absence of sound?

He flopped over to look at the nightstand—it had been four minutes, Derek was still “in the bathroom,” and Mia had stopped crying. Hmm.

A note about those that only love you on the shallow end: There will be some that only want to know you in the moment; when you look your best, when you feel your best, or when you can best meet their momentary needs. And it can be tempting at times, to seek comfort and satisfaction in their attention and affection but please know this:

Your heart is attached to something far beyond the shallow end…out in the deep, beyond the boundaries of the comfortable, casual place where far too many people have settled, because they don’t want to commit to anything beyond the shore. But please remember, you were made for more. Please remember God has been calling you deeper from the start, for He has set Eternity in the human heart. He has created your heart, like a water well, filled with life, and everything you do flows from it.

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. - Proverbs 4:23
⠀
Remember this when it seems like they only love you in passing, or they get what they want and leave. Not everyone will be ready for depth. Not everyone will willing to catch more than a glimpse of what God is doing in your heart. But you will be okay. Because when you know Jesus, you know that there is more to you, and there is more to come. When you know that Eternity awaits you, you know your life is not controlled by what happens on the shore, because you are constantly being drawn deeper into His grace and truth, further than you’ve ever gone before.

This is what God is doing in your water well of a heart, so protect it. Guard it. Keep watch of those that only want to come in and out. Pay attention to who stays, and is willing to go deeper. And not just because of you, but because they are exploring the glorious depth that God has placed in them, too.
