The photo is one of a series taken by Dorothea Lange and Irving Rusinow for an agricultural “Community Stability and Instability” study by the Bureau of Agricultural Economics and which now form a record of pre-World War II rural life and social institutions.

Today is International Children’s Book Day!

Since 1967, the celebration has been held on the same day as Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday. 

This photograph shows children lining up for books at the Taos County bookmobile project while it was visiting a school in Prado, New Mexico. Irving Rusinow, a colleague of Dorothea Lange in the Office Bureau of Agricultural Economics, took the photo in December of 1941.

Today, most of these skills have vanished. Here, Mrs. Sheridan Corey is making a hooked rug. She sometimes designs her own patterns and usually finds a ready market. A rug like this sells for around $30.00. “

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. This Old-Order Amish farmer is mending a harness. Mustaches are never worn, but beards must be worn by married men. Buttons are permitted on work jackets, such as the one this man is wearing, but are not tolerated on formal coats.”3/19/1941

Most of Landaff teachers don’t stay on since if they are well-qualified, they can get better paying jobs elsewhere. “

“Landaff, Grafton County, New Hampshire. The Lisbon Company was founded in 1897 and increased its holdings from that time to this. In late years the business has been in a precarious condition; but now it appears to be working full time and shareholders are more optimistic. Although outside Landaff, the mill has had some effect on the community for about half a century.”

Landaff, Grafton County, New Hampshire. This covered bridge is in Bath village, 5 or 6 miles from Landaff. It is said to be one of the longest in existence. Before bridges like this were built settlers crossed the Conn. in canoes or on log ferries.
