into the new world making film

i am always amazed by the extent to which bigots will go to avoid seeing things from someone else’s perspective. my dad refuses to watch the handmaid’s tale because he thinks it’s sexist. that could never happen, he says, it’s too unrealistic and he doesn’t like science fiction anyway, but bladerunner is one of his favourite films and he’ll talk about brave new world for hours if you let him. my uncle hates top of the lake because he says all the men in it are terrible and he can’t relate to any of them, but if i complain that i don’t like a film because it has an all-male cast i’m being “oversensitive” and “politically correct”. my cousin hated get out because it’s absurd, it’s black propaganda, it fuels the illusion that all white people are racist, and how can you enjoy a film when watching it makes you feel like a bad person? bigots are so wrapped up in how they feel, how they are treated, that they cannot even imagine what it must be like to experience the world differently. for them, their experience is not just the only one that matters. their experience is the only one that exists.

disney meme [1/9] characters➞ emperor kuzco
“he’s the sovereign land of the nation. he’s the hippest cat in creation. he’s the alpha, the omega, a to z. and this perfect world will spin around his every little whim ‘cause this perfect world begins and ends with…. me”

I went to see a talk by Colin Gibson, the production designer of Mad Max: Fury Road, and one of the most mind-blowing tidbits I learned was that when the Green Place turned sour, the matriarchal Vuvalini took their girls and fled, but they left all the boys behind. Those boys, left to die in the poisoned bog, became the Crow People we see walking on stilts:

Gibson also said they chose white paint for Immortan Joe’s war boys because (and I quote) “fat white bastards killed the world.” The Vuvalini were conceived as the opposite extreme to this, the opposite of the “fat white bastards” - but their way and their culture is still a dead end, and their callous disregard for male children is no better than Joe’s callous disregard for female children.

This makes the ending of the film, where the wives and Furiosa take the Citadel in order to build a new society, even more important. Neither Immortan Joe nor the Vuvalini had the correct ideology, but the wives and Furiosa do. Thanks to their long journey in the Wasteland, they are placed in a position to fashion and rule a more idealised, peaceful society, one based on equality across race, class and gender.

Dag, the pregnant pacifist, took the seeds from the older, violent generation so she could build a new, peaceful one. Capable showed empathy and kindness towards Nux even though she had been abused by men her whole life, and will surely show the same empathy to the war boys and war pups left behind. Toast the Knowing, observant and intelligent and ready to lead, took the wheel from the dead tyrant at the end and eagerly helped raise up the oppressed classes at the Citadel. Cheedo the Fragile turned her fragility into her greatest strength, proving that gentleness is not weakness in this barbaric world.

Furiosa forged a relationship of complete respect and equality with Max that helped her overcome the trauma she suffered at the hands of men. She achieves catharsis by killing Joe and loving Max and the wives, emerging from it all ready to begin again, ready to leave the past behind and step into the future.

We see many different tribes and cultures in this film and are presented with many different methods for survival, but only one that is really worth fighting for. The love, trust, respect and equality that exists between a ragged band of strangers in a War Rig thus becomes the prototype for the new society that will rise from the ashes when the Citadel falls.

Summer Themes

Hi everyone!

As promised, here are some of the theme suggestions for the Reaper76 Summer Event!

We don’t want to do set “day themes” like many of these event weeks do, but we do want to provide everyone with some ideas or inspiration.  You’re not limited to these, but some of them might help you get started or get the gears turning.

  • A day at the beach: it’s hard to think of summer without a trip to the beach! Gabriel’s home city of Los Angeles has several great beaches that might give you some inspiration!
    • Some ideas: Which one immediately jumps in the water?  Do either of them like building sand castles?  How does Jack react when seeing the ocean for the first time?
  • Setting up camp: many people like to go camping in the summer, not just for being outdoors but also to enjoy other activities like hiking, swimming, off-road driving and biking.
    • Some ideas: making smores, building campfires, watching sunrises and sunsets, stargazing
  • Hit the road, Jack: road trips are a quintessential summer pastime. Popular routes include Route 66 and California Highway 1.
    • Some ideas: how do they split driving time, and who is the bad driver?  Who gives bad directions?  How do they split music choices? Motel rooms?  What sights do they go see?
    • Some ideas: when do they take their big Americas road trip?  Who plans the route through Central America, who plans for Southern America?  Where do they visit?  What do they do in Mexico City?  Or Rio de Janiero?  Or Buenos Aires?  Or Santiago?  Do they visit the Amazon in Brazil, the Andes in Chile and Argentina, the cenotes of Mexico and Belize?  Trips across the United States are fun, but consider looking at the wonderful world beyond it - as an opportunity to explore and learn about new places and cultures.
  • We’re all golfers now: lots of sports take place in summer, including baseball, golf, swimming, surfing, and bike races
    • Soccer/fútbol: outside of the US, fútbol matches are popular in the summer.  Would Gabriel and Jack root for a specific team?
    • Lúcioball: which one wants to learn how to play Lúcioball?  Does the other come along and try to play?
  • Just Desserts: lots of great food come into season in the summer - things like watermelons, strawberries, peaches, nectarines, and especially corn (lol).  Ice cream and pies are fun treats in the summer.  Barbecued foods, hamburgers, ribs, steaks, and grilled chicken are all popular.
    • Some ideas: Favorite ice cream flavor?  Favorite fruit?  Who makes the better burger?
  • Welcome to Hollywood: it’s time for summer movie blockbusters!  What kind of movies would they want to see?  Who gets scared in the horror film?  Who wants to see the action flick?
    • Some ideas: What sights does Gabriel show Jack the first time he visits LA?  What are some of their favorite movies?  Do they visit movie sets?
  • Retirement doesn’t suit us: summer often means trips to new destinations.  Where do two supersoldiers go in their time off?  The world is wide with many cool places to visit and see!
    • Some ideas: How do they react to seeing Dorado for the first time?  Or Hanamura?  Which one is the space nerd who wants to visit the Lijiang Tower?  Which one is the history nerd who wants to see Ilios or Giza?
    • Some ideas: Does Gabriel suggest going to Mexico to visit family?  What places does he show Jack?  What foods do they eat, what music do they experience?
    • Some ideas: who wants to take a trip to China?  Who wants to visit India?  Do they run into junkers in Australia?  What do they think when they visit Numbani in Nigeria for the first time?  How do they react to visiting Gibraltar?
  • Like the stars: did you know fireflies are not found in the western United States? How does Gabriel react to seeing fireflies in Indiana for the first time?
  • Now those are some fireworks: the 4th of July is Independence Day for the United States. Celebrated with barbecues, baseball games, neighborhood and family get-togethers, and fireworks large and small.
  • Summertime Romance: sometimes a love lasts a summer, sometimes it lasts a lifetime (or two).  How do Gabriel and Jack spend over twenty summers together?  Do they do anything special for just the two of them?

Hope these themes help spark your imaginations!   We’re super excited that so many people are interested in participating!  Please feel free to send us any questions or ideas, and best of luck to everyone creating some R76 content for the event!

Remember, the event begins July 4th and ends July 18th!  You can start submitting art, fics, graphics, and content to the tag #reaper76summerevent, or send us a link on the blog!

Have fun, and let the summer sparks fly!

Born into a traditional Mexican Catholic family in the 1940s, Graciela Iturbide was expected to become a wife and a mother. And that she did—with a camera in hand. Gifted a camera by her father before leaving home for Catholic boarding school, she began shooting black-and-white film photographs and never stopped.

As a young woman she navigated a brave path, carving through the male-dominated photography scene of the 1970s to become one of the best-known photographers in the world.

Over her long career Graciela has been both filmmaker and photographer, student and mentor and, as she turns 75 this year, she is both artist and subject in a new a graphic biography—a first for Getty Publications—about her life and her story titled Photographic: The Life of Graciela Iturbide.

Read the behind-the-scenes making of Photographic here. You’ll see Graciela’ neighborhood, her studio, and meet the author and illustrator bringing her story to life.

By the way, I visited the Star Wars and the Power of Costume traveling exhibit a while back, and ran across this little gem.

[Image description: A photograph of a museum placard. It reads:

“OBI-WAN KENOBI
Jedi Robes, 1999
Episode I: The Phantom Menace

Vintage wool from World War II era

Doused with water during filming, the vintage wool fabric of Obi-Wan’s cloak began to shrink—shortening to near knee length in minutes. This meant using—and ruining—a new cloak for every take.”]

Look, I’m not saying there’s a correlation between Ewan McGregor’s robe situation in TPM and Obi-Wan’s tendency to lose his robes later in the series, but I’m not saying there isn’t one either. ;-)

"Give Me Back My Rhodey"

Notice that Tony doesn’t say “Give me back my partner” or “give me back my friend.” He says “Give me back my Rhodey” Which implies the special (and frankly, irreplaceable) space Rhodey occupies within Tony’s life. Tony was specific in his wording (Give me back my “Rhodey” and affectionate nickname, as opposed to “James” or “Rhodes”, a nickname which Tony uses in place of his actual name “James”)

Looking at Tony throughout the MCU, he’s dealt with betrayal, guilt, PTSD, and an overall anger that consumed most of his actions in the final act of CACW. With the destruction of the Avengers morale, the fact that Tony and Pepper are “on a break”, the guilt he feels for causing Ultron, and the endangerment of millions of people, the only thing Tony has left after the events of CACW is his “Rhodey”.

And seeing Giant man take hold of Rhodey during the airport fight was far more than just dramatic action, it was Tony Stark, for the briefest of seconds, seeing the only good thing left in his world being snatched from him. Which makes Rhodey’s fall even more impactful. It’s more than apparent that James Rhodes is the center of Tony’s entire world right now.

At the end of the film, after Rhodes’ fall, during the trial run of Rhodey’s new mechanical legs, you could clearly see Tony doting on Rhodes, Offering to help him be as comfortable as possible, willing to add any modifications Rhodey asked for (including a cup holder if Rhodey had asked for one).It wouldn’t surprise me if Tony insisted Rhodey stay with him in the mansion so he could keep an eye on his “Rhodey”

Of course, this affection (whether platonic or otherwise) is also shared by Rhodey (from searching through the entire desert to find Tony to making sure he was sleeping enough in IM3). What I find interesting about this role reversal is that Tony tends to overcompensate (again, going back to the scene where Tony was willing to make any modification Rhodes asked for) but Rhodey never blames Tony (or anyone for that matter) about his current situation, he jokes with Tony (Tony Stank) in an attempt to lighten an otherwise negative situation. Rhodey is upset/disappointed/sad about his current situation (“This is a bad beat”)  but he never, ever, blames Tony. Which is something Tony would probably expect given his transgressions listed earlier. Think about that, Rhodey provided Tony with a brief reprieve from the guilt that had been building since Iron Man 1, and who else in the entirety of the MCU franchise has done that?

Not Steve Rogers, or Bruce Banner, or even Thor with his ideals of second chances (he did give Loki multiple chances to redeem himself, right?)

Throughout the MCU Rhodey is the one thing that hasn’t blown up in Tony’s face. He’s the one thing that Tony can still trust not to betray him, or keep secrets. Rhodey is the one person who doesn’t make Tony feel guilty about his past mistakes (and that’s quite a feat when your mistakes are easily the size of the entire planet.) Rhodey is so much more to Tony than just a “side kick.”

When Tony says “Give me back my Rhodey” what he means is “Give me back my world.”

Iconic Disney Scenes: Know Who You Are, Moana (2016).

Rare and few are there scenes that come from Disney canon that when viewed make you feel that wow I am experiencing something epic moment. Something that is beyond just being a good scene or movie. But rather a moment where your jaw hits the floor and where you remember that animation is a visual medium and not a genre for “kids”. THIS is that scene. The distorted yet sad reprise of Innocent Warrior being played as Moana walks across the ocean floor paralleling the beginning of the film with her finding the heart yet on a grander scale never fails to make me lose it. Seriously just a 10/10 scene one that’s up there with Part of your world reprise, and a Whole New World. That’s not even mentioning this on an artistic level which if I am being honest might be the best looking scene from Disney animation since their switch to computer animation?! All in all I am still floored every time I watch it.

This was it; in a few moments, you’d be sealing what had been the greatest adventure of your entire life; Harry Potter had brought you love, eternal friendship and so much happiness. You looked at yourself in the mirror, still feeling the same nerves you felt ten years ago when you were turning up to the Philosopher’s Stone premiere - now here at the Deathly Hallows Part 2 premiere, you quarrelled on how quickly time flied. You still recognised yourself yet you had matured - you had experienced so much and you were so lucky.

Practicing your mantra in an attempt to control your breathing, you took a breath for seven seconds, held it for five and exhaled for six. “Having fun?” You heard an all too familiar voice chime from behind you. You turn around, spotting Tom stood leaning against the doorway. “I’m so nervous.” You declare, walking over to him to give him a peck on the lips. “You look ravishing.” Tom comments looking you up and down with a smirk. You were wearing a navy full length dress that hugged your curves in all the right places. He was wearing a navy suit (which just so happened to be the same shade) and his hair was tousled just the way you like it. “So do you.” You replied in an oddly surprised tone. Tom hadn’t really bothered with the previous premieres, even turning up in jeans and a t-shirt to the last one. “You sound so surprised, love.” He chuckles, intertwining his fingers with yours. “I am, I didn’t think they’d make you look this sexy. Now I have to compete with all the other girls.” You chime, reaching up to peck his lips once again. “You’re not competing, Y/N, I’m already your boyfriend. Besides, you look amazing, should I be worried about any man trying to steal you away?” Tom asks with a grin on his face. You shake your head. “Of course not.”

LGBT Representation on TV/Film

Im going to make this as brief as possible. When I was a kid (about 12 years old) there was 1 show that had lesbian representation on it…. that was Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It meant the world to me to see someone like me on tv. It gave me hope for the future. They severely mis-stepped and killed off Tara. Here…. in 2017 we have a multitude of shows that have LGBT representation. You are giving a new generation hope. For a lot of queer kids all we have/ had is representation on tv. In a lot of our towns/ states/ provinces/ countries…. it still isn’t okay to be gay and it isn’t acceptable. TV/ movies are an outlet. They are a beacon of hope that one day…. thats what our society will look like. You as an Actress/ Actor/ Showrunner/ Director/ Company/ TV Station/ Production Company… you have a responsibility. You have a responsibility to handle and portray LGBTQ stories fairly and correctly. This new generation will hold you accountable. Do not queer bait. Do not start something you can’t finish. Do not kill for shock value. WE WILL HOLD YOU ACCOUNTABLE. Be responsible with your storytelling.

Part 2: Task: 12 Days of lesser known animated show/film recommendations

Hey, guys! I’ve been a bit down lately, so in order to give myself something to do, I decided to share with you all the lesser known, underrated or entirely hidden gems of the animated world (as far as I know), be it show or film.

Rules:

-The animation must be traditional (no CGI unless it’s minor and in the background; i’ll do an all CGI list later).

-The recommended work must have soothing, inspiring or otherwise admirable leads with realistic emotional connections.

-The plot of the story must be intriguing if not wholly believable and the artwork must meet certain aesthetic standards.

-The characters must have emotionally realistic interactions with one another in ratio to the time allowed for them to interact.

-The animation in question may be from anywhere in the world.

Also, feel free to clue me in on any that I don’t list, because I would really appreciate a new animated find!

As a matter of course, a great deal of the listed shows/films will be ‘anime’, simply because japanimation has the monopoly on the most unique and varied story lines, and Japan (and sometimes France) are the only ones making mostly traditionally drawn animated features still.

Alright, here we go … …

Day Two: Fairy Tale Films :)

The Day of the Crows

I absolutely adore this film. Not only is The Day of the Crows a superbly animated feast for the eyes, but the characters, lessons and honest interactions take it a level above most children’s films. Not only that, but the dialogue is wonderfully translated from the French to the English subtitles. As a matter of course, I prefer watching films in their original language unless the dub has some inventive dialogue or more adequate voice acting, but this little known gem isn’t likely to pick up a dub any time soon anyway, so all of you who only watch dubs should make an exception for this one.

It is the story of a young boy who has been raised by an ogre in the woods, until one day he must leave the protection of the trees for the nearby village in order to save someone precious to him. While there, he meets a young girl and begins to learn the touching history of his family. It’s a delightfully nuanced film. Really, don’t miss it!

Note: The title is mildly misleading, as any crow characters are showcased near the end of the film and don’t get much screen time. But why should that bother anyone?

A+

Fusé: Teppō Musume no Torimonochō

Is there any anime lover who would pass up a film with adorable characters and animal transformations? Well, I actually would pass up the ‘animal transformations’ part, but that may just be me. Fusé is a touching fairy tale centring around a young huntress who befriends a dog-like humanoid named Shino. What puts this movie a pitch above the other films out there with a similar premise is it’s refusal to give the characters more slack than any real person would get. People die…there’s a surprising amount of gore which I feel is somehow toned up despite the soft animation. It’s the sort of film that makes you laugh less because it’s funny and more because you know your window to find things humorous is rapidly disappearing. You want the characters to be happy….you think they should be because the film is so cute…but it’s the bitter-sweet trick of the story.

It’s based on the Hakkenden, an old Japanese novel series that details the exploits of the ‘Dog Warriors’, beings reincarnated from the slaughtered spawn of a princess and her dog lover. This is part of why I can forgive the dog-creature theme, because the characters within the story on a few separate occasions refer to the story as a ‘counterfeit’ or parody of the Hakkenden

A

Snow Maiden

An old Russian animation about a young woman who is the child of Spring and Winter, stepping into a village for the first time and learning that she does not have the capacity to love as other humans do. It’s very touching, very whimsical, and in the end bitter-sweet. I’d recommend it for the beautiful artwork alone, but the characters are given a surprising amount of life considering how old the film is. It’s clearly a labour of love.

A+

The Dead Princess and the Seven Knights

An old Russian film based on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The most fantastic thing about this film is that from start to finish the entirety of the script is one looong poem, complete with rhymes. I believe this film, Snow Maiden and The Twelve Months are all apart of the same collection, but these three are not dubbed into English, like some of the better known in the series, such as The Snow Queen.

A

The Twelve Months

If you are familiar with this film, it may be because you’ve watched the anime incarnation. I’d advise you to watch this one instead. Not only are the characters a bit more vital, but the art is a step above the anime and the humour is a bit more fluid. It is a Cinderella-like tale about a girl who wanders into the woods after being forced to preform an impossible task, and receives guidance from the Twelve Months, who are portrayed as a band of merry males of various ages having a meeting around a camp fire in the dead of winter.

A

Kirikou and the Sorceress

Kirikou and the Sorceress is a fascinating film about a young boy who, from the moment he is born, is able to talk and think like an adult. But he is still only a baby, and is very small because of it, which causes troubles between him and the towns people, and eventually gets the attention of a wicked sorceress that finds him a nuisance as he starts to use his size for unusual heroic feats.

Every character is fun, the dialogue is insightful and the resolution is terribly sweet.

A+

Tales of the Night

A series of re-worked fairy tales told through ‘shadow puppet’ visuals. Beautiful stories, really. All of the interactions between the characters are unique and admirable, and every tale has a satisfying conclusion. You may think the shadow puppet look takes away from it, but, really, it only gives you a bit more emotion to savour since every character looks pretty much the same, allowing their intentions to nakedly drive the stories, rather than their looks.

A

The Last Unicorn

Based on the book of the same name, and with a screen play by the author, this film is one of the better known ‘hidden gems’. The story follows the ‘last unicorn’, as she searches for others of her kind, who are being held captive in a barren land that is very far away from her gentle forest. She gathers loyal and endearing companions along the way, and eventually looses a bit of herself in the throws of a pseudo-romance with a prince.

It’s a classic. The animation is unique and whimsical, and the pacing, characters and eventual resolution are all wonderful. It was my favourite film as a child.

A+

The Princess and the Pilot

The Princess and the Pilot is a touching tale about the blooming tenderness and self-awareness between a pilot and the princess he is tasked with transporting across the ocean. There is political intrigue, bold decisions and the rude awakenings of reality in a war torn country. Both the leads are relatable and worth the care you inevitably develop toward them. And though the ending is a little frustrating, it is handled in a realistic and tentative manner that shows the meaning of personal feelings, even if physical circumstances can’t reflect them.

A-

Miss Hokusai

Miss Hokusai is the fictional and slightly sensationalised biography of an actual historical figure from the Japanese artistic past. The story is told in a series of self-contained artistic episodes that explore the philosophy needed to produce vital art, by teaching the characters emotional lessons through supernatural interactions. It’s very unique and telling, and every character has a degree of believably that is pleasantly attention grabbing. Some might complain that the formatting leaves a bit to be desired, but I’m pretty sure this is all intentional.

A+

Princess Arete

Princess Arete is one of those rare princess films that is all about a princess and her character building, and not at all about romance.

Little Princess Arete is kept in a tower where she grows increasingly depressed, despite her night time slips into the town bellow her window. By a bitter sort of luck, she is kidnapped by a wizard, and from here able to experience the world, albeit under a curse. The film has a very charmed and truthful grasp on the meanings in minor interactions and it never betrays the passionate heart of it’s female lead.

It’s a bit slow, but if you watch movies for the enrichment they provide and not for the face paced thrills, this one may be for you.

A+

Magic Boy

An old Japanese feature from the ‘60′s about a young boy who must do battle with a wicked witch to protect his home and family. The characters are enjoyable, the battles are pretty neat and the animation is a proto-perfect anime film suite. Honestly, if you’ve seen Kubo and the Two Strings and then you see this, you may feel, as I have, that it is like the spiritual grandfather to Kubo

The Life of Guskou Budori

If you’ve ever seen Night on the Galactic Railroad, these two may look familiar to you. As you watch Guskou, you may develop the suspicion that the characters are an alternate incarnation or perhaps even a canon reincarnation of Giovanni and Campanella.

The Life of Guskou Budori is about said titular character as he navigates life after the death (otherworldly kidnapping?) of his younger sister during a great famine. The animation is simply gorgeous, and if you can forgive the incredibly vague narrative, you may just find yourself walking along a very enchanted dream.

Like Galactic Railroad, all of the characters are anthropomorphised cats. I’m unsure why that is, but it’s cute and inventive. It too, is based on a book. If you haven’t seen Night on the Galactic Railroad, I would also recommend that one, as it is very touching and poetic, but it is very slow. If you happen to like both of them, the anime Spring and Chaos, another anthropomorphic cat tale, may be for you, as it is about the guy who wrote the two aforementioned stories.

Tales from Earthsea

If you are a studio Ghibli fan, you may be in for a treat. This is a loose adaptation of Ursula K. LeGuin’s seminal work the Earthsea series. It wraps into one film the characters and issues of four books, and so it doesn’t do the books much justice as it has bit off a bit more than it can chew. But if you accept it as an entirely different story that happens to have similar magical rules and the same names as the Earthsea series character’s have, the film is quite good.

Young Arren is a disturbed young man who runs away from his posh life and is picked up by the Arch-mage Ged. After making a special friend and fighting a deranged wizard, Arren learns how to own up to his fears and find peace despite his crimes. I recommend watching the original Japanese dub, as it is a bit more insightful about the Earthsea world.

It is directed by Miyazaki’s son Goro. If you like this film, you may like his other, more well rounded film From Up On Poppy Hill (my favourite Ghibli film), and Miyazaki’s Howl’s Moving Castle, which is an adaptation of Diana Wynne Jones’s book of the same name (and a far more skillfully crafted adaptation than Tales from Earthsea. The perks of being a seasoned animator, I guess).

If you like the films, or even if you don’t, I recommend reading the Earthsea series and the Howl’s Moving Castle series. I prefer the latter.

A by itself, B-/C+ if compared to the books.

Fire and Ice

Fire and Ice is one of those barbarian films from the early 80′s. It’s got action and romance and wild prehistoric beasts, an obvious bad guy that’s still pretty well rounded despite his minor screen time and a bit of sorcery that you can laugh at if your mind is dirty enough to catch the innuendos. In a nutshell, Fire and Ice is a great late night blast from the past that every child of the 90′s should see at least once.

With art overseen by the legendary Frank Frazetta, I think any serious artist could find this film pretty rad as well.

A-

The Cat Returns

The Cat Returns is a fascinating continuum of Shizuku’s story from Whisper of the Heart (another Ghibli film). It’s a fairy tale to the max, complete with a dapper cat ‘prince’ and woefully silly damsel-in-distress. It’s a lesser known Ghibli film, which is why it’s on the list, and if you do watch it, I recommend pairing it with Whisper of the Heart, a high school drama about a young girl’s blossoming romance and her attempt to write a novel, since it’s only right to see the little strings that connect the two tales.

It’s funny, charming and the Baron has a British accent ;) Mmm-mm delish!
