internet and sandwiches

Master Post of Amherst Coffee Shops/Study Spots

Raos

Pros:

  • better internet connection
  • better hot drinks
  • better service
  • sandwiches are actually yummier
  • they have irregular prices that take sales tax into account– you end up with a nice, even number and no pennies or dimes.
  • their pastries don’t taste like dirt
  • when they make something hot, it’s actually hot
  • seat cushions
  • open late
  • they make a great London Fog (recently discovered beverage of choice)
  • isn’t as cold as Black Sheep

Cons:

  • limited sandwich selection, plus they run out
  • often overcrowded
  • I once ordered white hot chocolate on a whim and it very nearly killed me. It tasted like poison. They may or may not have served me a mug full of soap, but I doubt it cause it actually tasted WAY worse than dish soap. Possibly lethal, definitely undrinkable.
  • occasionally hard to find a socket
  • often full of super creepy people and that sucks. And it can suck a lot if they talk to you directly. Have had strange men sit across from me at my small table for two.
  • pretty ugly
  • might be warmer than Black Sheep, but honestly, that’s a low fucking standard

Black Sheep

Pros:

  • if you want to concentrate on your work, bad internet can be good?
  • internet’s decent now
  • better sandwich selection, more vegetarian/vegan options
  • European sandwich on baguette is delicious, so is Valley Girl with ham or salami
  • more natural light/better light
  • closer to campus
  • less crowded/more table space
  • plenty of sockets
  • they don’t serve “white hot chocolate" so it’s unlikely that you’ll die there
  • you can make tea for free if you’re crafty about it and have no moral code
  • the people are strange, but they’re rarely creepy.
  • you can get good day-old ham/cheese croissants half price.
  • sometimes they have bands perform

Cons:

  • bad service (not consistently, but…)
  • apparently bad coffee
  • can’t make a London Fog (this is important to me now)
  • FLYS
  • hard chairs and benches
  • honestly kind of dirty
  • lots of weird older folks from town hang out here and converse really loudly about who gives a shit
  • often sells hot stuff cold. DOn’t order a hot sandwich.
  • sand pastries
  • closes early (they used to close at 7, now it’s 8)
  • ugly as hell
  • cold as shit
  • sometimes they have bands perform

Starbucks

Pros:

  • I have no idea but for some reason I studied there all the time freshman year
  • so there must be some
  • frappuccinos
  • usually a pretty friendly staff
  • sometimes you’ve got a gift card?
  • they have special offers every now and then and you get free shit!
  • if you stay really late, they’re the most likely to put the pastries that didn’t sell out for free
  • it’s a chain so the staff is way more laid back and let’s you get away with more
  • baristas are best in town to flirt with– you won’t feel as weird.
  • internet’s ok
  • creepy factor shoots way down
  • used to be cold but doesn’t seem to be that cold anymore

Cons:

  • apparently started closing earlier
  • awful
  • it’s Starbucks
  • not THAT many seating options
  • most of the seats are near a door
  • it’s probably going to be full when you get there

Amherst Coffee

Pros:

  • it’s got good atmosphere
  • it’s closer to me?
  • apparently open late
  • ??
  • people like the coffee
  • it’s a good space for creative work
  • if you can drink, it’s got a bar

Cons:

  • it’s got good atmosphere at the expense of any seats
  • more likely to run into a professor there
  • I’m serious, it’s almost impossible to find a seat there
  • if you do, there’s about a 10% chance that it’ll be in reach of a socket
  • overpriced like WOW
  • very small selection of drinks
  • even smaller selection of food
  • they’re weirdly into communal seating so you can’t really sit on your own
  • the hot chocolate is bad and the portions are so small! (hahahaha but they are)
  • this place is hell
  • it’s a giant fishtank so it is literally never warm in winter
  • plus they usually have some dude restocking and to restock they have to open one of the doors and keep it open for like a half hour

The Lord Jeff (library)

Pros:

  • really, really beautiful
  • a fireplace??
  • warm
  • gorgeous
  • cozy
  • staff is nice
  • you can get drinks from the bar in the restaurant but most people don’t realize
  • staff is INSANELY nice
  • they’ll offer to bring the drink to you and bring the check later
  • no one knows they can study here so it’s nice and quiet and usually pretty empty
  • in the morning you can get yourself a really nice oatmeal with fruit and honey
  • it’s a really nice place to go in the winter and just relax.
  • I don’t even know how late it stays open. Maybe forever? No idea.
  • internet’s good
  • like DANG I can’t stress this enough

Cons:

  • they don’t serve many snacks, and most of the food is too pricey to be worth it
  • hot chocolate can be amazing but can also be not so amazing. Ask for it extra hot, just in case.
  • there’s this one lady who’s in there a lot and she might ask you if she can borrow your phone and you have to say no because she’ll just take it and use it for an hour, and she’s clearly not mentally sound, but if you say “no” she’ll ask you why not and it’s really awkward
  • people plan their weddings there which is the worst
  • it’s so cozy that you might not get work done
  • dim lighting can make you sleepy

I met @mkhunterz at TorCon!!!!
