‘Developing’ countries are still 'developing’ because they are exploited by multinational corporations from rich 'developed’ countries.

Globalized capitalism paints a gruesome picture of the appalling, deadly practices these corporations engage in to use cheap labor and suppress any opposition through force.

The outsourcing of jobs from developed countries occurred when workers won their rights: protection from unsafe working conditions and products, a guaranteed wage, abolition of child labor, et cetera.

The fact that multinational corporations outsourced jobs to vulnerable developing countries where they can neglect basic human rights proves that capitalism is built on the backs of the poor, who suffer and starve despite resources being abundant.

Neoliberalism has identified exploited countries as 'developing’ to shift the blame and promote a disastrous agenda.

Arguments defending this exploitation usually are along the lines of “well, you can’t expect corporations to protect these people, it’s always the government who is at fault”. Those arguments prove that neoliberals have succeeded in their agenda.

Globalization, under capitalism, has not created a world government, but rather a connection between the ruling class worldwide, allowing for legal agreements that promote their interests above all.

Capitalism kills millions, regularly. Globalization has not only made that easier, it has legalized and normalized it.

Summary: Phil is less than excited to start his Sex in the Bible course, but he can’t bring himself to regret it when he meets a gorgeous angel dressed in all pink by the name of Dan.
Word Count: 11,068
Warnings: Lots of religious talk, homophobia, physical fight, smut
A/N: Hey guys! I wrote this because I was tired of people writing a religious fic where Phil continuously tries to get Dan to sin. So this came out, where they both respect each other despite their religious differences (With a dash of sex at the end). If you’re uncomfortable reading smut then no worries! It’s easy to tell when they’re going to get it on and it ends at the ’-’ and is very close to the end (: Lastly, special thanks to @insanityplaysfics for betaing this for me and giving me this entire idea! Also thank you @phandommother for helping me out with the idea as well and listening to me rant about it :’)

Phil didn’t know why he decided to take the class. None of his friends were taking it and it honestly seemed like a lot of shit that Phil didn’t particularly care about, shit that didn’t really help him with his future career in any way. It seemed like a class that had a lot of reading, reading that Phil would probably never do, and let’s be honest, he probably only took the class because it had the word ‘sex’ in the title.

He walked into his Sex in the Bible class five minutes late on his first day.

The teacher didn’t bat an eye. Heads didn’t turn to look at him. Phil just sauntered in and stood at the back of the lecture room with his backpack slung over one shoulder while he scanned the room for a seat. Sometimes he forgot just how uncaring everyone was in university. He could just walk in ten to twenty minutes late and nobody would give a shit. Especially not in a class where there were over one hundred students.

(He didn’t understand why there were so many students in Sex in the Bible. They probably also just took the class because of the word ‘sex’).

Here’s one of my favourite international working class solidarity and sabotage stories, it’s very short.

In Madrid during the Spanish civil war they came across an unexploded shell - a German shell, made in the Ruhr valley. Approaching it carefully, on closer inspection they saw that it had words written on it. Those words were “Comrades! The shells I make do not explode!”

They put it on display in a shop window and people cued round the block to see it.

happy international women’s day! (march 8th)

“when i wrote that song, i didn’t even call myself a feminist yet. but i had seen first-hand how women are treated differently. for me, it was just small stuff like catcalls at shows. but the harassment that i’ve gotten lately, it all comes from the same thing. it’s people saying ‘i’m allowed to do this to her because she’s just a girl’. words like ‘slut’ and ‘rape’, they matter. they make us feel devalued and threatened. they choose words that inflict pain, and then they tell us it’s our fault for getting upset about it.”

Lilith

Lilith is the Dark Feminine. She was Adam’s first wife, God created them at the same time and they were to be equals. But once it was time to make love, they began fighting over who got to be on top. Lilith demanded equality and Adam wanted her to submit to him. She fled and went to live by the Red Sea, where she would copulate with demons and monsters. She became known as the child-killer/seductress/witch/she-demon.

Before this, Lilith, in Sumerian mythology, was handmaiden to Innana, the Queen of Heaven. Lilith’s job was to approach men on the street and bring them to the temple for sexual rites. During these days female sexuality was revered and seen as holy. Once the patriarchy decided it wanted more power, it began demonizing the female sexual power and its hold over men. Hence, later myths depict Lilith as evil. Really, her only sin was sticking up for herself. This is what Lilith represents in our charts - the dark feminine aspect, unbridled sexuality, equality amongst the sexes. Wherever Lilith is in your chart shows where you may have an unconscious (or conscious, if you are identified with this side of yourself) need to express your sexuality, demand personal satisfaction, and be yourself. Lilith wouldn’t change herself for Adam and she went off to live a life of passion.

Pluto is a similar archetype. Lilith is associated with the serpent (sexuality) and the bird (messenger for the goddess). Scorpio is also associated with the snake and the eagle. Lilith is more specifically feminine and deals with our feminine wounds, and for men, their projection of the evil woman onto others. Lilith is an important element in your psyche if you’ve ever suffered sexual abuse, have been ostracized for expressing your sexuality, or if you identify with the darker aspects of the feminine (or are attracted to the femme fatale type). Lilith asks us to own our sexual nature and to put our needs above society’s (especially today, in this patriarchal society).

———-

Aries

Lilith in Aries is the firey sex siren, she knows what she wants and is going to get it. Assertive, aggressive, dominant  - she take the power of Mars and lets Lilith ride away in its war chariot. She may be a little selfish in the bedroom, putting her pleasure first. She may be perceived as masculine if she takes on the more dominant role. She can also imbue sex with a youthful energy, like teenagers first falling in love. Underneath her cutting aggression, she is a hopeless romantic. She tends to love the chase and may lose interest after making a conquest, but it’s only because she’s searching for the perfect partner, someone who will keep her flame burning forever. The most passionate of the Liliths, her sex recalls the days of knights and maidens.

Taurus

Lilith in Taurus is an earthy lust goddess, the most sensual of the Liliths, decadent in her approach. She loves all things beautiful, perfume, candles, soft furry blankets, all these things make her feel sexier. She is a woman of the forest, a forest nymph, dancing around with Pan and enjoying all of the earth’s delights. Her sex is full of love and romance, she can pull anyone into her world of intense romantic connection. Perhaps she loves everyone that she sleeps with, even if it’s only once. She is simple in her approach, there’s a bare nakedness to her, knowing that all it takes is letting Venus flow through her. She is Venus’s priestess (along with Lilith in Libra). She would perhaps be able to express her sexuality to the fullest within a loving relationship.

Gemini

Lilith in Gemini would be very playful sexually, probably into dirty talk, they probably love trying on different sexual styles (maybe into roleplaying), adaptable to different partners and enjoys trying on different people. They also make smart sexy, they would find sex in the mind, like getting aroused just having an intellectual conversation with someone. Turned on by cleverness, wit, intelligence, knowledgeable people. I would also think maybe their sense of sexualness may fluctuate, feeling celibate one day and promiscuous the next, because they feel the myriad of possibilities when it comes to sexual expression. Bisexuality would be something to pin on Gemini (or pansexuality). They feel the feminine and the masculine within them, and can express both sides (passive or active).

Cancer

Lilith in Cancer has sex with her soul. She is bewitching and psychic, calling down the powers of the Moon. Her power is her insight into the hearts of men, the world of feelings. She has felt it all, and this is where her wisdom lies. There is a timelessness to her, her past-lives are ever-present, and she can be nostalgic for places she lived centuries ago. The emotional bond is what is paramount in the sexual act - and it is always felt more strongly by her, as she is aware that they met before, in other lives. She is the nurturer, the comforter, but can just as easily turn into the dark mother. To gain access to Lilith in Cancer’s body is to gain access to her soul, the home in her heart. Those that disrespect the sanctity of her inner world may find that she’s not just a cute and cuddly comforter. She’s a natural witch and has no qualms banishing you from her temple. She offers you a return to the womb, a reunion with the Great Mother, if you are able to handle her ever-changing emotional landscape.

Leo

Lilith in Leo combines the dark bewitching Lilith with the confidence of the Sun, bringing that dark energy out into the light. It reminds me of the 70’s and disco, gold glitter everywhere, people dancing into the night. She’s a woman who demands to be worshiped, and demands that sex be fun, rather than serious. But she also requires a deep need to connect at a heart-level in the sexual sphere, she is a romantic at heart. In Tarot, Leo rules the Strength card which is represents the taming of the animal side. So I would think maybe there would be an animalistic side to the sex, like a wild-cat thing going on. Leo Lilith would have no shame showing off their sexual side, putting on sexual performances (strip shows, dances etc). The bedroom is her stage. There’s a sense of royalty and glamour imbued into her, she is the Queen and knows it.

Virgo

Lilith in Virgo brings together the virgin and the whore, combining innocence with seduction. The self-owned woman, the woman who owns her sexuality and is not dependent on her partners. ‘Virgin’ doesn’t mean abstaining from sex, it means pure, untouched, even if she’s enjoying a bountiful sex life. Ruled by Mercury, Lilith in Virgo can handle multiple partners at once. She loves to serve and would probably fall more naturally into a submissive role. She finds joy in pleasing her partner, even to the point of obeying orders. She knows her power lies outside of this bedroom dynamic. Sex may be a chance to lose the control she so perfectly holds over her life. Like Lilith in Gemini, she would prefer an intellectual partner, one that can ignite her mind.

Libra

Lilith teaming up with Aphrodite. Like Lilith in Taurus, this Lilith embodies pure femininity. While Taurus would be a more earthier, sensual lust goddess, Lilith in Libra would be the charming seductress, beauty is her power. She would maybe be a people-pleaser in the bedroom, putting her partner’s pleasure first. I would see her bringing poise and grace into the sexual act. Libra rules justice so this Lilith may be interested in finding justice for women. Combining soft flowery femininity with dark witch power - like Lilith in Aries she knows how to get what she wants, but instead of taking action she’ll charm you into coming to her. While Lilith herself prefers to be single and independent, Lilith in Libra may find power through relationships, it gives her the stage upon which to perform her sacred sexuality.

Scorpio

Lilith in Scorpio - the true witch. Lurking in the shadows, this is Lilith completely satisfied having sex with demons by the Red Sea - it’s not just rebellion for rebellion’s sake, she just really likes it. She is drawn to the darkness, to the taboo. She is comfortable doing things in the bedroom that would make others blush or cringe. Her sex is filled with intense passion, undying love. She is the reason the French call the orgasm le petit mort - sex brings her to the boundary between life and death. Sex is not a frivolous thing to be entered into, it is the place with the deepest waters. She may be interested in sex magick, knowing the energy produced through sex can be channeled to fulfill her Will. She may also be interested in BDSM, comfortable with the fact that sex is a dance of power. Lilith is associated with vampires and Scorpio takes full advantage of the sexual intrigue the vampire image presents.

Sagittarius

Lilith in Sagittarius brings to mind the centaurs, half-man half-animal. We don’t always talk about Sagittariaus’s sexual prowess but what would expect from the sign following Scorpio? They are able to channel a certain primal strength into their lovemaking. Lilith in Sagittarius turns sex into an adventure, bringing to mind high-class international escorts. Having sex in hotel rooms may feel more right than in the comfort of their own homes, where things are stagnant and predictable. Ruled by Jupiter, the planet of excess, they see no limits to their sex life, it is an expansive frontier they are implored to explore. They’re wild horses running away from boredom. Within a relationship they’re always keen to explore new territory to keep things interesting. They look for anything novel and exotic in their encounters, things that make them feel larger than they are.

Capricorn

Lilith in Capricorn would also have an earthiness to her. There would be an element of seriousness to her and to her approach to sex. She has a practical, keen mind and can orchestrate her sexual encounters in order to have the greatest payoff, whether her desired end is a committed relationship, financial gain, or just pleasure. She is timeless and classy, appearing modest. But underneath this public face, well Capricorn is one of the kinkiest signs (sorry Scorpio lol). Capricorn rules the Devil card in Tarot - the card of all earthly pleasures and delights, especially those forbidden to us. Capricorn may be known as the sign of repression, but on the other side of repression is a thick libido, and who knows what they get up to behind closed doors. You won’t know, though, because outside the bedroom she is the respectable CEO.

Aquarius

Lilith was the first rebel, and Lilith in Aquarius reminds us of this. She is is the experimenter, she’ll try anything in the bedroom once, just for the hell of it. Interested in overcoming sexual limitation, sexual mores and codes of conduct, it’s her body and she’ll do what she wants with it. Aquarius rules technology so probably not shy about using toys in the bedroom. May have a detached view when it comes to sex. Finds independence through sexuality. A sexual ‘weirdo’,  Aquarius is the eccentric. Might try things for the bizarre novelty of it. Radical and revolutionary in their sexuality, may be interested in sexual politics, a true feminist. May be androgynous, finding both the masculine and feminine within themselves. May be drawn to unconventional sexual lifestyles like BDSM, polyamory, orgies. Imbues the dark bewitching Lilith energy with electricity, divine knowledge - she may have sudden mystical revelations at the point of orgasm.

Pisces

Lilith in Pisces brings sex to new heights - the heavens. Sex is not just sex to her, it is a point of departure, a doorway to encounter her higher self. When you have sex with Lilith in Pisces you are being given an invitation to experience heaven on earth. Sex is a transcendent experience - ask her when she feels closest to God and she’ll say in the bedroom. May be interested in spiritual sexuality such as Tantra. There is a certain innocence to Pisces, although she dives into the depths of emotion like Scorpio, her sex is not in the shadows. She finds herself completely merging into one with her partner, she longs for dissolution, absolution. She wants to forget herself. Sex may be a form of escape for her, an addiction, if she’s acting unconsciously. She may love having sex in the water or masturbating in the tub, anything that makes her feel more fluid, so her sense of physical boundaries disappears.

Anakin is one of the most misunderstood characters in the Star Wars universe.

I believe this solely because of all the canon that has been released alongside the prequels such as novelizations of the first three episodes, the Clone Wars animated series and the Darth Vader books as well as the very facts that Anakin grew up a slave and was a direct product of the Force.

Yes, Anakin had been manipulated into turning against the Jedi Order by the chancellor, but if you really consider Anakin’s experience with the Order, his perception of the Jedi being evil was not too far from the truth, as they had been incredibly corrupted.  As a slave, Anakin learned to be obedient, so when he was freed, he had high expectations for a life as a free boy. What he didn’t realize was that he was trading one life for another. He was already 9 years old when he was taken into the order, so he grew up a normal (slave) child’s life alongside other children and especially his mother, free of emotional, physical and mental restrictions. Upon joining the Jedi, he had to forget those connections; he was taught that they were “not the jedi way,” that they were wrong, that they would cloud his thoughts, that he must not ever feel that way; this must have been especially hard to do-living your entire life one way and and then being told you had to forget it. On top of that, Anakin had over 20,000 midichlorians- the minimum amount to be considered a Jedi was 5,000 (yeah, I know, I know, midichlorians are just some prequel bullsh*t, but they’re canon), but seriously though: this was more than Master Yoda. Anakin was born of the Force. He was nearly 2 to 4 times more powerful than all of the forcefuls in the temple. Where most people took months of meditations to learn proper telekinesis, Anakin probably struggled not to throw objects; when he was taught to warm something with the Force, he set it on fire, burning himself trying to raise the temperature. I imagine meditation was difficult for him because he probably heard so much; he was probably overwhelmed and easily distracted by what he felt but didn’t know how to control or channel it. Maybe it scared him (italics a product of wingletblackbird).

His entire life as a Jedi, Anakin had been told that he was the Chosen One, prophesied to bring balance to the Force. You can imagine how frustrating it must have been for him to constantly be reminded of this, to be 2 to 4 times more powerful than anyone else in the temple, and to be so restricted, not trusted and held back by the council. This was one of the reasons he viewed the council as self-serving and corrupt, especially when they asked him, a mere Jedi Knight, not master, to spy on the chancellor when they were getting their rights stripped away. Had Anakin been given the rank of Jedi Master, he would have given into the self-serving and narrow-minded views of the Order, and probably never turned to the Dark side, as he later realizes as Darth Vader.

In the novelizations, the reader gets a better and more detailed explanation of the characters and their thoughts and actions; some even include some scenes that were not shown in the movies themselves. For example, when Anakin was killing the remaining jedi in the temple, we find out that he didn’t really want to; Pre-suit Darth Vader still had Anakin Skywalker fresh inside him, and being very conflicted with all the memories he had growing up in the temple, he called upon the Dark Side to help him do what he believed was necessary because he knew he wasn’t strong enough to do it alone.

The Clone Wars animated series offers an even more in-depth understanding of Anakin and his connections to everyone around him; here we get to see the hero of the Republic at his prime, the ballsy and unorthodox Jedi who was cocky and humble all at once, the skilled pilot and most cunning warrior; and along with this heroic reputation he has, we still get to see his intense love for his comrades, especially his Master, his padawan and his wife. The audience also got to see how these connections in turn influenced some dark decisions, thus demonstrating how it was not only the chancellor that had turned him, but his fear of losing his loved ones. Yet as much as the animated series makes Anakin’s fall to the Dark so much more heartbreaking after experiencing the Clone Wars by his, Obi Wan’s, Padme’s and Ahsoka’s side, it can also serve to undermine the surprise element of his fall that the prequels portray; TCW turned Anakin into more of an edgy character with an inherent darkness, cheapening the good-hearted and conflicted prequels Anakin. The entire point of prequels Anakin was that his fall didn’t make sense, that it was out of nowhere, that there weren’t many warning signs, that he was manipulated by others into an impossible situation, that if one or two circumstances had been just slightly different he wouldn’t have fallen (italics a product of anakinskydala).  But Prequels and Clone Wars Anakin both present the fact that his fall didn’t have to happen, that it could have been so easily avoided, and that is what makes it so much more tragic.

In the Darth Vader books, we get a peek into the tempest of thoughts raging behind the stone-cold mask. I never really considered the person behind the mask until hearing about the tragic memories and internal battles clashing within; Vader is really depressed and in constant, agonizing pain. The books reveal his constant internal battle with his former self, how he relives parts of his life and imagines how they could have went differently, how he immensely misses his love and the love between them, their child, how he hates Darth Sidious, how he hates himself, how he hates his suit, how uncomfortable everything is, how he misses his body, how he realizes he was never really free from being a slave, how he only feels human in his bacta-tank and meditation chamber, how he dreads putting his suit on, how he can’t sleep, how he channels all his anger and pain to become more powerful through his connection the Dark Side, how he blames Obi Wan and the Jedi Council for everything… It is in these books that we understand Anakin, the Chosen One’s true intentions for betraying the Jedi. When being visited by Padme on Mustafar in Episode III, the newly-knighted Darth Vader confronts his frantic wife; he is excited to tell her about how he plans to learn all that he can from Palpatine, how he plans to use that knowledge to overthrow him and end his regime once and for all, how he is doing this all for her and their child, for the entire galaxy, so that they may live as a family in peace. It is in these novels that we understand that there was still so much good in him, that he wasn’t completely consumed by the dark side, that he was going to fulfill his prophecy. But his wife was so worked into a frenzy that she wasn’t listening to his words, he had to make her understand, he had to. He would.  He would make her understand that this was all for them. But then Obi Wan emerged from her ship. And here Anakin’s Dark Side gripped him, his anger, his hatred, his pain at the very thought of his wife betraying him consumed his entire being and he lashed out, grasping her neck with the force, not thinking, only feeling. “YOU BROUGHT HIM HERE TO KILL ME?!”

This is in no way a justification for his horrific actions, but it definitely explains and gives a little more insight on what was going on in Anakin’s head, allowing for a better understanding of who he was without being completely apologetic towards him.

Anyone with a more in-depth understanding of the novelizations of the movies and/or the Darth Vader books OR ANAKIN IN GENERAL, please share some insight!

(I wrote this for my speech class lol)

I have officially climbed over a massive hurdle. That massive hurdle of completing and graduating law school. It has been a long and tough road. From sleepless nights, anxiety attacks, and barely passing my first semester by the skin of my teeth. But all that seems insignificant, the moment I walked across that stage in all my MELANIN GLORY as I gazed upon my fellow colleagues. Realizing, my class (CLASS OF 2017) was the first class of my university to have the highest percentage of POC walking across that stage to receive their Juris Doctor degree. A university, where historically POC’s make up less than 15% of the population. So not only was this a momentous moment for me, but for those who look like me, and those who see me and feel inspired that through hard work and dedication, anything is possible!

For those that doubted me, those who claimed I wasn’t good enough, and those who my dreams will never become a reality… well to you, I say “Thank You!” You see your lack of support and intent to tear me down provided me with the ammunition that allowed me to overcome every obstacle law school hurled my way. I walked across that stage and claimed my degree, despite your doubt. . . I AM GOOD ENOUGH. My dreams will never become a reality you say? Many told me it was unrealistic to expect to obtain employment overseas straight out of law school, furthering that it was even difficult to obtain one in my own city. I can only chuckle as I sit here completing my visa application for a position in China I landed BEFORE I even walked across that stage. If you see no opportunity, then YOU must be the master of your own plan and create that opportunity.

“Not everyone will understand your journey, that’s fine… It’s not their journey to make sense of. It’s YOURS!” (Zero Dean)

Did you know that you can train your concentration? It’s not something you will get over night but with a little practice and patience you can train your focus. Here are five training methods you can do in your daily life.

  1. Write with your week hand.
  2. Write a word backwards.
    E.g. “concentration” -> “noitartnecnoc”
  3. You can’t focus on class or a speech or anything like that?
Don’t doze off instead just pick a word from the topic what the person is talking about. Start with a simple word which is not very often used and count it in your head.
E.g. it’s your international law class. Pick the word “contract”. Every time the teacher/prof uses the word “contract”, count it. Sounds simple?
Later you can continue with a more often used word like “and” and so on.
The meaning of this exercise is to train your awareness and accuracy of your listening.
  4. Count a specific letter from a text.
E.g. use an article from a paper and mark the letter “r”. Later you can try to do that without marking the letters. Like this you can also use a text from the internet e.g. your favorite blog etc.
With this exercise your brain is forced to focus since you have look at the article carefully so you won’t miss a letter. It’s the perfect time killer for waiting times ;)
  5. Imagine a white wall.
This exercise is perfect to start (or end) your day with a clear head.
Sit down comfortable (not too comfortable so you fall asleep again :P). Close your eyes and imagine a white wall. Nothing but a white wall. If another thought is coming into your mind just start again. Try to do this 15 minutes long without distraction.
Don’t get frustrated if it doesn’t work at your first try. It’s quite hard actually. You can also start with e.g. 5 minutes and increase the time from time to time. Maybe setting a timer if you feel like you could loose time with this practice.

That’s it so far. I really hope this is useful!
Have a nice day ♥

[2/100] 08/08/2017

Day 2 of my challenge of beating procrastination for the next 100 days. When I got home from my internship - pretty late - I went through some notes for a class of international private law that I’m taking next year.
I’m using notes from a girl who’s a year ahead of me in law school and I’m retyping them in my way. This way I’ll start this class with my notes already taken.

anonymous asked:

Do you have to have been a client in therapy in order to know that you want to go to school to become a therapist? I was talking about career goals with a friend, and she said she thought it was "weird" that I would want to be a therapist even though I have never been in therapy myself. Is this something grad schools and professors would frown upon? Do they expect people to have been through therapy before they choose this career path?

Yeah, it’s frowned upon to be a therapist and never been in therapy. You can wait til you are in graduate school but many programs’ applications want you to be able to speak to your experiences in therapy. It’s fine to have the desire and not have had therapy but if you really want to pursue it - it’s important to go for at least a bit. You need a lot of good self-knowledge to be a good therapist. Counter-transference and your own shit is going to come up for you, even if you think it won’t (I saw this in grad school for sure with the one person without any therapist experience). If you get all the way through graduate school and still haven’t ever been in therapy, you will get some side eye from other therapists for sure.

If you haven’t ever been if therapy, you don’t know what’s it’s like to be on the other side: to know how much power and influence a therapist can wield; how hard it is to trust this random stranger with a degree to whom you pay money; what it feels like when questions are asked too hard or too quickly or just right; what it feels like when you are in a good grove and it’s shitty and hard and wonderful all the time; or what it’s like to feel like you might be dependant on a therapist and it scaring the fuck out of you; what good attunement in therapy feels like; what bad attunement in therapy feels like; what makes you feel safe in therapy and why that is; what happens when you are really fucking pissed at your therapist and how a good therapist handles it, or what a bad therapist does to not handle it; what a bad fit feels like with a good therapist; what a shit therapist feels like; what feels like support and what feels like dismissal, how it is to tolerate when someone else is dragging you through your own emotions.

All that stuff is in addition to the self-knowledge you need to be good at this - what pisses you off and what to do about it - and not even the big things! I fucking hate spit and didn’t know it until I started but I knew how to tolerate other stuff so I was able to apply that to a spitting situation. What shit you are carrying from your own trauma(s) or Trauma(s). What stuff you are carrying from your family of origin. Having a defined sense of self so that you don’t get wrapped up in your clients. Because some clients won’t get better and some don’t need your help; some will but that’s not up to us. What triggers you? A client who liked very much casually referred to me as a dyke in a joking way when the client was not any flavor of lbgtq and I had an enormous reaction to it but I knew why, I could process that if I expressed this to the client it would be harmful, was able to set a boundary around language in session and then cry in my car with on the phone with another queer therapist. It wasn’t about the client at all. It was my shit. But because of therapy - I knew it. I safely set a good, non-shaming boundary and we moved on to some amazing work. But without doing my own work - that wouldn’t have been the outcome. Or it would have taken a lot of mess to get there. You need choice around your actions in the room and unless you really look at it and have someone from the outside look at with it - those issues can be hard to see. Looking at why you want to do this. Looking at what this means to you.  Where are your boundaries? What’s flexible and what’s not? Can you tolerate others being dependant on you. Can you tolerate people getting mad or being attracted to you? What happens if you race/disability/gender/religion/fatness come into the room in a mean or an aggressive way? Because it might. It probably will. What your culture, racial, class-based, gender based, religious and familial biases are. It’s frustrating to see clinicians who don’t do their own work to expect marginalized populations to do their work for them or to make them “feel okay” about issues around race, class, disability, gender or sexuality. And this happens a lot. You will have feelings about all these things and dealing with them in the room with client can be extremely harmful

Please don’t let this discourage you from pursuing this career. For all I know you are in high school and have a lot of time. But seriously. If you and all the other therapists/therapists to be take nothing else from this blog - Do your own before you start seeing clients. Go therapy. Even if it’s just for a little while - I know it can be expensive and there are barriers to entry but include it in the price of admission to this profession.
