things i have observed about different fandoms

Harry Potter

  • your hogwarts house is more important than your name
  • so vast?? so old??? scary, kind of.
  • really old classic fics
  • used to have ship wars like all hell, and kind of still does??? but not really??? it’s better now
  • every other fandom has a harry potter au.
  • split into different sects that are practically whole different fandoms. there’s the marauders fandom, the golden trio/canon era fandom, the fantastic beasts fandom, the next gen fandom – they’re all like little umbrella fandoms under one great big potter net.
  • no one’s favorite character is harry potter.
  • they don’t talk about the cursed child.
  • will never die.

Hetalia

  • holy shIT this fandom is a minefield
  • a lot of teenagers??? like??? a lot???
  • an alarming amount of smut fic
  • i dont know a lot of this fandom is really immature and there are so many ship wars?? like???
  • ignoring actual historical material in favor of coddling your favorite character
  • the dub is one of the most quotable things i’ve ever seen
  • hetalia is very much a starter anime. a lot of people get into this anime as like a gateway drug and grow out of the fandom later on.
  • lots of bad fic, with rare absolute GEMS thrown in.
  • some fics are beautifully researched, intricate, historically accurate, and amazing. so much potential for fic in this fandom.
  • george devalier.

Les Miserables

  • frENCH
  • the main character is jean valjean
  • much of the fandom does not realize this.
  • les amis are love, les amis are life. jean valjean?? who??? javert??? who’s that?? fantine????? WHO THE FC U K
  • emerges from the deep once every few years when a movie or something else comes out.
  • The Movie Musical shot the fandom to new heights and launched a new era, but now has mostly calmed down???
  • also will never die. been around since 1862 and still going strong.
  • used to be eponine stans (eppyboppers) who hated cosette??? and usually shipped eponine with marius or enjolras. thank god that’s over.
  • literally everyone ships E/R.
  • even the actors ship E/R.

Homestuck

  • no
  • nOOOO
  • NOOOOO
  • dying??? (hopefully)

Haikyuu!!

  • sO MUCH GREAT FIC
  • oikawa tooru is universally adored
  • pretty much everyone ships the same things?? like obviously not, and there are so many great character dynamics and rarepairs, but ships like bokuaka, iwaoi, kagehina, etc. are so ingrained in the actual canon that everyone ships them a LITTLE bit, even if you ship the character different ways too.
  • you can ship anyone with anyone. literally. go fuckin wild.
  • everyone has normal hair except for the one owl guy.
  • incredible aus.
  • YOU SHOULD HAVE COME TO SHIRATORIZAWA

Yuri!! on Ice

  • EVERYONE SHIPS VICTUURI. IT IS AN ACTUAL CANON GAY SHIP AND IT IS GOLDEN.
  • at this point 90% of the fandom is just screaming over any new content they get b/c it’s all so great.
  • everyone under 20 gets shipped with yurio, and every one of these ships is somehow controversial.
  • fandom swings back and forth between wanting JJ to die in a fire or being ready to protect him to the ends of the earth.
  • sala or sara??? nobody can decide??? (spoiler alert: it’s sara, that’s a real italian name, sala is the word for living room.)
  • even the people who despise the dub can’t hate it THAT much
  • at one point the fandom hated chris, but now he’s just kind of the weird overly sexual uncle at the family barbecue
  • giaCOMEtti
  • kubo-sensei is a goddess

Honestly, Elizabeth.  It astounds me that you could be hornswoggled by something as simple to fabricate as a DNA profile.

i still think that the white haired dude being she li’s older brother would make a lot of sense, it’d explain why she li is already involved in that world and also his interest for jian yi

it would also make a great contrast with he tian: the two of them already have opposite color schemes - with he tian having black hair and grey eyes (that sometimes turn black), and she li having white hair and golden eyes - and i always felt like the reason why he tian is now living in his uncle’s apartment and doesn’t get along with his brother anymore is because he doesn’t want to be involved in the mafia, unlike she li who embraces that path

we also had guan shan thinking that he tian was the same as she li at the beginning, while in the end he found out that despite the ostensible similarities, he tian is actually quite the opposite, so it would make sense to me to keep up with this contraposition between the two

I'm not the same anon but I agree with the other anon!! I just think a lot of the lyrics on his past albums have been more ~meaningful~. Also I love his slower songs, which the other two albums seemed to have more of... but don't get me wrong!! I like divide too (it's a good get-up-and-dance album)! Just not as much as his last albums, I don't think...

Hi! It’s funny, because personally I feel the opposite! It seems to me like this album is more variegated and the lyrics are more personal and deep. Not that + or x didn’t have very serious lyrics or didn’t paint heartfelt sketches of everyday life, but Divide just comes off as …more to me? I’m thinking about Eraser, Perfect, Supermarket Flowers, Nancy Mulligan, Save Myself, Castle on the hill. And even the tracks that don’t come straight from his personal experience, or at least not his current situation, sound so very incisive to me. Of course it’s absolutely ok not to like this album as much as the other two (I mean, they were amazing albums, let’s be honest, both of them, they have songs I still listen to years later), I just didn’t think it could be because of the meaningful lyrics or variety of the tunes? But music is like literature, it does speak to us all differently, doesn’t it? :)

anonymous asked:

or you know, you can like abusive/manipulative characters because characters have flaws that cause progression, becky.

yes, for sure!!!!! absolutely :0c

ppl can like very different characters for very different reasons! i hope it didnt come off as me saying i didnt like the squips character bc i was more trying to convey that i enjoyed its character without condoning the things its done but apparently given this message i didnt do a good job on that @__@

the central point of the squip was to cause conflict within the story. its character was made in a way to do lots of things that would spiral into a head later on in the story. the squip did terrible things bc it was supposed to be terrible in order to cause conflict

I know I’m likely the lone voice in the fandom about this. But for the last time – TBB is far from racist if one familiarizes oneself with the Opium Wars, The Great Game (not the Sherlockian kind), Eight-Nation Alliance, the end of Imperial China, and the history of Modern China the last 105 years – it’s been like a game of falling dominoes except for the pieces are civilian casualties and broken nations and the reverberations from that single point of entry may never end for the people in the region. If one only perceives “orientalism” and has zero curiosity as for why the Asian characters were portrayed the way they did, please at least entertain the notion that maybe, just maybe, a 21st-century Western perspective is not the only one in conjecturing the whole picture.

I can talk to a lot of people about superficial things, but you’re the person I think of when I want to talk about something interesting or important to me.

And I think that says a lot about us.
And about how much I want you to be in my life.

(Forever.)

I want a Bechdel test for Jewish characters in anything where their Jewishness is more than saying their Jewish, or name dropping Chanukah, or y’know the Holocaust in general? If it’s a Holocaust movie it passes if they have a personality beyond being sad and Jewish and probably dying (I would say it passes if they are the focus and not their non-Jewish counterparts but than I think we just have Sophie’s Choice and Defiance so :/ )

Like even Fassbender’s Magneto whose Jewishness is discussed I guess…his one happy childhood memory is Chanukah candles?? I get that it’s recognizable iconography but can we dig a little deeper for once?

Give me a Jewish character wearing a god damn yarmulke. Maybe one with a mezuzah on their door. How about one who has to bring up Kosher because trust me if you are eating out with goys IT COMES UP. I worked in food service at a cafeteria and then at a bakery/cafe chain and I still had to educate people about what kosher was. DO THE BAR OR BAT MITZVAH THING ITS EASY AND ANY OBSERVANT JEW HAS ONE. (Paris Gellar from GIlmore Girls and the Harold from Hey Arnold pass for this)

Maybe one who references one of our 30 OTHER HOLIDAYS LIKE WE GOT BUNCHES OF THEM. (All of Rugrats passes for giving me a PESACH SPECIAL when I want to get festive for Passover it’s either this or Prince of Egypt those are literally my only good options)(Also West Wing…West Wing is very good for Jews there’s two of them and they are INTERESTING AND HAVE DIFFERENT OPINIONS, one’s religiously observant and the other isn’t and they don’t conveniently forget their Jewish during a Christmas episode??!?!)

Anything with Woody Allen fails because no thanks, Hashem take him and his dumb movies back. Glee obviously fails. Community fails, and I am on the fence about X-men since both iterations of Magneto drop the Jew thing after the first movie. (Oh I’m sorry I forgot Apocalypse brought him to AUSCHWITZ FOR THE WORST SCENE IN CINEMATIC HISTORY. No points for that one X-Men)

Idk what we would call it the Oy Vey test?

Inspired by Sense and Sensibility

It doesn’t take long for Colonel Howlett to fall for the young man whose family just arrived in the county, Charles Xavier, a vivid reminder of his lost love Jean. As they become friends, he sees in him the same kindness and hopeful nature that the world too often wants to crush as childish. This, his intelligence, playfulness, even his arrogance, everything is attractive to him. He doesn’t get the time to try courting him though, because when Charles meets Erik, it’s practically love at first sight. Close in age, similar tastes and interests -though very different opinions- they seem made for each other. Soon, everyone thinks they are all but formally engaged.

And then Erik leaves…

It was supposed to be a prompt for last year xavierine fest but I ended up not publishing it ^^’ I found it again and made a small manip. While I see Charles more as Elinor in many aspects (if only as he is the older sibling), I couldn’t help but use a bit of Marianne’s story to try to make a prompt.

Hi😊. I just started making my own content on my blog and was wondering if you could help me out with any tips on how to develop my own style when it comes to my works or where to get some inspiration for my writings. I’m asking you because I really like your works and you seem like you would give some good advice on this subject. Thanks😊

Do people really give advice on how to develop a style or find inspiration?  It seems like those are the two things that are so completely inherent to who you are as a writer and dependent on your individuality that advice would be somewhat pointless. My advice would be to just write whatever comes into your head and see where that takes you.

Inspiration is different for every person and for every story.  I don’t pretend to be anything more than a smut writer.  Most of my inspiration comes from sexual desire and a sudden need to see some idea manifest itself on my computer screen.  SPOILER ALERTS!!! Some examples from my writing are: Worth the Wait was inspired by a desire to show premature ejaculation in a story.  Nursemaid was inspired by this GIF of Jimin where he looked like he was in a state of ecstasy and I just suddenly thought – “He needs to get a handjob.”  Unexpected was inspired by my perverse interest in sloppy seconds and the lack of stories that explored that particular kink. Conditioned was inspired by the random desire to make Taehyung jerk off in public under orders from a more dominant woman.  None of these are high minded or complicated.  It’s all pretty base.  But then I take that idea and start thinking, “How can I put these into a context that seems feasible and real?”

Using Conditioned as an example, I had to figure out how to make the fantasy of Tae jerking off in public seem not entirely insane.  So then I toy with different ideas.  Where is he?  Who is he with? How did he get there?  Why is he willing to perform this act?  What is he feeling?  Why is he feeling this way?  So I come up with the idea of Tae meeting up with his teenage crush and he is instantly reminded of the horny teenager with no sexual outlet he used to be and now he wants to fulfill his past desires.  So then I think of how I can get him in a position to meet this former crush – thus the blind date scenario – and I just start writing.  While I’m writing, the story starts to unfold.  I know a lot of people have everything planned out ahead of time. I do not.  I have a rough idea of where I’m starting and where I think I’m headed, but everything in between just unfolds organically.  In this case, the idea of having the OC hooking up with Jimin was a spontaneous decision that I made to force Tae to work harder at gaining her attention and then I used that as a guide for the rest of the chapter.  I was only planning on having a couple paragraphs showing the OC’s and Tae’s backstory as teens, but once I started, I just kept going, so it was much more detailed than I ever intended.  I wasn’t even sure how I was going to get the two of them alone together as I was writing, but I’ve learned to just keep writing and look for the opportunities as they arise – so eventually it made sense that the OC might need to excuse herself to go to the bathroom and that was the opening for Tae to make a move.

The subsequent chapters have all been an outgrowth from that original chapter.  I start thinking, “What happens next? How does everyone feel about what happened in Chapter 1?”  And then I keep going.  As I write the following chapters, I start to get a sense of where the longer term plot is headed.  I was writing chapter 3 before I had any idea of where I planned on taking the overarching plot.  So, as of right now, I have a rough idea of what the ending should be, but I have no clue how I’m going to get there. I’m more character driven than plot driven, so I just trust that it will all work out in the end if I stay true to my characters and keep writing.

All my stories follow a similar path from inspiration to creation.  I’m not saying that’s the way you should do it because everyone is very different in their approach and what they are comfortable with.  I’ve tried mapping out detailed plot summaries and profiles in advance, but I still end up going off the rails and ending up with a story that I never expected to write.  Maybe you are the more organized type.  Maybe you have well thought out ideas and whole plot lines you want to express.  Do what feels natural to you.  The most important thing is to just get started.  You will refine the rest over time.

Did you hear about the new stuff surrounding Han Seo Her instagram live (the girl involved with TOP)? Thoughts? (it's fine if you don't want to answer this, I just heard about it and I'm kind of sad).

I was going to keep quiet about this whole thing, but since you asked my two cents about it, here it goes. You might want to sit down. Also, this is my own opinion, no one has to agree with me and any kind of hate will be blocked and ignored.

Whenever I see hisoillu it’s usually Hisoka that is chasing after Illumi, but what if its the other way around? What if Illumi’s the one who gets attached to Hisoka and Hisoka is just busy gathering other fruit? In some of the times that we’ve seen them together, Hisoka is busy doing his own thing while Illumi is guiding/taking care of Hisoka. So maybe the affections are somewhat reversed where Illumi likes to spend time with Hisoka, but Hisoka only wants to spend time with Illumi if they plan on fighting.

Could you please describe your friendship with your INFP friend? And was it hard for you to get into the INFP’s circle?

Yes, actually, because I entered her older sister’s friendship circle first and she didn’t like me for awhile, but once she realized I was no threat to her relationship with her sister and we were actually quite similar in all our tastes / interests (both huge history buffs, fantasy fans, sci-fi nerds, writers, artists, into costume design) then she let me in.

It’s… a very interesting relationship; it feels stable even though we do not interact often, so sometimes we go for months without seeing each other – but when we spend time together, it’s as if we / our friendship is stable, but both of us have changed an enormous amount in just the short time we’ve been apart – so our friendship is the same but nothing else is. I can count on her to have different opinions / interests than last time, and she can do the same with me. I tend to lead her into more philosophical / abstract conversations since I prioritize that (Ne), while she’s more focused on her sense of identity / her interests (Fi-dom).

In many ways, she seems freer with herself / more able to love herself than I am able to feel free or love myself. I feel such a ‘drive’ to finish things all the time (tert Te?) whereas she can happily do something for awhile, leave it half-finished and come back to it later – or not at all, and feel okay with that. She’s also much more self-confident in being ‘different’ and secure in her sense of identity (Fi) where I’m far less sure who I am or secure in what I want from life. Strangely, in some ways she can be more social / extroverted than me for short periods of time, but her focus tends to be on more intimate things (introvert) whereas I’m “the more the merrier” in my thinking and then soon ‘tire’ when in the group. (I guess the best way to describe her is passionate, whereas I’m INTENSE.)

Weirdly, while her sister and I have had plenty of rows, INFP and I never have. I’m not sure if that’s because we’re not ‘super close’ or because she doesn’t really correspond with me that much over e-mail or that we’re just more tolerant of each other’s views since there’s no cognitive conflicts anywhere.
