things i have observed about different fandoms

Harry Potter

  • your hogwarts house is more important than your name
  • so vast?? so old??? scary, kind of.
  • really old classic fics
  • used to have ship wars like all hell, and kind of still does??? but not really??? it’s better now
  • every other fandom has a harry potter au.
  • split into different sects that are practically whole different fandoms. there’s the marauders fandom, the golden trio/canon era fandom, the fantastic beasts fandom, the next gen fandom – they’re all like little umbrella fandoms under one great big potter net.
  • no one’s favorite character is harry potter.
  • they don’t talk about the cursed child.
  • will never die.

Hetalia

  • holy shIT this fandom is a minefield
  • a lot of teenagers??? like??? a lot???
  • an alarming amount of smut fic
  • i dont know a lot of this fandom is really immature and there are so many ship wars?? like???
  • ignoring actual historical material in favor of coddling your favorite character
  • the dub is one of the most quotable things i’ve ever seen
  • hetalia is very much a starter anime. a lot of people get into this anime as like a gateway drug and grow out of the fandom later on.
  • lots of bad fic, with rare absolute GEMS thrown in.
  • some fics are beautifully researched, intricate, historically accurate, and amazing. so much potential for fic in this fandom.
  • george devalier.

Les Miserables

  • frENCH
  • the main character is jean valjean
  • much of the fandom does not realize this.
  • les amis are love, les amis are life. jean valjean?? who??? javert??? who’s that?? fantine????? WHO THE FC U K
  • emerges from the deep once every few years when a movie or something else comes out.
  • The Movie Musical shot the fandom to new heights and launched a new era, but now has mostly calmed down???
  • also will never die. been around since 1862 and still going strong.
  • used to be eponine stans (eppyboppers) who hated cosette??? and usually shipped eponine with marius or enjolras. thank god that’s over.
  • literally everyone ships E/R.
  • even the actors ship E/R.

Homestuck

  • no
  • nOOOO
  • NOOOOO
  • dying??? (hopefully)

Haikyuu!!

  • sO MUCH GREAT FIC
  • oikawa tooru is universally adored
  • pretty much everyone ships the same things?? like obviously not, and there are so many great character dynamics and rarepairs, but ships like bokuaka, iwaoi, kagehina, etc. are so ingrained in the actual canon that everyone ships them a LITTLE bit, even if you ship the character different ways too.
  • you can ship anyone with anyone. literally. go fuckin wild.
  • everyone has normal hair except for the one owl guy.
  • incredible aus.
  • YOU SHOULD HAVE COME TO SHIRATORIZAWA

Yuri!! on Ice

  • EVERYONE SHIPS VICTUURI. IT IS AN ACTUAL CANON GAY SHIP AND IT IS GOLDEN.
  • at this point 90% of the fandom is just screaming over any new content they get b/c it’s all so great.
  • everyone under 20 gets shipped with yurio, and every one of these ships is somehow controversial.
  • fandom swings back and forth between wanting JJ to die in a fire or being ready to protect him to the ends of the earth.
  • sala or sara??? nobody can decide??? (spoiler alert: it’s sara, that’s a real italian name, sala is the word for living room.)
  • even the people who despise the dub can’t hate it THAT much
  • at one point the fandom hated chris, but now he’s just kind of the weird overly sexual uncle at the family barbecue
  • giaCOMEtti
  • kubo-sensei is a goddess

i still think that the white haired dude being she li’s older brother would make a lot of sense, it’d explain why she li is already involved in that world and also his interest for jian yi

it would also make a great contrast with he tian: the two of them already have opposite color schemes - with he tian having black hair and grey eyes (that sometimes turn black), and she li having white hair and golden eyes - and i always felt like the reason why he tian is now living in his uncle’s apartment and doesn’t get along with his brother anymore is because he doesn’t want to be involved in the mafia, unlike she li who embraces that path

we also had guan shan thinking that he tian was the same as she li at the beginning, while in the end he found out that despite the ostensible similarities, he tian is actually quite the opposite, so it would make sense to me to keep up with this contraposition between the two

I'm not the same anon but I agree with the other anon!! I just think a lot of the lyrics on his past albums have been more ~meaningful~. Also I love his slower songs, which the other two albums seemed to have more of... but don't get me wrong!! I like divide too (it's a good get-up-and-dance album)! Just not as much as his last albums, I don't think...

Hi! It’s funny, because personally I feel the opposite! It seems to me like this album is more variegated and the lyrics are more personal and deep. Not that + or x didn’t have very serious lyrics or didn’t paint heartfelt sketches of everyday life, but Divide just comes off as …more to me? I’m thinking about Eraser, Perfect, Supermarket Flowers, Nancy Mulligan, Save Myself, Castle on the hill. And even the tracks that don’t come straight from his personal experience, or at least not his current situation, sound so very incisive to me. Of course it’s absolutely ok not to like this album as much as the other two (I mean, they were amazing albums, let’s be honest, both of them, they have songs I still listen to years later), I just didn’t think it could be because of the meaningful lyrics or variety of the tunes? But music is like literature, it does speak to us all differently, doesn’t it? :)

anonymous asked:

or you know, you can like abusive/manipulative characters because characters have flaws that cause progression, becky.

yes, for sure!!!!! absolutely :0c

ppl can like very different characters for very different reasons! i hope it didnt come off as me saying i didnt like the squips character bc i was more trying to convey that i enjoyed its character without condoning the things its done but apparently given this message i didnt do a good job on that @__@

the central point of the squip was to cause conflict within the story. its character was made in a way to do lots of things that would spiral into a head later on in the story. the squip did terrible things bc it was supposed to be terrible in order to cause conflict

I want a Bechdel test for Jewish characters in anything where their Jewishness is more than saying their Jewish, or name dropping Chanukah, or y’know the Holocaust in general? If it’s a Holocaust movie it passes if they have a personality beyond being sad and Jewish and probably dying (I would say it passes if they are the focus and not their non-Jewish counterparts but than I think we just have Sophie’s Choice and Defiance so :/ )

Like even Fassbender’s Magneto whose Jewishness is discussed I guess…his one happy childhood memory is Chanukah candles?? I get that it’s recognizable iconography but can we dig a little deeper for once?

Give me a Jewish character wearing a god damn yarmulke. Maybe one with a mezuzah on their door. How about one who has to bring up Kosher because trust me if you are eating out with goys IT COMES UP. I worked in food service at a cafeteria and then at a bakery/cafe chain and I still had to educate people about what kosher was. DO THE BAR OR BAT MITZVAH THING ITS EASY AND ANY OBSERVANT JEW HAS ONE. (Paris Gellar from GIlmore Girls and the Harold from Hey Arnold pass for this)

Maybe one who references one of our 30 OTHER HOLIDAYS LIKE WE GOT BUNCHES OF THEM. (All of Rugrats passes for giving me a PESACH SPECIAL when I want to get festive for Passover it’s either this or Prince of Egypt those are literally my only good options)(Also West Wing…West Wing is very good for Jews there’s two of them and they are INTERESTING AND HAVE DIFFERENT OPINIONS, one’s religiously observant and the other isn’t and they don’t conveniently forget their Jewish during a Christmas episode??!?!)

Anything with Woody Allen fails because no thanks, Hashem take him and his dumb movies back. Glee obviously fails. Community fails, and I am on the fence about X-men since both iterations of Magneto drop the Jew thing after the first movie. (Oh I’m sorry I forgot Apocalypse brought him to AUSCHWITZ FOR THE WORST SCENE IN CINEMATIC HISTORY. No points for that one X-Men)

Idk what we would call it the Oy Vey test?

Discussion time:

So, a concept that I keep coming back to over the last several months of study and prayer and meditation is that the Torah should never be used as a weapon of self-harm. Meaning, that it is inappropriate and bad to use the Torah to justify physically harming yourself or psychologically damaging yourself.

Does anyone know if there is any textual support for this idea? Or is it just common sense? (Or, you know, a deeply held personal value of mine – that one’s religion should not be damaging to their health.)

To me, it just makes intuitive sense because it is my belief that G-d does not want us to suffer and takes no pleasure in people harming themselves in G-d’s name. Furthermore, it damages the person’s relationship with G-d, regardless of whether this self-harm is inflicted willingly and gladly, or reluctantly and/or by coercion. This is because in the former instance, the sufferer is inherently implying that G-d is sadistic and appreciates suffering for suffering’s sake in the name of G-d. And, in the latter instance, it more obviously breeds resent, anger, bitterness, and possibly even a complete rejection of G-d. Additionally, both things may occur if, after years of the former, the person slowly comes to hate the religious beliefs that have caused so much damage. So no matter how you look at it, it’s not going anywhere good.

But like I said – this is all philosophical/logic-based rather than textually based. I would be interested to know if anyone has ideas about either textual support for this idea or arguments against it.

Inspired by Sense and Sensibility

It doesn’t take long for Colonel Howlett to fall for the young man whose family just arrived in the county, Charles Xavier, a vivid reminder of his lost love Jean. As they become friends, he sees in him the same kindness and hopeful nature that the world too often wants to crush as childish. This, his intelligence, playfulness, even his arrogance, everything is attractive to him. He doesn’t get the time to try courting him though, because when Charles meets Erik, it’s practically love at first sight. Close in age, similar tastes and interests -though very different opinions- they seem made for each other. Soon, everyone thinks they are all but formally engaged.

And then Erik leaves…

It was supposed to be a prompt for last year xavierine fest but I ended up not publishing it ^^’ I found it again and made a small manip. While I see Charles more as Elinor in many aspects (if only as he is the older sibling), I couldn’t help but use a bit of Marianne’s story to try to make a prompt.

julikoloveszestiria  asked:

Random question because I feel like it: What is it about Sorey/Mikleo that really makes you like them so much? (Just curious, because I love them too!)

this is a difficult question to answer, at least for me. it’s not so much “there’s so much i love about them” or “what isn’t to love about them?” (although both are true). it’s more that i almost feel defensive answering.

i love this ship because sorey and mikleo feel like real people, and their relationship feels real. they care deeply about each other, and the game goes out of its way (moreso than the anime does) to make it explicit that they will do anything for each other.

i’ve read before that they were intended to be canon, but the producers felt the need to censor their relationship because they were worried about the potential negative feedback from the japanese audience. (not to say that they wouldn’t have had any negative feedback from their american / european audience, but that they felt justified in leaving it implied; it’s not so much gay-baiting as it was censored). [if anyone wants a source on that, you’ll have to give me some time; i’m typing this out right before i go to work.]

and i feel defensive answering this because of all of the zestiria fans who deny that sorey and mikleo had any romantic implications whatsoever. because of the way the anime has treated these two (and sorey in particular), and the way the anime is fueling them. i know i’m not justifying myself to those people (who i would go so far as to describe as homophobic – it’s like the people that deny yuuri and viktor from yuuri on ice were meant to be a couple; they are forcing straightness upon these two gay boys), but it feels that way.

okay, anyway, sorry for how personal that got. here’s some cute things i love about them:

  • they sleep in the same bed together. they wake up in the morning to each other’s face.
  • their love is eternal; mikleo waits thousands of years for sorey to wake up, and he greets him with a smile
  • sorey and mikleo cook for each other, and they enjoy doing it
  • they enjoy every moment they have together, even when times are hard
  • they only have eyes for each other; neither of them are shown to have feelings toward other characters, nor are they shown to ever be flustered by other characters or their partial nudity (lookin’ at you, hot spring skit)
  • they trust each other; even in instances that some couples might be looking to see signs of cheating, they don’t. sorey lets alisha sleep in his bed and mikleo doesn’t see an issue. alisha and sorey have a scene that lailah misinterprets, and mikleo never brings it up. (i wish i had more examples of vice versa, but mikleo just doesn’t have any instances like that with the ladies that i can think of)

ok that’s all i’m gonna say. i love them a lot, though, and their relationship means a lot to me. even if it is fictional. :^)

- mod eli

To add on to what Eli said, yes, one of the main reasons I love Mikleo and Sorey so much is their believability, which also in turn makes them so relatable.

They’re real and genuine together. They’re not forced and they don’t feel fake; their relationship and timeless friendship feels authentic. They have similar interests, but different opinions. They have different personalities and different likes and dislikes, but they grew up together. In fact, I think that’s one of my favorite details about them–the fact that they are literally childhood buddies who grew up to go on this incredile journey together. Like, it’s so endearing. How could they not love each other more than anything else in the world?? Especially after all they share together?

Honestly, they’re a breath of fresh air?? Their personalities combine so easily. Sorey’s bouyant enthusiasm and compassion–and Mikleo’s more reserved thoughtfulness and loyalty. And compound that with all of the memories and experiences they already share together that make them know the other so intimately and deeply, despite how different they are in character, and which makes them trust each other like the very air they breathe. All of that rings so inherently of all my favorite childhood romances. I adore them.

I love their togetherness. I love their unity. I love how much they care for each other. I love how dependable they are to one another.

I love all the little things, too:  that they cook for each other. That they live together. That they read together. That they explore together. That they journey together. That they fight together. That they dream together (which was a huge focal point of the entire game that the anime seems to have forgotten about). They do literally everything together; how can that not be romantic?

They’re so inherently and easily intertwined that they easily are one of my top favorite pairings of all time.

Just saying.

I know there is a lot of discourse in the Phandom over whether or not Dan and Phil are together romantically. As a person who has been a casual viewer of Dan and Phil for years now, I understand the urge to apply romantic infatuation to them. They’re two people who are obviously very close, and their story is a beautiful, comforting one that has brought happiness and admiration to the hearts of many, many people. And I think that’s what we should focus on here, not ‘Phan’ as a romantic concept, but rather the steady and loving relationship of Dan and Phil that is consistently displayed and has been for quite a long time. Whether or not they’re together romantically, I think there’s beauty there. I think there’s comfort in realizing that they’ve found a connection. Dan and Phil are a reminder that you have a person, whether that be a romantic or platonic one. Seeing them together all of these years has reminded me that that kind of connection is possible and that loneliness is not inevitable. They’re best friends, lovers, soulmates - whatever you’d like to call them - and they’ve built up a community of passionate, hilarious people who are endlessly creative, sometimes in strange ways, but otherwise beautifully. Please remember that platonic love is just as prominent and overwhelmingly fantastic as romantic love. Remember to be kind to the other people in your fandom, even if they differ from you. And most importantly, remember that Dan and Phil are people who love each other, in whatever way they want to or need to. It’s a personal decision. A precise, emotional feeling that belongs to them and them only. Please, acknowledge the love between them, perceive it how you want to, but remember it’s not yours to manipulate. And either way, I believe you should be happy because there are two people out there who sit on a couch together, surrounded by nerdy items in complete comfort because they’re together. That’s all that matters in the long run, I think. Appreciate them. Respect them. Do the same to each other. Have a nice day!!

I have 3 prompts that go together so well, y’all have no idea how bloody happy I am.

@spacequnari Lore and headcanons spam is my favorite kind, never worry about it. 😃 I know it’s a grey area (hey, look, a pun) but that’s also why hearing people’s opinions about it is so fascinating.

i dont…. get why people get angry about others tagging their art as kin. its not hurting anyone and tbh i see it as more of a compliment than anything, that they feel my art represents them and they can relate to it!

im not kin and i dont really understand it i guess but honestly, does it matter? unless you specifically say in the description or in your bio or somewhere else accessible, i dont think you should assume people will know. because as far as i can tell, the majority of artists dont care either way, so someone might easily forget to check.

if youre tagging someones art as kin/me/whatever when theyve asked people not to, i guess its sort of a dick move, but only if you know! if you didnt, its fine. all you can do is be more careful in future.

very personal art or ocs are a different matter i guess, but for me at least theres nothing particularly personal about the fanart i draw. so thats why i dont care what people tag it as! (unless maybe if its something negative, but thats not what im talking about so its irrelevant.)

i dont think someone should be required to share the reasons they dont want people to tag their art as kin and im definitely not saying that people cant be uncomfortable with it at all - but i do feel its unfair to treat it as something awful and invasive if the person who tagged it didnt know it would make you uncomfortable.
even if it’s in your bio - sometimes people dont think to read them! so if its that important to you that people dont tag your art like that, the best way to avoid it is to put it in the post itself.

Whenever I see hisoillu it’s usually Hisoka that is chasing after Illumi, but what if its the other way around? What if Illumi’s the one who gets attached to Hisoka and Hisoka is just busy gathering other fruit? In some of the times that we’ve seen them together, Hisoka is busy doing his own thing while Illumi is guiding/taking care of Hisoka. So maybe the affections are somewhat reversed where Illumi likes to spend time with Hisoka, but Hisoka only wants to spend time with Illumi if they plan on fighting.

I can talk to a lot of people about superficial things, but you’re the person I think of when I want to talk about something interesting or important to me.

And I think that says a lot about us.
And about how much I want you to be in my life.

(Forever.)

You're great because you're so positive. You never shoot down people's suggestions or tell them their ideas are bad.

That’s really nice of you, thank you! I think all ideas should be given attention and treated respectfully, as long as the ideas aren’t hurting others. People have different interests and opinions and instead of tearing each other down because of these differences I think we should lift each other up and encourage each other. Nothing kills creativity more than putting water on the fire of passion.

anonymous asked:

Why dont you like Moffat who?

Why? Well here goes

Here’s what each companion taught me:

·         Rose Tyler

Rose taught me that it didn’t matter if you weren’t the best at school. She taught me that it didn’t matter if you were “ordinary”.  She taught me that women can be just as awesome (if not more) than men. But overall Rose taught me that I could seem like the least important person on the planet, but I could mean so much more.

·         Mickey Smith

Mickey taught me that being a bit silly is ok. He taught that the person you think is soul-mate, maybe isn’t, and that’s ok. But overall Mickey taught me you are important and capable, no matter what other people say.

·         Jack Harkness

Jack taught me that you can be extroverted and confident. He taught me that you can do bad things in life, but in the end things get better, But overall Jack taught me that eventually, no matter how out of place you feel, eventually you will find somewhere you fit in.

·         Martha Jones

Martha taught me that brains can be a good thing too. That if you do manage to get a good job and are a nice person, it will be rewarded. She taught me that you can love someone and still be badass. She taught me you can be feminine and still be just as good as everyone else. She taught me that wisdom is important.  She taught me that knowledge is important. But overall Martha taught me that being a good person, and knowing your value, is the most important thing.

·         Donna Noble

Donna taught me that knowing yourself is important. She taught me that knowing that you are important, and letting others know, is very important. She taught me that in life you should do what you want, and not what other people want. She taught me that the most important thing in life is to believe in yourself. She taught me to see the lighter side of life. But overall Donna taught me that bravery and kindness and appreciating yourself are so important in life.

·         Amy Pond

Amy taught me to get anywhere in life you must be pretty and good at fighting and slim. She taught me that you have to be special or different for people to notice you. But overall Amy taught me that you should wait for people no matter how long they leave you.

·         Rory Williams

Rory taught me that unless you are “hot” or clever or witty you will be forgotten. He taught me that if you’re not perfect you become “the side-kick”. But overall Rory taught me that being clumsy or un-interesting means you will be a failure

·         River Song

River taught me that if you are in love with someone, your whole life revolves around them. She taught me that you should have blind faith in people. She taught me that breaking the law is cool. But overall River taught me that no matter where in time and space you are, your life will always revolve around the one you love

·         Clara Oswald

Clara taught me that to be interesting you must be “the chosen one” or something similar. She taught me that staying with a mental abuser is ok. She taught me that you must be “different to other girls”. She taught me you must be pretty or quirky or feisty. But overall she taught me that to get noticed or to find a friend, first they must be obsessed with finding out every aspect of your life

·         Danny Pink

Danny taught me that sometimes in life you do wrong things, but you will never be forgiven. He taught me that you shouldn’t have an opinion really. But overall he taught me no matter who you are now; the past is all that matters

So yeah, that’s why I don’t like Moffat who.
