Some photos of my kenku costume at Anthrocon 2016, taken by @adammillerstudio! Oh boy did I ever have a lot of fun! The other raven in these photos is @qawstume and the snowy owl we are mobbing is @crystumes, who made both of the blanks that we used for our masks.

If you have any questions about this costume please check out my FAQ!

let me tell you something:

no one is going to look at you, broken and shattered
and think -
damn, you are beautiful.

no one is going to come pick up your broken pieces off the floor and
assemble them into a beautiful whole.

hell,
you won’t even look at yourself and think -
I made broken look beautiful.

you know why?

because all those writers lied to you.

yes,
all those with their poems of scraped knuckles and
blood dripping down chins,
pomegranate songs and loves that ripped through you like
hurricanes.

liars.

so you and i,
we are going to make a plan.

you are not going to romanticize days when your brain tells you to smash that mirror,
you are not going to romanticize the lover who doesn’t understand you
but still writes about you.

here is what you are going to romanticize instead:

you are going to romanticize the first day of spring,
its gentle hands all over your body,
lifting you up until you are as light as a feather.

you are going to romanticize the tea and honey kind of love,
no hurricanes,
but sunshine that builds you up from within,
that helps you make it through the worst days.

you are going to romanticize gentle hands of a friend
in yours,
telling you that it is going to be okay.

because it is.

and don’t trust poets,
we’re no good,
we love pretending that our jagged edges tantamount to a beautiful disaster, but in reality -
there ain’t nothing beautiful about shaky hands holding a cigarette and
empty eyes staring at the cracks in the walls.

you know what is beautiful, instead?

the days when you can look at yourself in the mirror and smile,
scars and all.

music that makes your soul flow like a river,
books that offer comfort,
families flocking together like overgrown birds to keep you safe and warm,
friends that give you strength when you can find none,
lovers who make you laugh through tears.

baby,
from now on
you are going to romanticize healing;

honey dripping down your fingertips,
August nights that stick to your skin,
the day you find your purpose,
long car rides and singing so loud that no one can shut you up now.

bad news:
no one is coming to save you.

good news:
you can save yourself.

wait do you guys agree with rebecca? do you think i’m a bad mom?

sometimes when pidge looks at herself in the mirror, she sees matt.

it’s in the golden brown of her eyes, the way they catch the light that seems to dance along her irises. the small freckles dotting her skin like the constellations matt would talk about when she was younger.

it’s in the subtle curves of her face when her mouth is quirked in a smile, the tiny crinkle of her eyes when she squints. the small gap between her front teeth that they both share.

it’s in the gentle waves of her hair, curling out in a way that seems to engulf her entire face. the bridge of her nose that arches out to hold her brother’s glasses.

sometimes when pidge looks at herself in the mirror, she cries.

anonymous asked:

Um the "slaves" u talk about in the middle east are not tricked into anything, they willingly come and sign up for a job cuz either they can't get one at home, or other reasons. And these "pennies" you speak of are enough for them to build a mansion.

(Here) you can learn about how the migrant workers you claim are being treated well and are being paid enough to build mansions themselves protested against their lack of pay and abuse–and how their employers, instead of listening to their demands, insisted that they go home.

(Here) you can hear from not one but tens of thousands of south/east asian and african men and women that attest to being tricked into coming to Dubai, they will tell you about how their passports were taken from them upon landing, and how they were they told that their first six months of work would be pay-less. They will tell you about how they were told that their living conditions would be spotless and comfortable, and their shock at discovering the reality of the actual living conditions.

(Here) you can hear about how a sixteen year old Nepalese boy died of cardiac arrest while working under conditions that no human should ever be forced to work in. You can also hear about how Nepalese men make up the largest proportion of migrant workers but are the least paid. In this documentary you can hear from men that were promised a salary of 800 dollars, but were told they would be paid less than $300 when they landed. You can again hear about how their passports were withheld from them.

(Here) you can learn about the number of migrant workers in Qatar that are going to die working under inhumane conditions before the first match for the Qatar World Cup even kicks off.

1-2 Nepalese migrant workers have died every single day since construction has begun–and that’s just one demographic of the hundreds of thousands of migrant workers.

(Here) you can learn about how migrant workers are forced to work for 12 hours a day under life threatening conditions, all day every day and sometimes for no pay at all.

(Here) you can learn about how migrant workers were refused water until they worked a certain amount of hours, how their passports were taken from them so they would not leave, how they had to escape their camps and go to their embassies to escape the brutality of their employers.

Let’s talk about the nepalese boy again–he left his family in Nepal to go to Qatar so he could pull them out from their state of poverty. It was only weeks later that he returned to the same family in a coffin. Do you know what it takes to induce cardiac arrest in a 16 year old, healthy boy? Do you know what kind of physical peril a 16 year old child has to go through to die of cardiac arrest?

There are 1.3 million migrant workers in Qatar right now that bear the brunt of mistreatment and that have built Qatar from nothing. And what are they given in return? Shallow graves? close to nothing for pay? 12 hour work days in up to 50 C degree weather? What mansions are you deluding yourself with? The Gulf States do not and have not ever cared about migrant workers, they treat them like they are subhuman, the failure to pay them is documented and well known. The fact that these men are tricked into thinking that they will be paid larger amounts, live in better conditions is documented and well known. The face that these men are forced into working under perilous conditions every day is documented and well known. The migrant workers that you claim are being treated well have themselves protested their abuse. What are you getting by making it seem as if these workers are treated better than they are? Why are you so uncomfortable when faced with the reality that these people are treated like machinery? (1, 2, 3

*slams head into a pillow*

Gosh - OK - first sorry for the random absence! Just suddenly got busy within life o-o

And not just that… but I got a question on my Wall on UT Amino about if there was a Fell!PJ, and if PJ is a jerk - is Fell!PJ more of a jerk?

And while I know there are Fell!PJ’s out there already that answer this as a ‘yes’ - I just… I suddenly thought how he WOULDN’T be a bigger jerk and in fact… would be TERRIFIED constantly.

Just first - I never really think that Fell versions of out code characters can exist. Just due to how the multiverse is.

But IF there was a Fell!Error and Fell!Ink - THIS is what Fell!PJ would be like:

Gosh - not much difference at first glance - but:

  • He is on edge all the time - Scared constantly. Always in fear. Hence why his left eye default is a circle - not a diamond like the original.
  • Instead of marching off angerly at 15 like his main counterpart - he runs away in a panic at 10.
  • His fell parents? Both took him under their watch - altering between one, the other, or both. They saw PJ as an opportunity to craft him into what they needed - and used different tactics to do it.
(Again - honestly I doubt Error and Ink could have a Fell version anyway so I was just going on a huge idea burst with that one)
  • Fell!PJ moves from AU to AU - not to judge, but to hide. He feels more comfort in a solid world than the white void. Still - can’t stay for too long - he knows he leaves tracks behind.
  • When and if he gets to know someone kind and is able to calm down - he will be more like original PJ - except he will catch himself on what he said and will apologize for it over and over. He doesn’t want to be anything like his parents - yet he still got that sarcastic yet straight forward attitude one of them has…
  • His splat mark on his cheek spreads out like a slap mark. It’s due to having been hit on that side too many times that the colored marks is just his way of ‘bandaging it up’

And well - his face colors look like this:

His hoodie is magenta/black, with the long sleeves below being purple/blue like his side pack. He would have orange and blue specks on his shorts and no ‘leggings’ like the original.

As you can see - I thought WAY TOO MUCH INTO THIS GOODNESS.
(yet still don’t know what the parents would have done to make him that scared all the time… heh… hard for me to think of how a fell Ink and Error would be like I guess…)

Birds Make the Best Wingmen

When Stiles invites Derek over for dinner on their second date, it seems that Stiles’ pet parrot is determined to ruin his life. Then again, maybe birds actually make the best wingmen…

aka: 3-in-the-morning-me read an unrelated text post on parrots and happened to be making sterek icons, and went hey, sterek plus parrots!

“Dude,” Scott sighs. “If it makes you this nervous, just don’t do it.”

“Excuse you?” Stiles scoffs. “Don’t go on my date with Derek? Is that what you just said? You’re not going to make me give you the speech on his eyes again, are you? Because I have it memorized, man, and-”

“No, no, no!” Scott says, waving his PS4 controller wildly. When his Titan gets shot, he mutters, “Worth it. I just meant that if you don’t want to have him over here, then don’t. Go out somewhere instead.”

“I can’t,” Stiles groans. “You know I can’t. He cooked me dinner for our first date, so I have to cook him dinner for our second.”

It’s only fair, really. The only problem is his and Scott’s apartment is a mess, his cooking skills are mostly limited to super healthy and not-date-worthy stuff for his dad, and—though Stiles doesn’t view it as much of a problem, considering the number of nights Allison has spent here—Scott’s being sexiled for the night. Technically Stiles told him he could stay in his room, if he wanted, considering the worst thing they’ll probably do tonight is kiss, but thankfully Scott was much more into the idea of making out with Allison than listening to Stiles potentially make out with Derek.

“Look, it’s pretty clean in here for two college guys,” Scott reasons, for the tenth time today. Stiles is pretty sure it’s just because he doesn’t want to stop playing Destiny in favor of vacuuming. “I seriously doubt he’ll care if you order takeout, anyway. You just gotta chill. Right, Iago?”

“Right, Scott!” Iago squawks. “Right, Scott! Right, Scott!”

Scott had taught Stiles’ parrot to respond ‘right, Scott’ anytime he hears ‘right, Iago?’ two years ago, and still takes far too much pleasure in having a bird agree with him.

Stiles feels very little sympathy when Scott gets gunned down again as he beams over at the cage.

“Scott’s an overly-optimistic knucklehead who doesn’t understand the woes of us normal people who aren’t dating our first love five years later, right, Iago?” Stiles asks.

“Right, Scott!”

Close enough.

“Nice place,” Derek says, hanging his jacket on one of the hooks by the door. “And dinner smells great.”

“Ah, it’s nothing,” Stiles says, despite having slaved over the stove for three hours. “Lasagna. Here, c’mon, let’s sit down.”

Derek follows him to the living room, but when he sits down on the couch, Derek doesn’t join him. Instead, he walks over to Iago’s cage, peering in.

“You have a parrot?”

“Oh, yeah,” Stiles says, adjusting himself so he’s facing them. “His name’s Iago.”

“Does he talk?”

“Yeah, actually. It’s kinda awesome. He only understands about as much as a dog, probably, but if you say something enough times he’ll start to repeat it, and he understands a few basic things. Like, um- Iago, hello!”

“Hello!” Iago squawks.

Derek smiles–the amazing, warm one that makes his eyes crinkle—and Stiles never wants it to go away. And if that means playing with his bird instead of making small talk? Well, he’s not going to complain.

“Iago, this is Derek,” Stiles says, even though he won’t really get that one.

Unfortunately, he does seem to remember the word ‘Derek’.

“Derek is the best!”

Stiles’ eyes practically bug out of his head, because that’s actually something he says all the time, and the last thing he needs is for Iago to start parroting everything he’s ever heard about Derek, because… no.

Derek glances over at Stiles, eyebrow raised.

“Just a trick we taught him,” Stiles explains, with a nervous laugh.  “If you say ‘this is someone’, he’ll say they’re the best.”

He stands and rushes over, grabbing the towel they use to cover Iago’s cage before Derek can get a chance to test that lie.

“Say bye, Iago,” Stiles says, draping the cloth over his cage.

“Bye! Bye!”

Crisis averted.

Phew.

“He’s cute,” Derek says, as Stiles ushers him over to the couch. “He’s named after the bird in Aladdin, right?”

“Yeah, he’s great,” Stiles agrees. “And yep. How’d you know?”

Derek’s awesome, but something about his leather jacket and black Camaro doesn’t give off much of an I-watch-Disney-movies-in-my-spare-time vibe.

“I’ve got a lot of nieces and nephews,” Derek says. He smiles again at the thought, which is far too adorable. “I’ve seen every kids’ movie more times than I can count. Or would even want to count.”

“Aw, that’s cool. I’m an only child, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Scott and his girlfriend start planning-”

The ding of the oven cuts him off.

“Um, gimme one sec,” he says, patting Derek’s knee–don’t ask why, dear God, he has no idea why—and getting up to check on dinner. “Be right back.”

Stiles takes the pan out of the oven, setting it down on the countertop.

“Derek?” he calls.

“It’s ready?” Derek calls back, at the same time Iago repeats, “Derek!”

“Iago, stop it!” Stiles orders, poking his head into the living room.

“Stop it!” he echoes. It’s another of his favorite things to say, unfortunately. “Derek! Stop it! Derek!”

“Sorry, Derek,” Stiles sighs. “He’s a jerk sometimes.”

“It’s fine,” Derek says, standing from the couch. “Not a problem.”

Before he reaches the kitchen, though, Iago interrupts again.

“Derek! Derek! Derek is so hot!”

Derek freezes. Stiles freezes. Iago, unfortunately, does not freeze.

“Derek is so hot!” he repeats, from underneath his towel. “Derek is so hot! Derek is so hot!”

Stiles’ cheeks are probably as red as Iago’s feathers.

“That another trick?” Derek asks, raising an eyebrow as the bird continues his ode to Derek’s hotness in the background.

“I- uh…”

“Or just one of the things he picked up by repetition?”

“Ummm…”

Stiles is going to die. He is actually, literally going to fall on the floor and have his heart stop beating from sheer embarrassment.

Or he would do that, except then Derek winks.

He fucking winks, then smirks, then walks back over to the birdcage, pulling the cover off.

“Derek is so hot!” Iago repeats vehemently upon its removal. “Derek is the best! Derek is so hot!”

“Stiles is so hot,” Derek tells him seriously.

Stiles gapes at him, but Derek doesn’t even look over.

Stiles is so hot,” he says again. “Stiles.”

“Stiles is so hot!” Iago agrees. “Derek is so hot! Stiles is so hot!”

“Smart bird,” Derek says, finally glancing over at Stiles.

He’s smiling again, and Stiles decides he very well may die, but perhaps not for the reason he thought.

When Scott gets home the next day and asks how the date with Derek went, only for Iago to squawk ‘Derek is so hot! Stiles is so hot!’, he flops down on the couch, muttering, “I take it back. I don’t even want to guess what that’s about.”

On B.A.P’s “Blue” and what makes a good album cover

So the album cover for Blue was released last night, and while I have my doubts about the design I’m not all that surprised that this is what we got. K-pop in general has a lot of album covers of questionable quality, due to the incredibly high amount of album/single releases the industry has every year. However, that doesn’t mean that we’re not allowed to criticise them rather than ignoring them.

Still, instead of making more memes about the unmotivated album covers TS has given us in the past year, I thought I’d make a quick post on what makes a good album cover, and why TS’ album covers are worth criticising.

All general rules of graphic design aside, there are some key qualities an album’s cover art should have in order to do an artist justice, and here they are:

  1. The cover art should be easily discernible/stand out.
  2. The cover art should be memorable.
  3. The cover art should describe the artist or the album in some way (either the sound or the message promoted).
  4. The cover art should be minimalistic/uncluttered (this is not so much a rule as it is a tendency found in good modern examples. Minimalism has become highly favoured in media today and it’s easier to make a piece of album art that has the previous qualities using the minimalist approach).

So with that in mind, let’s have a look at the cover art TS Entertainment released for Blue, and keep the desired qualities in mind:

Now, on a personal level I actually don’t mind these designs. I think they’re quite pretty and soothing to look at. From a design perspective, however, these have flaws. So let’s look at how they pertain to the points I mentioned earlier.

The cover art should be easily discernible/stand out. Imagine if you were in a record shop and you were scanning the new releases for something to listen to (already I’ve dated myself, but bear with me). Would this design pop? If you were standing 10 meters (or 30 feet) away from this cover would you be able to see what it was? It’d probably just look like a vague blue blob, and unless the other albums were completely devoid of colour and blue happened to be your favourite colour, you probably wouldn’t pay this cover art much attention.

The cover art should be memorable. If the cover art has caught someone’s eye in the first place it needs to have some part that is visually memorable. Some part that sticks with them so that they’ll have an image in their mind when they think of the album. Personally and on a wider scale, I don’t think there’s anything in this cover that has that ability, but for individual people it might be different.

The cover art should describe the artist or the album in some way. This is what this album cover does best. We can’t assume anything entirely until the album has been released and we’ve heard the songs, but from the teasers and descriptions we’ve gotten it seems like the album resonates quite well with the cover art. The fresh and breezy blue works with the summer-y feel of the album and the sky matches the message about freedom that we’ve heard this album will be about. Additionally, the crescent moon/eclipse theme works with the title song’s name, Honeymoon, and the release date of the teaser.

The cover art should be minimalistic/uncluttered. The art is definitely minimalistic, which is what I think a lot of people like about it. It’s got that relaxing summer aesthetic feel going for it which is nice, but this point was more of a means to an end, and I don’t think the design reached the end.

So why do I think this design is disappointing?

The purpose of any album cover is to advertise the album in question, it’s a part of an artist’s marketing scheme. We know that TS Entertainment fumbles a lot when it comes to marketing their artists and this is no different. Good cover art will stand out and become imprinted in people’s minds, making them more likely to buy the album or share it with friends, which is why I dislike the fact that TS has given us very little as far as cover art goes in the last year.

This is not something that is B.A.P’s fault, or even the people hired to design the album cover. It is completely to blame on TS. We know TS has more than enough money to promote and invest in B.A.P, because B.A.P is a famous group that makes a lot of money for their company. But the truth is that TS aren’t willing to invest more than the bare minimum in B.A.P (this isn’t really a good business strategy for them, but they’ve always been bad at running a company). Pointing out and reflecting on what we dislike about the album design is just another part of being willing to criticise things we think aren’t good.

If someone got through this post and is interested, I’d be happy to add onto it and talk about some examples of album cover art done well (both from B.A.P and other groups), because I think it’s a fun opportunity to learn and discuss it.

High-Waisted, Short-Tempered - h.s.

My friend went to a disaster of a family reunion and my other friend went to a concert and wore uncomfortable shorts to look nice and for some reason those two things got stuck in my head during my flight and so therefore I wrote a blurb about it while I have time and I think this is probably how my writing will go on from now on instead of seven part series so yay here we go!

You hadn’t talked for almost an hour, and though many would have figured you were asleep, Harry knew better than to think so. He’d been working with you for almost two years now and that meant spending every single day with you 365 days give or take a couple. And he could tell when you were really sleeping … because it was absolutely adorable.

He knew he shouldn’t have asked to come with you. He knew that even though you were in good standings with your grandparents, it was the cousins that always got you agitated. But he couldn’t help himself when you’d talked about the initiation to the family reunion and how your older cousin now married, Tiff, had told you to, “Bring a friend!”
