There will always be a special place in my heart for “U.F.O. Instant Yakisoba” as it reminds me of the good ol’ days of dorm life when I was going to university in Japan. There was always a pot of boiling water on the stove and many a late night meal was eaten out of the these white styrofoam “bowls”. Which is why whenever I see a new flavor of “UFO” hit shelves, I am incapable of passing it up.
On my last trip to Tokyo I scored the box you see above, “Abura Soba with Kimchi Mayo”.
Abura soba, which translates as “oil noodles”, is a sauceless preparation of ramen where soy sauce and some sort of fat, usually pork, is used to flavor the noodles. Then there’s a wide variety of toppings that different chefs and shops include on their preparations. For this instant version, which had thicker noodles, Nissin chose to include scallions, seaweed and kimchi flavored mayonnaise.
I have to say, this was one of the better varieties of UFO I’ve had!! Would definitely buy another one if I ever had the chance.
