individualization of responsibility

no one on this green earth ever wants to rely on the kindness of strangers on the internet for their next meal/bus ride/surgery/bills. nobody wants this extremely precarious and dangerous reality to be theirs. it is the most humiliating and nauseating situation to be in.

so if someone makes a post that’s like “hello please help me out”, understand that they are already in an excruciatingly painful situation. your pathetic jabs about asking for money etc are not only entirely unfounded but they are just unwarrantedly evil. Stop criminalizing people just because you’ve been brainwashed to think you and other privileged people are the only ones who deserve sustenance, basic necessities or luxuries. None of your “arguments” for individual responsibility make any sense and your only accomplishment is that you’ve caused an already troubled person even more pain.

All too often we are told by liberal environmentalists, and not a few deep ecologists, that it is “we” as a species or, at least, “we” as an amalgam of “anthropocentric” individuals that are responsible for the breakdown of the web of life. I remember an “environmental” presentation staged by the Museum of Natural History in New York during the 1970s in which the public was exposed to a long series of exhibits, each depicting examples of pollution and ecological disruption. The exhibit which closed the presentation carried a startling sign, “The Most Dangerous Animal on Earth.” It consisted simply of a huge mirror which reflected back the person who stood in front of it. I remember a black child standing in front of that mirror while a white school teacher tried to explain the message which this arrogant exhibit tried to convey. Mind you, there was no exhibit of corporate boards of directors planning to deforest a mountainside or of government officials acting in collusion with them.
—  Murray Bookchin

I think a big part of how I see the world is that -

In college I was sick. In particular I was anorexic, and I nearly starved myself to death. I never accomplished anything, made commitments I couldn’t keep, lost track of time, and struggled with the most basic life tasks. I was anxious (mostly because I correctly knew that everything was going horribly) and lazy (because I could not possibly do enough things to matter, and doing things was hard and hurt) and unreliable and terrible. I ended up owing people a lot of money (I have since paid them all back) and failing at things that were really important to me and to other people.

And now I am in a good environment for me. I live with people who I can be reasonably assured don’t hate me and will tell me when they need me to do things differently, and I am no longer anxious. My work has clear expectations and is bite-sized and doesn’t pile up on me, and I reliably deliver it and do a good job. I have enough money I don’t have to deal with the mental overhead of deciding whether to buy the food I want, and I spend that mental overhead on better things. I am still messy and I am still bad at getting places on time, but I’m never late on rent. I am mostly a productive, honest, trustworthy, reliable person and I’m getting better at those things. I have friends and kiss girls (and the occasional boy) and I make a positive difference in peoples’ lives.

Some of the difference was immaturity and lack of skills; much of the difference is that I had starved my brain until it stopped functioning; much of the difference was that I was in an environment that was not shaped to my strengths. But living through it gave me this powerful sense that the difference between a “lazy” person and a “successful” person, between a reliable person and an unreliable person, between a “good” person and a “bad” person, is a lot about whether they are in an environment shaped to their strengths. That almost everybody will be great in the right environment and really really struggle in a bad one. And some people have never ever encountered a bad one and think they’re just inherently great; and some people have never encountered a good one, and think they’re just inherently miserable and hard to get along with and unreliable and untrustworthy.

I absolutely think people are still accountable for the things they do in bad environments. I’ve worked really hard to fix the things I fucked up at when I was sick, and I don’t mean “it’s all the environment” to mean “it’s not you”. Just - the same you who was miserable and did bad things will be happy and do good things, in better circumstances, and lots of the human project is building those circumstances.

I don’t know how to give everyone an environment in which they’ll thrive. It’s probably absurdly hard, in lots of cases it is, in practical terms, impossible. But I basically always feel like it’s the point, and that anything else is missing the point. There are people whose brains are permanently-given-our-current-capabilities stuck functioning the way my brain functioned when I was very sick. And I encounter, sometimes, “individual responsibility” people who say “lazy, unproductive, unreliable people who choose not to work choose their circumstances; if they go to bed hungry then, yes, they deserve to be hungry; what else could ‘deserve’ possibly mean?” They don’t think they’re talking to me; I have a six-figure tech job and do it well and save for retirement and pay my bills, just like them. But I did not deserve to be hungry when I was sick, either, and I would not deserve to be hungry if I’d never gotten better.

What else could ‘deserve’ possibly mean? When I use it, I am pointing at the ‘give everyone an environment in which they’ll thrive’ thing. People with terminal cancer deserve a cure even though right now we don’t have one; deserving isn’t a claim about what we have, but about what we would want to give out if we had it. And so, to me, horrible people who abuse others all the time deserve an environment in which they would thrive and not be able to abuse others, even if we can’t provide one and don’t even have any idea what it would look like and sensibly are prioritizing other people who don’t abuse others. If you have experiences, you deserve good experiences; if you have feelings, you deserve happy feelings; if you want to be loved, you are worthy of love. You flourishing is a moral good; everybody flourishing is in fact the only moral good, the entire thing morality is for. Your actions should have consequences, sure, and we should figure out how to build a world where those consequences are ones that you can handle, and where you can amend the things that you do wrong. When you hurt people, that can change what “you thriving” looks like, because part of thriving is fixing, and growing from, things you have done wrong; but nothing you do can change that it is good for you to thrive.

I reject that I ever deserved to starve, and so I reject that anyone, ever, deserves to starve. I reject that I ever deserved to suffer, and so I reject that anyone, ever, deserves to suffer. Happiness is good. Your happiness is good. And without a single exception anywhere I want you to thrive.

Transiting Venus in Libra
October 14, 2017 - November 7, 2017

Aphrodite is at home when Venus is in Libra and she activates the lover in everybody. We approach our social life, relationship, and matters of romance like we are consuming sugar, and there is a real desire to luxuriate in our natural pleasures. Also, the actual consumption of sugar can increase, because Venus is the ruler of confectionery, sugar, and sweet treats. This is a good time for appreciating the quality of relationships in our life, be it with friends, lovers, or family members. The energy of Libra is all about connection, harmony, and unity. If you have been feeling disconnected or isolated, Aphrodite responds with her appetite for togetherness, and she encourages us to re-establish and maintain contact with other people. She exhales the breath of tranquility, so it’s possible to resolve conflicts and disagreements. Venus also rules over financial matters, and she is prone to excess in her own sign. It means that we can become less concerned with financial responsibility and spend more money on personal luxuries like new clothes, make up, dining out, alcohol, caramel mochas, home decore, and social events. The relationship sector is the whipped cream of life with Venus in Libra. It’s a time for spending weekends cozying up to loved ones watching Netflix, cooking with lovers, getting a new hairstyle and feeling your most beautiful, and enjoying the traditions of dating and old fashioned romance. Transiting Venus in Libra offers many different experiences, pleasures, and creative inspiration for different people. The qualities of Venus operate where she is placed in your personal horoscope.

It’s important that you check your own transit chart for validation, because some people have signs close to the house cusp which can move it into the following house, or have Venus making significant aspects to outer natal planets

Aries rising or transiting Venus in the 7th house: Venus in Libra may be quintessentially social, but her condition in the 7th house also generates the need for self reflection and quiet appreciation. The sense of belonging is especially emphasised, and through the Venus mirror, loved ones reveal their finest qualities. The relationship stage is especially under the spotlight here, but it’s also about acknowledging and appreciating their own beauty, it’s a time for falling in love with themselves. All matters of business partnership present opportunity for wealth development.

Taurus rising or Venus transiting the 6th house: Work and maintaining the responsibilities of daily life become easier and harmonic. It’s possible to develop closer relationships with colleagues and find work especially enjoyable, especially for the social aspect. The energy for sacrifice is great, the person can burn themselves out trying to be all things to all people. Health matters come into focus, the individual can make or break their diet or health regime. It may be very difficult to resist sugar and lollies, the person can experience sugar highs and lows and extreme changes in mood. It can also emphasise health anxieties. Looking after themselves helps them feel better about themselves

Gemini rising: or Venus transiting the 5th house Personal amusement and pleasures becomes an insatiable urge, the individual may spend a lot of time cooking, eating out, spending money, having sex, and possibly think about children. There may be an opportunity for developing romance and satisfying romantic and sexual fantasies. Venus is comfortable here, maybe a little bit too comfortable. Her sultry side and seductive side is the star of the show. The ego celebrates its existence through creativity

Cancer rising or Venus in the 4th house: Home is a safe place where they return to a place of belonging. The appreciation for family members, especially the mother and sisters becomes especially enhanced, it’s a time when their mum can become their best friend. Family and domestic disputes can be resolved, because Aphrodite is so rattled by resentful energy. Instead of going out, the individual loves more than ever to be surrounded by friends and family in the home under the blankets and sharing stories between movies. The individual may spend a lot of money on the home decorating or re-designing

Leo rising or Venus in the 3rd house:  The communication is decorated in cupcake ice, so the verbal delivery can be more beautiful, harmonising, and attractive than ever. The sensory environment becomes exquisitely provocative, so the individual can be more responsive than ever to music, meaningful conversation, literature, or conflict. Social contact is important and the individual can be more talkative and engaged with friends. The person may spend quality time with siblings or resolve conflict between them. There may be nothing more pleasurable than spending the afternoon reading a book, magazine, or a blog

Virgo rising or Venus transiting the 2nd house: The sensory appreciation is enhanced here and there can be an increased urgency for affection, the protection of loved ones, and having somebody to provide for. It’s possible that the individual will spend a lot of money on their dependants and investments. Creative material can generate capital, and all matters of business partnership present opportunity for wealth development. It’s possible that the income will stabilise if it has been unreliable

Libra rising or Venus transiting the 1st house: After surrendering to loneliness and exile, social contact is emphasised and relationships validate their existence. The individual wants to be seen with their lover, somebody they are proud to be a part of. A beautiful appearance is in the mirror’s eye, the person can be more mindful on presenting a polished image and experimenting with personal style. If the individual is not in a relationship, Venus here can conduct a bee-to-honey performance where romantic interests emerge from their hiding place

Scorpio rising or Venus transiting the 12th house: Pleasures can be consumed in excess, alone, away from the eyes of company. This makes it possible for the individual to lose sight of how far they have gone. This could be any personal indulgence like eating, substance use, pursuing forbidden romance, or gambling. Venus is social, but here she is quiet, inactive, and dreamy. The streaks of melancholy can generate inspirational creativity. Old lovers can come out of the woodwork. If the person is in a relationship, the partner may become unwell or need to be looked after. Much of this time is likely spent alone with the partner, napping together. Personal income may become uncertain

Sagittarius rising or transiting Venus in the 11th house: Friends are the sweet sugar of life and there is no better time to appreciate the good qualities they bring to your life. The social calendar can be especially active right now. The individual may desire to join a group, charity, or an organisation. It’s possible that friendships or relationships can develop online, and the individual may enjoy sharing spiritual knowledge, astrology, or political revelations with friends or online circles. The personal style can become experimental

Capricorn rising or transiting Venus in the 10th house: Expect a warm response from the public. You are more socially radiant and desirable than ever. But do they see the real you? or are they blinded by the image they have and want of you? It’s important to decipher this possibility. You can charm yourself into that promotion you desire or impress superiors with your personal qualities. Venus here may also resolve conflict with parents or offer reward for all the hard work, maybe the individual finally has enough money to buy that object of material desire.

Aquarius rising or transiting Venus in the 9th house: You can enjoy yourself again without excess guilt or compulsive self destruction. The individual may think about traveling or even book a trip overseas. Long distance relationships can begin. Also the love of learning and matters of the spirit are enhanced, it means that playing with astrology can be really fun. If you study tertiary education, you may be more interested in the social events, parties, and being with your university friends than going to the lectures. This also means that group work assignments are easier, for once. Personal comment, I think we all know group assignments are the worst lol. Ok back to focusing. It’s also a good time for accessing the help you need from academics or expert advice from any professional like doctors or psychiatrists.

Pisces rising or transiting Venus in the 8th house: Deep desires and romantic longings reveal themselves as sexual desires, so the person can be drawn to close and intimate experiences. This isn’t really a comfortable place for Venus. It can activate her dark desires or obsessions. The course of current relationships will grow deeper and more intense, it’s time to the plunge and expose the parts of themselves they have feared to reveal before lovers. There can be physical urges and sensations without causation, powerful attractions to forbidden, complex, and mesmerising people. The person can be more secretive than usual.

I’ve been thinking and

it occurred to me, just now, right here, that the reason Granny and Vimes feel like such different characters even though they’re not, not really- both are old and angry (so, so, so angry) and understand that everyone’s “just” people and really, really would rather not be Good thank you very much, but they will do the job in front of them, because no-one else will- is that their books approach the idea of Responsibility from different angles:

Granny’s books* say ‘I am responsible. No-one else. I made this choice. I picked this job and now I am going to do it’ and then proceed to do just that. In every finale Granny stands, and wins, by herself.

On the other hand, Vimes tries this. He does, really. But whenever he tries to pick up the weight of the world someone runs up to help him. In every book when Vimes faces the villain, he prepares and goes in alone, but someone always follows him (Carrot in MaA, the  Patrician in Jingo, Angua in Thud!, etc.). And that pretty much takes the above ‘I am responsible’ and answers: ‘Yes, you are. But so are we’.

And I don’t know where exactly I was going with this but i guess it’s somewhere along the lines of how the Witches books deal with personal, individual responsibility, while the Watch books deal with person-as-a-member-of-society and societal in general responsibility.

(Also, like, proof that Granny is the single badest badass motherfucker in the series. No-one else reaches her feet)

*And later Tiffany’s. Because say what you will Tiffany is Granny, just with the edges slightly smoothed.

Toffee Returns / The Last Magic

From Star vs. the Forces of Evil - The Battle for Mewni (Toffee).

Spoiler: Moon, Marco, and Buff Frog have just been told that Star is dead. They have no reason to believe Toffee is wrong. So, for Moon, the individual responsible for killing her mom just killed her daughter too. And then she and Marco basically try to MURDER TOFFEE.

The tune starts out like Moon’s theme from previous episodes, but there was something about her theme that wasn’t sitting right in the scene, so after the first six notes I abandon it and start doing this major/minor back and forth thing. Moon is both the angriest and saddest she has ever been, so it felt right to have the music waver.

And then we jump to Star, who actually seems to be in a life or death situation, and makes one last attempt to save the last bit of magic, maybe in all of Mewni. And it apparently doesn’t turn out so great. Again, the melody after she dives starts out like Star’s theme, but it changes to something more dangerous at the end.

Taurus - Material Girl

Taurus is the sign of opulence, affluence, resources, and capital gain from creative enterprise. This is why the sign of Taurus and the 2nd house manages models, painters, creative writers, acrobats, musicians, architects, landscapers, and fashion design. Taurus is not the sole sign of the creator, there are many signs that express creativity. And they are all inspired by many different sources. For example there is Leo through ego demonstration, Cancer through emotional stimulus, Aquarius through the faculties of intellect and intuition, and Pisces through spiritual vision. Taurus is creative expression conducted through heightened senses, physical awareness, and beautification of the material plane. The opulence and wealth we initially associate with Taurus is also descriptive of the inner state and internal resources.

Taurus is the fixed quality of the earth signs. And nothing really sounds artistic about a realistic and skeptical earth sign with fixed stuck-in-the mud stubbornness. However, it’s through this door that a secret garden is revealed for Taurus. The body, mind, and spirit melts into the natural plane like milk and honey. The physical body is where nature reunites with soul, and the material world becomes their canvas. Taurus has always been fascinated by material. And we are not just talking about cars, designer clothes or diamonds. The material is delightful awareness of the physical body and reading it’s curves and arches like braille. The material is delicate petals, the cool kiss of the sea, fabric, the smell of the rain, silk, velvet, the taste of strawberries exploding natural candies in their mouths. It makes the individual highly responsive to sound, silence, and seasonal symphonies. Nature is the muse for the artist in Taurus. These people take notice of how the moon hangs in the sky, the songs that the birds sing, the temperature making subtle changes, and aromatic spices in the air. They are gifted with exclusive performances by nature. Flowers bloom just for them. They can make just about anything grow with their enchanted green thumb. Taurus has always been associated with farming, horticulture, and landscaping. Music is especially moving to Taurus, like they can sense the vibrations in air playing notes across their skin. It can change their mood and relax any tension. They have a good ear for sound, they are vitalised by using the vocal cords and releasing its energy into an outside medium. It’s possible that the individual sings, performs music, and uses the creative Taurus mind to song write. There’s not many Taureans that don’t secretly love singing, even the tone-deaf, conservative, and bull headed ones. Some Taureans sing on a stage, and others sing in the shower. Mostly they will hum tunes or whistle as they work.

Taurus can be especially good at making other people’s body’s feel sumptuous, nourished, and gratified through touch. Touch is the way that Taurus feels, learns, and understands their world. They can make brilliant masseuses, physical therapists, stylists, make up artists, hairdressers, occupational therapists, and mind-body therapists. And they do it with loving and magnetic touch, almost like creamy silk is gliding from their fingertips. The body is a physical temple, and Taurus has inherited the reproductive creativity of Mother Earth. Talents are nurtured in the same way that seeds are patiently tendered to until the bouquet shoots and blooms. Mother Earth has bonded to Taurus because of their intimacy with her every mineral and mosaic, and Taurus exalts in mother moon so feminine creativity finds a home in Taurus. Venus is the ruler of Taurus and she governs relationship, beauty, and luxury. Libra is the sister child of Venus and Libra directs human relationships. Taurus is nocturnal Venus and she facilitates relationship between body, spirit, and sun, moon, and natural earth. All of the physical, emotional, and spiritual experiences that Taurus has ever lived through remain in the body and when they move, dance, display intimacy, paint, or write, these memories become colour and creativity. It isn’t just Aphrodite that produces Taurus artistry. There are multiple elements in Taurus that inspire the creator. Valcun was the God of Taurus and he was anointed as he designed the harps and instruments for the Gods and angels. Taurus continues to participate in these offerings. Every time they create, design, or enrich the material plane they are having a ceremony with heaven.

Maybe you are being taken advantage of, maybe the activity you are engaged in is tedious, maybe someone close to you is dishonest, irritating, or unconscious, but all this is irrelevant. Whether your thoughts and emotions about this situation are justified or not makes no difference. The fact is that you are resisting what is. You are making the present moment into an enemy. You are creating unhappiness, conflict between the inner and the outer. Your unhappiness is polluting not only your own inner being and those around you but also the collective human psyche of which you are an inseparable part. The pollution of the planet is only an outward reflection of an inner psychic pollution: millions of unconscious individuals not taking responsibility for their inner space.

Either stop doing what you are doing, speak to the person concerned and express fully what you feel, or drop the negativity that your mind has created around the situation and that serves no purpose whatsoever except to strengthen a false sense of self. Recognizing its futility is important. Negativity is never the optimum way of dealing with any situation. In fact, in most cases it keeps you stuck in it, blocking real change. Anything that is done with negative energy will become contaminated by it and in time give rise to more pain, more unhappiness. Furthermore, any negative inner state is contagious: Unhappiness spreads more easily than a physical disease. Through the law of resonance, it triggers and feeds latent negativity in others, unless they are immune — that is, highly conscious.
—  Eckhart Tolle
To accuse others for one’s own misfortunes is a sign of want of education. To accuse oneself shows that one’s education has begun. To accuse neither oneself nor others shows that one’s education is complete.
—

Epictetus (~50 CE - 135 CE) a stoic philosopher.

He taught that philosophy is a way of life and not just a theoretical discipline. To Epictetus, all external events are beyond our control; we should accept calmly and dispassionately whatever happens. However, individuals are responsible for their own actions, which they can examine and control through rigorous self-discipline.

A relationship consists of two individuals responsible for the safekeeping of one another. Love in its purest form requires a shared mindset by those who care enough to ask, ‘What are we willing to do for us?’ The answer, whether a Sunday morning or a Thursday’s noon, must always be, ‘Whatever it takes.’
—  J. Wesley

A lot of misconceptions about what is and is not a result of capitalism exist because economists like Adam Smith have presented the system as a natural state of affairs in which the ‘invisible hand of the market’ controls everything.

Obviously the ‘invisible hand’ is based around the actions of individuals in a market, but ‘the market’ as a whole is often referenced as a reason for decision making. Price gouging occurs? It’s the market. Oil prices go up? It’s the market.

By pushing the idea that people act in accordance to ‘the market’ rather than the profit motive, it’s easy to avoid criticizing companies or individuals responsible for destructive or otherwise harmful decision making. It implies that these decisions are inevitable and have to happen to stabilize the market—which is obviously inherently very unstable. Then when the market does fail, actions are again, often not attributed to people, but to the economy as a whole having its bumps and turns.

This chaos has been attempted to be curbed, but we now ultimately go through a cycle of watered down reform failing, being taken away, failing, and being implemented again…etc. That’s because these reforms and regulations don’t identify capitalism as the source of the problem, they just try and put a bandaid on what is inherent to its functioning.

Then we get the whole ‘crony capitalism’ or ‘corporatism’ false explanation for actions resulting from the profit motive, which is, again, a way of presenting markets as a natural state of affairs that have merely been manipulated to work against people’s interests. Except it’s people, under capitalism, motivated by profit, making these decisions. They are not a separate entity or more corruptable than anyone else. They’re doing what the system encourages as a means of success.

So in order to help people understand why and how capitalism works the way it does, we have to look at its core incentives and structure. Not just capitalism in practice, but in theory.

Characteristics of a Healthy Relationship

For those of us who have been emotionally abused/neglected, we may not know what a healthy relationship looks or feels like. It was our parents’ job to model healthy relationships, but if they did not treat us (or each other) well, our concept of relationships becomes what we have seen or experienced. We end up in a pattern of getting into relationships that remind us or are a mirror to what we’ve experienced in the past–with its pain and toxicity. It’ll take us time to really know healthy relationships as they should be, but here is a good place to start: address your current relationships to see if they are meeting the below criteria. Address and re-assess

(Note: this is by no means an exhausted list, but instead, a starting point for you to explore your relationships. Also, ask yourself specifically, what do I need in a relationship? There may be some things others don’t value as strongly, but are very important to you. Acknowledge that you have every right to need what you need in a relationship).

1. Mutual respect. Does the person accept you for who you are? Does the person appreciate your individuality and the right to make your own choices? Does the person acknowledge the right to your own thoughts and feelings? Are you able to do the same?

2. Trust. Do you feel safe with the person, physically and psychologically? Is the person someone who you can depend on?

3. Honesty. Does the person keep to their word? Does the person show consistency with their words and actions? Does the person communicate their thoughts and feelings openly with you? Conversely, are you able to communicate openly with them?

4. Interdependence. Do both the person and you have your own lives, as well as take individual responsibility for yourselves? Do you mutually communicate your own needs to one another, while maintaining respect for the other person’s limits and boundaries? Is there a sense in your relationship that you are sharing your lives with one another, as opposed to overly depending on the other person to fill your every desire and need?

5. Communication. Do you and the person communicate your thoughts and feelings with one another? Does the person strive to actively listen to you, both in good times and in bad? Is the person able to acknowledge your perspective, even if there is disagreement? Is there a mutual agreement to work through conflicts openly and respectfully? Do you do the same for the other person? Remember, communication takes two–speaking AND listening. It is helpful to look at yourself and ask if you are struggling to do some of these things, so you know what you can work on.

6. Realistic Expectations. Does the person realize it is not your job to meet all of their needs and expectations? Does the person understand you are human and thus prone to occasional mistakes, and that is okay? Does the person love and accept you as you are, everything that you are… knowing that you are not perfect? Are you able to do the same?

If the person you have in mind is showing potential red flags, you have every right to adjust the person’s level of involvement in your life (i.e., close friend vs. an acquaintance), or to even cut them out completely. This is your life. It is completely up to you who to have in your inner circle.

Transiting Venus in Virgo - September 19, 2017 - October 14, 2017

When transiting Venus moves into Virgo the heart becomes thoughtful and begins beating on behalf of others. The previous few months of self pleasure and indulgence shift into deep concern for other people and supporting friends and partners. If there is something around the home that needs fixing, or re organising, or sorting out, it provides a certain sense of contentment, the smell of a fresh and open home is soothing and helps us relax. It’s also satisfying to self care and detox, take long and cleansing showers, cook fresh and nutritious food, do yoghurt face masks, and take probiotics. Health and physical comfort becomes a concern that seems worthwhile restoring because a sense of wellbeing is important. Only when we are well can we give everything possible to others.

Aries rising - Maintaining the simple security measures and responsibilities becomes a gentle bliss, the individual may become more focused on finances and their material longevity and feel satisfied working hard to accumulate heart’s desire. Congenial social conduct can generate a beneficial business partnership

Taurus rising - There can be a heightened pressure to speak and initiate social  contact, it can become easier to speak to others and exchange information. The individual may spark an amorous and delightful relationship with her engaging conversation. It’s a good period to study and learn because it comes with ease, the individual may relish in simply sitting back and reading a book or blog

Gemini rising - The home and family become the pillars of pleasure, there may be regular family gatherings and the opportunity for time at home to enjoy the company of family. The individual may add to their book collection and get in contact with family members who have been absent from their life. They may re-decorate the home and find more pleasure in staying comforted with loved ones at home than going out

Cancer rising - Indulging in creature comforts and pleasures becomes an insatiable urge, the individual may spend a lot of time cooking, eating a lot, spending a lot, and think about having children. There may be an opportunity for developing romance and fulfilling a romantic fantasy

Leo rising - Work and maintaining the responsibilities of daily life become easier and somewhat emotionally relieving. The individual may develop a closer relationship with colleagues and especially enjoy their work. The energy for sacrifice is great, the person can burn themselves out trying to be all things to all people

Virgo rising - There may be a lot of time spent in self reflection and appreciating the contacts, friendships, and relationships they have in life. The individual may be willing to make a long term commitment and enjoys the feeling of being accepted. The longing for romance may be emphasised right now, the individual may be more willing than ever to put themselves out there

Libra rising - Deep and powerful urges reveal themselves as desires, largely sexual, so the person can be drawn to close and intimate experiences. If they are in a relationship they may be ready to take the plunge and expose parts of themselves they have feared to do so before. There can be physical urges and sensations without causation, powerful attractions to dark, complex, and mesmerising people. The person can be more secretive and cautious than normal

Scorpio rising - Relationships can settle and take on a more light, explorative, and free expression. The individual may indulge in study and absolutely delight in learning and discovering deep, meaningful, and applicable wisdom. There may be an attraction to teachers or philosophical types, and the individual may be guided by a mentor

Sagittarius rising - It can be like the public has instantly warmed to them, they can be frequently helped by strangers, receive charity, talk or charm their way into a promotion, or find themselves instantly liked socially and professionally without really trying. The individual can build meaningful work relationships and may resolve some parental disputes

Capricorn rising - Friends become the sweet sugar of life and the social calendar can call them out more than ever. The individual may become more responsive to global events and needs of the people around them. It becomes important to let friends know they are appreciated and always supported. Long term relationships may develop from friendship

Aquarius rising - The individual may indulge in creature comforts or pleasures in their own privacy, self soothing in a safe place where nobody sees. The person may keep destructive thoughts to themselves and seclude themselves when they feel most cut off. Relationships become very seclusive and almost like a world has been created just for the two of them

Pisces rising - It is important for the individual to maintain contact with people and let them know that they exist. Appearances can be emphasised and the person may become very expressive and experimental with their personal style, dress, and make up. This can be like a bee-to-honey experience where prospective lovers all come out of hiding at once

DISCLAIMER: Liespotting can be a bit imprecise. This post is based on research that scientists have gathered about how to tell if someone is being dishonest. PLEASE take this with a grain of salt, as even scientists tend to disagree on the signs at times. I tried to take the most agreed upon signs and analyze the first 1 minute and 30 seconds of the Cambridge Q&A.

Okay let’s begin.

1) FIND THE BASELINE

Before you can tell if someone’s lying, you need to know how they usually behave/tell the story. People usually deviate from their baseline behavior/story when they say something fishy. The baseline for us is Jan 31st when Moffat talks about season 4&5.

January 31st, 2014 on planning season 4&5:

MOFFAT:  Yes, we do.  It’s really [Season] 4 that we’ve got, but it throws forward to a terrifying [Season] 5.  It wasn’t a planned thing.  We had just got out of the rain and because we don’t have the lovely big trailers that Benedict and Martin have, we had to go sit in the accountancy department and we just talked about what we could do.  We just started having what I think are the best (set) of ideas we’ve ever had.  I think (they)’re just wild.  And when I say ideas, it’s what stories we’ll tackle, what big twists there will be, what gut punches there will be, and what surprises there will be, and I think it’s really exciting.

This behavior then deviates at the Cambridge Q&A on January 20th, 2017:

Steven: Um, we-ahk- we’re not lying. We- we don’t know! We haven’t even sat down and, uh, uh, done any complicated graphs or sums yet. Uh, so, we really, really don’t know.
Mark: We are sitting down now.

Steven originally says that they have planned season 4 and how it relates to the storyline of season 5. Then, Steven takes it back and says they haven’t even really thought about it. Then, Mark and Steven even discredit each other by saying that they haven’t sat down and are currently sitting down to discuss it.

(Thanks to @worriesconstantly for the quotes!)

2) Non-verbal Cues

Fibs make you fidgety. Liars will scratch their noses, rub their necks, pick imaginary lint from their shirts

or repeatedly shift their position.

position 1 (steven’s legs crossed towards mark, both of marks legs on the ground)

position 2 (both of steven’s legs on the ground, mark’s legs crossed towards steven)

position 3 (both have crossed their legs towards each other)

position 4 (back to the original position) …all in under a minute

Liars may also maintain eye contact too well or consistently look away.

This is a very difficult thing to actually pinpoint. In my opinion, Moffat maintains too much eye contact while discussing season 5, Gatiss looks away far too often. I’ll leave this one up to your judgement.

Liars also wring their hands due to feelings of guilt.

and maintain closed off body language.

(mark’s crossed legs, steven’s hand covering his face, mark’s hands over his crotch, both of their palms are facing down, their bodies are facing each other rather than the interviewer)

Mark seems to be the worse liar in this case. When Steven starts to talk about not knowing anything about season 5, he immediately braces himself and death grips the armchair (better seen in video). Then, strokes his leg from thigh to knee with his palm down which signifies discomfort.

3) TOO MUCH DETAIL and QUALIFIERS

Lies make us chatty. A liar may talk a lot to win you over, but most of those extra sentences are fluff.

See: the immediate evasion by talking about Dr. Who; the repetition of “we don’t know” (also seen as removal of individual responsibility), “who knows”, etc; and then the quick subject change to casting martin and ben despite no one asking them.

AKA They evade the question by adding a lot of details that don’t matter.

MOFFAT: But what you have to do is put out huge amounts of disinformation to try to bury all the secrets

Phrases like “The truth is” or “To be honest” can mean that even if they aren’t lying to you now, they were earlier.

see 1:15-1:17 of the video where they both say “honestly” right after one another despite NO ONE contradicting or fighting them.

4) Finally, there is the Moffat admitting to his tendency to lie

Moffat: “In fairness, I say I’m going to lie, then I lie, and people still get mad at me” (Comic Con 2016 Panel)

——————————————————————————————-

Individually, these signs may mean nothing.

All of these signs in under 1:30? Plus their tendency to lie about the show?

I think it’s safe to say that something is UP.

Transiting Venus in Virgo

September 19-October 14, 2017

Capricorn Risings 🏔

Capricorn Risings seem to walk around wearing hand-tailored suits. They present themselves resolutely and soberly.

Saturn’s blessings here produce a responsible individual that portrays their individuality through earthly images of stability and security. They’re solid and concrete and actively question everything around them looking for these characteristics in all things, so they’re not very much prone to sudden bursts of fiery excitement. Like a mountain rising quietly between heavy clouds, their presence is solemn, respectful and impactful. They walk generally in a straight line, with a constant rhythm on their heavy feet, close to earth. We can clearly tell they’ve got everything under control.

These people rarely let themselves be affected by external emotional manifestations, as if their body is surrounded by an impenetrable stone barrier. They’ve got clear objectives and ambitions, and this sturdy composition helps them make their way through every challenge and obstacle. They live for this conquest and they’re all about the path they must find to get there. Capricorn Rising’s are usually more mature than others around them and, being children of the lord of time, Saturn’s positioning and conditions is what greatly affects this Ascendant’s characteristics.

Those with Capricorn on the Ascendant may also show a strong and resistant body with remarkable facial traits, for Saturn rules bone structures.

Below, we’ll give only an introductory description of how Saturn manifests in the houses. Because of this planet’s complexity, the descriptions we’ll provide are only superficial. We advise further studies of the chart for “total” understanding of this planet’s position.

Saturn/1st house: on an open battlefield, two armies fight for an old and imposing tower standing at the center; it rains heavily. Being an individual means building one’s own personal value. The identity must be built with strong materials. If Saturn’s in Capricorn, recognition comes through one’s career or professional achievements. If Saturn’s in Aquarius, building an identity comes through one’s ideas and relationship with large groups of people. There’s the need to develop security in one’s self and in one’s existence. Knowing one’s self takes time.

Saturn/2nd house: through its windows, an elegant marble warehouse overflows with vegetables, fruits, leaves, plants and bottles of wine. Maturity comes through one’s developing ability to administer and to organize one’s money and possessions. Dealing responsibly with material matters take time. This is someone who values money and social honour as rewards of hard-work. A stable base come’s through material security.

Saturn/3rd house: an enormous ship fluctuates at the center of a storm; ocean waves rise and crush in the dark without mercy, but the vessel won’t sink. Communicating, producing phrases and being effectively understood takes time and maturity. There’s a need to develop form and structure in one’s ability to communicate, for one’s intense sensitivity typically produces interference in the realm of thoughts. This is someone who will develop maturity the more they interact with other people, specially relatives.

Saturn/4th house: a beautiful summer palace finally rises under the sun, between green fields and small lakes; at last, everything’s getting ready for the noble family’s return. Being recognized by the family is of most importance. Responsibilities and duties are completed to ultimately bring honour to close relatives. Dealing healthily with one’s psychological nature and family structure takes time.

Saturn/5th house: a forgotten imperial palace is restored and opened as a grand history museum; the gardens are preserved as if by magic. The challenge here is to recognize one’s own value, deep meaning and talents. Expressing beautifully one’s own identity through creativity takes time. Artistic careers are favoured later in life. Matters regarding children, games and romance are treated rather seriously.

Saturn/6th house: an old but imposing hospital is the only source of light surrounded by impenetrable darkness. This is someone with a structured routine that portrays themselves as very interested in other’s health conditions and daily habits. There’s the need to develop care with one’s own body and health as well as to learn that not everything ought to achieve one’s perfection standards.

Saturn/7th house: the gardens of an old rich family are reopened as public botanical gardens; fountains gleam under the gentle sunlight. Great sense of responsibility for other people’s well being. One’s identity is linked to their ability to be faithful and loving in their longtime relationships and friendships. Partnerships are solid, serious and formal. There’s the need to develop security in one’s true identity. Marriage may be delayed but stable.

Saturn/8th house: a majestic fortress is surrounded by enormous walls decorated by ivy; no one can see what’s happening inside. Portraits of security and confidence of one’s self, even though, inside, the individual deals daily with all-consuming emotions. Honour and loyalty. This Saturn’s famous for occupying important posts and social positions, mostly dealing with other people’s resources and possessions.

Saturn/9th house: an archaic temple is found at the depths of an ancient city; old words and truths are rediscovered. There may be some difficulty regarding subjects related to religion, sensitivity and ideals. However, utilizing logic and the rational mind is highly favoured. This Saturn’s very disciplined. There’s the need to develop a sincere and solid base for one’s knowledge.

Saturn/10th house: the whole royal palace’s been decorated for the marriage cerimonies; people from all around the world climb up the stairs and into the ball. Polite, beautiful and elegant. Diplomacy is a key characteristic for this Saturn. This is someone who excels at being fair and polite, specially in social situations, being able to dissolve all conflicts. Long-time partnerships are developed in the working realm. This Saturn loves being where he is and is blessing this individual with stability in one’s career, although this can take some time, work and maturity.

Saturn/11th house: built on stone, an old bank stands among taller skyscrapers; it is the richest and most trustworthy institution around. Fantastic apparent ability to observe and extract truth, secrets and details from other people’s lives. Information is analyzed and stored for future use, if needed. This is someone who seems to be able to finally give structure and reasoning to the complexities of the dynamics of groups of people. But, because big groups usually operate through superficiality, this deep and intense individual can find some difficulty in being accepted or finding the ideal group.

Saturn/12th house: a beautiful and isolated cathedral prays by the edges of a cliff; the sea crushes dearly against the structure’s dissolving walls. Projecting one’s identity in the physical world can prove difficult, for Saturn’s structure is being diluted. There’s the need to develop balance and wisdom, projecting one’s identity with ideals and concepts instead. An abstract and sensitive challenge, one could say. Accepting one’s subjectivity and finding one’s own path takes time.

Thank you dearly for reading! I’m hoping it helps.

Gravitational Waves Win 2017 Nobel Prize In Physics, The Ultimate Fusion Of Theory And Experiment

“The 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics may have gone to three individuals who made an outstanding contribution to the scientific enterprise, but it’s a story about so much more than that. It’s about all the men and women over more than 100 years who’ve contributed, theoretically and experimentally and observationally, to our understanding of the precise workings of the Universe. Science is much more than a method; it’s the accumulated knowledge of the entire human enterprise, gathered and synthesized together for the betterment of everyone. While the most prestigious award has now gone to gravitational waves, the science of this phenomenon is only in its earliest stages. The best is yet to come.”

It’s official at long last: the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to three individuals most responsible for the development and eventual direct detection of gravitational waves. Congratulations to Rainer Weiss, Kip Thorne, and Barry Barish, whose respective contributions to the experimental setup of gravitational wave detectors, theoretical predictions about which astrophysical events produce which signals, and the design-and-building of the modern LIGO interferometers helped make it all possible. The story of directly detecting gravitational waves is so much more, however, than the story of just these three individuals, or even than the story of their collaborators. Instead, it’s the ultimate culmination of a century of theoretical, experimental, and instrumentational work, dating back to Einstein himself. It’s a story that includes physics titans Howard Robertson, Richard Feynman, and Joseph Weber. It includes Russell Hulse and Joseph Taylor, who won a Nobel decades earlier for the indirect detection of gravitational waves. And it’s the story of over 1,000 men and women who contributed to LIGO and VIRGO, bringing us into the era of gravitational wave astronomy.

The 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics may only go to three individuals, but it’s the ultimate fusion of theory and experiment. And yes, the best is yet to come!
