USSR (now LITHUANIA). Vilnius. January 16, 1991. Pall-bearers carry a flag-draped casket during a funeral procession through the Lithuanian capital, for 10 of the 13 people killed when Soviet troops stormed the Lithuanian broadcast centre the previous weekend. Hundreds of thousands of Lithuanians jammed the procession route to mourn their national heroes. The January Events are credited as being the principal factors that led to the sweeping victory of independence supporters in a referendum on February 9, 1991. (84.73% of registered voters cast their ballot, 90.47% of them voted in favour of the total independence of Lithuania.)
We’re saddened by the loss of artist Malick Sidibé, a chronicler of life in post-independence Mali. His photograph Look at Me! is on view now on the fourth floor as part of From the Collection: 1960–1969.
