incredible shots

Sleepover is an incredibly moving, beautifully shot and painfully told story of love. Hayley Kiyoko always DELIVERS such accurate LGBTQ+ representation and I’m so fucking grateful! When you’re in that situation of “I just want to be with them so bad” but the feeling isn’t mutual , you can feel so isolated and heartbroken. What I love about Hayley is she always makes sure to remind us that we are NOT ALONE. Our feelings matter, they aren’t predatory and we will find a way to make it through. THIS is the representation that I needed when I was figuring out my sexuality and I’m so glad the young queer kids of today have it too. Thank you for all you do Queen @hayleykiyoko

This incredible shot of a rainbow that formed in the spray of a waterfall was captured by a young photographer, Justin Lee. The picture was taken in California’s Yosemite National Park.

Jack I'm loving the music you're leaving links to, are there any other similar albums or songs you enjoy listening to? Would love to check those out as well :)

Ok so i’ve been OBSESSED with Kendrick Lamar’s new album since it came out and I know Hip Hop or Rap isn’t everyone’s cup of tea and this song isn’t even the best on the album (DNA is insane) but this music video alone is worth watching regardless because it’s incredibly well shot with some fantastic cinematography:

So let’s talk about Sasha’s climactic scene

And why the Attack on Titan anime adaptation once again proves itself to be incredible.

Sasha reading her bow and telling the kid to keep going is an amazing moment in the manga already–Isa deserves all the credit here. In the og flashback, Sasha refuses to abandon her principles just because outsiders are in trouble, she refuses to help them; a perhaps egocentric, but also human point of view-we tend to prioritize us and those closest to us over strangers. Then, in the current time, Sasha tells the kid to run bc she’ll certainly find kind and helpful people ahead; and stays herself behind to fight; she fights knowing that proper victory cannot be achieved, to save a random stranger; a kid, further emphasising that Sasha herself has grown into a great person and abandoned that egocentric child she once was.

It’s great stuff, but the animated execution of it made me realize just how good it actually is.

In the yumikuri flashback the S1 version of counterattack mankind starts…its positive a track expressing a sense of optimism and peace, it suits the “ordinary moments” she thinks about. Then, we cut back to present time. A newer arrangement of the track, led by faint strings with hints of an organ in the background–there’s a distant but growing intensity in there.

As Sasha talks to the kid, most of it is shot from the kid’s perspective, so we get to look up to Sasha–she’s seen as the grown up here, perfectly fitting the above characterization. In the meantime, the music grows ever stronger-the organ is very present, and drums are added too. The buildup to the sequence is thus heavily emphasized. Also, listen carefully to Kobayshi Yuu (who’s performance here I loved). There’s definitely exasperation in her voice–they’ve been running for some time and are chased by a titan, not to mention that she’s afraid. Yet, you can still find a lot of tenderness in there–the kid is supposed to feel safe and secure, despite everything going on, and it just makes you love Sasha even more.

Let’s get to the real meat

I LOOOOVE this scene. Sasha spinning on her feet to stop and get into position looks really cool…but its’ the following take that I adore the most

The spin kills her entire momentum…she stands still and ready, and the camera lingers on her. But the kid didn’t do any spin, kid’s still going, not slowing down. Sasha however wants kid to keep going, seems to use her spin as a way to propel kid forward. And the moment her arm is separated from kid, the camera moves on as well–doing so, Sasha’s staying-behind-to-fight is visually translated and further emphasized without the viewer consciously realizing it. I have a hard time describing it, but there’s an incredibly powerful sense of organic dynamism in there that just sells the scene. It’s excellent visual storytelling, not only of the situation, but also of Sasha’s character–she’s strong and altruistic now, and she’ll fight against all odds to save the kid in need. Yuu’s performance here is perfect as well–there’s now definitive desperation to be heard, alongside remaining hints of kindness but also a certain intensity. Sasha is afraid–she has no equipment to protect herself, she has no weapons to eliminate the threat, but in spite of that, she still sends the kid away, she still stays behind, she still stands in the way of the titan.

And THAT shows just how brave she is–Sasha overcomes her weaknesses, she fights against all odds, she dedicates her heart–and that is what the anime manages to portray so masterfully here.

And of course, that is what the best shot of the episode does.

We get an incredibly gorgeous wide shot…starting off once again from below, keeping both the titan and Sasha in frame, reminding us of the threat ahead of her, but in one amazing panning zoom, we fly all the way to a closeup filled with nothing but fierceness. The visual alone is amazing in its own regard, but the sound is what truly rounds it up. Counterattack Mankind A reaches its climax, going all out on instruments, cue-ing the all-so-familiar melody in an immensely epic arrangement worthy of the scene it accompanies. Kobayashi Yuu 100% sells it too–her first “now-go” is still a bit feeble and unsure as mentioned above, the 2nd “run” already stronger but there are still hints of fear….and then, with the musical cue behind, after getting a full frontal close-up–the all out “get runnin’!”, filled with nothing but raw energy and determination–Sasha’s abandoned all fear and is in all out character-climax-badass mode. Her shout echoes through the woods, the kid is literally hit by a shockwave and finally starts running (sidenote–her eyes were dark and lifeless throughout the ep, but only after that do they lighten up, adding once more weight to Sasha’s moment). And of course, Sasha’s accent arc comes to full circle in the same frame as well, as she yells the command out in her native dialect she’s tried to hide for so long. Pretty much everything that could’ve come full circle did–in terms of writing, performance, sound and visuals.

It’s an amazing sequence deserving of ludicrous praise for the creative staff–they’ve proven once more that Attack on Titan is a work of art. The manga is already without a doubt amazing–most of the points above stem from it after all-but the anime is so ridiculously good at presenting I sometimes can’t believe it with my own two eyes.

In case you couldn’t tell, I fucking loved this sequence and I’m gonna yell about Sasha all week long.

anonymous asked:

That shot is incredible ! Would you perhaps consider showing us part of your process ? I just assumed you used 3D for the camera movement, it's amazing.

I shall present thou my process, but consider that it ‘ll be the exact same process as any other animation, it’s basicly like “i did a rough and a tie down, and i cleaned it”.

I assume that by asking this, thou wanted to know some “ways” of doing this kind of thing, but sadly i didn’t use any tricks, and i could have of course, but i just felt that if i was trying to find a way to avoid doing it, i would just not be doing it, and the rsult would have not been the one i wanted.

So in order to make this process as interesting as it could possibly be, i’ll try to explain my thought during each steps as much as i can.

So here is the rough, basicly if i recall correctly this was like my third version (i didn’t find the other one) i tried to have here “key moments” and not exactly “key movements”, i tried to define the most importants parts of the curve my camera’s describing. The thing is, i wanted to be sure where to slow down the pacing of my camera, and when to speed it up, and at the same time i wanted to know what the crowd would looks like.

Here’s my kind of tie down, it’s the thing i used in order to do the cleaning later, here, i juste came back to re-define a little better the last part, the fast parts are easier to read and i know where my characters are.
Something i also did (and lost by now so i can’t show it) is like a top view map of the crowd, with each character to always help me remember where each one is.

Note that i cleaned and colored the “ghost” first here, as he’s hiding characters, i wanted to know exactly where he would be to avoid unecessary drawings.

And here whe have the final cleaning, here is the part i’ll need to explain the most, because sadly there’s no real “inbetween” before this part and the tie down.

The first thing i did was to clean all the images i already had during the tie down, then i got all the models checked with the character designers Lady Hagdahl Sörebo and Lady Zhang to be absolutly sure that the things i would be inbeetwining would be the exact models  (i thought lady Hagdahl Sörebo was going to die during that part).
The thing i did at the same time was to define the size of the brush during each “key moments”, you may notice on the gif above that the further away the characters are, the thinner their line is.This is one of the thing that helps achieving this “3D like” aspect, it helps feeling depht in each frames and makes your eyes’s understanding of each characters easier.

Once i had my key movements perfectly lined, i started beaking it down, i inbetweened all the images i had, BUT i started to think about each characters’s movement, you may notice it , but the characters are not all totally still, some of them are moving, doing something, for exemple, the xingtiang (the ball-like things with arms who carrys bowl of food) wave their arms and bowl a little as they can’t exactly sustain their weight perfectly.
It’s that part that helped creating life in that shot, if the characters had been just standing still, the shot would have felt flat, and a bit life-less.

Once i had all my characters on models, my lines’s size defined, and my characters animation set in stone, i just had to inbetween everything to reach a ratio of 25 frames/1 second, it’s what we call a 1′s exposition in french, i don’t know how to say it in english, but the important part is that it helps your eyes understanding the movement, and in a shot with so many characters, and a movement as fast as this one, it was absolutly necessary to have everything at one, it’s also one of the thing that helps achieving this 3D effect, as we tend to see most of our 2D animation at 2 or 3 and our 3D animation at 1 (or 0.5)

And we’re nearly finished! after that i just colorised the characters, once they were, i was sure of the negative space around them, and were to put the confettis you see on the ground, it’s an other thing that helps defining depth in the shot, a solid ground under the feets of the characters.

And of course once i had everything in place i just had to add the flying confettis! I animated them straight ahead, as i already had my camera movement and my characters it was child’s play to guess the size, the orientation and everything else; it’s like animating in 2D on a 3D scene, thou know exactly where thou are, but it doesn’t have the cons 3D scene have, the space isn’t so big you get lost in it, thou know exactly what’s on screen, and it doesn’t feel dead.

I wanted them to flow through in order to lead the eyes of the audience and to make the whole movement flow more fluently, this way thou don’t look too much at all the characters and thou don’t get lost in the details, because thy eyes are attracted by the colored and bright moving dots through the image.

And that’s it!
An other intersting thing about this shot is that i cuted it in 3 parts in order to simplify the tvpaint file.
It means this process only cover this part, which is the second one, the others weren’t exactly done the same way, but the process was more interesting for this part, that’s why i didn’t added the others.

Hope it’ll help thou in thy journey.

Lance had been cranky the last few weeks. On it’s own that wasn’t too unusual, Lance got cranky about the weirdest things.
About running out of the good face masks and having to use different ones that Allura gave him. About the mice not being in the mood to play with him when he wanted. About getting too little sleep. About getting too much sleep. About an alien he’d never seen before and never would again rejecting his embarrassing advances.
But usually his mood brightened again as quickly as it had soured and this lasting slump was starting to worry them.

Keith wasn’t the first who’d noticed it, he hardly ever was when it came to these things. But after Hunk had addressed Lance’s recent attitude and he’d started to pay attention, the signs couldn’t be ignored anymore.
Usually Lance chattered endlessly during their meals and meetings, now he hardly ever said a word, leaving the group as soon as he could where he’d despised being alone for long periods before.
He seemed tense during training sessions, focused but way too stubborn to really make anything out of it, the slightest mistake throwing him off for the whole day. Keith had caught him more than once on the training deck, using it late into the night, expression hardened and determined.

Whenever Hunk or Shiro or, lately, even Allura tried to talk to him he’d put on a cheery mask and pretend everything was fine before retreating to the shooting range to utterly destroy every target the ship gave him.
Keith didn’t know what to do, didn’t know how to reach Lance if not even their most empathetic team members could. He hadn’t felt this helpless since he heard the reports about the Kerberos mission failing.
Until the afternoon he was paired up with Lance for hand to hand combat training.

“That’s – okay, that’s enough”, Lance spat, squirming helplessly where Keith had him pinned, one hand tapping a fluttery rhythm against the floor. “I yield! Fuck, I yield!”
Keith furrowed his brows, not used to the other boy giving in this easily, but he still stepped back, offering Lance a hand to help him get up.
Lance scoffed and slapped the hand away, pushing himself upright. Frown deepening Keith watched him.

“You okay?”, he asked, wiping sweat from his forehead. They’d been sparring for a while already. Where Lance had been almost tenacious in the beginning the fire in his eyes had subsided with every failed try to overpower Keith, every time it was him tapping the mat instead.
Now he leveled Keith with an icy glare but instead of getting back into stance he turned away.
“Leave me alone”, he mumbled before he left the training deck.

Shiro perked up from where he was pinning Hunk against the floor, the yellow paladin about to twist free from the hold and counter it when he also noticed Lance’s retreat.
Allura stepped forward, hands on her hips as she called after him: “Lance! Lance, we’re not done, where do you think you’re…”
“It’s okay!”, Hunk called, having used the distraction to free himself and scramble to his feet. “It’s okay, I’ll go get him!”

“No”, Keith said, body moving before he could even think about it. “I’ll go, I’ll talk to him…” He could feel their eyes on him, skeptical and unsure. Could hear the breath Hunk took, the careful “Um, Keith buddy…”
But he just shook his head, going for the doors.
“I got this.”

As expected he found Lance in his room, already changed halfway out of his armor, the leg pieces still clinging to his body.
“I told you to leave me alone”, Lance mumbled, no emotion to be heard in his voice, but Keith still stepped further into the room, arms crossed and face determined.
“Yeah”, he answered, taking a look at the helmet and armor pieces Lance had put on the table for now. “But I wanna know what your deal is. You’ve been … weird.”
Lance huffed a dry laugh and shook his head.
“I’ve been…? No. Nothing. No deal, everything’s just … peachy.”

“Bullshit.” Keith shook his head. “You can tell Hunk and Shiro that. Because they want to … respect your privacy or whatever. But something’s wrong. I wanna know what.”
Lance groaned, throwing another armor piece onto the table.
“What, so you can feel even better about yourself? Just go away!”
Keith huffed and leaned a hip against the desk, trying to catch Lance’s gaze but the blue paladin already turned away from him again.

“Listen”, he began, not quite sure where this would lead but just going with it for now. “Just because you can’t beat me at hand to hand doesn’t mean…”
“Hand to hand? What can I beat you at then?”, Lance spat, whirling around to finally meet Keith’s gaze and there it was again, that fire he’d seen at the beginning of the training session. “You’re the amazing pilot, the martial arts expert, the brave one everybody loves and wants to be like! What else is there, what else … what else can I contribute?”
Keith frowned.

“You … you want to be like me?”
“Oh piss off!”, Lance cursed, turning away again with an exasperated huff. Slowly but surely Keith began to suspect he really wasn’t the right one for this job, that he was only making worse. Maybe he should retreat and send one of the others instead, to settle what he’d done wrong.
“I’m … I’m not good at this”, he began, already setting up to excuse himself when he had an idea. “At uh … talking to people. When they’re upset.”
“Oh really…” Lance’s voice was dripping with sarcasm but Keith pressed on.

“Or just in general. I just can’t seem to … connect with others. I’m not good at that. You are.”
Even though Lance’s back was turned to him Keith could see how he froze, head tilted a little. Listening. He took his chance and went on.
“Remember when we were on that desert planet and neither Pidge nor me could convince the aliens to let us evacuate them? But then you came in and only needed two minutes with their leader to make them trust us?”

Lance shook his head.
“You were still wearing your helmets, that was rude to them.”
“Yeah but we didn’t know! We never would have figured that out if you hadn’t!” Keith took a careful step forward, around Lance, to look at him again. Some of the tension had seeped out of the other boy’s shoulders and his expression wasn’t quite as hardened as before.
“Yeah”, Lance mumbled. “You guys would’ve been lost without me.”
“We would have been!”, Keith insisted, still not sure what he was doing, only that it seemed to work at least a little.

“And … and that’s not the only thing! You’re … you’re a great shot. An incredible shot! There’s a reason your bayard is a rifle and mine is for close combat. You’re our long range guy, yeah? You don’t have to beat me at hand to hand when you can beat me in a shooting competition any day. And your bond with your lion…”
That was apparently the wrong thing to say. Lance rolled his eyes and shook his head.
“Yours is better. The things Red does for you, it’s crazy…”

“Oh god!”, Keith groaned, throwing his arms out. “Stop comparing yourself to me! You’re your own person! And you bring your own skills to the team! We all need you and if you can’t see how much Blue adores you, you’re an even bigger idiot than I thought!”
There was a pause, Lance squinting at him as if deciding to trust him or not. Keith stubbornly held the gaze.

“You mean that, don’t you?”, Lance asked after a while, expression shifting from suspicious to thoughtful. He sucked his lower lip into his mouth, biting down on it.
“In case you haven’t noticed”, Keith said, posture relaxing again. “I’m also a really bad liar.”
Lance huffed another dry laugh at that but the creases around his eyes vanished as he relaxed.
“You really are”, he smiled tentatively and Keith couldn’t even bring himself to be mad at him. Not when he just coaxed a smile out of Lance. The first one in weeks.

Then Lance reached out to take his hand, squeezing it tightly, and Keith was way too surprised to react. The grip around his fingers was strong and warm, oddly pleasant.
“Come with me”, Lance said, tugging him towards the door without a care in the world for his half dismantled armor.
“What … where…”
“Shooting range”, Lance answered, completely nonchalant with a little shrug. “Wanna beat your ass at something right now.”
Keith snorted but let himself be dragged away. If that’s all it took to make Lance smile again he’d lose a hundred shooting competitions against him.

BBC’s Wild Alaska: Spring

If you’re looking for a gorgeous and informative way to kill an hour, I definitely recommend checking out this first episode of the Wild Alaska triad on Netflix. Incredible shots, accurate information, only informed anthropomorphism - it’s pretty much perfect. Plus, whiny bear cubs, a screaming newborn sea otter, and sperm whales stealing cod from fishermen.

Count Your Lucky Stars

So this is a short Langst idea that came to me in a dream. It is very loosely based on and inspired by this post. There’s going to be two alternative endings to go with it. Both up by Monday (hopefully). Anyways hope you enjoy :D

What. The. Hell. That’s all they could seem to think as they realized they left Lance behind. How could they be so stupid? The Blue Lion had returned with a cockpit full of prisoners, so why wasn’t her paladin flying her. When they questioned the prisoners to find out his location all it did was increase their worries. He was still stuck on the Galra ship. You know, the one they had already wormhole away from.

“Oh, this is bad. This is really, really bad,” Hunk said as he begun pacing the infirmary after they delivered the rescued prisoners to the healing pods.

“Calm down buddy. We’re all worried about Lance right now. He’ll be fine.” Shiro was trying to soothe Hunk, but his words weren’t even working on himself. He of all people knew the horrors of being a captive of the Galra. He could only hope they wouldn’t put Lance to fight in the rings, not that their interrogation methods were much better.

“Lance is a quick thinker; he’ll find a way to keep himself safe until we find him. We just need to have faith.” Coran’s words were a little more encouraging, but there was still a problem.

“Exactly how long will that be exactly? None of us are in the condition to go back and fight, and who’s to say they’ll even be in the same system or have him on the same ship when we’re finally ready. I’ve already lost one brother to the Galra, I’m not about to lose another,” Pidge declared.

“I say we go back whether we’re physically ready or not. Pidge is right if we don’t go back now who knows when we’ll find him again. Not only does staying here extends the time he’s with the Galra, but it also leaves us down one paladin and unable to form Voltron.“ Keith was so mad at himself right now. He shouldn’t have listened when Lance told him to go on without him. That idiot was always sacrificing himself for others. He should’ve told Lance no, and stay to fight with him.

“Paladins I know you’re all worried, as am I. But we should consider the passengers we have on board. What if we go back and something goes wrong? We’ll be essentially handing them back over to the Galra after they just got a taste of freedom. Keith, I understand your point about Voltron, but like Pidge said, none of you are in the condition to fight right now. It’s better one Paladin than all five of you.”

Allura knew she must’ve sounded heartless now, but she felt she was making the right choice. As the leader, she must make the correct decisions, even if it’s not the popular one. The looks her crew was giving her proved that her choice was not the popular one indeed. Allura was only considering what was best for everyone that was here at the time. She wasn’t going to send them into another heavy battle injured and tired.

"You know princess, I understand what you’re saying, but when you were captured by the Galra a while back, Lance was ready to go get you, guns blazing. I guess I just supposed you’d do the same for him,” Hunk stated dejectedly. He turned to head out of the room, Pidge, and Keith on his heels.

None of them wanted to play the waiting game right now, but it’s all they can do. She doesn’t take Hunk’s words too personally because she understands he’s coming from a place of hurt. She wants nothing more than to go in “guns blazing”, as Hunk called it, to go rescue Lance. But that would be thinking like a friend, not a leader and certainly not a princess. With Coran on their side, it should take too long for the castle and everyone on it to be battle ready once more.

It took a week. And with every day that passed, the more tensed and worried everyone got. The prisoners the rescued were fully healed and sent back to their home planets or somewhere safer, and the castle was back at full operating power. Unfortunately, like most of them feared they had lost track of Lance. Pidge had her tech set to alert her to any transmissions that even slightly mentioned the blue paladin. Allura had sent word to their allies to keep an eye out, and the Blade of Marmora had their inside people looking out. They just have to play the waiting game a little longer.

Lance’s absence seemed to affect Hunk the most until eventually, he started spending time in Lance’s room. No one thought anything about it until one day he came to the common room crying.

“Guys, what if we find Lance and he doesn’t want to come back? What if they took him to Prince Lotor and he chooses to stay with him?”

“Hunk what are you talking about? Why would Lance want to stay with the Galra of all people,” Keith asked.

They didn’t receive an answer. Hunk just motioned for them to follow him as he leads them to Lance’s room. It was cleaner than they expected, but they suppose Hunk may have had something to do with that. The bed was unmade as evidence that Hunk was more than likely sleeping in here too. He stopped right in front of Lance’s desks where there were some scraps of papers as well as two jars. One was labeled “The Good” and had about two handfuls of colorful stars. The other was labeled “The Bad” and was nearly overflowing with black stars.

Shiro remembered this tradition from his childhood, but it appeared that Lance had a different way of doing things. He doesn’t understand why this would make Hunk think Lance doesn’t want to come back. Shiro picked up a purple star from the good jar and started to unfold it. And that’s why we bring our sharpshooter. -S

He remembered that moment. Lance had made an incredible, almost impossible, shot, and Shiro felt so proud at that moment. Not thinking anything much of it, he picked a star from “the bad” jar and unfold it. You are the worst pilot ever! -K

It was then Shiro got an idea where this was heading. He kept opening more of the black star and some of the things on them shocked him.

I hope I don’t need to remind you that the only reason you’re here is that the best pilot in your class had a discipline issue and flunked out. Don’t follow in his footsteps. -I

Aw, Lance, you just ruined it. -H

He’d be Sendak’s prisoner right now, if not for Pidge. -A

Well, you wouldn’t have survived the explosion if Hunk and Coran hadn’t gotten a new Crystal. -P

I’m taking Keith with me. -S

Shiro realized that these were all things they said that hurt Lance in some way. It also suddenly came back that none of them had told Lance thank you for that time Sendak almost took the castle. He’s sure at some point Coran did, but no one else. Not for waking up and shooting Sendak’s arm off, or anything else he did for them for that matter. They were always just distracted by Lance’s boisterous personality, they never considered how they spoke to him. And the jar was so full, who knew what other things were said that affected him negatively.

At this point, the others began reading the unfolded stars and were probably reaching the same conclusion as Shiro did. Hunk’s concern made sense as he unwrapped the colorful stars and realized most of them were things Lotor said. He probably realized the Blue Paladin’s insecurities and used them to his advantage. When were the two even alone enough for these things to be said?

If Lance didn’t come back they’d have no one to blame but themselves. They pushed him away with their words. They basically handed Lance over to the Galra.
