Roscoe Dillon, aka the Top! As those who follow this blog probably know, he’s a Flash villain, and an original member of the Rogues. He was one of the first six who joined up together, making him a founding member. But he eventually became an outcast and very unpopular amongst the group, and became an antagonist towards them despite clearly craving their friendship…both he and the situation are complicated.
He had a lifelong interest in tops, and decided to teach himself to spin at super-speed to become a supervillain. Through the wacky physics of the DCU, this spinning increased his intelligence to genius level and later gave him telekinetic powers. It also killed him soon after he’d developed powers, but he continued to exist as a ghost who could possess dead bodies to ‘live’ again. His psionic powers eventually increased to give him the ability to mind-control people and induce vertigo in others, so he became quite formidable…and somewhat megalomaniacal too. Most of the Rogues are generally content to stay low-profile and just steal to sustain themselves, but Roscoe has tried to take over a) the world, b) the USA, and c) wanted to run Keystone City at varying times. He experiences bouts of significant mental illness, which probably partially explains that.
He dated Lisa Snart (Golden Glider), who got her start in supervillainy as furious revenge for his death. But aside from her his relationship with the Rogues has ranged from casual friendship to outright hatred. Lisa’s brother Len (Captain Cold) has a particular hatred for him, and was the last person to kill him.
In the Silver and Bronze Ages (1960s and 70s), before his first death, he was an affable and even dorky fellow who had a dark side which came out occasionally. But either death or his time in Hell or both seem to have changed him, making him more unstable and meaner and sometimes downright terrifying. That’s why he can seem very different at varying points of his history. Personally, I like both the dork and the terror versions of him, which are fun for different reasons.
His last host body was killed in 2005 and he’s been gone a long time, but in exactly TWO WEEKS he’s coming back to DC continuity!! He may be somewhat different now because it’s not the same continuity, but I’m hoping he’ll be similar to his old self.
And my avatar was drawn by the very talented @meindraws! He’s wearing a stylish top hat here, which I wish he’d worn more often in canon.
First Appearance: Flash v1 #122.
