So there’s this one teacher who was really nice to me in ninth grade, buying me food and stuff because we both loved cats and hated other grade 9 students. I have this room-thing at school I can go into if I get stressed out, and this teacher bought me a bed-chair-thing and a pillow so that I didn’t have to sit on the floor, which is very nice of her! Also, she gave me cookies!
This year, though… she was nice at the beginning of the year, but I think she’s had it now. Possibly because I care about ethics in the food industry. First, she tried to give me a water bottle for no reason. Those aren’t good for the environment. It was a Nestle-brand water bottle. Even worse. It was maybe 5 cm tall and had a cartoon llama on it. That’s not immoral but that makes it worse anyways. I politely declined, but then she tried to force me to take it. I said no, and then she walked away while mocking me. I know this is a joke, but it wasn’t a one-time joke.
Today, she bought some McDonald’s. That’s fine, it’s whatever, I didn’t judge her for it. She offered me some fries. I declined. She tried to offer them to me three more times, which I said no to. Then she said she’d throw them out unless I ate them. I said, “why not just offer them to another student?” “Because I don’t want to.”, she responded. Okay… She asked me why I didn’t want them (since I love salty/junk food). I decided I might as well admit it was because capitalism. Then she went on a long rant about how “EVERYTHING is capitalism, your CLOTHES are capitalism” (yes, but they aren’t made by a rich worldwide corporation. They’re made by small companies) and how “McDonald’s isn’t ALL bad, they have the Ronald McDonald foundation and McHappy and McThis and McThat” like okay shut up I don’t care. Just because a mean person has a dog doesn’t make them not mean.
Also, I’ve been vegan since February. I told her that. She knew I was vegan. She said it was okay. Sometimes she would offer me some food, and I said no due to an ingredient. She’d respond with “It’s not REAL egg, it’s liquid egg!” Aren’t all eggs liquid? Then today she offered me some food and I said no thanks, I read the ingredients and they aren’t vegan. Then she suddenly started yelling “You’re VEGAN?! I’m sorry but I CANNOT do this, I CANNOT support you! You don’t eat enough, you’re a picky eater, what will you eat?” I reminded her that my veganism is not a new thing, and that I’ve been doing fine for the past 4 and a half months. Then she continued, “NO, I understand why you wouldn’t eat something that had a face but milk and eggs? What would the cows do with their milk if humans didn’t drink it?” I told her that they would feed it to their babies, and really the only reason they produce it constantly is due to hormones and the way they are treated by farmers. So then she launched into the most stereotypical thing EVER. “Don’t you miss ICE CREAM?? When I go down to that burger place, I always but some delicious ICE CREAM.” I said that there are alternatives, and I can make do with those. “But they’re not CREAMY enough!!11″ True, but that depends on the kind. “MMMM, ICE CREAM AND YOGURT-” I don’t even like yogurt. “AND CHOCOLATE AND, oh, BACON! One time I had a friend who was vegetarian but you know what got him? Bacon. Mmmm, bacon!!!11″ I’ve been vegetarian since age six. I think I can live without bacon, delicious as it may be. Honestly at this point I was just laughing.
Also, she’s like 1/3rd First Nations and uses that as an excuse for everything. Pretty sure a fully Native person wouldn’t support capitalism…
I’ve never called anyone a “carnist” before, but this woman IS a carnist, quite frankly. She is nice, but her only form of affection is buying and capitalism.
