Tom and Lin-Manuel: An Appreciation/Jealous Rant

Every writer has a golden period – a chunk of time when her brain is ripest, when the veins he is tapping are the richest, when the ideas, big and small, spill out over the sides of the bucket instead of having to be patiently collected like drops of rain off a leaf. This is true for songwriters, playwrights, novelists, screenwriters, anyone who writes anything in any genre. Go look at John Hughes’s IMDb page and marvel at his golden period, which I would bookend as 1983-1990. It’s outrageous. He wrote Vacation, Mr. Mom, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Pretty in Pink, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Some Kind of Wonderful, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, Uncle Buck, and Home Alone in eight years. Eight years?! That’s absurd.

But then look at his next 20 years. You won’t find one movie that is better than the worst one he wrote in those seven years. The vein ran dry. It always does. That’s just the deal.

Tom Petty’s golden period never ended. Or, at least, the silver periods on either side of his golden period were seemingly infinite. No matter where you think he peaked – Full Moon Fever, or Wildflowers, or Damn the Torpedoes – the decades on either side were wonderful. He was great from the moment he released his first album in 1977 to the day he died last month. For forty years he wrote, and wrote, and wrote, and the songs he wrote were good or great or amazing.

Tom Petty wrote “Breakdown” and “American Girl” in 1977. He wrote “You Don’t Know How it Feels” seventeen years later, in 1994. He wrote “You Got Lucky” in 1982, “King’s Highway” in 1992, “The Last DJ” in 2002. He wrote “I Won’t Back Down,” “Runnin’ Down a Dream,” Free Fallin’,” “Love is a Long Road,” “A Face in the Crowd,” Yer So Bad,” and “The Apartment Song,” and “Depending on You,” all in 1989, and they were all on the same album, and that’s absurd.

He wrote “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” in 1981 and “Big Weekend” in 2006. He wrote every song on Wildflowers – and they are all great – in or around 1994. He wrote fifty other great songs I haven’t named yet, like “Don’t Come Around Here No More” and “Jammin Me.” He wrote great songs you’ve heard a million times, and great songs you’ve maybe never heard, like “Billy the Kid” (1999) and “Walls” (1996) which was buried on the soundtrack to She’s the One.  He took a break from the Heartbreakers and casually released “End of the Line” and “Handle With Care” and “She’s My Baby” with the Traveling Wilburys in 1989-90. He wrote “Refugee” in 1980 and “I Should Have Known It” in 2010. Is there any rock and roll songwriter alive who wrote two songs that good, 30 years apart? (Paul McCartney wrote “Hey Jude” in 1968, and only 12 years later he wrote “Wonderful Christmas Time,” which is so bad it nearly retroactively undid “Hey Jude.”)

He wrote about rock and roll things, like ’62 Cadillacs, getting out of this town, and dancing with Mary Jane. He wrote about love and loss and heartbreak. He wrote legitimately funny jokes, and moribund memories, and personal narratives, and imaginative flights of fancy. One of his characters calls his father his “old man” and it somehow isn’t cheesy. He was from Florida and California and wrote about both of them, and every time I’m on Ventura Boulevard I think of vampires, because the images he wrote are indelible. 

Petty didn’t just write songs directed at women, like most rock stars. He wrote about women, and he wrote for women, and he wrote with women. He treated the women in his songs as lovingly and respectfully as he treated the men. He cared about them as much, he spent as much time thinking about them, and he liked them as much, and all of that is rare.

He wrote simply, but not boringly. He made his characters three-dimensional, somehow, in a matter of seconds. There’s a famous (probably apocryphal) story about Hemingway bragging he could write an entire novel in six words, then writing: “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” I prefer the 18-word novel Petty wrote as the first verse to “Down South” –

Headed back down south
Gonna see my daddy’s mistress
Gonna buy back her forgiveness
Pay off every witness

When I was working on Parks and Recreation, whenever we needed a song to score an important moment in Leslie Knope’s life, we chose a Tom Petty song. It started with “American Girl,” when her biggest career project came to fruition. It was “Wildflowers” when she said goodbye to her best friend. It was “End of the Line” at the moment the show ended. For the seven seasons of our show, Tom Petty was the writer we trusted to explain how our main character was feeling, because he wrote so much, so well, for so long.

It seems like a joke, Hamilton – a joke in a TV show where one of the characters is a struggling New York actor, and is always dragging his friends to his terrible plays. Like Joey in Friends. There’s an episode of Friends where Joey is in a terrible musical called like Freud!, about Sigmund Freud, and you get to see some of it, and it’s predictably terrible. Freud! the musical is arguably a better idea than Hamilton the musical.

I’m far from the first person to say this – I’m probably somewhere around the millionth person to write about Hamilton, and the maybe 500,000th to make this particular point, but it needs to be said – a hip-hop Broadway musical about the founding fathers is an astoundingly terrible idea. Lin-Manuel Miranda should never have written it. As soon as he started to write it, he should’ve said to himself, “What the fuck am I doing?!” and stopped. And after he got halfway through, he should’ve junked it, gotten really drunk, and moved on with his life, and made his wife and friends swear to never mention the weird six months where he was trying to write a hip-hop musical about Alexander Hamilton. I literally guarantee you that when Lin-Manuel Miranda first told his friends what he was writing, every one of them reacted with at best a frozen smile, and at worst a horrified recoiling. Some of them might have been outwardly encouraging – “sounds awesome bud! Go get ‘em!” But then later, alone, they would call each other and say What the fuck is he doing?

There is a moment, in Hamilton, when what you are watching overwhelms you. (It’s not the same moment for everyone, but most everyone has one, I suspect.) It’s the moment when the enormity, the complexity, the meaning of it, the entirety of it, overpowers you, and you realize that what you are experiencing is new – new both in your specific life, and new, like, on Earth.  The first time I saw it, that moment was a line in the middle of “Yorktown.” Hamilton sang the line And so the American experiment begins / With my friends all scattered to the winds, and I burst into tears in a way I hadn’t since I was 10 and a baseball went through a guy’s legs in the World Series. Something about how casually he says that – And so the American experiment begins – just settled over me, like a collapsing tent, and this thing I was watching wasn’t in front of me, it was everywhere around me, and it was exhilarating and transformative.

(If I could put this part in a footnote, I would, but I don’t know how to, so: I should mention that I am very far from a musical theater aficionado. I have seen maybe eight musicals in my life. Not only did I not expect to cry, hard, during Hamilton, I did not expect to enjoy it. I saw it like a week after it opened on Broadway, kind of on a whim, knew nothing about it, and the last thing I said to my wife, as the lights went down, was: “We’ll leave at intermission.”)

The second time I saw it, that moment came much earlier (I knew what I was getting into, this time, so I was more ready to be subsumed). It came barely three minutes in, when the entire cast of the show, in a piece of choreography that can best be referred to as “badass,” all walk down to the very front of the stage and stand, shoulder to shoulder, and sing very loudly about how Alexander Hamilton never learned to take his time. The cast has, to this point, trickled on stage, slowly, one by one, telling you Hamilton’s origin story, and then suddenly there they all are, all of them – maybe 20? 50? It seems like 1000? – as close to the audience as they can get, and they are every size and ethnicity and gender, and their voices are loud, and I thought to myself, oh my God, this is a cast of people descended from every nation on Earth, all singing about the foundations of the American experience, and yes I “knew” that, intellectually, but holy shit, now that I see them all, I know it, like in my stomach, I understand it, and what a thing that is.

The third time I saw Hamilton, that moment was during “It’s Quiet Uptown,” when this enormous, sprawling, improbable, otherworldly, multi-ethnic, historical, art tornado presses pause on all of its historical-cultural-ethno-sociological-artistic investigations, and spends four and a half spare minutes with a couple who are grieving an unimaginable tragedy.  Specifically, it was the lines

What a thing to do, for your characters – to give them four and a half minutes in the middle of an enormous, sprawling, historical swirl, to just be sad. What a piece of writing that is.

(Again, should be a footnote, but: as long as I’m talking about writers here, I should point out that if the late Harris Wittels were alive, he would, at this moment, text me and hit me with a “humblebrag” for writing about how I have seen Hamilton three times, and he would be right. Miss you Harris!)

In the hundreds of hours of my life I have spent thinking about Hamilton since I first saw it – far more hours than any other single piece of art I have ever experienced – I have revisited that same thought over and over: he never should’ve written it. It was an absurd thing to do. It took him a year to write the title song, then another year to write the second song, and how did he not give up when two years had gone by and he’d written two songs?  He must’ve known in his heart it needed to be a 50-song, 2 ½-hour enterprise, and he had two songs after two years, and he kept going. How did he keep going? I’ve been trying to write this blog post about two writers I admire for different reasons since the week Tom Petty died, and I’ve almost given up five times.

At this point, the entire musical is that “moment” for me. It’s the whole thing, now – the thing that overwhelms me is the whole thing. The conception of it, the writing of it, the rewriting of it. The music and the motifs and the themes and the threads and the dramatic shape and the characters and their inner lives, and the eagle-eye writer’s view it took to keep all of that in his head, all of it, the whole time. The writing of it. The utterly impossible writing of it.

Katsuki Yuuri

Yamamoto: Many of YoI’s skaters were inspired by real-life people, and Yuuri is no exception.
In Yuuri’s case, I’ve heard about someone who is usually timid, lacks confidence and believes to be mentally weak, but once he steps on ice, turns into a competitive skater who wants the audience, the judges, and the viewers from all over the world to   look only at them. I found it to be a really interesting mentality and that’s where I got my idea for Yuuri from.
This Yuuri stands at the edge of the proverbial cliff - and then changes through his meeting with his hero and rival, Viktor. Thanks to this meeting, Yuuri himself starts reaching for more and more, grows stronger.
I find relationships with labels like “lovers” or “family” to be stifling, so I came up with these two characters that are not bound by names like that, who hold each other dear and who share a bond that would be difficult to replace.
As a skater Yuuri has an individual sense of rhythm, his steps his unique weapon, but even on a solid ground, he’s a great dancer. When he was young, Minako-sensei taught Yuuri the basics of ballet, and, as Viktor praises him highly, his skating feels like he is creating music with his body - it moves into dance on its own as he charms his audience.

Kubo: Yuuri is the kinda type of a glass-wearing character I draw often. (laughs) Many skaters have bad eyesight, and Yuuri too skates without his glasses. I though people would love the narrow-eyed, uneasy face he makes when trying to read his score, so I added that element, too.
I aimed for a design that would be easy for Hiramatsu to draw, so instead of deciding every detail, I drew a base that would later spring to life under Hiramatsu’s hands.
“Change” is an important aspect of Yuuri, so I gave him a seemingly ordinary appearance instead of making an easy-to-get pretty boy.
Yuuri is slightly taller than a typical Japanese person - that’s because both the director and I are around 165-170cm, and we though it’d be nice if he was taller than us. Yuuri’s eyebrows are in a  slanted ハ shape, but turn sharp when he competes. Things that are easier to explain via animation, like Yuuri’s hair growing longer as the show progresses, are also present.

Hiramatsu: I made sure he looks different during his chubby and slim phases. His best body shape would be right after “Onsen on Ice”.
We based Yuuri on a typical Japanese body: he doesn’t have long legs, wide shoulders or a spectacular butt, but going with Kubo’s drawings, I gave him long arms and bony hands. Yuuri grows about 10cm taller when he dons his skating shoes, which makes his legs look longer. Yuuri’s Japanese silhouette was influenced by Yasuhiko’s style, who was in charge of many of his scenes.

Viktor Nikiforov

Yamamoto: I think, surprisingly, there are many people like Viktor in the skating world (laughs). Viktor doesn’t care about what people around him think of him, he thinks it’s obvious that he is the center of all the attention. Viktor acts as he pleases and through it, he believes he brings joy to others.
I love it when characters like him appear out of the blue. In this case, Yuuri is the cause of Viktor’s sudden appearance. Yuuri barged into Viktor’s world that he closed himself in without noticing, believing he has to create all the new surprises. Yuuri offered Viktor a possibility he hadn’t thought about - becoming someone’s coach.
Unconsciously, Viktor is lonely, without anyone of similar circumstances, without anyone he could empathize together with. Viktor didn’t yearn for someone to understand him; he didn’t see it as a problem, but also didn’t realize how lonely he was. Yuuri is not the only one who became stronger by experiencing love - through Yuuri, Viktor learned new feelings and grew stronger.

Kubo: I challenged myself to create a character everyone would look at and find handsome, moreso than in my previous works. Viktor’s hair is silver, with some lighter streaks. At first I also thought about giving him a hair that looks silver, but once you see it from up close, turns out to be blond hair with many streaks of white hair. However, I couldn’t find enough information on how white hair grows on blondes so I gave up (laughs).
Thinking of balancing his height with Yuuri’s when they stand next to each other, I made Viktor slightly taller. I wanted Viktor’s face to be recognizable in gag scenes and so gave him a heart-shaped mouth. This is something straight out of the shojo manga era of “Tokimeki Tonight” or “Ohayo! Spank” (laughs).
I wanted there to be something unexpected in contrast to Viktor’s usual handsomeness. That aspect of him where he worries about his receding hairline, you know, where it goes slightly above the sweet spot? I wanted the viewers to watch it with a beating heart and confuse that feeling with falling in love. A suspension bridge effect. (haha)
I took heaps of inspiration for Viktor’s sexiness from Stephane Lambiel.

Hiramatsu: I paid attention to the flow and quality of his hair - and same goes for Yurio. Viktor’s eyebrows are straight, rarely ever turn into a mountain-like shape. Viktor’s posture is beautiful and adds to his brilliance; he sports a magnificent butt and long limbs.
Viktor has a confidence of an adult, but as someone still in his 20s, he can be quite childish. Viktor’s heart-shaped mouth was there in Kubo’s storyboards, which influenced the staff to emphasize that in the show.

Yuri Plisetsky

Yamamoto: Russia is a country where skating can change your life - the country supports its strong skaters. When I learned that some families bet on their children or grandchildren becoming famous and make them learn skating  I thought there must be many children with unrelenting spirit and a will to climb up - and created a deformed version of that in a form of a Russian badboy.
Yurio has many lines with swears, but there’s one in ep 10 that angered Viktor when Yurio implied he is now looking after a “pig”. This line goes back to my 20s - whenever I saw a pair wearing matching rings I’d think, “A pair of pigs tied with rings” (laughs). When I mentioned it to Kubo, she was like “Pigs! That’s good!” and we decided to put it in. Yurio is the only one with a potty mouth in the series, so coming up with his bad boy lines was fun.
Many growing skaters probably understand what Yurio said when he mentioned his time in his current body grows short. Girls change a lot during that period, but boys too have their muscles grow - it’s a big burden on the body that makes it impossible to perform some moves. We tried to put as many things that Yurio can only do now as we could into the show.

Kubo: There are many elements to Yurio’s design that make him popular, such as blond hair and blue eyes. He really does stand out. Looks-wise Yurio is probably most similar to Rabi from Madō King Granzort.
To quote the director, there are many elements from different skaters in Yurio. The base inspiration was Yulia Lipnitskaya. When I saw her at the rink, I realized there are many different kinds of skaters and that a more mischievous character could work too.
Yurio’s visuals were decided on early, earlier than Yuuri’s, as he is very anime-like, easy to animate. As story progresses, Yurio’s hair grows longer. I wanted to express how, when you haven’t seen him for a while, Yurio grows more and  more beautiful. Is it Lilia who styles his hair, or is it Yurio himself?

Hiramatsu: Half of his face is covered with hair, which strengthens his expressions. It was fun to give emotions to that slightly visible eye. Yurio’s body is slim, girlish, with long limbs and not much muscle.
I draw him as I would draw a girl. His looks were heavily influenced by Tatenaka’s style, who was in charge of many scenes as well as the skating of our model Honoka Kawanishi. Yurio has a potential to grow, outgrowing Yuuri and reaching 180cm or so.

Christophe Giacometti

Yamamoto: I wanted to create a character who would share popularity with Viktor, a character overflowing with masculine charm. I wanted Chris to have this showy sexiness in him like an ice dancer, so he’s one of the taller single skaters in the series. It was so difficult to show a sexy man type of a character, as there aren’t many visual symbols associated with it. I am hoping to one day establish a new frontier of male sexiness.

Hiramatsu: Chris has a sturdy body, and the most emphasized butt in the whole series. I poured all of my drawing skills into that scene where Chris grabs and lifts his butt while skating. (laughs) Until halfway both his arms and butt are raised, and then arms go up, butt goes down, which is how I showed the butt’s bounciness.

Phichit Chulanont

Yamamoto: Yuuri is friends with Phichit because even if Yuuri doesn’t go to him, Phichit will come to Yuuri on his own. Yuuri doesn’t have to be suspicious of Phichit’s motives and he doesn’t show customary concern over him like Japanese people do which in turn is less stressful for Yuuri.

Jean-Jacques Leroy

Yamamoto: I created JJ because I wanted a character type that falls into a “mentally a musclehead” category. JJ entered Toronto University as a top student, off season participates in charity activities. His girlfriend is his HS classmate, but as a devout Christian, premarital sex is a no-no - they’re in a pure relationship.
He often says JJ this, JJ that in conversations and in general only talks about himself. Even if he nods with understanding as someone speaks, he soon butts in and changes the topic to himself.
JJ talked to Otabek in ep10 because he found it sad that his old rinkmate was alone - couldn’t leave him out of kindness of his heart. Even when people find him overbearing, JJ believes he is doing a good deed, so it doesn’t bother him.

Hiramatsu: JJ could be considered a good catch if he just shut up. (laughs)

Otabek Altin

Yamamoto: First, I wanted a Kazakh skater to be a dark horse of the GPF and that’s how Otabek was born. There are many Russians in Kazakhstan and Russian is the official language so I thought Otabek could easily be friends with Yurio. Some Kazakh skaters are known to train in Russia, so the bit where Otabek participated in Yakov’s camp and became fascinated with Yurio came to me naturally. We created many qualities that Yurio finds cool in Otabek outside of skating  - such as riding a bike and DJing. 

Lee Seunggil

Yamamoto: All Seung-Gil does is training, and has no interest in things beyond skating. To create a contrast with his personality, for his SP, I went with a passionate mambo. The idea to have him count his score as he skates during competition came from Kubo.

Hiramatsu: Because of his personality, I always draw him alone in the back of group images, but he still looks into the camera. (laughs)

Michele Crispino

Yamamoto: To protect his sis, Michele tries to be threatening to scare off others. This doesn’t work on Emil, so they’re on good terms. 

Kubo: As an Italian who cares about appearance, I made him look like he visits a hairdresser once every two weeks. But I also wanted to add something non-Italian to him, hence the pretty dark personality.

Hiramatsu: Michele also would be a good catch if he shut up.

Emil Nekola

Yamamoto: Emil is rarely scared and there is nothing two-faced about his personality; he doesn’t feel too down when he makes mistakes which means he can still grow and become strong.

Kubo: I googled “Czech, male” and based Emil on one of the first pictures I found. At the beginning Yamamoto was talking about making Emil the most handsome out of the European skaters, but I completely forgot. (haha)

Oliver was the perfect gentleman throughout that entire scene. 

Starting from the beginning, he was… everything. He was a man who was clearly still in love with this woman, but he’d also heard her last season when she said she was, for all intents and purposes, done. He was a man who was willing to get every tiny scrap of her natural sunlight, no matter what the cost for himself. Y’all are lying to yourselves if Felicity wasn’t doing exactly what Curtis suggested when the idea of her trying the salmon ladder came about. She’s all cute and flirty and doing something that shows a lot of skin, and yet, the entire time, Oliver was just so sweet. He didn’t push it, he didn’t take what are pretty obvious signs, he didn’t do anything without her explicit permission and direction. They went through two bottles of wine, my friends, they were quite a few sheets to the wind and still, he was the perfect gentleman. Even when she asked him to help her down, when he grabbed her waist, when he held her close, letting her down gently, cradling her like she’s the most important thing in his entire world (she is)…

Felicity finally makes the first move, she kisses him and remember the way he responded?

He gives it his all because that’s all he wants to give her. He messed up so much in the past, and while the source of those issues are deeply buried and require a fucking bulldozer to unearth, it doesn’t change that it effectively ruined the best thing in his life. But now, now he has her back and it’s everything. Yes, the wine has stripped their inhibitions, but it just scratched off the surface, revealing what they’ve always, always wanted.

(This was cute af, anon, I so agree. He’s so totally getting swept up in the sensation of having her in his arms again, of kissing her, tasting her, feeling her, and it’s intoxicating. It takes over everything, leaving no room for anything but continuing to feel those wonderful things. We see that in the way he suddenly spins her, with so much intent, so much purpose - I know I’m not the only one who thought that was going somewhere else - but then he’s so painfully gentle with her. He could absolutely rip her sweater to pieces if he wanted to and he knew she probably wouldn’t complain one bit until later, but he didn’t, because remember, this is the Oliver who has been in love with this woman forever and he lost her and he’s been respecting her wishes in not pursuing a relationship and suddenly she’s here and she’s with him, but that doesn’t change where they are mentally, where he’s at mentally. (Wow, tangent.) It’s marked with that soft, adorable smile of his - that happy smile of his - and the way he says, “Thank you.” It’s really as if he’s thanking her for giving them this chance again.)

And then…

The passion is back, brimming over, all-consuming, burning them from the insides out, taking over everything, pulling them together like the magnets that they are…

But that’s not all it’s about, not quite. It’s about that, oh yes, but it’s also about connecting again, not just physically but emotionally and mentally, with their very souls. This isn’t just physical for Oliver, nor is it for Felicity, which is what he needs to double check, he needs to see, to make sure that… 

Well, that this is happening, that it’s what he thinks it is, that she’s on the same page, that she wants this, that she wants it as badly as he does, that she’s doing it for the same reasons, that…

He has to make sure. He has to. One, because it’s Oliver and when it comes to Felicity, there’s never been a halfway. 

Which is so very interesting considering what happened tonight - thinking about it from Oliver’s perspective, he honestly thought he was giving Felicity everything he could. He didn’t know at the time that he was only giving half of himself, only giving her the pieces he felt worthy of her, not realizing that he was hiding things from her, all under the guise of trying to protect her, in his own warped way. He has been broken, in his mind, for so long, but it’s only when he’s whole within himself that he can finally be with her, which we’re finally seeing, thank goodness.

He’s all in or he’s all out and he needs to know that Felicity is there with him.

And there it is. She’s right there with him, her love for him shining through, bathing him in its purity, a cleansing feeling that shines light in the darkest corners of his being (even if he doesn’t recognize it until much much much later).

Now that the special move(ish) event “The Battle For Mewni” finally aired, It’s arguably disappointing that we didn’t get to spend more time with Toffee, especially considering that the whole thing has been the climax to that incredible build-up that started back in the Season 1 finale. 

Since his introduction, the lizard turned out to be a very shady, but interesting character, a villain whose plan and motivations were shrouded in mystery. I was honestly looking forward to finally find out what he was truly seeking. However, as the fittingly-named “Toffee” episode premiered, it almost looked like the reptile was simply going after his finger and that everything turned out to be just an overcomplicated revenge plot that it’s honestly baffling it managed to work (for the most part -he’s dead, after all) in the first place.

And, yeah, the show didn’t really do a great job at educating us viewers on its universe, its magical themes, etc. Granted, Season 3 has just started and we’re overall halfway through the entire show (assuming that it doesn’t get even more Seasons after the fourth one), so we may get more answers in the future. But when the show’s villains endgame starts being confusing rather than mysterious, you know something wrong. Or… did it?

No need to re-introduce the character as well all know him already but, yeah, Toffee is not exactly your average boastful, bombastic villain (which is already impressive, given that it’s a Disney XD show we’re talking about here). Do not expect him to burst into an evil laughter (at best, he just giggles menacingly). He’s a very shady, serious character in an otherwise wacky animated series -which SVTFOE was to almost annoying levels at the time.

This “silent” character trait is possibly what made his endgame rather confusing to most of us. “He did all of this for his finger!” except, that, he didn’t, like at all. Losing his finger was a merely a problem that he turned into an opportunity, via some magical mumbo-jumbo, but we’ll get to that.

In “Mewnipendence Day”, perhaps (still) one of the biggest game-changing episodes of the entire series so far, Toffee is seen reading a history book about Mewni, its royals and the magic wand(s). He’s just casually reading it during the first half of the episode and the show makes sure that we see what he’s doing, going as far as giving to the book itself a relatively detailed cover and content (not “Gravity Falls” level to details, but it’s enough to tell what the book is actually about -which is important).

As I said earlier, Toffee is not a villain who gloats about his evil plan and on how fools the heroes have been because they didn’t see it coming. Therefore, neither the writers or the character itself educated us viewers on what the hell he’s doing. Not directly or all at once at least.

Fast-forward to “Toffee”, we find out that the reptile has been “bathing” into what seems to be the source of all magic, corrupting it in the process. While, pacing-wise, all of this came too fast and too abruptly, saying that Toffee’s goal was his finger is rather misleading. Albeit in a sloppy, rushed way, the cartoon clearly did show us what Toffee was doing this whole time, confirming our theories while also removing all of our doubts:

Given the context and the flashback a couple of episodes earlier, and a bunch of other dialogues scattered through almost two entire seasons, it is now clear that the lizard’s endgame was the destruction of all magic, the only thing that still kept Mewmans in power and, accordingly, oppressed the monsters. Neither the reptile or the show directly told us, but they gave us subtle (and not-so-subtle) hints about it since the first Season. All the clues were there: the history book, the tapestry, Buff Frog’s line about Toffee knowing about Star and not liking her magic, and a bunch of other things. The series showed us Toffee’s plot and his Season-long effects on the show’s universe and characters, rather than having some kind of long exposition scene with some pacing issues here and there, but in the end, the whole thing turned out to be clear and perfectly understandable.

The finger wasn’t really his main goal, but instead his ticket back into the real world after his plan turned out to be a success (which is: corrupting the Mewman’s magic), something that could trigger his full regeneration via some kind of spell-thing he possibly read about in all those years of plotting. A bunch of well-deserved bonus points for being a rather spiteful final “middle finger” (hah!) to Moon, the one who blasted his finger off in the first place, who also ended up being the one who gave it back to him.

So, what’s the point of this post?
No one, really; just a summary of what I think Toffee’s plot was all about, which was in fact much simpler than it sounded. The only difference from almost every other (mostly animated) series is that the villain, in this case, didn’t monologue over and over about it so the audience could fully understand it in a single scene, but rather remained shady and silent about it, like a real schemer, which Toffee has been since his introduction, would have done, all while the cartoon showed us little hints here and there, so that us fans could connect the dots only when it was too late, just like the characters involved.

It’s sickly hot on the day they’re supposed to play their first match of the season, a late summer heat that peels the cold morning away and sweats people out of their layers.

Neil’s mostly used to discomfort, so he puts his head down and gets on the bus. The rest of the foxes complain dramatically and threaten to strip until Wymack blasts the air conditioning and cuffs a few heads.

Everyone zips their sweaters off and ties their hair up, starting the laborious process of nest-making for the duration of the 9 hour drive to Cleveland. Every time Neil looks Andrew is aloof and pristine, like the sun isn’t any better at getting under his armour than anyone else. 

If you’re looking properly, you can see sweat turning the ends of his hair up and darkening his temples. It’s a strange indignity that Andrew wears like a calculated choice.

Nicky presses his icy water bottle into the base of Neil’s neck, and he gasps, clutching for the source.

“He lives!” Nicky says. “I’ve been calling you for five minutes.”

“We’ve been on the bus for thirty seconds,” Neil snaps.

“Thirty seconds too long,” Nicky laughs, leaning over the back of his seat so his arms dangle over Neil’s lap. “You wanna come talk strategy with Kev?”

Neil meets Nicky’s bright eyes, overly conscious of Andrew at his back, mussed by the temperature. He feels buttery nostalgia for the three hours they spent talking on the way to Baltimore, teeth pulling his lip in the empty bus, opening doors and considering it a win when Andrew didn’t close them.

“We’ve been pouring over stats for two weeks,” Neil tells Nicky, purposefully looking out the window to avoid his gaze. “We’re walking in ready.”

“Ahh, you’d think that. But apparently we have ‘blind spots’ that need seeing to. So says her majesty.” Nicky smirks, nodding at Kevin over his shoulder.

“Is he vice captain?”

“No,” Nicky says, mouth already curling in satisfaction.

“Then tell him to fuck off.”

“With pleasure, Neil Josten,” Nicky says, overly dramatic, winking back at him as he wanders to Kevin’s seat.

“Are you finally sick of it?” Andrew asks, and Neil lets himself enjoy the thrum of satisfaction he gets whenever Andrew initiates things. He turns all the way around in his seat.

“Of exy? No. Of kevin, yes.”

Andrew’s cool eyes trip over the foxes and windows and coughing AC units, landing on Neil and settling. Neil feels a yank in his gut like someone caught him by the waist while he was running full speed.

“Give me your bag.”

The feeling ebbs in a distracted sort of way, and Neil frowns. “Why?”

Andrew looks away, eyelashes light and fine on his cheekbones when he blinks. Neil knows from experience that another five minutes of heat would have curled Andrew’s hair and flushed his cheeks and neck.

He wants to see that. Like if he could take Andrew off the bus and kiss him in the thick heat, it would fix the feeling in his stomach.

“I want something,” Andrew says simply.

Neil rolls his eyes, but stands anyway. “That’s new.” He sways with the bus as he wrestles his duffel bag from the overhead compartment, dropping it on the seat next to Andrew.

Andrew unzips the top halfway and peels back Neil’s meticulously packed layers. The bus nearly topples him, so he settles back in and watches Andrew work, charmed.

He seems to find what he’s looking for, and Neil sees a flash of black fabric and the blur of Andrew rising out of his seat and into the aisle.

“Where are you going?”

Andrew slides him an unimpressed look and walks to the bathroom installed in the back of the bus. Neil watches him go, wondering wildly if he’s supposed to follow him.

He glances back along the groove of the aisle and finds Kevin ignoring Aaron and Nicky to glare at him. Beyond him, Matt’s grinning at Dan as she talks one of the newcomers through a play, and Allison’s curled up with a sleep mask and Renee’s shoulder.

He sits back against the sun-hot window and lets the jerky motion of the road keep him alert. He looks back towards the closed bathroom door and forward again, curiosity shivering over him.

Andrew emerges a second later, and Neil’s mouth goes cottony dry.

He’s put on Neil’s shirt. It’s the one that goes high enough to cover the scars framing Neil’s collarbones when he’s wearing it, but it leaves his arms open. It was part of this layered ensemble that Andrew bought him over the summer, but he almost only wears it to sleep because it shows the thatched burns on his ribcage. It’s breezy and comfortable and it’s not the first time Andrew’s stolen it.

But he doesn’t usually wear it where people can see, with his sweaty hair pushed halfway back and his arms pink from the sun he caught on the roof yesterday.

He sweeps back into his seat and pulls one knee up to his chest, and Neil watches the orchestration of his muscles matching up and tensing.

Andrew’s finger enters his field of view, too close to focus on. “Get that look off your face.”

“Get my shirt off, then,” Neil says before he can clap a filter on it. Andrew splays his arm all over his lounging knee, and Neil can see a pale triangle of skin under his arm, which shouldn’t mean anything to him. It shouldn’t.

“I didn’t pack for 100 degrees,” Andrew says, voice mild.

“Good,” Neil blurts.“My clothes look really good on you.” He swallows, and Andrew blinks at him, a bored predator.

“That’s the gayest thing I’ve ever heard, Neil!” Nicky hollers from four seats up. Neil’s mouth pinches with annoyance. “I’ve fucked guys, and that’s the gayest thing I’ve ever heard.”

“No one wants to hear that,” Aaron says, putting in earbuds and shoving over to the far end of his seat.

“I thought it was relevant context,” Nicky argues, and Kevin smacks him in the back of the head.

The front of the bus devolves into chaotic conversation, and Neil looks back at Andrew.

“I was serious.”

“I know you were.” This would be where he took a drag from his cigarette, if this was their rooftop. This would be where he kisses him. Neil watches him with that secret in his mouth, and when Andrew looks back, he can tell he’s thinking the same thing.

“It will not be a regular occurrence,” Andrew says. “Your wardrobe is barely fit for one person.”

“Right.” Neil smiles right behind his teeth, where it doesn’t show on his face. “I’m willing to take the hit.”

Andrew regards him over the seat back. “Aren’t you always?”

Neil leans in and drags his eyes deliberately over the column of Andrew’s neck on the way to his face. “I want to kiss you.”

Andrew tilts his head. “I can’t help you.”

Neil takes this without complaint, but he stays folded over the back of the seat. “This is enough,” he says, a foot between them, Andrew’s broad shoulders holding his shirt taut across them.

“Shouldn’t you be obsessing over the court by now?” Andrew asks, cleanly sidestepping Neil’s attention.

“It is a court,” Neil says, smiling. “It’ll still be there in nine hours.”

“And yet you drag us along three times a day to get your fix.”

“No one asks you to come.”

Andrew gives him a look and Neil huffs, looking at the ceiling like it’ll stop the thrill from showing on his face.

“But I’m glad you do.”

“You’re in a sharing mood today,” Andrew says, like he’s commenting on an unfortunate traffic jam.

Neil reaches out to finger the collar of his shirt, and he feels a hollow jerk go through Andrew when his knuckles brush his neck. “It must be the heat.”

  • What memory would Sam and Dean stick to if they died (like Bobby with his memory of the boys)? Jared mentions the flashbacks in Swan Song and the “I’m proud of us” moment. Jensen says a collection of good moments (bros reuniting, stuff with John, Mary, Bobby, Cas) but also those moments of killing big bads. 
  • What story would you extend/elaborate on? Jared says Demon!Dean and Soulless!Sam. Jensen: Dean in Purgatory.

Jensen: Me too, because if they’re all as cute as you, they’re my favorite. She says her fav monster is a ghost. J2 tell her that if she ever meets one, she should call her friends Sam and Dean. 
  • Fav childhood memory? Jensen: Very happy childhood, lots of good memories. For his fourth birthday he got to ride a horse for the first time. Wore his cowboy vest. Jared: He still has it. 
  • Jared: Now I feel weird about my answer! Broke his arm when he was seven and was in the hospital for a week, got spoiled in the hospital, getting candy, baseball cards…At the time, there was a rare card available where a player had written bad words on the bottom of his bat and the card company only realized it appeared in the image halfway through printing, so everyone was searching for the rare versions that had been printed. Jared’s dad would bring him a pack of baseball cards every day. 
  • If you could create an episode, what would it be. Jared: The world’s most boring episode. The boys doing their laundry. Wants to see Sam and Dean doing behind the scenes stuff.

  • Jensen says that those decisions aren’t up to him. Says if they were the show would have been canceled a long time ago. Jared jokes about how if it was up to J2 they would just cast all of their friends. “Who’s that guy?”
  • Jared: What character would Danneel play? Audience shouts, Baby! Jensen: That could complicate things. Boys want to make a dirty joke but they cut themselves off lol. 
  • Someone in the audience is yelling out Garth. Boys can’t understand what they’re saying. Bunch of fans start yelling Garth, boys finally get it. Jared laughs and says it reminds him of Finding Nemo when the seagulls are saying “mine, mine, mine” over and over. He looked into the crowd and just saw a bunch of people going, “Garth, Garth, Garth” lmao. 
  • Jensen: If Danneel came on the show would you want her to be good or bad? Fan: Good. Jensen: But she plays bad so well. Jared nods. Jensen nods, goes to make a comment and cuts himself off lol. 
  • Fan: How does it feel to have fans like this? Jensen talks about how it took him awhile to really get it. Used to be more in his shell. Now he says it’s fuel for him seeing this kind of devotion. 
  • Jared is amazed at a fan’s incredible SPN body art. Boys are complimenting her on the amazing body art. 
  • Jared says don’t ever think that they think we’re “weird” for being too dedicated to the show. Because they are just as weird as us. Jared: If you’re crazy for spending 24 hours (on fan’s body art) then we’re crazy for spending 13 years. 
  • Fan: Was there a real Trickster, or was the lore about Gabriel? Jared thinks there was no Trickster, that it was just Gabriel hiding. 
  • Jared pronounced gif like jif. Jensen does not approve. Apologizes on his behalf for being silly lol. 
  • Any sport/activity you’ve always wanted to try? Jared mentions cricket, stunt driving courses…Jensen: Stunt driving is not a sport. Jared also mentions motocross. Doesn’t want to get himself hurt. Jensen: Kite surfing. Jensen says it needs to be a place without sharks. Fans: Great Lakes! Jensen: I don’t believe that. They’re in there. Just deep.
  • Funniest moment to film? Jensen: There are moments on a daily basis that make it impossible to film because they’re laughing. They mention the Chupacabra bit. 
  • Apparently Alex (who plays Jack) is like Misha 2.0 in terms of the boys messing with him lol :P J2M messed with Alex so bad the director, Nina Lopez-Corrado, actually kicked them off set. 
  • Jensen once told Jared to not speak in a scene so he didn’t mess around. Jared didn’t say a word and Jensen did his lines alone lol. 
  • Jensen says Jared can never get through telling a whole joke without busting out laughing before the punchline :P
  • Jared tries to make Jensen break during a scene, makes himself laugh and ruins the take even if Jensen is fine. 
  • Fan proposes Dark Angel crossover. Jensen thinks it would be neat, would want to recruit X5s to be on their side.

  • Question is about Adam’s whereabouts. She was a big fan of Adam’s and read a fan theory that maybe he got out of the cage. Jared: Now, to the cool stylings of Jensen Ackles…I think he’s in the cage. Fan joking around: Our half-brother’s in hell, let’s forget about him. Jared: Ehhh, yeah, it’s kinda true. But we do love Jake. 
  • Jared asks for Jensen’s opinion. Jensen, still playing: oooohh, yeaaaaahhhh.

But it also doesn’t take him long to meet sophomore and figure skater Aelin Galathynius. And it doesn’t take him long to realize one thing; he can’t stand her.

Silence. All Aelin could hear was silence.

Well, besides the wind blowing past the car and the other cars on the road. But other then the sounds from the outside world, all she could hear was silence.

Neither she or Aedion spoke as they drove down the road. Aedion simply kept his eyes forward, never glancing over at her once. Even the radio was off, and neither one of them moved to turn it on.

It had been just over a week since Sectionals. Since Aelin skated her two worst skates in years. Also since Aedion had to watch a pregnant Lysandra skate. It had been weeks at that point since Lysandra told him she was pregnant. Since he found out he was going to be a father at eighteen.

So you could see why neither cousin was really in the mood to have a conversation.

Aelin sighed, turning to look out the window.

So, I hear you liked TURN.


Apres the Season 4 finale, I know there’s going to be a lot of crying, and hand-wringing, and rewatching, and these are all good and proper things to do in the wake of a TV show you’ve enjoyed.

But after the smoke clears from all of that, you’re maybe going to go looking for your next 18th century fix, just something in between rewatches or while you’re trying to flesh out your next story idea. (Hey, now that we have our canon, go hog-wild on story ideas, guys, seriously.) 

So I’ve saved you some trouble and made you all a helpful list.

Obviously there are a lot of movies and TV shows out there - this is just a selection that I wish more people knew about.

Note: Everyone enjoys a show or movie for different reasons. These shows are on this list because of the time period they depict, not because of the quality of their writing, the accuracy of their history or the political nature of their content. Where I’m able to, I’ve mentioned if a book is available if you’d like to read more.

Before we get to the rest of the list, there are three excellent shows that are either currently on television or about to be very soon:

Poldark (BBC/PBS) is based on a series of books by an author named Winston Graham. It was made into a PBS series in the 70s starring Robin Ellis as the handsome Captain Poldark, who returns from the American Revolution to find his family farm in tatters and his long-time love interest married to his cousin. Drama ensues. The 70s series is worth your time, and the recent remake with Aidan Turner in the title role is also definitely worth a go. (If you like leading men who make terrible life decisions and the women who put up with them, this is totally your show.)

Harlots (Hulu) - If you really loved the TURN ladies, thought Lola and Philomena deserved more than they got, or are just interested to learn more about what life might have been like for the lower classes in London in the 1750s, have we got a deal for you. Harlots follows the lives of 18th century sex workers in this new drama, which was just recently renewed for a totally deserved second season. Female-lead ensemble drama. A little violent at points and deals with some pretty heavy-duty topics like rape, murder, and bastardy, but in a humane and understanding way. Totally bingeable.

Outlander (Starz) - Based on the wildly popular series of books by Diana Gabaldon, this time traveling drama jumps between a couple of different centuries and follows the story of Jamie and Claire, two very strong personalities trying to literally find their place in history. (Hewlett talks about the blade his grandfather picked up at Culloden; that battle forms a critical part of this show’s storyline.) It’s a real pretty show with very high production values.

And, without further ado, the rest of the list!

John Adams:  If you haven’t watched this already, do yourself a favor and go pick it up from the library. Starring Paul Giametti in the title role, this HBO miniseries follows John Adams’ role in the formation of America, through his early days in Congress up through his own presidency. As with any biographical show, characters that we know and love from other media (Rufus Sewell’s Hamilton comes to mind, but see what you think of David Morse’s Washington, too) are presented in a slightly different light and provide some food for thought about how history can be selective in how it remembers us. The costuming is great, the sets are fantastic, and the acting is first-rate.

The Patriot: An oldie but a goodie. Mel Gibson plays a highly fictionalized version of Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox while Jason Isaacs turns in a really stellar hottie we love to hate in Colonel Tavington. A little heavy-handed at times, this is a good movie to laugh over with friends.

Sons of Liberty: I’ll be really honest - for a show from the History Channel, the history on this show is pretty awful. But the cast is pretty. This one’s up to you, really. It fills a hole.

Garrow’s Law: William Garrow was a barrister and a pioneering legal mind in the 18th century, and this show (which ran for 3 seasons) is based on real Old Bailey cases and Garrow’s defenses, while also working in his fraught social life. Were you interested in learning a little more about Abe Woodhull’s erstwhile legal training? This is the show for you.

City of Vice: A miniseries that explains the origins and work of the Bow Street Runners, one of London’s first police forces.  Does a great job of opening up some of the early 18th century underside of London including a smidge of 18th century gay culture.

A Harlot’s Progress: William Hogarth was an 18th century artist, printmaker and social commentator whose “A Harlot’s Progress” famously depicts the downfall of a woman who goes into prostitution. This 2006 series explores the relationship that inspired the ‘Harlot’ piece.

The Incredible Journey of Mary Bryant: At around the same time America was busy trying to figure itself out, halfway around the world another one of Britain’s colonial possessions - Australia - was just getting started. Hundreds of convicts found themselves stuffed in ships and sent to the other side of the world - a sentence deemed almost more humane. This 2005 series with Romala Garai follows a very famous convict, Mary Bryant, and her experiences.

Banished: Another take on penal colonies in Australia. Currently available on Hulu.

Black Sails: A more recent offering from Starz, this show explores the backstory of the pirates in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. Lots of great representation issues, a whole lot of ‘how does your story get told’ - and there’s a real big community on Tumblr who loves it and very actively produces all kinds of fic.

Clarissa - Simcoe fans, this one is totally for you. Based on the epistolary novel by Samuel Richardson, Clarissa follows a girl of the same name as the infamous rake Lovelace tries to seduce her. Another look at what how women can be corrupted. Also, for you fandom nerds in the crowd, Lovelace was one of the first characters to inspire fix-it fic. Yes, really! Fix-it fic in the late 1700s. Lovelace is one of the original men for whom the ‘No, really, I can reform him’ trope was created. (Richardson, his creator, was so horrified by this reaction by his fans that he actually revised the book several times to try and make Lovelace even more villainous and irredeemable, with little success. Then as now, women apparently love the idea of a bad boy.)

Amazing Grace - The history of slavery in England and its colonies is complicated and nuanced; this story deals with one of the more famous names from that story, William Wilberforce, and his contribution.

Belle - Based on the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, the mixed race daughter of a Royal Navy Admiral. Another look at racial politics in England.

The Aristocrats - One of my all-time favorite TV miniseries and based on the nonfiction book by Stella Tilyard, this show follows the (actual, nonfictional) Lennox sisters, daughters of the Duke of Richmond as they grow up, marry, and adjust to rapid social change from the early 1700s into the 1790s.

The Duchess  - About the same time the Lennox sisters were out in society, so was Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire. This is based on (I’m not sure how closely) Amanda Foreman’s biography of Georgiana, one of the leading ladies of her day.

Dangerous Liasons - Another story about corruptible young women, this one has 3 very well deserved Oscars to its name and an absolutely stunning Glenn Close.

Barry Lyndon - a very evocative, sumptuous film by Stanley Kubrick. Short on action, but very, very Aesthetic, as only Kubrick can do.

The Scarlet Pimpernel - Based on the book by Baroness Orczy, The Scarlet Pimpernel is largely considered to be one of the world’s first ‘superhero with a secret identity’ stories. Sir Percy Blakeney uses his identity as a dim-witted fop to provide cover for his activities rescuing French aristocrats from the guillotine during the French Revolution. The 1982 version with Anthony Andrews and the 1999 version with Richard Grant are both a lot of fun.

Speaking of the French, where would we be without them? Our small domestic dust-up with Britain has far-reaching international consequences, setting in motion so many other social movements in Europe. The French, for instance, will have their own revolution several years after ours, which, of course, will lead to a total political shakeup ending with an artillery officer named Napoleon Bonaparte on the throne as Emperor. (You may have heard of him. He goes on to have his own series of large wars and, you know, completely changes the geo-political landscape of Europe. Like you do.)

La Revolution Francaise, filmed for the 200th anniversary of the Revolution, is available on YouTube in it’s entirety with English subtitles! Starts in 1774 and goes through the 1800s. C’est merveilleux.

Marie Antoinette - Sofia Coppola’s wild, modern romp through the life of one of the 18th century’s most notorious women. It may not be great history, but darn me if it isn’t fun to watch.

Farewell, My Queen - Another story about Marie Antoinette - this one is in French.

Nicolas Le Floch: An 18th century crime procedural set at the court of Louis XVI. The whole show is in French, so watch with subtitles, but the costumes are a lot of fun and it gives an interesting picture of the life a character like Lafayette would have left behind when he came to America. (He gets name dropped a few times, actually, though he never actually appears.)

Ekaterina: A 2014 miniseries from Russia discussing the rise of Catherine the Great, the Empress of Russia from 1762 to 1796, contemporaneous to the Revolution. The 18th century is a fascinating time in Russian history and Catherine is a really, really interesting lady. Totally go and read about her.

Anno 1790: A Swedish crime procedural set in 1790s Sweden and following Johann Däadh, a doctor recently roped into the police force. Däadh is a bit of a reformer, interested in the rights of man and giving everyone a chance to be heard. Costumes are fun, and there’s a really great slow-burn romance between two of the characters, one of whom is (gasp) married. This show only ran for one season, but it was a really, really good season.

If you’re still jonesing for period dramas after the rest of this list, here’s a lot of shows and tv series set during the Napoleonic Wars that are also totally worth your time - the Richard Sharpe miniseries, the Horatio Hornblower miniseries, the BBC’s War and Peace, Master and Commander, and then, of course, anything based on a Jane Austen novel.

After reading Just Hold On I was wondering what your thoughts are on Victor never calling Yuuri after the banquet in canon? If it was reversed like in your fic I would understand it since Yuuri is so insecure and harsh on himself but there wasn't really a reason for Victor not to call Yuuri again? Do you think he was scared of rejection? Do you think he assumed Yuuri didn't want him, hence making the Eros routine about the seducer throwing his lover away after a one night stand?

Hi, Nonny, I seriously doubt you wanted a whole character/motivation analysis in response to this question, but… I’m a perfectionist and obsessed with YOI, so here you go. Also, thanks so much for reading and enjoying my fic.

Upon initial viewing of YOI, I definitely thought the banquet reveal was cool as a narrative twist, but also somewhat unrealistic. You’re telling me Viktor Nikiforov, international superstar and sap, didn’t have the resources or motivation to find Katsuki Yuuri and confess his undying love?

WHOO BOY, here we go. I think Viktor not contacting Yuuri after the banquet is actually justified, which I’ll summarize:

1. Viktor is a romantic optimist

2. Both Viktor and Yuuri view themselves as ‘the pursued’ and not ‘the pursuer’ in the Eros story

3. Rejection is possibly the most immense vulnerability Viktor has

1.      Viktor is a romantic optimist

This has been heavily discussed on Tumblr, but I’m going to throw in my two cents. Let’s discuss Eros and Agape: Viktor’s two possible programs for the next season. Assuming these are about Yuuri, I’m going to propose a weird idea that this means Viktor has prepared two plans: one for if Yuuri contacts him before next season, and one for if he doesn’t.

Plan A, Agape: Yuuri contacts Viktor. Viktor skates to a program about unconditional love. In the show they talk about Agape like it’s about someone who ‘doesn’t know what love is yet.’ The someone is Viktor, and I could easily see this as his program for a season where he’s just started to experience Life and Love in a relationship with Yuuri.

Plan B, Eros: Yuuri doesn’t contact Viktor. Viktor skates to a program that seduces the entire world’s pants off. He would’ve dominated every competition, and won a mountain of gold medals; basically, he’d seduce Yuuri until the other man came back.

Note that there are only two plans here: start to experience unconditional love with Yuuri, or seduce the crap out of him until returns to Viktor. There is no third plan titled ‘Viktor Nikiforov Moves On.’ It’s get Katsuki Yuuri or bust, because Viktor is a romantic optimist.

Naturally, Yuuri throws a surprise wrench in all of Viktor’s plans by not making it to Worlds and breaking it off with Celestino, and then moving back to Hasetsu. Suddenly, Yuuri’s not his competitor; he needs a coach, just like he told Viktor in Sochi.

Even if you don’t agree with my particular strange interpretation, we know that Viktor is a romantic optimist because he fell in love with a drunkard over the course of a night and proceeded to move his entire life halfway across the world for him. All Yuuri had to do was make a romantic gesture with that viral video, from Viktor’s POV, and Viktor shoved his apartment into boxes and left Russia so fast Yakov got whiplash from watching him go.

Viktor wants that love story, but he approaches it in a roundabout way. Viktor is probably a tiny bit socially inept (again, there’s a lot of Tumblr discourse on this so I’m not going to go into it) from being a skating celebrity rather than an average human being, and he also loves grand gestures. Expressing his love through skating is THE WAY TO GO, right?? SURELY Yuuri will GET IT?

So why didn’t he just call Yuuri up, rather than waiting? What I wrote above probably contributed to his decision not to contact Yuuri, but the main reason he didn’t lies more in points two and three; I just had to establish Viktor as a romantic optimist.

2.      Both Viktor and Yuuri view themselves as ‘the pursued’ and not ‘the pursuer’ in the Eros story

Firstly, we can all appreciate that Viktuuri is a relationship which doesn’t rely on negative queer stereotypes of one person dominating the relationship, or on traditional gender roles. Viktor and Yuuri take the lead in different aspects of their relationship, and it’s incredibly healthy.

That being said, we all know that Yuuri views himself as the abandoned beautiful woman in the story of Eros… but we discover in episode 10 that Viktor also identifies that way. God, I love this show.

As far as Viktor knows, Yuuri is this unstoppable force who can royally screw up the GPF and then give Viktor the most magical, fun night the very next day. Yuuri is someone who blows Japanese nationals, loses his coach, and responds by virally owning the frickin program that holds the World Record in an extremely public and romantic display. Meanwhile, Yuuri thinks he’s an anxious, mediocre skater. In Yuuri’s head, he is the beautiful woman who initially rejects the playboy because she knows he’s going to leave her; in Viktor’s head Yuuri is the playboy who wrecks hearts and whole towns just by showing up.

Comparing their views is hilarious. Yuuri thinks Viktor is a playboy, untouchable and bound to leave him. Viktor thinks Yuuri is a playboy that’s already wooed and subsequently rejected him, which I’ll dive into in the next section. When Yuuri says he’s underconfident, that he can’t skate Eros, and panics at competitions, Viktor’s initial response is just ????????? But you are this whirlwind force of nature???? Everyone loves you????? How do I help you?????

Frankly, Viktor’s view of Yuuri doesn’t allow him to understand that this man, who seems so bold and capable of pursuing what he wants, is restricted both by his anxiety and also his lack of knowledge about the banquet. Yuuri isn’t calling Viktor? Well, Viktor’s easy to find—he’s a major presence. If Yuuri wanted him, he’d come and get him, and that’s Viktor initial conceptualization of the situation. Yuuri’s not pursuing Viktor, so he must not want him.

Another recent discourse on Tumblr I’ve seen is the idea that it’s Yuuri’s fantasy to be pursued. He wants to be attractive and irresistible and catch Viktor’s attention; of course, he simultaneously thinks he’s too average to ever do so. Yuuri thinks he’s been chasing Viktor his whole life and will never catch up; he wants to be the one chased in the end. On the flip side, Viktor is the first one to pursue: he approaches a drunk Yuuri, he takes pictures, he starts to dance with him. He likes him.

But his crush is cemented when Yuuri demands and commands his attention, essentially pursuing him. Viktor likes to be desired, likes to skate for an audience, probably is turned on by the idea that Yuuri is his fan and has always wanted him. We all know he’s the jealous type (ahem: Chihoko) and needs Yuuri’s attention in return.

Basically: both of them are Extra, and after the banquet Viktor thinks it is Yuuri’s place to pursue, wants Yuuri to pursue him, sees himself as hopelessly and attracted and wants Yuuri to signal that he likes him in return. When the viral video comes out, both of them hilariously still think the other is ‘the pursuer,’ because in Yuuri’s POV Viktor just shows up and announces his position as coach, whereas in Viktor’s POV Yuuri has (finally) put out the siren call that Viktor has been waiting for. Both of them are helplessly crushing on each other in a miscommunication of epic proportions.

Anyway. The idea of Viktor wanting to be pursued, and feeling like he’s the abandoned ‘beautiful woman’ so he doesn’t call Yuuri, leads straight into what I think is the greatest motivator for Viktor lack of contact: rejection.

3.      Rejection is Viktor’s vulnerability

Viktor is a man whose entire life, from the time he was a teenager, has been based off of seeking people’s approval. Which people? Everyone: judges, the ISU, probably his parents, Yakov, the media, the frickin whole of Russia. Viktor’s career and his existence mostly relies on approval; we all know he fears becoming someone unable to surprise, someone unable to win and gain approval from those around him. Viktor dances around the things he really wants—there’s been so much Tumblr discourse about this that I’m just going to point out the ocean scene vaguely. Rather than straight-up telling Yuuri that he wants to be his boyfriend, he proposes it flippantly and as an open question. This is how you try to avoid rejection, friends.

Anyway, going back to the main point.

This is something that I haven’t seen discussed a lot, but you have to remember that Viktor and Yuuri’s actual first interaction was Yuuri rejecting him and walking away. It’s not unreasonable for Viktor to think Yuuri is going to reject him: Yuuri does it multiple times throughout the show, though it’s likely never for the reasons Viktor thinks it is. Viktor does not cope well with rejection. He goes and gets drunkenly smashed every time he’s rejected in the show (this is more popular Tumblr discourse, so I’m not going to get into it here).

If you think Viktor has never met a fan in real-life and disappointed them before or failed to meet their expectations, you are dead wrong. He’s been an international celebrity for… what, 10 years? I’m sure at least one person, probably multiple, have rejected him upon actually meeting him because he wasn’t what they envisioned. Yuuri is a fan, and Viktor is a superstar, and while we may think it’s on Viktor to reach out and express his interest because he’s a celebrity, it’s also on Yuuri to express that he is interested in the real Viktor, the guy he danced with at the banquet.

If Viktor contacts Yuuri and is rejected—by the first person that’s really made him feel inspired and excited in the longest time—it’s all over, and in a heartbreaking way. Viktor likes to hold onto hope (optimist!), and is terrified of rejection. Note that the second Yuuri “contacts him” with the video, and seems to accept and reciprocate Viktor’s feelings, Viktor has zero reservations about going to him. Of course, when he gets there Yuuri basically rebuffs him, which is why he cries and gets savagely aggravated in the first few episodes. Alas, Viktor is still a romantic optimist (see part 1) so he sticks around and tries to feel Yuuri out. You like me, right? Look, I am sexy and I can make all your dreams come true, look at me, please don’t reject me?

Even the fact that Viktor shows up and immediately frames himself as Yuuri’s coach, something Yuuri clearly needs, asked for, and is less likely to reject, something Viktor feels qualified for, is very telling. Rather than saying I’ve been in love with you since the banquet, I’m here to give this a shot it’s I’m going to be your coach!

Just because Viktor doesn’t have anxiety doesn’t make him any less prone to fear of rejection. Fear of rejection is a human thing that we all experience. So… he doesn’t call.

One of my favorite things about their relationship is the way Yuuri handles this fear, and essentially says: I’m not going to reject you if you’re not exactly who I want you to be. You, yourself, are what I want: just be real with me.

 Yuri on Ice is a beautiful thing.

To conclude this very long rant, I’ll relate this back to my fic quickly (spoiler alert, by the way) and just say the way JHO (WGH) flips this and makes it… more angsty, rather than what happened for canon Viktor, is by relying on:

·        Yuuri is an anxious pessimist. Yuuri worries that Viktor will leave him, that this time will be just like the banquet, which is completely understandable. Viktor is a superstar and, in Yuuri’s head, he is a nobody that served as Viktor’s drunken fling for a night.

·        Yakov serving as the matchmaker, rather than Viktor calling for Yuuri. Unlike canon, Yuuri has no indication that Viktor wants him in Russia, has no idea that Yuuri is literally there for Viktor (well, not just for him, clearly he is a great skater, but that’s a major reason why Yakov took Yuuri on). This only fuels his anxiety and pessimism further.

 Basically, I write angsty fluff and overthink things. Also all of this is conjecture, so please don’t hate me.

It’s hot the way only New Jersey gets hot, America’s swampy asshole, thick damp air under an impermeable layer of smog, the sun mocking him from where it hangs between a few grey clouds that indicate but don’t promise an upcoming rain.

Neil’s jog is taking much, much longer than usual thanks to an unbearable amount of traffic. It doesn’t help that he’s had to reroute himself to get some British candy bar from the one Wawa that—without explanation—carries British candy bars.

He gets there eventually, eight miles away from his apartment and so fully dehydrated that he’s questioning how the fuck he’s going to make it back. Wawa is, as always, an oasis: refrigerators line the walls, and within them, blissfully, is cold water. He grabs a bottle and drinks half of it in the aisle before even going on the search for the Mars Bar.

The candy aisle has nothing, just mostly-depleted cardboard boxes of Snickers and Twix. The international section is mainly Latin American and Asian goods, and then, crammed between coconut water and Goya goods, a box of Mars Bars.

Like the boxes in the candy aisle, it’s empty.

so i’ve seen a lot of talk recently (from myself included) about all the plotlines being explored in s4, which ones are getting more or less time, and sana not getting enough focus- so i wanted to take some time and separate the show from the fandom and the social media content and really see what’s getting the main focus, specifically looking at the screen time dedicated to each plotline 

i feel like since we all want to know like everything that's going on with every character and have created so many theories, small details really stand out and get cycled around the fandom a lot so they feel like the biggest deal (which i mostly love) but like i said i’m putting all that aside and this is only going to be what’s shown in the show itself because while the youtube channel and text messages and everything add so much it really all comes down to what’s actually on air

so i’m gonna split this up into what i think are the main plotlines we’ve been following (of course some of these overlap and i’ll account for that) and this is only a little over halfway through episode 4 (posted before the last clip) and i’ve rounded a bit just for sanity’s sake 

  • Sana’s personal conflicts and storylines
    • Russebuss/ Islam and Norwegian Identity (including her performing Salah): 34 minutes
    • Yousef: 22 minutes
    • Relationship with family: 15 minutes
  • Noora and her past/relationship with William: 16 minutes
  • Vilde and her relationship with Magnus: 5:30 minutes 
  • Evak and Even’s connection to Sana/Mikael: 6:30 minutes

0% Jack Zimmermann.

  • There’s a cookout at a neighboring frat house, and the hockey team plus Farmer go to hang out and drink beer. They start playing an impromptu game of volleyball in the yard, and Jack’s on Chowder’s team.
  • Now, Chowder is steeling himself for strategy, Jack’s murder face, and a lot of competitive bullshit.
  • What he gets is Jack chirping Holster, who isn’t even in the yard. The ball goes flying right past Jack’s face and this total meatball just watches it bounce out of bounds.
  • “Ha ha, look at it go.”
  • Chowder kicks Jack off his team because they are losing so bad, it’s actually pretty embarrassing. And Jack’s like, “What? Of course I can play with a Sprite in my hand.”
  • “Jack no.”
  • Also consider:
  • Jack studying for a class that he has zero interest in. His studying for economics looks an awful lot like amateur architecture.
  • “Jack, why is there a popsicle stick Eiffel Tower on the kitchen table? Wait, where did these popsicle sticks even come from?”
  • Jack actually gives negative fucks when it comes to cooking just for himself. His meals don’t even make sense half of the time. Bitty caught him eating a bowl of mac and cheese, tater tots, green peas and ketchup once. He still has nightmares.
  • There’s another cookout on Frat row that the hockey team crashes (but they bring tub juice so they get to stay). Someone set up a badminton net in the yard and Jack somehow gets roped into playing.
  • (Not by Chowder, though, because that’s the kind of lesson you only have to learn once.)
  • Bitty is playing his little Southern heart out, running up and down his side of the makeshift court. He swings at the birdie so hard it actually gets stuck in his racket.
  • Meanwhile, Jack is seeing if he can balance his racket on his chin.
  • And then he tries to see if he can whack the birdie onto the frat house’s roof. Which turns into several people cussing him out and Bitty chases him around for a few minutes with the intent of beating Jack Zimmermann’s ass.
  • (Jack laughs and laughs and maybe he lets Bitty catch him and then he grins up at him—there had been a leaping tackle involved in the take down—and he says “What’re you gonna do with me now, Bittle?” And Bitty is Not Amused, so he pinches Jack’s nipple hard and then he goes help the frat bros get the birdie out of the gutter.)
  • Jack loves history, but only some history. He gives a lengthy presentation on Colonial North America in one of his history classes, and at the end the TA raises her hand. “How did Thomas Jefferson’s contributions shift the course of United States history?”
  • And he just squints at her and goes, “Who the fuck is Thomas Jefferson?”
  • Watching TV with Jack is a gamble. He’s either on the edge of his seat, eyes trained on the screen, ready to permanently silence anyone who dares speak/interrupt his show. Or he talks over the TV, puts it on mute to better hear someone else talk over the TV, and makes fun of the various American accents on the show.
  • (Jack’s southern accent is so bad and he knows it, and he makes it so much worse when Bitty is around to hear it. It’s all fun and games until a French Canadian on TV has something to say, and then Jack’s all like “Wtf, Bitty? I thought we were friends!?” Bitty is really glad he sprung for throw pillows in the Haus, because otherwise he would end up concussing his captain.)
  • Jack took one semester of Spanish, and he remembers a surprising amount of it, considering he went to class a total of six times and did virtually none of the work. His Spanish is terrible, but he knows numbers, colors, seasons and “No bueno.” For some time, lots of things were “no bueno.”
  • But then Jack stumbled across ASL via YouTube and he gets super into it. By the end of the week he knows about as much ASL as he does Spanish. By the end of the month he can sign the most beautiful profanity and dad jokes. By the end of the school year it’s started rubbing off on the rest of the team.
  • (Their butchered ASL is somehow worse than Jack’s Spanish, and he would be more annoyed if it weren’t hilarious. For some time Ransom and Holster take to pointing at good things and then making the sign for “candy.” Sriracha? Candy. Apple pie? Candy. The mysterious orange cat that wanders along Frat Row? Candy. Chowder’s stuffed shark? Candy. The latest episode of Breaking Bad? Candy. Pretty soon everyone starts using the candy sign as a gesture of approval. One Sunday Jack walks down to the kitchen to find Bitty making those amazing sausage balls, with real maple syrup and grated sharp cheddar. Jack touches his shoulder so that Bitty’s looking at him and then he presses a finger to his jaw, candy, and points to Bitty so there’s no misunderstanding. Bitty blushes clear to the roots of his hair, even when he says, “Y’all are so weird.”)
  • This takes us to a new friend. Ransom and Holster and Jack and Chowder are chilling in the dining hall, and Ransom and Holster are using their terrible pidgin ASL (half the signs are made up and the rest don’t matter) which catches the eye of one Amy Willashire, who is HOH and still pretty new to Samwell.
  • Amy marches her happy ass up to the table and starts signing away, a mile a minute, the biggest grin on her face because sometimes it feels like she’s the only HOH student on campus. That grin slowly fades as Ransom and Holster stare at her like she’s grown a second head. (They’re actually panicking, because they understand about one word in ten and how are they going to tell her that?)
  • And then Jack perks up and starts signing back, so Amy is signing to him. He has to tell her twice to slow tf down, but then she sits with them and by the time the hockey crew have to go to class she’s chirping Jack for his ASL accent. (Some of his signs come out backwards, and he’ll swap hands halfway through a thought instead of using his dominant hand for most of the work. Jack flips her off with a laugh, which is a sign everyone can get right.)
  • So Jack and Amy are ASL buddies. Amy is super stoked that most of the hockey team knows at least some of the language, which means she can tell them something in a pinch. So the team learns even more ASL and Amy learns about hockey, and things are golden.
  • Until Amy invites Jack and Dex to a pool party. Everyone there is at least one beer in, and they’re playing in the pool, and someone mentions water chicken. Amy wants to play, so as a matter of course she clambers onto Jack’s shoulders.
  • From her vantage point, she can’t tell what Jack’s saying but she can feel him giggling like a bastard as they wipe out literally every time, to the point where everyone else is playing pool chicken and she is trying to splash Jack into next week. He’s splashing back. It’s a whole thing.
  • (They find Dex in the basement with a few of the stoners and a lingering smell of pot. Dex has finally found his chill.)
  • That is what 0% Jack Zimmermann looks like.

Once Upon a Time: What happens if you combines amazingly rich and iconic characters with incredibly talented and charming actors and with horrible writers

Carmilla: Tiny curious gay hobbit falls for an useless broody lesbian vampire

Community: An accurate representation of college

IZombie: A sarcastic tiny zombie solves crimes by eating the brains of murder victims and absorbing their memories and personalities. Also has shirtless Arthur. if you have loved Veronica Mars you will adore this

Leverage: Hardened criminals look at how fucked up our society is and go “ Holy shit come on’ and start fighting for the people by taking down corporations and other assholes

Sorry for how long this took, hope it’s ok!

Andrew had been sitting at the terminal waiting for his twice delayed flight for the past five hours. To say he was irritated would be putting it mildly. 

Five hours of constant, simmering anxiety was pushing the bounds of what Andrew was going to allow. If the plane didn’t leave in the next half hour, the Florida captain and his offer could go fuck themselves. It wasn’t worth this.

The idiotic part of his brain was wishing Neil was here. 

Neil had a way of grounding Andrew when they had to fly, giving him something to hold on to, to distract from the animal part of his brain that dissolved into panic and fear. 

Bee would tell him it was good to form small dependencies, to live in a reciprocal relationship of trust and care, to allow another person to be a source of comfort. She would say that Andrew had given Neil protection against those who sought to do them harm, that he gave Neil the comfort and security of their house in Colombia. She would say that he should let Neil give him comfort and security when they had to catch a stupid plane.

The part of Andrew that had offered Neil those keys all those years ago, who’d made him promises he would die keeping, wanted to believe that he deserved to allow someone to give him that security and comfort. That it was ok to want that from Neil.

He thought he almost believed it.

Regardless, Neil wasn’t here.

Neil was still in his last year at Palmetto, and they were two weeks out of the start of the season. He couldn’t afford to come with Andrew to Florida for the weekend while he heard their team’s offer. 

Andrew had wanted to stay closer to Palmetto. The teams there wouldn’t offer nearly as much as the Florida team had, and they certainly weren’t of the same professional calibre, but Andrew didn’t give a fuck about any of that. He wanted to stay close to Palmetto because Neil had a tendency to find trouble, and someone had to watch his dumb ass. That person was supposed to be Andrew.

“You have to go, Andrew. Florida is one of the best teams in the league,” Neil had said to him, when he’d first received the letter.

“I pity you if you think I give a single shit about that.”

Neil looked like he wanted to roll his eyes, but wisely didn’t. “I’ll be fine,” he said instead.

Andrew narrowly avoided scowling. “One day I’m going to tattoo that onto your face so I don’t have to hear those words come out of your stupid mouth again.”

Neil had smirked. “Go to Florida, Andrew. This is the best chance we’ve got.”

He didn’t say it was the best chance for them to be in the same team next year. Florida was one of the top teams in the league, and the salaries they offered reflected that. They would be good enough for Ichirou, and though Neil was avoiding thinking about that at all costs, that was something he was going to have to consider when the pro offers came rolling in. 

Florida was close that Andrew could visit occasionally, and good enough that Neil could follow him there. Those were the important things.

So, the airport was where Andrew now found himself.

When the boarding call for his flight finally came over the speakers, Andrew buried the instinctual urge to run deep down. 

He was spending far too much time with Neil.

He joined the end of the queue of passengers waiting for the air hostess to scan their tickets. It wasn’t a busy flight, for which Andrew was quietly relieved. He scanned the faces of the people in the crowd, but saw no threat among them. Just a sea of boring no-bodies as irritated with the delay as he was.

He was nearly at the front of the queue when his phone starting ringing in his pocket. He was tempted to ignore it, but he recognised Neil’s ringtone. He stepped out of the line, ignoring the frown of the air hostess who clearly had no intention of waiting for him, and answered it.

“What?”

“Andrew?”

Andrew froze. That wasn’t Neil’s voice.

“What the fuck is wrong, Kevin?”

“It’s Neil,” Kevin said. “Andrew, he’s in the hospital.”

Outlander: Here's When the Infamous Print Shop Scene Is Coming

If you’re an Outlander fan who has not read the books, do you sometimes feel like book readers are perhaps speaking a different language? Talking about things like the headstone, Mr. Willoughby, and the famous “print shop scene”? If you’re particularly curious about that last one, we’re here to help with a primer for this heart-stopping moment. Be warned: there are light book spoilers ahead

In Voyager, the third book in Diana Gabaldon’s series upon which the Starz drama is based, the print shop scene happens about a third of the way through the novel. In it, Claire has traveled back to Scotland (not a spoiler, we all knew that was coming) and is quite nervous about seeing Jamie again after 20 years. In fact, prior to leaving 1968, Claire asks her former medical school classmate and now-colleague Joe Abernathy if she is still sexually attractive.

“I haven’t seen [Jamie] in 20 years. You’re the only person I know who’s known me for a long time; have I changed terribly since we met?” Claire asks Joe.

Joe assures her that it’ll be like going to a high school reunion. “You see they’ve got some gray, and some lines, and maybe they aren’t just the same as they were, but two minutes past that shock, and you don’t see it anymore. They’re just the same people they always were,” he tells Claire.

Actress Caitriona Balfe sat down for a group interview at the 2017 Summer TCA, where she explained that at first she was against Claire being so insecure, but she came to really like that aspect of the character.

“I think it ends up being quite a sweet thing to do because … it’s boring to play someone as strong and positive all the time. It gives her a vulnerability that I think ends up playing very well,” said Balfe. “At the end of the day, we all worry on some level about how we look and how somebody sees us and she’s worried about meeting the man that she loved so much again after 20 years and it’s not just, ‘Is he going to love me again?’ but, 'Will he actually find he attractive again?’ which I think is a valid point to play.”

So Claire pushes past her insecurities because, hey — it’s Jamie (!), and they’re about to be reunited. When Claire enters his Edinburgh print shop, Jamie is so stunned at seeing her (and that she’s real, not a hallucination or a dream) that he faints dead away.

It’s a lovely scene, definitely worthy of a epic romantic reunion between two meant-to-be lovers. And the show version does not disappoint, especially because it doesn’t solely explore the scene from Claire’s point of view. It also gives us some insight into Jamie’s life and his perspective on seeing Claire again.

We can’t tell you exactly when it happens, but we can tease for you that you don’t have to wait too much longer. Showrunner Ron Moore revealed this Summer at the TCA that the big Jamie-Claire reunion is at least five episodes in, “almost halfway through the season,” which is 13 episodes long.

Not only that, but if you think the print shop scene is great, hold on for the scene where Claire and Jamie spend the night in his room together getting to know one another again.

No specifics, but executive producer Maril Davis has teased a few juicy details for us. Davis said they are “so proud” of that episode because they spend “a luxurious amount of time” with that scene.

“We wanted to have it not be the classic romance-novel moment,” added Balfe. “We wanted to play with it in terms of that they’re like two teenagers again, to do some kind of mirroring to the wedding episode, where even though they’ve never forgotten about each other, they don’t really know each other, so there’s definitely a process of discovery and they’re not quite sure what to do with their bodies or their words. I think that lends a realism to it.”

“It’s kind of our love letter to the fans,” said Davis.

I've read about vld showrunners saying they might add LGBT content in the show, do you think this means that Sheith relationship in first 3 seasons is supposed to be percieved as platonic (that might as well turn into romantic if they decide to go down that road), since it was something they've considered only after making these seasons? I ship Sheith with all my heart, but sometimes i'm afraid of getting my hopes up.

Well, to be honest, I’m not sure what you mean by “since it was something they’ve considered only after making these seasons”?? Because lgbt representation is a conversation they have been having since the start. In fact, if we get any lgbt rep at all, it’s been implied that that’s been planned since season 1. 

My understanding is that the writers were unsure for a little while if Netflix would renew Voltron or not (which is why the ending for season 1 feels really abrupt and cut off, because they suddenly realized they would get a season 2 and didn’t have to give 1 a “softer ending”) but anYWAY, for a bit it seems they were unsure. And after they got the green light, they had to wait a bit before they could publicly confirm it. So, with that in mind:

In an interview right around when Voltron first started airing, Lauren and Joaquim mentioned how they both loved the korrasami ending and were happy to be part of it. When asked if Voltron would ever “take that step,” Lauren said, “we have those first 13 episodes and if we ever went beyond that, we would like to push the envelope” which to me says that if there was any representation they planned to carry through with, then they’ve already started building the groundwork for that from the very beginning. Again, to me that says the most viable candidate for a gay relationship is Shiro and Keith, given how intimately close they’re portrayed as from the very beginning. Not to mention how the season starts with Keith running in to save Shiro like his knight in shining armor and ends with Shiro returning the favor. Plus all those other times they comfort each other and trust in one another and just–ya. If sheith was going to happen, they knew what they were doing and 100% planned it from the beginning. 

And the thing is, the more questions like this I get the more I’m kind of curious if most people just aren’t aware of how animation works because?? Major plot points won’t get changed out of nowhere, an entire character arc for next season won’t just be rewritten. All the content for the rest of the series is probably well written out and a good portion of it already animated; animation takes lots of time, you have to do so much work in advance. If they were going to put lgbt representation in, it’s already been planned and written a long time ago. 

When asked about ships, the show runners themselves actually talked about this. Because someone wanted to know if Lance and Keith would be “teased” because of how many people ship it, but that’s simply not the case. Lauren said “We’re not trying to cater to or bait anyone into anything. We’re just trying to do what’s right for the story.” And Joaquim followed with, “We also try not to be overtly affected by what popular opinion might be.” 

Lauren goes on to say, “And we’re working in animation. Our schedule is so far in advance for that, even if people shipped Keith and Lance, we couldn’t go back and just change the story! And be like–and now they’re in love.” (source here)

In short–if we get lgbt representation, it’s because it’s what the writers originally intended and was probably drafted out when they first pitched the TV Bible. Not because they suddenly decided halfway through season 3 that adding it in would please fans. And honestly, I feel a lot more comfortable about that. Because you know it’s not something that just got shoehorned in and was an intentional part of the narrative that the writers are invested in. 

Which is again why, if anything, sheith makes the most sense to me, as that’s the dynamic that’s been by far the most fleshed out and well developed. It just feels like if any relationship was built up as something romantic, sheith already has all the groundwork in place there

YOI re-do AU where all 6 of the Barcelona GPF skaters and their coaches are sent back to just after the Sochi GPF medal ceremony.

Phichit is at his apartment in Detroit, snuggled down in a nest of blankets on Yuuri’s bed and prowling all his social media accounts, tearing apart anyone who says anything bad about his best friend’s performance. That’s when he feels a strike of blinding pain to the base of his skull, as if he’s been struck by lightning. His eyes roll back into his head and he faints. And when he wakes up with a startled gasp about ten minutes later, he looks around in confusion, wondering why he’s not back in his parents’ home in Bangkok.

Otabek is back at his home rink in Almaty. After failing to qualify for the Finals, he and his coach had decided it would be a good change of pace to return to his own country, and he’s working feverishly so that he can do well in his country’s Nationals and make a comeback at Worlds. He’s in the middle of practicing a step sequence when he feels the blinding pain of his memories coming back, and he falls to the ice with a dull thump. A cry of alarm goes up from his rinkmates as they skate over to see if he’s okay. His coach’s accompanying thump from the rinkside makes the skaters panic even more as they go over to see what’s going on.

The other four, luckily, are already in their hotel rooms when it happens, getting ready for the banquet.

Yuuri was grabbing a quick nap at the time, so he’s lucky enough to not feel the pain of his memories returning, but he’s startled awake when Celestino comes barging into his hotel room.

(Yuuri always makes sure Celestino has a copy of his room key, in case he has an anxiety attack or doesn’t want to leave his room before a competition.)

Celestino’s expression is frantic when it lands on a confused Yuuri, who’s trying to process all the memories flooding through him.

They both immediately know the other has also gotten the memories, and Celestino sweeps Yuuri into a crushing hug. He’d been so worried about his fragile-hearted skater after his mess of a performance, and he’s just so relieved now to know that Yuuri will continue skating, even if he does eventually leave Celestino’s rink.

Yuuri is shy as he requests Celestino to keep coaching him until the end of the season - this time, he plans to pick himself up and do better at Nationals, so that he can qualify for Worlds. He wants to show the world what an amazing coach Celestino had been, and that Viktor wasn’t the only one responsible for turning Yuuri into the skater he is today.
