in the history of the planet

And you know what? Along those lines: I love Star Trek because it has always felt plausible to me. In my mind, it’s entirely possible that first contact will happen in 2063, that the United Federation of Planets will form in 2161. And even though on a conscious level I know these things won’t happen, it feels to me as if they could. Because Star Trek talks about Earth’s history. It doesn’t sugarcoat it. It acknowledges that it took Earth a long, long, long time to accept and understand the concept of peace and unity, and that we went through some serious shit before that. So when the world looks like it can’t possibly get any worse, Star Trek helps to remind me that it may get worse, but humanity always has the potential to be so much better. And someday we’re going to realize that. And someday we’re going to be past all this.

Kissing birds, chalice, Venus.

This is one of the most intriguing rock art panels I saw at Petroglyph National Monument. For one, it is oddly placed, as though the rock slab was deliberately relocated and oriented away from the main field of volcanic boulders on the mesa’s slope.

It is tempting to read a left-to-right narrative from the figures, though there is no reason to suppose that the artisan who made these glyphs intended to express any kind of linear idea. The figures are not words, but mnemonic prompts that recall histories or myths or dreams and visions. If there are stories they are oral transmissions, and the glyphs are just reminders and cues.

And I really have no reason to call the central glyph a chalice other than that is what it looks like to me. The four-pointed star is typically described as a representation of Venus (the planet, not the goddess) by descendants of the ancient Puebloans.

-Joshua Hong

-aka

-je

-guitar dad (who shouldn’t have acquired a nickname that his related to his religion thanks)

-it all started when his parents opened up a music shop before he was born

-then the brightest sunshine on the whole planet was born

-and the rest is history

-sort of

-so when he was old enough his parents gave him his first guitar

-at first he had no idea what to do with it

-he used it as a lightsaber once oops

-in the long run he actually started to learn how to play guitar and it was really cool cause he could play all these different songs on the guitar

-he tried to replicate the opening to Still Original by Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg

-it actually went really well damn kid you got talent

-he also owns a small channel on youtube but doesn’t upload often rip

-after working in the shop for a while he had a genius idea

-he noticed that a lot of kids were getting guitars from his family’s shop

-but wouldn’t know how to play

-so he offered to teach the kids

-for free

-what a kind soul

-his parents suggested that he did it for money and to earn it as a job but it didn’t appeal to him as much as seeing little kids smile after mastering twinkle twinkle little star on guitar

-he also asked if he could hold sessions in the shop and his parents agreed

-so everywhere he went he put up flyers about free guitar lessons in the shop and 1 on 1 sessions too

-at first the parents weren’t too sure about a teenager teaching kids how to play songs like Toxic by Britney Spears and Its Gonna Be Me by Nsync

-iTS GONNA BE MAY (EVERY LITTLE THING I DO)

-but after they came in to see him

-they soon realised that he is a gentle soul and cannot hurt anyone at all

-not even a fly

-except for that one moth in the 7th grade but that was because it flew into his face

-but that’s not the point

-speaking of parents

-your parents and little brother have been talking about taking guitar lessons and after seeing him with the other kids they soon agreed

-but you didn’t exactly know what was going on

-so one morning

-you wake up before anyone else

-it was like 10 am and your parents were out of town

-what amazing timing

-your little brother was dressed before you

-and it was a saturday morning

-w      h      a     t

-”dude why the hell are you dressed before me??”

-”i’m practising guitar today”

-”since when did you start guitar??”

-”i started a while ago”

-”thats why im finding note sheets i thought i was losing my mind wow okAY”

-you shook it off as it was nothing because

-a. your little brother was weird as hell and b. your life was like a really cringey and cool 2000′s Disney Channel sitcom

-you continued eating your breakfast as it was nothing special because it was nothing special

-ding dong

-just as you put your plate in the sink someone rings your doorbell

-as you’re walking to the door you’re thinking about who it could be

-shit maybe your mum and dad came back early cause you and your brother alone in the house spelt out the word trouble in big fat fucking letters

-or its the mailman

-you’re at the door in your pjs holding a cup of tea

-you’re ready to fuck shit up if it’s not the mailman or your parents

-did i mention you had great bed hair like you looked like you just came out of a Pantene commercial

-you open the door

-its a dude

-just holding a guitar

-your fACE GOES SO RED LMAO

-like wtf

-he’s incredibly handsome

-and hes just smiling to you

-like he doesn’t notice the fact that you’re in your god damn pjs

-like they have little eEVEES ON THEM FROM THE TIME THAT YOUR PARENTS WENT TO JAPAN AND THEY WENT TO THE POKEMON CENTRE AND GOT THEM FOR YOU

-eeveeshua

-can that be his nickname instead of the reference to his religion thank

-if he has notice them

-then

-you’re just praying that hes just like awww thats cute

-you give a blank stare like what are you doing why are you here what’s your name hi are you single and ready to bingo

-sorry

-”hi is y/b/n in? i’m joshua and i’m here to teach him guitar. whats your name?

-”ah, yeah hes in. i’ll get him quickly. and my name is y/n.”

-so that’s why the brat is dressed up so nicely

-and why he has a guitar

-that also explains the sandwich you had that was wrapped in music sheets

-thanks dad

-you let him in and you let him sit in your front room

-and you slyly watch from the sidelines

-and you think

-theres an angel in my god damn house

-oh m y   g o D

-so you just go upstairs and call your brother

-”why is there an angel in the front room??!!!!”

-”oh you mean Joshua? yeah hes pretty cool! you should hear him sing too! he sounds like one of those dudes on the voice!”

-oooooooooooooooooooHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH SHIT

-inside you’re breaking down

-f u cjokjsdkwjd

-aaaaaaa

-okay calm down y/n

-you finally get dressed after spending like 10 hours in your eevee pjs i want some so badly

-and you just wear a normal jumper and a pair of jeans

-nothing fancy

-and you just brush your hair

-but when you go to check up on your brother and his new guitar teacher

-joshua

-he just

-freezes?!??!?!

-like he stops after you ask them if they want a drink and hes just looking at you

-like wow

-yoU’RE SO CUTE

-you bring the two drinks in and place them on the table

-”let me know if you want anything to eat, okay?”

-f  r   o      z     e   n

-hes just screaming on the inside

-after a while you hear them play a really popular song

-ok it’s There’s Nothing Holding Me Back by Shawn Mendes

-aka it’s the song you kind of like

-take away the kind of

-you like it a lot

-so you’re just in the kitchen

-you hear them play it

-and you just hum

-then you quietly sing

-then you just sing

-and boi your voice is nICE CHILL FAM

-and joshua hears you laugh a little

-he stops pLAYING BOY WHAT ARE YOU DOING YOU LEAVIN LITTLE MAN HANGIN

-”you hear that?”

-”oh it;s just y/n singing. she does it a lot.”

-”her voice is beautiful.”

-and as he said that

-yOU WALK INTO THE ROOM

-YOU FREEZE

- W  H   A   T

-hE HEARD YOU SHIT

-Joshua is also shook that you’re in the room too

-”y-you heard me? i swear we need to get that echo fixed in the hallway omg you know what i’m gonna call my mum about that now–”

“no, he said that your voice was really nice.”

-”i said beautiful”

-”what he said”

-your face juST GOES AS RED AS A RED BALLOON

-you smile so much

-yOU’RE TOO PRECIOUS FOR THIS WORLd help

-“i have an idea! i’ve been thinking–”

-”bro thats a little dangerous”

-haha very funny but my idea is that you sing and Josh can play the guitar! just once, please?”

-joshua smiled to your brother then to you

-”that sounds like fun, what do you say y/n?”

-YOUR FACE. IS. STILL. RED.

-……cute

-”y/n are you okay?”

-”i-i’m fine…could you excuse me for a moment?”

-you run upstairs to your room

-you jump on your bed

-and you sCREAM

-FU CK

-you calm down and then go downstairs again

-”that sounds really cool”

-but you always thought

-maybe theres a catch

-i smELL A RELATIONSHIP COMIN

-you genuinely made him happy with his voice

-so at the end of the day

-you say goodbye at the door and he just gives you a piece of paper

-with a number

-”what’s this?”

-”it’s my number. we should sing together more often.”

-”it’s a date.”

Hoi An - Vietnam

“Hoi An” translates to “Peaceful Meeting Place”. The city receives 1.5 million visitors a year, most of them being International tourists. The city is most known for its textiles industry, and has over 400 tailor shops. The historic old town centre, featuring the famous Japanese Bridge, now has a  UNESCO heritage protection.

The Lonely Planet has recommended taking a Vietnamese cooking class in Hoi An, as one of its top ten iconic travel experiences. Most cooking classes here begin with a trip to the local market, to choose fresh ingredients. This provides a great opportunity to mix with the local people, and meet street vendors.

1,000 Days in Orbit: MAVEN’s Top 10 Discoveries at Mars

On June 17, our MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution Mission) will celebrate 1,000 Earth days in orbit around the Red Planet.

Since its launch in November 2013 and its orbit insertion in September 2014, MAVEN has been exploring the upper atmosphere of Mars. MAVEN is bringing insight to how the sun stripped Mars of most of its atmosphere, turning a planet once possibly habitable to microbial life into a barren desert world.

Here’s a countdown of the top 10 discoveries from the mission so far:

10. Unprecedented Ultraviolet View of Mars

Revealing dynamic, previously invisible behavior, MAVEN was able to show the ultraviolet glow from the Martian atmosphere in unprecedented detail. Nightside images showed ultraviolet “nightglow” emission from nitric oxide. Nightglow is a common planetary phenomenon in which the sky faintly glows even in the complete absence of eternal light.

9. Key Features on the Loss of Atmosphere

Some particles from the solar wind are able to penetrate unexpectedly deep into the upper atmosphere, rather than being diverted around the planet by the Martian ionosphere. This penetration is allowed by chemical reactions in the ionosphere that turn the charged particles of the solar wind into neutral atoms that are then able to penetrate deeply.

8. Metal Ions

MAVEN made the first direct observations of a layer of metal ions in the Martian ionosphere, resulting from incoming interplanetary dust hitting the atmosphere. This layer is always present, but was enhanced dramatically by the close passage to Mars of Comet Siding Spring in October 2014.

7. Two New Types of Aurora

MAVEN has identified two new types of aurora, termed “diffuse” and “proton” aurora. Unlike how we think of most aurorae on Earth, these aurorae are unrelated to either a global or local magnetic field.

6. Cause of the Aurorae

These aurorae are caused by an influx of particles from the sun ejected by different types of solar storms. When particles from these storms hit the Martian atmosphere, they can also increase the rate of loss of gas to space, by a factor of ten or more.

5. Complex Interactions with Solar Wind

The interactions between the solar wind and the planet are unexpectedly complex. This results due to the lack of an intrinsic Martian magnetic field and the occurrence of small regions of magnetized crust that can affect the incoming solar wind on local and regional scales. The magnetosphere that results from the interactions varies on short timescales and is remarkably “lumpy” as a result.

4. Seasonal Hydrogen

After investigating the upper atmosphere of the Red Planet for a full Martian year, MAVEN determined that the escaping water does not always go gently into space. The spacecraft observed the full seasonal variation of hydrogen in the upper atmosphere, confirming that it varies by a factor of 10 throughout the year. The escape rate peaked when Mars was at its closest point to the sun and dropped off when the planet was farthest from the sun.

3. Gas Lost to Space

MAVEN has used measurements of the isotopes in the upper atmosphere (atoms of the same composition but having different mass) to determine how much gas has been lost through time. These measurements suggest that 2/3 or more of the gas has been lost to space.

2. Speed of Solar Wind Stripping Martian Atmosphere

MAVEN has measured the rate at which the sun and the solar wind are stripping gas from the top of the atmosphere to space today, along with details of the removal process. Extrapolation of the loss rates into the ancient past – when the solar ultraviolet light and the solar wind were more intense – indicates that large amounts of gas have been lost to space through time.

1. Martian Atmosphere Lost to Space

The Mars atmosphere has been stripped away by the sun and the solar wind over time, changing the climate from a warmer and wetter environment early in history to the cold, dry climate that we see today.

Maven will continue its observations and is now observing a second Martian year, looking at the ways that the seasonal cycles and the solar cycle affect the system.

Let’s talk about the elements!

I’ve written a lot about the seven classical planets and celestial/cosmic witchcraft. I think it’s time to bring things a bit more down to earth, though!

This is a new two-part series! It will focus on the natural elements as understood by the Western Magical Tradition.

In today’s article, I’ll be explaining a bit about the history of these concepts and how I see them. I hope you find this interesting and informative!

Thinking About the Elements

Elements are one of the first concepts I learned when beginning a journey into witchcraft.

But! How do we view the elements as concepts? Lets consider how they relate to us and the whole universe. Here’s my views!

Some believe the elements are simply words for natural phenomena.
In other words, Fire is fire - the burning of a campfire or candle, or another flame. Water would always be something like a stream, the ocean or other liquid. I don’t see it this way. They’re far more complex than that!

The four elements stem the observations of ancient philosophers. These thinkers guessed that these substances were the building blocks of physical reality. Of course, they were wrong! In reality, atoms comprise matter. Matter and energy, then, make up the physical universe.

We could associate four classical elements with the four states of matter. These are solid, liquid, gas, and plasma. They’d correspond to earth, water, air, and fire in turn. This is a very simplified view, though!

These concepts were fundamental to the ancients. A wealth of lore has developed around them. They have grown into complex metaphors for aspects of the human condition. The physical manifestations of the elements have become potent symbols.

They represent various mental and emotional phenomena. Symbols are important in witchcraft. The way I see it, all tools of the Craft are symbols used to connect with larger forces that work within the universe.

The elements themselves, and their attributions, are in fact, somewhat arbitrary. This means that each of us will have a different idea of what each element represents!

There’s nothing wrong with this, though. The point is to use them as symbols. What they symbolize to you is your own business!

Qualifying the Elements

In the Western Magical Tradition, there are four core (classical) elements: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water.

Some traditions do posit a fifth element called the quintessence, also known as Spirit or Aether. This fifth element stands apart from the other four, as it doesn’t behave in the same way.

I’ll be focusing on these four, not on the quintessence. Spirit as an element is a very large topic best suited for its own series of articles.

Alchemical thinkers have placed these four into categories. . They’re quite useful for understanding the system.

Each element is either “hot” or “cold,” as well as either “dry,” or “wet.”

This doesn’t describe the physical qualities of the phenomena in question. Rather, these terms are metaphors. They refer to the roles taken by the concepts each element embodies.

Hot and Cold Elements

Hot elements are active in human existence.

They stand for concepts that penetrate and alter the world around them.
An outdated way of putting this would be to describe them as “masculine.” This comes from historical stereotypes about gender. I tend to use the term “active” to describe hot elements. That’s Fire and Air.

Cold elements are passive and receptive.

They represent concepts from which we draw nourishment. They are the structure or substance that forms our mental landscape. The hot elements tend to be the essence or organizing principle.

Cold elements are often stereotyped as “feminine.“  They are Water and Earth, both of which play a nourishing role in human existence.

Wet and Dry Elements

Dryness as a concept within the Western Magical Tradition refers to a fixed state. In other words, the dry elements are things that don’t often change. These elements are full of stability.

The key feature of a dry element is lack of intense motion. We can depend on the stable parts of our existence, represented by these elements.

The dry elements are Fire and Earth. It may seem strange to call fire stable, but it is a reliable source of warmth to us. It represents a constant feature of human life.

When we speak of wet elements, we mean the two elements that aren’t fixed. In other words, elements that flow ,change and transform. It is the concepts associated with these elements that drive the changes. They are reliable, but only insofar as change, itself, is something to rely on!

The wet elements are Air and Water. Both are natural features that shift and flow through our lives. The inclusion of Air as a wet element shows that these are metaphorical, not literal terms.

Much more could be said about how people have described the elements throughout time. The above image shows the alchemical view of how the elements can combine to create secondary principles.

As you might guess, “fixed” and “volatile” here stand for what we’ve been calling “passive” and “active.” If you want to know more about these further topics, I recommend Robert Bartlett’s book, True Alchemy.

The entire concept of the elements is a metaphor, though. It’s a metaphor that can work for you. It can help with your Craft, and help you connect with the universe. I’ll be posting the next article tomorrow! In that, I’ll be discussing each element in detail.

I noticed that not only do an Altean’s markings glow when they feel sad, but their eye color changes. I mean, in this scene where Allura was about to kill destroy the Ai of her dad, her markings were literally glowing and her eyes turned blue

I’m not sure what exactly triggers the glowy markings and changing eye color (maybe it can even change color??) but I think it’s strong emotion towards something or someone. So does this mean we’ll get to see more canonically glowing Alteans in the next season? Bc if so, sign me the fuck up

Solar System: Things to Know This Week

Our Psyche mission to a metal world, which will explore a giant metal asteroid known as 16 Psyche, is getting a new, earlier launch date. Psyche is now expected to launch from the Kennedy Space Center in 2022, cruise through the solar system for 4.6 years, and arrive at the Psyche asteroid in 2026, four years earlier than planned.

Below are 10 things to know about this mission to a completely new and unexplored type of world.

1. Psyche, Squared

Psyche is the name of the NASA space mission and the name of the unique metal asteroid orbiting the sun between Mars and Jupiter. The asteroid was discovered in 1852 by Italian astronomer Annibale de Gasparis and named after the Greek mythological figure Psyche, whom Cupid fell in love with. “Psyche” in Greek also means “soul.”

2. Mission: Accepted

The Psyche Mission was selected for flight earlier this year under NASA’s Discovery Program. And it will take a village to pull off: The spacecraft is being built by Space Systems Loral in Palo Alto, California; the mission is led by Arizona State University; and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory will be responsible for mission management, operations and navigation.

3. An Unusual Asteroid

For the very first time, this mission will let us examine a world made not of rock and ice, but metal. Scientists think Psyche is comprised mostly of metallic iron and nickel, similar to Earth’s core - which means Psyche could be an exposed core of an early planet as large as Mars.

4. Sweet 16

Psyche the asteroid is officially known as 16 Psyche, since it was the 16th asteroid to be discovered. It lies within the asteroid belt, is irregularly shaped, about the size of Massachusetts, and is about three times farther away from the sun than Earth.

5. Discoveries Abound

The Psyche mission will observe the asteroid for 20 months. Scientists hope to discover whether Psyche is the core of an early planet, how old it is, whether it formed in similar ways to Earth’s core, and what its surface is like. The mission will also help scientists understand how planets and other bodies separated into their layers including cores, mantles and crusts early in their histories. “Psyche is the only known object of its kind in the solar system and this is the only way humans will ever visit a core,” said Principal Investigator Lindy Elkins-Tanton of Arizona State University.

6. Think Fast

The mission launch and arrival were moved up because Psyche’s mission design team were able to plot a more efficient trajectory that no longer calls for an Earth gravity assist, ultimately shortening the cruise time. The new trajectory also stays farther from the sun, reducing the amount of heat protection needed for the spacecraft, and will still include a Mars flyby in 2023.

7. Gadgets Galore

The Psyche spacecraft will be decked out with a multispectral imager, gamma ray and neutron spectrometer, magnetometer, and X-band gravity science investigation. More: https://sese.asu.edu/research/psyche

8. Stunning Solar Panels

In order to support the new mission trajectory, the solar array system was redesigned from a four-panel array in a straight row on either side of the spacecraft to a more powerful five-panel x-shaped design, commonly used for missions requiring more capability. Much like a sports car, combining a relatively small spacecraft body with a very high-power solar array design means the Psyche spacecraft will be able to speed to its destination much faster. Check out this artist’s-concept illustration here: https://www.nasa.gov/image-feature/artists-concept-of-psyche-spacecraft-with-five-panel-array

9. See For Yourself

Watch the planned Psyche mission in action.

10. Even More Asteroids

Our missions to asteroids began with the orbiter NEAR of asteroid Eros, which arrived in 2000, and continues with Dawn, which orbited Vesta and is now in an extended mission at Ceres. The mission OSIRIS-REx, which launched on Sept. 8, 2016, is speeding toward a 2018 rendezvous with the asteroid Bennu, and will deliver a sample back to Earth in 2023. The Lucy mission is scheduled to launch in October 2021 and will explore six Jupiter Trojan asteroids. More: https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?feature=6713

“The simple truth is this: During ages philosophers have endeavored to ascertain the constitution of matter, and have been led to the conclusion that the micro- and macro-cosmos are very much alike in some respects. In other words, there are similarities of structure, arrangement and operation between the micro-organism and the universe.

“The suns, stars and moons of the heavens have their counterpart in the molecules, atoms and electrons which form those divisions of matter too small for the unaided human eye to see.

“Accordingly, all bodies are composed of independent particles of different sizes, spinning around each other with prodigious velocities and containing an amount of kinetic energy which recent physical research has shown to be immense.

“If we could capture and transform it we would obtain unlimited power anywhere on this globe. This possibility presented itself to the minds of advanced investigators long ago. It is not a new idea, but science in recent years has rendered it definite and precise.”

–Nikola Tesla

“Rain Can Be Controlled and Hydraulic Force Provided, Says Nikola Tesla, if We Turn to Sun for Our Power.” Syracuse Herald, New York, February 29, 1920.

I was thinking, what if humans are the only ones with hot drinks. Like what if aliens out there are from planets with much thinner atmospheres and so water boils at a way lower temperature and so they can never get hot water. Or their biology makes it impossible for them to consume food or drinks at high temperatures.

Aliens freaking out when they see humans drink liquids at temperatures that can cause serious burns. Or being amazed at the idea of soup, that humans will put food that is supposed to be eaten on its own into pots of extremely hot water because they think it makes it taste better. Aliens being absolutely horrified when they find out about baths or hot tubs because they think the humans are trying to turn themselves into soup. Humans trying not to laugh as they are dragged to the med-bay when they burn their tongues on a cup of hot chocolate because the aliens think they have permanently scorched their body. Aliens thinking the humans are lying about their planet because there is no way so much of human history has been affected by special leaves that they claim they drink.
