Do you have any tips on playing wes?

I’m not the best person to give DS advice? IM STILL A N00B

But yea… he’s really not as hard to play as people make him out to be… it might be just because I’ve been playing NO ONE ELSE and I have nothing to compare him to, but the hardest part to playing Wes to me is honestly just keeping him fed?

He might be a bit of a whimp but his health is not so bad, and the fact that he deals less damage doesn’t really make that much difference in the long run.

Really just,, wear armor and make sure u always got food with u when ur out exploring because this man is a bottomless pit

Buried Hope: Coda 13x2

A not 100% angsty coda to last night’s episode. You can also read it on Ao3 Here.

Dean practically crawled out of that room. It was too much, the sight of Jack, what he did. And Dean knew he’d screwed things up again. When he had the Mark, he did something like what Jack did. He remembered the many ways he’d tried to end himself. Seeing Jack like that froze him up. He said the wrong things. Jack was just a child, if Sam was to be believed. It was what Dean had wanted to hear though, when he was in the same state.

It could have helped Jack. Dean knew though that it didn’t, that he was wrong, that he should go back and say anything. He sucked at this sort of thing, grieving, losing, living. He was maybe entirely broken now if he was letting a kid go through that. And all he could offer him was death as comfort. Dean pressed his head to the wall and let the tears fall. He was alone in his room. No one needed to know what all of this was doing to him.

If Cas were here he’d fix this, things might make sense. “How am I supposed to do this?” He was tapping the wall with his forehead now. The motion repeating, faster and more frustrated. Dean realized he was praying to Cas, and that the prayer would never reach him. More tears came.

He didn’t know what was right anymore. There seemed to be no point, no light at the end of the darkness, no reward or even peace. “I don’t have any love left in me. You took it with you, you goddamn sonofabitch.” Dean was losing it more and more. His face was a mess of tears now. His breathing came in rough gaps.

“Dean,” Jack said as he walked slowly into the room.

“Leave,” Dean said, quietly but with an edge that held a threat in it.

Clearly not seeing the situation for what it was, Jack took another step and said, “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to cause his death or my mother’s death. I don’t know how to fix that. I’m sorry I hurt you. I don’t know how to fix that either.”

“You can’t fix shit, Jack.” Dean hazarded a look at him past eyes that were swollen now from the crying he’d needed to do. Jack moved toward him, raising a hand. “Don’t.”

Jack ignored him and set his hand on Dean’s shoulder anyway. “I can show you what he showed me.”

Even the Trees

It’s such a Castle thing to do, bringing the French press on a camping trip, but when he makes her the very first cup, she’s impressed. Very impressed. Somehow, the fact that the water was boiled over a wood fire makes it taste better. Earthier. More robust.

“Not bad, Castle,” she says over the rim of her mug, watching his shoulders lift with pride beneath the cozy plaid flannel shirt he wears (and wears very well). “I think you and I might just manage to make it out of these woods alive if you keep making coffee like this.”

Her partner’s laughter echoes through the campsite, bouncing off the bark of the trees, spreading a warmth through her belly that not even the coffee can match. There’s something earthy about his amusement, too, more robust out here in the woods, less put upon and flashy. Just him. Just like the coffee he’s pouring into the second mug.

She might just kiss him before breakfast is over if he keeps laughing like that, if he keeps looking at her with those soft eyes.

(But she’s going to need a story about why his mug says ‘get well soon’ - like pronto.)

Do you feel like Mor should just tell Az that's she's not into him? Like she definitely shouldn't come out until she's ready but while I was reading I kinda felt like the main problem was that neither of them were communicating.

In a way, yes? But also she has tried, in her own way, to do that. He just isn’t taking the hint. I know that @squaddreamcourt made a post a while back about how Azriel might find it easier to attach himself to someone who is unattainable because he doesn’t find himself worthy of love, and that could totally be the reason why he is being stubborn and refusing to understand the signals she keeps throwing his way. I think any other self-respecting and half-aware bro would have understood ages ago that it was hopeless and moved on. We know that Az isn’t stupid, in fact if anyone could claim “observant” on their CV, it’s him, right? That’s his whole job.

Mor just can’t say the words explicitly because for her, there is a lot more at stake. She doesn’t want to hurt her friend. She doesn’t want their relationship to suffer, especially when he is the one who saved her and she has found a home there with Rhys, Cassian, Azriel, and Amren. Telling someone how you really feel, especially if it is about things like love, can suck so hardcore. It’s pretty easy to imagine that caring for someone means you will tell them the truth all the time, but it’s surprisingly easy to lie in order to spare feelings.

But yes, 100%, they were not communicating in an open way that would have healed their relationship much sooner. However, that communication is much easier for Azriel, considering what they have at stake. Mor has queerphobia and a father who was going to sell her off for breeding, while Az has basically his own feelings at stake and that’s it. We see how that soldier treats Mor and Viviane’s sister in the camp after Elain is rescued. We know already that the Court of Nightmares, where she grew up, is incredibly misogynistic, and by extension queerphobic. So for Az, while it might be a matter of “ow, my feels,” for Mor, it’s more like “ow, my feels, and oh yeah I have now been ostracized and outcast and will have to live the rest of my life being spit on and hey, good luck, me, if I ever want to have a relationship with a woman!”

And I think that if she were to tell Az outright that she were not interested, she wouldn’t be able to stop at “hey friend, I’m not into you”. I think that she would want to be honest with him and tell him the entire story. But she feels like she can’t do that, because of the aforementioned reasons.

So what I’m kinda hoping is that in the next books, something happens that forces them to take sides again, like they did after the CoN scene. Because in that case, they wouldn’t be able to brush it under the rug anymore. Instead, Mor would have Cassian on her side ready to kick anyone’s ass who is going to hurt her, and Feyre will be there, as will Amren and Lucien (because those are the people we saw rallying against Rhys after that scene, sorry bby bat), and then they will have to come to some sort of realization that this situation sucks and never should have occurred in the first place, and then Rhys will eventually take Mor’s side as well (not like, against Az, just… realizing what she has had to deal with? and then deciding to change the culture that has lead to this literal clusterfuck).

What is this person's argument about canon? Considering TVD came before TO and SETS canon, Klaus promised to be Caroline's last love meaning they both go off and live their lives, and when she's ready they will be together. That literally means Klaus would drop EVERYTHING when she came along because before her everything else was just filler. And Julie already confirmed that outside of his own family, Caroline has known Klaus the best and longest so I mean in the politest way...go find a hobby.

Eh, I’m more than good with the CANON fact that Klaus OFTEN thought about Caroline and the things she’d be doing in her life. He didn’t forget her, jumped at the first chance to ask about her, talk TO her. “Last love” always implied there would be loves in between. Cami might have been one of them but she was always going to be temporary. Otherwise, wouldn’t Klaus have ASKED her to consider turning into a vampire at some point in their acquaintance?

The tea is good today, folks.

I wrote a response yesterday that tried to explain why people might dislike / distrust Asra, and it was just now that I came to a realization

One of the biggest reasons I don’t trust Asra is that he, above everyone else, takes away MC’s autonomy. Think about it, Asra has the power to just take away MC’s memories. Sure, he says he did it to protect them and that doing so bothers him but it doesn’t change the fact that he has exerted a control over the MC that they’re utterly at the mercy of. At this point, MC is essentially at everyone’s mercy but Asra has a huge amount of control over them

There is a power imbalance between Asra and MC, which isn’t helped by Asra cryptic behavior. Regardless of how he feels about what he did, it doesn’t change the fact that he did it and continuously denies MC’s right to know information about themself. It doesn’t matter that he did it to protect the MC, he is still removing the MC’s independence, and their right to choose whether or not they want to be protected

Asra made a choice, which could have been without MC’s consent, and it removed MC’s rights - right to information, right to independence, and right to friggin choose. It’s really, really hard to trust someone like that. Asra could be the sweetest dude in the world but that doesn’t change the amount of sheer power he has over MC, and its power that MC can’t really negate or defend themself against so yeah

I’d say Asra is worth a whole lot of distrust and caution because frankly, that is immensely disturbing

So, I don't know how to write pain like! What words do I use? how do I describe it! I really need some help here!

No problem! And sorry about not answering sooner, I was on vacation. To make it up to you, I’ve made one of my trademark Long Posts about it.

TIPS ON HOW TO WRITE PAIN (FOR BOTH ORIGINAL CONTENT WRITERS AND FANFICTION WRITERS)

When I first started writing, about eight years ago, I had the same issue as @imjustafuckinggirl.

How are you supposed to write about pain you’ve never experienced before???

The characters in my book suffer through all sorts of terrible shit, and in no way am I writing from experience, which is marginally easier to do than write about something that has never happened to you.

However, with time, I managed to gather up a few strategies on how to write pain.

1. Don’t Write Paragraphs About It

I know, it’s tempting. You want to convey to the reader just how much pain the character is in, and you think that the pain will be emphasized the more you write about it.

This, however, is a lie.

As a reader, when I’m reading a book or fanfiction where, whenever the writer uses agonizingly long paragraphs to describe when a character is hurt, I skip it.

Entirely.

It’s boring and, quite frankly, unnecessary, especially during a fight or huge battle, which are supposed to be fast-paced.

When it comes to writing about pain, it really is about quality and not quantity.

In my own writing, I stick to short, quick paragraphs, some of them which are barely a line long. This gives it a faster pace and sort of parallels with the scattered, spread out thoughts of the character as they suffer.

2. Describe it Right

Many times, usually in fanfiction, writers over-exaggerate certain injuries.

This partially has to do with the fact that they’ve never experienced that injury before and are just thinking about what it might feel like.

As a girl with two brothers and who often participated in rough play-fights, I can assure you that getting punched is not as painful as you think it is.

(However, it does depend on the area, as well as how hard the punch is, on top of the fact that you have to take into account whether or not the punch broke bones)

I’m reading a high school AU where a character gets punched by a bully (Idk where they got punched it wasn’t stated) and the author is describing it like they’d been shot.

It was to the point where I was like Did the bully have brass knuckles or something????

It was very clear that this author had never been punched before.

When describing the pain of an injury or the injury itself, you have to take into account:

- What object was used to harm the character

- Where the injury is

- How long the character has had the injury

- (For blades) How deep the cut is

- (For blunt force trauma) How hard the hit was

- Whether or not the wound triggers other things (Ex: Concussion, vomiting, dizziness, infection, internal/external bleeding).

There’s also the fact that when some authors described wounds caused by blades such as knives, daggers, and swords, they never take into account the anatomy of a person and which places cause the most blood flow.

Obviously, a cut on your cheek will have less of a blood flow than a cut on your wrist, depending on what the blade hits, and I hope that everyone consults a diagram of veins, capillaries, arteries, etc. when they’re describing blood flow from a certain place.

There’s also the fact that you have to take into account where the blood is coming from. Veins? Arteries?

The blood from arteries will be a brighter red, like vermilion, than the blood from veins, which is the dark crimson everyone likes to talk about.

Not all places gush bright red blood, people!

3. DIFFERENT INJURIES HAVE DIFFERENT KINDS OF PAIN

Here, let me explain.

A punch feels different from a slap.

A broken arm feels different from getting stabbed.

A fall feels different from a dog bite.

I’ll give you a list of all the kinds of things that can be described for the three most common kinds of injuries that happen in stories:

Punch/Blunt Force Trauma

How it feels:

- Aching

- Numbness (In the later stages)

- A single spike of pain before it fades into an ache

- Throbbing

Effects:

- Vomiting (If the character is punched in the gut)

- Swelling

- Bruising

- Broken bones

- Unconsciousness (Blow to the head)

- Dizziness (Blow to the head)

- Concussion (Also a blow to the head)

- Internal bleeding

- Death (In the case of concussions and internal bleeding and broken bones- ribs can pierce lungs)

Stab Wound/Cut

How it feels:

- Stinging (only shallow wounds have just stinging)

- Burning

- With stab wounds, I feel like describing the effects of it make it more powerfully felt by the reader

Effects:

- Bleeding (Consult chart of the circulatory system beforehand for the amount of blood flow that should be described and what color the blood should be)

- Dizziness (Heavy blood loss)

- Unconsciousness

- Infection (if left unattended)

- Death

Gunshot

How it feels:

- Depends on the caliber bullet, from how far away they were shot (point-blank range is nothing like being shot from a distance), and in what place. Do careful research and then make your decision.

Effects:

- Bleeding (Consult chart of the circulatory system beforehand for the amount of blood flow that should be described and what color the blood should be. Also take into effect the above variables for blood flow as well.)

- Dizziness (Heavy blood loss)

- Infection (if left unattended)

- Death

Some things that a character may do while they’re injured:

- Heavy/Harsh/Ragged breathing

- Panting

- Making noises of pain

  • gasping
  • grunting
  • hissing
  • groaning
  • whimpering
  • yelping (when the injury is inflicted)
  • screaming
  • shrieking
  • wailing

- Crying/ Weeping/Sobbing/Etc.

- Clenching their teeth

- Unable to speak

- Pressing their hands against a stab wound/cut to try and stem the bleeding

- Eyesight going out of whack (vision blurring and tilting, the room spinning, black spots consuming sight)

- Eyes rolling up into their head

- Trembling/shaking

- Ears riniging (from gunshot)

HOPE THIS HELPED!

One thing I really like about BNHA is the constant acknowledgement of the fact that the shonen manga “I can do anything if I just push myself hard enough and refuse to ever rest or back down” mindset is incredibly self destructive.

Like. All Might is falling apart, physically. Midoriya, at just 15, has destroyed his body so many times that he risks paralysis every time he channels his power through his arms. Iida has severe nerve damage in one hand. And literally no one who cares about them is pretending that this is an acceptable way to be. Even the resident magic cure-all, Recovery Girl, can’t do enough to keep up with the damage they put themselves through, and in Midoriya’s case has threatened to stop healing him so as not to enable his self-destructive tendencies.

Plus, a lot of their character development revolves around learning NOT to be like that. Iida spends several arcs after his fight with Stain trying to atone for the trouble his recklessnes caused and trying to prevent Midoriya from getting into the same type of trouble. All Might has to learn to live as a civilian after he gives his power to Midoriya and then CONTINUES to push his body so far that he pretty much breaks. Midoriya develops a new fighting style, reevaulates his tendency to rush in, and learns to ask for help from the Support department in order to keep from destroying himself in the same way.

It’s honestly refreshing; I was a little sick of the Bleach-style “the hero can loose twice his weight in blood and be totally fine an episode later” type of storytelling.

Making Out with Peter Parker would include..

- first of all

- look at peter he’s so in love with you he couldn’t even focus for the gif

- ADSFGJK LOOK AT HIS EYES HE’S SO CUTE

- anyways

- you two cuties are literally a blushing mess

- happened while watching a movie at his place

- may just left to go get dinner

- him glancing at you

- holding your hand

- ‘hey (y/n) c-can i kiss you’

- ‘peter we’ve been dating for four months why do you keep asking’

- BUT YOU WERE NOT READY FOR WHAT HOMEBOY HAD READY FOR YOU

- but the little angel was so gentle

- truth is he really doesn’t want to pressure you

- or break boundaries

- what a caring baby AWAWAW

I miss this place. I miss making funny things for all of you. I miss interacting with all of my wonderful followers. I miss meeting new people. I just miss it all so much.

But I’m afraid things beyond my control have kept me away. I just don’t have the energy or concentration to keep up with my tumblr. I have a hard time coming up with funny ideas. I have an even harder time finding a way to turn those ideas into posts. I’ve had to give up photography all together. I tried just eating a meal with my parents for my birthday, and after ten minutes of sitting up straight, I ran out of energy and had to lay back down. My chronic fatigue, my narcolepsy, my depression… they all seem to fight one another in an unending battle that just keeps getting worse and worse. It’s hard to describe just how tired I am. How fatigued my body gets. How my limbs feel like they weigh hundreds of pounds.

I’ve run out of doctors to see. Treatments to try. Pills to take. Injections to… inject. My only last real hope is to go to the Mayo Clinic. They have a knack for creating treatments for people with complicated medical needs. But there’s the rub. They are out of state. My insurance wouldn’t cover it. I’d have to stay for days or even weeks. I barely have enough to pay for food, much less a ticket to another state. At this moment, it just doesn’t seem like a possible option.

If there is a bright side… I’m comfortable. I’m not in any pain. I am plenty occupied with the internet, TV, and movies. And in the category of “mixed blessings” I am emotionally numb. No, I cannot feel great joy. Which kinda sucks. But I also cannot feel great sadness. No despair. I still get lonely from time to time. And maybe a little.. frustrated. But I cope with those things pretty well most of the time. I think if I did have emotions at the moment, they would all suck pretty hard. So I feel like at this point, it isn’t so bad being a little numb.

I have a couple of great friends that stick with me even when I’m a huge bummer. I have two amazing parents that take care of me when I can’t manage to care for myself. I have a quirky little dog that visits me from time to time.

I know there are chronic conditions that cause much physical and mental pain. I know I don’t have much of a life at the moment, but I am grateful that I can stay reasonably comfortable. Though I could go without the kidney stones I seem to keep getting. Having those removed is just awful and my last recovery period did not go well at all.

In any case, I just wanted to let you all know I am still around. I promise I am not giving up. But I am also coming to terms with the fact that I might not be able to do much about my situation. I will continue to seek out new treatments, medications, and even doctors that might help. I try to keep tabs on the latest research. Maybe some day they will find a key to this jail I’m stuck in.

You all have brought me so much joy. It has been an honor entertaining you over the years. This is by no means a goodbye. Perhaps just a “see ya later.” Take care of yourselves. Take care of one another. Stay strong. And perhaps keep me in your thoughts every once in a while. I guess it’s just nice knowing I’m not forgotten. Helps keep me going day to day.

What she says: I’m fine.

What she means: Hyun Ryu, aka Zen, deserves so much better? A lot of people talk about how good looking he is or that he’s a narcissist, but they forget that it’s a crucial point in his route is how self conscious he really is? And don’t even get me started on how people ignore that his mother emotionally abused him during his childhood. Who the hell calls their child ugly? To protect them? Instead of just teaching them that people might take advantage of them because of how they look so they should keep their guard up? Suuure. I, for one, am proud that he still manages to be so confident after all that. And he’s still going after his dreams despite the fact that he was told he wasn’t going to make it anywhere. He joined a gang and got out of it to make his life better. And he’s doing it on his own, too, wow. People also give him crap for hating on Jumin, which is understandable, but making up with Jumin is also a crucial part of his route. He lets go of projecting his the image of his brother on Jumin and they actually become friends who just have banter? There is no reason to hate this boy? He’s such a sweetheart that gives really useful advice when it comes to handling life and tough situations. He’s very comforting and willing to go above and beyond for the people close to him. He’s willing to drop everything to run over to MC or take in Yoosung. He cares about Jaehee’s health and really just wants her to take a break? He a Mom Friend and a big brother but he’s also such a cute dork? Especially when it comes to things like technology and romantic gestures? The boy even wants to let MC meet his parents before they get married and they won’t let him in the door? And the fandom portrays him as this salty, kind of violent, self-absorbed, character? And don’t even get me started on The Beast™ because? He doesn’t even bring it up that often? And when he does bring it up, it’s after he meets MC in person and even then, it’s only briefly before he changes the subject. Cause this boy would literally wait as long as MC wants him to. I could literally go on, but the main point is that Zen deserves so much better and I will love him enough for the whole fandom if I have to.

Season 4 complaints

I’ve seen some people posting about how season 4 just ignored all the development in season 3 and yada yada so I decided to make a post about my view on the most popular complaints.

  • “Shiro’s headache and the whole it must be a clone theory was totally put aside because now he pilots Black again!”

Shiro going back to being the black paladin wasn’t him just saying “well let’s try this again just because” and the black lion going “one time is not enough but TWO times hell yeah u my paladin”

No.

The team was in danger, Keith was away and was constantly showing signs that he would end up leaving the team. Another thing, Shiro had to convince Black to let him pilot it.

My point is: Black would not let the paladins fucking die if it could do something to save them. After letting Shiro (or clone Shiro) pilot it Keith decided he was going to leave and BUM there’s no return now and Shiro (or clone Shiro) had to be the black paladin.

Besides, if the clone builds connections with the team and loves them as much real Shiro it will be 1000000 times more heartbreaking to show real Shiro coming back.

  • “Lance’s and Keith’s relationship development was completely thrown away!”

Those kids are at a war. That’s what they’re doing in space, they’re fighting a war. You guys really think Keith (the guys who’s been fighting with all his strength the whole time, who has put his friends in danger just for the possibility of attacking Lotor, who trains more than anyone) is going to focus more on a crush we are not even sure he really has than on the fight against the Galra?

Voltron is not a show about two boys finding more about themselves and slowly falling in love with each other. Their relationship is a SUBPLOT, let the main plot run its course for God’s sake.

  • “Lance’s character development was ignored and now he’s back to the way he was in season 1!!”

Lance didn’t really open up for the team about his insecurities. He had one good talk with Keith, who left, and that’s it. Lance may be self-centered but he’s not self-centered enough to put his problems above the war they’re fighting. The whole thing about Lance’s character is that he hides his insecurities behind a mask of confidence and jokes.

Moreover, being insecure doesn’t mean being sad all the fucking time. He genuinely enjoyed being an actor and doing performances and flying around so let the boy be happy.

He never stopped being a flirt either.

  • “Lotor’s generals would not turn on him like that!”

We don’t know that. In fact, we know close to nothing about Lotor’s relationship with his generals.

As much as I love the idea of all the characters getting good development I know that’s not really possible. The show is not about Lotor and his generals, is about team voltron.

Besides, we might get some more information in the future, just like how it was done with Zarkon’s backstory.

  • “Keith leaving the team ruined the dynamic season 3 built!”

Firstly, Keith never wanted to be the leader and after the talk he had with Lance it was obvious he would not claim Red back when Shiro came back. Secondly, the Blade kind of represents a family to him in a sense, they’re a connection to his past. With Shiro being back and Red having a good pilot, Keith saw the possibility of helping team Voltron and the Blade at the same time. He took the opportunity.

In season 3, Keith wasn’t the leader because he wanted to, he was the leader because he had to. Now he can do something he really wants to do instead of being stuck in a position he doesn’t consider his own. Be happy for the guy.

  • “Lotor has barely been introduced as a main antagonist and is already having a redemption arc!”

Lotor’s intentions were very different from Zarkon’s intentions. He wasn’t after Voltron like crazy, trying to destroy the Lions or get them for himself. Lotor had a very specific plan and just used his position as the new leader of the Galra empire to to help him with it.

The talk he wants to have is not a “Wow I’m suddenly a good guy”. Lotor’s is an enemy for the Galra now and if wants his plan to succeed he needs allies. My enemy’s enemy is my best friend. Team voltron kind of has a debt to Lotor now that he literally saved everyone so he has an advantage.

Lotor doesn’t want to become a hero, he just wants his plan to work.

That’s it. Might do a part 2 later.

When your schizophrenic friend talks about delusions or hallucinations

Don’t:

  • Tell us it’s real.
  • Add more information or details to our delusions.
  • Try to take control of or change our delusions.
  • Give us examples of what it could be besides a delusion or a hallucination as in “what if these shadow people you see are ACTUALLY ghosts.”
  • Tell us that we’re stupid or crazy or dumb or sick for believing what we see and think is real.
  • Tell us not to talk about it.
  • Confront us with the fact that it isn’t real and that we’re sick unless you’ve talked to us first about whether that helps and gotten our permission. You’re not our therapist and we might not need or want you to confront our illness, we might just want you to be supportive and listen.
  • Dismiss or invalidate our thoughts and experiences. They’re very real to us.

Do:

  • Ask us what we need from you - do your friend need and want you to confront them with the fact that they’re sick and it isn’t real or would you doing that make everything worse?
  • Listen and be empathetic. Example: “wow, that must be scary, I totally get that you’re upset - can I do anything to make you feel better?”
  • Tell us that what we see and hear can’t hurt us and that we’re safe even though we’re experiencing these upsetting things.
  • Try to distract us - ask if we want to do something active with you like playing a board game or going for a run or going to the mall to get our minds off things and connect us to reality.
  • Understand that what we think and experience is real to us.
  • Help us feel safe and let us be weird in the attempt to feel safe. Let us pour salt on the floor if it keeps the demons away, give us water from and unopened bottle if there’s something wrong with the water in the taps, taste our food to check if it’s poisonous and help us cover the cameras so they can’t watch us.
  • Let us talk about it. We have the same need to share and talk about our thoughts and experiences as everyone else and sometimes we just need someone to listen without judging or invalidating us.
Totally legit facts about Gil™

* Only sleeps for like 4 hours a day

* Exists on a diet of coffee, sandwiches and whatever the future version of skittles is

* Loves vodka whilst he’s robbing everyone blind at poker

* Vodka doesn’t love him - if, and when, he’s hungover, he has to stay in bed all day and eat whilst he watches cheesy crime/detective shows (preferably whilst spooning with Ryder)

* Him and Jill may or may not have “”””accidentally”””” conned a senior alliance officer out of ~500 credits one time at a casino on the Citadel (they were then told ‘politely’ to never come back)

* Amazingly his hair just does that - probably something to do with him working by the mass effect core all day

*  Gil spends like 20 minutes trying to shave his chin juuuuuuust right

* Never cleans up after himself when he tinkers with stuff on the ship - whenever Ryder needs to find him they just follow the trail of discarded wrenches, oil spills and sandwich crumbs (for the hungry engineer on the go)

(was thinking about these the other night just deciding to post it now because 1) it’s a break from doing my report and 2) I’m all about that Gil Brodie)

Friendly reminder that Spanish (and some other languages) have many regional varieties with different vocabulary and people that make vocabulary lists do not necessarily know every term used around the world

So please don’t be rude when you see someone use a word in their vocab list that you’ve never seen cuz it might just used in another region :/

The clinking of Jack’s fork against his plate as he sets it down is very unnerving. It’s not the only sound in the room but it’s by far the loudest, to him at least. Even louder than Suzanne’s pleasant babbling (no wonder where Bitty gets it from) and the gentle lull of music being played on a radio somewhere in another room. Probably the kitchen, where Bitty’s finishing up supper.

There’s a shuffling around the corner and Coach becomes visible as he nears the bottom of the staircase. “Jack,” he mumbles gruffly in greeting, giving him a nod and sitting at the head of the table.

“Hello, Mr. Bittle,” Jack replies, smiling a little. “How’s the season going? Still the reigning champs of Morgan County?” If there’s one thing Jack knows he can get Coach to talk about, it’s football. It might be a much different sport than hockey, Jack surmises, but the passion they share for their sports is more than enough for them to hold a conversation.

“Oh, they lost their first game of the season last week. Nevin’s got an injury and we had to switch around the lineups– you remember, Nevin, receiver, curly hair, he’s in the team picture in the living room– anyway, I’m sure it hurt their chemistry.” Coach would talk strategy with Jack for hours, if it was up to him, but Eric is coming into the dining room now. He’s got on yellow oven mitts with tiny white flowers, and he’s holding a tray with a roast and some vegetables.

“The meat’s a little dry, Lord help me, I should stick to baking,” Eric laughs, setting the tray down on the table. “But all the vegetables should be good and I’ve got some pumpkin muffins with a fantastic cream cheese frosting waiting for us in the kitchen.” Everyone starts to serve themselves. The meat’s not dry at all, but Jack keeps that to himself. Sometimes Bitty needs little things to dwell on, to keep himself busy so he’s not worrying so much about the big stuff. Jack knows that.

“So,” Suzanne starts after a minute, and Jack can tell that this is going to be a long one. He glances up at her, a signal that he’s listening. “The Gardeners are having a potluck this Friday, and they sent us an invitation.”

Bitty nearly drops his fork. “The Gardeners?” he hisses. “As in, Melissa and Kyle?”

“Those Gardeners,” Suzanne replies smugly. Jack and Coach exchange a look, humor gleaming in both of their eyes. The drama is about to unfold, they can tell. “What right do they think they’ve got, inviting us to their potluck after what happened at ours?”

Bitty turns to Jack, waving his hands as he speaks. “Two summers ago, we held a potluck here for the neighborhood, and when the Gardeners showed up, Kyle was drunk as a skunk and knocked over our entire dessert table. The whole thing! It was all ruined! And it would have been okay, but they didn’t even bring anything to the potluck in the first place, and they never apologized, and oh, it was such a mess, everyone tried to act like it wasn’t a big deal but darlin’ you should’ve seen the look on Moomaw’s face, I swear she was on the verge of a heart attack.” He shifts abruptly back toward Suzanne. “Mama, we’ve got to go.”

“Oh, I know that, of course we do. Dicky, what you’ve gotta do is bake the best pie those folks have ever tasted, let them know exactly what they were destroying when they had the nerve-”

Jack hums quietly, making a mental note. Potluck on Friday. Prepare for a spectacle.

Bitty’s fingers press against Jack’s neck as he helps him straighten his collar. Jack doesn’t really need the help, he supposes, but the contact is welcome, brief but full of warmth, not the kind of affection Jack usually gets when they’re with Bitty’s parents. They’ve been trying really hard, Jack can tell, and Bitty has too. But he understands why Eric sometimes has trouble being soft with Jack around Suzanne and Coach.

“Don’t you just look dashing,” Bitty says with a smile, placing his hand flat on Jack’s chest.

“Only because you picked my outfit,” Jack laughs. Bitty laughs with him, nodding in agreement. He’s got little crinkles at the edges of his eyes when he laughs, and Jack rubs his thumb over them, absent minded.

“You ready, Dicky?” Suzanne calls from the kitchen. The noises of the coffee pot stop and Jack can hear her pouring herself a cup.

“All ready!” Bits yells back. He reaches up his hand and squeezes Jack’s wrist before whirling around into the kitchen. Jack watches Bitty’s hips swing as he leaves, his jeans a little tighter than usual since he’s outgrown some of the clothes that he left here during the school year, and wonders if wore them on purpose.

-

The potluck is bustling. There are people of all ages, from the tiny toddlers playing in the Slip ‘N Slide far left in the back yard to the old ladies knitting underneath the sugar maple next to the house in a comically stereotypical manner. Jack opens Eric’s door for him not out of chivalry but out of necessity– when he emerges from the car, his arms are full of tupperware containers.

“Let me take some, bud” Jack offers, but Bitty shakes his head.

“I’ve got to bring them over myself.”

-

“This one’s cherry with a lattice crust,” Eric is explaining as he removes the lid from the nearest tupperware container. The egregious Melissa Gardener turns out to be a petite brunette with a smattering of freckles across her upturned nose. “And this one’s pumpkin, I know it’s not really the season but I had some materials left over from the muffins I made the other night and I’m sure it’ll be just delightful, I made the whipped cream myself– now, they’re all desserts. I was sure you’d need some.”

Jack stifles a laugh. The bite in Bitty’s voice is unmistakable. “Where should I set them?” Eric asks, still sweet as sugar but with a lilt that suggests this isn’t an innocent question. “This table seems a little… unsteady. I wouldn’t want them to fall, heaven forbid.”

“This table’s fine,” Melissa ensures him, smiling. “Thank you so much for the contributions.”

“It’s nothing at all.”

They burst out laughing as soon as she leaves, Bitty collapsing into Jack’s chest. Jack’s arms come around him automatically and squeeze. “Bits, that was cold.”

“Really? Here I was, thinking I was being so courteous.”

They stay in the embrace for a few more seconds before Bitty shifts away from Jack. It’s subtle, but Jack understands. He squeezes Bitty’s shoulder and then takes a step away. Bitty’s out to everyone who matters, but some people don’t know. And some still have their prejudices.

“Bits, where’s the bathroom?” Jack asks. The noise is already getting to him. He knows he’s got a while of this to go, and he’s sure he’ll be fine, but he just needs a minute to adjust. Eric points him in the right direction, then goes back to arranging the pies on the table.

“Eric!” Bitty whips around. It’s a tall guy with acne scars in a red polo shirt. Bitty looks up, his face ghostly stricken for a second, then paints a big smile on.

“Hey, Todd,” he replies as the guy moves closer. “How have you been.”

“I’ve been fine, thanks,” Todd says. Eric tugs on the bottom of his shirt and glances over at Jack, entering the house. “Who’s the guy?” Todd asks, nodding toward him.

“Jack,” Eric says. “My… my boyfriend.”

Todd smiles. He turns his gaze to Bitty. “I’ve gotta say, Eric, I’m impressed! I expected you to come home with some twinky faggot in a pink H&M scarf.”

Eric inhales sharply. “Go away,” he says quietly, looking at his shoes. “My love life is none of your business.”

“We all knew you were a homo, Bittle, I guess it’s just a little surprising that you’re still showing your face around here. Are you queers ever gonna stop shoving your agenda in our faces? Huh? Go back to Samwell, eh?” He’s inching closer now, and Eric’s cheeks are flaming red.

“Go fuck yourself,” Eric mutters, turning his back. He unstacks a tin of macadamia nut cookies from his lemon meringue, and opens it. His hands are shaking as he spreads them out artfully.

Todd ignores his response, instead reaching over Bitty and sweeping up several cookies. “Don’t mind if I do,” he says as he stuffs one in his mouth. “Mmm,” he replies, smirking. “They’re a little bit… fruity, don’t you think?”

“That’s not even funny,” Eric rolls his eyes. “Get the hell away from me.”

“And if I don’t?”

There’s a hand on the back of Bitty’s neck and he’s flinching, he’s freezing, he can’t move he can’t breathe–

“If you don’t,” Jack whispers, his voice robotic and cold. “I’ll beat the shit out of you, and you can crawl home to your mother and tell her you got your ass handed to you by a faggot. Does that sound like a good enough reason to stop?”

Todd takes a step back. “Don’t you fucking touch me,” he hisses at Jack. “You’re not from around here, are you? You don’t know who my dad is, do you?”

“Let me guess. Mayor of some town I’ve never heard of? Principal of the local high school? Do you know who my father is, noune?” Jack puffs up his shoulders. “Because I can guaran-fucking-tee that my dad is a hell of a lot worse to mess with than yours. So you might just wanna step off.”

“Whatever. I shouldn’t be talking to y’all anyway. Just in case it’s contagious, you know?” Todd smirks.

“I’m going to fucking kill you,” Jack says, still matter of fact, balling his fists and lunging toward Todd. Todd flinches, but the blow doesn’t come. Bitty’s caught the back of Jack’s t-shirt in his hand.

“Jack, honey, it’s okay. I can handle it.”

Todd laughs.

“But this– this asshole–”

“Trust me, sweetpea, I’ve got this.” Eric smiles.

“Yeah, you’re sure gonna take care of me, Bittle, what can you weigh, a hundred and ten? I bet you couldn’t even–”

Splat.

“Pity,” Eric says sweetly as the pie tin slides down Todd’s face, then down his shirt, coating him in cherry filling. “That lattice crust was gorgeous.”

“You– you–” Todd splutters, wiping cherry crud out of his eyes, but Bitty and Jack are already walking away.

“Enjoy the snacks, Melissa,” Eric calls over his shoulder as they make their way to the car. “We’re gonna head out.”
