in a lifetime of chance

A Hands-On Exercise

Pairing: Bucky Barnes/Reader

Word count: 5631

Summary: You hate your job, your life, and the cracks in your bedroom ceiling. Fortunately, you’ve got the chance of a lifetime after hacking—ethically hacking, that is—into Tony Stark’s systems. Unfortunately, your interview ends with you inadvertently pissing off the Winter Soldier. Will he forgive you for hacking into his arm?

Warnings: mild swearing, mild sensuality, mildly unethical behavior

Clues: This author’s niece is strictly normal, but she loves her anyway. And—what the heck? Is that a five-color palette?

Your index finger hovers over the enter key.

“Should I do it?” you ask.

“No.” Kim’s voice brokers no argument, even with the slight lisp due to the highlighter in her teeth. She turns another page in her book.

“Hmph.”

You’re lying on the floor in Kim’s room, your legs stretched up the wall and your laptop digging into your stomach. It’s uncomfortable, but you’re trying to make the biggest decision of your life. Moving would be sub-optimal.

The program you’re maybe about to run is one you’ve been working on for years. One that might land you the job of a lifetime. A teenage dream, and now a potential reality.

If.

If, if, if.

BIG NEWS. Very excited to be able to share this. And very excited to be working with Mike again on this simultaneously new and old adventure. Give him a follow too if you haven’t already, as we chronicle this journey: @michaeldantedimartino

Here’s our quote from the press release: “We’re thrilled for the opportunity to helm this live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. We can’t wait to realize Aang’s world as cinematically as we always imagined it to be, and with a culturally appropriate, non-whitewashed cast. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to build upon everyone’s great work on the original animated series and go even deeper into the characters, story, action, and world-building. Netflix is wholly dedicated to manifesting our vision for this retelling, and we’re incredibly grateful to be partnering with them.” — Bryan Konietzko & Michael DiMartino

I’m so excited we can finally announce what’s in the works! Bryan and I are currently developing this new live-action version of Aang’s story. It’s going to be an epic ride!

“We’re thrilled for the opportunity to helm this live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender,” DiMartino and Konietzko said in a release announcing the project. “We can’t wait to realize Aang’s world as cinematically as we always imagined it to be, and with a culturally appropriate, non-whitewashed cast. M.L. Rio; If We Were Villains

“I am all too aware of my own desperate need to find a message in the madness, and as it takes shape I am suspicious, afraid to hope. But the implications of the text and its small part in our story are impossible to ignore, too critical for a scholar as meticulous as James to overlook.”

Here’s a little excerpt :D

Yuuri expected the God of Perfection to be able to keep up with him, but could he respond to more complicated footwork without prompts? Here was his chance of a lifetime to prove his dominance over Spring.

And to his credit, Viktor swayed his hips in exactly the right places, leaned back into a dip exactly when Yuuri planned it, switched grips and allowed Yuuri to turn him perfectly, stepped forward to wrap his leg around Yuuri’s when Yuuri stepped between Viktor’s legs; all without breaking their formation. Then when they would come back together, Viktor slotted perfectly against his body. It almost was like he was reading Yuuri’s mind.

When the lyrics proclaimed the importance of not letting the chance of a lifetime pass by because all of this will end, Yuuri knew with certainty that Calliope had sampled his emotional state. His smile grew, softening from the hard edge into joy. If Yuuri thought he was having fun before, it was nothing compared to this. When the song rose into elation, he took Viktor into a large, loping spin, clearing a circle for an exhibition in the middle of the throng of dancers. Not that Yuuri noticed. His attention was focused singularly on the god in his arms. The way Viktor’s hair filtered around his face, catching the colorful lights, fascinated Yuuri and more than once he caught himself staring.

This close to Viktor, his personal scent closed around Yuuri, the sweet, tangy intoxication caressing Yuuri like the finest silk brushing his chest, back, neck, arms. Everywhere Yuuri felt illuminated, shining with the sun held in his arms. A study in contrasts, the cool moon partnered with the brilliant sun. If he had the option to look at himself, he would have not recognized the softness of his expression and the blush dusted across his cheeks.

never have i met someone who has made me want to love myself more than he did. despite his height and the gap between his front teeth he loved himself. many times did i buckle over laughing over the comments he’d make, saying how beautiful he was. and he was. god was he beautiful. i trully didn’t know people like him actually existed. ones who could have been carved out of marble they’re so perfect. it always baffled me how he could love someone like me, someone who had so many flaws. but he did. he saw beauty in me even when i couldn’t. over time i began loving who i was despite the flaws i may have. he gave me that. meeting him was a once in a lifetime chance and it ended up being exactly what i needed. he was exactly what i needed.

“The Teacher” And the story of this piece below, set in a fantasy world I’ve been developing…

In the ancient times, the gods came down from the stars. Pescadora the leopard, the child of two original star gods, was chosen as the protector of a massive and beautiful forest. She ate only fish and collected opalescent scales and shells in her hidden forest palace. Ancient people left her offerings of dried fish, shiny metal, and gemstones.

Thousands of years later, the gods had mostly been forgotten and the few who remained could be counted on a hand. Pescadora stayed hidden in her sprawling forest throughout history. She used her magic to confuse any visitors that meant harm, turning them around repeatedly until they no longer attempted to enter the forest. She disoriented armies, logging companies, kings and emperors. Over the millennia, her once strong body began to fail.

In a town by the edge of the forest, a woman gifted with magic, by the name of Maria, conceived a child. Maria has god’s blood in her veins, but humankind has all but lost any record of the gods by now. As a child she could re-animate dead birds and sprout trees from the ground. As an adult, her magic faded, but she never lost the sparkle in her eye and lives a joyful life with her husband, a professor at the local institute of higher education. On a sunny day, their daughter Mia arrived, and she grew into a shy, witty, and magical little toddler.

From the edge of the forest, Pescadora spied the girl with her failing eyes. Her bones creaked as she crept through the brush, and she knew she had few years left. Pescadora approached Maria at dusk and asked for her blessing to take Mia as an apprentice. Maria was enthralled by Pescadora and her heart was filled with awe and wonder. She could feel the magic hanging in the air around the leopard god and it took her back to her own days as a magical child. She brought Pescadora into her home and they sat with Mia together into the night. Maria’s husband, a man of science and knowledge, was difficult to convince and worried about his precious daughter’s safety. But Maria knew a chance like this was once in a lifetime. It was what she had always dreamed of as a child: a way to preserve her magic and use it for the greater good.

Slowly at first, Pescadora brought Mia into the forest, teaching her to funnel magic into her hands and feet so she could climb through the branches with ease. She learned to walk across the lake, speak with the rabbits, and heal minor wounds. One day when she was four, she began to sprout peacock feathers in a crest along her forehead. This was the mark of Pescadora’s magic flowing through her veins. The townspeople were bemused at first, but slowly accepted the presence of magic in their town. Her father was finally fully convinced one afternoon when he watched Mia fall, scrape her knee, and then instantaneously close the wound.

As Mia grew up and learned more and more about the duties of a forest god, Pescadora grew blind and frail. As she taught Mia, she funneled her magic into the child, losing more and more each day until she was hardly more than a mortal. Mia spent much of her time by her teacher, always with a hand on Pescadora’s side so the god could feel the world around her using Mia’s magic. The two talked endlessly, and Mia relayed the stories to her father, who compiled the tales of the gods into books. Maria, endlessly proud of her daughter, illustrated the books and distributed them across the country. Although most who read the stories thought them only children’s tales and folklore, the books brought wealth to the town, and town was able to petition the government for the forest’s preservation and protection for generations to come.

I don’t know if this is a shared belief or just a family thing, but my mother once told me that she heard that if you’re living an average life, without overwhelming success or overbearing wealth, it meant that you were someone great in your past life, and that this lifetime, you’re being given a chance to rest.

So don’t worry about not being famous or rich or someone ‘successful.’ Take this time to rest and just enjoy the simple act of living.

Normal Horoscope:

Aries: Compassion is not finite, but daylight is. Give yourself time to rest.

Taurus: Get ready Taurus, you’re in for a night of romantic dual wielded 45s.

Gemini: Whats the rush? Nothing has happened but you can feel your heartbeat in your ears, you can feel your eyes dilate. Literally nothing has changed but your body seems convinced that you are going to die any second.

Cancer: A shot glass full of bee husks and dried flower petals.

Leo: Nobody really cares that you’re not one for fighting. Preparation is its own reward.

Virgo: A little bird with no skin told me you know where you’re headed, that you have a good head on your shoulders. I didn’t trust them. No offense.

Libra: Dont mistake power for trust.

Scorpio: No sense in arguing over the supposed opinions of a dead man. Dig him up and ask him why dont you? Its a once in a lifetime chance.

Ophiuchus: There is elegance in simplicity, but simplicity can get real boring real fast.

Sagittarius: Its time to fuck around with that thing you’ve been thinking about fucking around with.

Capricorn: You’ve forgotten when their birthday is. This is a good thing.

Aquarius: There is nothing more suspicious than someone who says they have your best interests at heart.

Pisces: You will see a cool picture of a plague doctor this week. Hell yeah.

Oh, Darling

Prompt: What happens when the daughter of Wendy Darling and the son of Captain Hook meet? Chaos ensues.
Rating: T
Warnings: None, but does Harry Hook being a major flirt count?
A/N: I thank my friend Ella for helping inspire me to do this! This one’s for you, ya dork. Italics is Harry Hook’s point of view.

“No. Absolutely not.”

Three of the infamous villain kids and one feisty daughter of Mulan stood in front of you, swords in hand and dressed in their old clothes from the isle. “Why would you ever want to go back to the Isle? And why me?”

Lonnie rolled her eyes before tossing you a sword, which you swiftly caught. “Y/N, why wouldn’t we ask you? You’re one of the best people in the school who can actually handle a sword!”

The sword’s metal gleamed in the light and you remembered it all. The secret “dance” classes and sneaking out of your home to escape your mother’s wrath and embrace the exhilarating feel of a sword. It was better than any feeling you had ever felt and you never wanted to let go of it. All the years of training and running led up to this. You could finally prove to your mother that you didn’t need a prince or a saviour. You wanted to become the saviour.

Against all judgement, two words escaped your mouth and it was set.

“I’m in.”

The ride to the Isle of The Lost was a jungle of nerves. What if you were caught? What if you got killed? What if?

You were shook out of your thoughts and questions when Evie squealed. “We’re here!”

The moment you stepped out of the limo, you immediately wanted to get back in and go back to the safe comforts of your dorm room at Auradon Prep. But then… what kind of hero backed out of an adventure like this? It was the chance of a lifetime.

You hesitantly took another step forward. It wasn’t as bad as you thought. It was the feel of the place that gave you chills. Shadows lurked everywhere and somewhere off in the distance, you swore you heard screaming.

Jay saw you gawking at it all and laughed. “Welcome to the Isle, Y/N.”

You smiled back and laughed as well. Excitedly, you took your sword back from Lonnie as she passed around the weapons. You knew you shouldn’t be this excited about an impending fight but you couldn’t control yourself. Finally, a chance to prove yourself.

With one last look at the gleaming island of Auradon, you ran off with Evie, Jay, Carlos, and Lonnie. The party was about to start.

Harry Hook’s P.O.V.

Uma’s loud voice boomed as she yelled orders at the rest of the crew, her menacing tone encouraginng the rest to work even faster. No one wanted to face the wrath of the sea witch’s daughter. Even Gil seemed to scrub at the planks faster.

Harry glanced one last time at Auradon’s very own Prince Ben and growled. He wanted nothing more than to slaughter him already, but alas. Uma’s orders.

“Harry!” Uma called you over as a familiar band of misfits entered. They were here. Finally. Now the real fun can start.

“WELCOME!” Harry shouted, excited and grinning maniacally. He scanned over his former fellow villain kids and spotted a couple new kids. Must be some of those prissy, pink students from Auradon. He was about to go forward, but then he saw her.

She was stunning. A look of bravery and fiery passion was in her eyes, and he was intrigued. A sword was in her hand and she looked as ready as ever. For a moment, he felt as if his heart was taken by the Queen of Hearts herself.

He wanted to have her.

The ship was actually very impressive. That wasn’t what attracted her though. It was the crew. Now he knew why Evie, Mal, Jay, and Carlos were somewhat worried. They looked threatening. You held a tighter grip on your sword. You weren’t taking any chances today.

A guy in a red leather jacked and a striking red hat displayed his arms out and grinned at them, like a shark waiting to bite. “WELCOME!”

He looked familiar… as if you’ve seen him from another world. Suddenly, you remembered who he was.

Captain Hook’s son.

The hook. The red. The hat. It was him. The son of the man your mother oh-so-loathed. Your mother’s stories were true. You never fully understood why a simple sea captain scared her, but now you knew. The insane glint in his eye, the pure determination. Hell, you would’ve run out of there if it weren’t for your friends. You quickly recomposed yourself, unaware that the son of Hook was staring at you as well.

Mal and Uma kept negotiating with Ben and the wand, and every minute you were there you grew increasingly uneasy. You just hoped Uma wouldn’t notice that it wasn’t the real wand.

You gasped out a sigh of relief when Uma accepted the wand and Ben was traded for it. Now it was time to go. The next thing you knew, Uma was angrily yelling and you all booked it out of there.

One minute you were running, then suddenly, a hook was placed against your throat. “Not so fast, Darling.”

You examined your options then drew your sword, quickly elbowing him then pressing your own sword to his throat. “Not so fast either, huh, Hook?”

Chaos ensued around you, the rest of Uma’s pirate crew battled it out with the other VK’s and Lonnie. You focused on your opponent in front of you, and leaped forward for another attack.

He quickly dodged it then smirked, “You’re quite feisty for a Darling,” he lunged forward for another blow, then knocked your sword to the ground. “I like it. The name’s Harry Hook.”

You rolled your eyes at him then took your sword back. “I’m not really in the mood for introductions. We’re kinda in the middle of a fight, if you haven’t noticed.”

Harry chuckled as he tried to land another blow on you, quickly whisking his hook away from danger as you tried to knock it off of him. “The only thing I’ve noticed so far is how beautiful you are. No wonder Peter Pan took your mother.”

“Flattery won’t get you anywhere, Hook.” You finally managed to get the infamous hook and dangled it in his face for a few seconds then threw it somewhere around. “It’s Y/N by the way.”

Laughing, you ran off to your other friends as the confused lieutenant jumped into the water in search for his hook. You felt guilt for a moment then shook it off. He deserved it!

You took a smoke bomb from Evie and smashed it on the ground then ran for it, never looking back. You thought about Hook’s son though. Maybe someday…

Harry jumped out of the water, in search for you and eager to get revenge (and maybe your number). All he saw, however, was Uma’s angry form and the rest of the pirate crew defeated. He growled to himself then stared at Auradon.

“We’ll meet again someday, Darling.”
