8 Things Successful Students Do

Hey everyone! A lovely man named Mike Strangstalien, MA, MFT, LPC, NCC decided to compile a list of 8 things successful people do. He has been working on this list since 1994 and continues to update this list as he does more research. I decided to share some of his amazing work here with you all by summarizing his main points. Enjoy and good luck!

1. They raise their hand in class.

Now, this may seem trivial and sometimes you’re left with the question, “How can I speak up in class if I don’t even know what I don’t know?”. However, its been proven that people who raise their hand and ask questions tend to do better. If you are unsure of a question to ask, a good technique is to go home and review the material and the next day at the beginning of class, ask your question. This not only gets you to actively participate in class, but you begin to think about the information you learned and are able to commit it to long term memory.

2. They establish routine and structure.

During the day you should try to complete your homework so that at night you can spend your time studying, reviewing and consolidating. Its been proven that studying something before bed can commit it to long term memory. Doing work at night when you’re tired can lead to poor performance and may not commit things to memory if its the first time you’re seeing the information.

Also, try to go to bed BEFORE 1:30 am! Why is this important? Your serotonin is used up during the day (about 90%)  and is reassembled if you get to bed by 1:30. If you go to bed past 1:30 twice in a row, you miss your key opportunity to replace it and you’re left with only 10%! Do this again and you’re down to only 1%. This affects your concentration, focus, attention, motivation and memory.

3. They go to office hours.

Those who go to office hours at least 8 times during the semester yield, on average, 0.5-1.2 grade points HIGHER than their non-attending counter parts. The main reason people don’t go to office hours is a fear of looking “dumb”. However, if you just admit to your professor or TA that you’re completely lost, they can help re-teach. Remember to be honest about your confusion because otherwise they may start their explanation off the assumption that you already know something and you’ll have wasted your time and your professor’s. This can be the difference between a C and an A!

4. They prepare for each lecture.

Preparation for each lecture is essential. Begin by reviewing any information from the last lecture within 24 hours of first receiving this information, otherwise you lose valuable time to commit it to long term memory. Additionally, quick read assigned readings so that the lecture can consolidate what you read. After the lecture, spend about 5 minutes summarizing the major points and look up any vocabulary you didn’t recognize. This all compiles into the three-read principle. 1. Read the textbook (or other materials) beforehand. 2. Reread after the lecture and try to find the main points in the reading. 3. Reread a third time and write notes as though you plan to teach the information. This means simplifying and not writing down unnecessary information.

5. They remain actively involved when learning, attending lecture, and while studying.

I have a post about active studying techniques which you can find here. Active learning requires not only that you consciously try to pay attention, but also that you maintain your motivation to learn the material, the willingness to complete the tasks at hand needed to learn it, and saying to yourself, “I am excited to learn something new and I am thankful that I have the opportunity to do it”. Remember, there are kids in other countries literally dying for the right to an education. Your education is luxury, not a right. Additionally, every 15 minutes, stop and ask yourself, “how does this fit into the main idea,” and “what is it that I just read and how can I form study questions from it?”.

6. They take responsibility for their learning.

Although your professor is there to provide you with the information, it is not their job to make sure you learn it. Often times students fail because they expect the professor to try hard to help them. This is a harmful way of thinking and it can lead to failed exams. Those who take responsibility will make sure they seek help when they need it and they will make sure they search for resources outside of what is provided. If you’re really struggling with a concept, try Kahn Academy, YouTube or asking a TA. Its up to you to earn the A, not your professor. Also, keep track of your own grades and assignments that you turn in. This way if you need to see someone for help, you’re not disadvantaged because you waited until the grades were updated online after you threw away graded papers.

7. They understand the work load and are prepared to study 7 days a week.

Not everyone can study for hours on end every day. For this reason, those who are successful make sure they break down their studying into 25 minute intervals. Additionally, make sure you touch on this information every single day to keep your brain ready for the class when it comes time and you can avoid procrastination. You also need to be prepared for repeated exposure. This means reviewing the same material 3-7 times. This highly increases your likelihood to not only learn the information for exam, but not become guilty of the “pump-and-dump”. This is especially helpful for anyone pursuing medical school or graduate school.

8. They have no use for negative self-talk and they are honest with themselves.

You cant commit things to memory if you feel down or you are angry with yourself! Those who are successful maintain the mentality of, “I know that hard work and commitment will lead to success,” and, “I am capable, intelligent, and worthy of excellent grades”. They also understand that any grade they receive is earned and not given. Additionally, they understand that even at the end of the day, if they get bad grades they know for a fact that they tried their hardest. Self-criticism can be more harmful than good. Never scold yourself for missing homework, doing bad on an exam, or being confused. Instead, search for ways to actually CHANGE your behavior. A change in you mentality may sound silly, but it may be the difference between having the motivation to study a little harder and laying in bed feeling bad about yourself. BE HONEST. If you are really struggling and going to office hours and studying isn't helping, drop your pride and try to find a tutor. If a tutor isn’t in the books for you due to financial situations, explain this to your professor and see if you can schedule more one-on-one time.

anonymous asked:

I'm sorry for asking this and I feel really ignorant, but why do you suggest volunteering at soup kitchens as part of political action? I mean obviously it's a good thing to do but I guess I don't really see how it connects to political progress, maybe because I'm new to politics. Sorry to bother you 😬

Mutual Aid, or Dual Power, has long been a major (and underrated) aspect of radicalism.  By focusing on the needs of the working class at a time when the government is ignoring them, radicals show people that they don’t need to rely on the charity of the government, on the well wishings of the rich, that the working class can help itself.  In a time when the welfare state is being destroyed, coming together and feeding each other, clothing each other, helping each other not out of guilt but out of solidarity is not only deeply necessary, to prevent people from being hurt, from dying, from going without food, is desperately important.

But, organizationally and internally to the left, mutual aid is also very important because it keeps us grounded in day to day issues.  A protest comes, happens, and disappears the next day, and it might have succeeded it might have failed but the complete focus on these actions can lead to self serving organizational perspectives that center just on these actions.  Replace “actions” with “elections” and you have the perspective of political parties.  Getting really organized requires a day to day interaction between people in our alienated society.  You look at the history of syndicalism (radical unionism, related to anarchism) and you’ll see in the background of most of these organizations the existence of a massive network of mutual aid organizations.

Beyond this, historically dual-power and mutual aid, in showing that the working class can help itself, shows the possibility of a world based not on capitalist accumulation but on people serving each other’s needs.

SUGA’s answers

Q1: Hobbies or things you’ve been into to spend your days off?
A1: When I have days off, I want to do those so-called ‘ordinary’ things. Such as going to a cafe by myself, meeting up with friends. Having an ordinary daily life is very important to me. I won’t do anything special just because I’m on my days off. For me, spending my days off while relaxing is more important.

Q2: Tell us your preferences and tastes in fashion!
A2: Rather than getting different types of clothes, I’m the type that if I like or love something, I’ll use it for a long time. Since debut, because of my job, I’ve been wearing a lot of expensive clothes and clothes that I like. But I want to become one that can have their own style even when wearing simple clothes, so now I just choose simple clothes. Also, I don’t like to expose so I wear long sleeves even in the summer.

Q3: Your favorite scent?
A3: For cologne, I like sweet scents. Depending on my mood on that day, occasionally I’ll use a bit. But I haven’t finished using one bottle yet. Since I really like to drink coffee, it makes me feel calm when I smell the aroma of coffee. To me, coffee is like a substitute of water, it’s indispensable.

Q4: Any Japanese film, drama, manga or other works that you like?
A4: My all-time favorite manga is ‘Slam Dunk’! It’s my favorite so I read it over again and again, I’ve read it for over 100 times. Most of the anime that I’ve watched when I was little, are Japanese anime.

SUGA is…

From JIN: He’s interested in clothes, furnitures and miscellaneous goods, but when he’s shopping, he’ll only buy equipment that’s related to music. As his roommate, only I know about this, it’s my treasured information. ♪

From V: Recently, Suga hyung is really interested in Japanese. I’ve seen him studying Japanese diligently. Also, I feel that the things Suga hyung talks about and the atmosphere became more interesting than before (laughs).

「MUSIC」

Encountered rap around when I was in primary school and began to get involved in making music. I’m still active and continuing to produce music. For someone boring like me, the only thing I can do is to make music, it can’t be separated from me.

「POSSIBILITY」

In the past I would look for answers either 0 or 100. For example, why do some people don’t like me? I worried about these things and I also showed my emotions on my face. But after I’ve accumulated a various of experiences, I could understand better about people’s sensitivity and values. I thought “people could have various of thoughts”, and I began to think that I want to open every possibility for myself.

「GRANDPA」

It’s a word that describes me (laughs). Since I rarely step forward (voluntarily), I’m discreet, quiet and I like to be alone. I don’t like to move around and I like to lie down.

Transgender Day of Visibility is an important and vital day to celebrate those of us who are living as our authentic selves.  We can stand united in pride rather than shame and show the world our strength through our vulnerability.  As Laverne Cox said, “It is revolutionary for any trans person to choose to be seen and visible in a world that tells us we shouldn’t exist.”  As our community gains more visibility, the hate and misunderstanding of who we are becomes more visible as well.  Murder rates and hate crimes against our community, especially trans women of color, have risen each year.  Rejection from friends and family often leads to homelessness.  Children face bullying, harassment, and high suicide rates.  Many of us experience workplace discrimination, live well beyond the poverty level, and we can still legally be fired in 32 states simply because we are transgender.  Lawmakers are introducing one bill after another that marginalize and attempt to exclude us from society.  Now, more than ever, visibility is necessary to help change hearts and minds.

I remember when my parents bought a computer and set up an internet connection when I was in Jr. High.  I was finally able to research why I felt like a girl trapped in a boy’s body.  I learned about the term transgender and that I wasn’t alone.  For the first time, I no longer felt like a freak or outsider.  I gained hope and strength through the stories of those who had chosen to be visible.  However, I still lived in fear of what my family and friends would think.  Suicide was a constant thought in my mind because I was tired of pretending to be who I wasn’t meant to be.  Societal norms and expectations weighed me down and I became an introvert.  I fought who I was and lived in shame and fear until I was 29.  I had been married for 7 years and when that ended I was broken and defeated.  In my mind, I had two options, suicide or transition because I could no longer go through the motions and pretend to be happy.

Five years ago, I chose transition over suicide and it was the best decision I’ve ever made.  Even though I lost friends and family who disagreed with who I am, I gained so much more.  Truly loving myself for the first time allowed me to connect with others like I had never been able to before.  I was finally happy and free!  I chose to document my transition online and share my story with the world because I knew how important visibility was for others who were going through similar struggles.  This gave me the opportunity to inspire and encourage people to live their lives authentically and to love who they are.  The response I received was amazing and, in turn, it gave me the courage and confidence I needed to be more visible offline.  I began sharing my story with almost everyone and the friendships I developed have been rewarding and eye opening.

Over the years, I have been asked why I do not move past saying I am transgender and live my life as a woman.  My response, is that visibility is vital and I am proud of who I am.  To me, the term transgender doesn’t define my gender identity, it defines how hard I have fought to be the woman I am today.  Sharing our stories and our struggles truly opens hearts and minds to change and acceptance.  I have learned that most people, when given the chance, do not care about labels.  They care about the person that is front of them and the connection that is developed.  I’m thankful for a day that celebrates who I am despite the fear and hate directed at us but we need to celebrate who we are every day.  Life is a gift and can truly be amazing if you allow yourself to love who you are with unapologetic authenticity.  Together we can make a difference in this world and slowly we will make it a safer, better place for those following in our footsteps.

Okay guys, I just really think it’s important for us to savour these last two days.

These last two days where we still don’t know what’s going to happen.

These last two days in uncertainty.

These last two days coming up with theories that may or may not become true.

These last two days frantically rewatching promos to find clues.

These last two days rereading as many theories, as quickly as we can.

These last two days picking each other’s brains for suspects.

These last two days with our favourite characters.

These last two days with our OTPs.

These last two days with Pretty Little Liars.

Viria you're a ray of sunshine what happened to you, you went directly from salty (very reasonable and understandable salt) to well, the embodiment of hugs? Kinda? I'm so happy for you and I'm glad everything is going fine, really

Sasha happened to me, ahah:”D

Thank you! I’m glad to hear I’m kind of growing! I just have more important things to care about these days? I used to spend a lot of time on tumblr, and tumblr makes me salty almost every time I spend a lot of time using it. Even if you try avoiding the negativity here it’s still showing and you soak it in a lot. Now I just realize how unimportant it really was.

I still get salty sometimes anyway, but these days I no longer feel miserable and unhappy to be honest..I have been turned into a total sap, what can I say:”D I have no regrets.

If you want to unstan...

I’ve seen many of you losing interest or more like beginning to change your stanning experience. When I first began to read things about the industry & stuff, I sort of got this discourage as well. It hurt me to know that my idols’ lives weren’t as real as I had in mind. But now, more woke than I could ever imagine, I realise… After all they’ve gone through, I admire them even more & how lucky, how truly lucky I got when these five ladies entered into my life.

They’re not robots. Yes, they’ve gone through things we would consider extremist & unrealistic but let me tell you something: We fell in love with 5 beautiful humans who grant us access to a little piece of their hearts in every interview, in every performance, in every snap story.

Just because their lives happen to be quite frenetic at times or happen to be quite hard to understand for us fans, doesn’t mean they feel any less, that they are any less normal. Well, in this latter, maybe I’m wrong… You know what? Forgot what I just said, they’re not normal, they’re exceptional.

“Not all heroes wear capes” As cliché as it may sound, it’s nothing else but the truth. The five of them have saved more lives than we could picture. They’ve helped so many souls out there (including mine) to heal whatever wounds we had, wounds crying out desperately for attention. To mend whatever broken piece we had inside, that kept on thickening the cut. They’ve been there every step of that unsteady path. Even if it’s them doing the dumbest video, while watching it you can’t fight that grin. You can’t even try, cause you know damn well won’t resist to those five goofy smiles . Camila was right, some people don’t understand one of the many meanings behind idolisation.

Days ago Del/trashpandaballs/raccooninpredicaments left Tumblr becuse of Cyber Bulling. He was being accused of being a pedophile, supporting pedophilia/incest just because of a ship he used to make content for 2 years ago.

What we ship doesn’t describe us as a person or the way we act irl. Just because you ship TomTord it doesn’t mean you would like to have love-hate rationship with someone you hate. Just because you ship the Osomatsus or pinecest It doesnt mean you would be in a relationship with your twin or even accept that kind of relationship irl.

Because It’s fictional and because It’s the Internet.

Anyone who ever entered Del’s blog knows that he’s not a bad a person and what happend to him was totally unfair and unnecessary. So along with @yi2335 we created a “Del Appreciation week” to remind people who Del actually was.

It’ll start on March 1st and finish on March 7th, one drawing a day.

Day 1: Draw Del *

Day 2: Favourite Del OC (Ex: Pay, Pudding, Dylan, Sarah)

Day 3: Au Day! (which includes all AUs Del had created or participated in. Ex: Commie Family, Reverse AU, Traitor AU, Wall-e AU, bakery AU [originally owned by @cartooncommubackup], etc)

Day 4: Picture redraw

Day 5: Au Day! (again bc there’re too many of them haha)

Day 6: Write a post to Del telling him how you feel about this *

Day 7: Free Day!

Important:
"*“ : these are days that aren’t directly related to Eddsworld. Please avoid using the tag to prevent trouble. :)

Special Thanks
To @sugar-syringe, to the guys of Eddsworld Fans en Español, to Del and to you.

5 Reasons Why The 21st Century Will Be The Best One Ever For Astrophysics

“There’s always a temptation to think that our best days are behind us, and that the most important and revolutionary discoveries have already been made. But if we want to comprehend the biggest questions of all — where our Universe comes from, what it’s truly made of, how it came to be, where it’s headed in the far future, how it will all end — we still have work to do. With unprecedented telescopes in size, range, and sensitivity set to come online, we’re poised to learn more that we’ve ever known before. There’s never a guarantee of victory, but every step we take brings us one step closer to our destination. No matter where that turns out to be, the journey continues to be breathtaking.”

What does the future of astrophysics look like? Have we already made all of the fundamental discoveries we’re going to make? Is the rest just categorization of objects, identification of more examples of what’s already known, and minor refinements of the knowledge we already have? Or are there fundamental discoveries still to come, just waiting for us to reveal them? There are so many big questions still out there, and a great many of them have astrophysical consequences! In addition to new observatories, larger telescopes than ever, and problems like dark matter and the matter/antimatter asymmetry, there are five recent discoveries – within the last generation – that have significant implications for the Universe.

Come take a look at five of them: neutrino mass, the accelerating universe, exoplanets, the Higgs boson, and gravitational waves, and learn what the future holds!
