Kylo Ren + locations: the Finalizer

The powerful flagship shared by General Hux and Kylo Ren, the dagger-shaped Finalizer is nearly twice the length of an Imperial-era Star Destroyer. The first of the new Resurgent class constructed in violation of treaties with the New Republic, the Finalizer’s heavy weapons are augmented by two starfighter wings, a hundred assault craft and a full legion of stormtroopers. Her turbolasers are more powerful and faster to recharge than Imperial-era weapons, a product of kyber crystals harvested in the Unknown Regions.

I did another playthrough of Episode Prompto (on my own this time) and took it upon myself to transcribe all the audio files and writings in chronological order. Spoilers (and a VERY long post overall) below the cut! Also, please let me know if I’ve missed anything!

The impossibly creepy, serpentine design for the supreme Cylon leader in the original Battlestar Galactica. He reminds me of the Skeksis from the Dark Crystal. 

Imperious Leader’s design is unique among the Cylons because he was a hold over from the original concept. Originally, the Cylons weren’t going to be robots at all, but a sinister serpentine reptile race. Since Battlestar Galactica was originally conceived as having biblical parallels and was “the Bible in space” (hence Biblical names like Adama and Sheba), the Cylons were serpent aliens. 

Apparently, changing the Cylons to robots was a decision made surprisingly late in pre-production, when Imperious Leader had already been built. The finished Cylons still seem like vaguely Biblical enemies, but in a New Testament mold: they look Roman, and are called “Centurions.”

Marxism-Leninism-Maoism (MLM) is best described as the culmination of the historical, theoretical, and practical advancements of class struggle. This is why you’ll often see it described as the “highest stage” of Marxism. In relation to Marxism-Leninism (ML) it can best be described as a continuity and rupture from ML, meaning while it follows the same theoretical and practical trend, it also introduces a series of new contributions which make MLM a qualitatively different ideology beyond ML. 

So, following the legacy of ML, MLM upholds the advancements of Marxism made by V.I. Lenin and the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Without getting into them these include: 

  • Marxist understanding of capitalist-imperialism
  • Marxist Theory of the State
  • The Vanguard Party
  • Democratic Centralism
  • The Right of Nations to Self-Determination

(Foundations of Leninism is a good all-encompassing work if you are interested in ML before Mao). Now, Leninism goes beyond just Lenin’s words and so ML includes the historical context of its theories- the Russian Revolution, the line struggle between Trotsky/Bukharin and Stalin in the Communist Party, Five-year plans according to a proletarian state, and, sadly, the foundations of revisionism which laid the groundwork for capitalist restoration in the USSR- an event that would shape much of Mao’s theoretical contributions. So to avoid making this super text-heavy, I’m gonna break them into bullet points (with explanations, of course).

  • New Democracy: In countries oppressed by imperialism, the material conditions for socialism and the development of the productive forces can not be completed by the bourgeoisie because of conflicting class interests. This necessitates that proletariat form a United Front of several classes against imperialism with the Communist Party at the helm. The New Democratic Revolution allows for a “telescoping” of a bourgeois revolution and proletarian revolution so as to rapidly free a country from imperialism and develop productive forces so as to smash feudal and colonial relations, carry out an agrarian revolution, and prepare for socialist construction. This is only applicable in countries that are oppressed by imperialism. [X]
  • Mass Line: A method of organizing where members of the Communist Party listen to the concerns/wants of the masses, study them under revolutionary theory, and formulate concrete solutions which are then propagated among the masses. It can be summed up with the phrase “from the masses, to the masses”. This was not only to ensure that the Communist Party maintains a political line in touch with their base, but to ensure that the theory of the Party was based on practical experience and investigation. [X]
  • The Permanence (or Law) of Contradiction: Contradictions are a fundamental element of nature and society. Some are antagonistic or violent, some are non-antagonistic. Some take primacy over others (such as the contradiction between imperialism and oppressed nations being primary over the contradiction between proletariat and bourgeoisie). Mao explained that dialectics has one fundamental law- the unity and struggle of opposites- with the other laws being expressions of this main one. Mao saw that struggle is constant and unity is temporal- this can be summed up with the phrase “one divides into two”, showing the process of conflict/change inherent in all things and the fact that contradictions will continue even after unity is achieved. This was a break from the previously dominant trend of Marxist philosophy which essentially said “two combine into one”. [X]
  • Protracted People’s War (PPW): The armed branch of the Party, the People’s Army, should be deeply entrenched within the masses. PPW covers a general three-stage process. The first, strategic defensive, is the establishment of base areas and the building of dual power (a concept originally developed by Lenin in his work “On Dual Power”), while revolutionaries avoid directly engaging the state and warfare is done very sporadically. The second stage, strategic equilibrium, happens when the proletarian power built in base areas rivals the power of the current bourgeois state. The third, strategic offensive, involves the capturing of larger bases of power by the People’s Army and eventually conquer state power on a nation-wide scale. Did you notice those three things i put in bold? Those are what Mao called the 3 “magic weapons” of the proletariat in revolution. This method of revolution differs from the insurrectionist method (where the urban workers rise up during a period of crisis allowing them to seize state power) and the focoist method (employed famously in the Cuban Revolution where guerrillas do not have an explicit contact with the masses). [X] [X] [X]
  • Cultural Revolution: The recognition that the bourgeois ideological superstructure lingers under socialism is one that derives from Mao’s recognition that class struggle continues under socialism (Mao even said it intensifies). While the system of ownership changed with socialist revolution, another revolution should be launched to help change the ideological superstructure, to fight for proletarian ideological supremacy over the bourgeoisie. [X]
  • Class Struggle under Socialism and that Socialism is not a distinct Mode of Production: Socialism is not a mode of production like capitalism, feudalism, or communism. It is a transitional society where the proletariat holds state power and there is social ownership of property commanded by economic planning. Because of these many contradictions that continue after a revolution (as one divides into two, remember) socialism cannot be considered a completely separate mode of production, only as a transitionally dominant mode of production and set of social relations, still bound up in the class struggle. Many MLs and other socialists focus solely on the legal form of ownership- i.e. who actually owns the means of production (the state or private entities). But this legalistic separation was never professed by Marx or Lenin. This mechanistic view of socialism leads towards forms of revisionism like the “theory of productive forces” which was the justification for capitalist restoration in both the USSR and China. Maoists stress the importance of the relations of production over the ownership or development of productive forces. For Maoists, what is most important is political line- whether or not proletarian politics are in command or not. [X] [X] [X]

MLM extends beyond just Mao however. The recognition of the qualitative advancement of his contributions by the Peruvian Communist Party and the Revolutionary Internationalist Movement in the late 80s and early 90s- the period in which “actually existing socialism” was collapsing- stands to show that MLM is the principal, preeminent force of revolution in our current era.

I found it an incredibly interesting interview, and I really wished to share it with as many people as possible, so I decided to translate it into English. As in the original interview both speakers refer to Sebastian as ‘Sebas’ (セバス), I have also left it as it is. Click [here] for the original Japanese interview.

Interview with Furukawa Yuuta on “Kuroshitsuji – Noah’s Ark Circus"

With the new announcement of your recast as Sebas, fans of the series have been absolutely ecstatic.

“Thank you very much. I have received quite many letters from fans, many of which included comments such as “I have been awaiting “Kuroshitsuji” with great anticipation”. I am very honoured to receive such kind words, though also feeling the pressure anew of wishing to live up to the fans’ expectations.”

The Kuroshitsuji musical franchise started in 2009, and from the latest run of “Lycoris that blazes the Earth 2015” on, the baton of Sebastian Michaelis’ role has been passed on to you. How do you experience the pressure of diving midway into a hit series?

“Pressure indeed. Well… even though I ‘succeeded’ the role, I think that I have been able to put all my heart into it. Although for me this is merely the second time I will be playing Sebas, I feel that along with my wish to suture even more deeply with this character, I have also come to realise again the daily worries while reading the comics and studying the script.”

As expected, you turn to the original comics for basis?

“My wish is to deliver to the audience that very experience that is left inside me from reading the Kuroshitsuji comics as a fan myself. It was like that the last time too, but this time I want to leave out all unnecessary things and wholeheartedly devote myself to delivering and expressing the inspirations and impressions I got from the original comics. That, I value the most at present.

This time the story is based on the original comic’s Circus Arc. From the published main visual images, I was left with a very deep impression.

“As many circus members are portrayed and it fuels the anticipations towards the assorted characters and highlight scenes… I have secretly been hoping that the audience would be thrilled. Visually speaking, I think this episode is very befitting for a stage adaptation. Just with one single glance… well, it’s a circus! The trapeze scene especially, but many other performances are incredibly difficult, but I shall take on the challenge. I am pleased that the trio of the mansion (Bard, Finny and Meylin) are going to have a great début as well, and I look very much forward to opposing Teruma’s William. Naturally, I have great hopes towards the songs the new musical will bring us.”

It’s the first time on stage for Uchikawa Reo who plays Sebas’ young master, Ciel Phantomhive.

“I have only met him a few times up to this point, but a bond has already grown between us within which we can talk without any masks. I heard that this is going to be his first stage performance, so I hope that before anything else he can enjoy the life on stage. To this end, I… well, ‘because’ of Sebas, just like him, I have come to want to stay by his side and support him. I want to make him smile. I told him” if there’s any kind of sweets you like, I shall present to you a full box, my Lord.”(Laughs)”

Mr. Furukawa, just a few days back you have successfully finished your performances in the musical “1789, Les Amants de la Bastille”, and now you will also play in great hit musicals like “Elisabeth (Rudolf)” and “Romeo and Juliet (Romeo)”. And along those, you will also be playing in the so called 2.5D musical of “Kuroshitsuji”?

“I have not really linked those at all. Just purely, every staging has its characteristics and charms, and are absolutely fun to watch.”

As a performer, is there something you feel especially strong about from experiencing both [musicals]?

“Strong… um… that is difficult. I can’t think of anything that strikes me especially, but I am absolutely certain that I will be able to gain a lot if I can become more and more active in activities within genres not restricted to these. I am sorry, I only managed to say things this abstract (laughs), but I’m sure it will all become a source of nourishment. Ah, more concretely I guess, some people who have seen me in “Kuroshitsuji” have thought “Let’s go watch the *Imperial Musicals (Elisabeth, 1789, etc.) next time,” and also, there are quite many similarities with “Kuroshitsuji” in the solemn aura as can be experienced in the historic play ‘Elisabeth’, so I think I have been able to bring that to live in the previous staging of “Kuroshitsuji”.”

In “Noah’s Ark Circus”, tragedies await to happen within the unique circus. Even though it will never have a happy end, that is the unshakable charm of “Kuroshitsuji”. What kind of Sebas will Circus Arc’s Sebas become, do you think?

“Generally speaking, I think I want to become one that is even more faithful to the original comic’s charms. Besides upholding the elegance and vigour of the character, I strive for a more subtle presence to become a truer demon. The brighter the spotlights shine, the more I wish to make Sebas’ shadows as the main character. Another point is, principally, Sebas looks down on human beings and makes fun of them.”

That is because besides not being a human, for a long, long time, he has witnessed and seen through the foolishness of human beings, right?

“Most likely. However, I really think that that very Sebas has been somewhat impressed on the inside from witnessing Ciel growing stronger and stronger as a human by going through all kinds of cases and tragic accidents. I personally think that the “while they may be foolish, the more they struggle, the stronger human beings become” is one very important theme within “Kuroshitsuji”. Therefore, I think that Sebas, although as a demon he thoroughly looks down on humans and merely makes fun of them, he treasures Ciel from the bottom of his heart… Sebas’ goal is then to solve this very contradiction for himself. It is my goal in turn, to accurately deliver to the audience the very ‘core’ of this series, to the point that they can truly feel the ‘unique master-servant-relationship’, an incredibly complicated, deeply and strongly entangled bond between Sebas and Ciel.”

I really look forward to the Circus Arc in which sheer elegance and cruelty are intertwined.

“The director Mr. Mouri has also said that he wants to “gradually remove all the pop-vibes”. That is definitely not to reduce the entertainment, instead it is to accentuate the… um, the darkness included, the world view that is unique to “Kuroshitsuji. We too will become one and work towards that very same goal in the new production.”

All of the following are Marxist tendencies. A more thorough explanation of Marxism itself, as well as brief biographies of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels will be incoming if I can actually manage to write them.

Marxism as applied and developed by Vladimir Lenin and later Joseph Stalin. Can be put under the broader label “Leninism”.

Some features of Marxism-Leninism include:

  • The idea that revolutions will occur first where the chains of imperialist Capitalism are weakest, not necessarily where the productive forces have been strongest, as has usually been held. Basically, revolution is more likely to occur first in poor, colonised countries.
  • The vanguard party - the idea that a disciplined organization of the most advanced members of the proletariat should train, lead, organize and steer the proletariat towards revolution.
  • The idea of a proletarian socialist state, used to suppress the bourgeoise and act as the dictatorship of the proletariat (dotp - this will be defined hopefully in an upcoming post) and build Socialism and the path to Communism.
  • Heavy emphasis on anti-imperialism.
  • Emphasis on developing productive forces in poor or backwards countries.


Marxism as applied and developed by Leon Trotsky and followers. Can be put under the broader label “Leninism”.

Some features of Trotskyism include:

  • The vangaurd party and the proletarian socialist state, as in Marxism-Leninism.
  • The idea of permanent revolution - that, especially in underdeveloped countries, revolution should be exported, especially to the more advanced capitalist countries before Socialism has a chance to be built.
  • The “broadly-based” mass party. The idea that the party should be more open to people joining and support a larger, more variant membership with ranging ideas, similar to Western political parties.
  • Strong opposition to Stalin and Marxism-Leninism, which is often called “Stalinism” by Trotskyists.
  • Support of revolution in “Stalinist” states.


Marxism (and sometimes not Marxism) as described by people who were opposed to Leninism and consider themselves to the “left” of Leninism (Marxism-Leninism and Trotskyism).

Features of Left-Communism include:

  • Emphasis on directly democratic workers councils.
  • Rejection of the idea of a Vanguard Party.
  • The idea that the dictatorship of the proletariat will not be a literal state but the revolution itself.
  • Rejection of party-based or otherwise hierarchiel organization.
  • (Often) Opposition to workers unions, which are seen as having become bourgeous tools.
  • Emphasis on revolution in advanced, capitalist countries.


A type of Marxism-Leninism, Maoism is Marxism-Leninism as applied and developed by Mao Zedong and others during the Chinese Revolution and followers since then.

Two types of modern Maoism are “Mao Zedong Thought (MZT)” and “Marxism-Leninism-Maoism (MLM)”. Explanations for what these are are out of the scope of this page, but hopefully will be written in the future.

Some features of Maoism include:

  • Emphasis on anti-revisionism. Maoists see the Soviet Union post-Stalin and China post-Mao as having abandoned Socialism and Marxism-Leninism and become “revisionist”.
  • Siding with China and Albania in the Sino-Soviet and Sino-Albanian split.
  • Cultural Revolution: The idea that bourgeois elements of society will have to be purged through occasional mass, popular revolutions of the common people against party beaurocracy and capitalist elements withing the party and government.
  • Heavy emphasis in general on mass movements of common people.


Pronounced Ho-ja-ism, Hoxhaism is anti-revisionist Marxism-Leninism as applied and developed by Enver Hoxha.

Hoxhaists rarely call themselves Hoxhaists, usually just “Marxist-Leninists”.

Some features of Hoxhaism include:

  • Heavy emphasis on anti-revisionism, Hoxhaists tend to see the only Socialists states as having been the pre-Krueschev Soviet Union and Albania under Enver Hoxha.
  • Siding with China and Albania in the Sino-Soviet and Sino-Albanian split.
  • Rejection of Maoism as being revisionist.

So the main character of my story is the child of an Indian immigrant to the US and an African-American man - I thought that maybe her parents gave her a western first name (Susan) and an Indian middle name (Sona), because they wanted her to "Fit in better" while still having some connection to her heritage - is that okay?

It’s fine. It makes sense, and I know a lot of families that do this and people that go by a more “western” style of their name in order to fit in better. It’s a product of imperialism and racism, of course, but it makes sense that they would do something like that in this case.

I talked about this a little in a previous post, but my father, from Nigeria, had the same idea for my sisters and I when he gave us more westernized names and Nigerian middle names, knowing how America works and how it treats the “other.” So I think it’s pretty realistic.

Do you know why Bretons are the shortest humans in the elder scrolls if they're supposed to be descendants of half elves? Like if they're a product of imperials and altmer for example, shouldn't they be taller? Just wondering...

This is an interesting question! They are (lore experts, correct me if I am wrong) the only Manmer race and are descendant of the Aldmer and Nedic (pre-Nords/Imperials?) races, not the modern Altmer and Imperials (although the Altmer evolved from the Aldmer and the Imperals from the Nedic). Altmer and Bosmer etc are evolved races of the Aldmer and like the Aldmer, the Altmer are tall (they resemble them the most) but in turn the Bosmer are relatively small. Why is that? Not explained either. (Although the “accusations” of the Altmer purposefully breeding to keep Aldmer features within their race could explain the height difference)

Someone has suggested that perhaps the Aldmer and Nedic had some recessive “short” genes that evolved when the two races mixed together and after a long time of evolution the result were the Bretons. I also saw someone suggest that in our world, human races that live near mountains or at mountains tend to be genetically smaller than those on mainlands/shores, so I don’t know if that’s something the creators thought about.

What is interesting about the Bretons is that in Arena, they were described as being tall (and dark haired), but in later games they are relatively small and in Skyrim, the female Breton is the smallest out of all races alongside with female Khajiits. They are not THAT small though; in Skyrim Khajiit, Dunmer and Imperial males are just as tall as Bretons and Bosmer males are even smaller. So the size of Bretons does get exaggerated a lot.

Anyway, the answer is, no one really knows, it’s not really explained in the lore. I personally like to think that with their skills in magic, they had to give up something physical to make room for the magic genes so they started getting smaller with every generation :DD Most likely the game developers just wanted each race to be clearly different from another and with human races that resemble each other (Nords, Imperials and Bretons) maybe they chose to make the Bretons signature look to be that they’re small with small features etc. But genetics? When you take that road explaining things starts to get hard! :D
