This fall a number of staff members from NARA’s two Preservation Programs divisions—College Park, Md., and St. Louis, Mo.—attended a free workshop presented by the Image Permanence Institute. IPI hosted the workshop, titled “Sustainable Preservation Practices for Managing Storage Environments,” in four cities around the country. At the Chicago workshop, IPI’s Jeremy Linden, above, discussed how to set up an integrated environmental management team. The workshop focused on how to save energy and still maintain an archivally sound environment. Topics included the basics of preservation environments, understanding how HVAC systems work, and environmental monitoring. We hope to use some of what we learned to make sure our archival facilities are running as cost-effectively and energy-efficiently as possible.
