“People tell me, “You don’t know what you have till it’s gone.” I wish I listened to that sooner.” – Cole Pendery
Not everyone you meet in life will stay forever, there will be times when one has to say goodbye but if two people, really care about each other, distance is no longer an issue because no matter where they are, they will always have each other. Cole and his girlfriend, Emily was sitting on a swinging hammock chair; their feet were firmly placed on the ground but they pushed and pulled to enjoy that short cool breeze the swing gave them. She rested her head on his shoulder; the atmosphere around them was sullen.
“Say something.” She said softly
Cole sighed and wrapped his arm around her shoulder and held her tight in his one arm embrace. Emily was moving to Canada tomorrow making this the last day they’ll ever spend together. It wouldn’t be if Cole wasn’t starting a world tour with IM5 very soon and if the tour included Canada, but it didn’t. He held her hand tight and grazed his thumb over the back of her hand.
“What do you want me to say?”
“Anything. I don’t want to remember the last day we spend together just sitting in my backyard and swinging.” She pulled her head back and looked at Cole.
He lifted one eyebrow and shifted his eyes over to Emily. He pulled his back away from the swing and turned his body facing Emily. He smiled and placed a section of her hair behind her ear and used the back of his hand to caress her face. He took both of her hands and gave them a tight but gentle squeeze.
“I don’t want to let you go.” He said bluntly but she knew the answer to that.
She heavily inhaled and let out a breath, she was about to turn away but Cole pulled her hands in the opposite direction. “I know that I have to but, I mean, our relationship. I still want us to stay together.” Cole said as he stared into her eyes. The wind blew gently through their hair and filled the silence.
“You know that I want that to but-” He pulled her hands closer towards him “But nothing. Just because you’re leaving doesn’t mean that we have to let go of what we have.” He said and sighed.
He let the wind carry his words and he adjusted his beanie forward, Emily was still and quiet and waited to hear what Cole was going to say because the look in his eyes told her there was much more than that. He scooted closer towards her and pulled her head so that his lips could touch hers. He pulled away and it pained him when he did, his forehead touched hers and he gave a soft and chuckle before he kissed her on the forehead.
“People tell me, “You don’t know what you have till it’s gone.” I wish I listened to that sooner. Emily, you’re more than just my girlfriend, you know that right?” She didn’t answer; she just waited for him to add on. “You’re my best friend, the reason why I do my best, the reason why I smile, you’re everything. And that’s why I can’t let you go.” He smiled and tilted her head up. His eyes water as he stared into her eyes once more. “I really don’t want to see you leave and I-” He was choking up.
Emily cupped his face in her hands and told him that everything will be okay. She swept his bangs over to the side and forced a smile for his sake. The swing creaked as it pulled back but the silence after that was unbearable and was incredibly loud.
“You want this to work, right?” She asked him and he nodded as he held onto her hand that held up his face. She gave a relaxing smile and moved her hands down to his neck. “Then we’ll make it work. Canada and L.A are only 5 hours apart by plane. My mom and your mom are best friends after all, I’m positive I can come visit during the summer.”
He smiled and nodded and tried to calm himself down “But until the summer, I want you, I want us, to always remember what we have right here and right now.” She smiled and wrapped her arms around his neck, he held her close to her, to hold onto her touch until summer returns.
“Nothing can make me forget what we have because it’ll always be with me.” She smiled as she gave him a kiss and slowly pulled away, keeping their lips inches apart. “Always.”
“I love you. I really do.” Cole said as his words touched her lips.
