is how, in terms of Emma, Hook is always referring to the future, whereas Neal constantly harks on and atones the past. This is obvious in the structure of both “romance origin” episodes, where Neal is a flashback and Hook is the present, but it’s also exemplified through dialogue.

It’s an interesting notion because when we’ve seen Hook lament the emptiness of his revenge, he said that he has nothing to look forward to–but when he speaks to Emma, he is doing exactly that. And she confirms it in the finale, when she tells him that he can be a part of something.
