Just curious, why did u say hip hop team is family unit? Haha I always thought hip hop team's dynamic was always less known about

Brooooooooooooooooooooo I will always wanna talk about hip hop team’s dynamic like I’ve talked about it before here but it’s not talked about nearly enough, so I’m gonna talk about it again.

It’s true that Hip hop unit’s dynamic isn’t really a big issue in the fandom. Overall, the inner workings and relationships are interesting to explore for Seventeen, but because there are so many people sometimes just focus on two people’s friendships instead of groups of people. Seventeen’s unit system provides an easy way to break down some of the personalities into groups and figure out what makes each person play the role they do in the overall group. One day, I’d like to see another One Fine Day-esque show for Seventeen, but instead of deserting them all on one island, they split up the units and force each unit to work and live independently of one another. It would be an interesting study of each unit’s dynamic and functioning. We only have small tastes of it so far, but one of the first places we really see it is in preparation for the mission of Episode 3 of Seventeen Project. We get to see the creative process behind each of the groups and the working dynamic as well as some individual personality traits. Usually when I reference performance team’s dynamics, I call back to this episode too because you really see how The8 ends up benefitting Hoshi’s creative process. We get a good taste for how performance unit arrangements work very visually and energetically, with lots of physical demonstrations and adjustments being made, but how vocal team contrasts that as more of a meeting style where they discuss and Woozi takes notes of necessary changes. Neither of them are a bad dynamic, in fact the dynamic fits the individual personalities of the team members as well as skill level and even learning styles. But when you look at it, Hip hop unit just really functions in a family dynamic.

Starting with Coups, who is really the dad of the group or even the oldest brother, there’s absolutely no question at all that he is the leader. He’s not overly controlling and he doesn’t demand the spotlight and final word over the other members at all, but there’s just something so reassuringly in control about him, as if at any given moment he could just say a word and the other members would listen and do as he says without a question. And less than half of that is his age and his status in the group, I think. The is the other members complete firm faith and trust in him and his decisions for the group. To that point, because he doesn’t run a dictatorship, he takes the time to think about the group and grow close to them and even play and joke around at the expense of his own authority at times. He’s willing to be knocked down a couple notches and let one of the other members play leader, not overly attached to a sense of pride or ego in being in charge. He goes out of his way to treat the members like his family, wether there’s 3 or 12 he’s in charge of. He makes time for all 13 members without neglecting his own unit and vice versa, and the members see that and respect him more for it, I think. It’s hard enough being leader once over, but twice is ridiculously difficult.

And then there’s Vernon who has somehow become the face of Seventeen’s hip hop line even though he’s the youngest. I’ve said it before, but there’s a lot of chance for jealousy in Seventeen, especially around Vernon from the other members of hip hop unit. He’s already begun releasing solo mixtapes and featurings of his own, while S. Coups is years older and has been training for years longer. They honestly have every chance to be bitter over that, but instead they’re super supportive. This was the first thing that tipped me into looking deeper into hip hop unit’s dynamic, particularly Wonwoo and Mingyu during a livestage of Lotto where they could’ve just let Vernon do his thing and rap and provided the parts they were supposed to in the background but instead they choose to bounce around stage and riff off the track and basically play hype men in support for their little brother so he knows he’s not alone up there on stage. Im not sure if you can see it in this fancam but at one point Mingyu steps back and just watches Vernon and grins as if he’s proud of him. You know, that dorky look Coups always gets when pretty much anyone does anything. At every opportunity, hip hop unit chooses to be proud of Vernon instead of jealous, and to be supportive instead of bitter when he makes a mistake.

There’s no judgement over anyone else, either. For instance, Wonwoo’s recent expedition into singing. Not once has any of the members of hip hop unit told him he’s not supposed to sing, he’s a rapper. Instead, they support him. The entire group is incapable of letting him sing his solo in Love Letter live without standing behind him and loudly going “ooooooooooOOOOOO”. Mingyu is never teased about his hobby in hairstyling or art, instead it’s incorporated into andromeda broadcasts, games, and even his drawings are made into stickers for albums sometimes. Instead of being the super masculine-ly hip hop unit that is only made up of super hardcore rappers, S. Coups encourages them to pursue their own interests and hobbies as well as rapping, which creates an environment of acceptance for the entire unit but also the entire group and leads to not cliques and clubs but Dino being allowed to take major rap sections of songs or Hoshi being able to do so much singing as to open the chorus of their title song. For a group that’s made to be fitted into boxes like units, they’re all surprisingly accepting and multitalented, and that’s not just something that happens. It’s an environment that starts with one person and is spread.

And Mingyu and Wonwoo are both just as essential to the group as Vernon and Coups, providing balance and structure. They’re such perfect contrasts that it’s hard to imagine one in a group without the other because it feels like they’d both pull to their extremes - Mingyu doing everything for everyone and trying his hardest to be his best and get everyone to be their best to the point of being overbearing and Wonwoo being casual and quiet to the point of being practically nonexistent. In reality, Meanie works out so well as a friendship because Mingyu and Wonwoo are direct contrasts to each other’s personalities and they maintain a stable balance between the two of them. Mingyu has a strong, silent charm that is hardly seen and Wonwoo has a loud, funny charm that is hardly seen. Early in the Adore U days, Wonwoo’s special talent was looking sexy while absent minded. Now, we’re discovering a side of Mingyu where he’s most sexy when he’s in charge of everything, running around, working, mr. capable. Even their vocal styles are contrasting but balancing when mixed together. They provide a sense of completion to hip hop unit, and while they may not be the spokesperson like S. Coups or the person always in the spotlight like Vernon, they’re content and secure as their place and they even manage to grow in their talents and personalities, exploring new aspects about themselves.

So, in conclusion, hip hop unit’s dynamic is very accepting and welcoming, open to ideas but still held under a strong leader who knows what he’s doing followed by his three little ducklings who look up with equal measurements of awe and cringing. Hip hop unit will always be family unit to me.

hey mama bree, im curious about something. what exactly is the argument for christians NOT stealing pagan traditions? cause idk i was raised christian and ever since i started practicing witchcraft (coming up on a year soon) and researching and learning about its history, it kind of seems like all major christian celebrations ARE derivative of pagan stuff. maybe not stolen, but idk. im only 17 and still pretty new to all this so i figured id ask an elder.

(I’m an elder now, good freakin’ lord…gonna have a giggle over that one later…as I sit here in my plaid granny shawl….)

The reason that some Christian holidays (namely Christmas and Easter) seem to utilize pagan symbols and share similar calendar timing can be put down to how the early Church developed. When European pagan populations were being converted, many churches continued to use the symbols and festival traditions that the country folks already knew and loved. The idea behind this was to make the conversion easier, and also to give the burgeoning religion more credibility and a better public relations image. (Nobody much cares for being converted at the point of a sword or having their holy symbols banned and burned.)

The Christian calendar is based, as we all know (or ought to know) on the Jewish calendar and progression of holy days. Thus Easter is marked close to Passover, to match Biblical timelines, and Christmas is placed in December because of a Jewish tradition that states that the Messiah’s death would occur in the same month he was conceived. (The Anunciation, or the celebration of Gabriel’s visit to Mary to announce that she would bear the Son of God, is a stationary Church holiday on March 25, to coincide with the usual timing of Passover and Easter.)

Certain countries retain more of their pre-Christian festivities than others, and it is from these places (such as Ireland and Sweden) that Gardner drew his inspiration for the Wheel of the Year, which Wiccans and Neo-Wiccans and some other pagans follow today. The Wheel is hardly a universal pagan holiday cycle (in fact, it ignores a great many pagan traditions and pays only lip service to others), but it does touch on the solstices and the major harvest festivals, which are found in one form or another in most agrarian civilizations with a holiday calendar. The names and timing may change, but the idea of celebrating the change of seasons and the cycle of crops is hardly new or exclusive to any one tradition.

It should also be noted that there is an unfortunate tendency among American pagans to ignore the existing holiday traditions of other countries. Scandinavian countries utilize many of what we might call “pagan” symbols in their Christmas celebrations, but it is from their mythology and holiday traditions that the symbols came in the first place. When the Norse pagans converted, they brought their traditions with them. (Hell, the WORD for Christmas in several Scandinavian languages is some derivation of “Yule.” That’s where we get it.)

Similar things happened in many Western European countries, and those places continue to celebrate Christian festivals with their traditional symbols to this day. Sometimes it has to do with folklore, sometimes it’s from the life story of a famous national saint, sometimes it’s a seasonal device from the region. Whatever the reason, the similarity comes from convergence, not theft.

And the pagans who start these ridiculous battles every year would do better to concern themselves with exclusionary or problematic practices in our own community, rather than railing against the “status quo” to feed a completely unnecessary martyrdom complex. (It wouldn’t hurt if they’re get their information from practical history texts instead of Slobber Ravingwolf and the like, but that’s another conversation for another day.)

Hopes this helps answer your questions! :)

Those boots were practically shouting Juvia’s name through the viewing glass as she walked down the street with her boyfriend. They were beautiful, pitch-black, knee-high boots with a two-inch stiletto heel. In one word, they were gorgeous.

“Gray-sama!” Juvia tugged on the sleeve of Gray’s jacket.

“What?” Gray stepped back and stood beside Juvia.

“Look at these boots! They’re beautiful!” Juvia awed at the shoes, practically pressing her face up against the glass of the window where the boots first caught her attention.

“Yeah, they’re nice.” Gray took a step forward to get a closer look. Suddenly, the price tag slapped him right across the face. “$500?!”

“No! They’re only $499.” Juvia defensively said.

“Oh, right. My mistake.” He sarcastically replied.

Juvia leaned forward to read the tag. “And they’re limited edition!”

“They just say that so people will buy them.” Gray grumbled.

“Juvia’s going to get them.” She giddly exclaimed without a second thought. Just as she dashed to the door of the shop, Gray got ahold of her wrist.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait a sec.” He reasoned. “Don’t you think $500 is a little expensive?”

“Juvia would sell her soul if it meant getting those boots.” She sounded completely serious.

“Alright, that’s a little much.” He grumbled. “Still, maybe you should pass on these.”

“But-!”

“I’m sure you can find boots that look just like that for half that price.”

“But-!”

“Just sleep on it, okay?” Gray’s voice was remaining clam, yet stern.

“O-kay.” Juvia muttered as she sullked.

~

Gray reached for his phone again and checked the time. It was now 10:45 P.M, and Juvia was still not back from work. She typically got home around 9:00, so ever since they moved in together, Gray liked to wait for her to get home before going to bed. Juvia would refer to it as “incredibly sweet” to which Gray would probably roll his eyes and go to bed.

Even when Juvia was going to be home late, she always texted him first. This time, he didn’t receive a text. He even texted her. Twice. At this point, he was starting to get nervous.

Just as he was about to send out a third text, he heard the door to their apartment opening. He attentively sat up on the couch, thinking about what to say to her. Something along the lines of “where the hell were you” or “you could’ve at least answered my texts” would suffice.

Sure enough, it was his girlfriend who was slowly opening the door (most likely to avoid creaks). Once she saw the lights were still on and Gray was sitting down on their couch, she opened it with normal force.

“Oh, Gray-sama is still up.” She said a bit suspiciously.

“So, where were you?” Gray decided to take a calmer approach.

“Just, uh, you know… walkin’ around.” Juvia forced a chuckle which got a curious eyebrow raise from Gray. He then noticed she was hiding a bag behind her back. Juvia’s attempt to hide the bag was a lost cause, since it was practically twice Juvia’s width.

“Walking around?”

“Eh… yes.” It seemed that even Juvia saw the weakness of her own lie.

“What do you have behind your back?” He pried.

“Nothing.”

“Juvia-” He was close to getting up and seeing what was in the bag himself.

“It’s nothing!” She took a step back.

“It’s obviously something.” He stood up and began to approach her.

“Okay, okay. But Gray-sama can’t be mad.” She sheepishly said.

“Juvia, I swear to god if there’s a dog in that bag I will-” To be honest, Gray was prepared for the worst, and Gray remembered their argument just a couple weeks ago about getting a dog.

“It’s not a dog.” Juvia stopped him before he could continue. “It’s… the boots.”

“Boots? As in the boots we just saw today? The boots that you wanted to impulsively buy that I told you to reconsider? The $500 boots?” He felt his irritation level rising.

“… They were $499.”

“Juvia!” He scolded.

“Juvia’s sorry! They were just too pretty!” She defended.

“Not $500 worth of pretty!”

“I beg to differ!” She tightly held onto the bag as if they were her children.

“Whatever.” Gray flooped back down onto the couch, feeling defeated. “It’s your money, anyway. You can waste it on as many ridiculously overpriced pairs of boots as you want.”

“It’s not like Juvia isn’t going to wear them! They go with practically everything. Trust me, they’ll go to good use.” She sat beside Gray.

“I guess you’re right.” He sighed and gave a tired smile to his girlfriend.

She had a smug look on her face as she cuddled up beside Gray. “Mhm.”

~

It had been two weeks or so since Juvia first bought the boots. She kept her word and was wearing them everywhere. She wore them to work, to go shopping, when she went out, and she even thought about wearing them to the gym.

These boots and Juvia were like a married couple. They were all over each other for their “honeymoon phase.” Juvia was hardly ever seen without the boots. She loved them more than words could describe. Then, things slowly got worse and worse.

After the first few days with the boots, she began noticing a couple blisters, but didn’t think much of it. Then, there was a a bit of pain every now and then when she walked in them for too long: no big deal. But then, the soreness kicked in. The poor girl wanted to shed a tear with each step she took in those things. It felt like walking on a field of legos, barefoot.

Of course, she couldn’t tell Gray this. Then she would get the whole “I told you so” talk which she was far too familiar with. She just had to suck it up and be a big girl. After all, beauty was pain.

But when Gray suddenly sprung on her one Saturday night that they would be walking to their friend, Natsu’s, house for a party, she almost puked.

“We’re, uh, we’re walking?” She barely choked out.

“Yeah? We always walk to Natsu’s house. It’s only six blocks.” Suddenly, six blocks sounded like six miles.

“B-but, it’s kinda’ chilly outside.”

“Chilly? It’s 60 degrees. Plus, you love the cold.”

“Ah, right.” She was so glad she had a boyfriend who knew these things about her.

“Just put on your boots and we’ll get going.” He began walking to the door.

“Th-the boots. Of course.” She felt her knees begin to buckle just at the thought of those torture devices.

They hadn’t even stepped out of the apartment complex yet and Juvia felt like her feet would shatter at any moment. This was going to be the longest six blocks of her entire life.

Gray noticed her awkward way of walking just after the first block. “You okay?”

“Me? Yeah, Juvia’s fine!” She forced herself to stand up as normally as possible while pushing a smile.

“Uh, okay… If you say so.” He continued walking.

Juvia lasted one more block of walking like a newborn deer before she finally burst.

“Juvia can’t!” She cried out, grasping for whatever was nearest to her for support. In this case, it was a post box.

“Can’t what?”

“Juvia can’t walk anymore! It’s too painful!” She felt tears stinging her eyes.

“What?” Gray still seemed to be lost.

“These boots are terrible! My feet ache, I have blisters, and they’re starting to give Juvia bunions, Gray-sama! Bunions!”

“I thought you loved the boots!”

“So did Juvia, until Juvia actually wore them.” She groaned. She knew the “I told you so” was sure to come.

Gray began to step closer to Juvia. She was ready for it. She was ready for the earful of nagging she was about to get. Still, nothing could’ve been worse than taking another step in those godforsaken boots.

But instead, she was approached by Gray’s back. He even bent down so he was closer to her height. “Get on.”

“Eh?’

“Get on.” He repeated.

“B-but aren’t you going to give Juvia the whole “i told you so” spiel?“ She was almost in shock.

“Nah. I think your bunions do the talking for me.” He chuckled.

There was a moment of silence before Gray looked back to Juvia. “Are you gonna’ get on, or do you wanna’ limp the rest of the way?”

With that, Juvia quickly pulled off the boots in record time and placed them beside her. She then placed one hand on each of Gray’s shoulders and hopped onto his back. He wrapped his arms under her thighs to get a tighter hold as Juvia put her arms around Gray’s neck.

"Gray-sama?”

“Hm?”

“Juvia’s sorry… she should’ve listened to you.” She admitted.

“Yeah, you should’ve.” He chuckled and spun his head around to peck her on the cheek which put her at ease, but she was still pouting.

“You good?” He asked.

He felt her nod and began the rest of the walk. Juvia was feeling embarrassed, to say the least. For one, Gray had to carry her around everywhere for the rest of the night, and second, he was right all along.

“I guess…” She said under her breath.

“Well that doesn’t sound so good to me.”

“It’s nothing.” Juvia said before blowing a piece of her hair out of her face.

“I could always drop you, ya’ know.” He turned his head slightly so she could see the smirk on his face.

Juvia took a breath. “It’s just… Juvia really liked those boots.” She whined as she remembered the happy times she had with her boots, even though those moments were very brief.

“I know.” He sighed.

“There’s $500 down the drain.” She gave a pout and turned her head to press her cheek against Gray’s shoulder.

Juvia eventually noticed all the funny looks she and Gray were getting from people they passed on the street. She couldn’t help but laugh.

“At least Juvia has an excuse for Gray-sama to give her a piggyback ride.” She giggled and tightened her grasp on Gray.

Juvia didn’t even have to see him to now he had a grumpy little pout on his face with pink cheeks.

"By the way,” She changed the subject. “Where are you holding the boots?”

“Huh?”

“The boots. You’re holding them, right?”

Gray stopped walking. “I thought you were holding them.” His voice went dry.

“W-wait, so, you don’t have the boots?”

“No…”

“Juvia must’ve left them back there when she got in Gray-sama’s back!” She mentally face-palmed.

“Well they’re gonna’ stay there, cause’ I’m not walking all the way back there just to get some boots you aren’t going to wear again.” And with that, he continued walking.

“But-!”

“Do you wanna walk back and get ‘em?” He interrupted before she could finish her (most likely) weak argument.

Juvia paused. “No…” She let out a sigh.

“Then they’re staying.”

“Okay…” They then continued their walk to Natsu’s

“Gray-sama…” She whined.

“What?”

“Can you give Juvia a foot massage later?” Her voice sounded so cute Gray couldn’t seem to utter the word “no”.

“…Yeah.” He breathed out, and Juvia gave him a peck on his neck.

“You’re the best boyfriend ever.” She hummed in his ear.

“I know.” Gray replied and continued to piggyback her the rest of the way with no complaints.
