I just called my 6th-grade teacher because he’s a historian and writer and I want him to come tell Southern Illinois ghost stories to the Kiwanis club in October and his voicemail was like:
Hello, you have reached this number no doubts by use of modern technology that I don’t understand. If you’re one of those Northern folks who talk real fast, I’m going to ask that you slow down for those of us born south of the Mason-Dixon line so I can understand you and call you back. Leave your message…now. –beep–
It was really hard to not laugh during the entire message I left.
Many times when I am contacted by someone having a Paranormal situation I am informed that their child or children are playing with invisible friends and that they talk to things that are not there. People want to understand why their children are doing this.
Are they psychic?
Yes and No, They are open.
To a child, anything is possible. Everything is real. Santa still comes down the chimney ever Christmas and the Easter Bunny still comes and brings them baskets every Easter. To a child, anything and everything is possible. They do see more then most for this fact. They have not been conditioned by society yet as to what is real and what is not. Over years they will be told, “Stop playing with your pretend friend Bobby” and this helps close them off to what they experience. We have done some investigations into this and the conclusions are outstanding.
On families who have always believed in the idea that there are spirits and other things out there that we can not see. These people seem to be more accepting of their children playing with invisible friends and they do not try to change the child’s ideas. It seems that more and more sensitives are being brought into this world by these people. They are being allowed to grow without being told what they saw as a child was not real so, in return being able to see these things as they did when they were children.
On the other side of this are the families who do not give their children a chance. They have a closed mind and they refuse to let the child be open. In return telling the child that they should not play with something or someone who is not really there.
“Billy stop playing with nothing”
“Tammy there is nothing there so stop it”
This is how the child stops believing in anything being possible. More sensitives come from families that have open minds then those who do not.
A “Demon” was originally a Greek term which meant a wise, guardian spirit. In present day spiritualism and parapsychology, the word connotes an entity which appears to have a malicious and resentful nature, and is possibly of a non-human origin: differentiated from a spirit which proceeded from a once-living person.
What characteristics do these entities evince?
1- They seem interested in, and often resentful (perhaps envious?) of living human beings.
2- Although they have been known to inflict minor injuries on people, such as scratches, welts and even what appear to be bite marks, primarily they assault the human mind through oppressive anxiety and fear.
3- They sometimes make their presence known through our senses, such as inexplicable foul odors and low guttural growling (examples of which have been recorded during TAPS investigations as well as investigations by other paranormal research groups).
Demons may exist as a “quasi life-form,” intelligent though not reasoning as do human beings, and existing outside the boundaries of our experience of linear time.
An exorcism or spiritual cleansing may provide a remedy, either temporary or hopefully permanent, against demonic infestation by making the environment hostile for the entity or entities.
Here’s a topic for speculation: Obviously, not much is known for certain regarding these entities called demons other than their presence is quite inconvenient. Consider, could a human spirit become demonic, or be assimilated by the demonic entities? Are they always of non-human origin?
Built in 1834, the Ohio Penitentiary was actually the second Ohio Penitentiary, the third state prison, and the fourth jail in early Columbus. In April 1955 it housed an all-time high of 5,235 prisoners. Most prisoners were removed from the prison by 1972 with the completion of the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility, and the facility was closed in 1984. The state sold the Ohio Penitentiary to the City of Columbus in 1995.
Much debate has surrounded the future of the Ohio Penitentiary. When thoughts turned to demolishing the penitentiary, the preservationist community mounted a campaign to save at least five historic buildings on Spring Street. The City of Columbus is cooperating with preservationists on a federal review of these buildings. However, crews are scheduled to begin tearing down the remaining 15 buildings in March, 1997. Demolition is expected to take three to four months. In addition to the above-ground demolition work, the city must hire a contractor to remove or minimize underground contamination remaining from decades of industrial activity and coal-burning at the site. The 23-acre site, bounded by Maple, West and Spring Streets and Neil Avenue, was the proposed location of a soccer stadium of up to 35,000 seats. However, on May 6, 1997, Franklin County voters rejected a three-year sales tax increase which would have helped finance this project. The future of the Pen site remains unknown.
Stone walls and iron bars they’re still here, but what of the humanity, if you can call it that, of the old Ohio State Reformatory at Mansfield. What of the 154,000 inmates who passed through it’s gates in it’s 94 years as a working prison. Not to mention their keepers, the Wardens, and the Guards, the gravediggers, and the rest, what of them remains? As it turns out, more than you might think. No matter what their crime, some sent to Mansfield have never left. They rest unclaimed in a cheerless graveyard just outside the fence. 215 numbered markers laid out row on row. Most were victims of disease, influenza, tuberculosis, but some died of less natural causes; From the violence, that is all to common inside any prison and was far from unknown in this one. And the worst of it occurred well away from the main cell block with their rows of cages stacked tier on tier, and inmates, one or two to a cell. There were too many eyes, too many witnesses here, no the worst of it was reserved for a far lonelier place, deep beneath the prison ground. A place called local control, or solitary, by some, known by everyone else as the hole. Near total isolation can crack all but the toughest of cons, but none was so alone that there wasn’t room for death. At least one inmate managed to hang himself, another set himself on fire, once two men left too long in a single tomb like cell, only one walked out, leaving his cellmate’s body behind, stuffed beneath a bunk. Could there be other similar surprises? Or words left over from the days before the prison closed? Even when they’re empty, some swear something walks these halls. It isn’t enough for contemporary visitors not to wonder off alone while sight seeing, what‘s become one of Mansfield’s more popular tourist attractions. But the bloodiest single incident in the old prison’s history occurred outside it’s walls. In July 1948, when the Reformatory’s farm boss, his wife and daughter were kidnapped and shot to death by two parolees bent on revenge. A six state manhunt for the so called mad-dog killers ended in a shootout that left Robert Daniels of Columbus in custody and his partner, James West dead. “I’ll get the Chair” Daniels told police as he signed the confession. And on January 3rd, 1949, he did. A year later in 1950 disaster struck again. This time, here in the living quarters of the Warden himself. The Warden’s wife, removing a jewelry box from a closet shelf dislodged a pistol from it’s hiding place. When it hit the floor, the gun went off inflicting a fatal wound. And within the decade, even more bad luck. The Warden, hard at work in his office, suffered a heart attack and died. All this was nearly 40 years ago and more, how then to explain the voices shaken tour guides swear they hear today? Man and woman talking, to faint to understand, to persistent to ignore and chilling to listeners who think they’re alone, only to find themselves apparently eavesdropping on the warden and his wife locked forever in an endless conversation from beyond the grave.
A Pukwudgie is a 2-or-3-foot-tall (0.61 or 0.91 m) troll-like being from the Wampanoag folklore. Pukwudgies’ features resemble those of a human, but with enlarged nose, fingers and ears. Their skin is described as being grey, smooth and at times has been known to glow.
In Native American lore, Pukwudgies have the following traits and abilities;
to appear and disappear at will
to transform into other animals
they are able to use magic
they have poison arrows
they can create fire at will
Pukwudgies control Tei-Pai-Wankas which are believed to be the souls of Native Americans they have killed.
Native Americans believed that Puckwudgies were best left alone. When you see a Puckwudgie you are not supposed to mess with them, or they will repay you by playing nasty tricks on you, or following you and causing trouble. They were once friendly to humans, then they turned against them. They are known to kidnap humans, push people off of cliffs, attack their victims with short knives and spears and to use sand to blind their victim.
“Legends of the Pukwudgie began in connection to Maushop, a creation giant believed by the Wampanoag to have created most of Cape Cod. He was beloved by the people, and the Pukwudgies were jealous of the affection the Natives had for him. They tried to help the Wampanoag, but their efforts always backfired until they eventually decided to torment them instead. They became mischievous and aggravated the Natives until they asked Granny Squanit, Maushop’s wife, for help. Maushop collected as many as he could. He shook them until they were confused and tossed them around New England. Some died, but others landed, regained their minds and made their way back to Massachusetts.
Satisfied he had done his job and pleased his wife, Maushop went away for a while. In his absence, the Pukwudgies had returned. They again changed their relationship with the Wampanoags. They were no longer a nuisance, but began kidnapping children, burning villages and forcing the Wampanoag deep into the woods and killing them. Squanit again stepped in, but Maushop, being very lazy, sent his five sons to fix the problem. The Pukwudgies lured them into deep grass and shot them dead with magic arrows. Enraged, Squanit and Maushop attacked as many as they could find and crushed them, but many escape and scatter throughout New England again. The Pukwudgies regrouped and tricked Maushop into the water and shot him with their arrows. Some legends say they killed him while other claim he became discouraged and depressed about the death of his sons, but Maushop disappears from the Wampanoags mythology.”
Pukwudgie encounters have been reported in the Freetown-Fall River State Forest in Massachusetts, which includes the 227-acre (0.92 km2) Watuppa Reservation, which belongs to the Wampanoag Nation. There have been several unexplained suicides at a ledge in the state forest and that has been linked by some to the Pukwudgie lore of pushing people off of cliffs.
Mounds State Park in Anderson, Indiana is a hotspot for Pukwudgie activity.
Round Rock’s Hairy Man Festival is based on a human boy who grew into a wild hermit and after his death he vengefully haunts Hairy Man Road. Some locals claim that he summoned a troll using old Nordic Runes to help him. It is that Troll that resides on Hairy Man Road, still there after the hermit’s death. He causes accidents and misfortune to those who dare travel Hairy Man Road by bicycle at night.
This type of haunting, or paranormal phenomena, is the most controversial type of haunting that has been documented to date by paranormal researchers. The idea that this type of activity may actually exist is still mostly theory and conjecture… although evidence is starting to be collected which may actually prove these “portals” exist. The problem is that this type of haunting is the least understood and least traditional of all types of spirit activity.
Many ghost researchers reject the theories behind “portals” because they do not fit into their accepted ideas of haunted places…. but we cannot afford to do this. We cannot afford to just reject off-hand something that we simply do not understand. Just think, if we had done this, many researchers would still be thinking that “poltergeist” activity was the work of evil spirits…. and not activity caused by the hidden depths of the human mind.
So, strange and untraditional or not, the idea of the “portal” must be examined because evidence is starting to appear which just may surprise the doubters among you.
The idea of a “portal” or a “doorway” to another dimension is not a new one. Many researchers believe that there are places all over the world that serve as “doorways” from our world to another. These doorways are thought to provide access for entities to enter our world. They may be the spirits of people who have lived before, or they could be something else altogether. Some researchers even believe that they could be otherworldly beings from another dimension.
If that sounds far-fetched, believe me, it isn’t as strange as it sounds. The entities sighted, reported and even photographed around what many believe to be “portals” could be the spirits of the dead…. or something much stranger.
If locations like this do exist and they are “doorways”, isn’t it an easy assumption to make that these spots could have been labeled as “haunted” over the years by people who have seen things near them that they couldn’t explain? I believe this has probably happened quite often and these places didn’t become “haunted” as other places do (through tragic events or death)….. these locations had already been that way for many, many years.
One of the most common locations for these “doorways” seem to be in cemeteries. Now, as a rule, most cemeteries are not haunted, but in the past few years, ghost hunters have collected dozens and dozens of anomalous photographs taken in cemeteries. There seems to be no explanation why many of these cemeteries would become haunted unless they provided access for spirits, or entities, to pass from one world to the next.
Of course, some of the cemeteries are haunted in the traditional manner…. it’s the ones that aren’t which causes the puzzle. It is possible that these sites were “haunted” long before a cemetery was located there. It is possible that the psychic draw of the area was what caused our ancestors to locate a cemetery there in the first place. They may have felt there was something “sacred” or “spiritual” about the place and without realizing why, they placed a burial ground there and made it a protected place.
The Native Americans chose their burial grounds in this manner, although they did it consciously. They found a place to bury and honor the dead which they felt was more closely connected to the next world. Many of these locations are now considered to be “haunted” or at least inhabited by spirits.
So why not our own cemeteries? Could our own ancestors have not chosen the sites for our own burial grounds in the same manner, albeit in an unconscious way? These “doorways” could be passages to the next world and the entities captured on film here could be the spirits of the dead… passing back and forth between two worlds….. or they could be something far stranger.
And, as I will show you in a few moments, graveyards are not the only places to find these doorways. I believe they exist in other places too. In fact, these doorways, and the strange entities that come through them, may just be the explanation for many of the sightings that have plagued the annals of paranormal research for years. For some time, investigators have attempted to dispel the some of the myths that “ghosts are evil” and that “they hurt people”….. but what if we are wrong, at least partially?
I don’t believe that ghosts can hurt you… at least not the discarnate personalities of the dead. There are certainly cases of people being injured in hauntings, but most of these cases boil down to poltergeist phenomena, caused by a human agent and not a ghost at all. It is the other type of case that worries me…. the cases of strange beings that cannot ever be described as human, terrifying visions, and yes, instances of people actually being injured by the entities involved in the case.
What if these creatures are not ghosts at all? But strange entities that we cannot understand… who have passed into our world via these “portals”? We have to consider this… as it may provide many answers to cases where traditional methods of ghost investigation have not worked. This theory might even explain the “negative” spirits that are commonly reported!
The following are 2 locations which are believed to be “portal” locations.
GRAVEYARD X: There really is no background information about this secluded Midwestern cemetery, which makes the strange findings and photographs obtained here all the more interesting and complex.
Nearly every photograph taken here was obtained in a small area of the cemetery, a short distance from a small hill. What this really means… I have no idea. But it seems to point towards a more active part of the cemetery and, I believe, a doorway. There have also been a number of documented temperature drops in this area. One reading, using a Raytech Raynger ST2, was photographed and shows two researchers pointing the thermal scanner at a luminous mist that was not seen at the time of the photograph. This photo was also taken in the same portion of the cemetery.
In 1997, during an investigation at this cemetery, several researchers had made contact with a spirit who was present. According to the planchette, it claimed to be that of a small child who could not spell her name, did not know her age.. but who claimed to not be alone at the location. Strangely, the first burial in the cemetery had been of a young girl who would have been described in just that manner.
Could the spirit making contact have actually been that of a young girl? Or could there have been other spirits who passed along information they thought we wanted to hear? Or could the entities have been something far stranger, and so alien to us, that they pretended to be something familiar to us and something that we could recognize.
I believe this option should be considered.
THE BELL WITCH CAVE: The story of the Bell Witch is probably one of the most famous hauntings in American history. Many writers and researchers believe that the haunting was caused by one of two sources. First, that the spirit on the farm was an outward projection of a woman named Kate Batts, with whom John Bell had been involved with through a bad business deal. Other say that the haunting was actually a poltergeist manifestation caused by Betsy Bell, John’s daughter, who targeted herself and her father for attacks by the “witch”.
But I would like to suggest a third theory. I believe that the “witch” was a creature who already inhabited the site of the Bell farm, long before it started to haunt the Bell family. I do not believe that it is a coincidence that an Indian burial ground is located on the property (and directly above the Bell Witch Cave… but more about that in a moment). This burial mound is an ancient one and built centuries before by the mysterious mound builders of the region. If these Native Americans chose this location for a reason (and I believe they did) then it could have been because the location was a “sacred” site..in other words, a portal to the next world.
Imagine this for a moment…. let’s say that an entity came through this portal and inhabited the area for many years before the white settlers came. When the haunting first started with the Bells, the spirit appeared in the form of a black dog and as a giant bird. These are both symbols from American Indian mythology and it is possible that the spirit had plagued the Indians in this location first, appearing as their mythological symbols. Perhaps the spirit had no concept that time had passed and that new people had come to the area.
The forms of the dog and the bird quickly passed and the haunting began with sounds of knocks, raps and guttural human sounds before it became violent. Consider the idea that the spirit may not have known the Bells at all, but just targeted them because they lived nearby. Perhaps it spent the initial days of the haunting learning human mannerisms, speech and language and learned of the Kate Batt’s problem by simply observing the family. Once the spirit “learned” to speak, the problems seemed to intensify.
Again, this is all speculation, but it does fit rather neatly into the profile that we have created for a “portal” haunting and would solve some of the remaining puzzles from the Bell Witch case.
But what about the cave itself? It was never really a part of the original story of the Bell Witch, but it has its own share of mysteries. There have been numerous strange events that have taken place here, from strange sights, sounds, encounters, and even photographs that seem to be affected by some sort of energy in the area. As mentioned previously, the cave is located in the side of a Red River bluff…. directly beneath the burial ground. If this location really is a “portal”… it just might explain the bizarre events that have been reported here for decades.
But is there any evidence that a “portal” is located on the property? As a matter of fact, there is!
While filming at the Bell Witch Cave for the ADVENTURES BEYOND documentary, “America’s Most Haunted” in June of 1997, they inadvertently recorded a rather strange event in one of the passages of the cave. The “Adventures Beyond” producer, Bob Schott, was using advanced optical technology that had been developed for the military during the Gulf War and while taping, he captured a unique event on film.
Directly before the camera, in a narrow cave passage, a “doorway effect” opened from right to left across the corridor. The doorway was unseen by all of them at the time… as were the two macabre-looking faces that appeared in the doorway. It all happened so fast that they could not have reacted if they had seen anything. In fact, the faces appeared in single frames… only a mere second apart. They would not be discovered until post-production, some weeks later.
Unable to believe his eyes, Schott submitted the film for meticulous testing by two manufacturers of advanced technology for the military, B.E. Meyers and Litton Industries. Both companies were skeptical of the project until they received the tapes…. and both of them ruled the images as unexplainable!
So what does all of this mean? I will have to leave that up to you to decide….
Are “portals” real and do they really connect with another world, or another dimension? I believe the possibility is very strong! For now, the theory involves a lot of speculation but I do believe it has merit and should not be dismissed without much more study and research.
If we refuse to consider the idea, then where does that get us? Even after all of these years, the paranormal sciences are still in the beginning stages. All that we can do right now is to speculate and theorize and try to gather as much evidence as possible that something is out there…..
And in some cases, that something may be stranger than we think!
Demons are one of the known inhuman entities out there. Fortunately, they are a rare occurrence.
They are usually very easy to identify as long as they are not hiding. When it is a demonic haunting you typically notice a revolting stench similar to rotted flesh or sulfuric acid. They often let loose a growl that sounds like it is coming from everywhere at once. They like to make contact by pushing, shoving, hitting, and even scratching. The whole air in the affected area will feel thick like fog and the temperature will drastically change, typically becoming warmer.
These creatures are very strong, unlike human spirits, and they don’t mind showing it. There have been cases where people have been thrown through the air and even attacked. Apparently, their main goal is to break down a person’s free will in order to make way for possession. This can take days, months or years, but time is of no concern to them.
They have a hatred for mankind that dates back to the days of God and Lucifer. They have lived for millennia and will be here long after we are gone. So, you must understand that though you may be able to get these creatures to leave a dwelling with religious provocation you will never destroy them. They could go to the next place down the road if they choose, most likely they won’t because distance is not a problem for these creatures. They could go from Maine to California on a thought.
They can take on any form they wish, but mostly commonly it is a half man, half animal form. They will have the head of an animal, the torso of a man, and the hairy legs of an animal. When they are approached by an investigating paranormal team they may feel threatened and appear in a human form to keep the home from being blessed and stop the use of religious provocation.
During an investigation you need assess the situation more by what happened before you arrived than what is actually going on during the time you are there. Demons are capable of changing form right in front of you from a human form to an inhuman form. They neither male nor female, but then can change that to meet their needs. People mostly see demons as black masses standing in doorways or near rooms. Sometimes they are called shadow devils.
If you feel like you have a demon in your home I would recommend getting help from a well known paranormal group as quickly as possible. Time is of the essence when dealing with these creatures.
The prime sensory instrument of any ghost investigation is an EMF meter. There are a lot of different kinds of EMF Detectors on the market. In this section, we will discuss the different kinds of EMF detectors, and what their different specifications and features do. The EMF Detector, as used in paranormal investigations, can help on proving (or disproving) that the place you are investigating is haunted.
Most EMF Detectors do range over $100.00, but there are some less expensive models on the market for the novice Paranormal Investigator. As you will see in this section, all EMF Detectors have their own frequency settings. The best thing to do when you buy or use an EMF Detector is to learn the settings, so that when you go on an investigation, you will know whether you are witnessing paranormal activity or if it is something else altogether.
On most standard EMF Detectors, each LED light at the X10 setting represents 1 milligauss. Many in the paranormal business feel that a reading between 2-8 mG could indicate the presence of something supernatural. Be sure and practice with a meter in your own home so you become familiar with what will cause an indication.
EMF detectors were designed to detect electromagnetic emissions from microwave ovens and high tension electrical wires. EMF detectors alert investigators to the presence of ghosts by measuring electromagnetic distortion in the two to seven milligauss range. The models that come most highly recommended by paranormal investigators are the Trifield EMF Detector and the Trifield Natural EM.
What you are looking for on an EMF Detector in a Paranormal Setting is:
A reading as above (could be 2, might be 20 mG) that cannot be explained by a local power source.
A reading which changes or fluctuates for no accountable reason. Standing in a room, the reading is 2 mG, then it spikes to 9, and back down to 2.
Normal background readings which DROP for no explainable cause can be the indication that something is trying to manifest.
To always try correlating the reading with some other phenomena. A cold spot, orbs on film, or even a strange feeling can lend weight to a strange EMF indication.
To experiment with different settings and meters. Use different brands and models of EMF meters to see what works for you.
How to use an EMF Detector in a Paranormal Investigation
Start by scanning the area you are investigating with a swaying motion that starts from side to side and finish with an up and down motion. Do this in a gentle even pattern. Do not jerk the meter, or move the meter to fast. This will give off a false reading.
EMF meters are very sensitive to power sources and will register such things as televisions, stereos, microwaves and power lines. The EMF meter will even register your camera if it is to close to it. The most important thing is to be aware of your surroundings before thinking that you have just detected paranormal activity. The Trifield Natural EMF Meter is an exception to this rule, as it ignores most power sources.
Paranormal Activity will usually register in the range of 2.0 to 7.0 milligauss. After eliminating all outside power sources and you are still in the 2.0 to 7.0 range, you are probably detecting some sort of paranormal activity.
When you buy a new EMF Detector, make sure you become familiar with it before taking it out on a paranormal investigation. Use the EMF Detector in front of your television, stereo, microwave, etc. and see how it reacts to these electrical sources.
When working with an EMF Detector it is best to pair up with someone that is operating a camera. When something is detected, the camera person can be notified and pictures immediately taken.
When a hot spot is detected, make sure to document the spot. Do this so that you can recheck these areas later in the investigation. Areas that register activity are usually frequented by spirits.
Be sure to bring extra batteries for your EMF Detector, because they drain fast, and for a long investigation, you want to keep the EMF Detector ready for anything.
